Lurker isn't social media PC anymore: the correct term is "valuable thinker audience person who reflects before posting" (cf. http://friendfeed.com/e/7e2fe7...) - Mark Trapp
"Popular Science has a feature on the sports stadiums of tomorrow, one of them being Cisco Field, future home of the Oakland A's. Apparently Cisco needed something to do with a bunch of spare cable it had lying around, and is thinking about adding interactive wireless touchscreens to every seat (!). These in-seat displays would be capable of calling up driving routes out of the park, player statistics, and even the shortest bathroom lines. And forget trips to the concession stand — just order a hot dog right from the onscreen menu.
Besides the obvious concern of putting a sophisticated piece of technology in the hands of drunken and rowdy superfans, this thing probably isn't as useful as the designers think it is. I mean, traffic is always murder after a game. Roving concession guys have let people order snacks from their seats for decades. And even if you could find a shorter bathroom line, would you really want to walk all the way to the other side of the stadium to find it?" - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
Tip #3: Give the complete order at once. for example, "I'd like a #1 with a sprite That's all." $10 says they'll come back with," do you want anything else or will this complete your order?" - LPH
An additional comment (I'm mobile at the moment): could it be that the third party apps that wither and die are the apps that themselves are not blessed by a sound business plan? For example, I could conceive of a service that searched for tweets that mentioned both Milli Vanilli and Slim Whitman. If I had to pay for API access, I could argue that my creativity had been stifled. But if I had chosen a project which interested consumers, and for which data existed, perhaps the money to fund API access could be found. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
"From flickr. I guess they could also be considered homemade Hydrox cookies. I've never been a fan of Oreos, but these wouldn't last long in my house." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet
Just what's missing with my coffee here, they look fantastic - Mo Kargas
A warm Oreo dipped in Milk sounds great. If you work at an Oreo plant post on this thread. Do they let you eat them straight off the production line? - Franklin Pettit
A friend of mine interviewed at a honey bun plant. The employees could go down to the plant floor and get a warm honey bun anytime they wanted. - Franklin Pettit
Another I'm sharing with the Foods room. yummy for my tummy. ETA - nevermind... :) - Yolanda
If I worked at a place like that, it just wouldn't be good. Warm Oreos...yum. - JMS
I know exactaly how much. I downloaded the MeeTimer plugin for FF. - Sonciary Honnoll
i moved almost completely off of twitter. i still set off a tweet here and there when the subject is not FF worthy; like "I'm drinking my protein shake by the pool". All in all its alot more interesting on FF. - Carlos Ayala
I tried Twitter and didn't like it. Since starting FF, I hate to admit it, I actually like FF. It is sort of like a group instant messaging utility. - Herschel
Since I used RescueTime for a week, I have reduced all my soc net time down drastically. - Sally Church
I don't waste my time on twitter anymore. I spend all my time on FF; that's where the conversations are. - John Budnik
Well, most of the people I follow on twitter are here, so I turned off device updates on twitter. And as for the rest, twitter has not been sending me IM's for a few weeks now. So outside a short twit now and then, or my script posting what I'm listing... I'm not wasting much time on twitter. - Grant Bierman
None at all. Just FF. Anyone worth talking tech with on the internet is here on FF. We could use a bigger crowd, but for now this is where it's at. - Tad Donaghe
Wasting time? What? Twitter and FF don't qualify as "research"... - Anthony K Valley
not enough, although most of my time is wasted on Friendfeed these days - Bjorn Tipling
better question should be how much time are you wasting on the internet - Dan Rockwell via twhirl
I don't consider any of it wasted. I get a lot of great links and information from Twitter/FF posts, and I've seen/participated in a lot of interesting discussions as a result of those links. That's never a waste. - Evangeline
Well, I used to waste a lot of time. But since I got Twhirl, no time gets wasted. It is a marvelous tool. - Rodrigo Leme via twhirl
I think an interesting related question is, "what are you accomplishing on Twitter? " - Brian Wilson
I use little twitter, more FF and fftogo lately. I'm not a techie so I hope to not bore folks as I try to broaden my geekish horizons :) - kbourke
I use Twitter for communcating with some clients, and also now use Twhirl. - Ian May via twhirl
"gmail expects the same respect as outlook" - tell that to the Corporate IT .. and see what the response is !! - Peter Dawson
I wrote about RescueTime when they first launched, but I never dared to try it myself for what it might find :-) To answer the headline question: hardly any at all now. - Duncan Riley
I mostly use Twitter in bits of time between more meaningful tasks. Standing in line, waiting, switching between tasks, etc. - Jack Collins
I have a blackberry and I live in Canada. There is no easy way now to read/follow twitter since the IM feature is gone; I used to read twitter via google talk. I find that twitterberry and m.twitter don't allow me to read more than a page or the past hour and using SMS is painful. Every 250 messages I need to delete my mobile number online and re-add it or I would have to wait a week for new messages. I read it when I'm on the go or need a break from my writing. - Phillip Jeffrey
I waste more time on friendfeed a lot more than twitter because of how much more content is available - Justin
I use time very wisely on Twitter - no more than 30 mins/day actively. Scans messages while it runs in background on Twhirl. - Jim Turner via twhirl
i rarely use twitter, but i wouldn't say that it's because of ff. necessarily. it's just become unreliable as well as "spammy" - Cee Bee
Next to none since friendfeed. Loving me some friendfeed! - joshua fouts
None. I'm wasting my time on friendfeed instead :) - Ryo
I would love to use Twitter and Friendfeed more - if only they were more mainstream here in Australia. - Jim Yiapanis
Isn't Twitter like breathing? I don't stop breathing. - Carolyn via twhirl
I think I'll be wasting a lot of time on FF, only because it offers you more real estate than twitter. That and the fact that I never know when, and if, twitter will be online! - Dukeswharf via twhirl
Thanks Duncan. By the way, I've been following you since you launched Inquisitr. At first I was just curious to see the evolution of a new blog, but now I come back for your quality content and honest opinions. Good work. - Lance Schone
By the way, you've launched a number of clever features/utilities in such a short time. Was this all part of your master plan or has it been more of an ad hoc genesis? - Lance Schone
Thx Lance. No master plan, just things that have come along. I've got a lot more time now to experiment which is why you see things like AIR apps and Greasemonkey scripts. + enjoy learning how to do them - Duncan Riley
Cheers for the mention Duncan, I have imported this into my Google Reader and have 236 feeds to fulfill my need for news now!! - Joe Dawson
Thanks for including me, Duncan, and for the always-great content and apps. - Anthony Citrano
What Michael said. There is nothing like sweet tea. - Harvey Simmons
They seem to like it COLD here, ewwwww ;) - Sally Church
Nope, love my coffee though. for me tea is a particular time or feeling. - Rob Diana
That would be tea colored sugar water. Just the thought makes my teeth fall out. :-) - JMS
Hmm... well, since I have the urge now, I better make some Earl Grey before it gets too hot and humid - Michael W. May via twhirl
I enjoy a nice cuppa as much as the next guy, but when it's 103 outside, bring on the ice. In my own defense, I am a regulation southerner, barefoot and everything. - Harvey Simmons
I have a funny story about the differences in American's view of tea. When I was about 6, we lived in the Netherlands for 2 years and our neighbor was from Scotland. My mother cooked dinner for him and his wife and made sweet iced tea. He took one drink, made his horrible face, and said "I'm sorry, but what is this bloody mess?" - Trish Robinson
That is the face I make when I am silly enough to try iced coffee yet again - Michael W. May via twhirl
I'm from the South, so sweet tea is definitely a favorite, but I also love PG Tips w/ a bit of soy milk... The South definitely has more than just sweet tea, if you're in polite company ;) - Jason Carreira
Iced or hot, I like them both. It's cold enough in our building to enjoy hot even in summer. - JMS
Most of the Brits I know are of the same opinion, that Americans haven't quite grasped the concept of tea. It seems like an insignificant point, but is actually an important indicator of the cultural difference. I vaguely remember reading about some European general who came to America during the Revolutionary War, and he was stunned that you couldn't tell American soldiers to just do something, you had to explain WHY they should do it. - Karim
This translates into perhaps less decorum, more mockery of established order, and less understanding of the "proper" ways to do things, such as make tea. (Americans have been known to put milk in the cup AFTERWARDS!) The flip side is, of course, rock music and moon landings. :-) - Karim
@Karim "the "proper" ways to do things" depends in which culture u r in. In japan nobody uses milk in their tea. The tea ceromny is most elobrate of tea thingys :)- - Peter Dawson
I'm content with my iced moca coffee. Thanks though. - David Cook
Karim, milk does go in after ;) and then only in certain types of tea. Oh and I'm not British - Aussie convict here mate. Take directions from some Pommie bastard? Not bloody likely cobber! Yet can still make a decent cuppa :-) - Patricia Hanrahan
LOL ++1 Foster's Lager for Patricia !! - Peter Dawson
Fosters?!?! Strewth mate, that stuff is cats' wee. Be chundering all night on that :-) - Patricia Hanrahan
seems that accent is certainly comeing fr an irish type of convict !! - Peter Dawson
Southern Sweet Tea on a hot fourth of july nothing like it. - Franklin Pettit
that RULES...even if it IS from mtv canada ;) - Mona N
Need to learn how to take jokes better and figure out my own bat signal since looking at the sky if you can't see it that well don't work - Cecil Sandus
and of course this is suppose to be where all the poor people can get their internet from ... or at least that is what I have been told - still haven't seen it happen in our town - Steven Hodson
It is a lot cheaper to check out a book at a library than buy it on Amazon.com. - Michael Tefft
Yes. I just went to the library last weekend. Free books, dvds, internet, Wifi magazines. I can't read anything long form on a screen. - Jason Kaneshiro
100% YES. It's about local community and access to information. Books may wither and die, but libraries will always live on. I spent 3 days working from the downtown San Francisco library on the 5th floor in the study rooms, which were just perfect. Free wifi and quiet place to work. Can't beat it. Plus I happen to technically be a librarian with my MLIS degree from UW. Cataloging FTW! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
My town's library has great internet and lots of terminals, which I hardly ever see anyone using. - Morton Fox
Yes. I try to take my kids to the library at least once a week. Public libraries can be an important public space and community center. Plus, like others have said, I don't want to buy every book I read, and I do read a lot of books (Luddite, I know). But mainly I think public libraries are an important bastion against the relentless privatization of everything (no more public phones because everyone has a cell phone; no more libraries because everyone has a Kindle, or whatever). - nathan
Just as a contrary example, the terminals whenever I go to the libraries near us are always packed. Lots of people using the free Wifi with their laptops, too. - Jason Kaneshiro
@Morton, yep I was pretty satirical in my reply :)- - Peter Dawson
YES! Libraries now let you renew and reserve books online. Libraries ROCK - Mona N
I love books, the feel of the paper, the original source, the typography. It's the struggle I have with the Kindle, I want the portability, but like music- vinyl was far superior than compressed mp3's, we have taken too many steps backwards sacrificing quality for convenience. May we never lose the love of Books. - Nice Fish Films
Yes. I think they are an extremely important part of our society and community and will be around for years to come (as long as the government doesn't start asking this question) - Justin Korn
Definitely. I use the public library all the time, for books, magazines, DVDs and they have free meeting rooms as well. - Trish Robinson
Just visit a real good library, reserve some books from 16th century, thumb through the parchment. No comparison to a pdf file. But for new books, at least for books that you want to search for information, you're right. My notebook is my library. - benedikt
the internet is great and all but i use the library for music and movie but mostly for audiobooks since until they make them REASONABLE I'm paying that much. I however have stopped going as much due to podcasts but good books and podcasts are two different things. - Cecil Sandus
If libraries were private we'd know right away by looking at the profit/loss statements. Obviously profits would indicate sufficient demand exists over the costs involved. Losses would mean the opposite. Since governments don't calculate, we can expect libraries to be around a lot longer then they should be. - Chris Rossini
I went to the library twice this week to use their computers. - Russellreno
absolutely we need libraries as there is a wealth of information which is only available in the printed-dead tree version. i worked for a number of years moving library's collections- some of these collections are extremely important to maintain. artifacts like leonardo's codex, the original manuscript of tom sawyer deserve to be preserved in a library collection. - Nathan Eckenrode
@Chris I don't agree. Libraries are also about conserving printed cultural heritage. And at the moment there is a strong debate about the concept of a library 2.0 and what this could mean. In my opinion librarians belong to the few professions that really have a grasp of web 2.0. - benedikt
Commenting mostly so my librarian friends will jump all over this. - Jason Toney
Why does everyone ON the internet think everyone ELSE is on the internet and has a computer too? On my street there's only about 6 or 7 homes out of 40 that have computers with internet connections. Wardriving in this neighborhood puts about 1 wifi hotspot on each block if you're lucky. - Adam Turetzky
Um. Yes. We do. I'd be out of a job if we didn't :P Libraries offer so much more than books. Will gather thoughts (rants) together and comment in detail later :-) - Patricia Hanrahan
Throwing some thoughts around on this topic for a future blog post. I love hearing both sides of the coin, thank you all for commenting. - Mike Fruchter
yes, some people can't afford to shop at Borders :-) - Duncan Riley
Absolutely!!! Even with so many resources available via Internet, I still use public libraries nearly every week and periodically use university libraries. I've been fortunate to live in LA & Bay Area last decade plus which have wonderful libraries & resources (great online subscription databases too, can access some from home w/library card). These libraries are heavily used too. Plus, there's the social aspect - kids' story hours, meeting spaces for groups, classes, language tables/classes, etc. - Casey
Libraries will always exist, but nothing will stop them from evolving. - possible248
I was a bit surprised by news someone posted earlier this week mentioning library closures in areas I would have thought to be more supportive. I would think such news (and results) would have negative impact on housing values. I certainly wouldn't want to buy a home in an area that didn't value libraries and their benefits. Would just be a clear indicator to me that I probably wouldn't have much in common on a number of levels with the residents there. - Casey
Oh, and contrary to impression one might have re: such heavy library use, I still spend thousands annually at my local independent bookstores and Amazon (was probably in the first cohort of customers offered free Amazon Prime trial). Guess I'm just an info and ideas junkie. - Casey
Absolutely, positively 100% yes, particularly for children, but also for those on the other side of the digital divide. - AJ Kohn
@Chris Rossini Personally I don't agree with the idea that the value of any institution can be measured in purely financial terms, even theoretically. To me, one of the important things about a library, besides being a repository of information and cultural heritage, is that it's one of the few places left where the public can gather without being expected to spend money on something. - nathan
we could just have big banks of computers for free, and also have some sort of independent library site with servers - Neal Jansons via twhirl
free WIFI spots with comfort are a great public idea... and a library is a shelter. also I'm not sure the publishing industry is ready to give up on paper. - Noah David Simon
@Noah David: I'm not sure if the industry will even be asked. - benedikt
We need libraries but very different to the ones we have today. They should reflect the changing way society consumes content. - Jim Yiapanis
“As much as I poke fun at the southern baptists in the Bible Belt, those church ladies never fail to show up in a crisis, and usually with really good food.”
I'm one of those Southern Baptists, too. Though not the fanatical, funeral protesting type. The SBC actually has an entire team dedicated to crisis and disaster relief. - Bradley McSpinn
Yes, they do a lot of disaster relief, and make excellent casseroles, too. - Trish Robinson
Hahahah...that's a great PR campaign, just waiting to happen. - Bradley McSpinn
When I was growing up, my mother was supposed to bring homemade ice cream a "dinner on the grounds" church event. She forgot, and went to buy Blue Bell homemade vanilla and mushed it up in the ice cream freezer. She couldn't face the church ladies with a container of store bought. She was busted, though. You can't fool old southern women. - Trish Robinson
Thanks for this! Been trying to figure out how to organize all my social media; it's way too easy to get in over your head with this stuff. - Joyce Garcia
Abdullah if you need an invite to Toluu let me know. Joyce thank you. - Mike Fruchter
Thanks, Mike. Put in my 2 cents over there, as much to sort out my thoughts on the matter as anything else. My top 5 might already be changing as I speak! :) - Joyce Garcia
I think what's also important is the relevance and weight of what you are contributing as well, not just the fact that you are contributing. Good list of sites. Found a new one (disqu). - Jeff Woelker
