Steve Gillmor says that Twitter says the problem is on their end and that they are working on it. Been like this for several days now. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
I think it's a conspiracy! ;-) Did anyone ever get an honest answer out of Twitter as to why this is happening?
- Jeff P. Henderson
Days? More like weeks or months. If they were thinking, Twitter would reverse that latency so input to Twitter was fast and outbound was slower
- Christian Anderson
It is because FriendFeed is posting directly to Twitter via the twitter API. Twitter is NOT posting to FriendFeed, so it is up to FF's polling mechanism. But I suppose FF and Twitter could have worked something out where FF should get the updates in real-time.
- Daniel Sims
Bret wrote (on Thu) “The XMPP feed we get from Twitter is about 30 minutes behind. Sorry about the lag for Twitter messages this past week. We are working with Twitter to fix this technical issue.”" http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Ken Sheppardson
I wanted to mention this the other day, it's annoying and so not useful. the core of Twitter is in real-time... well, it's not when it comes to Friendfeed.
- Orli Yakuel
I tend to force a refresh a lot - not just for twitter, either. Flickr photos haven't been showing up at all w/o the refresh.
- Sarah Perez
True, very annoying. Facebook is just as bad...their stream shows things I did days later.
- Neal Jansons
To me it looks like there's a disconnect of the Twitter "Firehose" that used to work between FF and Twitter. FF seems to be using Twitter's feeds now (maybe as a fall back) but twtitter feeds frankly suck. Slow, frequently broken, etc...
- mikepk
I also force Refresh often, both the tweets and blog posts on FF.
- Bora Zivkovic
This never bothered me. I almost never have a message that can't be sent out over a 30 minute period. When would that 30 minutes be so important? I'm curious.
- MarkCarras
Mark: when you are trying to have a conversation about something 30 minutes isn't acceptable. News, for instance. Or just plain comparing notes. What Twitter is doing is ensuring I'll send more notes from friendfeed because I know then both of my groups of friends will see whatever I'm doing at same time.
- Robert Scoble
there's actually a reason why Twitter's feeds are slow, but it's not described here
- Steve Gillmor
Robert: Twitter has never been about conversation though. It just doesn't seem like it was made for that to me. On the rare occasion I do converse through Twitter, I do it directly to avoid the lag. You are right about Friend Feed being better for conversation, but I think it was made with that more in mind.
- MarkCarras
Steve: Some reason other than the XMPP 30-min lag Bret mentioned last Thu? (per above)
- Ken Sheppardson
what's useless? My information? Do your homework.
- Steve Gillmor
Have to assume it has something to do with the "business model" they have but are not talking about... how long until search results/API are slowed by 30 minutes without $$$
- Brian Roy
that would be great if they made reliable access available for $$.
- Steve Gillmor
I'm of two minds. 1) It stifles the dev community 2) I'd pay (reasonably) for preferred access - if they are taking away what is there today unless we $$ that would just seem like extortion.
- Brian Roy
neither of those explain why the feed is asynchronous. 1. so far has not stifled community. 2. It's not here today.
- Steve Gillmor
By here today I meant inducing an artificial 30 minute delay in the (in particular) search API. I get tweets today within 15 - 30 seconds 90% of the time. I would, however, pay for a premium service with SLA for timely delivery.
- Brian Roy
I doubt a delay is being "induced." We "pay" for every message we get.
- Steve Gillmor
Ah... ok. As cryptic as that may seem I think I know exactly what you mean.
- Brian Roy
I am not being cryptic. I am being factual.
- Steve Gillmor
Yeah I know... that is what I meant. It seemed cryptic but wasn't. Thanks Steve.
- Brian Roy
I'm thinking of quitting Twitter. I don't use it, find it overwhelming. And even when I do use it I don't actually enjoy it like do FF: Twitter consistently feels like a chore.
Same here, I've neglected Twitter and I don't miss it, I don't miss the spam, the money trees and the fake celebrities etc
- M F
Brian, I already ignore it! No, I'm thinking of canning it altogether. Actually, canning both my accounts (yes, I do in fact hate Twitter but have two accounts).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Ignoring seems the path of least resistance.
- Brian Sullivan
There is a HUGE amount of amateurism on Twitter. People tweeting stupid self promotional stuff, intellectual bullshit-ery, social media pundit-ery and a lot of Blah. And yet there is some value among all of that noise. I do agree that it is overwhelming but I think that akin to FF, whether it feels like a chore or not depends on whether one is following the right people.
- Parth Awasthi
I don't know about that, Parth. I follow about 150 people on Twitter and almost 1100 here on FF. I have no issues keeping up here and finding value in my stream. When I use Twitter, though, just those 150 people make it impossible for me to follow a conversation. I basically just hate the way it works.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Tina: Just have your FF dump to your twitter, It puts a link for everyone to come back here to find you, and your stories and stuff still reach your twitter centric audience.
- Matthew DeVries
I'm sorry, but I like Twitter. Don't spend as much time as I should on it, but it's API is now pervasive enough that I can now update places that I don't normally go to with my Twitter statuses. Conversation on it is quite difficult, however.
- Helen Sventitsky
But Matthew, then they'd see me whining about how much I hate Twitter!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
You can abandon twitter without abandoning your followers. You could do like I did. I use SocialToo to message everyone that follows me to tell them I don't really use Twitter much and they are better off following me here. It's also very plainly stated on my Twitter profile. And for those that don't care to try Friendfeed and insist on following me on Twitter any way, I feed them some of my stuff from here. Maybe with any luck, something they see & like will bring them here someday. ;-)
- April Russo (app103)
I still use Twitter to stay in touch with the people who haven't figured out FF's superiority yet. But I do it grudgingly - I don't like the flow (or lack thereof) of it.
- Martha
So, I say, if you can get them to come over here instead, then I would say buh bye to Twitter, without a second glance!
- Martha
I wouldn't delete my account if I were you. Just point your users here temporarily. Things may change with Twitter (in fact, I have a feeling things are going to drastically change this year)
- Bwana ☠
I'm in the same boat, I don't really dig twitter either. I keep trying though. I think part of it is that I'm too verbose so I really hate the character limit... I find I spend more time editing my tweets to compress them then communicating. Let me blather, blah blah blah.... :)
- mikepk
I know there's value in conciseness... I just don't want to spend that many brain cycles on it. (the blather continues...)
- mikepk
Once SocialDM is integrated into FriendFeed, who needs Twitter? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Friendfeed so massively blows away Twitter that it ain't even funny. I say this after having just made one last heroic effort to "get" Twitter by using it heavily every which way.
- Sean McBride
It's great advertising for FF if you set FF to post to Twitted and you import your Twitter friends into FF.
- Ernie Oporto
from Nambu
Hmmm... See, several of the people on Twitter already follow me here, though not all. And I don't actually know any of the people I follow there, it's just people I found interesting when I first signed up last summer. I'm already a bad tweeter (twitterer?), by just watching the message count on TwitterFox rise on a daily basis without actually checking it.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
As Twitter, I like it some way. Not always, because just those stupid spamper people are just annoing with ther follows. It's just much easy to blog into Twitter, because there's so many tools for that. And watching what people do in Twitter is more easy at Twitter then here in FF.
- Kristian Salonen
Actually Mona, I do too and that is why Twitter still has some value for me still.
- Martha
It's different, and not as rewarding as FF, but using Tweetdeck helps, and not everybody is in FF. My biz contacts really like Twitter, so I use it to talk with them.
- anna sauce
I use tweetgrid.com mostly I like to use twitter as a connection point mainly
- RetiredTeacherD
i recently twittered about washing my jeans after 8 months. it made me feel more complete
- Cee Bee
That's pretty much it, Abby. I think it'd be different if I were entrenched on Twitter, or knew the people who followed me personally/professionally. But I don't know them, at all. They're interesting enough sometimes, but Twitter makes it impossible for me to schlog through and find the things that are worthwhile. Either I catch it when it flies by, or it's gone.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I so agree. Twitter is a pain. Friendfeed must be really hard to get, otherwise I couldn't explain why the whole community hasn't flown over by now.
- Meryn Stol
I don't want to broadcast and I don't want to be broadcasted to. So Twitter doesn't really have a purpose for me.
- Andrew
I used it for a few months. Then I stopped. Then came FF. End of story.
- Jim Hearts FF
Odd you should mention... I have found it useful to stay connected with people I know and want to send a quick hit to. I just paired down from following 400 or so to 80 or so. 1) I want to be part of the conversation not watching it roll by, and 2) I don't want to blast people that might not care with stuff I care about.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
I can see that, Ken. But I don't really know anyone on my Twitter, other than FF people (and I see that stuff here). Other than that, Twitter has no bearing on or connection to my personal or professional life...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
You could bail on your peeps on Twitter and start over with only friends and family.
- Steven Perez
Steven, that's the problem: there ARE no friends/family on Twitter.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
LOL! Chris, it's odd enough having my sister and sister-in-law on FB. Stopped porting my FF over at that point...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Guess I'm in a minority here but I love Twitter. It's a v different group of people for me though, a mix of real life friends, acquaintances, scientists and Pharma people so perfect for me. FF is much more tech focus so not surprising tech peeps prefer it.
- Sally Church
Sally -- how do you manage to conduct discussions with these people on Twitter? Most Twitterers seem to be talking to themselves.
- Sean McBride
Sally, come on - you aren't allowed to find Twitter useful in this thread.
- Shawn Farner
In order to use Twitter effectively you cannot allow yourself to feel pressure to keep up. It's not even possible. Instead, spend a few minutes there during your daily browse and quick scan for anything that interests you. 3rd party apps like Tweetdeck, can substantially improve functionality and fun.
- Mattb4rd
Hey now, Shawn =( If someone else finds Twitter useful, more power to them. It's not like I posted "Hey! Let's ALL quit Twitter!"...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
different services, different uses. </2 cents>
- vijay
I'm not really thriled with either yet. I love FF for teh threaded conversations but I love Twitter because I know when someone is actually responding to me.
- ChiliMac
from twhirl
Why does everyone think twitter has "real time search"? They disabled tracking, without tracking you can't do strict real time--you just get archived content (anything older than "now"), which is just standard search.
- Andy Bakun
+10 Tina. I am finding more and more that FriendFeed is far superior and enjoyable than Twitter. I made the mistake of following too many people on Twitter (all of my followers), etc. So now I have 11,600 followers and follow about the same amount. I only converse with about 20 or so people however. And my main Twitter input stream has mostly garbage that I have to filter by using TweetDeck searches. I now prefer FriendFeed.
- Bill Romanos
Blocking is unreliable. Hiding is the safest route.
- Joe Pierce

And I was just going on & on about how running "apps" on your "computer" and generating "files" was going the way of the dodo bird, and all about web apps, the cloud... etc. My friend said "what if they did something with your data?" and I reply "what could they possibly do?" Ug.
- Dean Terry
FOG - not a bad thing to have. Had a similar issue when "Teh GOOG" thought my wife was a spammer because she has a lot of people to communicate with. Send email, deafening silence. Please, pretty please, let me back in, deafening silence. Wait a week, maybe, hopefully someone will take a look at it. It helps my perspective on these issues to think that primarily Google isn't a company, it's an algorithm. Love what they create, but they're a little short on customer service.
- Todd McKinney
i wish the story was more clear on what activities this 'Nick' was doing with his Google tools before the problems occured. we all click right through the long-winded EULA legal-eagle language when signing up for lots of these services...maybe he was violating the Terms of Use.
- .LAG liked that
This totally freaks me out because I've seen that same message a couple times. All of a sudden, I go to my Gmail tab that I left open and it has logged me out. I put in my password and it then asks me to do a CAPTCHA. Then I get the message. I refresh the page though and it's all good again - it lets me login. However, when it happened, I was near panicking for a minute. What's going on, I wonder? I think maybe I should switch but switching email is *HARD*. Time to turn on automatic forwarding though?
- Sarah Perez
@Sarah Perez: Just setup Thunderbird and have it POP to Gmail. Instant downloaded Gmail backup.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
The thing that could and should save him is the additional storage. He has a transaction record with his (assumed) credit info on it. He should be able to get somewhere with that. The fact Google did not recommend a course of action involving that upon conclusion of their investigation sucks belly button lint.
- Michael W. May
Google owns me too. I have almost all of my email accounts collected into one GMail account. My GMail goes back to 2004 but other mail in there is older than that. If this happened to me I'd be devastated. Google really needs to respond to this. I'm not feeling really safe right now.
- Kenya
As I said in my comments, if you are paying for Google Apps -- pick up the phone and call them with your support number from the support screen you should have printed when you signed up for service as a PAYING customer like you would for any bill with a utility company. Did I miss something or gloss past this somewhere in the writeup Chris or was there no phone call placed to Google Apps support? http://www.chrisbrogan.com/when-go...
- Jay Cuthrell
I have my Gmail setup to forward everything to an alternate backup account at dreamhost, where in theory I have 300GB of space available. It's come in handy every once in a while when Google's servers act up.
- Carlos Granier-Phelps
from twhirl
So, nothing was mission critical, but still. Think how many services you can't use if you lose your g-account. Gmail, docs, calendar, picasa, etc. It's not trivial.
- Chris Brogan
I commented on the blog post, but I'll say it here too: "I’m glad that Nick got his account back. The system to recover your account asks you to try to remember information to prove that it’s you instead of a hacker, but I believe it still lets you recover your account much faster than the previous system that Google used."
- Matt Cutts
P.S. One difference between Google and many other companies is with Google you can back up your email for free and easily. If you want to back up all your data in your Google Account, the Google Operating System blog did a nice summary post about how to do it: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007... . At least with Google you can pretty much pull all of your data out and back it up.
- Matt Cutts
@Matt - thanks for commenting and for your ideas. It wasn't the Gmail account that was the biggest part. It was the fact that without THAT account, he was locked out of All Things G (don't tell Walt and Kara). That's way more tricky than missing an email or something. Right?
- Chris Brogan
I think the key to safety here is diversity of services everyone relies on plus back up - a desktop client for Gmail, regular export of OPML, etc.
- Svetlana Gladkova
Another lock-out here: mine just got canned sometime between 9a and 11a EDT. Luckily it's a new account w/ no data, but still...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I hope everyone scrolls down to read the comments instead of running way scared. :)
- Marcel
I blogged about some interesting options for moving our data out of corporate control and back into the cloud. This is something I've advocated for years, great to see the discussion here. http://theprogressbar.com/archive...
- Dave Evans
@Chris, there's several ways to look at this. If you're worried about losing data if an account is disabled, it's easy to back-up almost any data associated with your Google Account (see my previous comment about how to do that). If you're worried about not being able to use All Things G with the disabled account, you could always create a new account to access Google services. On the third hand, if you're worried about the actual disable-ing and how to correct that, there are good ways.
- Matt Cutts
@Chris, continuing my comment on reversing a disabled account. :) For example, we provide a self-service tool to help get your account back: http://mail.google.com/support... and account recovery: http://www.google.com/support... . I think Google provides better tools for online account recovery than most other sites. Some people do abuse Google accounts, so we have to be able to disable those accounts. We try hard, but no service will be 100% perfect.
- Matt Cutts
I spent the first few years of my life just down the street from there on 6th and Howard. I used to remember walking by this building with all of its hustle and bustle...
- Franklin Naval
Not so much hustle and bustle these days, more doom and gloom.
- Dave Winer
No, I can read faster than listening to someone rattle on about nothing, while trying to be cute.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I disagree too. The next era of personal promotion is going to be through FriendFeeding, which includes both video and text blogs.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: +1 to you and adding a voice blogging "speech2text" system. (that works properly)
- Erhan Erdogan
Nope. I prefer to read, and I prefer to write. A LOT of people are exhibitionists enough to write publicly, but NOT exhibitionists enough to talk on voice, not to mention to go video. Another thing you have to consider is that while writing has not got an accent, talk has. (Funny fact: majority of the world is not a native English speaker) And while a lot of people want to talk to a big audience, and that means English, over voice it is way more difficult than through writing
- Roland Hesz
is your presumption that people blog for self promotion?
- Christian Anderson
Christian: well, there is a certain amount of self promotion that's necessary for a blog. Otherwise, why not just email your thoughts to yourself, or have a private blog? At some level people who write for public consumption are hoping to be read, if not just by Google's spiders. To me that's defacto self promotion.
- Robert Scoble
differentiate yourself?...maybe, but i don't think it takes over blogging. Sound/listening is more cumbersome than just reading. Maybe a differentiator is being a GOOD writer/blogger? ;-)
- George Lee
from twhirl
I hope that the next thing doesn't become about personal promotion. That's what's turning everyone off from blogs. It should be about ideas, like everyone here keeps saying.
- Eric Florenzano
Only for the beautiful people. The anonymous text based medium of the internet net has allowed a nation of wallflowers and introverts to blossom. Video blogging will be little more than a fashion show. It's best use on the internet will be for technology demonstration.
- Adam Turetzky
will we see a Milli Vanilli or Cyrano de Bergerac of videoblogging?
- George Lee
from twhirl
Robert: agree there is a certain amount of self-promotion that goes hand in hand with blogging, but my sense is the vast majority of bloggers out there are blogging to share thoughts with friends or as a way to differentiate themselves as thoughtful/knowledgeable in their industry almost as an add-on to a resume or creative outlet -- not as a medium for self promotion for self promotion's sake.
- Christian Anderson
Still prefer writing to video, but video it has its place. I'm getting better at it.
- Andrew Feinberg
while I believe that video is the next big thing in the personal blogging space, blogging won't die: text is still the easiest way to consume content
- Duncan Riley
i am loving videblogging. It has already helped iterasi win a start up contest that resulted in two free tickets and exhibit space at Supernova.
- Alex Williams
Nah its not for me, never click the play button. I have too much living still to do.
- Mel Buckpitt
@Robert I know bloggers who write to be heard, but would NEVER put their voice and face behind their blogs as it is too personal and painful. They just need a place to tell the world and got some nice support.
- Roland Hesz
Duncan: I agree, but there's nothing like getting an iPhone app demo on video.
- Robert Scoble
video becomes easier, so everyone can do it. The same reason blogging took off, because it was easy to publish your thoughts online. So video, will be the next big addition to self promotion. Video is taking off, does this mean podcasting is not going to make it?
- Erno Hannink
Blogging will be dominated by multimedia not only video
- Igor Poltavskiy
If you're blogging with the intent to be differentiated, you're probably doing it for the wrong reason.
- Louis Gray
I am blogging because it is fun! Whatever comes besides that I consider it plus alpha, money wise and anything else wise!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I think I was wrong after reading this conversation (wow, it exploded!) - I think the future is a mix. Blogs that allow for MULTIPLE streams of taking in information - the ones who seamlessly integrate, video, audio, text, and yes, Friendfeed will rise above.
- Ben Parr
Anything that requires me to be in front of a camera at any point is made of Epic Fail and Lose. I'm bad enough behind a mic. With visual torments for my audience? Not even I'm that cruel.

Wow, clearly this was posted to start a conversation. Great bait. Absolute insanity though, podcasting or videoblogging was never intended to replace anything. Nor will it.

I have a feeling the next September 11 won't be in New York.

Do I sense jealousy? I think it's incredible. About time someone built something impressive. The US should follow suit with a suitably impressive WTC memorial. As for a messed up society? Pff, when your own house is in order then go after someone elses.

Robert, I was thinking exactly the same thing ;)
- Graham Garland

Wow, that is awe-inspiring. I would be scared out of my mind to be on that thing when it is finished, let alone being the crane operator. Gives me the heeby geebies just thinking about it!

Dubai must be an interesting place visually. All sorts of weird buildings there.

The same architect was going to build a 2400-foot casino resort here in Vegas before the FAA intervened and got it canceled. Something about it being in the way of planes.

no way in hell am I going to the top of that thing. imagine being an iron worker on the very top? well I guess it's like China, labor is replaceable
- clarke thomas
There are many over-the-top examples of Dubai architecture, but the one that really knocks my socks off is the project to build an entirely new city with extreme "green" ambition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... I'm frequently amazed by the sheer quantity of projects like this happening in UAE.
- Jason Wehmhoener
What's Barad-dûr doing in the middle of Dubai??

Very impressive piece of engineering and architecture!
- Jeff P. Henderson
Why? I don't understand why. It's like they are trying to prove something. But how many workers died building this vanity project?
- Liz
Liz it's not the Middle Ages. I am sure the building is not resting on the bones of the poor exploited workers.
- John Samuelson
this place looks like after a war! They might have the money, but haven't they heard about green? Let's see what happens when they will run out of oil. Anyway, that's a great building, but it doesn't fit the landscape.

"We are sorting ourselves out by choosing to live with people that we agree with," Bill Clinton quote from today. Is this true of FF community?

It's not possible for everybody to like anyone. If everyone else in the world likes a person, then my husband will hate him/her.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
If you always try to get everyone to like you and never say anything that expresses your true feelings for fear that someone might be offended does that mean you hate yourself?
- Guilty Party
Part of me really agrees with the quote, but part of me also thinks it's a load of crap. I think that if there's someone everyone likes, that person is probably hiding something or not allowing themself to be fully transparent. For me, I prefer total transparency - I want to know if I'm going to like you or hate you. Any middleground just wastes time and energy.
- Sam Dodge
I agree to a point. You have to have an opinion and stick up for that, but you can't just be generally abrasive.
- Jeremy Vaught
I was thinking about this some more Loic. I think this statement is bullshit propaganda tripe spouted by people who think being a dick is "interesting". No, it's just you being a dick. Being liked is a good thing. Let's not try to claim that good people are boring as you suggest.
- Jim Kukral
Asuming you're good, I think it's easy to be disliked and come across as arogant. It's far harder to be good and liked.
- Ben Metcalfe

There's no such thing as "everybody." There's nothing wrong with mediocre. Being hated does not mean you are more [interestng, intelligent, creative] etc. Being liked and being mediocre are factors independent of each other.
- Roxanne Darling

You can be liked by many people, but it is impossible to satisfy everyone. Sometimes you will bump into people that you don't like. I would say "If everybody likes you, you are not honest"

yes that is 100% true unless you are an antagonizer. Notice Amanda Chapel is both intelligent and has people listening to her.
- Noah David Simon
To be a real jerk in social networking brings people to you. but it makes ur life a nightmare. I would prefer mediocrity
- Noah David Simon
in an optimized system (social or economic) mediocrity is healthy =) (retweeting myself here into FF, since FF doesn't pickup the twitter conversation)
- Thomas Knoll
I got my twitter account back @NoahDavidSimon and I notice by not being there I still have around 1000 followers.
- Noah David Simon
by not tweeting I got a better share of listeners... but not really. I just didn't piss them off yet

I think that's perception. I've met and worked with (and read about etc.) just as many women as I have men. There is much more a balance now then there was a few years ago.
- Candace
Because the tech industry self-selects for maleness. It's generally not woman friendly.
- Craig Thomler
Lucretia: what's even more fun is that conference is within walking distance of my house. I love it when cool conferences happen literally in my back yard.
- Robert Scoble
My own personal opinion and experience - they aren't taken as seriously as their male peers
- Renee Hendricks
@sbullo: My personal opinion? This distinction male/female doesn't have actually its place when it comes to tech. Because we tech folks are the very cute n' sweet assexual babies! :)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
I've been asking that question ALL my life!
- fbrunel
I'm available too - community building, networking & branding - just need an invite :)
- Connie Bensen
Is there still a huge gap between the salaries for men and women? As I alluded to before, conferences can be out of reach for financial reasons alone. I asked my employers to send me to TechEd for 3 years before it actually happened; I've been working there for 9 years. (Thank you, boss! I'm not complaining!)
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Conferences? Look at the recommended here... there's a limited list of women anyone thinks of inviting to speak, etc. and they can't do every conference, yet there are tons of men. Why are there more men in tech in general? Speaking from my experience, it's a reality that if you have kids and drop out for even a few months, the world passes you by and you drop back down to the Z-list. Six months home with #1 and I had no career to go back to and had to start over again.
- Cyndy
This one boggles my mind, because I've had great experiences with women in tech. Usually smarter and more mature than the guys anyway.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Sorry but I don't belive and won't believe that someone's sex defines his/her abilities. I've seen many smart and dumb women/men in my dev's life. Sure, there's differences in the way they solve problems (you just can't deny it :) ) BUT it's before all about the one who is willing to do a nice and clean job.
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Most of the time, women are more straight forward and spend less time aspiring for higher positions, limelight or I should not say, attention, but women (i could be wrong) like to stay low key. Priorities in women are very different compared to men. Which starts another topic..why women sometimes feel inadequate competing with men. In most cases, women tend to give in easily. But lately...
- Brenda McLaren
@cstechcast: Sorry, This is NOT true. It's just what you think :)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
@directeur oh that would be lovely if it were true @sean I love being the exception to the rule
- Renee Hendricks
Because I'm too busy taking care of my kid, doing my "day job" and curing world hunger to try to grow my reach to that level. ;) But I soon hope to find a way to add several hours to the day in order to do so. Then... watch out!
- Robyn Miller
Brenda - very true about women not being as competitive as men, one place I worked for a short period of time was asking why it was that women providers were having a harder time getting jobs as the men. I shared with them something I found early on - women will downplay their abilities every time whereas men will (not lie, mind you) tend to overplay their abilities. Men tend to be better "self" salesmen.
- Renee Hendricks
@directeur, I hear you, sex does not define ability, I agree. But I have heard from a couple women who have had to deal with sexism and the issue of not being taken seriously. I've also met women who have moved up without having too many issues. Just my small sample, but some men put priority on building castles and have little regard for others, while women can be more willing to work together and get along. I do think some men don't take women seriously and that is part of the problem.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
@cstechcast: I hear you! Sincerly. But in the other hand I think that it's up to the individual person (man or woman) to define and follow till achievement his objectives and dreams. Keeping on saying "we women are underestimated...etc." is not the solution. You'll never hear a man saying "we men are underestimated" Not because it doesn't happen, but I (a man) take these things personaly and never generalize to my sex
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
@directeur: 10-4, understood. I just think some people still treat women unfairly for no reason, I've seen it. It's unfortunate because my experience with women in tech has been almost all positive. A small sample I know, and I know our choices determine our path. Agree with that.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
@Susanne: Yes...very true...I am generally not comfortable upselling myself.
- Brenda McLaren
The same people get asked to speak over and over again. It's lack of imagination on the part of organizers, or lack of knowledge of who is out there. Women don't self-promote (myself excluded).
- Francine Hardaway
from twhirl
The French! lol Loic don't you have many beautiful French girlfriends? lmao
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
What Cyndy, Robyn, Suzanne and Francine said. Also, in this age high tech is seen as a "man's" world. Women are just not taken that seriously or ostracized/objectified (ne Playboy) if reaching any kind of prominence. You all remember what happened to Kathy Sierra, right? The women Brenda talk about are the exception.
- Helen Sventitsky
this industry and their conferences are mostly boring
- Erno Hannink
I got an idea. I will start TechBitches.com and make a video on Seesmic. Then you can get Scoble and "Fast Company" to destroy my reputation and get every Soccer Mom to block me.... now wait didn't that already happen? um... hmmmmmm
- Noah David Simon
or was that someone else? I think it was called "Tech" something.
- Noah David Simon
"Tech"something. yes?... it is all coming to me now. Seems 2of offended a lot of blue state people who didn't know the context
- Noah David Simon
Not all sections of tech industry are male dominated. I joined a library tech team a couple of years ago as the 7th member and the 2nd male in the team.
- Nick Cowie
Maybe Robert can cut it off and become the first Alister woman in tech industry! LMAO
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
But jokes a side, how about a Martha Steward of tech? What happened to the HP lady, Carly Fiorina?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@kbourke I actually have only had one cup of coffee in my life. Am I missing out?
- Ben Parr
Well, I am a totally addicted to the stuff. Did you like it when you tried it? I hated my first cup because it had sugar in it. Try it like I take mine, with milk only.
- kbourke
@RAPatton Useful Tech, Social Media, Sci-fi, writing, blogging, American Football. Honestly, I want a diverse range of ideas from a diverse group of people.
- Ben Parr
Any particular football teams? Or just football in general?
- Patrick Veverka
hmm... perhaps this could be statistically derived based on the data that's available now.
- Franklin Naval
@franknaval: What? NoiseRiver never asks people to install any script, anything at all actually. Can you please show us a screenshot? :)

Once again, Matthew fell asleep at the office after putting in a hard day's work. Allen, can't you pay this kid a little OT and stop snaking his snacks?
- Louis Gray

wow... it looks like he's already worshiping at the Alter of Apple ;) - but he looks like a cutie! Jeez, you even Web 2.0'd his tush!
- David Silvernail
Nothing better than the short period when you can put them on the couch and walk away, knowing that they have no ability to move or otherwise hurt themselves. Soon you'll be in the weeds because every time a new gadget comes out, you'll have to buy 3 of them (1 for you and 2 for them) "But Dad, Patrick Scoble had one, why don't we each get one?" [Note to readers, I'm relatively certain I read somewhere that PS buys his cool toys himself, but it's a funny anyway]
- David Thomas
I think one of the things you fail to realize is that the community only gives people tons of productive feedback if said people already have some sort of popularity or leg into the productive side of a community. It’s hard to break the status quo and become part of any “in” group. You are luckily influential and popular on FriendFeed, so you get lots of feedback.
- Brian Wilson
I've definitely been enjoying your stuff lately. The inside looks at seadragon have been especially cool. btw, I notice that you aren't following me on FF. It would be great to get in on that group. :)
- Ben Reierson
I've only been on FF for two weeks and have 26 people following me including several 'high profile' people. If you participate, you can quickly become part of the community. If you have something interesting to say, people will follow you. If you just lurk, then you experience will be much less interesting.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Yeah, I certainly agree with that. Participation is a must, and hope I didn't imply otherwise. There is a lot of noise on here as well. I think sometimes you happen to catch people's eye, but just as often people will slip through the cracks. I think as FF evolves it will hopefully focus on making it easier to find the most interesting contributors. For instance there is no way to mod your comment up, which would be nice.
- Ben Reierson
are you using the WordPress module to get FF into your site? Do the comments on your site come here? Because I see Brian's comment here and blog but not allen's .. just curious. Oh, tried to get Gail and Martin from TabletKiosk onto FF. So, even Face-to-Face conversations are influenced by FF
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I agree with Robert. If it wasn't for the community, I wouldn't be coming back to read stuff. I'm still trying to get the hang of it though. There's a lot of noise and I'm now unsubscribing a bunch of people that I added when I started.
- Franklin Naval
LPH: no, Brian just copied his comment to both places. I haven't yet gone with one of the new fangled comment systems.
- Robert Scoble
When I first joined FF, I was asked to subscribe to a few "popular".. Robert Scoble is like the starter's package. I haven't added many others so far yet. Robert and his friends' entries take up most of the entries I see everyday. That, in a way, is to say there's quite a lot of noise but it's a good introduction to the FF itself as well. Heh.
- Chris Chua
Chris: I try to keep the noise down to a dull roar. Let me know if I'm getting carried away.
- Robert Scoble
I loved the live chat room but interested as to what the interactive elements will be.Update - It'll be 2am on Saturday morning here so I won't be able to watch :(
- Toby Graham
Ben Reierson: "Participation is a must" That all depends of course on how you want to use FriendFeed.
- Rutger Blom
“FF needs a "No, really. Hide this." button. Just because people keep commenting on an entry doesn't mean I have any interest in it and I would really like it to go away and stay gone.” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
xero -- None of those are a "I don't want to see this entry any more." I don't want to globally hide all of Foo's (for example) stuff. And I certainly don't want to hide all foaf stuff. Just particular entries that I want to hide and have stay hidden.
- James (@willia4)
Isn't that the way it works? -- hide means don't show in my feed again.
- Brian Sullivan
Good point, but then we should be able to filter things by language. It will be scary if chinese invade FF -- just kidding, we all love chinese :)
- directeur
filtering by language would be a useful add!
- Alessandro
Translation a la Google would be cooler! Us English-only folks don't want to be exclusive, we're just not skilled enough to include foreign languages. Machine translation isn't perfect but it could go a long way toward broadening the conversation so all your Chinese (or others) ideas can contribute to our conversation as well as vice versa.
- Kenneth LeFebvre
I think it's not in the best interest of FriendFeed to add localizations in this stage because development of core system is still on the way. I would be more impressed if base system would develop faster instead of crossing development to multible ways (because adding translations can cause problems because community starts to split up).
- Daniel Schildt
It's not just English. There are some really heavy users of FriendFeed in Iran. Lots of persian FriendFeed rooms http://friendfeed.com/e... and people sharing FriendFeed stat pages.
- Mitchell Tsai
English is my 4th language actually :)
- directeur
Is there much French (or other non-English European) activity? I haven't seen much non-English non-Persian activity in my usage yet.
- Mitchell Tsai
I also miss my friends here. FF's interface is simple, so it won't take a lot of time to translate it... But such simplicity may be lost after adding localization and filtering by language options, I afraid.
- Anton
Is it just me, or are all baby clothes in either FriendFeed or Twitter colors? I was noticing in my baby boy's clothes today that I had half of web 2.0 in his wardrobe.
- Jesse Stay
Wonderful photos. Congrats and enjoy!
- Larry Huffman
yeah it is all nice and happy now - give it 12 months and the inner demon comes out... Nice time though, when they are small and cute :) Enjoy it.
- Dave Gray
The best part at this age is when they fall asleep on your chest.

Looks like Sarah is trying to push Matt away... saying "Hey dude! We are so out of the womb! Shove over!!"

I tried this last night, but I never got past the "Loading Room" bit, all the icons on the left never appeared and neither did the say something box either.
- Stuart Grimshaw
from twhirl
It's lagging and crashing quite heavily in my tries. Sometimes logging out of Windows helps and from my experience, never exiting a room normally but always kiling the "client.exe" process through the Windows task manager avoids freezing.
- Philipp Lenssen
I've tried it twice now. It's never crashed for me but it has been pretty slow. In every room I've been to, I've ended up getting abuse without really doing anything!
- Tony Ruscoe
I'll have another try later. Maybe it's none too happy on 2k3?
- Stuart Grimshaw
from twhirl
Tony do you use XP? I'm getting lots of crashes on Vista.
- Philipp Lenssen
Yep. Windows XP and Fx3. It's definitely not perfect though. Some of the rendering flickers quite a lot but it's pretty usable in general. Stuart, pls don't tell IT I've installed it at work... ;-)
- Tony Ruscoe
Ok Tony, as long as you promise not to tell them I have either :-)

Corvida: Louis' article really enraged me. I just am tired of dealing with the nasties online. Normal people are always nice. Something about the Internet makes nasty people feel entitled to get in your face. I'm actively working against that. If I see someone be a jerk against someone else I block them. I just have zero tolerance anymore for jerks. They can go someplace else.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, doesn't that count as censorship? It's great to see you and Louis bringing these issues to light btw since you reach so many people...
- Mona Nomura
@scobleizer - cannot agree more. wonder why there are so many oversized egos today
- ming yeow
Mona: no. censorship is only done by governments, not by individual citizens. And, anyway, censorship would only happen if I took away their right to publish what they want. That's what their blogs and/or their FriendFeed accounts are for. Freedom of speech does not guarantee that anyone will listen. It also doesn't mean you have the right to pollute my communities.
- Robert Scoble
Mona, Robert isn't saying he's going to stop people saying anything. He's just stopping listening.
- Michael C. Harris
... and, beaten. Do you people just constantly hit refresh ?
- Michael C. Harris
Robert: Do you moderate all of your comments? ---which I think is great due to the sheer volume of responses and feedback you probably get. Not that many people take the time to do so :)
- Mona Nomura
Mona: yes, I do now. I used to let anyone comment. In fact, on my blog, I still let most any random jerk still post there. But I'm definitely decreasing my tolerance for that kind of behavior.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Now that I think about it, I see how your patience can run thin. Especially in the www where it's avant-garde and people use individuals like you and or Louis to gain exposure..... It's fascinating
- Mona Nomura
Mona: yeah, one tool of an attention-hungry person is to start a fight. Think about high school. Did anyone pay attention to the geek? No. But did everyone pay attention to a fight? Yes. Humans are attracted to jerks and bullies (and salacious stories). It's the downside of our culture.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: You think? If anything I think it's opposite on the internet.. People recognize attention whores and disregard them...
- Mona Nomura
Mona: I think that's true long term, but short term they definitely love a good fight.
- Robert Scoble
@Louis @Robert Thanks for those words. You shouldn't get yourself worked up over this Robert. You're strategy for ignoring them is the best you can do, but those people just aren't worthy putting the type of energy necessary into getting angry with them. It's terribly draining and it's more negative for you than it is for them.
- Corvida
...maybe the FF crowd is the exception.
- Mona Nomura
Mona: in general the FF crowd is absolutely wonderful. I think that block is going to let this community go on for a long time without getting polluted. Corvida: oh, I have built up a thick skin about this stuff, but there's no reason why I need to have it forced in my face anymore. They can take their vitriol to some other neighborhood.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: That's why I am SO addicted to FF... quality > quantity and most of the individuals ignore the negative attention whoring individuals. It's quite refreshing and I have to admit, I prefer the FF interactions over real life... wow. maybe i need new friends =\
- Mona Nomura
Corvida, awesome response at SheGeeks. I think this demonstrates that social media is not inherently good, and the banality of evil can be amplified as well.
- Elliott Ng
The same people dishing abuse will also be the most vocal when it comes to them being blocked.
- Ross Maguire
The world is full of crazies, both on- and offline. Thankfully, they seem to be an annoyingly vocal minority, but their reach is sometimes disproportionate. Most of all, they love seeing themselves talked about.
- John Samuelson
With all of the amazing things to learn and share with each other it saddens me that cowards (and that's exactly what they are - insecure, socially awkward cowards) have to hide behind their computers and spew ignorance-laced venom. I love FF and the social communities for the building of my personal and community knowledge. People that look to destroy that special creation (knowledge, community, etc.) are dead to me. Rock on Corvida.
- Morgan
Scoble can I have a private conversation with you somewhere? I won't take up much of your time.
- Corvida
Corvida: call me anytime. +1-425-205-1921
- Robert Scoble
Mona: my cell phone number has been on my blog for years. I get very few calls at all, which is just great, and almost all of the ones I get are very high value. You can call anytime too!
- Robert Scoble
Mona: I get a couple a month. Think about it. If you call me I have your phone number and can crank call you back. (I don't answer calls that don't use caller ID).
- Robert Scoble
but... that's so personal! Maybe it's because I've always separated my real life with my internet life I'm more apprehensive. Actually I'm thinking of inviting myself to the dinner you're planning to have with your family and Louis'.. I'm a good babysitter HA
- Mona Nomura
Coming in late on this one. I've noticed it more and more that people are becoming abusive on the web (in chat rooms, in comments on blogs...including TechCrunch), it's ridiculous and I'm glad to see people are trying to take a stand against it. Stand strong Corvida...the FF community has your back!
- Justin Korn
I agree 100% with Robert Scoble. "I just am tired of dealing with the nasties online. Normal people are always nice. Something about the Internet makes nasty people feel entitled to get in your face. I'm actively working against that. If I see someone be a jerk against someone else I block them. I just have zero tolerance anymore for jerks. They can go someplace else."
- Joao
Great article...but even better discussion. The FF community has become just that.
- Chris Nixon
The greatest part about Louis and Robert is they involve themselves in discussions.. As I become more immersed in the Twitter/FF community, I've noticed most "A-listers" are one sided... I truly adore FF... actually I think I'm in love with it. Like.. I want to marry FF and have FailWhale babies together <3
- Mona Nomura
@Chris Nixon, agreed. I'm glad to be here among thoughtful people. What went down in Corvida and Wayne's interview is just disgusting. Corvida, your continuing to do your work with dignity will always draw people to you and away from what I hope is an ever-decreasing hateful minority.
- Ayşe E.
Mona N, I thought you wanted to marry Google. Now you want to marry FF too.
- RAPatton
