Well, FF is probably the best of the last round of linear conversation and aggregation tools, largely thanks to the lack of overhead and fluff (the users contribute plenty). Whether you use it in a bare-bones, flat way -- or have mastered an elaborate orchestration of API hooks and fiddlizations -- there is plenty of value to be had in the way FF handles its business and lets the user handle theirs.

This matches my observations as well and is a major reason why I've spent less time here. Chris: the problem is that most people tell me that Facebook has enough conversations for them. One of Zuckerberg's items a week ago had many thousands of comments.

Compete is about as wrong as Alexa was in the old days. Seriously, I have numerous benchmarks where I *know* the traffic and Compete is often off by serious margins. Instead, I'd use Quantcast which shows a major drop off in September, but with the bottom falling out the numbers have started to trend back up again. http://www.quantcast.com/friendf...

Thomas, that looks pretty up and to the right to me, in a long-term sense. It's fun to look at the short-term, but we're seeing no sense on a long-term scale of FriendFeed losing traffic. Great point on the Alexa and Quantcast (assuming we even need traffic graphs to keep us on here)

@Robert, I'll never argue that Facebook isn't more popular. All the cute that it offers (which isn't nearly as bad as it could be) seems to make it approachable enough to a much wider audience than a tool like FF. I get that you can filter out the fluff and minimize the Facebookishness of it, but then you're stuck with their interface and color scheme (unless I'm missing something). I guess I really see them as being different corners at the same party.

Well, I don't care what the numbers say. I get much more out of Friendfeed (in terms of discovery, engagement *and* enjoyment) than I ever have from Facebook - and I should point out that, with 2 or 3 exceptions, I've met everyone on my Facebook friends list.. Friendfeed demonstrates that it doesn't require a cast of 350 million to make a great community.

To get a good experience, friendfeed has always required you to put in a lot of time. So many active users comment on a thread and Hide it when they no longer have anything to say, if you come by a few hours later to comment you're just talking to a wall. friendfeed has never been very rewarding for casual use, in my experience, and that is doubly true now.

...still here. Still like it. Still find it useful on many levels. The thing about FF is that even at its peak, its traffic and usage wasn't even in the same league as Facebook, Twitter, or even MySpace in steep decline. The raw user numbers never (or should I say, optimistically, haven't) reached any kind of critical mass. Outside of the early-adopter and sophisticated info junkie/informavore crowds, Friendfeed, just isn't that relevant.

@zeroinfluencer I use it for conversations, along shared links and not necessarily bound for them. I can't discuss my work in public at all, apart from very generic details, hence question about using it for work/project _is_ irrelevant for me. But rest is just goes here - twitter is very far behind friendfeed for me. And facebook complements friendfeed pushing it even further.

@AT @Jessy - I use FF a lot for project dev with distributed teams - the mix of chat and sharing in private groups has proved amazing. Even team members who have never used FF before have been going "wow" why the hell haven't we used this before?

@Rob Sellen i think the main reason is that Friendfeed is better structured for conversations which is an important part of the french and latin culture. The other studpid reason (but not the first) is that FF is avail in French

Ouriel: thanks, I wondered why FriendFeed takes off in some countries like Turkey and Iran, that might explain it. But in a lot of these places it's just plain old network effects. Twitter hardly has anyone on it so far, even though it's getting lots of hype (30 million people out of seven billion in world). Since FriendFeed has better technology than Twitter it doesn't shock me that some countries take to it over Twitter.

Robert: i agree that FF leverages better the network effect by allowing for eg other network imports. But eventually some cultures are more disposed than others. Since Facebook is very popular in France the culture of newsfeed is already mainstream

I do agree with Ouriel that something is happening in France arround Friendfeed. The reason that we love conversation and that FF is a better for that is clear. The fact that is in French helps a lot too. Concerning the actual "buzz" arround FF, I would also say it's because of Feedburner Count of FriendFeed subscribers and French bloggers love this feature ;)

Ouriel just noticed on http://alexa.com that Twitter was ranked (according to traffic) 109 in France and FriendFeed 4,938. In S.Africa Twitter is ranked 7th and FF 333rd. That doesn't mean things wount change rapidly though

I've been active on FF for a very long time, and I confirm what Stanislas said: narvic http://friendfeed.com/narvic... has been the first major French Twitterer to explain why FF rocks and to encourage his followers to move in. It succeeded and some of his "popular" friends joined the movement.

I really don't think there's anything cultural that explain this growth: Friendfeed is amazing when conversations take place in real-time and when hundreds of visitors sign in in few hours, magic happens! Thanks to narvic, many users experienced the awesomeness of FF in just few days, and everyone buzzed about that. Some of them had opened their account months ago but they discovered the service and the community only in the past 10 days.

Stanislas, I think those new users don't impact Friendfeed audience significantly. How many new followers did we get? 100-200? How many new unique followers do we (Narvic, Nicolas Voisin, Autheuil, Eric Mainville... and French groups) now have? Probably less than 3000. And those newcomers probably invited no more than 5 users, on average. Those are completely made-up stats, but I doubt that this peak is that big.

More importantly, I'd like to know how much the use of internal services (native post, bookmarklet and email) by French users have increased in the past weeks. This is the only valuable indicator of FF's success, as new users who only sync their Twitter account won't find any benefit in using FF over Seesmic-web-like applications.

I wrote a post about this myself... in French. IMHO the main 2 reasons are: 1. Most French Twitter users are geeks, so they weren't afraid of switching to FF, and 2. the small size of the French blogosphere/statusphere, which allowed for a pretty quick migration. And then, of course, there's the network effect, which started out on Twitter...

FF permet de mieux trier ses flux, mais favorise surtout les échanges et les conversation autour des items qui nous intéresse. De grosses conversations structurées!

C'est quand même dommage que FF n'intègre pas les flux complet de Twitter et FB... ça donne le sentiment de perdre de l'info. Sinon je suis en train de tester Feedalizr qui supporte FF, Twitter, et FB.

@rasheen, small point here... I don't know if Loic follows you or not, but you just provided value to him by engaging in this conversation, regardless of whether he follows you or not. With FriendFeed a lot of the value is in the comments and likes as opposed to the actual updates being posted.
