IDE IS DEAD! LONG LIVE SATA! - Josh Haley
LONG LIVE ISA! - Mo Kargas
I replaced a Lite-On IDE DVD Burner with a Plextor SATA. Ahhhhhhh...feels so good to not have any ribbon cables. - Mark Krynsky
I still have a couple of external IDE drives I am using in cases, - Ian May
Mark, I did that a couple of weeks ago. All SATA II now. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
never say never again - Robert Higgins
It's the end of an era, I guess. Still, it's a shame that some machines still ship with HDDs and optical drives connected via a PATA-to-SATA bridge... - Tyson Key
Yeah I still have 6 IDE drives that just won't die so still using them in an old server and external case. - ronin
I have one of the BlacX external drive slot gizmos, that are really useful. Hot-swappable SATA drives. - Ian May
haha I read the first comment and totally saw "LONG LIVE SATAN" goodness! - jamar78
I answered a lot of questions about IDE in my day. Remeber the 512mb barrier? That is where OnTrack made a lot money bypassing cylinar limits in BIOS. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com from iPhone
so that's what an IDE looks like. - Carolyn Chan
Yea Carolyn...soon this will be another technology that time has forgotten...just like how I also have to explain to my kids how we used to drag needles through the gooves of vinyl discs to play music. - Mark Krynsky
How barbaric ! - Mo Kargas
I didn't know IDE was dead. Most of the PCs I see here in Malawi still have IDE. - Frederick Bvalani

Fernando Bergamaschi
It appears that Facebook does not provide a Status feed for your account. Any idea of how to resolve this? Thaks in advance.
Fernando, are you trying to add Facebook as a service in FriendFeed? - Kol Tregaskes
I am getting the same error message when I'm trying to add Facebook as a service to FF. - Glenn Trtanj
Guys, can you describe what you are doing exactly? Are you following the instructions on the FF dialog window? - Kol Tregaskes
I followed the instructions on the FF dialog window but still have the same issue. - Gaelyne Gasson
Yes. Guess we are all following FriendFeed instructions. And do not work. - Fernando Bergamaschi
Same here... - Konsumkind
Hasn't worked for me either. My Links and Your Notes do, but not the Status - Gary Rudolph
Same problem here. Anybody from FF feels like helping? - Carlo Mastrogiacomo
same here, I follow the seemingly obvious instructions by FF, but error message gives no clue what went wrong. Hard to know if facebook of friendfeed is source of problem. it might help if an example url was displayed. I get 'format not supported" for http://www.facebook.com/feeds... This is the link that google reader (as my default RSS) accepts. - Lane Rapp
Same problem for me, nothing to do for the status feed :( - alfredo
Like Gary Rudolph, My Links and Your Notes supposedly work, but not the Status for me. - Angela Granfield
There are some clues that I've been collecting - search on facebookstatusbroken to see my latest comment with a collection of them. Some accounts can use the methods posted, but others cannot. YMMV. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Add me to the broken list. - Christopher J. Bottaro
added to the broken list. Please someone help! - JorgeR
It isn't just FriendFeed, as I've been having trouble with Alert Thingy, too. I fear that Facebook has gone and broken itself somehow. - Miss Elle
Finally worked after following these instructions http://friendfeed.com/about... to set custom Privacy settings for "Status and Links" and check "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" (confusing thing was that even before changing this settings, I was able to find the "My Links" URL ok) - Mike Chelen
i still have the problem. even though i checked my privacy setting in facebook... - Amin
me too - Tom Roberts
Same problem - Xargon Wan
I gave up on this a while ago. - Bill Kinney
Broke as well for me. - Ben Prince
same shit here - Archangel
same problem - İlker OĞUZ
How is possible there's not a simple solution to this problem? What a sadness :( - Marco Caporicci
Same here. I believe status feed url is just broke/changed after FB renewed their design to realtime. - Jacque from fftogo
same problem :S - REDKAYA
I find it difficult to grasp why this is such a long standing issue, without a definitive statement on how to fix it, or why it won't be fixed anytime soon. (since mine works, I know this must be possible to fix) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
This is crazy I have been looking for answers to this question for like 2 hours now and can't find any solution that works. - Sean Pisano
Blame Facebook, they just won't let anything outside it's service. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
it works for me. i even added people as imaginary friends that dont have friendfeed - Edgar Rodríguez
doesn't work for me as well :( - Jörg Wißemann
Something tells me this is going to change soon ;) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
FF didn't accept FB's status feed when I joined, which was before FB took over. But I agree: I suspect that'll change... - Dennis Jernberg
Count me in. Really stupid. - Asterios Toutios
I thought after the acquisition it would work but it still doesn't work for me. - Frederick Bvalani
It's ironic that Facebook puts up such "barriers" yet lets so many crappy broken and ANNOYING apps seemingly run rampant! Just sayin... - Mark "DerBingle" J
minmax: that is because the walled system depends on the judgment of a small group for approval, whereas a more open system enables a larger pool of users to rate and comment resulting in a higher quality of evaluation - Mike Chelen from IM
same here - cannot add FB Status - but privacy settings are same as directions specify, I thin: http://screencast.com/t... - Jason Buberel
count me in - it's broken. Let me know if anyone figures this out please .. - Philip von der Borch
does not word for me as well :(((( - Roberto Cattaneo
same same - Michael Lubinski
Ditto. Privacy settings adjusted accordingly. - Lindsay Crudele
same problem - Zalesthebard
same me - Amir GT
Also having same issue. Freindfeed suggests using the freindfeed app for facebook, but that does not seem to work. The freindfeed app sends my post to freindfeed, but not to facebook status or twitter. As a side note, I have had no problems using www.posterous.com to update all services. One email and its done. I still would like to figure out how to link friendfeed facebook and twitter through freindfeed. - David Imielski
having same issues with ff updating fb status, won't work... but posterous works everytime... - Douglas Sandquist
Same here - Alexandros Georgiadis
Following the FriendFeed instructions, I got Links and Notes to work but I get "It appears that Facebook does not provide a Status feed for your account." I don't see anything denying my status under Privacy or News Feed under the new facebook, but I'm at a loss. Why is facebook not publishing my status feed? Any ideas or solutions under the "new facebook"? - ıɯoʎıʞ & uǝʞ
Mine not working too! Damn! - Akshay Vishnu B.J
Has anyone figured this out? - Karen Gutierrez
same problem! - Rachy
same problem! +1 anyone knows how to fix it? - Sentome11
Wow. This is a ridiculously long-running problem. - nickrw
i have same problem here :( - Onurhan ÖZER
Same here :( - Altech Netstar Traffic
This sucks... same here. - Icarus Holmes
don't know whether it will help or not, but I have the same issue in my account :/ notes & links are fine, but for the status, this message appears in the settings :/ - Serdar Dalgic
No solution yet? I'm experiencing the same problem right now when trying to recreate my Facebook service here. It used to work before without any problem about the status. - Rodrigo
Everyone might be getting this same error already or very soon. Facebook updated their security and APIs again yesterday, prompting them to review their Privacy Settings when they log in. - ıɯoʎıʞ & uǝʞ from iPod
Yes, I did that... and my status updates should be public. - Rodrigo from email
Still no resolution :( - riscy

I don't think so. :) But I am considering putting out some food for him/her. - Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
Poor guy looks cold. - Stephen Mack
I've seen some good 'backyard critter' food mixes at the store lately (dried corn, seeds, etc.) that might be good for something like this. - Jennifer Dittrich
She looks really cold. - AJ Batac

Uh oh! Don't let the puppehs see it! - Katy S
Tastes a bit like chicken. - Christopher A Carr
We've got a privacy fence, so they couldn't see it. Also, this was between windows, so no looking out that way either. I realized this was the only snowless strip on the driveway. It's about 1.5 feet wide. The air exchange pipes for our furnace are about 3 feet from where the bunny way, so I think he/she is probably a smart bunny enjoying the warmer air coming from the house. I put out some corn, lettuce, and a turnip. I've got corn for our squirrel feeder. - Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
It should have read "When I came home for lunch, there was lunch huddled by my house" - Frederick Bvalani
Strange. I don't remember going out yesterday. - Steven Perez
ewwww Rabbit Pellets - johnpiercy
so... any bunneh updates? - Jim Is Not Smart
I haven't been outside yet today. I'm going to shower soon and go out to shovel. Will check then. Today it's not a good day to be on that side of the house since the wind is from the west and it is wicked! We're getting below zero windchills. - Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
watch out for cats too.............they are bunneh killers too - VAL D. Zone

Ya this story is really tough to follow. :( - sean percival
ps i would never do a flu shot, doesnt seem nature. - sean percival
Sean, I've done the normal Flu shot, but it's just a bit too scary to do the H1N1 due to how new it is. If I were higher risk it wouldn't be a question though. Even with normal Flu there still isn't much data to define whether it affects things like alzheimers, etc. - Jesse Stay
Whoa that's a trip - Rodfather
I admit I thought this was a hoax when I first saw it though - Jesse Stay
@jesse oh ya a h1n1 shot is way out of the question for me, far too early! I just showed my wife the video and she had to make sure I wasn't showing her an onion video. Just about crying at the end though, really heartbreaking. - sean percival
Scary - Eric Logan
Uhm...What....the EFF. I don't do flu shots. I don't see the point. It doesn't make sense. H1N1 is no more exciting to me than the regular flu. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I don't know if her condition was really caused by a flu shot. Maybe she had it all this time and it was triggered by the flu shot? - Rodfather
Either way, I don't see the point of getting the flu shot. It's not as if my body can't fight the flu on it's own. The shot is an unnecessary variable. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Rodfather, hard to say - some neurologists say that conditions like this could be caused by vaccines like this. We simply don't have enough data yet to know for sure. IMO take it if you're in a high risk category. I'm not fully against it - I'll only take it if I can't afford the downtime though. (or if I were high risk) - Jesse Stay
The H1N1 shot is in a sense not really for you -- it is to limit the chance you will get it and spread it to others. - Brian Sullivan
Be wise - that's all I can say. As my Aunt who's a doctor said, it's up to you to make a wise decision. Only you can decide what's best for you. - Jesse Stay
holy crap..I had no idea, thanks for sharing! - Chris Myles
Has Snopes confirmed this one? - Kamilah Gill
Kamilah, it's an established news source - pretty sure this isn't a hoax - Jesse Stay
Which source is it? Still could be a hoax (think back umm.... about a week or so ago?) - Kamilah Gill
The reporter is Deborah Norvil (sp?) from InsideEdition. I find it hard to believe she made up the video - here's another source: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news... - Jesse Stay
post hoc ergo propter hoc - Matthew DeVries
Here's the story of a healthy kid who didn't get the shot. He died from complications arising out of a suspected H1N1 case a mere seven days after his first visit to the hospital, despite doctors amputating his legs in an attempt to stave off further complications. If you want to go without a shot, at the very least look at the warning signs of a "severe" infection. http://www.abc2news.com/news... - Andrew Leyden
Here's a news source that kinda refutes the original: http://www.examiner.com/x-13791... - ronin
Let's clarify, according to Snopes, for one thing, this was from a regular flu shot, not H1N1. And ++Andrew. People need to keep in mind the very real risks of skipping out on vaccinations. There's too much fixation on these isolated adverse effects that may not have even been caused by the shots. - Kamilah Gill
I ignored this story at first, and now you are telling me it's a true story? - Frederick Bvalani
So it's all in her head? - Rodfather
Wow, that's shocking. Never heard of this condition before until I saw the video. - imabonehead
It actually sounds like conversion disorder. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article... The symptoms demonstrated don't seem to fit with an anatomical lesion of the brain. At least, it doesn't seem typical of dystonia. Of course, I should probably know better than to try and diagnose something with nothing but video. - Victor Ganata
More specifically, it looks kind of like astasia-abasia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Victor Ganata

Going private on Twitter for a bit to see if it squelches the slutty single tweet whores from following me.
I tried this the other week. It helped but didn't eliminate them. I just got a lot of sketchy follower requests. - joey
I got them too, and i'm a woman.. I block them all... - Jeannette Høvring
At least they're easier to deal with because you don't have to log into Twitter to block them, you just never have to approve their requests. - Derrick
I've never taken the time to go through a block them. Why do they bug you? If you don't follow back, you don't know they're there. And they go away...eventually. - Jess
Why do they bug me? I dunno, they just do. Maybe I'm expecting too much? - Derrick
they bug me. I don't go after big follow numbers but I like knowing that the folks who are following me are actual people and not spam accounts. Just comes from my need to have things concrete I think. I'm OCD like that. I block pretty regularly - pea
i'll be using Refollow later to isolate these users/bots/spammers (specifically the ones that have appeared in the last 3 days using the same avatar) and blocking them all in one fell swoop. - Carlos Ayala
Hmm, now I'm wondering if it SHOULD bug me ,-) On the flip side of it, I've had two people I wanted to follow send me DMs suggesting that I'm spamming them with porn. WTH? It has to be my avatar because my stream doesn't scream solicitation! - Jess
I'm trying that too. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I've gotten a ton of said "slutty single tweet whores" in the last few days. They all have nearly-identical avatars, with the same font, same color, etc. I used to just ignore follows from losers like this, but now I block them. The reason is the trend of spammers retweeting things you've said, or worse, altering tweets you've made making it look like you're endorsing their wares, etc. Not good, and it only takes a few seconds to block them. - Joey Gibson
1UP Joey. - Derrick
They don't really bug me, but I block them anyway because I prefer not to have them in my followers list just in case. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I use @topify. My twitter follow email comes with stats and an option to forward the email to spam@topify.com to block and report spam. - Frederick Bvalani

Why doesn't FriendFeed have any applications? Twitter has dozens of them, for the computer and for phones.
That's weird. I would've thought there'd be at least a couple developers interested in making FF apps. Oh well. Maybe it's still a little too new. - Chris Nunz
friendfeed has a few, there just aren't as many. for example twhirl http://www.twhirl.org/ is compatible with friendfeed - Mike Chelen
I just ran a search on my iTouch applica - Juan Huitz
Got away from me... iTouch applications icon and found a good one for $2.99. - Juan Huitz
think buddyfeed is the good one for iphone? http://fftogo.com is also technically a FF app, though it is actually a website - Mike Chelen
There was twurl. Apparently developers were waiting for friendfeed to finish their new API. At least that's what @loic of Seesmic said. - Frederick Bvalani from fftogo
UPDATE: So I downloaded Twirl is I deleted it within a few minutes. Way too ugly and inefficient and it's harder to use than just coming to this website. Then as Juan noted I searched on my iPhone and found a few FF apps like he said. There's Nambu (which is free) and supports twitter, FF, and a few more. Seems to crash a lot though. Then there's FreshFeed which is $2.99 but it isn't very popular at all. Seems to have good reviews though and a new update coming soon. I may have to TOFTT. - Chris Nunz

Hah! I liked this post. - Robert Scoble
Without Scoble, Arrington, and other A-lister bloggers, it's unclear if we'd have the great advances in technology we have today. For example, would iPhone and Google exist? I'm not sure. - Cristo
Holden, yes. I'm sure they provided valuable input into the design of all the important products in the valley. And without them, nobody would have bought those products. E.g. Robert was first in line at the Palo Alto iPhone intro, so he must have created the massive sales they experienced. - Cristo
No, but Robert actually talked to Bill Atkinson. - Cristo
Cristo: that is true that I talked with Atkinson, but the iPhone would have been popular anyway. - Robert Scoble

I know for a fact that he doesn't put his pants on like me, as I don't wear pants. - Will Higgins™
For the record, I don't have anything against Robert. I don't dislike him. Knowing that other people like him does not make me "mad". I just think people take every little thing he says and blow it up into something "epic" when it doesn't really need to be. So what if he is unfollowing people? Do we make a post about every person that unfollows someone? I also think it's dumb when... more... - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
I never said I did not want to interact with him. I notice all the FF trolls showed up in this thread to bash Robert. My post did not bash Robert, nor did it set out to, but I guess much like his unfollowing posts, people will jump on anything and try to turn it into a huge thing. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
I like Robert Scoble too. but I agree with Monique that the stargazers are a bit much. I mostly ignore them. the sad part is I miss some of the meaningful comments when a FF thread reaches 60+. I also think it's funny that someone suggested Monique posted this to get attention. shows how some people (not Scoble) don't realize others exist and thrive on FF outside of tech. - jbrotherlove
What jbrotherlove said. - Derrick
Monique, maybe if Scoble would stop attracting Drama to himself by not announcing who he unfollows and blocks, he would not have so many TROLL admirers! I guess Robert likes attention? ;-) - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Maybe, Monique. But Robert's 'social' experiments and experiences are still interestings. That's all. - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Thanks Scoble! I always knew you were awesome! hehe! BTW, here is my twitter http://twitter.com/scorpion032. - Lakshman Prasad
postmodern asskissing. self referencing and aware of the hypocrisy. it works for Saturday Night Live... I guess it works on friendfeed - Noah David Simon
I'm with you monique and don't mind his rabid fan club. They're all the wannabe new media-whore types anyways. - Nemo
Pretty soon there won't be any trolls left, and friendfeed will be about as interesting as watching paint dry. - Cristo
What's annoying about Scoble is that if I'm not interested, I can unfollow (with no drama), but I still have to hear about him every freaking day. FriendFeed needs a "hide items that mention Robert Scoble" option :P - Lo
It is sad but what put Friendfeed on the map is taking it off the map. Instead of us interacting, debating, and learning about each other, we have the Scoble club which follows his every command and "pithy" word, and the open-minded people who demand equality! Sounds like a Frieendfeed revolution is in the works! What you all think? Tea party time? Remove the Blocks!!! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק

You are my new heroine. I really enjoy Scoble's work/insight, but must admit the fanboys / manlove I see on his FF stream is a bit out of hand.....I'd write more, but I'm glued to the latest video on Building 43... ;O) - Harold Cabezas

USB wristbands scream, 'I'm a nerd!' | Crave - CNET
They're the USB wristbands from USB-Hub. Basically, they're regular USB drives, up to 4GB in capacity, in the form of bracelets. The band has a rubberized exterior and makes a complete circle when you put the USB head of the drive into the other end, which is also the lid that keeps the drive protected and holds the ring together. The retention is just strong enough to keep the band from falling off your wrist by itself while still allowing you to pull the USB head out fairly easily when need be. This is actually kind of convenient and helpful, as you won't have to look in your wallet or fumble through keys and coins in your pocket to find the drive. Some of them are even sort of stylish. - Eric Logan from Bookmarklet

How I use Facebook. Log on real quick to very quickly confirm pending friend requests. Keep my fingers crossed that nobody starts chatting at me on the IM thingy. Quickly log off, whew! Made it on and off again alive -- less than 60 seconds.
I do the same, however I have changed the chat thingy to always be offline so there is no danger of being interupted ;) - Travis Koger from iPhone
how do you do that Travis? - Thomas Hawk
Ha, you turn the chat thing off. Under the "Options", just set it to "Go Offline". - Rafael Robayna
LOL, Thomas = FB n00b... kidding! What Rafael said... - Jorge Escobar
but if it takes me too much time to log on and change it, they might start chatting at me again while I'm online. Might have to try to do this late at night when nobody's on there. - Thomas Hawk

@jannnifer, I don't believe the fb chat has an 'xxx has come online popup', so it should be fine to do it whenever... Cool, thanks for posting this Thomas, I've just done the same and don't need to be afraid to go online on FB anymore. - Kenton
LOL. I used to do the same until I found out that the chat settings can be turned off. I was even happier when I found out I could hide all those stupid quizzes. Facebook isn't such a bad thing when you've got control over your content. - Carrie
I actually like the chat thingy... I have installed a chat plugin to keep those on facebook chat on my Pidgin im client in linux. :) I can only chat with some friends from facebook and I don't like to keep the fb page open. - Thirteen

Poll: When did you first discover the internet, and what were your first impressions?
1999. blew my mind. - vijay
Oh, and if you discovered the internet before the WWW existed, what was your first impression of that? - Internet's Tad from fftogo
I first started playing on the internet back in 1991 or 1992. A buddy showed me telnet bbs's and I was off to the race. I became an internet stud back in the time when the net was like 95% men. I think all of my dates in college were with women I met on internet bbs's. I met Lindsay that way. When I first started hearing about web browsing back in 93 or 94 I thought it was pretty stupid. Who'd want to look at that? It took a year or so for me to really "get" it. - Internet's Tad from fftogo
1997 and :O - Moved to Facebook from fftogo
First time on the WWW and not a BBS? '91 or '92. Thought it was BORING. Only scientific papers. Never thought it would fly. BBS was much fuller, had a broader scope of items. We had were Prodigy customers from '87 - '91, IIRC. '93 or '94, I saw someone selling their stuff online. Told the record company I was at (worked in the licensing dept. then) that it would be awesome if they put... more... - Admiral Anika

I remember playing a mud and when I realized that these guys couldn't understand me because they were playing in BRAZIL it totally blew my mind. I couldn't get over how amazing it was to be having conversations with people all over the world in real time. SideNote: room mate failed music appreciation the summer we found Muds. - Internet's Tad from fftogo
around 1997 I would guess. I swiped a 14.4 kbps modem out of our computer parts box and got all the settings off my dads computer and got it all set up. I think I was about 14 at the time. It was the cats pajamas. It was also a little disturbing once you got to like line 300 of that 400 line jpg and you found out you were actually looking at a shemale :*( - Geoff Schultz
wait wut? - Geoff Schultz
1994 but the school only had a 4800 baud modem so we were limited to BBS and usenet. Used it to read up on xfiles episodes before they were broadcast over here. I knew I'd be spending a lot of my adult life on it! - alphaxion
It was 1995. We had AOL and Compuserve. I knew that I was in love. - Shevonne
92 or 93. I remember trying to figured out how I'd find anything. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Those were some expensive shemales Dave! - Geoff Schultz
I don't really know. I was in Young Astronauts in the fifth grade when I started coding and they had a networked computer that talked to some different things. In the nineties I ran a hacker BBS with a friend and his brother. I guess I first ran into unbound net in the early to mid nineties. - Neal Jansons
1987. But it wasn't until a couple of years later that they had SLIP and then PPP so my first few years were all through a terminal connection. Although I was fascinated with Mosaic, I was an NNTP die-hard and didn't see the need of the web over it and Gopher. It wasn't until about 1997 or so that I finally got over my attachment to NNTP and embraced the web in all of its horror show glory. - Akiva Moskovitz
A friend in high school and I would modem-talk, so that was late 80s, we would call each other's computers. I'd say like '88. The first time I got excited was with the WWW, using Mosaic to download satellite infrared images of the world. I was working tech support in college, and I kept telling people how cool it was- it was my desktop image or something. - anna sauce

80s and newsgroups, I thought that sci.energy.hydrogen was going to change the world. - Robert Hafer
You were programming 9 years before I was born. That's old! :P How old were you when you started? - Yuvi from IM
1976 or '77. A school friend's dad was an astronomer and we used his university account to get on the network. We used to change people's account passwords, download files, etc. We also played games that people had available to others on the network. Nothing truly malicious, just kid jokester stuff. It was a world I'd read about but hadn't yet seen. - Heather
1995/1996-ish....holy crap! there are nekkid ladies on that internet thang! yowzee!!!! - Morgan Haley

I was in college, and we could dial into the school's network. I also had an AOL disc. I think my modem was like 9600 baud? Probably 1993-4? - Derrick
Tad, the most interactive I/O device for that was a Western Union teletype. When I got on a mainframe that supported VT100 terminals, that was something. - Robert Hafer
1987 - used "med-line" online BBS service @ $50 bucks an hour to conduct medical research for college (that is now a FREE service on the 'net). Also used Lexis-Nexis, CompuServe, and a variety of interesting "chat" services. Mostly research. 1989. I finally had something to keep me company. - Michael McKean
Probably '94... I think that's when CIS turned on Usenet access. Before that, all I knew were BBSs, CIS, and The Well. My first web experience came via GNN... I was a little indifferent at first, but fell in love with if a few weeks later. - Roger Benningfield from BuddyFeed
Wait. There's an Internet? Why wasn't informed? - BEX
1998 or 1999 probably. I was very impressed at the time, although I only started to use it in earnest around early-mid 2000s when I got around to creating a now inaccessible random-pseudonymous e-mail account, discovered the joys of "free" DRM-infested music via a proprietary application for Mac OS 8 from LiquidAudio (RIP), and spent several hours browsing, fighting with streaming radio and trying to download stuff over a fairly expensive dial-up connection that maxed out at 33.something Kbps on a good day. - Tyson Key
Oh, don't forget Tripod (doubles as an ersatz file sharing system between myself and a friend via FTP), GeoCities (the time I dabbled with HTML) and ICQ... - Tyson Key
I 1st discovered the internet in 1995 (Worldnet, France). Impressed but continued to use & B SysOp of BBS and french RTC ;) - Thierry R. Andriamirado
1994. I ended up in a dorm that didn't have Ethernet, so we had to access the campus network through 14.4k modems. Mosaic was unusable at that speed, so we used Lynx. How did we find anything back then, since search engines didn't exist yet? - Victor Ganata
1994 or so, on the computers in the lab at CSUS. I didn't really get it for a couple years after that. - Bren -- Not Grinchy
The internet? Well if you count the Usenet, then 1989 with several BBS's that had a connection to the newsgroups. Actual internet with email and everything. PCLink came out sometime in the early 90's. Turned into AOL and the rest is history. - CW™
Quite late for me... i was already 20, in the late 90's. And i think i was just Napster at the time :) - diego morelli
I discovered the Internet as it is today in about '97-98 I think, signed up to MSN. I thought it was OK, I think it took a few weeks for me to 'get it'. I used BBS for many years before this though. - Kol Tregaskes
97 9th grade. Had one classroom with it. Didn't like the prof. Left internet alone mostly until 2000 and had a T1 in dorm. - Amber, Random Time Lord
My dad got Prodigy in '88 or '89 and I remember finding the bulletin boards and thinking it was SO COOL. I also found an online game that took ages for each screen to load. But we had that briefly so I really remember getting it in '96 when we got AOL and I got all involved in chatting and even met up with a guy! This was when we all had to write down how long we'd been on because you... more... - Lis Miller

But the real discovery was coming to the U.S in around 98/99 and suddenly realising pages could load in less than 30 minutes a time...the only bad thing was coming back to the UK and AOL dial-up but once that was gone, it was all plain sailing... - Absolute Radio

1995 I was given a laptop at work to take home and sort out some stuff, I noticed it had a modem, plugged in and dialled up. I believe it was Compuserve I only remember seeing photos of Mars. in 1980 my summer job was working in a computer room for Mohawk Data Sciences. (yes I am old) Was active in BBS's in the early 90's- Actual internet as we know it today - was using Trumpet Winsock in 1995, with Netscape 2.0 - i think.... - Mike Nencetti

1990 in the offices of the East-West Center in Honolulu, a friend showed me Usenet over a VT-100 connection. I'd already heard of the Net from Jeffrey Hallett, former president of the Naisbitt Institute, but this was my first chance to see it live. - Shel Holtz
2001. can't remember, sorry :( - Timo Heuer
For me it was 1994. I was a SAHM but always interested in new things. I'd heard the word "internet" and wasn't even sure what it was other than it connected computers but somehow I knew I wanted access to it and that it would be important. I had to do a lot of searching and asking around to find anyone who knew where to get service in my area. I went through over $500 in "credits" or hours online in my first 2 months. Been hooked ever since ;) - Merlene
in 1.994 i was studying architecture and i decided to change my life working with internet - cpons
1988. It was awfully boring back then, just ftp and email. - DGentry
I don't really remember my first impressions, as it was back in 1986-1987 and it wasn't that big a deal. I was working for the University of Michigan computer network as a student back at the time--helping out in the computer labs--when UofM connected it's Merit network up with NSFNET from MCI and an IBM network into an "internetworked" system. Later, I vaguely remember using Gopher, IRC, USENET, and remember reading a USENET post from some guy in Switzerland talking about some web of hyperlinked pages... - Ken Sheppardson
Hard to say. I used Promenade (now AOL) when I got my first PC in 1992. I didn't consider that the Internet though. I guess that would be junior high, 1987. I was on the academic decathlon team and our advisor showed us how to research information from a local university's "online" papers. I remember thinking the modem was a hoot...one of those acoustic coupler jobs...but being online irritated me. I preferred going to a library in person. Probably '92 or '93. Went online through AOL and a 2400 baud modem. Was too slow to be of much use, though, so I stuck with AOL and dialing up local BBSs. Once I upgraded my modem to a 14.4, though, I was able to browse the Web at reasonable speeds and had my mind blown by the sheer mass of information on totally obscure topics that was available online - info that was previously only available in micro-run niche zines. - Eric Tatro
Late 80's, gopher, usenet, WAIS--"Who's getting all this info together and who's paying them?"--early 90's, Mosaic--"Needs some color and movement. Someone's going to want to put an ad on that." - S. Charles Balazs

1993 (I think). I just enjoyed mailing lists and USENET. - cecily
Oh, wait - BBSes count? Then my first foray was '92. - cecily
If BBSs count, my first foray was probably 1983. However I don't think BBSs would count: they were modem-connected islands, not using what is now the Internet. - DGentry
Yeah, unless the BBS had an Internet gateway. A local WildCat BBS had an NNTP connection around 1988 or so. Before then, they were either independent or linked by FIDOnet (and boy do I miss me some FIDOnet hacking). - Akiva Moskovitz

Dick and I saw Netscape for the first time in late 1994. We signed up with our first ISP, mo.net, in early 1995, and I could have pitched my Maritz client's first web site in spring 1995, but we went to a funeral in VA instead.
