Suggestion: Rename "Direct messages" to clarify the fact that they can be A) public and B) addressed to multiple parties. I worry that too many people will expect DMs to work like they don on Twitter and then neglect to use them to their fullest potential.
Two concerns: 1) What would a better name be? "Addressed to me"? - Daniel J. Pritchett
2) Is the "DM" name powerful enough to warrant keeping even if it's a misnomer? It may well be that having so-called direct messages on the feature list is enough to win a lot of new users, even if they come in with the wrong idea about what FF DMs can be. - Daniel J. Pritchett
"Addressed to me" I'd like that. It actually makes more sense as a name for a filter! - Meryn Stol
Could I also make a filter "Addressed to Daniel"? (e.g. addressed to you?) if so, how? That is, for any "public" messages. - Meryn Stol
I don't like addressed to me, because: what do you call it when you're sending outbound? Or how do you request someone message you? I mean "post addressed to me" is awkward, hence the DM abbreviation. I think Notices would work just fine. - FFing Enigma
I too like "notices". @Meryn - you can make an "addressed to daniel" filter now by building a custom search for things mentioning me with "-from:dpritchett" tacked onto the end. I'm not sure that would catch public DMs though, I'll have to check. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Tina, agree "notices" works for me too. - Kol Tregaskes
I love the fact that I can harness the subscriber list of a focused room(feed) with a post that's also on my feed. This beats the pre-beta solution where I'd have to post in one place, re-share to the other, and fret as people liked and commented on two separate threads. Now we're sure to get more likes and comments on our topical posts, and all in one place! - Daniel J. Pritchett
I still need to learn to work with the "addressing" feature of FF. Have not adapted yet. But FF is quickly turning into a "different kind of email" this way. Gmail already had the concept of "conversations" built-in. FF results in faster conversations, which are optionally public, or visible to a group. Really interesting. - Meryn Stol
I think this can really make a splash in business. Although I think it would work best if there would be an interface which mimics MS Outlook. People are used to that look. MS Outlook skin for FF. Trojan Horse. >:) - Meryn Stol
I'll bet AJ Batac could make FF look like Outlook with another userscript. I might die if I saw it in action though. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, anyone could make a custom CSS for their DM page and that skin over it. - FFing Enigma
Oh didn't realize there was a parallel convo in progress: We talked about this too http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Ahsan Ali
