Perhaps I'm in a minority here (it's not a biggie with me either just putting it out there for discussion) but it might be interesting to use my bit.ly with FF so to track click-throughs. So instead of the ff.im we had our bit.ly tracked URLs. If not, could we have tracking features on the ff.im URLs like we have for our bit.ly URLs?
What are your thoughts? #betakoltag-sg-postscomments - Kol Tregaskes
I'm not using bit.ly much yet, but I agree: having tracking features would be great. - Brome
Yes, I think that would be ideal. Just a hit list would be interesting to see. It's not a high priority though. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
There's one advantage to ff.im shortcuts - they're indirectly validated and trustworthy (=point only to FF posts). Bit.ly and other shorturls are by definition potentially harmful... - ianf ⌘

Another excuse to have a dropdown menu and in relation to this suggestion: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf.... How about a 'track this thread from this comment' option on a dropdown on the comment icons where you can track comments made *after* the selected comment?
Again, a page for tracked comments would show all these. Sometimes you just want to track a thread from after a certain point. Something like this would help. #betakoltag-sg-postscomments - Kol Tregaskes

Kol Tregaskes
On certain pages you are shown what feeds a post is shared to (e.g. this post will show, on my lists, that it's been posted to my feed, Feedback and Beta feeds). Can we please have this on all pages? I'm looking at my profile feed and cannot see this, even though some posts have been shared to multiple feeds.
Yes I know, it means an extra line. What do you think? #betakoltag-sg-postscomments - Kol Tregaskes
If it's posted to one feed (i.e. the one you are looking at) then there is no need for this extra info or line but I find it useful to know if posts have been posted to multiple feeds. - Kol Tregaskes
Side note - do we need to colorize DMs that are also posted to a user's home feed? I'd hate to think of some poor sap embarrassing himself on a DM thread that he only though was private. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I think that's an important point, at least a clear indication it's shared to an specific user or users - well on the Direct messages page, for sure. If I pick up a DM and it's shared to a public feed too I'd definitely want it as clear as day that this is the case. - Kol Tregaskes
I think that's really important, Daniel. I'll post a separate request for that linking back to here. - Kol Tregaskes
Bump. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol Tregaskes
Is there a need to have FF tell you if an article you are sharing has already been posted in that feed? For example in rooms/groups.
The dup detector works well (in the old FF UI) so it must be possible? It would help keep feeds (rooms/groups) tidier perhaps. #betakoltag-sg-postscomments - Kol Tregaskes
FF could do better than Digg as it could check the link in the title? - Kol Tregaskes
Tha sounds like a great idea - Iván Abrego
It might be the same article, but possible a totally new conversation. If you knew about the other conversation, you probably wouldn't post it again I think. - Meryn Stol
So this would be for Rooms only? - Brian Sullivan
Multiple conversations around the same article is a fact of life. - Meryn Stol
A warning would be very helpful, since now I first have to search to see if it's posted before. Or even better, tell me if the link has been posted by ANY feed I subscribe to, including friends. Then I can just go comment on an existing post instead of posting my own thing. - Daniel Sims
Meryn, in that feed yes. So you go to share something, e.g. via the bookmarklet, it checks on the feed(s) you have selected to post to if the article is already there, and if so, notifies you that it's already shared, do you wish to continue. Or something like that? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Since the people you are subscribed to may not be the same as those subscribed to you it doesn't really make much sense to search your feed to determine whether you should post something or not. Just post and let the readers sort it out is my philosophy. - Brian Sullivan
Daniel, I'd be happy to search only the feeds you have selected to post to. - Kol Tregaskes
Brian, I'm thinking of rooms (groups) mainly. If it checked those rooms (groups) to see if it's already there and warn you, that would be helpful, no? - Kol Tregaskes
Brian, that is true, but thanks to the magic of FriendFeed, people who subscribe to me see what I commented or liked. At the minimum, it would be nice to know what the people I follow said about the same thing, especially if it was already discussed to death a few days before. - Daniel Sims
I'd love to see that feature across the site. - Bill Sodeman
Kol -- yes the Room check would be useful - Brian Sullivan
Yes. It would be cool to have this and that it work dependable. The current dupe detector in FF does not work reliably. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
No need, but might be useful in rooms. - Ton Zijp

Kol Tregaskes
Several have requested that we could star/fav posts please? We could then have a starred/faved post feed and could be used for a kinda read it later or track the posts.
well, isn't that was "Like" is for? - Nathan Chase
Nathan, gosh no I use "Like" for all sorts of things, to share, to bump, to say I like... - Kol Tregaskes
Ahsan, I'm not worried about it being public or private myself. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Ahsan, I use like for all sorts of things like I say above. But if I can star something for tracking and for reading later that would be useful. - Kol Tregaskes
my solution to this problem was to create a private Friendfeed room and reshare items to it that I wanted to look at later. But resharing seems to have vanished from the beta for now. - Nathan Rein
Nathan, yeah that sounds like a good idea. Reshares are coming soon to the beta. - Kol Tregaskes
A like is functional in terms of having an impact on ranking of posts ( for want of a better term). A watch should have no effect. - Roberto Bonini
@Kol, well I guess the issue is there are power users, like some of us - and then there are people who don't get FriendFeed in the first place. To give them the ability to like, star, hide, comment - it's just too many things that involve comprehension and explanation as to why they should do any of it... it's a fine line for FriendFeed - meeting the needs of information junkies AND people that just share with their close friends and family - Nathan Chase
Nathan, Roberto pointed out that resharing wipes out the comments are it's only a link to the original so you couldn't follow the comments. I guess the currently solution would be selective with your likes. - Kol Tregaskes
Isnt that what Liking a post does? - Tony C (Unrated) from fftogo
I always use Like becuase I, wait for it, Like the post. - Roberto Bonini
Earl, people use "like" for all sorts of reasons. I have multiple purposes for likes (for one it shares it to the people that subscribe to me), to have a way to fave a select few to track would be an interesting addition. - Kol Tregaskes
Roberto, "like" are more features than that, of course (see my comment just above here). :-) - Kol Tregaskes
You could expand this idea to be able to configure multiple "switches". E.g. switches for "like"/"star"/"track"... This can function as a kind of tagging. - Meryn Stol
yeah, my solution is only a partial solution - it's a way of bookmarking posts I like, but you'd still have to click through for each one to follow the discussion. Not perfect. - Nathan Rein
I've been looking into an RSS feed for individual entries. Did there used to be that or a way to do it? - Araceli
you could potentially do what Gmail does with their "multiple stars" add-on in Labs - where you click the star, and it becomes a checkmark - click again it becomes an exclamation point, etc. - the drawback being that you'd have to choose ONE option ultimately... you're either saving it, liking it, or neither - Nathan Chase
Very true, Kol. - Roberto Bonini

Should FriendFeed's "friend list" be called "friend list" when you can add groups to them too?
What are your thoughts? #betakoltag-ob - Kol Tregaskes

Kol Tregaskes
Why have my filters been pushed to the bottom of the sidebar. Please put them back, I don't want them at the bottom! :-(
No, no, no, no, no. - Kol Tregaskes
Correct, I too want them up there, directly after Friends list which, btw., DOES NOT NEED additional groupings into Favorites/ Personal/ Professional taking up screen real estate. Also, renaming Filters to "Saved Searches" is the wrong move, esp. since the latter string is far longer. Incidentially, Groups Prefs do not work for me - Groups shows 4 items even though I tried to revert it back to former 2. If Friends, Groups and Filters are to be separate, I'd place Groups last. - ianf ⌘
Bump up text size to 24p, and browse it on a 13" laptop's screen - then you'll see how Filters (now Saved Searches) fall off the display. - ianf ⌘
Ianf: Your Friends panel shows all the friends lists that you have. If you want all your friends in one list, you can put them in one list and delete all the other default lists. But those lists were already there. And the string "Saved Searches" doesn't take up nearly as much width as the names of most of my groups. :) - Karl Knechtel
There does seem to be a bug if you try to put fewer than 4 items in your Groups. - Karl Knechtel
@Karl - there's no option to delete selected (empty) lists, not via the Browse/Edit Friends option at the bottom. Similarly, Groups panel seems stuck at minimum 4 items there. - ianf ⌘
@Ianf: Select the empty list in question (you'll have to do each one separately), and click 'Delete' at the top. :) I agree this could be streamlined better. - Karl Knechtel
Ahsan, yes FF should. There is no way I want my Saved Searches at the bottom there!! If you have a lot of Subscriptions is *very* annoying to scroll way down to get to, what I would say, is FriendFeed's second most important new filter behind real-time! Please put back or give us the option to select what boxes we see and where they are in the sidebar? #betakoltag-ob - Kol Tregaskes
Yes ++ Ahsan and Kol, I have more Groups than Saved Searches - I use my saved searches more than groups. If your Saved Searches are falling off the page - try viewing at 90% 0r 80%. (Viewing at 100% is far too big for me, and I'm half blind.) -[ - Chris Loft

I have to say I switching from not liking the ability to add links from the share box to preferring it (and adding the link manually in the title). It makes the title clearer to me (well with the CleanerFF script on). But can we please have the ability to edit the link?

I like that the share box remembers where I posted to previously (though I wish that followed me when I move to another pages).
Ha, I just posted that I didn't like that because I accidentally post to the wrong place :) - Glenn Slaven

*Sticky* posts in Rooms. Admins will lurve it IMO. :)
Possibly interesting, sure. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

oh yeah. - zeroinfluencer
Do you think stickys should be limited, e.g. by 1 or 2? - Kol Tregaskes
as long as there's a facility for atleast 1, I don't mind :) - vijay
I'm bumping this again. I think this would be really useful. The ability to lock, say, up to 3 posts to the top of the feed would be ideal and to switch off commenting on those posts. Sure you can temporarily do this but switching the room's settings but I'm thinking of a permanent lock. I'd be more interested in the locking of comments on selected posts than the sticky part. :-) #betakoltag-sg-groups - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, we should do a "Top 10 FF beta WANTS" meme. - vijay

Suggestion:- Rooms - DM all members of a room in one shot. Admins will find it very useful IMO.
Just make sure only room admins can use it. Even then, great potential for abuse. - Chris Charabaruk
Ofcourse, only admins or maybe only the Room Creator/Super Admin can use it. Even if the system does get comprised, a block will solve it in a click. :) - vijay
Could do, but you'd hope they are reading your room anyway, hehe. Seriously though, interesting idea. #betakoltag-sg-groups - Kol Tregaskes

FF Group Suggestion: Suggestions for groups in the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. Ability to delete groups. - Kol Tregaskes
2. Ability for admins to DM members, e.g. group announcements: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
3. Sticky posts that permanently stick to the top of the feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
4. Ability to lock comments on selective posts, useful for potential sticky posts: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
I still don't understand what rooms, groups etc. are supposed to be or how they differ from feeds. - Karl Knechtel
Karl, everything is a feed, so groups = feeds - "groups" (new UI) used to be "rooms" (old UI). Does that help? - Kol Tregaskes
5. Easy inviting system should be a similar screen to the one we have for selecting what Subscriptions to show on your sidebar. - Kol Tregaskes
6. Notifications for group membership changes and list of groups we admin on the Subscription page: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
Great suggestions. This is one of the big things that bugs me about the beta UI. - Jen (SquirrelGirl)
Some good ideas here. Especially the stickies and invitations. Locking could well apply system-wide (i.e. in any feed). - Karl Knechtel
Sure, possibly. - Kol Tregaskes
7. Email notifications for groups (could help migrate users used to mailing list groups like Yahoo Groups: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
8. The group description, name and username should be saved when you click to add services or change the group's picture. At the moment changes are lost. A warning should appear at least. Having them save would mean you wouldn't have to go into the group settings page twice, for example, to add a description and a service upon creating a new group. - Kol Tregaskes
I'm very picky about my urls, if I create a private group, can the url be "http://friendfeed.com/hoopsom..." ? Ultimately I'd like to be able to "tag" content and then look at all content I've tagged or labled by going to a specific url under my username. groups are more powerful than tags because I can auto-populate them in lots of interesting ways. I think of tags as a generalization of "like" I don't want to say that I like something just because I want to be able to find it later. - Hoop
Hoop, no to the URL, groups are in the format: http://friendfeed.com/<groupname>. As for tagging, yep, simply add a # before a word and that turns into a link to the search for that word, e.g. #FriendFeed or for all my suggestions and bugs posts like this use #betakoltaglist - Kol Tregaskes
How about "liking comments"...like the ones on this post? Could be a nightmare for FF coders... - Mitchell Tsai

FF Observations & Likes: General comments and things liked on the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. I’m in favour of removing the service icons as it means less discrimination towards certain types of posts but still feel there is a need for a few services like Last.fm, that need to be clear to users: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
2. I like that there is no add link feature, it simplifies the posting process and makes the title a little tidier. Having the link at the end of the title is fine but perhaps that is one place where the full URL needs to be visible?: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
3. I like that the share box remembers the last feeds I posted to: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
4. I think the Saved Searches should be moved back OR ideally we given the option to select what boxes appear on the sidebar and in what order: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
5. I like that "filters" are now called "saved searches" - it makes sense and makes it easier to understand, especially for newcomers. - Kol Tregaskes
6. Perhaps "friends list" should be changed to "subscriptions list": http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol #2: displaying full URL after a title is untenable in practice, since urls can be arbitrarily long (or is it 1024 chars at most?). So you'll end up having to shorten them anyway. Therefore it's be better to do away with the "http://www." bit entirely, show just the domain followed by "..." followed by a certain number of characters of the LAST element in it. E. g. this <http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment...> would become <guardian.co.uk/.../film-hitler> - ianf ⌘
7. Creation of a new feed is confusing. At the moment we have to go into the Groups page and create new "groups". Perhaps the Create new Feed should be resurrected to the bottom of the sidebar?: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
8. There is some confusion with the FOAF feature and where it works and where is doesn't work: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
9. There might be less spam in the FF-Feedback room if there was a clear guide after new users have registered. The first thing they see is the FF-Feedback group group entries on their home feed (as they are automatically subscribed to the FF-Feedback group). A quick overview or tutorial would really help. Perhaps new users should go through a mini questionnaire asking them of their interests and then FF suggests some groups they might like relating to their input. - Kol Tregaskes
agreed with 9, because it's great to direct people to the room but confusing if they are not aware of what is happening - Mike Chelen

FF Post/Comment Suggestions: Suggestions for posts and comments in the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. Dropdown menu on the comment icon with options such as “track thread from here” and a feed with these posts and the comments added after this point: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... and http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
2. Related to the suggestion above, the ability to share a comment directly to a user: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
3. Display what posts are shared to where on every page, for example, there is no display on our profile feed when posts are shared to multiple feeds: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
4. Duplicate post warning when posting an article already posted to that particular feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
5. Star a post and have a feed showing these starred posts - useful to track specific posts for a period or to add to a “read later” feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
6. Ability to edit/add/remove images to a shared post: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
7. Links for comments - simply use the permalink but use anchors to link to a specific comment on that page: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
8. When a thread is expanded by clicking on the more link either the comment button should drop down to the bottom of the thread or a copy of the whole line (comment, like, hide) should appear under the last comment. - Kol Tregaskes
9. Better comment viewing control, e.g how many comments to see at the top or bottom: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
10. You can expand (unfold) a thread, how about folding them back?: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
11. Threaded comments but perhaps limited to a depth of 1 or 2: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
I would love it if we could 'like' a comment. Some comments are just as good or if not better than the post itself. - Lennart Olsen
Little icons next to the items showing what service it comes from would be an awesome feature, especially if you could click on them to filter by that content type. - Mr. Gunn
Not sure what 3 is talking about. 4 seems hard to implement with so much posting being automated by services. 5 seems redundant if we can just have a quick way to repost things - then you can just repost it to a private feed that you create for the purpose. I have my own thoughts about implementing 11. Otherwise, very much agreed, especially 7 through 10. - Karl Knechtel
Karl, for 3 the link probably explains it more but if you share something via the share box to your feed + another feed, say the Feedback group, if you go onto your feed it doesn't show you that that post has also been shared to the Feedback group. - Kol Tregaskes
Karl, for 4, well it already does detect duplicates (as you can see in the old UI) so must be possible to check this *before* posting. 5. A reshare feature is certainly a workaround for this but it needs to reshare it properly (i.e not like the old UI reshare) and share the comments as well. - Kol Tregaskes
Feel free to share you thoughts on 11, Karl. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
I explained my idea in the linked discussion (http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf...). I'm pretty new here BTW so I really have no idea how things work in the old UI ;) - Karl Knechtel
Ah OK, Karl. The reshare in the old UI basically is a link to the original post, so no comments are shared or synced. What would be nice is that the new reshare feature acts the same way as posting something to multiple feeds from the share box. So once you reshare it puts that post in that feed and all comments and likes. etc. are synced. Hope that makes sense? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Keeping comments/likes etc. synced has its pros and cons. Basically, it avoids confusion, but raises questions about privacy policy e.g. if something is reshared from a public feed to a private one or vice-versa. - Karl Knechtel
Karl, very true, I don't think DMs between users only should be share-able. Only ones shared to your feed and groups. Fairly easy rule? - Kol Tregaskes
It's not just about DMs... say I have an invite-only feed, and invite a few people in and they comment on my items there because I'm awesome ( ;) )... and then someone wants to re-share one of those items to a public group. Or say I want to re-share from the public group into my invite-only feed. What happens with comments? - Karl Knechtel
Karl, then DMing from a private groups should be blocked. It's a goo point on posting from public to private. Any anyone suggest what could be done here? - Kol Tregaskes
I'm sure that isn't the only issue, either, although I can't think of more right now. - Karl Knechtel
12. Ability to drag and drop images into the Photos part of the share box: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
ability to post gadgets on the left from main pane .. ability to resize everything :] - pb:
Petr, thanks. I think that comment is more appropriate for this feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... :-) - Kol Tregaskes
13. Ability to share from the share box to Google Reader Shared Items: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
14. Click-through tracking features and/or the ability to use 3rd party URL shorteners like bit.ly: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
15. A blog-to feature to post your FF entry to your blog direct from the share box/bookmarklet: http://beta.friendfeed.com/jworthi... - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, what do you do, read my mind? (all these "0 seconds ago," too). - ianf ⌘
16. To make FF useful as a user's blog, the ability to format, say, the first 3 comments from the share box before posting, this would need a comment box to return to the share box: http://beta.friendfeed.com/jworthi... - Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, 0 seconds? I smell a bug there. - Kol Tregaskes
A two-pane share box? I don't think so. - ianf ⌘
2 panel? - Kol Tregaskes
Well, thank you Kol for reheating this urlinfested missive - now I can kiss the rest of the day good-bye. Lots of interesting suggestions, some downright asking to be implemented, some misguided ones. Misguided, because you can't just pile features and options onto such a complex piece of software as is the FF without extracting a penalty in lowered usability/ raised complexity (and then there are the delicate problems of entropy and spaghetti code...). - ianf ⌘
Me, I'd gladly give up ability to share stuff to other blogs (=quite a big undertaking) if only I could unobtrusively link to and respond to comments, e.g. <http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf...> - ianf ⌘
Ianf, feel free to view your opinions on the suggestions, that's why they are posted here. ;-) Could do with more detail on "misguided ones". ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Ad #1: no dropdown menus, make it default behavior; #2: "ability to share a comment directly to a user" - like DM the commenter with commentID appended? nice, but perhaps too much of a luxury; #3: "display which posts are shared to where" – no, too much info; #4: "Duplicate post warning" - no warnings, has to be default behavior (preventing this, while noting the effort) unless posting... more... - ianf ⌘
Ad #8: disposition options should appear under the last comment - already outlined here <http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf...>; #9: YES to "Better comment viewing control" - I'd be happy with default visible topmost, [any nymber of folded ones] + last two in thread; #10: "folding back... more... - ianf ⌘
Ad #13: "Ability to share from share box to Google Reader Shared Items" - no, this cross-posting incest HAS to stop. Decide which ones are your primary web-browsing fora, and which ones post-op. This one's the latter, and what a diamond it is.; #14: "Click-through tracking features" - tracking what? how? "and/or the ability to use 3rd party URL shorteners like bit.ly" - nobody's... more... - ianf ⌘
17. Little icons next to the items showing what service it comes from would be an awesome feature, especially if you could click on them to filter by that content type. - Mr. Gunn <I agree with Mr Gunn> -] - Chris Loft
Ad #16: I'm not against making FF Be-All-To-All-People, but that's asking for trouble: "(To make FF useful as a user's blog,) the ability to format, say, the first 3 comments from the share box before posting, this would need a comment box to return to the share box." You mean "format" as in HTML? Uh-oh. Wrong metaphor. Elsewhere: you want to share text and (apparently off-page)... more... - ianf ⌘
Ad #17: The "little icons" are called "service icons" and the Beta.FF has withdrawn them. They're not coming back no matter how much you kvetch since their absence is central to the gentle visual hum-model that FF team has chosen for their project. Your (and others') longing for reinstatement of these is pure, but in the circumstances superfluous, emo. You CAN filter out posts based on their verbose "service:source" parameter, no need to do that visually on post-by-post basis. - ianf ⌘
Oh, is that what they are called? It doesn't matter what you call them - I still want them back. They are functional and descriptive, as well as iconic. Is that official that they have been withdrawn and are never coming back?? How do you know this?? I hate scanning lines and lines of text - without some graphic 'feel' FF becomes too text based - and I start to go dyslectic. I wonder if... more... - Chris Loft

FF Tips: Tips found while using the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. Use brackets () to shorten your search text: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
2. To search for a group or user just start typing the name in the search box and options that match will appear in the dropdown. - Kol Tregaskes
3. For adding photos via the share box use the image's URL instead of the long route of saving the image to you local machine and adding it that way. - Kol Tregaskes
4. To quickly get to the advanced search page just click the Search button with nothing in the box. - Kol Tregaskes
5. In Firefox and Chrome at least you are able to drag and drop a user's name into the comment box. Perhaps one way to mark a comment as a 'reply'. Tip came from: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... - Kol Tregaskes

FF General Suggestions: General suggestions for the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. Indications for all your feeds (not just DMs) to show the number of new posts and possibly new comments + Ability to click on the number and have it go to a page where it shows only these new posts (and probably ones that come in after) and not the old posts: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
2. New comment flash duration increased or optional length setting: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
3. Optional auto-translation: translates (perhaps uses Google Translate?) to a selected language: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
4. If the service icons are not to turn (which I’m kinda switching to liking) then we need the duplicate detector to be added with settings to prioritise selective services: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... UPDATE: Dup detector is back but not perfect and still does not work with micro-blogging services. See suggestions... more... - Kol Tregaskes
5. FF Status update feature: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
IMPLEMENTED: 7. A “smooth” real-time feature – with real-time still on and new posts and comments coming in that are pushing entries down the page, have the post you are viewing mid-page down stay exactly where it is on your screen while the scroll bar moves down. Avoids the “jumping” effect: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
8. New bookmarklet with the same new features the new share box. - Kol Tregaskes
9. New Notifier which allows, for example, selection of your filters. - Kol Tregaskes
10. DiggBar like features for FriendFeed (VERY LOW): http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... and http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
11. Real-time everywhere, including searches with a pause button on every page. - Kol Tregaskes
IMPLEMENTED: 12. RSS feeds everywhere, including filters/searches: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
13. Best of pages for every feed including the “Everyone” feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
14. Options from the Accounts page added, preferably to the new Settings page? - Kol Tregaskes
15. Import Google Share Items comments: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
16. Better importing of images via the Google Reader service: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
17. Improved User Recommendations for new users: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
18. Subscribe to specific services for specific users. - Kol Tregaskes
19. Support for services like Gravatar: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
21. Convert imaginary friends to public feeds (bulk if possible). - Kol Tregaskes

23. Floating pause button. (LOW) - Kol Tregaskes
24. Static mode refresh rate, like the old UI: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
25. Categories or tagging, for example to set posts in “photography” so that they can be found under the URL http://friendfeed.com/koltreg... then users could have the option to select what categories to subscribe to for each user: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
26. Widget to integrate our real-time profile feed into our blogs. - Kol Tregaskes
27. More keyboard shortcuts, for example, J = next post, K – previous post: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
Dm reply to all or to sender only :) - Felter Roberto from twhirl
28. Ability to collapse and expand the separate sidebar panels, e.g. a +/- to open/close your list of Subscriptions. - Kol Tregaskes
Jerome's idea applies generally. Keyboard shortcuts currently have virtually no discoverability beyond word-of-mouth. - Karl Knechtel
29. A private feed showing us our new subscribers - with an RSS feed: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
The "Find your Friends" in the beta seems limited - can't search for email or Twitter contacts like in the non-beta. - Stuart Miniman
just testing. I'd like to be able to resize the collums. I find reading comments less intuitive here. - Richard A. from Friend Deck
Are you talking about FriendDeck, Richard? If so leave feedback in the FD room here: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendd... - Kol Tregaskes
30. Imaginary friends URLs need to be looked at, we don't want to be taking away nicknames of users that might want to actually join FF later: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
Another reason to do the namespacing thing I was getting at elsewhere (i.e. /namlhaz/feeds/johnqpublic wouldn't prevent Mr. Public from signing up later). Which also allows me to have a "webcomics" private feed while other users also have one. :) - Karl Knechtel
Karl, this could be a reasonably good workaround for my request for categories. I'd still need to tag the entries in some way but could use, for example, http://beta.friendfeed.com/koltreg... for my photography tagged posts, which I could share out in a nice tidy-ish URL. It's not perfect as I would need to use a unique tag name but not a bad solution. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
31. Subscription request should appear on your profile page, not just your home feed page: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
The "/" search shortcut conflicts with the firefox search shortcut, which uses the same key. - Jason P
32. Ability to select what boxes appear in the sidebar and in what order: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
33. Ability to see how many times your posts have been re(shared): http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
34. Possibly extend the amount of entries per page from 100: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
35. In relation to the newly implemented scroll option from point 7, perhaps the sidebars should stay with us too: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
36. Privacy settings on services; set which ones are visible to which friends (so need 2 of more levels of friends): http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
39. Tweetdeck does not expand ff.im urls. - Roberto Bonini
37. If we have group email notifications (see point 7 here: http://friendfeed.com/friendf...) could we have options to show images in emails that are linked in comments plus show our comments so to see the whole thread in email without the need to go to FF: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
38. Subscribe notifications need to be clearer for when someone subscribes to your likes or your comments: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes

FF Direct Messages Suggestions: Suggestions for Direct messages (DMs) in the new FriendFeed UI: #betakoltaglist
1. DMs to everyone regardless to if you subscribe to each other, but with a on/off toggle. - Kol Tregaskes
IGNORE: 2. Public DMs (LOW). - Kol Tregaskes
3. Change “Direct messages” to “Notices”: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
IMPLEMENTED: 4. IM alerts for DMs. - Kol Tregaskes
5. DMs also shared to a public feed need to be far clearer so the user knows the message is publicly visible: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
1: I assume you mean a toggle like "accept DMs from people you don't subscribe to". 2: makes no sense to me. 3: Agreed. 4: +1, but a bad implementation could ruin the idea. 5: My gut reaction is that there are a lot of logical pitfalls lurking about here. 6: I don't really like the idea of distribution lists. If you just add to a feed, everyone can see it anyway. What we need is a way to draw subscribers' attention to the presence of a new item. - Karl Knechtel
Karl, for 1, I believe DMs will be open to everyone regardless of whether each of you subscribe to the other. If so, then a toggle to turn it off for people who don't want to be DM'ed would probably be need. - Kol Tregaskes
Karl, for 2 I think this can actually be done anyway, you can post to a user but also to your own feed, thus a "pulbic" DM. So can ignore 2. - Kol Tregaskes
Karl, the idea for 6 came up from Alex as he sends out his stock market game results as DMs. If you look at one of these the list is huge and messy. Sure the names need to be seen but to have a dist. list that you can post to would be far easier to maintain than adding all those users every time you post to them. So it's more a private dist list you can create, edit and use. - Kol Tregaskes
can i delete a DM sended to me? i don't want to see it and his comments. - Felter Roberto
a choice "comment only to sender" or "comment to all" - Felter Roberto
Felter, you are able to delete the entry but that would delete it from your DM page and he feed. There is no way to remove it from his feed only and thus turned into a private-style DM. Interesting feature to have though. - Kol Tregaskes
Felter, I think the two comments options would get very complicated. What does everyone think, though? - Kol Tregaskes
if i receive a DM, my reply could be important only for the sender, why all the other have to read it? - Felter Roberto
7. The ability to send a DM or DM to multiple users and groups via email You can reply but not initial send atm. [cannot find reference post, sorry but was with discussion with Johnny] - Kol Tregaskes
8. Ability to unsubscribe to a DM (remove yourself from the feed: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. I believe that gentleman's name is Roberto:]] ..and i suggest - focus placed directly into the tet box once typed "gd" - pb:

Anyone know a way of getting 'Best of Day' type of results from a filter in the beta? I really miss having the BOD on my lists I've made. Will they be bringing it back to lists?
April 16, 2009 - Comments disabled - Share
maybe filter it with big likes and comments count... ;o) say... 50 likes.. - Rob Sellen :o)
I would be interested to know if you could do the exact filtering that they use for the BOD. If not... PLEASE bring it back to lists! - Ronald S
Not possible, but would be great to add. - Kol Tregaskes
Please Friendfeed gods... add 'Best of Day' to lists!!!! - Ronald S
yes ! i am not using the beta just because of that... - David Berrebi
Next thing you know, people will want to be able to write their filters in SQL... - Karl Knechtel
If only we could. Can't query into a pickled BLOB with MySQL, though. (Would save everyone so much trouble if we could.) - Chris Charabaruk
I was being facetious anyway. But still... there's so much potential here, though I feel like only the power users would get much out of it, no matter what. - Karl Knechtel
I just want BOD on lists... I am happy with most everything else. - Ronald S

OK... taking my delicious and digg feeds back out of Friendfeed. I was hoping to use the publishing to Twitter with them, but it only seems to work on FF posts right now.

The new Friendfeed is an AWESOME way to view TwitPic photos. Will be making lots of imaginary friend accounts on there for that filter!

Anyone know a quick way of adding your twitter friends into friendfeed as imaginary friends? This is taking a while. - Ronald S
The main barrier to my using FriendFeed as my main social networking site is that you have to add tweeps as imaginary friends one at a time. Ideally there would be a way to add them all at once, and, even better, an option to tell FF to automatically update our imaginary friend list when we follow/unfollow new Twitter users, and, even better, automatically detect when an imaginary friend starts using FriendFeed and automatically make them a real friend. - Karen James
Yeah... I'm surprised no one has done anything to make this easier yet. I wish I knew more about programming. It would be very useful. - Ronald S
I have one imaginary friend who had one feed (delicious) he signed up for friend feed, added his delicious feed, and it now seems like I'm following him.. but maybe not.. I'm not sure. - Bill Rawlinson
I used to have an imaginary friend, but he blocked me. - Stan Scott
You can add all your "tweeps" (twitter-lingo is starting to drive me mad!) into a single private feed, if you prefer. - Karl Knechtel
I would follow karls advice - Bill Rawlinson
where did it go? imaginary is gone!!!! http://friendfeed.com/setting... - NoahDavidSimon
it's not gone, you just add it as a feed (which is really all it was before), and then make it private. - holly #ravingfangirl
I think it is gone - doesn't work any more for me - Michael

Tagging Feeds: What about the option to Tag feeds so they are easier to find in the FF ecosystem? This would open up the option for subscribing to Tags and thus aggregate across many feeds at once.
So, Tag clouds for quick 'n' easy identification of a feeds contents, would be a nice feature. - zeroinfluencer
i think FFs searchengine does that allready...for every word :) once we have realtime search everythings good :) - Chris Hofmann
Yes, but searching (for example) for Roku yields very different results than searching for #Roku if you were interested in the Netflix/Amazon set-top product - Kevin Kuphal
hm ya ure right. and not always the relevant words are in an article or headline or link. an additional textfield for tags would be sweet (can be tiny :)) - Chris Hofmann
I think there are really two types of tags here: Those that are already part of the incoming feed for each item (ex. blogger has categories, picasa has media:keywords) and overall feed tags that apply to the ALL items and help refine their context. Ex: My Sailing Blog (http://svbillabong.blogspot.com) has tags relating to the country we were sailing in. BUT I would want to add tags like... more... - Chris Myles

disallow edit/delete of comments after few seconds OR after there are comments afterwards..
No way. I want to be able to correct/edit what I write here all the time. Or even to delete it, - Niki Costantini
@Niki - It could be an option at "group" level - Kishore Balakrishnan
I can't see the point of it honestly. - Niki Costantini
it is not ok for me to reply to some post/comment and later the comment gets changed or deleted ! - Kishore Balakrishnan
Live with that. It happens, it's part of interacting with other people on social media. - Niki Costantini
@Niki - This feature is needed to use such "social media tools" effectively for business - Kishore Balakrishnan
Right, but only as an option for groups then, as you said (even thought maybe I would use other serivices for business discussions) - Niki Costantini
why? - pb:
@Petr - "why?" for what statement? - accountability... - Kishore Balakrishnan
@Kish .. sorry .... when I did not indicate to whom, I did mean it to the main post ... - pb:
@Petr - ok. It seems that you have not seen the discussion above... right now, there is no accountability. i could be replying to some post/comment and then the post/comment is changed/deleted. This is not ok for use of ff in business.. - Kishore Balakrishnan
@Petr - friendfeed cannot be used as an employeefeed due to this and some more - Kishore Balakrishnan
@Kishore – what do you think this is, a BUSINESS network? The kind of "comments accountability" you're asking for goes against the grain of basic social interaction. FF is a platform for discussions, not legally-anchored disclosures of arguments. - ianf ⌘
@Ianf - Even in basic social interaction, why should comments/posts be changeable when others have replied based on the _original_ comments. Anyway, am only asking for a feature that can be enabled/disabled at a group level... Why should ff not be used as a business network too ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
Kishore, I'm not sure you are getting what it is that makes FF great, what makes it stand out among other interactive sites: it's precisely that ability to go back to own words, and rephrase them, correct mistakes, add or remove elements no longer of value. Yesterday, I pointed out in passing someone else's typo; he read and corrected it; I removed the pointer while retaining the rest of the conversationn. That's how it is supposed to be done. - ianf ⌘
@Ianf - ff is great. I want to make it greater. Looking at it another way, am asking for "version management" - why not ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
I keep on thinking that FF is not to be used in that way, Kishore. Besides, the concept of "greater" is only a question of personal views. I can see your point as I said above, yet I would use other services for business discussions. - Niki Costantini
No, you are asking for public version management which, btw., is a can of worms. FF apparently – I've no connection to the team – works on the principle of unrestricted ownership for one's words, very unlike that of other services, which will gladly accept your content, but then it effectively belongs to someone else. And now you'd like to restrict it because it doesn't conform to your short-term expectations. - ianf ⌘
@Ianf - Where do you infer "short-term expectations" ? If FF really allows me to unrestricted ownership, a group of us want unrestricted ownership for _our_ words with version management... What is wrong with that? - Kishore Balakrishnan
Well, there's nothing that prevents you from grabbing screenshot, have printouts properly notarized with date, etc., and using them in your legal framework. FF maintains all entries in a high-level database where there is only one copy of everything at any one time (except for temporary undo-buffers during entry). Now you're effectively asking for multiple, time-stamped versions of the same, so that you could review potential changes? I'll tell you what's wrong with that: this is not yet another Wiki. - ianf ⌘
I'm happy with the ability to edit all the time, thank you. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Same htere, Kol. Sometimes I don't realize I made a spelling error until a while after I wrote it. - Molly Song ;)
I realised that as the post author, i can delete the post... which will also hide/delete all the comments! What does the ownership mean here? post author owns the comments !? Anyway, I digress.. - Kishore Balakrishnan
That's correct, as thread owner, you can delete it outright, or delete only selected comments - your own or anyone else's in the queue. You can not, however, edit others's comments. I find that acceptable behavior because, clearly, if it turns out that X routinely deletes comments by Z, then presumably Z will cease to comment on X's words, and X won't have the benefit of Z's counsel. - ianf ⌘
Kishore, correct you own it you can delete it. You cannot edit our comments, just delete, do what you like with the thread. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
I like each comment to be turned into a micro-wiki, with version history. Only the most recent version is shown, but anyone can dig up the previous versions of the comment if they wish. - Meryn Stol
I don't think this wiki-comment necessary, but, for the sake of an argument, how would that "digging up" be conducted on screen? (not achieved underneath the hood - I know it could be done). Perhaps if you could illustrate it with a little demo movie. - ianf ⌘
http://www.gaborcselle.com/blog... - "the traditional MIME-based email structure is replaced by wavelets (an atomic message, with multiple documents inside) and operations (a change delta between versions of a message)." - Kishore Balakrishnan
I understand, Kishore, that you want this functionality, but reheating a conversation after a month, as you've just done, and with an incomprehensible new comment to boot, isn't quite the way to keep it afresh. - ianf ⌘
@ianf - i find the blog post and the section _very_ relevant to this whole conversation and added it... what is wrong with that ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
i am inclined now to agree with Kishore ..stop the editing after 5 minutes /?, or, after first comment ..allow perhaps only delete or add to text. .... and i'd be interested in your comments on http://scrapplet.com and their http://radwebtech.com ...? how does this apply? il post this to Gabor's too - pb:
Kishore, stick to the point, not these "wavelets (an atomic message, with multiple documents inside)" that are supposed to bring about the requested basic change in FF behavior. Observe, there's nothing wrong with the concept of comments becoming uneditable at some point, or providing a timeline of changes, but a blind man can see that it doesn't mesh well with the vision of what FFeeders have built (a system where comments are of clearly subordinate status to original posts, but both are editable). - ianf ⌘
