I want to hide items by the appearance of keywords. Words I want to hide today: Palin, Obama, McCain, Bristol, VP, Politics. But seriously, the ability to filter by keyword AND a simple menu for managing all your hides would be great.

Maybe temporarily blocking people by location would be a good idea too.

I definitely like the hides list idea. It could essentially work exactly the same as Gmail's filter list (giving you the breakdown of all hides)
