It would be great if we could keep "rooms" and "friends" separate. As it is now, joining a high-traffic room makes it hard to spot friends' updates among the room messages.

You already can. Just don't include your rooms' updates on your friends page.

If you go to the room's page, there's a checkbox that controls whether stuff in the room is included in your 'friends' tab. :-)
