friendfeedCommentMiniAvatar script - http://wittman.org/friendf...
friendfeedCommentMiniAvatar
A greasemonkey script (I just released today) that adds a mini avatar to each FriendFeed comment (only tested on beta.friendfeed.com). Feedback please :) - Micah
Cool!! I'll give this a go. - Kol Tregaskes
Awesome, Thanks Kol, and for spreading the word too. - Micah
No worries, hope it works on Chrome. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Thanks, works great. - Willem (@wim66) ☠
this is interesting Micah. I like the idea but the placement is awkward, and the small size makes the avatar hard to identify. I think it'd work well on post pages at an increased size, but not so much in the main feed. - chrisofspades
@Kol, doesn't look like this is chrome-compatible. - chrisofspades
Hmm, Chrome. - Micah
another thought - what if the avatar replaced the comment bubble? - chrisofspades
Thanks for reporting back, Willem. - Micah
chris, I thought of that, but why lose the built in functionality of the bubble when the mini avatar simple causes a bit more text wrapping - that's the only impact on the layout per se. EDIT: And line-height for first line of comment gets opened up a bit. That's true. - Micah
what functionality? displaying the timestamp? you wouldn't have to lose that by adding the avatar there. - chrisofspades
Even at 25x25 px I think the visual cue is enough. Detail is nice, but color and shape do the trick me thinks. - Micah
The bubble is color coded per subscribed or not. I could convey that indication to the mini avatar visually somehow, but I *don't* like the option that immediately comes to mind which is border color. - Micah
oh wow I never realized it was color-coded like that. another option would be to gray out the avatar, but I think that would require some kind of overlay using rgba, unless there's an easier way. that is certainly functionality you wouldn't want to lose. - chrisofspades
chris, the amazing thing is it seems there's always more to discover of FF :) Yeah, overlays, transparency fiddling may be more messy than its worth - good to keep the ideas flowing though. Oh, for even more pronounced indication of subscribed (bubble) status, AJ's Cleaner FF stylish script has covered that for some time http://beta.friendfeed.com/ajbatac... (I still use the old, pre beta one) - Micah
If you still want to replace the bubble w/avatar and want to add some sort of visual indicator as to whether you are subscribed to someone, you could do something similar to what last.fm does for paid member avatars. They add a tiny black square to the upper left of the avatar. Perhaps I wouldn't use black as they did and use blue instead. Take a look at this page of avatars to see what I am talking about: http://www.last.fm/group... - April Russo
April, that's a really interesting effect that's wouldn't be hard to achieve - thanks. *pondering* - Micah
Chris, :-( - Kol Tregaskes
why so sad Kol? no chrome? - chrisofspades
Replying to your post to me above, Chris, i.e. not working in Chrome. I don't think I'd use it but I would certainly like to give it a go. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, why don't you use firefox? - chrisofspades from IM
Nooooo way. Eats resources, and dog slow. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol: how do you feel about k-meleon? It's tons lighter than firefox and a lot more features than chrome. I am looking into a few greasemonkey macro alternatives for k-meleon and if i can get one working, I'll report back. - April Russo
I found a working solution for K-meleon called GreaseMeleon and this version works: [info: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum... ] [download link (most of the ones in that thread are dead links or bad versions): http://kmeleon.110mb.com/extensi... ] I added AJ's theme to the userContent.css file in K-meleon [tutorial here: http://cranialsoup.blogspot.com/2009... ] and got the mini avatars and botom link scripts working with Greasemeleon. Screenshot: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u... After adding the .js files to the main scripts folder, you have to then add them from within K-meleon to activate them. Under tools menu you'll see GreaseMeleon listed. Just click Add Script and select the ones you want to activate. - April Russo
I just noticed something: If I use this mini-avatar script along with the service icon script in K-Meleon, neither will work. And by itself, the service icon script also doesn't work. - April Russo
April, Greasemeleon - that's interesting. The service icon script (it's chrisofspades', though I'm a contributor) still uses a few GM API bits which ties it to Firefox only at the moment, but chris plans to make it compatible I believe. It's a bit tougher than some other scripts because he's using GM persistent storage calls - GM_setValue() and GM_getValue(). However, I found some code that re-implements the functions with standard cookies: http://groups.google.com/group... which may help. - Micah
Some GM API stuff is supported by Greasemeleon. (GM_getValue, GM_setValue, GM_deleteValue,GM_addStyle, GM_xmlhttpRequest,addEventListener) - April Russo
friendfeedCommentMiniAvatar [v0.15] released. No new features, but refactored for significantly better greasekit (Chrome, Safari), Greasemeleon compatibility. http://userscripts.org/scripts... - Micah
