I'm tired the FriendFeed Facebook app. keeps asking me to fix "the problem" so it can post to my wall. I don't want it to post to my wall! Contacts on Facebook and FriendFeed are different types for me. On Facebook it's about being friends in real life, on FriendFeed it is about interests. At least that is how I use FF and FB. My Facebook friends would probably feel I was spamming uninteresting stuff if my FF posts where copied to FB (well, at least if I used FF so intensive as I want to:-))...

Stephen, very happy to see new features like this, but I think the "death" part is the major users reducing their activity. Jesse, fair enough but major users always did come and go. Some of the departees who left said they were doing so because there was no new development. Clearly not all development is halted. Last week Paul hinted that FF may receive a major new feature, and characterized his participation as "20% time" -- I'll take that.

We have received numerous reports of excessive FriendFeed posts showing up in Facebook this evening. While we are not 100% sure, it appears to be an issue on Facebook's end due to ignoring application settings. We have disabled all FriendFeed updates to Facebook until we are sure the problem is resolved.

This is superb. I just showed it to my 5 year old son who enjoys Lego and has already taken some great photos, including one or two of his toys. So now he has the seed of the idea that, in time, he could take multiple stills and put them together to make moving pictures. Michael: it is a nice framework to use for any project in my opinion (though I am clearly biased). If you are doing anything real-time like the chat demo, something like Tornado is certainly necessary/useful regardless of the size of the project.

Look, I'm excited that FF is still being worked on too, but this is arguably a step in the wrong direction. There's reasons why MySpace is going down the toilet, and different themes on every page is one of them. I'm inclined to take that bet, just not at this early point because it's mostly die-hard FF addicts that even know of the feature's existence.

Comparisons to MySpace seem off, since custom themes involve only four possibilities (background image, background color, bar color and box color) -- no widgets, no custom HTML, etc. And first and foremost, they can be switched off. How many times do you visit someone else's page on FF anyway? Most of the time is in your home feed or different lists. I just don't get the negativity, when it's a fun and optional feature that you can opt out from ever seeing again in about two seconds.

Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.

So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

There were some bugs in the "Twitter publishing" code that caused some entries to get published on Twitter when they should not, and others to not get published when they should. Matthew, in general all the same settings that the old ui had are available on the new one (plus a few more), though they are now divided on to several different pages. You should be able to reach all of the the settings by clicking on the word "settings" below your name in the top-right part of the page (the dialog shows a few, and links to all the others).

Yeah, unfortunately the code had gotten rather involved since it was trying to support both the old ui and the new (the old ui worked on a per-service basis instead of letting you decide individually on each entry), and the logic sometimes became inconsistent. I simplified it quite a bit, so there should be less room for bugs now :)

Tony, the "cc twitter by default" option sets whether then checkbox is checked or unchecked by default in the share box and bookmarklet. The other option ("when there's no cc box") applies mostly to the API and other off-site interfaces, such as email (mail share@friendfeed.com) and IM. For any given post, only one setting applies.

Thanks Brian. It turns out there was a bug in the "Share" feature that sometimes caused us to sometimes not send the tweets (the new code errors on the side of not sending tweets). It's fixed now though. Please let me know if you spot any others.

Hello Paul, when I try to publish just my google talk status to twitter and have "Link to source site instead of FriendFeed conversation" selected, it doesn't send the tweet. I'm not sure if this is because twitter seems to be having difficulty right now or if it's the lack of a source link because it's a google talk status?

ehaab, publishing to Twitter was broken this morning, so no updates went out. It should work fine now however, including publishing updates from Google Talk. Sorry about that.

Tina: yes, that is correct. The http://friendfeed.com/friends... page is just a list of people that we think could use some friend recommendations since they have few subscriptions. If you click on any of the "Recommend" links on that page, you will see the same, standard "Recommend friends" dialog.

If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily.

After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages?

Today, Google engineers announced a technology called PubSubHubbub that makes RSS/Atom more real-time, and they deployed the technology on FeedBurner. FriendFeed also added support for the technology, so if you have a FeedBurner feed, your updates should show up in FriendFeed within seconds rather than minutes after the feed updates.

To enable it for your FeedBurner feed: go to Feedburner, click on the "Publicize" tab, and then click on "PingShot" and enable the PingShot service. That will enable PubSubHubbub and send your feed to a number of ping services.

Peter: most blogging platforms ping Feedburner when you post a new entry, Feedburner pulls down the feed, Feedburner then pings the hub, then the hub notifies FriendFeed :)

This tech has been around for ages. It's getting much needed promotion right now, but it's not new. The name comes from XMPP's pubsub mechanism, with hubbub on the end. The option for PingShot has also been in Feedburner for months.

I think that unless you have installed the pubsubhubbub plugin for wordpress, that feedburner still polls your content. It pushes your content out to other interested parties using the new mechanism, but it will still poll your feed. Correct?

This'll make it prettier when I'm using Chrome anyway. :) I think I'll stick with the Stylish scripts and hacks on Firefox, though - I like the typography modifications they provide. When user-generated themes come in, will they be able to modify the typography/spacing, or just the background and colors? Thanks for the options, guys!

When I click your name, Sven, I get the bamboo theme, which is what I chose. If you have chosen a different theme from that, we know it just remembers yours. It seems to work differently from twitter.

Mona, Rob: we tweaked the email signature detection code a bit, and should get rid of the default signatures from iPhone, Blackberry, and WinMo phones, as well as small variations (HI MONA). If you want to ensure that your signature gets dropped, configure the signature to include "-- " (two dashes and a space) on a line by itself before the actual signature text.

"You can only upload 3 audio files every day. Please try again later." Too bad because I was really just trying to see what files worked. .wav aint one of them. No audio notes from Evernote, iPhone, iProRecorder. I soooo want to love this but It's not doing what I need it to do. This feature needs to support some kind of multi photo post with a recording appended to the message. That should be right out of the box. Video needs to come right behind it. Music is cool but citizen journalism is even cooler.

I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred.

Glad for this feature, though perhaps close partnership with Box.net or similar could keep FF storage costs better contained? Not criticizing, just hoping Core Team doesn't get distracted by extending (and babysitting) commodity services. Keep up the great work!

Speaking of copyright etc. I thought it instantly. I already saw copyrighted mp3 files here, and it will be only a matter of time before all kind of questionable stuff will be available here. This means that, if you use a service FeedBurner, your subscriber totals will include FriendFeed subscribers in addition to subscriber counts from Google Reader, Bloglines, etc. For a lot of people like me, this will be a pretty significant boost in your overall subscriber numbers.

There is a problem. My followers on FriendFeed follow all my feeds, not only my blog. So the "attention focus" is different between one user that follows directly my blog via RSS and an user that follows all about me. Two different counts in the main page of FeedBurner, RSS and FF, would be great.

I'm not sure this was the right thing to do. Yes, there are 200 people subscribed to me on friendfeed, and my blog entries fly by in their feed. But from the Google Analytics stats, there are essentially no referrals from friendfeed to actually read the blog posts. Someone who subscribes to the blog RSS feed can be said to have an intent to actually read the blog, A subscriber on friendfeed doesn't necessarily have such an intent.

I think this is a disaster for feedburner. I publish a full feed from my blog so subscribers get the same content they would have if they visited the site. I can lump that into traffic as if they were a site visitor. But friendfeed merely publishes a headline so those friend feed subscribers have a very different experience than the ordinary RSS or email subscribers. In looking at recent traffic, only 10 referrals out of 7,000 came from friendfeed.

I agree - I am not loving this for my feedburner stats, seems not quite right. To me it seems like FF subs are subscribing less to my blog feed and more to me and my general commentary/presence on FF. It seems a little inflationary for rss sub numbers. perhaps is better crawl blog's feed really show in FF. If i go out and my pc in off all the day, my google reader don't read any feed e my ff don't show me any message, Feedburner count me for FF and don't for google reader. And tomorrow, when i turn on my pc, my google reader download all the feed and i can read also the post of the day before, but FF show me only the last message and i lose all of the post.

What's done can not be theoretically undone - so if this is the way it is, it should stay, or our one-time blips will look odd, won't they? DGentry, I don't know if I am in love with it. Louis I think thats the general problem: when someone subscribes to you on ff, are they also a subscriber to you on every one of the services you import? You import thegrayeffect.com as an RSS feed, and you have 9270 subscribers here, therefore thegreyeffect.com has 9270 new readers. More broadly, does a subscriber to the aggregate feed also count as a subscriber to every individual component of that feed? Or is the sum greater than the individual parts?

I actually REALLY dislike this A LOT. My subscriber count was a great measuring stick for me and also a solid indication of how many people -might- actually be reading my content. I just deleted my blog feed from FriendFeed... it's a stupid change really... fake, inflated numbers... it's much easier to get a FriendFeed subscriber than a real RSS subscriber. If someone subscribes to your blog feed using Google Reader, it doesn't mean they read it. Likewise, if someone subscribes to your FriendFeed, they may or may not read your blog posts. Subscriber numbers are all about reach. I see no difference between FriendFeed and Google Reader. Your subscribers see what you're posting and decide whether they want to read it. Tony, you're right about RSS subscribers being able to skip over your posts at will but there's still a disctinction to be made between subscribing directly to a blog feed (traditional) versus subscribing to the totality of a person's shared activity (friendfeed). The former implies an explicit interest in the blog, the latter does not. The big problem for me is that there's no way to verify that you own a blog feed, so (I think) it will inflate your subscribers if it's added to multiple user accounts and groups even without your permission.

I subscribe to blogs of people I know because of who they are (in addition to blogs which interest me) even if I'm not particularly interested in the subject they write about just in case they write something I like. The fact that I know them and like them as a person often means we've got at least one thing in common. And vice versa. I like reading lots of my FriendFeed subscriptions' blogs but I've never subscribed in Google Reader, so FriendFeed is currently the only way they can see me as a statistic.

Gary, first of all you need to be using FeedBurner for your blog feed. Each time FF requests your feed, they include the number of subscribers in the user agent string. FeedBurner then uses that number to include in the stats for your feed. (If you don't use FeedBurner, you'll still be able to see the stats in your web logs each time your feed is requested.)

I'm all for improving the format of notifications, but wonder (aloud) if it is such a smart move to include the Approve/Reject link right at the top (unless it only appears in private feeds to which someone has requested access). Right now we have the option of blocking/ rejecting a subscriber at any time but presumably not at the very outset. This may lead to more of a walled gardens' mentality, already very prevalent at FF.

Gmail automatically showed me the images in a subscription email, even though I never told it to (you know how gmail has the 'display images below' option). further, it doesn't give me the option to hide the images. not that I'd want to, but how are you bypassing gmail's security feature to hide the images?

Chris, we don't do anything special. I'm not sure how gmail decides what images to show, you'd have to contact them or check the gmail help.

Chris, the "show images" only applies to external images hosted on other sites. Gmail doesn't show those by default because doing so would allow people to "bug" email. We include the images with the email so that they can be displayed immediately.

We just launched a "Secret email address" service that makes it possible to post to groups anonymously from any email address. This is a bit of a power-user feature, but it's a very useful for automated posting from scripts, forwarding email (e.g. customer service email), etc.

Here at the office, we use it to forward all of our mercurial changelog emails, server push notifications, etc to a private group. That way, we all see what's going on in real-time (thanks to the notifier: http://friendfeed.com/setting...), and can easily discuss them from the FriendFeed interface. To add a secret email address, click on "Import a service" in the "settings" dialog of any group. For regular posting, you should continue to use the normal email interface though (share@friendfeed.com or groupname@friendfeed.com, see http://friendfeed.com/share... for details). Matthew: No. Your home feed only shows things that you're subscribed to. Of course, if you're a member of a group whose admin allows anonymous posting, and you have that group on your home feed, then the anonymous posts will show up there -- but then, you can always leave the group or remove it from your home feed.

Groups already allow "anonymous" posts -- if you (as an admin) add a service to a group, posts originating from that service will show as belonging to the room, not to any particular user. You can think of anonymous posts (whether imported from RSS services, or posted by email) as being the responsibility of the group admins -- it's their job to police them if they deem necessary.

Tim: the group admins should keep the address secret and only share it with trusted services. If the address gets leaked, then the group can get spammed, in which case the group admins can delete it or change it (which prevents all future mail to the old address from being posted to the group). I just figured out a new use for this feature and it goes in line with Kevin Rose's idea for an Open Source security system. http://www.facebook.com/video... He was talking about having a neighborhood watch like program. Well each neighborhood can have a private room here in FF. If someone tripped an alarm in your house, it would send an email to the secret email for the private group and everyone in the group could be notified via email,IM,SMS,etc.

I'm blonde so maybe need to tell you what I'd like to do and see if it works: I would like to have my ATT mail, my Yahoo mail AND my gmail all feed into a FF room so I could read it all at the same time (ATT and Yahoo are partnered so you can't sign into both at the same time. Both go through Yahoo's sign in page.) Is this possible to create? Having ATT and Yahoo feed into my Gmail through FF would be okay as well, btw. I get FF feeds through GMail already.

Molly, another option (if att offers it - i know yahoo does) is to set up forwarding so the email is automatically forwarded from ATT and Yahoo to your gmail address. Then once in gmail you can use filtering (by the to: field) to separate out the emails

Yesterday was Fixit-Thursday (we usually have Fixit-Friday, but today is Margaritas-Friday, so we rescheduled). You can now hide entries posted from external applications or sites that use our API. For example, you can now hide all entries "from fftogo". Some other recent improvements:
