FriendFeed now 6x more awesomer with themes - FriendFeed Blog
I'm a Blue Wave man myself. - Bret Taylor
Nice, but I think I like the Classic style the best. :) When can designers submit more themes, or users upload their own? - Pistos
That wouldn't have anything to do with Google Wave, now would it? - Daniel Sims
Who would believe that *I* would be using the "Flowers" theme? :) - Ana
Helvetica - Christopher

Helvetica for sure! - Burcu Dogan
This was all due to Kevin's (http://friendfeed.com/kfury) hard work in case it wasn't obvious. Great job, Kevin! - Bret Taylor
Looks like I signed on just in time today. - Yolanda
Thanks guys. Rockin Helvetica for now. Needs the FF logo though. - Andrew Smith
Helvetica for now. - Darryl
This post came when I was thinking how FF logo is a Twitter look-like. Dont change the Helvetica version! - Burcu Dogan
Thanks.. but I'm not a big "theme" guy... I'd rather see updates to the API... I guess I should be hammering Ben for that :) - Tim Hoeck
ohhhhh snap! - Nathan Chase
Niiiiceeeee. - Simon Wicks
I chose Fresh! - David Schmidt
It became clear as soon as the FriendFeed Themes room was taken over. - Andrew Trinh
Awesome! - Frankie Warren

Very nice. Like the Helvetica myself for the moment, but that will probably change in a week or two. - Alex Hellstrom
Helvetica! awesome. BTW, pause button is clipped by a couple of pixels on WebKit browsers. - Kelly Norton
Nice one, though we need more themes... - Kaan Ertürk
+1 to Helvetica! - Joel Webber

"Bamboo" suggests there's a picture, but all I see is brownish colours, at that don't match the friendfeed logo. - Peter
I like "fresh" - Peter
I like Blue Wave. Fresh should be the default theme and the Classic should be dumped. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
MIcah says his scripts still work with the themes btw: http://ff.im/4DlX9 - Kol Tregaskes
OMG LOVE!!! - BEX Happy Long Weekend
Perhaps post your favourite theme and whether you like or dislike the themes in the new *official* FF-Themes group here: http://ff.im/4DluG :-) - Kol Tregaskes

I'm with Gabe: after considering BlueWave, I went with Helvetica, everything else is just girly. I might just stick with my 'stylish' hacks. - Joel Bennett
Yea, flowers and stuff are annoying. Helvetica version should be improved for better spacing. - Burcu Dogan
Thanks, Kol, that's what I was going to ask - if themes conflict with scripts. Sounds like it's cool - heading off to choose one now. I have one stylish userrstyle script and two greasemonkey scripts applied to friendfeed. We'll see if they can all play nice. - Laura Norvig
Laura, how'd it go? - Rochelle
works great - I'm trying helvetica now. It's super clean because I have avatars removed. Me likey. - Laura Norvig
cool... when is that nasty orange "ParisLemon" theme comin? :P - Susan Beebe
This'll make it prettier when I'm using Chrome anyway. :) I think I'll stick with the Stylish scripts and hacks on Firefox, though - I like the typography modifications they provide. When user-generated themes come in, will they be able to modify the typography/spacing, or just the background and colors? Thanks for the options, guys! - Jandy
Thanks Bret. Hel-vet a lot better. - E-Advocate Network
Thanks Bret, I love the Helvetica theme, btw, your new avatar is awesome:))) - K.D.
Helvetica. WIN - Jamie
Tres cool. - Jason Toney

Sorry, but were there no "real" designers to push out some mindblowing themes? It´s just a change of color and background? - Hans Kainz
Helvetica one is awesome! - Yoan
Like those themes. Would be nice though, if they also show up if someone visits my page. Or does it? - Sven
When I click your name, Sven, I get the bamboo theme, which is what I chose. If you have chosen a different theme from that, we know it just remembers yours. It seems to work differently from twitter. - Rick Cogley
It's Helvetica for me! - Rui Pires
I think i'm going bamboo... - diego morelli
Helvetica all the way! I feel like the nytimes.com - Liviu Barbat
@Rick: Thanks. I get the idea. The twitter concept would be nice though. Like personalized version of the FF page. Now, if there were archive links now..... - Sven

Bret Taylor
As a part of our redesign launch, you can post to FriendFeed by emailing share@friendfeed.com, and you can get your feed delivered via email (you can even comment by replying to the messages). See more here: http://friendfeed.com/share...
You can post to a room by emailing <groupname>@friendfeed.com and direct message by emailing <username>@friendfeed.com - Bret Taylor
That's cool. - Andrew Smith
did i just notice the new bookmarklet too? - patrick
brilliant! - Edward Zwart
I assume we need to send the email from the primary email set up on our FF account? - Kevin Whalen
Hehehe... Nice :D - Johnny Worthington
You can add email addresses to your account from your settings: http://friendfeed.com/... - Bret Taylor
You can post from any email address associated with your account. Email notifications will go to your primary address. - Tudor Bosman
Currently, we support automatic posting (without going through an "approve" page) for Gmail, Yahoo, and MSN/Hotmail/Live.com. We will add more email providers in the future, and we will also have a technical document on what an ISP needs to do in order to get added. - Tudor Bosman
I thought a saw a "hello world" yesterday that got deleted rather quickly :) - Frankie Warren
Isn't this a huge spam vector? All I have to know is someone's email address to mail from and I can send stuff to FF? - Brian Sullivan
Brian: we use a number of methods including SPF to verify that emails came from the actual owner of the email address. If we can't verify, we make the entry go through an approval step before it is posted. - Bret Taylor via email
What Bret said; that's why we only support a few email providers right now. - Tudor Bosman via email
You should add more Twitter sharing options, so that I can have emailed-posts automatically tweeted. (like by emailing twitter@friendfeed.com). Then FF can become a replacement for services like twitpic - Daniel Sims
So I could get spammed just by needing to approve posts that didn't come from me? - Brian Sullivan
I don't see any way to turn it off for my account - does such a feature exist? - Brian Sullivan
I just tried to send an email to a private group from a different email account and the request to approve it was sent back to the email address from which I sent the direct message. Is this the intended behavior? - Shakeel Mahate
Shakeel: Yes. In order to approve the post, you have to log in to FriendFeed if you aren't logged in already. - Tudor Bosman
Brian: as Shakeel noted, the approval request will be sent to the email address that was used to post. If someone is trying to spam, they will receive the approval request, not you. In order to approve, though, they would have to log in to FriendFeed, so they can only impersonate you if they know your FriendFeed password. - Tudor Bosman
Wow this is awesome. - Mona Nomura
It is sent to the address that the user claimed does it not ? If they claimed to be me I would get the request? Spam may be an over statement -- but it certainly could be annoying. - Brian Sullivan
Curious if setting the reply to different than the from will have effect on this? registered with yahoo, but yahoo sends out all mail with gmail as reply to... - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Brian, that is correct. We will address this issue if it becomes a real problem; we do have some spam-prevention measures in place. - Tudor Bosman
Rob: you need to associate with your account the address that you send from (that is, the address in the From: header). - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, I think your solution is brilliant, thank you. - Shakeel Mahate
And an IM bot - that would make my work interface a breeze - Nicholas Paul Gordon via Nambu
Nicholas: The IM bot is there. Just set it up and use it :-) I'm getting some notices now....going to test sends in a sec - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Tudor: thanks for the clarification - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nicholas: we have been supporting IM notifications and replies by IM for a while now. Is this not working for you? See http://friendfeed.com/setting... - Tudor Bosman
Tudor: I'm not seeing IM notifications on "comments on posts I commented on" (and maybe same for posts I liked - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: we just added that feature last night, so yeah, it's possible that there are some bugs. Looking into it. - Tudor Bosman
Thanks Tudor. I'll be keeping an eye out for it...I've only got those set (but I did get blasted before I turned off the "Home Feed" notifications - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
pretty cool - Shevonne
If you're not using Gmail, Yahoo, or whatever, do you have to approve each time you post something? - Tom Landini
What happened to the stats page that was with the old interface? - Russ Jackson
this is a gr8 feature.. - Amit
Tom: yes, for now, but stay tuned for improvements. - Tudor Bosman
Thanks Tudor. - Tom Landini
Not seeing IM posts to @me going thru. :( This makes me a sad panda. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Added another mail to stream via cellphone, but confirmation reply never came in, a bug maybe? - Nir Ben Yona
great stuff! i mean ..stuFF .... thanks! ..you are the befft ! .. and will be even beffer .. Im quite sure about that .. LoFFe all the new ffeatures. ! ......... do you think to enable also x@ff.im? it might be handy, save typing - Petr Buben
AND you guys successfully omitted email signatures from DMs and posts! - Mona Nomura
is that new Mona? The last DM I sent via email included my signature. (was a few days ago) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
is there email notifications for groups?? i know you can post to groups via email, but i dont see the way to turn on emails out of groups. - Frankie Warren
So that means no more using the remote key in the email address? That's SWEET. - Jandy
Frankie—Not yet. For now you can add the groups you'd like to receive notifications for to a friend list and enable email notifications for that list. - Dan Hsiao
Dan: Thanks for the work around... I hope a more intuitive method eventually shows up :) - Frankie Warren
Sweet! - TheHenry
Hey everyone reading this on Twitter - come join the party on Friendfeed :) - Phill Price
I leave for a few hours and FF Co. goes and WINs all over the place. Can't leave you alone for a second :) - grant fox
Mona, Rob: we tweaked the email signature detection code a bit, and should get rid of the default signatures from iPhone, Blackberry, and WinMo phones, as well as small variations (HI MONA). If you want to ensure that your signature gets dropped, configure the signature to include "-- " (two dashes and a space) on a line by itself before the actual signature text. - Tudor Bosman
Bret, it looks good, liking the new email and IM features. I've still got a huge suggestions and bug list. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Grant, I went off to watch a rare bit of TV then come back to all this! LOL. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
The notifications rock ! Great work ! - Ahsan Ali
wow, this is very impressive - Peter Efland
I could not post via email, because I guess I never confirmed my email address. I updated my email with the same one and clicked on the link that was subsequently sent to me. Now posts via email work. - Chip Ramsey
Is old interface via mail2ff going anywhere? I'd like to continue authorizing my posts with remotekey. - Alex Kapranoff
Alex: mail2ff will continue to work - Bret Taylor
The mails I send on share@friendfeed.com won't show up. I'm using GMail. Is there a issue? - Ryo
Ryo -- is your gmail address in your ff list of email addresses? - Brian Sullivan
Brian, yes, I added it about an hour ago and made it the primary and only one. - Ryo
Ryo: That may be the same thing that was happening to me. Did you try to add the same email address again? It should fire a confirmation email that provides a link. After I clicked the link, I was then able to send posts via my email. - Chip Ramsey
Chip, it was a new mail address... Will try it again. EDIT: Ahh, now after removing the new address and re-entering it worked. Will test some more. - Ryo
Ryo: BTW, I'm also on gmail and everything works fine now, so gmail itself probably is not the problem. - Chip Ramsey
Nice... I will update my contact list asap! Feature heaven...mmmm - Susan Beebe
Any word on getting other mail addresses to only need authorization once? Have to approve my emails from my cell phone every time is a royal pita!! Pretty please make att.net a single-authorization mail????? Especially since it's an authorized address!! - RudĩϐЯaЯïaȵ
I'm with Rudi. I'm also with ATT.net so will wait for solutions. Molly - Molly via email
So should we replace the old <username>+plaza360demos@mail2ff.com with share@friendfeed.com ? - scott willeke
Bret Taylor

This feature will help with using FF solely as a email mailing list. - Kol Tregaskes
Now we just need page branding and some enterprise integration, and we can replace Sharepoint... - sean andersen
Plus as a mail client too (kinda of anyway). I will have to get auto-forwarding my emails to my ff.com address again. - Kol Tregaskes
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. i'm trying to be coherent but that's all that's coming up. Thanks... whats the file size limit? - Frankie Warren
this has awesomesauce all over it - Alfredo
is video an option? - Zee.
We have a rolling 24-hour limit for the number and size of files you can upload, but you probably shouldn't hit it unless you are sharing really big stuff. - Bret Taylor
Are the files public when accessed via direct link? Or do they require authentication? - Mark Trapp
No video at the moment, Zee. - Ross Miller
Bret, will this work for attachments sent to share@friendfeed.com? - chrisofspades
So tell me, how will you send email verification emails to new users when FF has successfully replaced email? </paradox> - nickrw
nice! - Mike Bracco
So, no BluRay rips, then :p - Josh Haley
Mark: right now they are public when access via direct link (though the links are not at all predictable). - Bret Taylor
Yes, file attachments to share@friendfeed.com work as you would expect. - Bret Taylor
neat-o! - tinym dot com
Bret - is music an option? - Zee.
Any other files that don't work with it? - Kol Tregaskes
What's the file attachment size limit? - imabonehead
Kol: i assume you can attach video? it just won't play in-line? or did i misinterpret that? - Frankie Warren
@imabonehead, from Bret's comment above: "We have a rolling 24-hour limit for the number and size of files you can upload, but you probably shouldn't hit it unless you are sharing really big stuff." - Dan Hsiao
@Dan, thx - imabonehead
Liked Liked Liked (*99999) "You can now share files on FriendFeed" This is.. GREAT! - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Frankie, video attachments aren't currently supported - Dan Hsiao
Frankie, Ross says no to video, see above. - Kol Tregaskes
MP3s? - Kol Tregaskes
Kol: there is a stricter limit on audio files (3 per day). - Bret Taylor
Yay, no more rapidshare! :) - Kaan Ertürk
OK, but any format? - Kol Tregaskes
I tried it with both a txt and a rar file but neither seemed to work (the message was posted without a file attached). [Update: works now for me] - Philipp Lenssen
Gonna give a big W00T!! to this before I even read the whole thing... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
LOL, Tina. - Kol Tregaskes
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!! - Roberto Bonini
Perhaps we need a list of file types (and their limits) that are supported? - Kol Tregaskes
pretty cool! - Bryan Penczak
Tina++, Holy Crap! :) - Rahsheen ™
music files work! awesome! example here http://friendfeed.com/fredyga... - Alfredo
Bret: What about attachments to comments? - sean andersen
Swwwweeeettttt!!! - Jannifer Stoddard
Now all I need is a number where I can call and leave a VM that gets changed into an audio file, and I can get rid of drop.io for good! Yeah, we're never happy are we? Sorry.... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Greatissimo :) - Stanislas Jourdan
Bret, does animated GIFs now work btw? - Kol Tregaskes
Thanks for the clarification on video :) how long will the files stay on the server? - Frankie Warren
Tina - Perhaps if we leave a VM for the FriendFeed IM bot on Google Talk? That would rock. - Mitch
Can we paste URLs into the box like we can for images? - Kol Tregaskes
Seriously, guys, when and where do we start donating? - Akiva Moskovitz
I'd prefer buying private shares, Akiva. :) - Carlos Ayala
I think you can support them by buying the FF swags. - imabonehead
cool - Siavash
and sharing from URLs works! - http://ff.im/4o1RY - chrisofspades
NIIIIIIIIIIICE - Pedram
Pair this w/ a private room and you have instant office and/or project collaboration. Drop.io may have some competition. :) - JA Castillo (جاسون)
JA, agree. - Kol Tregaskes
Chris, cool. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
All we need now is a calendaring system and support for source code. - imabonehead
mp3 sharing works in FriendFeed? Just when I'm thinking to share some 'musiclets' from time to time via Tumblr! mhh.. interesting, really! - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Thierry, yep MP3s are supported. - Kol Tregaskes
this is awesome, i was literally just trying to do this last night on one of our team feeds and had to post links to published google docs instead. going to try it out now. it's like they read my mind. - Mike Elliott
Kol...we use Drop.io all the time here at my office. This would be great as it is supremely simpler. But approved file types and sizes needs to be understood. - JA Castillo (جاسون)
Mitch, that would be an option, but I can only imagine the opportunity for the wrong voice file to go to the wronge feed... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
And Akiva is right...where do we start donating?! - JA Castillo (جاسون)
If we had basic HTML support for first comments on FF, it could almost be used for mail (at least for forwarding and reading mail to and on it). - Kol Tregaskes
JA, a list of supported file types, limits and sizes is needed... please. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Cool stuff - Tyson Key
Any limits on the number of times a file can be downloaded, per day, out of interest? - Tyson Key
Reminds me of Pownce :) Great addition! - Holger Eilhard
NaFFster! :) - jcunwired
Does this mean that the days are numbered for various Pownce clones and Jaiku? Facebook, start your photocopiers! ;) - Tyson Key

search by file type? - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason, good shout. - Kol Tregaskes
Jordan - what is **AA's ?? - Jannifer Stoddard
This will go a long way in convincing some of my Yahoo Groups to move to FF. Although we must have a list of file types supported, retention times and also if there is a max number of d/l's. - Gil Francisco III
This is awesome but I'm also concerned about the type of people this might bring to the FF community. - Johnny Schroepfer
Gil, I'm seriously considering moving my Y!Groups list members from there to FF. - Kol Tregaskes
This is one of those features that people don't complain about even though they didn't ask the community prior to launching ;) - Frankie Warren
Dare I ask about Boobies.jpg.virus.exe? - Oops Casey says they are virus scanned - Richard Walker *popcorn*
Jannifer: RIAA and MPAA, specifically. Say someone shares a copyrighted song or something...RIAA gets cranky. - Jordan Hofker
Am I the only person that thinks this is an incredibly bad idea? - Jason Nunnelley
.m4a files sent from the iPhone's Voice Memos feature aren't given a player but are making it through the mail to FF feature. Any support for a player coming down the line? - Christopher Harley
How about .zip s that are password-protected? Reject I hope... (edit) .zip not supported at all, I gather, good! - Richard Walker *popcorn*
yeah search by filetype absolutely! filetype:pdf, filetype:mp3, filetype:zip, filetype:doc etc. - Nathan Chase
Christoper: (via Bret) "Unfortunately we only can play back MP3s at this point. The iPhone voice memos are in M4A (AAC), so we really want to support them, but it is a bit more difficult with Flash and our media setup at the moment." - Ross Miller
\m/ - metalerik

NICE!!! Been waiting for this... thanks FriendFeed team! - AJ Batac
Cool! FF is becoming more of a platform of choice for me. Thanks guys :) - Dilip Dand
Very Cool !!! - Eric Logan
I'm not sure that I'm going to use that feature (I rarely share docs over the internet that weren't created in Zoho or GDocs, anyway), but still it looks pretty neato. - Miss Elle
Bret, do you have any restrictions to protect against music filesharers etc so you do not become an RIAA target? - Travis Koger
@ Travis: I was just wondering the same. - Brian Chang
Bret Taylor, a friend of mine uploaded 1 mp3 and it disappeared. Now he can't upload any mp3 file, seeing a [The "" file type is not supported]. Broken message? - Jason Nunnelley
"You can only upload 3 audio files every day. Please try again later." Too bad because I was really just trying to see what files worked. .wav aint one of them. No audio notes from Evernote, iPhone, iProRecorder. I soooo want to love this but It's not doing what I need it to do. This feature needs to support some kind of multi photo post with a recording appended to the message. That should be right out of the box. Video needs to come right behind it. Music is cool but citizen journalism is even cooler. - Christopher Harley
seriously useful. - Calvin Ayre
I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred. - James Fuller
Maybe I don't know enough, but doesn't this kind of open the door to slipping malicious code to unsuspecting users? - Fleagle
this is the best thing I know this morning when I open my eyes, well done! - K.D.
that is AWESOME! - Lindsay is :)
Fleagle: It is possible that someone would do that but FriendFeed is fairly well self monitored. It is still a small group of people in comparison to other networks. - James Fuller
Glad for this feature, though perhaps close partnership with Box.net or similar could keep FF storage costs better contained? Not criticizing, just hoping Core Team doesn't get distracted by extending (and babysitting) commodity services. Keep up the great work! - michael silverton
Kudos on the added features! - Eric @ CS Techcast
可以分享文件,friendfeed更好用了。 - 老巫师
哇塞,这个强的。 I like it. - xiawinter
Wow. Just wow. Thanks. - Laura Norvig
NICE! Thanks for the info. - SoMuchMoreThanAMom
Tell us more. Tell us EVERYTHING about the file "FF secret plans.pdf" shown in the blogpost <http://friendfeed-media.com/0fe9b6e...>. - ianf ⌘

It's *machine code*. - Karl Knechtel
Karl: FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- - Chris Charabaruk '_'
So we can setup private groups and share questionable files ? :) - Ahsan Ali
That's pretty much what I was saying, Ahsan. I did one earlier as a test to prove my point, (NOTE: it is a clean file, direct from Revision 3) at http://friendfeed.com/jimminy... - James Fuller
Excellent! Thank you! - Diego Barros
What? No way, this is marvelous! Great. I hope who have enough space on our servers. You'll need it. :) - Ryo
"Rapidshare Fined $34 Million for Copyright Infringement" (http://mashable.com/2009...) - Ozkan Altuner
Speaking of copyright etc. I thought it instantly. I already saw copyrighted mp3 files here, and it will be only a matter of time before all kind of questionable stuff will be available here. How will Friendfeed solve this problem? It's a great function and a major step for FF, but I hope you guys have really thought about it extensively before you made that decision. - Ryo
Ah and on that audio files... Please consider to support .3gp sound files, too. So Android users can upload voice recordings from their phones, too. That would be nice. - Ryo
Hmmm @Ryo, good catch, posting directly from Android to FF your voice messages, would be cool! - Ozkan Altuner
Can we tell the lawyers that they "won" and give them all the money? Then start over with a new set of I.P. laws and a new currency? Pretty please? - Richard Walker *popcorn*
Must you force downloads on HTML files? - ...Vezquex
This is great. I'll try this instead of posting to Ipernity. - Rick Cogley
Seems like a good step in the right direction indeed the concerns are founded based on previous experiences but it is a good start. - Ubuntu101
Is it possible to set it up as part of the feed like a podcast? - Ubuntu101
Excellento - inline playing of mp3 files at last - this will be dangerous. But is there are limit?? - Chris Loft
embedding mp3's is just fine when it works .. I've been trying to get a podcast rss feed I have setup imported for the past 8 hours straight only to find out that each time it's not importing squat. - JohnBfromMemphis via twhirl
I take that back it worked once but everything in the description tags showed up twice. - JohnBfromMemphis via twhirl
:( Apparently not *.pdn files (Paint.Net) - ...Vezquex
Thx! FF continues to rock :) - Krishnamoorthy.K
why the limit on audio files? - tylergillies
Can us folks with Symbian OS-based devices have some Adaptive Multi-Rate codec/AMR file love, too? I believe that some Samsung and NEC phones also use that audio file format... - Tyson Key
Oh, and Google Earth KML files, and Ogg Vorbis files aren't supported right now either, for what it's worth. Still, it's a nice idea, so far. - Tyson Key
wow :) - Mucio
I'm disappointed that the PDF of your secret plans is only 1.2 mb. Surely there's more? - Dnl
anyone know the file size limit? - Julian Seery Gude
thanks for the heads up on this feature - Freemor via IM
To add to the comment made by Tyson Key: That's the same format that Android uses. AMR .3gp. So this format is used by some phones. - Ryo
My old Motorola Que made .3gp files too. Facebook can process them. You want to be at least as cool as Facebook, right? - Daniel J. Pritchett
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! - Micah Wittman
FYI Micah, it works with *.user.js files... you know what that means... - Mitch
*happy dance* this is really innovative and highly useful...thanks FF :) - Susan Beebe
oh heck yes - Shey
Tried to share an .hta file with Micah yesterday....couldn't attach it. Tried to zip it and still couldn't attach it. Ended up tossing it in my dropbox and posting the link. :-( - April Russo

Our data center (SVColo) performed an upgrade to their core network switch this evening. Something went wrong, and the operation took 30 minutes instead of 5. We apologize for the problem.
we are back - K.D.
I wondered. Glad you are back! - Rachel Lea Fox
No problem. Just don't scare us like that again ;) - Mark Krynsky
Ok otherwise it was going to be an topic on Twitter. - Madhav Tripathi
I forgive you. - ...Vezquex
Um, you only have one data center? - Glen Campbell
I thought FriendFeed would have deployed mobile datacenters across the US by now. - imabonehead
Talk to Scoble about getting you guys on Rackspace :) - Jason Cronkhite via Alert Thingy
Jason: we would love to host FriendFeed but any hoster will screw up from time to time so I would rather win their business on the strength of our technology and service. Our CEO puts his personal cell phone out there (I don't know of any other hosting company CEO that does that, plus mine is +1-425-205-1921). not to mention I have some major motivation to make sure FriendFeed stays up. :-) - Robert Scoble
Compete with Wave and let people run their own Friendfeed servers. - ...Vezquex
Thanks! I almost sent SOS via Twitter...but u guys were fast! :D - Roshan
Oh, and it was nice of you guys to arrange your downtime for when I was flying and off the net! :-) - Robert Scoble
The upside is I saw the 'new and improved' twitter web interface for the first time. When do I have time to do that normally :D - Micah Wittman
Micah: New and improved Twitter UI? Either I didn't get that yet, or it has been a *long* time since you were last on Twitter ;-) And welcome back FF peeps - good to see you :-) - Andy Bold
@scoble, that's just it. I've only known Rackspace to screw up once and it was due to some guy driving a car into the data center. Plus, all the other perks you mentioned. - Jason Cronkhite
Andy, long time :) - Micah Wittman
Something changed with this downtime, didn't it? All images are now hosted on friendfeed-media.com instead of the old i.friendfeed.com - Mitch
Mitch, the friendfeed-media change was deployed yesterday and unrelated to the outage. - Paul Buchheit

We started including FriendFeed subscriber counts when we crawl your blog's feed - http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009...
We started including FriendFeed subscriber counts when we crawl your blog's feed
This means that, if you use a service FeedBurner, your subscriber totals will include FriendFeed subscribers in addition to subscriber counts from Google Reader, Bloglines, etc. For a lot of people like me, this will be a pretty significant boost in your overall subscriber numbers. - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
This is great! Thanks! - Stephen Mack
Not sure why it is called "friendfeedagg" right now :) We will ask them to make the name a bit friendlier, but the stats are there nonetheless. - Bret Taylor
What service did Kevin use to make that pie chart in the example? - Stephen Mack
Thanks again to the FeedBurner team for working with us on this one - they were incredibly responsive and great to work with. - Bret Taylor
Stephen: the chart comes from FeedBurner ( http://feedburner.google.com/fb...) - Bret Taylor via email
Very interesting ! - Farzad
Great! - little Angel
You can add your blog to your FriendFeed profile (if it isn't already there) at http://friendfeed.com/setting... - Bret Taylor
not sure if i like it... - Zio Bonino
There is a problem. My followers on FriendFeed follow all my feeds, not only my blog. So the "attention focus" is different between one user that follows directly my blog via RSS and an user that follows all about me. Two different counts in the main page of FeedBurner, RSS and FF, would be great. - Alessandro Di Nicola
and for the reach stats? it's crawled? - Felter Roberto
I'm not sure this was the right thing to do. Yes, there are 200 people subscribed to me on friendfeed, and my blog entries fly by in their feed. But from the Google Analytics stats, there are essentially no referrals from friendfeed to actually read the blog posts. Someone who subscribes to the blog RSS feed can be said to have an intent to actually read the blog, A subscriber on friendfeed doesn't necessarily have such an intent. - DGentry
Unfortunately I suspect we'll see a TechCrunch article soon about "How To Inflate Your Subscriber Numbers Using friendfeed.com!" Edit: like the one they wrote about netvibes http://www.techcrunch.com/2008... - DGentry
I agree with DGentry and Alessandro, this may not be a good idea. The problem could occur when Twitter and Facebook start reporting subscribers in the same way. This could start a very bad trend. - Rob Diana
Hmm, I'm not sure if I like that. It surely inflates the subscriber-stats for the Feedburner-Feeds. - Marcel Weiß
I think this is a disaster for feedburner. I publish a full feed from my blog so subscribers get the same content they would have if they visited the site. I can lump that into traffic as if they were a site visitor. But friendfeed merely publishes a headline so those friend feed subscribers have a very different experience than the ordinary RSS or email subscribers. In looking at recent traffic, only 10 referrals out of 7,000 came from friendfeed. - Doug Cornelius
I agree - I am not loving this for my feedburner stats, seems not quite right. To me it seems like FF subs are subscribing less to my blog feed and more to me and my general commentary/presence on FF. It seems a little inflationary for rss sub numbers. I prefer to keep them separate, rss subs and ff subs. - felix
but feedburner shown who "WANT" read our feed o who CAN read it? i think the second. And now it's the same. :) - Felter Roberto
I'm awaiting Louis Gray's opinion. I think he had 8,500 RSS subscribers before, and now has 13,814. Which is the more accurate representation of the number of regular readers of louisgray.com ? - DGentry
perhaps is better crawl blog's feed really show in FF. If i go out and my pc in off all the day, my google reader don't read any feed e my ff don't show me any message, Feedburner count me for FF and don't for google reader. And tomorrow, when i turn on my pc, my google reader download all the feed and i can read also the post of the day before, but FF show me only the last message and i lose all of the post. - Felter Roberto
Whoa, awesome!! FriendFeed rocks! :) My new blog at http://susanbeebe.com now has a huge potential for additional subscribers due to this great new feature FF just added, THANK YOU! :) - Susan Beebe
Wow my subscribers just jumped up 3000% - Ralph Whitbeck
What's done can not be theoretically undone - so if this is the way it is, it should stay, or our one-time blips will look odd, won't they? DGentry, I don't know if I am in love with it. I think Rob is right in terms of it rendering the number meaningless. I've been excited to see my numbers go from 5,000 to 8,000 naturally (I guess) in the last two months. This means I can't celebrate that jump. - Louis Gray
Doug said: "But friendfeed merely publishes a headline so those friend feed subscribers have a very different experience than the ordinary RSS or email subscribers." A lot of people use Google Reader in list view, which is *almost* the same thing as just seeing a title. There's no way to differentiate between those subscribers and ones which see the full content. Or subscribers that choose to mark all your items as read or just ignore them without even looking at the titles. - Tony Ruscoe
For Louis, I guess the saving grace here is that you can see the breakdown in FeedBurner and choose to ignore FriendFeed if you wish. That means you can still watch your "normal" subscriber numbers climb and celebrate hitting 8,000 subscribers naturally. (You just can't share that number in a chicklet...) - Tony Ruscoe
Tony: agreed these issues already exist for RSS subscription counts, and for web based readers such as gReader users could be counted even if completely inactive - Mike Chelen
If someone subscribes to me on FriendFeed but also subscribes via other means - are those deduped or do they essentially get counted twice? - AJ Kohn
AJ, I assume yes. - Louis Gray
They get double counted, naturally. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
What if more than one user has the same feed, like Philipp and I do for the Google Blogoscoped blog feed? Does that add together both of our subscriber totals? And does it include all the subscribers for all the groups where it's been added too? (Cross-posted from http://ff.im/47QNJ.) - Tony Ruscoe
One clear flaw of this is that my wife's blog at http://www.thegrayeffect.com, says it now has more than 9,300 readers, up from 50 yesterday. That's clearly wrong. - Louis Gray
This is very bad! Of course I'd like higher numbers of RSS subscribers but this is a fake number. Please consider this again... - Marko Saric
Louis I think thats the general problem: when someone subscribes to you on ff, are they also a subscriber to you on every one of the services you import? You import thegrayeffect.com as an RSS feed, and you have 9270 subscribers here, therefore thegreyeffect.com has 9270 new readers. More broadly, does a subscriber to the aggregate feed also count as a subscriber to every individual component of that feed? Or is the sum greater than the individual parts? - DGentry
I saw a huge jump in subscribers today. I thought that Feedburner was broken. This explains it. - Gary
Tony and Louis, the multi-author blog is one of those feeds that causes problems. I did not like this to start, and I am beginning to think I like it even less. - Rob Diana
I hope Twitter and others don't get the same idea... - Marko Saric
Hummm. As much as I like the idea, it seems destined to provide incentive for people to beg for subscribers here on FriendFeed which is exactly the behavior that I seek to avoid, and has been generally devoid on FriendFeed to date. It rewards FriendFeed usage and - as such - helps FriendFeed grow but ... is it the *right* growth? - AJ Kohn
OK. Now I understood why my Feedburner count was inflated. I think, this is not a right thing to do. - Krishnamoorthy.K
I actually REALLY dislike this A LOT. My subscriber count was a great measuring stick for me and also a solid indication of how many people -might- actually be reading my content. The vast majority of my subscribers here aren't reading my blog. It's very misleading and makes the RSS subscriber count a lot more meaningless to me. - Ryan Stephens
Rob, one of the oddities here is that FriendFeed shows more than 9,000 adds to TheGrayEffect, but only about 5,000 to louisgray.com. That may be due to deduplication, but it is certainly odd. - Louis Gray
howtomakemyblog: Twitter and Friendfeed are in this regard completely different services and I therefor don't see any way in which Twitter could do something like this. But Jaiku might do it. - Horst Gutmann via IM
I'm wondering, though: are people who hide the blog feed substracted from the number of subscribers? - Horst Gutmann via IM
The easy fix is to disconnect my blog feed from FriendFeed. Otherwise the subscriber numbers are useless. --- So I did. That seems like a bad result for FriendFeed. - Doug Cornelius
Wow Doug, you chose Feedburner stat purity over FF conversations? That's pretty surprising to me. I suppose you can always tweet your posts into FF if you really want 'em to show up. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
I just deleted my blog feed from FriendFeed... it's a stupid change really... fake, inflated numbers... it's much easier to get a FriendFeed subscriber than a real RSS subscriber. And also a real RSS subscriber is much more likely to take a look at your article than a FriendFeed one.... spammers that want to boost their RSS subscriber numbers will love this though! - Marko Saric
I can't help but notice that Marko and Doug have 350ish FF comments each. I suppose that shades your perception of this change in a different way than it might for someone who - like me - has orders of magnitude more FF comments than blog posts. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, the fact that they have a smaller comment count should be concerning to FriendFeed because those are the users they need to keep. People like myself and more active users are not going anywhere. - Rob Diana
HAHAH - now i see what happened - i don't use my feedburner feed here for CN - but for my other sites I do - so now I see I got about 2,000-2,500 bump for those feeds today - yea, like 2,500 people coming to insidetransit every day - i wish! as Rob says, these numbers are meaningless and shouldn't be reported this way. just like the other "defaults" on some of the other services like google reader. mystery solved. - Allen Stern
Oh yeah I'm not saying FF should keep the feature as is - it's misleading at best - just that I was surprised that anyone values their Feedburner count over their FF stream's purity. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
So who's really at fault here? FF for taking advantage of Feedburner's poor implementation of subscriber counts or Feedburner for offering the possibility? - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
Do you think FriendFeed had any idea there would be this many people talking about it? - Rob Diana
So is it better to turn it off altogether or to make it a toggleable feature that users can choose to use or abuse at their discretion? - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
@Rob - Who knows what FF expected, but it's really cool to see discussion evolving around this in a live FF thread. People are being mostly civil and constructive and it's all happening right here on the FF thread. I guarantee you FF HQ is reading this and staying hands off for a few hours until they can figure out a solid response. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
Instead of deleting your blog feed from FriendFeed, you could just provide FriendFeed with your actual feed URL instead of the FeedBurner one. (I don't think the feed URL actually gets published anywhere by FriendFeed, does it?) - Tony Ruscoe
daniel - you cant do that - then x blog says "we have y subs" while z blog says "we have a subs" and x gets the ad deal because they have more subs, etc. sadly advertisers and agencies still don't get that the number is meaningless. - Allen Stern
@Allen - Most of us here aren't directly making money off of subscriber counts, but I appreciate that this would be an issue of great importance to you. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel: No matter how active you are on FriendFeed, if you think a FriendFeed subscriber is just as valuable to your blog as your RSS subscriber, you are fooling yourself. And I am talking about value to your blog as that is what RSS subscriber number represents, not about relationships / conversations etc. you might have wit hyour "subscriber" on FriendFeed... - Marko Saric
I think my Friendfeed network is more valuable to me than my blog's readership, but I still keep the blog around for the few unique things it can offer me: A well-developed body of work to point to in professional situations, google juice, and a place to share long-form ideas. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
So if I could get Robert Scoble, Jason Calacanis and Leo Laporte to add my post-every-six months blog to their feeds, does that mean Feedburner would show I have 100K subscribers? - Ken Sheppardson
This will definitely be abused by spammers who will use it as an opportunity to inflate their RSS numbers and make their blogs seem more important to potential advertisers, readers, subscribers etc who are unaware of this FriendFeed change. - Marko Saric
Jason Calacanis To Pay Friendfeed $200,000 For Spot on Suggested Users List - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
+1 Daniel - Allen Stern
There's no reason Twitter couldn't turn around and do the same thing, right? Heck, they could set up a service to automatically tweet your RSS feed over to Twitter on your behalf, then just add the number of Twitter subscribers you have to their stats. I think this is more a Feedburner fail than a FriendFeed issue. - Ken Sheppardson
Seems like maybe somebody took all the "Have you ditched Google Reader for FriendFeed" threads the wrong way... hm. - Ken Sheppardson
What about making this optional per feed? - Horst Gutmann via IM
Ken, right now Twitter doesn't request any feeds though. Those numbers get into FeedBurner by FriendFeed providing a subscriber count in the USER_AGENT header when they request the feed. - Tony Ruscoe
It seems logical to me that you're counting people and not tools. - Glen Campbell
I'm surprised Feedburner agreed to this. Next Twitter will ask that followers on their service count as readership. - Aviv
Aviv - that presumes that FF and FB had a discussion about this. It reads to me like FB always allowed polling agents to specify a subscriber count via their API and that the FF team just decided to change the way they utilize that feature. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
If someone subscribes to your blog feed using Google Reader, it doesn't mean they read it. Likewise, if someone subscribes to your FriendFeed, they may or may not read your blog posts. Subscriber numbers are all about reach. I see no difference between FriendFeed and Google Reader. Your subscribers see what you're posting and decide whether they want to read it. Using web analytics... more... - Tony Ruscoe
tony +1 - Horst Gutmann via IM
Tony, you're right about RSS subscribers being able to skip over your posts at will but there's still a disctinction to be made between subscribing directly to a blog feed (traditional) versus subscribing to the totality of a person's shared activity (friendfeed). The former implies an explicit interest in the blog, the latter does not. Moreover FF makes it trivial for a user to subscribe to a person and then perma-hide their blog posts if for example you like talking to Louis Gray but not about his blog. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
Tony, you have to agree that subscribing on Google Reader means at the very least that right now, at the time of adding that subscription, you have the intention of reading future blog posts. But with FF, I don't think I'm even aware of blogs maintained by 90% of the people I'm subscribed to. - Aviv
VERY cool. - Shey
Daniel, Aviv, good points. But I think that by subscribing to a person, you're generally interested in them and what they have to say. Blogs are merely a subset of that person. The big problem for me is that there's no way to verify that you own a blog feed, so (I think) it will inflate your subscribers if it's added to multiple user accounts and groups even without your permission. - Tony Ruscoe
To put it another way, should anyone in your field care that your mom reads your blog? We all know she's just doing it because she loves you, not because your blog is so gosh darned wonderful. FF subscribers in FB stats are the same thing - people like *you* and while that might carry over to a limited interest in your blog it certainly doesn't imply that many of them have ever read it. - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
I subscribe to blogs of people I know because of who they are (in addition to blogs which interest me) even if I'm not particularly interested in the subject they write about just in case they write something I like. The fact that I know them and like them as a person often means we've got at least one thing in common. And vice versa. I like reading lots of my FriendFeed subscriptions' blogs but I've never subscribed in Google Reader, so FriendFeed is currently the only way they can see me as a statistic. - Tony Ruscoe
Fb must count only the number of post link shown on FF, exactly how count how much feed google reader download from the blog. it's different that to use the contact number at all. it's possible? i don't know - Felter Roberto via twhirl
Innovative. I don't use FeedBurner on my blog, so not seeing the effect. Still relying on the Google Reader count of subscribers. - Hutch Carpenter
Yet another great reason for a blogger to invest time in the friendfeed community! - .Garin Kilpatrick.
So ... if I convince other people to use my blog as one of their fed items, then I pick up the amount of people who are subscribed to them as well? Or create a new account and put a few different blogs on it and get people to subscribe. Or 'trade' a feed for a feed with others to boost each other's counts? The more I think about this, the more I dislike it. - AJ Kohn
Hmm nice. Just jumped from about 5 to 148 with tobiasverhoog.com I do think though that friendfeeders may read my feed differently than subscribers via Google Reader or another feedreader. - TobiasVerhoog.com
Uh, maybe it's because I have not had my coffee but where do I see this shiny chart? Friendfeed? Feedburner? - Rick Cogley
Rick: you can see it in FeedBurner - Bret Taylor via email
Bret: thanks. Yes indeed it's there. :-) - Rick Cogley
and another thing to add onto what Daniel has been saying: hides. if I have 10 FF subscribers but 3 of them are hiding my blog entries, does it report the subscriber to Feedburner as 10, or 7? if it's the former, then the Feedburner stats become really inflated. - chrisofspades
also, there's nothing in FriendFeed that stops me from importing someone else's blog, which means I can artificially inflate their Feedburner stats without them even knowing I did it. seems ripe for gaming, to me. - chrisofspades
Right, Chris. As I have 9,000 potential to add to you, I'll start selling slots for $9k. - Louis Gray
as enticing as that is Louis, I don't have a blog ;) - chrisofspades
how does it know to link it to your feedburner? - Gary
Gary, first of all you need to be using FeedBurner for your blog feed. Each time FF requests your feed, they include the number of subscribers in the user agent string. FeedBurner then uses that number to include in the stats for your feed. (If you don't use FeedBurner, you'll still be able to see the stats in your web logs each time your feed is requested.) - Tony Ruscoe via fftogo
If people are being exposed to my blog headlines, no matter if it’s on an RSS reader or FriendFeed, they should be counted as potential audience. At the end of the day, the much more important metric to measure is the actual visits to your blog and how often they visit afer that. I've posted some thoughts about it here http://bit.ly/N0jQc - Jorge "JungleG" Escobar
So that's what happened.... - Spot us
Casey Muller
This morning we changed the format of FriendFeed subscription email messages to include more information about people who subscribe to you. Please let us know if you see any problems, and keep an eye out for more email improvements in the future.

Awesome! Now lets see support for more web services... - Jac Falcon
saw that, and it was mega-helpful. bravo. - Nathan Chase
Shoot. Now I need a subscription. - Josh Haley
I'm all for improving the format of notifications, but wonder (aloud) if it is such a smart move to include the Approve/Reject link right at the top (unless it only appears in private feeds to which someone has requested access). Right now we have the option of blocking/ rejecting a subscriber at any time but presumably not at the very outset. This may lead to more of a walled gardens' mentality, already very prevalent at FF. - ianf ⌘
ianf: approve/reject is only for private feeds. Public feeds just have a link to subscribe back :) - Benjamin Golub
Nice - Grant Bierman
that's great! - K.D.
LIKEY. - Steven Perez
I noticed this one! Such informations about people who subscribe to me on FriendFeed are useful, and makes it easy to quickly get in the conversation. Thanks for the good job! - Thierry R. Andriamirado

For features like this one, I'm ok to receive html emails. -MANY- html emails ;-) - Thierry R. Andriamirado

Gmail automatically showed me the images in a subscription email, even though I never told it to (you know how gmail has the 'display images below' option). further, it doesn't give me the option to hide the images. not that I'd want to, but how are you bypassing gmail's security feature to hide the images? - chrisofspades
Chris, we don't do anything special. I'm not sure how gmail decides what images to show, you'd have to contact them or check the gmail help. - Casey Muller
Casey, you sure FriendFeed's founders didn't use some of their "we created Gmail" mojo? ;) - chrisofspades
Chris, the "show images" only applies to external images hosted on other sites. Gmail doesn't show those by default because doing so would allow people to "bug" email. We include the images with the email so that they can be displayed immediately. - Paul Buchheit
ahhhh that explains it. thanks Paul. - chrisofspades via email
Paul Buchheit
We just launched a "Secret email address" service that makes it possible to post to groups anonymously from any email address. This is a bit of a power-user feature, but it's a very useful for automated posting from scripts, forwarding email (e.g. customer service email), etc.
Picture 85.png
Show all
Here at the office, we use it to forward all of our mercurial changelog emails, server push notifications, etc to a private group. That way, we all see what's going on in real-time (thanks to the notifier: http://friendfeed.com/setting...), and can easily discuss them from the FriendFeed interface. To add a secret email address, click on "Import a service" in the "settings" dialog of any group. For regular posting, you should continue to use the normal email interface though (share@friendfeed.com or groupname@friendfeed.com, see http://friendfeed.com/share... for details). Thanks to Tudor for writing and launching this! - Paul Buchheit
Shhh! This is very sekret! - Andrew Trinh
Interesting. My secret FriendFeed toy. - phil baumann
I'm in my Private Group, but for the life of me I cannot find this option. Wouldn't it be under Edit Settings? - Nick in Manila
Ah. NOW I see it. - Nick in Manila
I am loving this feature idea... Very savvy for business use. Thanks! - Susan Beebe
This won't be happening in the main feed will it? Anonymous posting destroys services. - Matthew DeVries
Matthew: No. Your home feed only shows things that you're subscribed to. Of course, if you're a member of a group whose admin allows anonymous posting, and you have that group on your home feed, then the anonymous posts will show up there -- but then, you can always leave the group or remove it from your home feed. - Tudor Bosman
oh this is genius. there's so many use cases that can leverage this. platform +1 - Sameer
Groups already allow "anonymous" posts -- if you (as an admin) add a service to a group, posts originating from that service will show as belonging to the room, not to any particular user. You can think of anonymous posts (whether imported from RSS services, or posted by email) as being the responsibility of the group admins -- it's their job to police them if they deem necessary. - Tudor Bosman
I see this working for the Confessions room. What else? - Josh Haley
Sounds like the email can be sent from any arbitrary email address, not necessarily one registered with FriendFeed for an account? So the secret really needs to be kept secret to valid potential posters only. - Logical Extremes
Logical Extremes: Yes, that is the point; it doesn't matter what address you send *from*. Sometimes you can't control the address that mail gets sent from. A few examples: your datacenter can notify you by email of any problems affecting your servers, but you'd prefer these notifications to go to a FriendFeed group. You are subscribed to a low-volume distribution list, but you'd rather... more... - Tudor Bosman
Paul has explained how we use this feature internally at FriendFeed. If one of us checks in a change (we use Mercurial for source control), Mercurial sends an email to a secret email address for a private group (that all FF engineers are subscribed to); the others see the change immediately, and we can discuss it in comments. - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, how would you respond to said email if it is forwarded to the group... - ld
Cool! Very useful for room owners. If you don't have instructions, it's very hard to find. "Sekret" - AJ Batac
LD: I don't understand. To which of my examples are you referring? - Tudor Bosman
Oh yeah. Laughing uncontrollably. WOW. - Webferret
It sounds like a pro-spam feature. Have you thought through all the consequences? - Tim Tyler
Tim: the group admins should keep the address secret and only share it with trusted services. If the address gets leaked, then the group can get spammed, in which case the group admins can delete it or change it (which prevents all future mail to the old address from being posted to the group). We believe it to be reasonably secure, but please let us know if you notice any problems. - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, what is that group, so we can get the engineers working on putting the service icons and service sorting back without having to hack the service with scripts? - Matthew DeVries
Matthew: :) - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, you said: "posts originating from that service will show as belonging to the room, not to any particular user". But the posts /do/ show up as belonging to the admin user in a _search result_. - Ahsan Ali
Ahsan, that's a bug that already existed with how searches handle imported content in groups (not specific to this release and already on our list, thanks). - Dan Hsiao
Tudor, I'm talking about the forwarding customer emails use case. If you forward the email in. I presume it's captured and I can't think of a way to reply to the customer. The discussion idea is cool tho... - ld
LD: You're right, you can't reply from within FriendFeed. You could have the contact form send email to both the internal group and a regular email address, which you can then use to send a reply. - Tudor Bosman
That's what I thought... So you might want to characterize that use case as a cc instead of a forward.... - ld
Tudor: btw. regarding mercurial, what's your experience using mercurial in friendfeed vs perforce in google? - Amund Tveit
Tudor - what I really like is the business use cases you're laying out here, including your own internal engineering ones. Good stuff, as my e2.0 buddy Sameer above says. - Hutch Carpenter
using this feature to post blog uptime statistics for several blog to blog owners - Jeroen De Miranda
Its a good feeling when you know that the people behind a certain product know what there doing. Dont we FF Team? - Webferret
Use case? How can one use the best readily filtering system available (Gmail filters) with best of breed group collaboration (Friendfeed). This is GOING to become the best in its class. I can drop so many business tools(that i pay for) for just FF Private rooms - Webferret
Already is Webferret, already is... - Chris Heath
sweet - D Lets
Turn Gmail Into Your Personal Nerve Center http://www.micropersuasion.com/2007... - Webferret
Amund: Mercurial works. We use it in a mostly-centralized setup (one central repo that we sync to very often). Can't really compare performance -- our repositories are tiny compared to Google's. We can take this offline if you'd like to discuss this in more detail. - Tudor Bosman
That's a great add-on. Slowly, FF is going to be our "life center" - Ozkan Altuner
So this is kinda like when you posted the "advert"? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kol: not quite; the "shameless self-promotion" showed up as an entry in your home feed, without any user (or group) name attached to it. Entries imported into a room (via RSS or via email) show up as being in that room. - Tudor Bosman
OK, Tudor. I'll give it a test later. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
This is a cool idea, but it only seems to import the mail subject title only. Is that right, if so, how do we get the content of the mail in, or is it not meant to do that? - Keith Bennett via BuddyFeed
Keith: it works for me. The subject goes in the main post (FF thread title?) and the message appears as a comment to the thread. Maybe you are sending an HTML e-mail? - alieb
Cheers alieb, I just tested it by forwarding the first mail in my inbox and that didn't show anything up. Creating a mail and adding some text to the mail body works correctly. Thanks for the help. - Keith Bennett
I just figured out a new use for this feature and it goes in line with Kevin Rose's idea for an Open Source security system. http://www.facebook.com/video... He was talking about having a neighborhood watch like program. Well each neighborhood can have a private room here in FF. If someone tripped an alarm in your house, it would send an email to the secret email for the private group and everyone in the group could be notified via email,IM,SMS,etc. - Bryan Lee
I think this secret address should be reminded somewhere in each group settings window. - Zackatoustra
@Bryan Lee. shhhh lol - Webferret
Zacaktoustra: group admins will see the address in the "services" window (click "add/edit" under Services in the settings dialog). Other group members will only see the words "secret email address", as, well, the address is supposed to be secret and only visible to admins. - Tudor Bosman
could we have this for home feeds as well? some 3rd party messaging services will send from various addresses. great feature, thanks! - Mike Chelen
I'm blonde so maybe need to tell you what I'd like to do and see if it works: I would like to have my ATT mail, my Yahoo mail AND my gmail all feed into a FF room so I could read it all at the same time (ATT and Yahoo are partnered so you can't sign into both at the same time. Both go through Yahoo's sign in page.) Is this possible to create? Having ATT and Yahoo feed into my Gmail through FF would be okay as well, btw. I get FF feeds through GMail already. - Molly
Molly, what you're asking for is totally unrelated to this thread. If i was you I would set up gmail to receive the mail from your other email addresses. It's a bit complicated but can be done. Try reading this lifehacker gmail article first: http://lifehacker.com/374610... - Chris Heath
Well said Heath - Daniel J. Pritchett via IM
Heath, thanks. I told you I'm blonde. :-P I tried your suggestion already and so far haven't been able to hook ATT and Yahoo to my Gmail (both being POP accounts) w/o paying extra. Will work on it again later. It's not THAT much trouble to check all three accounts from different sources. - Molly via email
Molly, another option (if att offers it - i know yahoo does) is to set up forwarding so the email is automatically forwarded from ATT and Yahoo to your gmail address. Then once in gmail you can use filtering (by the to: field) to separate out the emails - Chris Heath
I think that's the paid service from Yahoo. At least it was when I investigated it a few months ago. Thanks for thinking about it for me, though. Us techblondes need all the help we can get re: setting stuff up. I'm kind of on hold right now anyway (trying to recover my domain name and identity....... long story and boring to all but me). Molly - Molly via email
Wow! This is awesome! Thanks. - Svartling

FriendFeed Blog: Popular iPhone apps for FriendFeed
FriendFeed Blog: Popular iPhone apps for FriendFeed
FriendFeed Blog: Popular iPhone apps for FriendFeed
"Some third party software developers have made good use of the FriendFeed API to create some great FriendFeed iPhone applications. Stay connected to FriendFeed even when you're away from your computer with one of these iPhone apps (at our office, BuddyFeed and Amigo have been really popular)" - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
Both paid apps - think I'll wait until after iPhone 3.0 drops before I try them. - Mitch Wagner
BuddyFeed is solid, but sorely lacking a landscape browser option. And it's still a touch crashy. - Roger Benningfield
I've been using Amigo, and like it alot. The developer also has more updates coming in the next version. - Kevin Whalen
Gosh, I wish there were popular FriendFeed apps for the Sprint Instinct. -from the mobile wilderness. - Anika Malone
I think the browser would be perfect if you could lock the horizontal scrolling somehow. - Frankie Warren
I wish there was a mention of the two alternative WebApp-proxy apps, which are fully usable on most smartphones, not solely the iPhone. One of them is f2p <http://dev.ctor.org/f2p/>, developed by Nakamura Hiroshi <http://friendfeed.com/nahi>; the other <http://fftogo.com/login/> by FFeeder Benjamin Golub. - ianf ⌘
I have been liking Nambu, still in beta and free http://itunes.apple.com/WebObje... - Drew S
I broke down and bought BuddyFeed about a week ago. It has helped me use FriendFeed more but there are features it's lacking (specifically Twitter sharing integration). solid app overall though. - Michael Koby via BuddyFeed
Still looking for the perfect Tri-fecta app: Friendfeed / FaceBook / Twitter "hub". Nambu and Zensify are close on the iPhone, but both are 1/3 short. - eEditor via Nambu
I use Nambu on my iPhone and for Twitter on my Mac and like them both. The Mac version is currently without FriendFeed and Facebook, but both are promised 'soon', like end of June/July when it comes out of beta. - Ken Gidley
BuddyFeed and amigo aren't bad, but they both need serious work on their respective UIs (particularly as it relates to liking and commenting, both of which require about 2 too many taps). I'm excited to see what happens with these in the future. And now I'm actually thinking about building one myself. We'll see. - Brett Kelly
I made some FriendFeed tables for YQL that make it really, really easy to use: http://bit.ly/TzF2n - Sam Pullara
How about Android? C'mon developers! Android will be on more devices in the future, including netbooks! - Mike VanLare (slayerboy)
These apps all seem to lack some obvious basics, like being able to email a FF item. I own BuddyFeed (and a couple others) and generally like it, but I still bounce to the web app sometimes. - David Chartier
Dear devs, you know that you lose the market of the future if you don't support Android. - Ryo
Use Nambu (FREE), or Safari :) - Alp
Great thread - thanks for the pointers everyone. - Mitch Wagner
Is there anything interesting out there for BlackBerry? - Pablo Melchor
Using Nambu myself-primarily to post to FF and Ping.fm--really great picture integration which the FF/iphone page lacks. It can still hang up a bit--but no complaints since it's free. - Kelly W.
Thanks, Susan: I tried fftogo.com and it does the trick, buy it is a pity that it has not added the improvements in friendfeed's appearance (e.g. fftogo still displays service icons -twitter, facebook- beside each entry instead of people's pictures) - Pablo Melchor
All of them offer less functionality than the website, which is perfect. Therefore, all of them suck. - Zio Bonino
I hope a good client is developed for Palm Pre soon (which, on WebOS should reach full website functionality). fftogo works, but I prefer the full web interface. - jcunwired
The website is far from perfect. Posting picture is less than ideal. - Kelly W.
BuddyFeed is my favorite one out of that batch. However, it crashes way too much - Susan Beebe
With respect, the API has several big missing pieces, for example DM, IM, and Email. That's why those features aren't in these apps. - David J. Hinson
If you cannot decide which client to use, ask Hunch: http://www.hunch.com/friendf... - Lars Trieloff
I second the call for an Android app. - Alex
Paul Buchheit
Yesterday was Fixit-Thursday (we usually have Fixit-Friday, but today is Margaritas-Friday, so we rescheduled). You can now hide entries posted from external applications or sites that use our API. For example, you can now hide all entries "from fftogo". Some other recent improvements:
hidden.png
# We fixed some bugs with uploading photos # When choosing choosing which services to display on your profile, we added scrolling to prevent the page from being cut off for users with a lot of services # If you have your account open in multiple places and you change your password, the other signed in sessions will get signed out # Made improvements to the experience for picking usernames when creating an account or feed # If you have blocked a user, we won't show you any group invites they send you # As always, after you hide an entry, you can click on "hide other items like this one" for additional hiding options. - Paul Buchheit
Cool, thanks for this! :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Nice - Angus Burton
That specific example should NEVER be used. ;) Great job, though. Thanks! - Josh Haley
Glad to see the scroll bars on the 'Select which icons appear on your profile' dialog box but you are able to tick more then 5 services without an error. Would it be a good idea to add an error message when 6 or more services are selected? - Kol Tregaskes
No group invites from blocked users will be very welcome to a lot of people on FF. - Kol Tregaskes
NICE. Thanks! - Ken Sheppardson
Thanks. fftogo should never be blocked though. - NAKAMURA, Hiroshi via f2p
The people that don't like the Likaholix or Flickchart posts will be happy. - Josh Haley
Excellent! Thanks! - Nathan Chase
Very cool, thanks. Any chance of native FriendFeed entries getting a source designator, so one could hide them (but not hide things from say, the bookmarklet)? - Mark Trapp
Joygasm... - Johnny Worthington
Is there a way to set up a custom search to show native-FF posts only and NOT the custom API entries? - Rochelle
This is Awesome! :) Thanks Paul! (now if blip.fm and flickchart were services.......) - guruvan (Rob Nelson) via PeopleBrowsr
@guruvan Hey Rob, what is ur BlipFM DJ name ? I am on Blip, too, and we have a Ning Community for DJs at BlipFM.Ning DotCom - PaulFrankRizzo
hahaha! I mention blip because I want to HIDE it :) I'm not a big blip fan. It's not so bad here with many of the items having play buttons in the FF entry, but on Twitter it's downright noisy-obnoxious. I don't have a blip name. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
(and, um, duh...I guess now I can lol) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nice safe example, Paul. Good addition. - Louis Gray
cool feature! thanks -- have more margaritas! :) laughing at the screenshot LOL - Susan Beebe
Oh the sweet, sweet silence. - DGentry
O HAI - Josh Haley
Great -- goodbye Flickchart. - Brian Sullivan
Yay! Time to double my output of FlickChart comparisons! - Bwana
Paul - is there any possibility of being able to also SEARCH by API-based services? I'd really like to be able to use "service:servicename" in Saved Searches for API-based services. - Nathan Chase
Could this protect Friendfeed from sypmaster-like flooding? - Jérôme Flipo
Don't think I could 'hide Benjamin' :) - Charlie Anzman
Right. Where's the uniform "shared" designator for custom RSS "user's shared items" streams? This is impossible to filter otherwise. - ianf ⌘

There were some bugs in the "Twitter publishing" code that caused some entries to get published on Twitter when they should not, and others to not get published when they should. I've cleaned up the code to eliminate these problems, but it's possible some settings were lost. Please verify your settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting...
I apologize for any lost or unwanted tweets. Please let me know if you spot any other problems. - Paul Buchheit
Cheers for this Paul. How cool is it that one of the founders of FF still gets his hands dirty in the code. Once a coder, always a coder :-) - Keith Bennett via Nambu
Thanks Keith :) By the way, if none of your posts are making it through to twitter, it may be that you changed your password. To verify, simply click "Save changes" at http://friendfeed.com/setting... and we will check that your Twitter credentials are still good (and sign-out then back in to fix). - Paul Buchheit
Are you kidding me, there's actually some settings and options somewhere in the new friendfeed?! *passes out from the news* - Matthew DeVries
Matthew, in general all the same settings that the old ui had are available on the new one (plus a few more), though they are now divided on to several different pages. You should be able to reach all of the the settings by clicking on the word "settings" below your name in the top-right part of the page (the dialog shows a few, and links to all the others). - Paul Buchheit
Where are the settings to turn back on the service icons, to sort by service? - Matthew DeVries
You can filter by service by searching for service:twitter (or whatever service you like), and of course that can be combined with other search operators as well. See http://friendfeed.com/search... for more. - Paul Buchheit
Thanks Paul, sounds like you pulled an all nighter to fix these. - Robert Scoble
So to filter by a service, I have to know the service, which I won't know because the icons are gone, and I no visual queue by which to see it's a new service, OH and I need to write a separate filter, myself for all 2000 services that can feed to FF? Does that seem right to you? - Matthew DeVries
Yeah, unfortunately the code had gotten rather involved since it was trying to support both the old ui and the new (the old ui worked on a per-service basis instead of letting you decide individually on each entry), and the logic sometimes became inconsistent. I simplified it quite a bit, so there should be less room for bugs now :) - Paul Buchheit
Thanks, Paul. :) - Josh Haley
Matthew: Seems logical to me. You can read, so you can see if an entry came from Twitter, or Facebook, or Flickr (or even Flickr Favorites). And anyone importing 2000 feeds into FriendFeed is required to change their surname to Scoble. ;) - Andy Kruger
I have an idea, how bout next to each post, say next to the How long ago, you put something, say, the favicon for the service that posted that feed, then when I click on that icon, it takes me to all of that person's posts using that service? Wouldn't that be a great way to do it? It would certainly be a sever load neutral feature. In fact I think once you put it in, you'd never ever... more... - Matthew DeVries
Nice try, Matthew, I congratulate you on being awake, and carpe-diem'ing Paul here, but have to disappoint you - if FF wanted us to have favicons, they'd already issued us our favicons. Do you see any favicons that made the transition from earlier version. No? You think Paul nuked them by mistake... be my guest, and I'll be looking forward to the next couple of years' worth of your pleading for favicons when you could be learning to live both here and thereater without them. - ianf ⌘
No, I just use the scripts to put them back, but that is such an inelegant hack for something that should have it's own option to implement. - Matthew DeVries
I'm a bit confused about the "Post my FriendFeed entries on Twitter by default" and "FriendFeed (when there's no Cc box)" options. Are these exclusive? Does checking the first one mean all my FriendFeed posts will get posted to Twitter even if I uncheck the Cc box? - Tony Ruscoe
Paul, thank you thank thank you for the "Check CC Twitter box by default" option!!! That's one step closer to only needing Friendfeed. I'm almost ready to dump Google Reader AND Twitter now! - Curtis Jackson
Thanks Paul! - Edwin Khodabakchian
Tony, the "cc twitter by default" option sets whether then checkbox is checked or unchecked by default in the share box and bookmarklet. The other option ("when there's no cc box") applies mostly to the API and other off-site interfaces, such as email (mail share@friendfeed.com) and IM. For any given post, only one setting applies. - Paul Buchheit
I publish to Twitter by default but now link directly to the source. I figure that those finding outside of FF want to go to the source (while those reading on FF are already seeing the discussion). - Mike Reynolds
Hi Paul, about 15 mins ago I "shared" an item from FF here to "my feed" and "cc Twitter". But still not showing up on Twitter. Just thought I'd let you know. - Brian
Thanks Brian. It turns out there was a bug in the "Share" feature that sometimes caused us to sometimes not send the tweets (the new code errors on the side of not sending tweets). It's fixed now though. Please let me know if you spot any others. - Paul Buchheit
Appreciate the heads up Paul. Simple example of how companies can connect with their audience. - kilbuda
Paul, that did the trick! Thanks for looking into that. BTW, that was a quick fix! Just shared an item on FF and it pushed thru to Twitter instantly. - Brian
Hello Paul, when I try to publish just my google talk status to twitter and have "Link to source site instead of FriendFeed conversation" selected, it doesn't send the tweet. I'm not sure if this is because twitter seems to be having difficulty right now or if it's the lack of a source link because it's a google talk status? - ehaab
ehaab, publishing to Twitter was broken this morning, so no updates went out. It should work fine now however, including publishing updates from Google Talk. Sorry about that. - Paul Buchheit
thanks! it was driving me batty trying to figure out why it wasn't taking. - ehaab
I think it's still broken. I just posted via the Bookmarklet and CC'd twitter... no go. EDIT: my latest one just posted, must be intermittent. - Daniel Sims
Paul Buchheit
We had a bug tonight that triggered comment notification emails on feeds imported into groups/rooms. The bug was live for about 3 hours and affected about 1000 people. We apologize for these erroneous email notifications, and are implementing extra checks to ensure that it does not happen again.
I'm really sorry about this. I know how annoying unwanted email is :( - Paul Buchheit
I was wondering why people's comments were being emailed to me - RAPatton
Thanks, Paul. - Anne Bouey
I apologize for all the trouble that we've caused you tonight. I understand -- I'd be quite angry myself if another service did this to me. We have a few improvements in mind that should prevent this from happening in the future. - Tudor Bosman
I was getting them from comments made directly in my feed. None of these posts were in groups or rooms. - Christopher Harley
Christopher, we are working on switching from the old comment notifier (which only emailed if you hadn't been active on the site recently) to the new one (which is instant, allows for reply-by-email, etc), so it's possible those were intended, unless you had that feature switched off. For now, we've reverted the whole change until we can be sure that it's doing the right thing. - Paul Buchheit
I wondered what that was .. I went into settings to turn it off - thanks for the update - Nick Halstead
I wondered why I was getting those emails! One was titled "Are you being hacked (and do you know)?" - that was actually the proper title of the post - but it had me wondering! - Scott Loftesness
freaked me out this AM when i saw my inbox *stuffed* w/ FF items from my search groups. glad you guys posted this notice - i found it in my first search on the issue. - MikeAmundsen

Karim: the generators almost never work for anything short of telcos carrying 911 traffic.. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Cool, some people were saying it was a different power system, thanks for the update. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Rob, that gibes with my anecdotal experience :-) but why is that? what is the point of telling customers you don't have single points of failure in your datacenter when you do...? mishegoss. - Karim
Karim, there are ALWAYS single points of failure. If nothing else, Earth is a single point of failure :). As for the generator, supposedly that's what's powering things right now!! (which has me somewhat frightened) - Paul Buchheit
Paul: very true....And Karim, it's probably because the generator backups are rarely tested, certainly not regularly, and partially for this reason...the failovers don't work and they don't want to take customers down because a test went wrong - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I hope, Paul, that this will cause you guys to be able to go to the investors and get things happening on two or three sites, so we only see performance degradations in future calamities (since disaster will always strike) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
yay! - MikeAmundsen

Very sad test of how addicted I've become. I was jones-ing pretty hard. Glad you're back. - Ken Gidley
Glad your back up and running. - Russ Jackson
Paul, yeah, we can't eliminate SPOFs completely, but i've seen these places brag about how they have N+1 power systems, UPS, diesel generators that can run for days at peak load, priority contracts to have more diesel fuel delivered if necessary, etc. etc., and something happens and the whole data center just dies. you realize that you might be screwed in the event of Global Thermonuclear War :-) but you don't expect to be down for hours because somebody pushed the wrong button... - Karim
Nice to have you back. - Ignace Rodriguez
strangely enough, a transformer blew up outside earlier tonight and now my lights just flickered. going to make sure my UPS is charged :-D - Karim
Alex: Where have you ever been that they actually tested gens on a weekly (or regular even) basis. I've been around colos and CLECs for many years, and this happens all the time because there's never a test - guruvan (Rob Nelson)

glad to have ff back. What will happen to updates which were made during that time? will they appear on my ff site? - Okeane

It is a fact of computing...sometimes the power just quits. IP is great - we can always rely on RFC2549 for a no-electricity transport protocol. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Where you gone....I hardly noticed....OKAY! YES! Yes, I missed you! Satisfied?! - WorldofHiglet
glad FF is back! - (jeff)isageek
My browser reload button is exhausted. But all systems are go now—thanks for calming all the passengers by simply telling us what's really going on—awesome. *climbs out of search.twitter dingy and back onto the mothership* - Micah Wittman
guruvan: Most hospitals I've been to test their backup systems on a regular monthly schedule. Ironically, that makes the emergency power system in general less reliable than utility power. - Gabe
So it that not a fail whale but a school of fail whales?? - Amani
Gabe: ok..never worked in a hospital, but most of them do in fact have proper working backup power to my understanding. why can't the telcos and datacenters? this is a very common problem for them. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Rob, not everything is that simple. did someone drive their car into the generators? :P - Michael J. Cohen (mjc)
Does sitting for 2 hours watching all mentions of FriendFeed on Twitter search qualify as missing you? - Sharon McPherson
Have a fail-over version of Friendfeed on Google App Engine. I know it will take time and effort, but then it will mean built-in redundancy. And failing of both together will be a highly imbprobable event - Varun Mahajan
Michael, I know it's not all that simple, but you would be amazed at how often this happens in professional datacenters and at CLECs and without something as understandably disastrous as cars through buildings or bombs. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: when I first met Rackspace's chairman, Graham Weston, we talked about a failure they had when a truck knocked out power there. Turned out the chillers and generators had a flaw in their design that kept the generators from kicking on for a few seconds. This sounds exactly like what happened here. Rackspace worked with the chiller and generator companies to design a fix, but he told me that most data centers haven't upgraded (Rackspace's have). I wonder if this is the flaw that hit friendfeed yesterday? - Robert Scoble
I read somewhere that it had been mathematically shown that a computer program can never be 100% error-free because the error routines will have errors... Maybe it's the same type of thing here. - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Robert: That's very interesting. Don't know if that's what happened, but I do know that most of the time when I've seen this happen in a CLEC CO it's been much more simple than that. Usually attributable to human error (and lack of testing). I am curious to how, and how often Rackspace performs tests. Finding the design flaw you mention speaks highly of the company IMO. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob: they run tests on the power system very often. Unfortunately nothing tests a system like real life. - Robert Scoble
No, there are factors that just don't come into play in a "controlled" test scenario, no matter how thorough you try to make the test. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
It was the severity and length of the outage that was the surprise - but we have had electricity outages over a vast part of the continent that lasted days and caused by small flaws so this isn't out of that realm. But this is or should have been a much smaller more controlled situation. I am guessing there may be some adjustments in contracts and some heads rolling. Who else was affected by the situation? I get the impression that svcolo is a fairly large operation. - Brian Sullivan
Brian: if a data center goes down for two seconds it often takes an hour or longer to turn everything back on and get it all working properly again. - Robert Scoble
In this case it was definitely "longer" - Brian Sullivan
Very true...and often longer than that to get data systems working again, as they're often overloaded as soon as they come online (causing great difficulty in getting them to run correctly). I was very impressed with how quickly FriendFeed was able to have everything back to fully functional - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Brian: yup. I bet that the power came on pretty quickly, but bringing up a rack of equipment and getting everything talking to each other again can take quite a while. - Robert Scoble
I guess they will have to adjust their power uptime claims to read 100% (except for strange circumstances) ;-) - Brian Sullivan
no company anywhere should ever try to claim 100% uptime of anything. it's just not realistic. there's always some scenario that causes that to be off - if only by 0.0001% - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
maybe time for a pv solar third-tier backup - Matt Weeks
*points at th Tier 1 Colo data center with dual 10GigE core links on the first floor of the building he works in* - matthew john ernisse
I've been with Hurricane Electric 5 years and never experienced significant downtime. Luck? Maybe. Maybe not. - Jason Nunnelley
The good news is downtime seems an essential element of a social's' success. - Jason Nunnelley
When this happens I always wonder if someone hit the EPO: http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archive... - Phil Glockner
Brian, the SVcolo page you linked to is funny. love the part where they "assure 100% reliability" for the electrical power, with a "100% facilities uptime SLA." guaranteed to never fail or you get your next pizza free? guessing their hull is also 100% impervious to icebergs. +1 Phil. though day of week is also suspect. am superstitious about planned maintenance windows on Friday afternoons -- like standing in open field with a lightning rod during a thunderstorm. ;-) - Karim
matthew, i thought the Tier 1 data centers sucked? :-D with diversity, it sounds like you are in a Tier 4... - Karim
I think it is bound to happen with anywebsite specially when it is growing faster than expected. - ashish damania
ashish: it's bound to happen to just about any website. until a site is the size of google, yahoo etc, it;s not only possible, but probable that it will happen. -a definitely nice link there Phil :-) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I think some people got frustrated as if they paid to use Friendfeed. I wonder what would happen if websites like this eventually start to charge the users or would they be ad supported. I think the newness of the social networking will eventually fade as that of email. - ashish damania
In a sense, a lot of us do pay to use friendfeed. We pay with our time, we pay with our words and we pay with our content. - Alex Scoble
No customers = no job, Alex? - Curtis Jackson
The data center that I audited for 3 years switches to generator power on a weekly basis to test that it's working. - Alex Scoble
Unfortunately, we only host online banking sites. - Alex Scoble
lol Alex, I was going to mention, the centers that house banks come as close to never going down as possible. it's not unheard of, but it sure is the end of someone's world if they do go down - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
you move gradually towards Livejournal path - they had same once big, and even became annual tradition... yes, power losses became regular once-a-year thing, no matter what datacenter they were to use. And then they sold itself to Russian SUP :D - A.T.
welcome back :p - healingkid
Paul Buchheit
We added a 1-click login for Twitter users, so now it's easy for all your friends to try http://friendfeed.com
Picture 69.png
To RT, click http://twitter.com/home... It uses OAuth, so no password is required, and it automatically finds your Twitter friends on FriendFeed! It also imports your profile and picture. Big thanks to http://friendfeed.com/bgolub for making all this happen! (also, existing users can go to http://friendfeed.com/friends... to find Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail friends) - Paul Buchheit
fan bloody tastic! So we can post here and Twitterers can comment away without any complaints! The only think you need to try and do is bring in comments (about a share) from twitter into here! :) - Zee.
This is great...should help new users quite a bit. - Mark Krynsky
Bravo!!! Very nice! - David Cook
nice - Joe Azzara
thanks for making it effortless - Vedran Agovic
That's fantastic! Keep it up guys!! :) - Tad, Anti-Immanentizer
I'm hoping this will help to entice people over here. I'd much rather talk to people via FF than Twitter - WorldofHiglet
FrF + OAuth. Like. - tobe
Refresh your FriendFeed to see an updated first comment from Paul, including a link to RT this news: http://twitter.com/home... - Dan Hsiao
OK, I admit I'm dense. As an existing user will this help me find the folks I follow on Twitter? - Laura Norvig
Cool, is it possible we could have the ability to bulk import or non-FF Twitter friends as private feeds so we can track them in FF? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Laura, existing FriendFeed users should just go to http://friendfeed.com/friends... and click on the Twittter (and Facebook and Google) icons to find their friends. Kol, not yet, but I'm hoping to add something like that soon (improved imaginary friends). - Paul Buchheit
Thx, Paul - guess I haven't been to that page since the launch. btw, I'm definitely coming around to the new friendfeed (colors notwithstanding). - Laura Norvig
Great to see the standards working -OAuth fro Gogole and Twitter login on Friendfeed - Kevin Marks
That's a great tool, Paul! Found a few from Twitter and Facebook I didn't realise were on FF...:) - WorldofHiglet
Oh man, that is suh-weet. Works really well. - Laura Norvig
Paul, that would be wonderful, thank you. I'm keen to use FF as a kinda Twitter client. I'd love the ability to import my group I've created on Tweetvisor too but that would additionally require exporting facilities from Tweetvisor, and from asking them they've told me it's low priority (which is fair enough). - Kol Tregaskes
That's fantastic! Sharing with all of my not-yet-friendfeedified twitter friends. Thanks, Paul! - Eric Johnson
This IS good. Thanks for the hard work, Benjamin Golub. - Micah Wittman
Love that you guys are making the entry more enticing. What about refining what FriendFeed is further? Like: Twitter + conversation. For new people who don't get it and most without the time to get it, simplifying the message or experimenting further with your "first impression" on your splash page might be worth a try. Example: wouldn't it be cool to have a live conversation streaming to show just how FF has a leg up on the scattered Twitter stream? - kilbuda
this is fabulous!!! - Angela P.
It's so convenient for new comer like me! - tsssimon
Just tried it and it works great. - Iván Abrego
i have tried this too and am richer by 33 Twitter friends - jagannath rao
Nice work. Keeps getting better around here :-) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
WOW! 313 new Twitter people! Amazing what the OAuth did. Amazing. That just completely Rocks! - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
That was just too easy, and found a bunch of Twitter people. I just subscribed, but I hope they participate. I'm sure I'll have to trim later. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Thanks for everything Benjamin and the others, that is really great. :) - Alp
I was subscribed to exactly 100 of the people I follow on Twitter. Added 93 more. Funny, this is actually helping me find people I *don't* want to follow in either place. - Laura Norvig
I'm looking forward to the "advanced imaginary friends" section which lets me as an existing FriendFeed user view all the twitter updates from people that don't use FriendFeed. - Brian Sloane
很好,继续努力 - Kunshou(困兽)
Sweet! - Don Strickland
Just posted this to my stream then saw this, Cool stuff Paul - Charlie Anzman
Some time ago I spent lots of time in removing my Facebook-Friendfeed integration, and didn't succeed, Facebook refused to remove it. Since that - no info about any other my services to Facebook, ever. - orie
Happy to hear that there will be an improved imaginary friend option! - Jacob
The improved imaginary friend feature will be great. No need to visit Twitter much then! - Pinksy
How do we give virtual bucks to Paul, oh I see a like button here. Off to work on the influence funnel, who cares about dollars, I want eyes ;) - Mark Essel
FriendFeed is constantly bringing new value to the service. I'm loving it! - Amie Gillingham
its relay cool - Kaspar Minosiants
great idea - andy brudtkuhl
Oh Thanks i was looking for something like this - Asahi
Is the imaginary friends feature completely disabled for the moment? Or am I just not looking in the right place? - Mark Jacobs
Mark: imaginary friends have been replaced by groups. - Robert Scoble
When is OpenID coming up? - Mohammad Abdurraafay
This feature is AWESOME :) Bravo! - Iain Baker
I just imported 8,000 new Twitter friends. Worked MUCH BETTER than last time. - Robert Scoble
Smart move guys. A quick way to grow FF users is to tap into the current hot properties. Can't believe other Social Networks are so slow to respond. - Neill Adamson
Paul, is there a way to sync it so that people I no longer follow on Twitter are unfollowed on FriendFeed? - Jorge "JungleG" Escobar
Great news on the advanced imaginary friends. That plus the ability to comment back to Facebook posts as easily as we reply to Twitter would be killer. - Kevin Kuphal
Finally! :-) - Richard Joerges
Personally, I am having problems logging in and logging out of friendfeed. I receive the following error: Access Denied The resource you requested is private. You may be able to access it if you sign in to a different FriendFeed account, or there may just be an error in our service. We apologize for the inconvenience. If you see this error happening a lot, please let us know in our support forum. Return to the FriendFeed homepage - Bryan Penczak
Then, I am forced to log back in, where friendfeed says that I have not given access to twitter/facebook. I log in with my friendfeed account, and at first it didn't work, but now it does. The only way I was able to log back in to friendfeed was to have myself logged back in to twitter or facebook within the same browser. Something's weird. - Bryan Penczak
Not sure why this wasn't implemented a while ago but it's a welcome addition. - Jason Williams
None of my Facebook contacts are on ff. - JECO Photo
So how do existing FF members use it? - Tiffany Monhollon
Ca passe 50 fois par jour ce truc là sur FriendFeed ! C''est pas possible d'arr^ter, j'en ai marre de le voir franchement ... ^^ - Jean-Marie Gall via twhirl
Tiffany, existing FF members should go to http://friendfeed.com/friends... to find their Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail friends. - Paul Buchheit
Encore ?? C'est pas possible ! ;( - Jean-Marie Gall via twhirl
RT'd ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
@Robert cannot seem to do that with groups. What I want to do: Concentrate different RSS feeds (e.g. newswires) which do not necessarily have an account in any other social network into one imaginary friend's collection of feeds. - Mark Jacobs
Mark, "groups" (formerly "rooms") are able to import feeds just like regular users (and imaginary friends). See https://friendfeed.com/xoogle-... for example (imports the blogs of all known xoogle startups). The only thing special about imaginary friends is that they don't have usernames (or rather we assign a random 128 bit username). - Paul Buchheit
Paul, the DM option on imaginary friends should perhaps be removed. Also, imaginary friends do not show up on the search dropdown list when you type in their name in the search box. - Kol Tregaskes
Paul, is it possible to automatically create "imaginary friends" from twitter following list? What I would like is to read all my Twitter in FriendFeed; many of twitterers though are not on FF, so I have to create them by hand which is tedious. Also, it would be nice to allow to add them to some special list. - Ihar Mahaniok
Ihar, see my comment up in the middle and Paul's reply. Looks like FF are working on it. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Nice tool, discovered some more contacts ! - François Granger
love this guys wonderful - Thomas Power
This must be the reason for all the new follows I've been getting over the last few days. Congrats! - Michael Fidler
That's actually quite useful. Thank you! - snapixel
Still would like an imaginary friend than making bunch of Groups to simulate peoples that doesn’t use FF. BTW, unlike the Facebook Connect login, when I tried logging in using Twitter, it made a new account for me on FF instead of opening my own (which also has Twitter activity added). - Natsuki Seika
ditto to natsuki... - Steve Austin
Wow, real nice and simply to add my Twitter friends :O - Rosenkrieger
Good move! - Lantrix
FriendFeed News
FriendFeed adds support for Facebook, Joost, BackType, Twine, and Wakoopa - http://blog.friendfeed.com/2008...
Great, finally no more need to add it as generic RSS feed. But how about including photo stories too? I can't find a way to estract a feed for them, but it must exist through some API as lifestream.fm does include them in its service. - flapic
Good step. Puzzled why shared item entries' text appears while plain old vanilla entries do not though. - Kevin Leroux
It would be also nice to combine comments on FB with comments on FF - flapic
I can't add my Facebook account to FF,I can't either add the "Facebook Mini-Feed Status Stories page" or the "Status Stories page" on the add Facebook status URL page.Notice of "The given URL does not appear to be a Facebook Status feed URL" comes no matter how I try. - Steve Chou
Steve: have you turned off the feed in your privacy settings? See http://friendfeed.com/e... - Bret Taylor
The only appropriate item for me would be facebook, but it's pretty much just my twitter feed and the occasional other random thing. Cool that they added it, but skipped :) - Brett Kelly
Bret: Still the same after I follow your suggestion. - Steve Chou
great idea, but unfortunately i can't add my facebook status :( "We could not find the given account" here's a screenshot http://www.zweipunktnull.org/blog... - Carsten
Carsten, there's a character encoding problem. Facebook seems to be returning an unpredictable mix of utf-8 and latin-1. I'll have to figure out how to handle that (we currently assume utf-8). - Paul Buchheit
Carsten, your Facebook import should now work. Try again and let me know how it goes. - Paul Buchheit
Why not let the users create their own input modules for any service they want? - Felix
Felix: you can add any RSS feed as a "blog" service type. It isn't ideal but it will get any feed into FriendFeed. - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin, thank you, but I'd love to configure the favicon and the wording - Felix
Now Facebook finally work on FF. - Steve Chou
so when will you start supporting blip.fm? - Sean O' Grady
The facebook pages linked to at http://friendfeed.com/about... don't exist or are not as shown. - SuezanneC Baskerville
FB has had a redesign and the status updates link is gone. Can anyone help here? - Kol Tregaskes

We launched! - Bret Taylor
Nice. I like the Email/IM notification accordion the the home page. The people who stayed on legacy FriendFeed are going to feel this one. - Mark Trapp
Un-like! - YusufOzanTasdemir
Can we get an old.friendfeed.com - Andrew Smith
Congrats! - Stephen Mack
I so love these new features. I have been using the beta since it came about, and I used it instead of the regular, ugly Friendfeed. One problem, their is no accounts button, how do I change other information. That was one slight design flaw that needs to be fixed. - Zachary TG
@Andrew Smith +1 - Hüseyin Mert
Awesome :) - Ross Miller
At last ! - Luka
i don't want to use this. There must be alternative to use old FF - uyuyang-Filiz Koyuncu
congrat's - mike "glemak" dunn
Zachary: we updated the "settings" page ("settings" link below your name in the top right); everything should be in there now. Let us know if you notice anything missing. - Tudor Bosman
horrible :S we want old FF - Kaan Ukturk
There are quite a few user styles available if you're using Firefox and the Stylish extension. http://userstyles.org/styles... - tiffany
Guys, you're doing a bad thing launching half-baked version without a notice. There's at least no imaginary friends and I can't export my subscriptions now (I've used FrF as RSS reader and have hundreds of them). That's not mentioning another little tweaks you've missed (i.e. service icons — even FaceBook got it right, they have service icons for imported entries and have no for their own status updates). You're ruining the whole experience of managing a lot of information. - Juras Vetrau
It's awesome. I really appreciate http://friendfeed.com/setting.... Also, I don't want to be negative, but is the "live search" coming? - Jérôme Flipo
congrats! now back to "listening to your users" pls :) - Begründung des Verfahrens
please give back old friendfeed, this one looks bad - Peter
Juras, I think there are one other % of FF users who feel the same. Same think happened to Facebook users. But we've to move on. Imaginary friends can be added as "feed". The lack of service icons AFAIK increased the generic participation (in Friendfeed). You can create filters for "service=" if it's necessary. I agree with you on the OPML part. - Jérôme Flipo
Rock & Roll! Very happy with the interface. Thanks for listening to the considered opinions you have, and implementing fixes when necessary. You guys have done a fantastic job of keeping people informed of new changes. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I still don't like it, but I still continue to using FF - Kristian Salonen
Those who can't handle the real-time, press Q: RT will be disabled by default for your account (re-press Q for the flood). - Jérôme Flipo
Juras: I'm pretty sure they've been letting everyone know about this for some time...Where have you been? - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The settings to automatically post likes or comments to Twitter are missing. - Pat Hawks
couldn't you just put the old FF to old.friendfeed.com or somewhere like that? - Barış Ünver (beyn.org)
Bret, you SHOULD check this out. New realtime version has JavaScript errors can be observed in Firebug: http://i39.tinypic.com/33u64qp... Now, I got 93 error. I think you changed something about AJAX response format (?) - Alp
+1 Rob, this is hardly without notice. They've been shouting about it for weeks. - Pat Hawks
Alp: thanks, we are looking into the issue - Bret Taylor
Always there are those resistant to change. I remind you all of the last couple of Facebook updates. At least the FriendFeed team listens and responds to complaints, problems and issues, and corrects them when necessary ----Big smiles and kudos for that! - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
i don't want to use this. :(((((((((((((( ! i love old version! :( - AMIN BZ
@jeromeflipo: FrF was internet's GTD tool — one inbox for all links and discussions with accurately separated content. Now it's a vast of content where you should read instead of scanning. It takes much more time. New design is good but core features doesn't work properly. - Juras Vetrau
You can find your Twitter publishing settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting.... You can find all the links to your settings by clicking the "settings" link under your name at the top right of every page (http://friendfeed.com/...) - Bret Taylor
I love the new FF. Just wonder if the play/pause state can be remembered, so people might disable realtime updates. - Arnaldo M Pereira
Bret, how do I get to the Advanced Twitter settings from the settings link under my name? I don't see it. - Pat Hawks
Would be great to get the "best ofs" in a list via email too. - Steve Rubel
Bret, you're welcome. I hope you don't remove http://friendfeed.com/realtime option for nostalgy :) By the way, in new version how can we learn users have subscribed us? You removed it from user popup dialog. And I think user-info popup has many whitespaces :) Why don't u fill them with comment/like stats? It shows the activity of user. I think it is critical. - Alp
i love it! - patrick
The play/pause state is remembered, so you can permanently turn off real-time if you don't want it. Steve: great point, we will add the ability to get "Best of" emailed to you. - Bret Taylor
Play/pause wasn't remembered once, now it works. Maybe it was my mistake, thanks! - Arnaldo M Pereira
Nice work. - Caleb Elston
trying to enable IM notifications - maybe just slow? Not getting anything on the ol' GTalk.. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
love the new site, once I got use to it, keep up the good work - Kim Landwehr
i really love the new interface :) - alexandere
what?! beta can't be over, it's only been three weeks! - Edward Zwart
Bret: I'm not seeing the posting link on the settings page: http://www.flickr.com/photos... How do you get to it without memorizing the URL? - Mark Trapp
I Want old version / I don't like it - محمّـدصالح
@Yaroslav, totally agree. - Alexey Ivanov
First impression: new design just sucks compared to the old one, ant to the twitter's, if that's what you want to be like. - Laenn
@Yaroslav oh yes - интернет-тоторо via fftogo
no, please, this doesn't make sense!! - Giovanni Calia | estragon
Feedback : I want old FF ... Pls old.friendfeed.com - Hamza(TEAkolik)Şamlıoğlu
where are you old ff? - Ersin KOÇ
wo0T! the IM notifier ROCKS...I'M uber-stoked on that feature. (IM is the new email! lol!) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
No offends, but seriously, the visual design sucks. - Alexey Ivanov
I wish it could use a little more of my monitor screen real estate. :) - Ray Cromwell
Bret, Dan or s.b. else, another CRUCIAL PROBLEM I discovered, after this new release, when people subscribed to me, I got notification mails entitled "... subscribed to your Friendfeed" twice or three times (which have a few minutes of delay between each other). You changed anything about mails settings(?) My friends ALSO reported that they get 2+ mails for new subscriber notifications. - Alp
Am I on Facebook? - Qwerty
Mark, you can find the posting link from the Tools page (found at the bottom of any page) - Dan Hsiao
If you are going to give us all of this (wasted) grey space to the side of our live feed, at least let us put our own background on the page. I mean, that would make you that much more like twitter, which seems to be the goal. - Wizetux
Qwerty: did you get a stupid picture gift (or see a bunch of "Which 70s rockstar are you" quizzes? LOL! -That's how you'd know you're on Facebook. (oh, and the new spam that they have there....got my first one today!) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Bret: Can I post via IM? If so can I CC:Twitter from there? - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
doh! I didn't see the help link in the IM. I have another reading lesson scheduled for tomorrow - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
ok...the CC:Twitter via IM question still stands....if not, can you think about adding that? - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Really like the new UI. Thanks! - Oliver Bouchard
I need the feed icons back. - Peter
i really like the new look and feel - the page scrolling when it auto-updates takes a little getting used to. - J.D. Deutschendorf
Good beta period. Here's to the Whole New Thing™. - Chris Baskind

Dan Hsiao: aha! Thanks. - Mark Trapp
Mark, it's now available under your settings too :) - Dan Hsiao
Awesome, thanks Dan. - Mark Trapp
How do I add virtual friends? - Peter
The best thing about this is that ff.im now points at the new design. - Steve Lacy
doubt i can get easily used to the "new" ff :( still have a firefox tab open on the realtime, with the old layout. guess i will just keep it as long as i can 0:) - giuseppe c. | markgreene
I'm disappointed Imaginary friends has disappeared. I was actually using that feature to follow friends on Twitter (who didn't have FF accounts). Is there a way to do the same thing? - Marc Chung
looks gr8! - Amit
FOR ALL OF THOSE WANTING IMAGINARY FRIENDS: http://friendfeed.com/about... - Wizetux
@Wizetux Thanks. Btw, your caps are on :) - Marc Chung
New interface sucks. It really sucks, and giving headaches. You shouldve kept the old interface. Thanks for ruining one of my daily routines. - Onur Gündüz
lovin it. are the best-of-summaries für the lists coming back? - Marcel Weiß
@Marc: I know, I was attempting to yell over the noise of the grumbling over the new layout. - Wizetux
Will it help if I join the crowd disliking the new version? Can't follow the conversation, too much color, too much moving around... - Handem
Bret where are best of for lists? I don't see them anymore. - Steve Rubel
The landing page - friendfeed.com - is especially great ! - Ahsan Ali
Bret, Turkish users ask a favor; please, we ask for old.friendfeed.com ~ old style, look our avatars. - Hüseyin Mert
Not gonna happen, dude. Progress is progress. - LANjackal
I don't understand how to create Imaginary Friends. Yes "create a feed", whatever that's real helpful, not. I think the source for every entry should be an icon on the right like the previous version. Real-time updates are interesting and comments are the only reason to use this over twitter. New posting feature is good but everyone isn't on FF so I need Imaginary friends to continue to use FF or else buh-bye! - Jude
@Jude The terminology is a bit confusing: It should really read "create a group" and add feeds to the group: Click "Browse /edit groups" > "Create a group". Setting it to private is basically the same thing as creating an Imaginary friend. - Marc Chung
恭喜上线 - suso
Please, old style friendfeed interface.New interface is wrong... - nagas
Great job! It's SOOOOOO lightweight! It works on all my mobile devices! I love you guys! Nowadays it's so nice and rare to see redisign which doesn't make an interface a slow-working monster - orie via fftogo
@Marc, @Wizetux thanks for clarifying. At some point during the beta they were using the terminology, "create a feed" and now you have to click on Groups in order to get to the place to "create a feed" but you have to know that it's called "create a group" - AWKWARD ... I think that is a navigational fail and a nomenclature fail. "Create a feed" is important enough that it should have it's own link on every page OR Groups should just be called Feeds. - Laura Norvig
Yep. It's one of the most enjoyable and notable addition in years in the way it's handled. It's in its complexity where, as the experiment is, as a whole a very as speedy, as you want it and as slow as reading is. Missing everything or nothing. Noticing and warming up of individuals, all linked by that exercise, always now expanding. Good job to all of you, the ideas were really good in all ways. As played out. Many thanks. ;p - Zu_ElijahBailey
for the interface. I think it is not as good as old edition. - Ccming
I WANT THE OLD VERSION PLEASE!!!!!!!!! - TechFuga
I hope you have read my bug report above. - Alp
or can we have a link for the old version!!!! - TechFuga
One more request: can we please have an API for userscripts? Due to dynamic nature of pages it suddenly became very hard to do anything persistent to FriendFeed from Greasemonkey. All I need is a hook from inside FrF javascript to process new portions of pages. - Alex Kapranoff
+1 to Alex Kapranoff's request. Also, please at least bring back service icons (them missing really interrupts my parsing of the stream, especially with those big ass avatars), if you won't provide us with http://old.friendfeed.com (or http://classic.friendfeed.com :P) - Gina Häußge
Gina, there is a user script to add service icons, in case that helps: http://userscripts.org/scripts... - Micah Wittman
Micah, thanks, already found that (first thing was to look up on userstyles and userscripts for means to help myself ;)), but it's kind of a hack, and IMHO it would be way better if the FF team included that feature back into the code base. Don't know why anyone would consider it a good idea to remove it in the first place tbh, but hey, we all know these days... - Gina Häußge
I don't want to use this. There must be alternative to use old FF - altblog
Congrats, guys. Even works on IE6 now. - James Myatt
sorry, it's horrible - chewzer via fftogo
get over it and use a third party client... you sound like people who use CDs - Kemp Edmonds via twhirl
Kemp, show me one that works as well and is as visually appealing as the old site (and also on both windows and linux without depending on Air (because that still kinda sucks under Linux)) and I'll shut up ;) - Gina Häußge
sadly as a windows user and therefore pleeb (Slang for plebian. Often used to refer to noobs in an elitist sense.) by Macers and Linux' who can't help but be the envy of all. Sadly I sit contented by massive numbers of development projects and a variety of programs to choose from that is generally unlimited in cutting edge web apps... although I am a windows pleeb. - Kemp Edmonds via twhirl
@Micah I tried the script. It doesn't work with imaginary friends. - Peter
now look super - Faizar
How do I create imaginary friend feeds in the new gui? - Carlos Brefe
Ouch, don't like. Agree with some of Juras V's comments, this makes skimming my feed for keeping a pulse on info/discussions MUCH worse for the time-starved (not speaking of RT aspect). Oh well, will try this for a bit, but feels like point where in Tom Peters' language FF is moving to "fire me as a customer." (Yes, I know we're not paying customers. I would have paid for old svc, was... more... - Casey
Will the daily activity emails (basically a digest) resume? Mine seemed to halt Apr 27 and the Email settings which seem currently available are absolutely flooding my inbox (had to turn it off within 5 mins). Please bring back daily digest type emails, really helpful if away for business or other reasons and ability to skim to catch up on info. - Casey
Thanks Friendfeed-Team for this new, cool UI: http://friendfeed.com/wiredry... - Ryo
@mchung Thanks for trying to clarify. Although creating a feed does not work the same since if a person already has a feed that's private, I can't use the same name. Bring back imaginary friends!!! - Jude
Congrats FF... sorry I am late to the party...my work life is outta control... crazy busy! I miss FF :(..... - Susan Beebe
I fully converted to FriendFeed BETA soon as it launched as I thought it rocked - now I don't have to put beta.friendfeed.com all the time :) - Nicholas James
My impression of the new Friendfeed... http://j-m-williams.com/2009... - Jason Williams
This is awesome! Back from the future! I _cant_ use twitter anymore. _cant_. - Lakshman Prasad
Its not my friendfeed, its a horrible dream! :(( - Инк Лонгтан
you need a graphic designer or art director i think. - Furkan Tunalı
design (layout, interaction) had been mostly better in old variant, but AJAX engine you use in new variant just rocks (old ajax code was dead meat slow crap for desktops on steroids) - A.T.
Bret, this page is has no entries right now: http://friendfeed.com/bret.... Your first comment page is OK, but all the next ones are empty. Weird. - Jérôme Flipo

Cool. Any way for it to appear in the Mac OS X menu bar instead of the dock? Or is that not possible with Air? - Mark Trapp
We looked pretty hard Mark, but couldn't find a way. I'd love to know if there's some way to do it in Air. - Casey Muller
Not bad, if you're into that kind of thing. - Ron Bailey
I wonder why it asks for password instead of remote key. Aren't remote keys designed for third party usage patterns such as notifiers etc? I mean, Fftogo works with remote key, why shouldn't notifier do so as well? - Urbansheep
Wonderwool, the notifier is first party usage :-) - Casey Muller
No problem Casey, I figured it was something you guys had looked at. One other thing as I've got it running for a few hours: it notifies me of people's comments that I'm not subscribed to (presumably because they are commenting on a post that someone I am subscribed to posted). It's one thing to see those comments at FriendFeed.com, but it's unwanted to have to be notified of them in real time. - Mark Trapp
Casey, technically — yes (being built and offered by friendfeed and all), but everything that's not under friendfeed.com domain (be it a service or an app) is "outside service", which should be treated as a point of possible attack and thus sandboxed or made safe otherwise. If you take a look at flickr uploader, it uses the same model as any service that's not flickr.com — log into... more... - Urbansheep
Good points Wonderwool, and we thought about both options. One thing to keep in mind about Air though, is that it's a browser technology, and even shares cookies with your web browser. So logging in to the notifier app is exactly the same level of security risk as logging in to friendfeed.com with Safari or IE. - Casey Muller
Thanks for the suggestion Mark, those kind of preferences are definitely on our to-do list. - Casey Muller
ERROR: When I run the AIR app, nothing happens. I see the "ff" icon in the system tray. If I right-click and choose "Settings", the notification window pops-up for a half-second, and then disappears. If I right-click and choose "Settings" again, nothing happens. I've uninstalled the app, reinstalled the app, restarted the computer. Always the same result. Other AIR apps work fine (Tweetdeck for example). I'm running Windows XP, Firefox 3.0.7 and IE 8. - Nathan Chase
Sorry about the trouble Nathan, can you try again now? - Casey Muller
Casey - Yes! It works now. Was there something broken on my profile on your end to interface with the app? It started working as soon as you posted. - Nathan Chase
Yes, I reset your notifier settings to the defaults, thanks for bearing with us. - Casey Muller
@Casey - no problem - just wanted to help so that you knew of any bugs. Thanks! - Nathan Chase
IDEA: This notifier would be the perfect vehicle to work out showing direct responses to posts I've made. Showing responses to posts that I've commented on would also be a big help - as the current process of going to my http://friendfeed.com/nathanc... page and combing through the posts to see what's been updated is not ideal. So some thoughts for you - to have that functionality as toggles in addition to selecting from one's Lists. Thanks! - Nathan Chase
Bret Taylor
Sorry if you have gotten duplicate subscription notification/request emails in the past few minutes. We had a glitch in our email delivery system, and it has been fixed.
Could this also have delayed / stopped verification emails from being sent? Should I re-send them? - Tony Ruscoe
Tony: yes, our system has an email backlog now. It should catch up soon. Sorry for the issues! - Bret Taylor

The "Re-share" function has been replaced with a more powerful "Share" dialog.
Picture 4.png
Also, based on feedback, all the per-entry links are visible by default (nothing appears on hover). - Bret Taylor
1UP Bret. Wasn't feeling the hover. - Derrick
Thank you - Lindsey is Fierce!
By "per-entry links" do you mean shortened URLs? - Mitch
Mitch: I mean the "Hide - Reshare" links that are attached to each entry. - Bret Taylor
I just noticed that! - Anne Bouey
Nice! - Ken Sheppardson
Yay! I just noticed this before I see this entry. Makes me happy. - Anika Malone
Uh, that's not going to be the standard bookmarklet from now? Please say no. - Anika Malone
Very cool... and thanks for including the "Share" URLs, particularly the short URL. Is the little "x" in the upper right to dismiss the window missing intentionally? - Ken Sheppardson
I like the UI change. One minor suggestion: add a close box [X] to the dialog; I found out that you could close it by clicking outside, but I think it would be easier with an explicit action (or even "close this window") - Glen Campbell
Nice! I just would like ESC as a shortcut to leave it please (this is my reflex when trying to escape this kind of pop up) - Stanislas Jourdan
Stanislas, that pop up sucks balls on my netbook screen since I can only see up to 'Post' but clicking off of it helped. Odd there's no 'cancel' button. - Anika Malone
wow nice. - Alfredo
now how about that bookmarklet - Alfredo
Duuuuuuuuuuuuude... I can embed the chat on my site... WIN - Johnny Worthington
where is the "cancel" hiding in the share popup ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
Bret, looks like there's a bug or something: http://beta.friendfeed.com/directe... - directeur
can the admins add the friendfeed-beta to the "to" list ? - Kishore Balakrishnan
Thanks - great response to the feedback!! I'm very happy to see hide back. - Robin Barooah
A close button has been added - sorry for the oversight. - Bret Taylor
Why are those images showing up on every FF post? - Andrew Leahey
Andrew, this happened to me (added image) and I deleted the post and recreated it. - LPH™ and his dog P™
Happened to me as well. Very strange. - Andrew Leahey
you could've clicked on the gray area to close it too. - Alfredo
I think the fact that it hasn't be noticed instantly shows how few people actually post text directly through FF. - Andrew Leahey
Andrew: this is a spurious error, and we are pushing a fix now. - Bret Taylor
Bret: What do you mean by spurious error? Was it a user error on my part? Not trying to bust you, just not sure what you mean. - Andrew Leahey
Meaning it was not happening with all posts - it was an issue with one of our backends and caching. Let me know if you see the problem again. - Bret Taylor
Gotcha, will do. Thanks for the quick fix. - Andrew Leahey
I really like the embed feature, I can put a post in a blog post and the comments appear in real time, in the blog post as updates! That's something I haven't seen anywhere. http://breakingnewsviafriendfe... - Wallace
This is awesome, thanks! - Robert Scoble
yay! - Shey
Can FF get any better? ....just wait 1/2 a day ;-) - Mark Traphagen
cool; is the comment box gone? - Anthony Citrano
Wow! This is quite amazing. - Brandon Titus
Beta site only? - NAKAMURA, Hiroshi via f2p
This is cool, but I think the Quick Links to the services are superflous.... and the dialog barely fits my firefox viewport (on a laptop). - Ahsan Ali
:) A lot can happen in a day: http://beta.friendfeed.com/micahwi... - Micah Wittman
It's not working for me :( - Richard Lawler
Works for me! This is sweet! - Helen Sventitsky
In fact, I think the 'Share elsewhere' section could be collapsed by default. - Ahsan Ali
Wow, great! This is so cool. - Ryo
Impressive ... what is next?? :) - Amani
cool new function! Just added a blog post with this dialogue - http://www.jeroendemiranda.com/friendf... - Jeroen De Miranda
That is really great and useful. I liked Short URLs. - Alp
I'm getting some bad results with short urls not pointing to the long URL it's supposed to, ending up in non-beta friendfeed and some other weirdness. - Boris Gordon
Cool! Thanks =) - Anton
Embed - no way!!!! - Roberto Bonini
I suppose short URL <http://ff.im/2lx3d> will eventually point to the beta site, but how about it should do that RIGHT NOW? ;-)) - ianf ⌘
Bret, this is far better, thank you. I love that we can see the short URL (this could really to with being on the share box and the bookmarklet as well as the embed code. The quick links are very useful too. But it's still just a link to the post not actually opening the post up to new feeds (i.e. with sync'ed comments and likes). Would this be possible please? - Kol Tregaskes
What I'd like to see is the possibility to share the comments when you reshare it to another feed. - Brome
In fact you could combine this new share dialog box with edit post options and we could edit/add/remove the images, the link(s), the title and the feeds the post (the ability to remove from existing feeds and add to new feeds). - Kol Tregaskes
Brome, yep basically open the post to new feeds (or edit existing ones). - Kol Tregaskes
Really impressed and agree with Kol that this should be the standard dialog across all Shares - Joe Dawson
is embed realtime? If so it could replace the comment section on blogs easily. - Rahul Das
Rahul, I'm typing this comment in here: http://breakingnewsviafriendfe... to prove that yes the embed code is real-time. Now that is *excellent*!!! Shame it's in a window though. - Kol Tregaskes
this is awesome. Now someone needs to come up with some ready to paste code for blogs and we would have an awesome commenting platform. - Rahul Das
like the share function - eric
Much better distinction from "Reshare"(RT) which conceptually was more of a like. - Michiel Sikkes
Give us the ESC shortcut to close the popup window - Waldemar Schott
Good idea, +1 Waldemar - Ahsan Ali
Waldemar, agree we really need the ESC as exit. - Kol Tregaskes
Is it possible to unframe the embed code so it's a little tidier than this: http://www.e-lusion.co.uk/blog...? For instances I have to set a height when I don't really want a limit. Either way, this is superb! And thanks to Wallace (http://beta.friendfeed.com/wallace... pointing this out to me! :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Good point Kol. There is a problem when there are so many comments, tho. - Roberto Bonini
Roberto, yep but not sure this is possible. It would be nice though. :-) The new way to blog? ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Maybe. But I was thinking of doing that watchlist of mine using the embeds. What do you think? - Roberto Bonini
And did you know this embed updates instantly???? - Roberto Bonini
Loving the new Share, thanks Bret. Would be cool if the Bookmarklet will have these options too. - Majento
very nice ... It would be even better if the frame was not visible. - Kevin Nordmand
Roberto, yep it's real-time. Yeah that watchlist would work, just create a private post on your site and add the embed code. A little fiddly though. - Kol Tregaskes
Bret, thanks. What about sharing via Gmail or email in general? - Damond Nollan
Now I want the 'edit' form upgraded with the same 'To:' field, so I can add crossposts after-the-fact. - Michael R. Bernstein
Everyone noticed the retweet icons down the bottom, didn't they? - Johnny Worthington
I have a bit of a problem, at my resolution of 1366x768, if there's a photo in the re-share I can't see the "quick links" section at the bottom, and there's no way of scrolling this screen. - Louis Simoneau
Great stuff but now I need this same functionality in the bookmarklet! - AJ Kohn
sweet! - .LAG liked that
Johnny, yep. :-) -
