"Where do I spend my attention? That's all I have. Unlike many others in the tech community I don't have a lot of money to invest in companies. I also don't have coding skills, so can't build stuff, so the only way I can build stuff is to spend my time judiciously and focus attention through my video camera's lens and my blogging. So, here we go about FriendFeed and why I've cut back on using it and what might be in its future: Tonight TechCrunch's MG Siegler pointed out FriendFeed is dead. I can't disagree. I've been spending a lot less time there. I've noticed that even Louis Gray's feed has less engagement than it used to have. There are a few reasons for that."...

Twitter a replacement for FriendFeed? Not for me. Twitter lacks so many features that FF has.
- Kol Tregaskes
And who cares if geeks have left FF. Great, we have normals here on FF. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
And still no-one has commented on this post on Posterous. Maybe there aren't enough Geeks on Posterous. Where have all the Geeks gone. Long time passing. Quick Batman, turn on the Geek search. Scoble says Friendfeed is dead so it must be true.
- Gilbert Harding
geeks are spread too think between too many services with good ideas - but all need a certain critical mass. I dont get posterous, it's a clone of tumblr, and so is yahoo's meme - why 3 the same? Why do i have to be on all 3 as some of my contacts chose one, others the other. What do I do? all of them and repeat the same stuff? one of them because it will be the more successful, one of them because i like the stuff shared there better? And that's just one kind of service...

Kol, FriendFeed needs geeks, managers etc.. in order to keep its information's quality. That's the point.
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Does it though? I rather read about non-geek stuff. My Best of page now contains very little geeky threads and it's great.
- Kol Tregaskes
FF has been like this for a while now though.
- Kol Tregaskes
It depends.. I'd like to find more & better geeky and managerial stuffs in my best of page. I'm trying everyday to stick with FF and what it is offering to me now, but fact is that it's less 'valuable' than a few weeks ago. Really sorry (and sad) to tell this.
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
I love posterous but it ain't no Friendfeed. And twitter? Please. And Kol, did you just call me normal? Should I be insulted or take it as a compliment? :-]
- Vicarbott
FriendFeed needs: #1 to keep its 'knowledgeable' user base growing #2 to continue innovating the Social Media / web2.0 whatever. Or else..
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
So, question #1: is there a strategy to keep FriendFeed's 'knowledgeable' user base growing?
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Question #2: Is the FriendFeed team (managers, devels..) working fulltime on it? If so | not, what's the plan?
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Hehe, Jim. It's a compliment, well if you go by this. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Thierry, nope. From what I know no one is working on it, they've all been split up or left FB.
- Kol Tregaskes
I just don't see why FF *needs* so-called 'geeks' to survive. There are plenty of types of people on here and it's far better for it! Oh dear we're not going to get any new features. So what! Why leave because of that? I just don't see the point in leaving any community for lack of new features. If your friends are here and the community leaves on, then stay?
- Kol Tregaskes
I think, however, a statement from the FF team is well over due. What is FF's future? What is going to happen to it? Will it just be left alone?
- Kol Tregaskes
I wonder which definition of the word 'geek' people use here ...
- Irma Vermaat
Well I class myself as a geek, in fact I doubt there are many people more geeky then me ;-), but I'm still here. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I appreciate the geek community here and like reading the posts, but I don't think they *need* to be here. I thought FF was where you could find like-minded people and have conversations with them, and perhaps get exposed to some not-so-like-minded ideas. I'm a journalist and enjoy the media rooms. There are lots of librarians on here. Hopefully there will be more non-techies for the mix.
- rowlikeagirl
Besides, fkking Twitter is down again. ;O
- rowlikeagirl
I'm with Kol on this one, I think we should be told what sort of future lies ahead for ff, they owe us that, at least...
- Iain Baker
One question, could we have this discussion on Twitter? Try having this discussion without thread, without images and with only 140 characters to play with. On top of that your 'reply-to' can get unlinked depending on where you post from so you lose any kind of thread on Twitter.
- Kol Tregaskes
When GM effectively became "owned" by the Federal Government, did people immediately lock up their GM cars in their garages? Of course not. The cars still ran. And FriendFeed still runs. I challenge anyone to have this conversation on Twitter, or on Google Reader shared items.

And FriendFeed can survive without a "knowledgeable" component. VHS users weren't as "knowledgeable" as Betamax users, but VHS survived for two decades.

John, it certainly wouldn't be as rich on Twitter.
- Kol Tregaskes
The one thing that COULD kill FriendFeed would be server or API failure. Of course, Twitter hasn't been hurt much by this...

And don't get me started on Facebook. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
(for the lulz) ok, so what's the deal with FaceBook, Kol ?
