Yikes - who would want to teach at midnight?! RT @SFU Todays Poll Question: Would you be up for midnight classes? http://www.facebook.com/simonfr...
Don't like "metagenomic islands" term but note content: Metagenomic islands of hyperhalophiles... (BMC Genomics) http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-21...
Our first experience publishing in PLoS ONE was a great one. Love the philosophy. http://www.plosone.org/article...
http://www.plosone.org/article... Note hypothetical proteins conserved in diverse genera in pathogens but not in non-pathogens to date - must study these
Note CRISPRs in genomic islands: http://www.plosone.org/article... CRISPRs likely phage defence against more phage rather than bacterial defence vs phage
@iddux Yes! I showed them pics and described bacteria as being many shapes, but mostly "ball" and "hotdog" like.
Just spoke with my son's grade 1 class about bacteria (good/bad) & got them to put their fingers on petri dishes (will grow up) - what FUN!
I asked my son's grade 1 class what they thought bacteria look like and the first answer was "some sort of yucky shape"
Re: Why Some Women Look Young http://www.plosone.org/article... They should've looked at amount of sleep too. I aged notably once I had a baby (yawn)
Why Some Women Look Young for Their Age (PLoS ONE) http://www.plosone.org/article... - I love the sun so I'll look ancient soon!
The total is in: a record 18ft of snow at Whistler for Nov. That's > half the total usually expected for the entire winter season - wheee!
Map of an archaeal transcriptome (Genome Res) http://genome.cshlp.org/content... Like the differences between archaea vs bacteria discussed
@matthewlaird They mentioned this, but the timing didn't match up and I ended up on the CBC Radio 1 Early Edition which was fun.
Thanks for all the congrats!
Checking out the Micropolitan Museum of microbe portraits http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/micropo... (thanks Wired)
When I have to be out the house @ 5:15 am for a radio interview @ 6, THAT'S when I wish I was on the east coast
Thanks SFU :) RT @sfupamr Congrats to our @fionabrinkman--named one of Canada's "most powerful women"! http://www.sfu.ca/pamr...
Young women, you too can have a family and a great career - go for it! http://www.sfu.ca/pamr...
Toward sustainable infectious disease therapeutics: virulence-associated genes in diverse pathogens (BMC Genomics) http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-21...
Girls, you CAN have a family and a great career - go for it! http://www.sfu.ca/pamr...
Crap (literally) - a sewage main fix being done near my BCCDC office and the building STINKS
@solace76 @whipflash check this out RT @pathogenomenick Quake ported to Flash, wow! http://www.silvergames.com/game...
@phylogenomics Need more anti-infectives/vaccines vs antibiotics so we aren't selecting for resistance so much -lets quit fighting evolution
@phylogenomics Problem is antibiotic resistance occurs within ~10 yrs of developing a new antibiotic - its a loosing battle
Skin bacteria aid in normal healing http://www.cbc.ca/technol... (refers to http://www.nature.com/nm...) - My kids get lots of dirt-bacteria exposure!
@iGenomics In Canada we simply send mail to postal code HOH OHO to reach Santa :)
Need vaccines ramped up too RT @phylogenomics @Talulinha Infectious Disease Experts Call for 10 New Antibiotics by 2020 http://www.sciencedaily.com/release...
@jennifergardy HUGE CONGRATS re getting the Nature of Things gig!!!!!!(hmmm... how many exclamation marks is too much...)
Thanks for all the birthday wishes!
Ohhh I SO want to go diving now! RT @phylogenomics Cool "INVISIBLE OCTOPUS" http://www.youtube.com/watch...
