@Louis Gray - I've been in Hell (still in hell, btw) about College Admissions. If anybody's gotta reason, I have ;) Now I get out of that, and GoGrid billing messes up. Sigh. - Yuvi
“I've been thinking about friendship all week. I've decided that I wouldn't let someone who incessantly attacked another of my friends into my living room. So, why would I do that here on FriendFeed?”
Jay: it's a lot easier to tear down than to build up. Plus, by fighting with people you aggregate attention (everyone in High School pays attention to a fight, but rarely pays attention to the smart kid building a science project). - Robert Scoble
cool rule and analogy... Is that an analogy? I agree with you. No different than phishing for followers is attacking people for the sake of attention and then hoping attention = followers. If everyone was nice... THen everyone else would be nice!! HUH? - Cody Heitschmidt
The only problem with this argument is you can't exactly mimic your real life behavior with your virtual ones. - Muthu Ramadoss
bravos, robert. there is never an excuse for bad manners - Dave Martin
Muthu - Not true in this case you sure as hell can defend and protect those your care about in anysituation - Cody Heitschmidt
Attacks are a cheap way of scoring points and often say more about the attacker then the victim. Like Jay says, it brings attention, but if done simply for that purpose, it can be a difficult ledge to step back from. - Ross Maguire
Depends on the context, I guess. Reasonable people can disagree and have opposing points of view, but repeated ad hominem attacks are simply unacceptable, no? - Andrew Feinberg
I think everyone needs to go outside and breathe some actual air. Maybe see that thing called sunshine all the cool kids are talking about. - Cyndy
Something we all should do. If there were consequences to being mean rather than rewards more people might try being nice. - Summer
Andrew: a disagreement is one thing. I'm talking about something else. Agree. Cyndy: I live in Half Moon Bay. It's overcast right now. And, anyway, I saw enough of the sun this week in Washington DC to last me a month! :-) - Robert Scoble
I think part of the problem is the term "friend". Just because you subscribe to someone's feed doesn't mean you have to like or even respect that person. - Mike Doeff
Mike: I'm talking about real life friends in this post. You know, those kinds of people you've had dinner with and done stuff with and who've been over your house, and all that? But, yes, I'd apply this same test to the people I'm following here on FriendFeed. If I saw someone attacking one of my online friends over and over I'd block them too. It's behavior I don't need in my life. - Robert Scoble
I agree. Who needs the negativity? There's enough of that in the world. Having a respectful difference of opinion is one thing; but a situation where one person constantly attacks other people is not helpful for anyone. It's pointless in person or online. - Cathryn Hrudicka
I agree - online attacking or bickering or arguments are pointless anyways most of the time - having said that I think I've only ever blocked one person on twitter and that was 'cos they were spamming adverts for some sort of crap - Joe Breen
Civility is important in all arenas, but we must remember that there is a difference between online interactions and real life. Humor, etiquette, and context are all things that are radically different online, and as such, do not have the gravity of face-to-face rudeness or niceness. Besides, Twitter and FF are tools, as are many of the people I follow on them ;) See? That joke might not fly IRL. Oh wait... It didn't here either. - Juan Aguilar
Yes, but you can still hear about attackers from others, blocking only works half well. - Jeremiah Owyang
So right. Even if you are having a disagreement, there's basic respect. Either you are building the relationship or you are destroying it. Be honest about that choice, and ask yourself if that's really the kind of person you want to be. If you make the choice to be a jerk, don't go labeling yourself a hero. - Ro (Lilyhill)
Jeremiah: that would work just like it does in my living room. My friends often tell me about people who hate me, attack me, or lie about me to Valleywag. That doesn't mean that I need to let those people into my living room (or get unblocked here on FriendFeed). - Robert Scoble
then again on the flipside it's interesting for us onlookers if/when arrington & scoble argue/attack/bicker. :) - Joe Breen
The lack of truly personal interaction has brought about a lack of civility and too many pointless arguments. - David Z
@David Z: Very astute observation IMO. Amazing how many 'fierce and fiery' folks via email or IM suddenly become very cordial when you get them on the phone, much less have a face to face. - AJ Kohn
I used to think like this when I had a BBS in 1990s. The BBS actually was in my living room so I had no worries about telling people the rules. I learnt then that some people who are reasonable in the "real world" are nutjobs online.. - Stuart Woodward
You are an inspiration to many of us Scoble. - Satya
Fair enough, though for me, FriendFeed is *not* my living room. - Brent Newhall
I agree - there is no reason why people should treat people online differently than they would IRL. Although on the internet it is difficult to behave the same way .. as you may meet people online you would have never met IRL, talk to people would have been too self conscience to talk to, etc. so it gives weak people a place to get all that real life anger out on people they will never meet. which is pretty messed up, but as a former shy girl .. i went through that when I 1st went online a million yrs ago. - Jenz
It depends on your definition of attack. If by attack you mean disagree, even passionately, then I disagree. - Michael Tefft
I've been pondering this myself. But then, I'm zealously guarded about whom I let into my house... I don't necessarily consider FriendFeed on the same level. But I'm very confused about what seem to be 'mixed standards' from folks of late. Like why one sort of attack is deemed "funny" or "keeping it real" and another is just deemed "trollish" when they seem the same to me. It's a very grey area for me. - Lucretia Pruitt

I have a friend who has forwarded his phone to his wife and lets her be his voicemail. He has done this more than once for weeks at a time, and loves it very much. - Tim Wright
@Dewald I couldn't agree more with you. Cellphones are electronic leeches. Voicemail allows us to disconnect ourselves from them when necessary. - Jason Huebel
I use it on my mobile phone. We don't have landlines at the office anymore. I also have it on my home landline, but that's hardly ever used now. People know the best way to get me is via mobile - voice or text, or even twitter DM, which goes to sms anyway. IM is another good way to get my attention. - jjprojects

I don't usually use the word 'never', so we'll just say that I 'hardly ever' listen to vm. - Sonciary Honnoll
No one actually calls me, although I might add that I don't personally like leaving voicemail messages. I e-mail people and people e-mail me - so much easier. - Cyvros/fyc
It gets emailed to me as an mp3. If I don't have your number in my phone, or you use Skype that comes up Unknown Numer or 0000012345 - you go to VM and I'll get an mp3 a minute later. - Aaron Brazell
Love YouMail. Let's you customize message to specific caller, as well as choose from many vanity messages, also selectable by caller. I spend at least 50% of my work day in meetings or conference calls so I have to have VM. - Kevin Shannon
You people are sad ;) Don't you have family members that call you? Doctors confirming appointments? The car repair place? The kids' school? I mean really, I'd prefer to talk to my grandparents on the phone, and if I didn't have voicemail (or if they didn't), I'd miss a lot of things... - Gabe Wachob via twhirl
@Aaron, there is a small ad with the email and transcript - at least I think - it's small enough or non-intrusive enough that I couldn't say for sure. For the voicemail portion, there are no ads that I've ever "heard." I've always been 100% satisfied with it - though please stay away from the corny greetings they offer and do your own. - Vince DeGeorge
Gabe if one of those people calls I call them back. No VM needed. - Robert Scoble
@Vince Some of the vanity messages are OK. I'm partial to the one with Pam and Michael from "The Office". I was considering the one that says "Due to the recent earthquake this call can not be completed", but it might scare the cr@p out of my mother.. - Kevin Shannon

I don't mind voicemail, most people don't bother and text me. Trick is to stay on top of it and not let them pile up, unified messaging is nice. Visual Voicemail is one iPhone feature I did appreciate, when it worked. - Andrew Feinberg
I am completely off of voicemail at work and home, but still access it on my mobile, of course - John McCrea
I use youmail for my cell phone. I would use GrandCentral more if more people called me. - Christian Burns

I am trying to push people towards sending me text, but - Gabe Wachob via twhirl
Rarely does anything go to voice mail any more. Reading these comments makes me wonder why mine are note forwarded to my inbox. I need to do that. - Sal Distefano

540 terabytes doesn't seem all that big. - Louis Gray
It may be bigger than flickr but the pictures are actually used on flickr rather than being locked up to a profile and a few hundred friends. - Rahul Das
it's a lot, especially considering they downsample images. i.e. your 1.2mb jpg gets reduced to 128kb on FB. The original resolution is lost. So 540 TB is a lot of downsampled images! - Mark J. Feldman
Flickr has about 2.5 billion images. - Ole Begemann
I suspect that Gmail has both more images, and more image data. Email is still what many "regular" people use for photo sharing, amazingly. - Paul Buchheit
540TB is puny for 30B images. 19.3KB/photo average. SmugMug has more storage and only ~325M photos. - Don MacAskill
Facebook limits photos to 5Mb each and 50 photos per album, though. - Prolific Programmer
again, I'll pay my yearly fee for Flickr. sorry Facebook. - Andrew Feinberg
Is that photos or images in total? Could be lots of 1-20K png and gifs for apps - Cris Pearson via twhirl
The ratio on comments on my Facebook photos to comments on my Flickr photos is probably about 20:1, despite the ratio of number of Facebook photos to number of Flickr photos being about 1:10. Comments are nice, especially for hacks like me that aren't going to get any attention -- deservedly so -- from the folks on Flickr. - Kirk Kittell
@Andrew: Do I trust them to host my photos? Is that what you mean? Or is that a more general question? - Kirk Kittell
I mean do you trust them to host your photos and not use them without your permission? Their TOS lets them use your information for promotional purposes and sell to advertisers. Flickr lets you choose how your photos are licensed. Think about it. - Andrew Feinberg
I use a non-commercial license on Flickr. However, it's a minor issue to me how Facebook handles the photos. The primary reason I use Facebook to share photos is because I will get some reaction from my contacts. I'd trade that aspect for losing control of a few photos any day. If I wasn't a hack, I might change my stance. But I'm a hack. If I don't share on Facebook, I have no reason to think anyone sees my photos, and that's a loss, I think. - Kirk Kittell
@Andrew Feinberg: I think that's an excellent point, but I think you'd be shocked at how many people just don't care. First, the re-use of their photos isn't important to them, second, they think their photos aren't worth re-using, and third, they think of it as a cost to pay for the free service. I don't get it, but tons of people think that way. - Don MacAskill
Photography for me is a hobby, so I don't care what anyone does with my pictures. Indeed, all on flickr are CC-licensed. - Prolific Programmer
Mine are CC also and have been used by some high-traffic blogs and others. But, the choice to allow that is mine alone. Facebook has enough money and user data, they don't need anything else from me. - Andrew Feinberg
@Andrew - I'd trust Facebook over Flickr, since it's not Flickr's policies you should be worrying about, it's Yahoo's - and they definitely have not been playing nice with Flickr users since they took over ... - cerement
@Prolific Programmer The limit for photo's is 60, 3 pages of 20! - Joe Dawson

Vince, I also love this story, The anime is really touching. But I'm pretty skeptikal about this one could overcome the original anime. Anyway, this is a great story and every summer we cannot live without watching this anime! A MUST watch for everyone, for sure :) - Kenichi Matsumoto
"It is virtually impossible to heel-strike with these shoes on. I thought I'd been incorporating Chi Running in my runs? Oh, so sorry. No. You don't have any appreciation for a soft landing, or picking your feet up, or having a quick cadence until you run with either the Five Fingers or barefoot. If you accidentally heel-strike, you instantly know it, and so do your molars. If anything, wearing these for short runs is a great calf workout." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
