You can't just clip a wireless mic to the guy's shirt? Or just stick an omnidirectional in the middle of the room and use that for audio instead of the one built into the camcorder?
- Gabe
Gabe: it is clear you don't do a lot of videos. Wireless mics regularly fail at the worst possible times and how am I supposed to mic a room when I have to move around? This is why I have Rocky and most of the videos on building43 will be professionally miced.

Shooting video with an on-camera mic is like shooting photos with an on-camera flash. It's great in a pinch, but it's the worst possible way to do it. However, just as you can do great lighting without lots of equipment and assistants, you can do decent sound without an engineer and expensive equipment.

I second gabe on an omni-directional mic.

Gee Robert, that reminds me. Gabe - whatever happened to my wedding photos on gabe.com?
- Robert Felty
Rob, we've had some difficulty with 'Gabe.com' - I'll hassle Gabe to post them on the flickr account.

I don't shoot video professionally because it's hard work. You have to make sure not to bump/shake the camera, zoom smoothly/slowly/not too often, and keep the camera level. And when using an on-camera mic, you have to be sure not to talk too loudly or jostle that camera in a way that introduces noise.
- Gabe
Robert, just cause Gabe doesn't shoot video doesn't mean it's not a valid point. I don't recall what you use to shoot, but having a good omni directional mic can't hurt. I've seen people who velcro an omni mic to their arm pointing toward their subject, so they still have both of their hands free.

why not get a couple of wired lavaier mics? and use an external recorder (in a small backpack) and sync the video with the sound after
