I think this is a good thing, allows more people to commonly use retweeting
- Alvin
I think several things need to happen. 1. Twitter might as well leave RT, @ as is, but ... 2. there certainly MUST be, and ought to be, Facebook and Friendfeed style commenting on tweets. ... 3. Twitter absolutely needs to allow more than 140 chars, no question about that. Leave 140 as a head, then the rest, text or pix, wrap it up under an automatic 'more' link... this is a crucial, survival test thing for Twitter .... http://friendfeed.com/web24

This has been the key to all worlds, past and present, and yes, it'll be the future too.
- Patricia
Yet the ideal of most is to find/create a giant reservoir of resources and drain it for their own gain. Giving good for evil or "value production" isn't all that popular.
- Todd Hoff
Yes. give more than you receive and it comes back 10 fold.

This should be told to the children in school from the very beginning :)

I can never shake the idea that thinnest = fragile. But my 17 inch notebook is too heavy and I hesitate to carry it around, so I understand the attraction. I *wish* someone made a 15" again with a 1920x1600 res screen again, I'd buy *that*
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
What use is any 17 inch laptap? Too big to be portable and too small to be a useful desktop.
- Brian Sullivan
@kenton do they? excellent news! IBM/lenovo used to but they stopped, because screen size seems to be what people buy, not resolution (that's why you cant find a 17" LCD monitor at 1920x1600 Or even a 19". As you can guess i dont like pixels i can see)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Yeah, can't say this is on my list to buy
- Benny Wong
@joelle I think you need to go to the Studio line with a 256MB video card. Nice screens too, very similar to new Macbooks for colour and contrast.
- Kenton
found them - shame there's no higher graphics card option, but that's a pretty neat package for the price. --tip toes out of hijacked mac topic--
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
0.98 inches. Shorter is the new better?
- Chris Messina
Not for me. Tiny low priced netbooks are hot and apple introduces a $3000 17 inch laptop. Go figure.
- Shannon Carver
Maybe SUVs will make a comeback too.
- Steve Rubel
As long as a laptop is portable, I could give a crap about how thin it is. Rather have more function, lack of limitations, good performance, connectability as a priority. Wouldn't kick it out of bed though.
- Kevin Leroux
Title's wrong... it's the "world's thinnest 17" laptop", not the "world's thinnest laptop."
- Wade Dorrell
GET THEE BEHIND ME, SPARKY!.........(wait, that's not how i meant it....forget i said that....)
- Live4Emma (L4S)
@igor...what do you mean "Mona"? Mona N? I think we're having a spat...over BASKETBALL of all things....she's threatened divorce...i'm broken up about it... *leh sigh*
- Live4Emma (L4S)
Hmm, nice to know, I just reinstalled XP on my 3 year old AMD Athlon computer last night. Maybe can try with Windows 7? Thought that older hardware was not supported. As for i486DX that the author mentions in the article, I highly doubt it :) I did manage to get Windows 98 running I think but that was it!
- Alvin
i tried to vote and it says i've already voted for someone in that category today, even though i hadn't. not sure why this is happening. could the site be registering votes from multiple users in the same household as votes from the same user?
- Jessie
I voted for FF in all three categories (but I arrived at this post via Google Reader. :))
- Sean McBride
I voted for all three, even though I have no idea what the criteria is for being a good startup founder. Y'all seem awfully nice and down to earth, so that's a good thing.
- Laura Norvig
I voted, I voted, and I voted. You better win, win, and win. Oh yeah, and kudos for the nominations!
- Pete Delucchi
I love Friendfeed... But I think user voting means Friendfeed is virtually guaranteed victory in all 3 categories. Friendfeed is a social app where you can reach out to most of its users and ask them for votes, something which the other nominees cannot do. For e.g. I seriously doubt whether most of the Dropbox users have even heard of something called the Crunchies.
- Nikhil Dandekar
An inbox for everyone, that wants to buy into their suite totally. In order for Ovi to be a big success in the US, it has to be more than a one-way door. Google gets it, Nokia does not, yet, despite all their talk about being open.

you can be conversational with twitter in close and small circle or in a short time-span. Without it, goodluck speaking to the wind :D. If only I can persuade my circle to FriendFeed
- Toni @ NavinoT
I rarely use twitter for coversations for the same reasons as you Dave. But some use it as if it's chat, and their tweets are generally unintersting and unintelligible.
- Todd Brunner
from twhirl
I am with you 100% on that Dave. For conversation I try to use Friend Feed or Plurk. Facebook kind of works for that except that I despise Facebook and only check it a few times a week. :D
- MarkCarras
I would love to bring my favorite Twitter followers to FF. No question.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Dave - you might want to take a look at Stowe Boyd's post on Tweetree (allows for threaded convos on Twitter): http://tinyurl.com/725c7f

Every new technology is going to have to handle spam and phishing. I think technology needs to come with a way to integrate measures to remove spam and phishing from starting, rather than deal with it later before it becomes too late. Yes, sure users need to be careful, but technology should also be able to prevent phishing from happening. Just like how with blogging, you have captchas, something similar is needed here as well.
- Alvin
I really like Bank of America's SiteKey where they present an image and catchphrase of your choosing on the log-in form after you enter your user name. I think there was a study a couple years ago that said people didn't pay attention to it, but I don't know how to fix apathy with technology. :oD

"The success of the Commodore 64 was unheard of; it sold 22 million units, the highest number for any single model of a computer in history, according to the Computer History Museum. ... Tramiel himself had a confrontation with Canadian investor Irving Gould and Tramiel resigned on Jan. 13, 1984. The problem with doing a follow-up on the Commodore 64 was due to chaos that followed Tramiel’s departure. To build the next machine, the company had to build everything from scratch."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
I wonder what the "confrontation" was about. From http://www.commodore.ca/history...: "Irving Gould and Jack Tramiel had a successful working relationship until 1984 when an argument that has yet to be fully explained caused Jack Tramiel to quit on the spot." From http://www.scripophily.net/atcorst...: "The nature of their quarrel was never publicly disclosed. Today, however, Tramiel says he wanted to "grow" the company, and Gould didn't."
- ⓞnor
"The Commodore Story" aka "On the Edge" has a whole chapter on Jack Tramiel leaving Commodore. It suggests a couple of theories about the disagreement. One is that Jack wanted his sons to succeed him in running the company, but Gould disagreed. Leonard Tramiel is quoted as saying that this had nothing to to do with Jack leaving.
- Laurence Gonsalves
Jack Tramiel is quoted saying that the issues revolved around financing: "Just because we were a billion-dollar company, we did not have to throw money out the window like a billion-dollar company." and also "I was of the view that we should have made a new stock offering when our shares were highly traded... [Gould] thought this would water down his portion of the company and he would lose influence..."
- Laurence Gonsalves
BTW: The Commodore Story is a great book if you're interested in Commodore and/or computer history in the 70's through 90's. I have a blog post about the book here: http://xenomachina.com/2006... (the book used to be called "On the Edge", but was apparently renamed)
- Laurence Gonsalves
Great article, my first computer I owned and worked on was the Commodore 64 when I got exposed to computers in elementary school. My dad actually wanted me to get an IBM PC Jr, but I wanted a C-64 because the school had it. I'm glad I was one of the people that owned a C-64, and I learned my first programming skills Commodore Basic from the C-64. Thanks Jack Tramiel for the C-64 days!
- Alvin
2nd computer I ever used was a PET, with the chicklet keyboard. (1st was a custom made mutant beast, built from parts donated to my school by Apple)
- April Russo (app103)
I wonder how things would have been different if Jack Tramiel had stayed. Commodore was a big success at the time, but it sometimes seems forgotten when people talk about computer history and Macs, PCs, etc.
- Paul Buchheit
Let's see how it plays out at CES. This is probably Palm's last shot to get back into the game. I'm rooting for Palm to come back because competition is always good for the industry, and I don't want Palm to be wiped off just like the rest of the others in the computer industry.

@Roberto - Finally, a plausible game plan to monetize friendfeed.com/scobleizer
- Mitch
I'm not looking for a place that's *free* of Scoble, just less enslaved.
- Dave Winer
Dave, just unfollow and your chains will be free.
- Michael Krigsman
Yep. Signed for a 30%markup on unsigned ones. :). Not quite an iFart, but close.
- Roberto Bonini
Michael, don't talk to me like I'm an idiot -- I don't like it when people do that.
- Dave Winer
+1 Dave! I'm not even subscribed to you Sir, but I have so much respect for you!
- directeur
Dave, apologies if it came off that way--definitely not my intention.
- Michael Krigsman
Cooooooool. Anyway -- I have unfollowed Scoble. On Twitter that pretty much works, but here -- This is ScobleFeed, The First Church of Scoble is not an overstatement.
- Dave Winer
It actually makes alot of sense what you are saying dave. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I said that in regards to your church of scoble post dave. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Dave: you crack me up. I remember when people talked that way about you and you didn't like it.
- Robert Scoble
So much labia to gluteal activity now days. Just gotta love the power puckerers!
- James D Kirk
Scoble: I'm not going to take the bait on that -- I have unfollowed you, that's a neutral statement, it's not meant to hurt your feelings, or otherwise. That's the way this goes. No one is forced to follow. But, you really do get in my face more than I want. I meant everything I said in today's piece. And it's not aimed at you, or supposed to make you feel bad. This is the problem. Everything here is about you, according to you. I don't like it. I'm not asking you to change anything.
- Dave Winer
But if you want to NOT be the topic of conversation in every which way including ways you don't like, then you should change the way you do things. I'm not going to tiptoe around your ego, esp when you insert it all kinds of places where it doesn't belong.
- Dave Winer
BTW, I didn't like the way you were dealing with me last spring, so I changed my behavior, I never asked you to change.
- Dave Winer
According to Scoble, it's not who follows you, but who you follow. By definition he won't give a crap if someone unfollows him. Just my guess. Robert Scoble in no way has paid for this comment. ;)
- James D Kirk
James +1. I am not holding a gun to anyone's head here. Enslaved? That is a harsh word.
- Robert Scoble
Damn it Scoble. Give me a "-1" immediately, else the whiners of the world will consider that comment an endorsement! :P
- James D Kirk
I always found it interesting the tendency for one person to reduce another person's interest, or agreement with someone else, to brainwashing or mass delusion merely because they disagree with it. If you listen to Robert Scoble or you talk about what he says, you clearly are brainwashed and are a devout member of the Church of Scoble?
- Mark Trapp
Dave, I just blocked you with these reasons. 1. He feels that too much of friendfeed is enslaved to me. So, I freed him from my bonds. 2. He wants a place to post without interruption from me, so I gave it to him because now I won't see his friendfeed posts and be tempted to reply to them. 3. He once told me he blocks anyone who says that they are unfollowing him to "save them the...

Actually I said no one needs to suffer. You're totally within your rights to block me and I wish you the best! It still won't solve my problem, because the ScobleSphere is bigger than Scoble. :-(
- Dave Winer
@Robert: MySpace I'll buy but I'm thinking you just meant you don't use Live.com for search...because you do, in fact, have a Live.com profile! It's right here: http://is.gd/eo9b - and you already have 41 people in your network! You work fast! :-)
- Sarah Perez
Sarah: yeah. But I don't use it much. I have a myspace page too.
- Robert Scoble
is the problem with friendfeed - that there are insufficient options for selective viewing - or the problem that people find scoble interesting?
- Franz Sittampalam
I don't know this may seem way out there, but you all might want to actually you know, read the piece. It actually says that Scoble is right and the other guys are wrong. Funny how one might actually miss that you know, if you know you didn't you know read the you know actual piece. http://bit.ly/P0CR
- Dave Winer
shedali: actually I am a social media fungus. I am everywhere Dave Winer doesn't want me to be. But glad we can get back to something more interesting like whether Steve Jobs is still making cool product or not.
- Robert Scoble
Jobs? Is he still alive? I thought I heard he died and was turned in yogurt.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Jack: that just proves that you can break news by both eating yogurt and friendfeeding, doesn't it?
- Robert Scoble
@Robert - sure, we all have abandoned MySpace pages :) but the home.live.com thing is still kinda new soooo....anyway, it's cool that you set it up with your Twitter info 'cause I can see the tweets from my network in my Live Messenger window...that's handy
- Sarah Perez
@Sarah - I agree the new home.live.com is very cool....
- Amar Shah
Dave: people read the post. The issue is that the most interesting portion of the post was in the first paragraph, where you launched into a diatribe about how much you can't stand Scoble being everywhere. It didn't relate to the rest of your post, but you chose to put it out there anyway. You really don't get to control what portions of what you put out in public people react to.
- Mark Trapp
Dave: I'll bet most of the folks repsponding here probably did read your post, and are just responding the first seemingly unrelated "#" where you wish you didn't see so much of Robert, rather than the rest of it where you weigh in on the Arrington/Calacanis v Scoble kerfuffle.
- Ken Sheppardson
I haven't seen Scoble show up in the "Really Gay Room" yet. Maybe Dave would feel more comfortable hanging out there.. ;-)
- Jeff P. Henderson
I don't think that blogging will die away anytime soon, but that blog frequency will decrease as more people lifestream. I know for me that I certainly do not read many blogs in my RSS feed reader anymore, as I now look to Friend Feed for getting the latest updated news. I also don't publish as often to my blog unless I want to say something that requires more than 140 characters or...

and to think we are arguing about whether bootstrapped startups are going to thrive or die in 2009. I would walk away from all my work and live in a tent for my wife and family if it came down to it... it's just not worth it. I worked for years as a firefighter and EMT and have seen more than my fair share of death and crazy things. Whenever I get stressed at work I think about doing CPR on someone with their family watching... all of a sudden puts things into perspective. life is precious, and too short.
- Scott Lockhart
That is similar to they types of sacrifices Americans had to deal with during the depression and WWII. That is what made the US strong. This generation and the last has not seen hardship like our Grandparents did. Most Americans have no idea what real hardship and service to ones country is. We as a nation have gotten soft, lazy and complacent.
- Jeff P. Henderson
If the Americans do not discover what is really important, we as a nation are doomed to be second class citizens in the 21st century in the world that we created in the early 20th century.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I believe many of the world changing ideas will come from alternative energy/green start ups developing all kinds of new energy storage and energy generation and lighting technologies.

This is exactly what I wanted you to focus on 4 months ago when we were headed downward. Glad to see you focused on this now.

Why Twitority sucks - I am currently listed as the top expert on Myers-Briggs. Why? Because I mentioned it in a tweet. - http://twitority.com/search...
If I mention random infrequently-used phrases in tweets (even if I don't know a lot about them), perhaps Twitority will endow me with additional expertise.

Everyone interested in weather controlling devices should subscribe to me, Twitority claims I'm an authority on them! http://twitority.com/search...

Presumably a human reader can tell the gamers from the truly knowledgeable, but what of one who FAKES authority? Granted this can and does happen IRL also.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
I think you're making an incorrect assumption in that people will be able to find someone authoritative on a topic by searching Twitter. 140 simply isn't enough. Twitter's the wrong medium for searching for experts.
- trextor
How does Twitority identify an authority? That must be a guarded secret algorithm? Trextor, I think FriendFeed is better suited for searching for experts, are there any FriendFeed search tools? I've seen many Twitter tools.

Om's post has (to date) 1 comment on the blog itself, but 6 likes and now 1 comment here on friendfeed.

Great, this gives me another social networking paper to read, thanks Om! Shows you the most relevant information can be retrieved from FriendFeed, even for research!

that's kind of a given you don't need a blog entry on such an obvious notion
