I made it a point to stay away from Youtube comments. Like an idiot, I went to my Youtube folder (where I filter all Youtube messages) and looked at the latest entry. See what I mean?

from email
Youtube's saving grace is the Inbox. I get great comments and questions in there. But the comments? It's like flypaper.
- Bwana ☠
Make the world idiot proof, the world will make a better idiot..ce la vie !!
- Peter Dawson
I wish this didn't happen, but it does. What are the options to report these people, and do you think it would do any good?
- Louis Gray
You can report spam and ToS violations on a per comment basis, and there's a bury mechanism, but YouTube is so vast it's a losing battle. It's a shame to see communities written off as they get popular.
- Mark Trapp
It's definitely at the point where you get 25 awful comments for every decent one on Youtube. For some reason it is the outlet for the worst of human-kind.
- Kevin Bondelli
Mark is right. Generally, the community buries the seriously obscene comments, but sometimes, you get a group of idiots who actually rate up insipid comments. I rarely get any negative comments in my inbox so it's generally people looking for attention.
- Bwana ☠
I don't think I have seen a single useful comment ever on youtube.. best bet, disable comments entirely. Do they even have an approval mechanism to approve comments before they are posted?
- Tim Hoeck
Wow, what a jackass. I hardly ever read YouTube or Digg comments. I guess I am not missing much.
- mace
Tim, they do have an approval mechanism. I use it for my really popular videos which attract spammers. But generally, it becomes a chore to manage the comments over time.
- Bwana ☠
Nice Fish Films, the sad part is it's not just YouTube nut, I say just disable comments but the problem is they might get smart and figure out how to send you a comment

I bet you the offending dumb-douche is only like 16

that is grotesque. notice, though, how poorly he constructs his thoughts... he seems semi-retarded. that's something, at least. he's not going to go much of anywhere with that brain.
- edythe
There should be a firefox plugin to filter boderline psychosis. Then again, it might just block YouTube entirely...
- Steve Spalding
its sad that some people have to do things like that. yeah i never read youtube comments. a firefox plugin to just hide them would be nice.
- (jeff)isageek
I think that ideology applies to a lot of mediums, Digg and Techcrunch included.
- Vincent van Wylick
*sigh* I know your pain. This guy is just as much a coward as he is ignorant. The few Youtube postings that I have, I turned the commenting off.
- Darrell Bell
OMG this is HORRIBLE ... yikes, my gut is churning after reading that crap... wow, this is soooo not right. what an ignorant jerk!! augh!! They need to block @$$es like that
- Susan Beebe
One more thing that I think is relevant to the discussion... Sites like Youtube cater to the lowest common denominator. There are in the business of getting the most content and the most viewership. They are not in the business of moderation (outside of porn vids and things down that line). I would not be surprised if they felt like if they were tighter with the restrictions, they would alienate people from their service. Thoughts?
- Darrell Bell
i do my part on those comments by downgrading them and also reporting them as spam.
- Chris Harris
I am constantly surprised by the quality of comments on YouTube.
- kamla bhatt
Disgusting. I think this may be more prevalent on YouTube because of the medium. I would hazard that the level of literacy for the average YouTube viewer is likely lower than the Internet average.
- AJ Kohn
(I should ask in advance that you all pardon my French, as they say) I'm almost convinced that fragging such users' accounts for spamming is only encouraging them. YouTube should install a Hide feature, a la FF. That way, the mouth-breathing cretins, batshit lunatics, and shameless attention whores--into all three of which groups this winner seems to fit--can amuse each other to their hearts' content, and the grownups can get back to enjoying our videos.
- Derrick Burns
I wish I could say this was shocking, but it's all too common, unfortunately. YouTube is the Tourette Syndrome of the Internet...
- Vince DeGeorge
yeah they have had to make a very sturdy sign for the town because so many English speaking tourists have stolen it in the past- they even considered changing the name of the town a few years back.
