"Hey Rachael, Thanks very much for the tip - I didn't realise that was something that should be avoided but makes a lot of sense to not draw attention to the interpreting process. Very interesting."

"Hi Simon - is this on a Dell Mini 10v? These instructions are only applicable to that device. The only suggestion I can make is to give the netbook Internet access using a wired connection and run the update manager to get the latest updates. Failing that I'd recommend getting advice from the Ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/) or reporting the problem to the Ubuntu team (https://help.ubuntu.com/communi...) - they should be able to help. I'm definitely no expert :) Good luck!"

"Interestingly, I don't have that option checked and I can connect to wireless networks with no problems - I assume this means the ability to connect to new ones which presumably prompts for root access. By the way, the root account is generally locked in Ubuntu and so when it asks for you to enter a password for admin purposes, it's your own account password and it's trying to run sudo. See https://help.ubuntu.com/communi... for details."

"Worth noting that with Karmic, any entry in /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/ will appear permanently in the indicator applet. It seems that if the description is visible (from the .desktop file) then the app is not running and when the app is started (i.e. the server is created), the description disappears. I believe the ultimate plan is for users to be able to customize a bit more this themselves. Maybe this is what you're seeing?"

"No problem - glad it helped! As for removing the server item, does server.hide() work? I haven't tried it lately but I have a feeling I used that previously. You could also try removing all references to the server instance so the object is destroyed. Let me know how you get on."

"I've only seen what I've written in this article but someone did mention to me that other people have had different wireless problems with the Dell Minis and Ubuntu 9.10. Why do you need to install the desktop version? Can you install the Netbook Remix version and then install the ubuntu-desktop package on top?"

"I didn't understand the point of the fingerspelling alternative and unfortunately Brad didn't provide any extra information. As for fingerspelling practise, the productive stuff you can do by just fingerspelling words in a book or on TV or something. The receptive stuff is a bit harder but Signature provide a few videos you can watch which will contain a variety of fingerspelling (http://www.signature.org.uk/shop...). There must be a few other content producers too but probably best to go with the official ones! Other than that, you could try searching for BSL videos on YouTube - there might be some stuff people have created that happen to contain fingerspelling. All good practise to see real people signing, particularly those who are fluent obviously."
