"Well, the blog has suffered, as you can see from the lack of recent posts... But I have to get my act together, at the current rhythm of work I`ll explode in a few weeks!" - Garrido
"Hi Korben, sorry for not replying earlier to your comment, but for some reason I can't see the video. At first I thought it was something with Seesmic, but I can see my own video posts embedded elsewhere in the blog... Really don't know what's going on here, sorry about that - as soon as I get it working I'll send you a proper reply!" - Garrido
great job loic and the twhirl team!! - Morgan
via twhirl
Great: rooms, auto-throttling - Not so great: FF posts take up so much room, less posts are visible at the same time - Can't wait for Seesmic support! - Garrido
via twhirl
Loic - First impressions are fantastic - Ed Dale
via twhirl
its there and update feature to twhirl or do I need to download and re-install? - rambn
Hey - I like it! Could you add support for opening a new tab when right clicking links? I hate how it overrides my current page! - Zach Landes
via twhirl
I really like the new FF features. Can't wait to see Seesmic added to the mix. - Dana Franks
via twhirl
I'm ready to say that this is the first version of Twhirl with FF that I am willing to use, actually. - ∵JPGlockner∴
via twhirl
Tony, Seesmic is coming in a few weeks. Morgan thanks, Garrido it is coming, Ed thanks, rambn yes auto update close it you will see, Zachary working on that, Dana me too!, Marco yes Marco rocks, Josiah thanks, Dave it is not in this one, thanks Sam, Danish and Tom - Loic Le Meur
via twhirl
I am a big fan of Twhirl and it keeps getting better - Mark Nassal
via twhirl
WOWOWOWOW ... You guys are putting your release schedule on steriods! code monkies!!! I like all the new feature improvements! keep up the good work! - Susan Beebe
This caused me to dump alert thingy even though there are differences. Always liked Twhirl too bad it has picked up some hiccups from Twitter which is already the meme of legend in these parts... - Mark Forman
I'm in! This will def cause me to use friend feed more. - Evan Travers
via twhirl
This is a nice feature. Just upgraded to the new version to use this. But your blog is never unblocked by the Great Firewall here. - Jianjun Zhang
via twhirl
Comments inline work well, but make it hard to keep a track of whats going on. I guess thats more of a FF issue tho, nested conversations are much more complex than the flat twitterlike comments. - Steve Mactaggart
via twhirl
I guess I'm getting used to it - without doubt, it's an improvement, thnx Loic and Marco - Garrido
via twhirl
and try the pic share feature, it takes a few seconds to do what really looks like like a short blog post, a pic, a text and a link et voila! - Loic Le Meur
Loic, great update to twhirl, clean interface, more intuitive - Ralph Poole
via twhirl
Nice update! Is there any shortcuts for Twhirl?? - Alex Sauceda
via twhirl
still trying to get my head around friend feed in twhirl.... - djp
via twhirl
Still not like the interface. Still not see the reason why we need a specific app for friendfeed. Some stuff could be sorted via a easy firefox extension e.g. notification. - Benjamin Kohler
via twhirl
I'm not sure about this, but my main concern.. why does my FF feed in Twhirl look almost completely different than what I see on the web? Am I the only one seeing this? - felix
Love the new changes - a few issues still with the commenting. It remembers the past comment when I write a new one instead of clearing the box, and it also clears out my comment box every time the feed refreshes. - Jesse Stay
via twhirl
Nice work! Loving the improvements! - Lon
via twhirl
well - i´m still not sure, if I should prefer AlertThingy or Twhirl ;) - Dieter Schwarz
via twhirl
Really digging the reduced memory usage. Before twhirl would growto over 500MB and now it's pretty steady at 150MB or so. Thanks! - Jauder Ho
via twhirl
Just updated and not sure I like how much extra room the ff window takes up. I don't get to see a lot of posts at the best of times. - Steve Mactaggart
via twhirl
Let's see if I get used to it, but seeing less comments at a time is bothering me right now - Garrido
via twhirl
A nice update, but need the ability to expand and shrink the comment sections for each item. - Jordan
via twhirl
It does that with the little '+' symbol and the nice scroll bar...i'm a fan - Marc Vermut
via twhirl
The best FF rooms support in a third-party app is probably our FF XMPP bot - Wil
via MojiPage Bot
when everything falls into place (ie seesmic XMPP, etc) twhirl will be hard to be. hell I might actually use seesmic then. and hey plurk has an API now *hint* - BCK
via twhirl
Twhirl needs to put all these services in one window where I switch between them with tabs. - Alex P.
via twhirl
I totally agree w/ the tab comment - having the 2 windows open gets cluttered. - Adam Bullied
via twhirl
yeah single window with tabs would be nice ... well one can dream right? - JohnBfromMemphis
via twhirl
cmon y'all let's give them some breathing room for making such terrific improvements already...not like i'm gonna code an update - Marc Vermut
via twhirl
Great decision with the acquisition Loic, hope you already know how to deal with copyrighted content over there :) - Svetlana Gladkova
Svetlana, yes, I found a solution with copyrighted content on Google, we will turn off video upload on YouTube. - Loic Le Meur
Loic, I hope you aren't going to turn it all off, I like some of the things over there especially the record companies who put up there content for people to listen to and enjoy!! - Paul
Of course... everything should be filmed real-time! Even the copyrighted material... :) - directeur
Dave are you buying Youtube too? Ah. We're competing then, we should talk to try not to make the acquisition price not go too high. - Loic Le Meur
I offered them $82 billion, maybe I should try lowering the offer? - Dave Plumber Winer
Let's see, I've got a dime, a penny and a piece of gum with pocket lint all over it. Can I buy a share? - Jack Carlson
Dave, you are definitely pushing the prices too high, not good for any of us, let's agree on the right market value. I am happy to leave it to you if you do a good API I can work on. - Loic Le Meur
That's all very well, but you can't expect to tell your users how to use your system - be sure that they will use it whichever way they think works for them, even if it's not how you originally intended - Garrido
via twhirl
The moment you measure something, people will compete, just because. - Morton Fox
It's not about followers, it's about participation. Leo Laporte has over 1000 invited friends and 1600 friends and has a low karma. Why? He Plurks about once or twice a day. Those with high karma can have a low friend count. In my mind, the karma is a brilliant way to keep loyal users. It worked for the Xbox 360 and their achievement system and I think it'll work here. It's not for everyone however, that I can agree with. - Bwana McCall
I need only point to this plurk: http://www.plurk.com/p/1tnp to highlight the serious problems with Plurk. Plurk is like Gillmor's worst nightmare on steroids. - Mark Trapp
The problem is that in order to raise there Karma people reply with mindless bullshit rather than anything meaningful. Hiding behind the "loves" "hates" "feels" labels totally fuels the "bullshit" fire as well. It's just one massive excuse to say absolutely nothing. - Andrew Dobrow
Gillmor would implode if he got within 10 miles of Plurk, lol - Bwana McCall
Plurk is definitely more social and the current crowd that I see is less techy. Very few people are pimping their blogs and new posts. I agree with a blog post that I read that said, Twitter = ego, Plurk = fun. - Bwana McCall
You know what else grinds my gears about Plurk (while we're airing grievences :-P); the people who ask to be your friend, provide no identifiable information, and when you deny or ignore their request, they keep requesting over and over, with no recourse. I've had 3 people keep requesting to be my friend: I'm not your karma whore, back up off me plurkers! - Mark Trapp
Plurk would be fun if there was some sort of rhyme or reason to the annoying refreshing responses. Some sort of filter. - Andrew Dobrow
Pretty soon they will figure out that Karma is mostly driven by plurking and not adding friends Mark :) - Bwana McCall
Forget the Karma, I could live with that. But the noise-to-signal ratio is just... there are no words. - Andrew Dobrow
Andrew, my techniques is that I add everyone initially, if they get on my nerves, then I got my friends list and turn off timeline updates for them. I think most of the topics discussed may not be tailored for most of the Twitter crowd. Right now, it's just a giant goof off session, but I think as the community grows and "cliques" form, it'll work itself out. It's already surpassed Pownce in traffic (well, with Alexa numbers) - Bwana McCall
It's just not worth it to me. I don't feel like it's worth my time or that it's doing anything for me. I can get the same sort of banter somewhere else in a much less annoying fashion. - Andrew Dobrow
@Bwana but once everyone figures out plurking gives you karma, there will be "I'm eating a cheese sandwich" plurks. I know I don't always have the most interesting or thought provoking things to say, but I try not to post, just to post. - Michelle Martinez
Paul, your comment is why I wish there were "likes" for comments. Though the services are way different, my time is better served on FF. - Andrew Dobrow
I don't think the Karma rewards will drive people to go that far, but yes, with every point "system" there will be some who attempt to game the system. They will promptly get removed from my timeline. - Bwana McCall
Yes that is why I like it better no goof off possible or people will hide you forever'!! - Paul
There are far better ways to get the same sort of annoying banter and lightning-round responses. I could go to my Grandma's house for that, but at least I'd get some free food out of the deal. - Andrew Dobrow
Plurk is like a gang-rape of the brain. - Andrew Dobrow
So Andrew, how do you really feel? :) - Bwana McCall
I think they need to adapt. Adapt to the new crowd they have pouring in. For me, it's unusable how I want to use it. - Andrew Dobrow
who needs to adapt? Plurk? Or the senseless dribble that you have in your timeline? :) - Bwana McCall
Plurk needs to adapt and allow me to filter the dribble and to not get deluged with response refreshes without using the damn mobile site. - Andrew Dobrow
Plurk is insulting to my intelligence and the UI is really problematic to say the least. EPIC FAIL!! - Susan Beebe
So in short, you don't like the timeline view? - Bwana McCall
No... I love the timeline view. I think it has great potential and it's unique, but there is something about it that is just so damn grating. It's the whole response thing. Something about it makes me close the tab just so my head doesn't explode. I don't need a notification for every response for everyone's messages. - Andrew Dobrow
I believe the UI is one thing, but Plurk is about who you follow..much like other services. If the timeline is "noisy" I think you don't want to read it which means you're following people you shouldn't be. I agree the UI isn't for everyone, but the people part I think you can control. - Bwana McCall
I don't like the fonts, the UI accessibilty and usability, I decided some years ago that i won't use any website that doesn't make few efforts to be accessible and usable. That's my choice :) - directeur
lastnight i just sat there watching the "responses" go up and only the "popular people get all the action again with the "sheep" mentality - Caroline
There are gems in the noise: For example, Wayne Sutton has been asking great questions that spark discussion. He's started a question of the day on Plurk which has been successful. I can't stress enough, it's about who you follow and who you show on the timeline. directeur is right, it is about choice and I respect those who hate the UI. I've done the same in the past. - Bwana McCall
Also, let it be known that the Digg crowd has made its way to Plurk. - Bwana McCall
What can I say, it's just not for me. It's one of those fad services. The love will pass when the noise becomes too much to bare. And then there will be the opposite problem. You'll hear pins drop. - Andrew Dobrow
You know the exact same thing was said about Twitter. Just sayin is all :) "It's a fad site that won't last a year." We'll see :) These sites rise and fall like the wind and I'm always there to be a part of it all. I love it. - Bwana McCall
I'm calling that six months down the road, no one gives a shit about Plurk other than die hard users. If it succeeds, all the power to them. But how it is now, is not for me. For all we know, they could have been behind http://twistori.com - Andrew Dobrow
Bwana McCall: I myself loved twitter from the first sight, I'm not into big social interraction I confess, I'm on IRC most of the time or geeking arround with other stuff. But I liked the minimalism in twitter, It does this, this way, input output, clear, easy, it's a product finally :) - directeur
I saw the same benefit in Twitter. It was totally text based and I know how flexible it can be. The thing I see in Plurk is not necessarily what I like, but what this upcoming generation likes. Sites like Kongregate.com thrive on the same notion that Plurk is on. The Xbox 360 took the console lead by implementing a genius achievement and gamerscore system. These kids like competition and will be loyal to it. - Bwana McCall
Heh... I'm old fashioned (dixit John Coltrane) :) - directeur
exactly this is an internal test release with more Friendfeed options in Twhirl I love them so far, actually you get rooms support but can't share in a room yet. - Loic Le Meur
via twhirl
Great to see more developers integrationg rooms into FF apps. http://www.fftogo.com/ got support for rooms (reading/commenting/sharing) just a few days ago. - Benjamin Golub
via fftogo
can't wait and get my mouse on the new Twhirl. A can't do without app - Eric Sausse
via twhirl
So when can we expect this to be released to the public? - Garrido
I can't go along with it. "Boycott" like "strike" has a ring to it that I don't like. There's an ugly militant-ness to it that doesn't set well with me. - Brad McCrorey
@Brad I get that -- but I don't sense anyone of us participating is hoping this will hurt Twitter in anyway. As Andrew says, it's "tough love". - Shey
More importantly, we don't WANT to bring Twitter down or leave it. We love Twitter. We just want to see some changes made to the infrastructure. - Andrew Dobrow
I suppose I'm just not the "activist" type. There are a few things about this whole thing that I either don't "get" or don't like. The point that sean reiser made about this really accomplishing very little rang very true with me as well. It seems pointless, aside from promoting the people who are promoting the strike itself. - Brad McCrorey
There has also been a friendly debate / conversation between myself and Chris Anthony on Sean Reiser's blog, which you can see here in the comments: http://seanreiser.com/node/143... - Andrew Dobrow
Yeah, I've seen that. I like it. Sean's really re-affirming my position, and giving me more reason to avoid this whole thing. - Brad McCrorey
How does the boycott hurt Twitter. Will they make less $ that day if we don't use it. NO! It's a free service. - Kevin Shannon
Once again, it's not about hurting Twitter at all. If the goal was to hurt them, it would be totally reverse spite, since I LOVE Twitter. All it's about is sending a community message to Twitter that something should be done for those situations, in respect to the community. At the very least, there should be a "We're working on the problem" type page, rather than just a purely dead server. It's a matter of treating the community with some respect. - Andrew Dobrow
Sorry but I still don't really get this. First has anyone added up the real DOWN time over the past, let's say 6 months and figure out what the UP time is? My guess is more than 99%. I guess if you're on it constantly it seems worse. Years ago DirectTV made a satellite change that caused MS Ultimate TV boxes to start having problems. When I called to complain they said they were not aware of a problem. I went on a DirectTV discussion board and hundreds of people were having the same.problem....... - Kevin Shannon
...... they never admitted the issue. Never said sorry. Never refunded any money. In fact they insisted my boxes were broken and needed to be replaced with new Tivo boxes. And I pay them $130 a month for their service. - Kevin Shannon
Brad, my approach is as follows (see the http://mrontemp.blogspot.com/2... URL): "I'm not under any illusion that on Thursday, May 22, all of Twitter's downtime problems will be solved and they will communicate all issues to us within seconds (instead of days). I'm more interested in this from a user interface point of view - if Twitter were to disappear, how much stuff would I be able to accomplish with FriendFeed?" - Ontario Emperor
@Kevin Interesting. Was just about to Call DirecTv for overbilling. Hmm - Charlie Anzman
@Kevin it depends on how much you Twitter. e.g. it's a big deal when your internet is down or your site/blog is down for an hour. Not so much if the cable tv is out, right? - Shey
I'm all for it, moving to Pownce + FriendFeed on the date - Garrido
via twhirl
I'm thinking that all FriendFeed needs to do is to add an always-present text box on the main page with a button that expands the function of that box to share links or images. If the box is there and a few lines tall, people will start using it like it was Twitter. Right now, no one treats FF like Twitter because the 'Share something' function seems to imply you have to share a link and not just some text. - Akiva Moskovitz
The good thing about this is now with FriendFeed we can tansfer to Pownce or Jaiku, and not lose any touch with FriendFeed contacts. We are no longer tied to Twitter because everybody else is there. - ◄ Chris Nixon ►
Akiva: They could always change the "Share something" box to "Share anything" ;-) Garrido and Chris: That's great that you guys have a plan for Twit-Out. FriendFeed integrates all of those services which makes it a perfect spot to congregate. - Andrew Dobrow
“Did you know you could share pics, links and text on FriendFreed using Twhirl? Try it and let us know what you think, we are working hard to have the best client experience, suggestions welcome!”
Suggestion #1. Release a version that merges Twitter and FriendFeed in a single window. All other features should be held off until this has been completed. - Mark Krynsky
Am I the only one who thinks they shouldn't be merged. I like keeping them distinct - Deepak
@Deepak, if done elegantly I think you'd be ok. For instance, a toggle button to swtich from either service would be nice. The challenge on a merge is that I follow folks on Twitter that don't have FF accounts and conversely I follow users on FF who I don't on Twitter. So handling the Tweets from these 2 types of users may be a bit challenging. - Mark Krynsky
with the comment about merging Friend Feed and Twitter... although have AlertThingy already! - Laura Whitehead
via twhirl
I like Twhirl but I can't use it because it won't remember my login info, every time I load it I have to enter everything again.I have uninstalled and reinstalled 10 times and no luck. I posted something on getsatisfaction.com and no answer. - Kelly Johns
I think they should remain separate, too. I'm not enough of a fan of FriendFeed to want them merged. However, I would like a way to keep tweets of people I follow on Twitter from appearing in the FriendFeed window. Right now, I see the tweets twice; once in each window. - Gregory Pittman
It should show you entries from the last time you started it only, so I don't re-read old posts. - Ranjit Mathoda
I second the request for a status-aware version that only shows new entries. No need to re-read old tweets. And **please** keep twitter separate, or at least enable an option to keep twitter/friendfeed separate. - Kevin Donahue
I like the fact that I can keep twitter/ff separate, but an option to combine them would be nice. Plus, right now commenting on FF works much better in alertthingy. - Will Johnston
via Alert Thingy
having both open in twhirl is pretty much awesome (when they are both up) - Chris Jones
via twhirl
Merging would be great, but only if it would automatically de-dupe at the same time. - Chuck Lawson
I prefer them merged in one window. Agree comments are easier in Alert Thingy. - Sally Church
Thanks for asking Loic! I too like the idea of merging, but add the *option* of having 2 windows merged into 1, but maintain current functionality (let folks choose this). DeDuping would be a must for the merged option. Alternately have 1 window with 2 TABS - for twitter or friendfeed. - Susan Beebe
Loic, now if only it didn't have two screens..... - Duncan Riley
I with you would allow for scrolling within a post to get to more comments when they are over a page long - Sweyn
I am not sure about the merged window. I like being able to keep the streams separate. FF would push twitter content offscreen too fast. As an option? Sure. What I DO want is an option to reply to FF about a tweet right from the twitter stream - Soulhuntre
For one it would be great if it didn't delete my FF post while I'm writing when it updates. I prefer the separate windows as well over a merged one. Tabs could work but only up to a point. My suggestion is to use some contextual UI that could include having just one single window with an update bar to show the user which services have new entries. The user could then click on the items in the bar and open the respective feed. I like the idea of separation but I don't think a window for each service is the answer given the limits of screen space. - Devlin Dunsmore
via twhirl
Perhaps the update bar could show/hide itself only either when it has updates or when the user mouses over a particular part of the window. That way the navigation is only temporary but reveals itself either on demand or when it is relevant to the user. - Devlin Dunsmore
via twhirl
I'm not a fan of Thwirl's UI. Too much clutter. Who came up with the color scheme? Click targets (buttons) are too small. - Ole Begemann
nothing for me beats visiting the website itself at the moment - Ian Rathbone
@sebmos just like seesmic, functional but as ugly as sin - Duncan Riley
I like Twhirl and don't find it ugly at all! Just my 2p. - laurence timms
via twhirl
@sebmos Tru the different color schemes, I never use the default - Garrido
via twhirl
wew that is a lot of feedback thank you all so much! - Loic Le Meur
I have yet to find a FF client which I feel comfortable with. Although twhirl is a cool application, it just does not provide the same experience as visiting the FF web site. Maybe the interface is too busy compared to the FF web interface? - Scott Jarkoff
I love the picture idea, and I don't have much use for FriendFeed features quite yet, although if you want the bleeding edge adopter love, that would be the way to go. But yeah, personally I'd like to see more ways you could allow people to connect with content other than text. And if you could get video in there...whoa. - Justin Gardner
did not know you could do this. Cool for a quick share. But for adding video - do that to FeedFriend via seesmic or YouTube, Images - do that via flickr. Feed your existing services into it and take advantage of the "quick" features like commenting etc in FeedFriend. Otherwise the echo is going to get too loud. Nice idea - like it. - Dave Gray
via twhirl
I checked it and all signs point to Yes. :) - Morton Fox
So why aren't people moving to Pownce? - Garrido
via twhirl
They probably are...The twitter faithful scatter when it goes down. Some go to Pownce, some go to Jaiku, some come here, some catch up on email or RSS... it varies. - Bwana McCall
They confirmed it on their mailing list - today's and yesterdays outages are due to caching issues - Jesse Stay
via twhirl
woot ! Twitter is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..c.c......TIME OUT Hold on, no it's not - Shaf
:-) Well, this happened to me as well. It's a diferent URL, though, so I guess all you need is change it (from lastfm.fr to last.fm) - Terence Reis
via Alert Thingy
Also agree with the Frederic, its not easy to watch lets say 20 comments, but its easier to read. I understand your point of spam, but this way, I think video comments will stay as a nice feature yet not used much. - Alemsah
via Alert Thingy
Add the ability to rate video commenters. Helps readers decide whether to click 'play' or not. - Hutch Carpenter
I think it's a welcome addition, I would say it's each to their own though to be honest. I enjoy reading through the comments and they are more convenient when I am quickly browsing for information/updates. If I have time then I will sit down and view what people have said. It's definitely the way forward!! - Joe Dawson
via Alert Thingy
I think it still needs some refining, like Hutch says theres need to be a way for people to know if the video is "worthy" of been watched. - Gadiel Rivera
I think it's too soon to really tell anything, but it feels like it could lead to better conversations.. as of now, text is not enough, audio is not enough and video has the potential to pull the pieces together. - Julian Baldwin
via Alert Thingy
I would be satisfied if i could write comments on TecCrunch at all, but video comments are cool. - Ryo
via twhirl
personally I think video comments in general are a waste of time and bandwidth. 85% of the time I can't watch a video but I can certainly read a comment. - cori
via Alert Thingy
Video responses seem more authentic, you pointed out the importance of body language and tone as part of undestanding peoples intentions and I agree. -
