The ipod touch/iphone essentially is their netbook. The pricing and functionality are similar in many aspects.
- Tyler Golden
from twhirl
iPod Touch and iPhone are more MIDs than Netbooks IMHO
- Michael Gartenberg
True, but they do fill many of the functionalities that most netbook users want.
- Tyler Golden
from twhirl
Yes, they will be forced by the market. Consumers will likely migrate to that format for economic reasons. Apple will adapt and try to make a non-cheap-looking netbook.
- Rolf Schewe
Tyler, the iphone/ipodtouch is missing one major feature that netbooks have - a keyboard. give me an itouch tablet, with keyboard and handwriting at 500 bucks and it would sell like hotcakes
- John Head
from twhirl
No. The price points don't make sense for Apple. Think about it. The unsubsidized cost of the iPhone is over $400. There's no way they they'll make a device that costs $400-500 dollars (which is the typical netbook price point). They just can't capture their typical margin.
- Kevin Pedraja
@Michael, by focusing on devices such as a larger iPhone/iPod Touch Apple can use its own terminology to describe it and come up with its own compelling feature set rather than having to meet everyone's expected price point and feature standards for something called a "Netbook."
- Loren Heiny
Apple has always been bad a following market trends, though. So probably not.
- Victor Ganata
I can see it, though it won't be cheap. Probably around $700, include touch and it will be more OSX Mobile on steroids than the full OSX.
- Jamie
AnyCut, PicSay, QuickNote, and Locale are my favorites right now. And pac man of course ;-) I also like AccuWeather, and ShutterSpeed is worth looking at (though I don't know that's it's currently fully functional, I'm still testing)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
most of those are things we've already seen done, better elsewhere
- Michael Gartenberg
Ahhh... Since you didn't specify "apps that haven't been done before", I wasn't using that as a criteria.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
i'm looking for the killer apps that would want to make my buy or use a G1 instead of a Blackberry or iPhone. I know they'll be coming.. just not here yet
- Michael Gartenberg
seems the iPhone is a defacto business device for many folks
- Michael Gartenberg
personal and work, fully supported by Adobe IT
- Arnaud Fischer
I use it for both, but my work demands & requirements are far lower than when I worked in an I.T. shop. Even without Exchange support, I was using it with my Exchange provider via IMAP. Native Exch. support is huge though.
- Kevin C. Tofel
using it for both; supported by IT as we are currently running tests to ensure it doesn't present non-blackberry challenges for users and IT
- Lou Paglia
I use most of the features for work but our mail server is not exposed to the Internet and is not Exchange so there is limited use in connecting while I am in the office.
- Van Van Noy
mainly personal use and not supported by IT/company
- Frank S.
I use it for both and I am IT, so I support it ;)
- Sergio Cruz
Both but not supported by IT. Syncing to Exchange was easy since I had a Windows Mobile handset before
- John Sun
Both. My support from IT was a single 5-minute conversation when I first configured my Outlook. I've required no other support since then.
- Mike Doeff
I use my iphone for both work and personal, but up until now I've been freelance so not a big deal.
- Tony
I use it for both, but am not technically supported by IT
- Dustin Johnson
I am still exploring the fun of my Treo. When my original I-Pod Photo 60gig finally dies, then I will upgrade. So not really.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Definitely. It's not just the hardware, it's software too, that's being 'replaced'. Exciting times :)
- Mona Nomura
Apple ain't the only one, just got a Acer Aspire One to supplement my MacBook Pro. It is smaller and cuter the MBP.
- Nick Cowie
I guess it depends on your definition of "fully functioning". My cell phone worked as a phone but did it have maps, gps, excellent web browsing?no. So it may have been functional at what *it* could do but not in the context of the ideal. Apple is closer.
- Morgan
Apparently this report might not be real ... definitely is interesting and no we don't need to replace them
- Nick O'Neill
from twhirl
Amen. I'm content with a separate mp3 device, phone, and email device. Why? 3 great tools beat mediocre all-in-one
- Andrew Feinberg
Most devices are victims of planned obsolescence. 3 year avg lifespan is built in. One day there may be a true flight to quality, but people would have to radically redefine the way they think about 'stuff'.
- Nicholas Molnar
from twhirl
their products do create envy, but that's apple--a new tempting garden of tech Eden quarterly.
- Ed Terpening
of course we don't Jeremiah, I am still using my Creative Zen Micro of 2005, 6Gb hd mp3 player and it works very well
- Luca Conti
I don't have anything from Apple. I'm immune to Jobs' mind-control rays. :)
- Morton Fox
size matters, as does form. it's not about just feeds and speeds any more
- Michael Gartenberg
Yes! We must replace because Steve told us to!!! (tho my MBP is starting to grow old... :-)
- Stephen Roberts
What Morton said ;) Money doesn't grow on Moneyplants.
- Yuvi
I'm looking forward to the iPhone Shuffle. It dials randomly whenever you want to make a call.
- Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva - the iDevelop, the machine you *must* buy if you plan on developing anything on a Mac. It'll be twice the price it should be and will sell like chocolate cakes
- Yuvi
it's not about need at all, it's entirely about want. need is about broken things or a shortage, not an upgrade. thats all want.
- Jeremy Toeman
Thanks Akiva... I was wondering what it feels like to have green tea come out my nose. Now, I know.
- Yolanda
Its funny you mention that, Yuvi. I'd love to develop for the mac - Especially those iPhone apps ( i'd love to have/write a few to better administer my home network a la Remote). Having a high barrier to entry for developers is always prohibitive. With Apple now a household name, more and more applications are going to be needed for the OSX platform. Who is going to write them?
- Roberto Bonini
Apple is mentioned people go ga ga, either for or against. Heck we even have one apathetic in Mr. Fox. But let's see what the real post question is... Do we need them? Well, Mr. O, it's okay if you don't want them, it's okay if you don't like them, but leave need to the people who are in the market for [i+product name here] One note, from my fanboy side, my g4 powerbook (circa 2001) is still working fine. I didn't need a new mac, but I bought an Intel-based MacBookPro. What fine machines they both are. ;-)
- John McElhenney 2.0
IMHO twitter works well when you are following fewer people. Best if you know all these people really well, or at least to a degree that you have interacted with them on a personal level outside the blogosphere. The whole thing about having a conversation is a fallacy. It isn't happening in twitter. Often times I felt like being in a party where other people talks and I just watch.
- Ranjith Antony
I would have to disagree with Ranjith. I think it is a case where Twitter works well for a variety of different purposes, and that those different purposes involve different patterns of use. What works for Ranjith is probably the best for most folk to start, but would not work for me.
- Patricia F. Anderson
I'm not sure why it's happening, but both of my Twitter accounts (i have 2) lost followers AND people that I'm following. One of my accounts lost ALL my followers and ALL my people I'm following. Not sure if it's based on time? The newer account is the one that lost everything...
- Melissa Chang
final count seems i've lost about 200 followers, perhaps they were spam. but also lost 50 folks i've been following as that's a number i manage. No way to rebuild except over time
- Michael Gartenberg
non-deterministic social networks are good. i for one welcome our new whale overlords.
- Edward Vielmetti
Group therapy here: I hate that I have to workout and watch intake to maintain or reduce weight, all my youth I was underweight. Genetics are a bitch, I'm looking --and sounding-- like my dad more and more. On the flip side, I see the bigger picture, and now that I'm married, don't have to worry about girls, dating, and other growing up issues. It's a fun ride, and I'm enjoying it.
- Jeremiah Owyang
I like that now when I speak people listen, when I was younger that drove me insane. I hate that my body feels second hand already. (28)
- Toby Graham
Love using wisdom I didn't have earlier on when I was younger. I hate trying to get back into shape... it seems to take longer each time I attempt it. [But I'm NOT giving up. :)]
- Kevin C. Tofel
I don't worry so much. I realized at some point "hey, I'm pretty good at what I do" and now I trust my gut. Work sometimes made me a nervous wreck when I was younger (mostly I just cared too much, often about the wrong things).
- Jason Wehmhoener
Hate: Weight gain issues like Jeremiah mentioned; feel tired/run-down faster now; memory loss (which is secondary to having a hugely stressful job!!); not as much of a "looker" now...ignored more in favor of younger women (ouch); rejected more. Love: Respect, knowledge/wisdom factor is awesome!; street smarts, business saavy "capitol", better communication, people / political saavy; historical context is now present (better decisions/info); deeper tech domain knowledge / skill set ... big picture is big!
- Susan Beebe
The first time someone called me "Sir" I stepped out of the way because I thought they were talking to someone behind me. Then I realized. *sigh*. On the upside, I don't worry about *anything* anymore.
- Sprague D
LOVE: the confidence that really understanding yourself brings Don't-Love-so-much - the minor aches and ridiculously longer recovery times

Love: the freedom to do what i want to do, horizontal license, less stress. Hate: the fact that i realize i'm getting older.
- Kyle A Koch
Love: Freedom, more responsibilities, mental growth, and simply growing up through the hardships of life. Hate: Not being able to play in the park anymore cause I'm too big :(
- Bartek Ciszkowski
@Kyle, horizontal license = no one to tell you to get out of bed?
- Toby Graham
I Love that every day i grow more knowledgeable than I grow old. I hate that things to worry about increase faster than anything else (except maybe credit).

I love that people respect me more and more as I get older. I hate that those younger than me respect me lesser and lesser.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Love: dancing at parties (at last!) and not care what others might be thinking. Hate: diabetes.
- Bob Kingsley
I love that I can give self-doubt the finger. (finally) Why couldn't I have this confidence and wisdom at 18? ;) I hate the fact that I'm 29 and have some lower-back issues.
- Anna Haro
Hate: feeling compelled to respond to lists like this. Love: having kids.
- Clay Newton
Love the comfort and bonding of a long marriage, watching our kids grow, and the fact that every day is one day closer to heaven. Hate the aches and pains.
- Robert
Love: being able to dance on the sofa with my shoes on while holding a bowl of ice cream. Hate: being the one that has to clean up the ice cream when i drop it on the sofa.

I've been a kid and am an adult. Adult is better :)
- Michael Gartenberg
Love that I can afford the latest techno gadgets and try out new hobbies. Hate the gray hair and the aching bones after a good workout.
- Alfred C. Chen
Love: feeling more comfortable in my skin, broader perspective, increased earning power, knowing my stuff (most of the time, anyways); Hate: needing so much sleep, wrinkles
- Erin Collopy
Love the wisdom that comes from experience. Hate having to think about how finite our time is.
- LogEx
Love that a growing level of experience and knowledge allows for the generation of a number of ideas. Frustrated by knowledge and skill deficits necessary for successful execution that is revealed by those very same ideas
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I hate everytime Vera tells me I sound grumpy like my dad, and in the back of my head, I know I do.

This might be the straw, or nail, or, well, you know. Actually breaking all the connections destroys the value. Let's let it die and move here.
- Dean Terry
wow, I hope those connections are backed up!

@Jamie If they were not, would this be the end of twitter?
- Benedikt Koehler
Twitter, ah yes, I remember Twitter -- from wayyyy back in the olden days -- back when John McCain was still in diapers and dinosaurs ruled the earth right?
- Thomas Hawk
a lot of contemporary problems would be solved if we can accept that DNA "DOES" decide certain things. It is not bigoted of me to say that being Jewish gives me access to certain DNA that does certain things. Mark Davidson is wrong! DNA is like twitter... is twitter's architecture evil? No... only if you get hysterical about it and start bullying people about what they can do with their...

I liked how one person on twitter put it. the bigger issue is not the lost followers its the fact that we all still use it. I personally lost 100+ followers and friends. Biz and ev got some s'plaining to do

Why hasn't friendfeed worked out how to migrate twitter users across gracefully
- James Tenniswood
I wonder if the twittering at F8 caused the outage
- Bob Gannon
I suppose I should no longer be shocked, but I am, that they remain obstinately silent during these issues. GIve me some comfort that things are not really lost, give me the bad news already...but give me something. Free PR advice: crisis communications is a large field for a reason; you're going to be the poster child for how NOT to do it and, i fear, the consequences thereof. Trust is falling...

f8 plus OSCON equals FailWhale. Bummer.
- Eric Berto
I don't know about anyone else, but I just checked my email and I have about 30 or so follow notices from obvious spammers from twitter. This outage could be the result of an attack. Edit: I restarted my twitter account yesterday, btw.

at some point people are going to get tired of saying people are going to get tired and move on. I guess we'll just move on etc

I sure hope when it comes back things will be restored to normal... but I fear not. Might try something else out, just for kicks. God knows there are enough alternatives.

See http://status.twitter.com - " Missing followers 1 hour ago Folks are reporting problems with missing followers - that is, seeing the follower counts drop on their profile pages. We’re looking into this now. Update: We’re going to go into maintenance mode to correct this problem."
- Susan Beebe
FriendFeed is so I can tell all my Twitter followers to join me on identi.ca ;)
- Jesse Stay
In case you didn't know, there is an auto-subscribe option on Identi.ca so you don't have to deal with a large number of subscription requests or whatever. Just sayin.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Yes, everyone join identi.ca so we can prove, again, that a database backed tiered architecture can only scale so far before coming crashing down.
- Jason Carreira
as near as I can tell I lost 800 followers (from last time I noticed the number) and about 100 people I follow.
- Michael Gartenberg
I don't seem to have lost anybody at all. Was 620 this morning, am 620 right now.
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
Well, almost two hours later I'm missing about 54 followers and 30 followings. Friends report similar numbers now. Is anybody able to report getting people back?
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
Waiting Twitter's @ev or @biz or @jack replies :(
- Igor Poltavskiy
I lost about 70! Most that I got within the last 3 weeks! Also lost some that did not exchanged Tweets recently also lost the Spam bots, which I never followed! They restored the database which is 3 weeks old!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
According to Twitter the numbers will be fluctuating over the next several days. They've stripped out a lot of spammers. I find it hard to believe 700 of my 2200 followers were spammers though... but, like I say, those numbers may not be an accurate count. I'm still a loyal fan - won't be dumping Twitter .. yet. ;)
- Mari Smith
Maybe Twitter is just an experiment by market psychologists to find out how much failure and disappointment it takes to dispel a loyal brand community?
- Benedikt Koehler
is there a particular reason? I'm certainly tempted to buy more.
- Robin Barooah
Apple sold too many macs this quarter. The market's worried that they're doing too well. ;)
- felix
Time to buy ... I would have thought Wall Street analysts have caught on to Apple's tactic of under promise and over delivery. But once again they demonstrate that they are short-sighted and can't look past the next quarter.
- Clarence Chiang
Sadly Nice Fish, that's the 4pm (ET) closing price. $148.30 in the after hours market at 6:51p
- Robert Seidman
I think the interesting tidbit is the comment "Product transition that can't be discussed" ... Does it just mean refresh product lineup or completely new product category??
- Clarence Chiang
NFF - 166.49 is their closing price... after hours they're down ~11%
- felix
Guidance was off what the street wanted. AAPL has guided low now for some time so you think Wall St would learn... I'm not a financial analyst so won't comment on where I think the stock will go

How the heck did my "extended" hours box get unclicked- now running around screaming!
- michael sean wright
iPod and iPhone not Mac dependent, but foster demand for Mac. Adoption of Intel opened the gate to switchers. Marathon indeed.
- Michael Markman
yes Michael. it's a story of product integration and how well they work together.. kinda why they did a remote control app for iPhone :)
- Michael Gartenberg
I wonder how many people are now buying Mac hardware because they can run Windows and Linux on it. And how many of those, are mainly using Windows or Linux. Hardware like the Air I suspect is especially attractive. If either of those scenarios are happening then Mac share/sales/adoption <> Mac OS market share, and a useful metric would be time spent in a given OS rather than ownership.
- Ian Fogg
I doubt few if any buy a mac to run anything other than mac is as a primary system.
- Michael Gartenberg
Most definitely. This trend started when Apple transitioned to Intel inside. That moment is defining the next few years of computing IMO.
- Kevin C. Tofel
If Apple makes cheaper and lighter (not necessarily netbook category) laptops, I think they can easily double the market share.
- Inksim
yep, there's a trend here and all those points will add up as well...
- Michael Gartenberg
Media and Social Network: AOL Radio, Facebook, Last.fm, Pandora, Tuner, Twitteriffic
- Michael Gartenberg
Games: Aqua Forest, Bejeweled 2, Columns, Crash Bandicoot, Hold 'Em, Ms. Pacman, Tetris
- Michael Gartenberg
Note, Super Monkey Ball looks great but plays awfully. Way to hard to control IMHO even though this was a showcase app.
- Michael Gartenberg
You try Twittelator? I like it better than Twitterrific on most accounts except that big one of T'rific's built in browser. Sigh. http://is.gd/SXT (I love Super Monkey Ball although it is hard to control and Labyrinth is making my brain hurt. :)
- felix
It's interesting to me that the Top 25 apps listed in the store are games. The last thing I want to do with my iPhone is play games on it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
My favorite ones are not out yet. I do like EA's suduko
- Aviv
Just downloaded eReader from the iPhone App Store. 1 MB. Same application for Windows Mobile: 3 MB. Will be intresting to see if that trend holds between other apps... will have to check.
I like TextReader and ruBooks on my jailbroken iphone more than any other ebook reader I've tried on any platform, but I'm happy eReader is available and now I can read their books on the iphone.
- Inksim
nice to know all my old ebooks will make their way to iPhone
- Michael Gartenberg
Same here Michael. Curious: how many eReader titles do you roughly "own"? I've got about 200 in the library, which is why I opted out of the Kindle.
- Kevin C. Tofel
This could be one of the apps that pushes me to get an iPhone. 400+ books at this time. =)
- Jauder Ho
Just finished the download. Holding Option down when clicking "Check for Updates" let me browse to a file, so now looking for the right one to "make it so."
- Kevin C. Tofel
you option click on "Restore" in the iPhone tab of iTunes. No issues here.
- Jamie
Doesn't look like you should unzip it. Changing the file extension to .ipsw to see if that helps. Otherwise you get a bunch of unzipped files, images and such... more to follow in a few.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I don'r think its a .ZIP file, looking at what is downloading. Its is the update file uncompressed.
- Nik Jones
ipsw is viewd as a zip file, you need to change the real extension to ipsw or zip the files and then change that extension
- Michael Gartenberg
remove the .ipsw.zi[ extension and rename .ipsw. should work from there
- Michael Gartenberg
@Michael did it wipe your phone clean?
- Steve Rubel
I did Steve. Instead of one .ipsw file, I ended up with a folder and the contents, which is why I think I goofed. Working at it now.
- Kevin C. Tofel
at Steve it backs up your data and settings, but you need to resync media (podcasts, photos, music, videos)
- Jamie
I've still got at least 20 mins before the D/L finishes
- Nik Jones
Got it now. Safari was decrompessing the file for me, so I stopped that process and dropped the .zip so that it was an .ipsw file. Prepping the iPhone now it says! :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
remember not to unzip the files, just remove.zip and keep .ipsw
- Michael Gartenberg
Software extracted, now running. This is like watching paint dry. Although if I paint a room, I know what the outcome will be. Major difference, I suppose.
- Kevin C. Tofel

- Kevin C. Tofel
just want to know what happens with ziphone unlock, I would assume it kills it

Monkey Ball, eReader, Columns, Twitteriffic... much to play with

Stage Hand lets you control Keynote presentations. Zintin shows people close to you also using the app (geo-aware). TalkingPics lets you record audio notes over photos you take. There is a lot of quality stuff here

Counterpoint: your role is somewhat dependent on a technology landscape that is in massive flux. If you stopped reading/blogging (and twittering, friendfeeding, etc), you'd lose your edge, and sooner or later your job would be in jeopardy. Watch out for that Louis Gray guy, he's been popular of late. ;)
- Jeremy Toeman
Do I hear you're going to join the Blogger Olympic Team?
- Reid Evans
from twhirl
Jeremy, we agree. hence I said "increasing my overall total value". For what it's worth some other social media analysts don't spend as much time in the conversation reading and contributing as I do, and are arguably far more successful than I am. Louis is on a tear, I should hire him ;)
- Jeremiah Owyang
Road Warrior was solid. it's much more fun (and easy) to write the terrible sequels list. :)
- Jeremy Toeman
Hot Shots! Part Deux. I think there was a Thai boxing scene where one guy wraps his hands in burlap, dips them in glue, then dips them in gummi bears and sprinkles (instead of the expected broken glass & metal shards). Also the classic paratrooper scene where the guys all bail out screaming "Geronimo!" and then an Indian with a Tomahawk jumps out screaming, "Meeee!!!" Bonus points for Lloyd Bridges as President McCain.
- Karim
Star Wars Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones was FAR better than the Phantom Menace
- Prolific Programmer
The Naked Gun 2 1/2 was by far the better picture.
- Mark Trapp
Yeah, I agree the book only works at the conceptual level, amazing how catchy titles get eyeballs. I told Tim this, he signed my book "Here's to being a skeptic". ;)
- Jeremiah Owyang
And like 'The Secret' it became a self-fulfilling prophecy for the creator...
- Craig Thomler
I enjoyed reading it. I'm not rich yet, but it has certainly helped to put a lot of things like work into perspective.
- David Owens
I almost put the book down immediately after he told how he "won" the kickboxing title. Reminded me of the Seinfeld where kramer takes karate beating up eight year old.
- Michael Gartenberg
there were parts of the book that were original and good but what was good wasn't original (like this quote) and what was original wasn't good.
- Michael Gartenberg
Greeks had a slave society because they felt work was beneath the dignity of the free man.
- Michael Gartenberg
While I'm one of those that feels you aren't totally defined by your work, I know I'd be bored, stupid and lonely if I wasn't working. Actually that last bit sounds funny since I work alone out of my home. There's a testament to social networks: I have more 'friends' now than I did in 15 years of I.T. for large corporations. Hmmm....
- Kevin C. Tofel
Kevin, there's huge difference in being alone and being lonely. That's why folks like you and I can work out of an office by ourselves physically and still be surrounded and interact with many friends and colleagues
- Michael Gartenberg
After nearly ten years in workstation support, I'm bored, stupid and lonely BECAUSE of my work. Every now and then a cool gem drops into my hands. I know I have to make a change, but I've been thwarted so far.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
@Michael: agreed. We're living proof. [Although we're going to have meet in person one day, so you can prove to me that you really exist. ;) ] @MiniMage: Evaluate, Plan, Execute. Then rinse and repeat as conditions require... I know you can do it! :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
I like to play with and dissect new mobile technology. I like to be presented with an interesting technology problem and win the battle. When I show a frightened user something that makes him or her smile and realize the relationship between him and his computer CAN work, I like that. I like learning.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
well mini, now the next question is what would you like to do with that knowledge? help users? write about mobile tech for others? review technology?
- Michael Gartenberg
If I could find a nice balance of all three (helping others, writing about tech, reviewing tech), that would be grand. I have written on tech, and I've loved it, but I've not been able to make the effort lately; that's the dream, and I've felt so stuck in the reality.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
@Michael I thought several concepts in the book like reintroducing the Pareto Principle, batching and Parkinson's Law were quite valuable. Others, like the part on personal outsourcing and setting up online businesses, were less relevant to a guy like me.
- Steve Rubel
Steve, it wasn't all bad. see my post but neither Pareto or Parkinson's Law are new. None of what he said hasn't been said before and been said better. Again, what was good wasn't original and what was original wasn't very good
- Michael Gartenberg
Are you guys now going to spend 4 hours talking about this?
- shelisrael1
Glad t see I'm not alone with that opinion. He's got some interesting thoughts rehashed. But a lot of what he's done with his life is not the path I'd chose myself, to say it in a friendly way.
- Robert Blum
I'm just going to glare in Shel's general direction for four hours...well, after I finish this software review, anyway...
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I wanted some vehicle that made sense for things that didn't fit into Jupiter's blogs that weren't related to technology for the most part
- Michael Gartenberg
no because the longer you use it, the more expensive it becomes - the exact opposite to the pay up front model. I also think that this might pave the way for a subscription OS in Windows 7.
- Jamie
for mobile I prefer license model that is tied to the user and not device in case I upgrade device on same platform
- John Sun
the idea is that you never pay for upgrades. the downside, is you're paying for the upgrade whether you like it or not. for example, i prefer office 2k3 over 2k7. in the new model, i'd have no choice
- Michael Gartenberg
Not all "upgrades" are desired by end consumers. I'd rather work on older, non-supported functionality that meets my needs than be forced into new bells and whistles I don't.
