I got an email from 2005 Veronica too! She said she's going to give me advice on the best A2DP headphones by buds, over the ear, and full DJ style earcups - Analyzing both phone mic, and music quality, utilizing an HTC Dream running Cupcake in the next month on something called Teckjirra?
- Matthew DeVries
If you use the pay services, you get emails from the future to now. It helped my career a lot.

I want a message now from me in the future!
- Aaron
I just received a message from 2014 saying if I keep this thread going, the power's going to go out. I told myself to go screw! And now I'm writi-- *CLICK* ......... . . . . . . . . . . .
- Dave Friedel
You should go on BOL and talk about this. :)

Just sent myself a rambling email to arrive on my 40th birthday ...

Oooh gorgeous! I had to enjoy on TV,I had a street full of teenagers shooting off the loudest, so I was inside trying to keep dogs calm for over 6 hours. They got a treat every time a particularly obnoxious one went off- I went through a lot of dog cookies last night!!
- Ginger Kenney
That's as close as I want to get to fireworks:-)
- Francine Hardaway
it was steve's show and his content to do with what he pleased. But it was OUR time too. And our shared minds on that show. And our hearts. At least, my heart. :(
- Karoli
I guess it just proves the point that if you want something backed up, you have to do it yourself.
- Aron Michalski
I keep backups for clients and former clients in a fireproof, off-site vault. Could it be that such backups exist for your lost content? Quiet negotiations might be productive.
- George Frink
What happened to it? It wasn't on Arrington's site, it was on newsgang.net, right?
- Francine Hardaway
It's been on techcrunch for the past several months, Francine.
- Karoli
from BuddyFeed
If Steve and/or Tina don't have local copies of all those shows, there is a serious problem in workflow here. Hard drives die and people flake. Things that matter to you need to be in multiple places.
- Dave Slusher
I'm sure nothing is lost or gone. The shows simply aren't accessible online at the moment. I can't believe Steve and Tina wouldn't pass along copies to you if you asked, Karoli. Whether they'll show up online again... who knows.
- Ken Sheppardson
I certainly hope it's not 'gone' gone. But I can imagine how it feels especially for you, Karoli. It's a wait and see time.
- Micah Wittman
To be clear, I know Steve and tina keep copies. But they're not anywhere that I can point to them. Not in the cloud, at this time, anyway. So I have a zillion broken links on my blog now and more importantly, as far as the cloud is concerned, I'm just making stuff up. I'm less upset with the decision to take them down than I am the reasons for it.
- Karoli
from BuddyFeed
If I might quote the Boss: "Everything dies, baby that's a fact but maybe everything that dies someday comes back. Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty and meet me tonight in Atlantic City."
- Dave Slusher
Dave, LOL. I have most of them on my drives. But that's really not the point. I have them, but they're not mine to upload or place anywhere. I have enough respect for Steve's ownership to understand that he controls whether they live in the cloud or not, and I'm not going to usurp it.
- Karoli
It's amazing how childish this group of old men can be.
- Brian Sullivan
Those of us who downloaded the podcasts will still have them, but that's not the same, of course.
- Darius Dunlap
Brian, I don't view it as childish. In the world of gestures, this one can be read several ways. One way to read it is as a statement of content control. Steve owns the show. It was his show, to do with what he pleased. That was a given and understood. It could be argued that it was topical real-time content and not necessarily something that needed to be available after the fact. I...

"Owning" content (especially of this type) I thought was a relatively passé concept. I thought the whole event and aftermath was childish -- typical of "celebrities" -- these guys are the Paris Hiltons of the tech world - whatever usefulness they had in technology I think may have passed them by and they are desperately trying to hang on.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, do you seriously believe what you just wrote?
- Cliff Gerrish
Brian, I disagree with you. And I really didn't write this to invite more bashing of these guys. I'd appreciate it if you'd not make personal attacks on this discussion. That's not my point.
- Karoli
As to 'owning content'....until someone finds a magical way to pay for bandwidth, telephone bills, hosting costs, etc. I think it's reasonable to claim ownership.
- Karoli
Cliff --yes. Karoli -- sorry that is my response -- if you would rather not have my comments here please feel free to delete them.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, you should know this about me. I have worked on the Internet for many years, and the one hot button I have is being deleted. As a consequence, I don't delete unless I absolutely have to, and that usually involves something far more egregious than making a statement that is somewhat mean-spirited. Calling these guys the Paris Hiltons of the Internet and ignoring the contribution...

- Karoli
I hate the word "owning" in this context. It always seems to make people think of content as some physical object that can only be in one place at a time. We generate this stuff collectively and different parties have different rights to view, distribute, and redistribute it. It can exist in lots of different forms at the same time.
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe the Paris Hilton comparison was too harsh (not sure she has ever made a contribution) and I do agree that these guys have made sold contributions in the past. My point was that they seem no longer to be making much contribution -- they seemed to have moved on to being "celebrities" with all the ego centrism that implies.
- Brian Sullivan
Got to run now, driving up to Francine's in a bit. Thanks to all who contributed, and especially those who didn't. :)
- Karoli
Karoli, sorry to hear about that. I know I've been victim to content created for others that goes MIA. Even though it's not yours officially, you put the effort in. I hope they change their minds.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Let's hope this all blows over. I'm sad about the current state as well.
- Warner Crocker
Brian, when you say "celebrity," what do you mean?
- Cliff Gerrish
Cliff -I meant it in the pejorative sense -- a person that is famous for being famous.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, how long have you followed the work of Mike Arrington and Steve Gillmor?
- Cliff Gerrish
Follow? Never -- but I have been aware for at least a few years.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, what is the basis on which you judge their work?
- Cliff Gerrish
I don't "follow" Madonna, Michael Jackson either but I feel able to make a decision about their contributions. Do I have to be some kind of sheep to hold opinions?
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, you say "these guys have made solid contributions in the past" - can you tell me what you're referring to?
- Cliff Gerrish
Arrington established Techcrunch and that has produced useful online articles and analysis (but is most famous for breaking embargoes on tech release infomation from what I remember). Steve I am less familiar with -- but my understanding is that he was a respected print journalist for the San Jose paper and is now an online tech journalist. I have tried to listen to some of their online...

Hmm, I can't remember if Steve ever worked for the SJ Mercury. I know his brother, Dan, certainly did.
- Alex Scoble
I think of really depends on where you are comming from, whether you are a Friend of the Gillmor Gang, or just someone who has listened. A friend of the show doesn't say "if only so and so was not on then I would like it." and feedback from just anyone else should be taken with a grain of salt.
- Christian Burns
Brian, you said you "tried to listen to some of their 'online discussions.' What motivated you to listen in the first place?
- Cliff Gerrish
I was interested because they are tech personalities supposedly with something useful to say and because Scoble was part of the events I tried to listen to (I have known Robert for a long time and like and respect him).
- Brian Sullivan
Why do you think Scoble participates in the Gillmor Gang show?
- Cliff Gerrish
Not sure -- in some ways it is just part of the SV scene I guess -- which he relishes. I guess some of the people are if not friends are at least close associates.
- Brian Sullivan
Do you think Scoble feels the same way you do about the Gillmor Gang?
- Cliff Gerrish
Omg, Cliff Gerrish only asks questions. I think he is a bot.
- Jonathan Langdale
I ran out of other things to listen to.
- Cliff Gerrish
I listened because I randomly came across it at some point in the past and found that there might be some useful information within the broadcast.
- Jonathan Langdale
Dude, are you saying you listened to everyone else? You must be a bot! Nobody can listen to that much stuff.
- Jonathan Langdale
I'm finding this extremely interesting because when Google Wave is released, developers will be making wavelet bots that do exactly what Cliff is doing.
- Jonathan Langdale
This feels like computer chess, when you're waiting for the computer's move. Still waiting for responses to this board: http://cli.gs/zS3pUt
- Jonathan Langdale
Maybe the bot was programmed to move to another thread and ask questions.
- Jonathan Langdale
Thanks Jonathan. I have better understanding of where you're coming from.

Zomg. I drive a few hours and hal shows up. And michael Markman.

Man, how awesome. The trickle down energy of this kerfuffle has people wondering if one of the most intelligent and thoughtful writers I know is a construct. Asking questions is a great way to get answers but it's also a great way to find out which questions to ask and who you're talking to. Do you ever find yourself compelled by art or nature and not truly understand why? Do you ever...

I've had to review my own actions from the GG-fest and I realize that part of my response's tone comes from the fact of the intense love and pride I have for NGL. It was a moment in time and could be again, but it was a group of people who felt passionately about many, many things who swarmed around Steve. The same is true for the GG, kind of the major leagues for us. With this intense...

There is an experience I've had in my life that deals with Recovery; a phrase you hear is "Don't leave before the miracle happens." We experienced @NGL times when we had to sift through stubborn perceptions and moods and life in general, missed the mark and then, BAM, we'd find a lock step, a collective unconscious, a cascade effect where each persons input (or lack of it) would take...

I only occasionally listed on it for Scoble, it was hard to stick with it otherwise, Gillmore is such an authoritarian, the one time I was on he was incredibly abusive and kept shutting me up -- total boor.
- Prokofy Neva
I just reread what I wrote. I stand by it. I suppose any further input on this from me would be repetitive. I think I'll go back to listening.
- Aron Michalski
Aron, you summarized it well. really well.
- Karoli
To all of those who commented while I was driving up to francine's...including the bot and with special appreciation to Cliff...thanks for contributing positive things to this conversation. If you didn't, well...consider trying. NGL is a very special podcast to me, partly because I participated, but mostly because relationships formed that exist today. I am sitting in a beautiful home...

Also, to Michael Markman and Warner Crocker, forgive me. I've added your names to the blog post I wrote. It was 2am, i was stretching my capacity to think, much less get everyone in there who should have been. :)

My goal in life is to have an interesting conversation about tech everyday and Gillmor Gang usually helps me fulfill that goal.
- Robert Scoble
I'm partly with the "childish" comments - it's one thing to discontinue the show, but removing the dowloads is disappointing.
- Frank Koehntopp
Gestures are not always wise or well thought out, often they are reactionary; they can still lead to growth and the possibility of other future gestures. I have faith in Steve and Tina, they will follow the path they are meant to. I look forward to seeing where it leads.
- Aron Michalski
I have faith in them, too. If I gave the impression that this was aimed at them, let me correct it. It wasn't. It was simply an expression of sadness at times gone by and hope that there would be other times in the future. I think NGL is/was a valuable show. I believe they think so, too. Hopefully it will have a home/archive somewhere on the web.
- Karoli
Karoli, I don't think anybody reads this as aimed at Steve and Tina. It's just that even year-long hardcore fans like me sometimes struggle to understand their reactions to things. Let's hope there's a positive side to this in the future.
- Frank Koehntopp
Frank, I can't read Steve's mind either. Or anyone else's for that matter. But I do believe the positive side will emerge. Steve is usually about five steps ahead of the rest of us. He had Obama elected before he won the nomination, after all. :)
- Karoli
I wonder how much money you would really need to live there.......nothing fancy. Just sell everything here and go live there.
- suzanne
If very beautiful, but I would want the ability to teleport back from there anytime as well. I've spent about 3 weeks there, and you can get tired of it. Also, if I was going to live in on the Tahitian Islands, I'd choose some place less touristic.
- Cristo
Touristic - 0 results. Do you mean tourist-heavy
- Mitch
I went there last summer for my anniversary. Very expensive to go to, but if you really wanted to live there, it wouldn't take much. The people there don't have a lot of money. Just a very laid back and simple way of life.
- Andru Edwards
Love the photos, they are beautiful. It was nice when I visited, bu as Andru says, expensive, overly so and have had as good of times or better on other islands that were less expensive and not so far to travel.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Does this post have anything to do with the Google Wave demo? :-)

I'd say Google Wave is way better... At least, It's free :S

@garywan no, it's a base consumer play, soap sales, ice to the Eskimos as the glaciers melt...
