#infographic you can actually save upwards of 6,000 pounds--or more--simply by taking six basic steps: by washing your clothes with cold water, using low-flow shower heads, and air-drying your dishes in the dishwasher, among other things. Who knew the impact could be so large?

"The Equality and Human Rights Commission has warned that the use of airport body scanners may be unlawful. Scanners already in place at Heathrow and Manchester Airports may be breaking discrimination law as well as breaching passengers' rights to privacy, it said. The commission's chairman, Trevor Phillips, said it had "serious doubts" over the legality of their use."

what do you mean "may".. they are, full stop. Expensive toy that does nothing to increase security and everything to demean and degrade the passengers.
- alphaxion
I'd rather have these measures than be blown out of the sky thanks.
- Markus Hunt
But none of these measures will ever stop that from happening. So why give away your privacy, your money (in higher charges to pay for them) and your dignity for a totally fake sense of security? If terrorists were as prevelent as they are claimed to be, why isn't there an attack a week? Either they're not in any sort of the numbers or they're too inept to get the job done. Compare this lot to the IRA and you realise how tiny the threat really is.
- alphaxion
Considering that a passenger's chance of getting blown out of the sky are already minuscule, airport body scanners are not likely to decrease the chance much further. I doubt these would pass an honest cost-benefit analysis, and the invasion of privacy goes beyond any measure instituted so far.
- John (bird whisperer)
Another of the disgraces about the introduction of these machines in the UK is how the right to refuse the scanner and choose a pat down instead is denied. The UK government has barred this as an option.

"I wanted to see if I could recreate the opening crawl from Star Wars with only HTML & CSS, using WebKit's support for CSS 3D transforms and CSS animations. This is what I came up with: I'm only using JavaScript to delay the start of the music; everything else is done strictly with CSS. If you have Safari 4 or the WebKit nightly on Snow Leopard, you can try it at http://www.gesteves.com/experim..."

Goal - freeware and donationware (and maybe some super-inexpensive-ware) utilities for a biz environment. That can be installed and may be helpful to the network admin and many can stay for the users themselves. Here are a few that immediately come to mind. I am especially interested in programs that : 1) Might be picked up for use by the users, or 2) Will help the network admin when he works on the puter

"Kurzweil's firm has a relationship with Baker & Taylor, the world's largest distributor of physical and digital books. Through them, Blio will offer a library of more than 1.2 million titles across genres at launch. Not only can publishers set their own book prices, but the the cost of converting a book and hosting it on the Blio platform is completely free. Books bought through Blio can be shared among five different devices, similar to Kindle's licesing model. Baker & Taylor will also keep a digital copy of all of your books in the cloud for instant back ups. Whatever the appeal of the software, Kurzweil's demonstration was interesting for its choice of location. By doing the demo in Microsoft's booth, there was an implicit implication that this could be the e-reading platform not just for PCs, but for a whole host of Windows-based devices."

"The Volkswagen Microbus is a classic - even to those of us born after its time. Arguably unlike the newly remade Beetle, this remake of a VW classic is remarkably true to the original on the outside - but on the inside it is a bio-diesel hybrid stuffed full of high tech gadgetry and eco-friendly innovations."

Very intriguing. How much steel is in that thing? Chris, that would be my next question after fuel consumption: how safe is this thing? And I agree, when we can go back to making transportation that costs less than a small home, we may have achieved something amazing. ;)
- Melanie Reed
However, I have heard (and I'm not remembering where at the moment) that there has been a movement growing of people seeking alternative housing and substituting things like this as the new "mobile" home.

Everyone is loving this! We should have an FF one and use it to travel to all the FFers around the World (like Pea seems to be doing ;-)). Hehe. :-)

I've owned 5 VWs, two of which were split window vans. I'd love to have another, this is awesome!

I have had more VWs than other cars...starting with a 71 Superbeetle, and a Split Window Microbus. I would LOVE to have something like this.

I'd like to have something like this, something small. What do you really need? A bed, perhaps a TV and room for your computer. Then you can live anywhere you like, in theory.

We had a wesvalia built Micro when I was a kid. I loved that thing. It was a little flimsily built; but boy it was perfect for my family of campers and road-tripping warriors. Too bad this one is so pricey

The color palette is shrinking. It could affect the foundation of design for everything from websites to fashion. The fate of businesses and billions of dollars ride on choosing the right one. We’ll take a look at how color is becoming the next limited resource.

"Ring is a vibrating alarm designed for people who hate the loud blaring sounds of a typical alarm. The charging cradle is where you set what time you want each ring to go off. The ring fits over the tip of your finger and when that opportune time arrives, it vibrates. Putting the ring back on the dock shuts off the alarm."

It's made the pavements wider, which can only be a good thing if they're expecting double the amount of visitors in the next few years, but I can't see how the crossing will make any difference to anything. People will still try to cross diagonally when the traffic starts moving again, except this time they'll be stuck in the middle of the cross-road instead of at the side, which makes it more dangerous!
