they won't. FF will continue to be the testing ground for other things. Speaking for me, I have no desire to aggregate my life and integrate my communities on Facebook. Not now, not ever.

The first hint this was going to suck is putting pasta in a bread bowl. Excess carbs, anyone? ;-) . Reminds me of the Ads v. Reality fast food meme (which has been on FF in the past): http://www.thewvsr.com/adsvsre...

ah, but did it sate your hunger? This is what I call "matter" as the only thing it's good for is getting matter into your stomach.

Don't order the bread bowl - order the no-bread version. it's a dollar cheaper and contains 3x the pasta :D

@Jennifer.Dittrich Oh yes totally forgotten. The primavera was pretty good. But *always* order without the bowl. $7 is actually a very good deal for pasta delivery. You can't compete with that, whether it's preprocessed or not

'Back in November, I wrote up a review of the new Magic Mouse, noting that it was “Apple’s best mouse ever, but…” Essentially, the problem is a software one. Apple gave its new mouse multi-touch capabilities, but only takes advantage of a fraction of what it can do. (And yes, it’s fully multi-touch capable.) A new third-party program called MagicPrefs, enables all the multi-touch capabilities you could ever want for the device — and even some you likely don’t.'

- RAPatton
from iPhone
That would work, if you know how many people are coming - I hate to make you pay in advance, though! I just happened to think about the assigned seating. The good news is that every seat in that cinema is good, even the front row. (BTW, on the seating chart, it looks like there are three rows in the front section, and that's wrong - there are almost always only two rows in the front section, so that third row is the front of the back section. Annoys the crap out of me. I wish they'd fix it.)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Well, I like the second row, but I wouldn't get that for a whole group. Most people don't like to sit that close (even though it's not nearly as close at Arclight Hollywood as it is in most cinemas). I'd get three or four rows up in the main section if you can. Those go the fastest, though, so you'll probably have to work around what's already sold. I'm really excited about seeing you guys!
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I like to be about 1/3 from the screen center. I like the screen large enough that it is my whole view, but not large enough that I have to move my head
- RAPatton
At Arclight Hollywood, that's about row three to five. Seriously. Third row is right behind the aisle - some screens have a railing there, which is nice, but others don't, which just makes me feel exposed somehow. I can't explain that. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Do try to get near the center. The screen's large enough that if you're to the side you notice it a lot. EDIT: Hehe. I'm a choosy seat-picker, aren't I? It'll still be good, wherever we sit. Don't let me stress you out about it.

Is the accepted way to refer to same-sex couples "partners"? I see that a lot in print, despite the fact many men call their better halves their husband and women call their partners wives. Are straight folk embarrassed or uncomfortable applying husband/wife to gay couples?
Interesting thought. I don't know the answer to that. I never assume that couples of any gender are married and use the term "partner" very liberally for both homo and hetero relationships. Would it be more offensive to refer to someone as a wife or husband if the person did not hold that status (legal or otherwise)?
- Sally: reading a book
Good point. Are husband/wife only applicable legally? Using "partner" across the board seems fair.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
I think the term partner is used because people are uncomfortable seeing gays/lesbians calling their other halves husbands and wives and in some way that might denigrate what hetero couples have had across the board. Kinda separate but equal-ish. Right now I'd settle for boyfriend. ;)
- Derrick
You know, before this conversation I never thought that "partner" was a separate but equal term. I was under the impression it was the term gay couples used for each other. Learn something new every day. Do any of the style guides address this for print use?
- Sally: reading a book
Interesting - I have a number of friends who are long-term live-ins but unmarried, and as many of them do not like the idea of 'marriage," I've referred to them (and heard them refer to themselves) as partners.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Not me. My gay friends are each other husbands or wives, if married. If unmarried, they get the girlfriend/boyfriend name. IMO I think some straight people use the term 'partner' to shout out "Hey I got gay friends!" I can't think of a single LGBT friend who has used the term 'partner' to name their other half.
- Admiral Anika
So are they both husbands in the marriage (or both wives)? Asking because the only gay people I know are not married and this have never come up.
- WorldofHiglet
I don't know any married gay couples either but if I did then referring to men and their husbands or women and their wives would be neither embarrassing nor uncomfortable.
- Mark H
higlet - the folks I know refer to each other as husbands/wives.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Archangel - so 2 married gay men would call each other husband? Sorry, I'm not usually this thick but I'd like to get this straight. As it were.
- WorldofHiglet
Higlet - yep. Married guys in my library refer to each other as "husband." Some of my sorority sisters who married each other refer to their wives. And hetero couple friends who have been living together for more than 15 years get offended at being called "girlfriend/boyfriend" because to them, it doesnt impart the seriousness of their relationship as much as "partner" does. I figure depending on the folks, YMMV all around.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I've heard it used/used it for heterosexual couples as well as homosexual couples, but personally, I really only use it for couples (in either of the two categories) in the rare instances where I don't know if they're married or not. When I know for certain, I'll use the husband/wife or girlfriend/boyfriend labels (or the labels preferred by the couple).

Nah Derrick, fat dreads I get. These are the really tight dreads. Watching the OSU/MISS game, and I swear half the team has these 'micro-dreads' (?) which - honestly - just makes me hum 'Blame it on the Rain'. Help me out - suggest me some inexpensive, easy-to-make meals that I could do say, for dinner one night and have leftovers that I could take to work and eat for lunch the next day (or just make the night before). I've GOT to stop eating out, and most pre-packaged meals that taste like actual food are almost as expensive as eating fast food.
Make a big batch of rice, stick them in some zip-lock sandwich bags, and freeze them. It's so convenient to pop them in the microwave. Dennison's chili to go with them. Or make Golden Curry with some meat and veggies.
- Rodfather
Michelle, I think I do, but I have never used it, so I'm a little scared of it. :) Adrian, gumbo sounds time-intensive to make, and I'm not really a cook. At all. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Any stir-fry and rice combo heats up well the next day. You could make a massive pile of sandwiches and freeze them, then just grab a couple before you leave for work. You can also freeze muffins and cake. Add a piece of fruit and you're good to go.
- Mellissa
Oooh... Golden Curry. That's what I want now. Wait a minute... RODFATHER? Get out of my head! Last time you posted a photo of CHILI DOGS, I spent two days trying to get them. I finally got them yesterday.

homemade chicken fried rice, all crockpot stews, chili. I like to cook big on sunday and then not worry about it, so i collect crockpot cookbooks - I highly recommend this method.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Ooh, pot roast also good for leftovers. Plus, same ingredients for stew.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Ok, I will back up the lentil soup also. Very healthy too if you make with minimal salt and no oil.
- Adrian
I would suggest fried rice if you are good at cooking rice or have a rice cooker. Or roast a whole chicken, and roast some veggies beside it (or in the same pan, but I've never tried those and can't vouch for them). Chicken is super-affordable when not pre-portioned or boned out, so you can probably afford to splurge on a nice, high-quality one. Or get salad leaves (romaine, arugula, or baby spinach) for when you're too lazy to cook veggies. Frozen peas are great for easy cooking too.
- Andrew C
Also, do not fear your crockpot. Best idiotproof kitchen invention evar. Dump in ingreds, set to low, dinner's done when you get home. Win!
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Aha! I do have a crock-pot! Just pulled it out of the cupboard, where it's lived for years. This could be good. *goes to search for crock-pot recipes* Archangel, it's the planning ahead part that's going to get me. I'm usually an "OMG I'm going to starve if I don't eat within the next five minutes, what can I make in less than five minutes" kind of cook. ;)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Or pick up a whole rotisserie chicken, eat the dark meat with some taters and veggies for dinner, hook up a sandwich for lunch next day. Tadaaa! We do this a lot. Probably too much. Mmmm... potato logs too. Damn it starving now.
- Adrian
Roasted chicken is super easy. Then you can bring chicken pieces to work or make it into chicken salad.
- Shannon Jiménez
Probly not too healthy, but cheap and GOOD. Tad's Mexican Mess: Ground beef + taco mix. Cook, then mix in cheddar cheese in the skillet and then crunch up chips into it. YUM.
- Tad
You guys are awesome! I knew with as many food pictures come through my stream, y'all would be able to help me out. ;) And now I'm starving. And I have to go to the store. With a budget of $20. This is not good, y'all.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Also, casseroles. They're easy, cheap, and freeze well if you get sick of one before it's done.
- Shannon Jiménez
Just recently, I made a super-delicious chicken hash - a bit of leftover chicken, hash browns (I coulda used a potato or two but these needed eating up), diced carrot, celery, and onion, some frozen corn, and some pesto. The skin, I cut up and fried, then microwaved for some crispy cracklings to sprinkle over.
- Andrew C
Enchilada bake casserole! Anika makes this. Always hits the spot.
- Adrian
How long does the $20 have to stretch you? The thing about meat at the store is that you basically pay for tenderness and/or butchering, not flavor. So buy whole birds or tougher cuts (of pork or beef) and either do some of the butchering yourself or sear, then braise or slow-cook the tough cuts.
- Andrew C
A friend buys deli meat and bread at the beginning of the week and leaves them in the work fridge. Just enough to last the week.
- Rodfather
Andrew, I'm not sure. I'm hoping not too long, because I should be getting paid soon. $20 is what I have in cash right now, and I'd like not to use the little bit of credit I have left until I absolutely have to. [That's actual cash - I have a bit more in the bank I'd also prefer not to use.]
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Oh - $20? I'd say you're gonna be living off of rice, beans and water for the foreseeable future. Doable, but no fun. As a bonus, you're sure to lose some weight! :)
- Tad
I would definitely look for whatever's on sale. I do that all the time anyways. =) Even when you're flush, it never hurts to be frugal and it also imposes variety - you can't always eat the same thing when different things go on sale.
- Andrew C
Yeah, it's a little tighter this week than normal, but I'm hoping to still stay inexpensive in the future (and STOP EATING OUT) to help not getting in this situation again if the money doesn't come in on time. ;)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Ooh, now *I* want some of that Golden Curry.
- Derrick
Make a batch of tuna salad or egg salad. For a less soggy sandwich, pack the salad in a little plastic bowl and take fresh bread along to put it together at lunchtime. Piece of fruit and you're good.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
To stretch your $20 as far as possible, buy rice and beans. But don't get the convenience versions of either (ie. not microwavable rice, nor canned beans). Your best bet is to get brown rice (unless you dislike it, some people do), some wild-rice you can mix in for variety, and one or more good dry beans in bulk. Some beans are *extremely* tasty even unseasoned.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Just got back from the store: rice + milk + cereal + noodles (the kind in the bowl that can be microwaved; I caved, but they were only 69c) + OJ + ground beef (not as lean as I'd like, but SUPER cheap) + hamburger buns = $15. I'm okay with that. Doing sloppy joes tonight as friends might come over; if they do, there'll be plenty for all, if not, I'll have lunch tomorrow, too!
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Michael, I hate microwaveable rice, so no worries there. I'm not much for beans except for bbq beans, which I've only had from a can (or, like, a restaurant). I guess this whole cooking and eating things I make instead of buying so much pre-made stuff is kind of like a #resolution, huh? It'll be good to get me to try out new things, at the very least.

Bean soup? Ham hocks are really really cheap and they add great flavor. Add some chopped veggies and it's pretty nutritious, too.
- Katy S
Meatloaf!!! great for dinner - great for sandwiches! ;-p
- Robyn Hawk
Make a steak, roast chicken, grilled boneless skinless chicken breast, or big piece of fish and have with rice and a simple steamed vegetable (or even frozen vegetables) for dinner. The next day, put some of that sliced meat or fish over a big bed of greens. If you crave carbs, put a little of rice right on the salad too.
- Laura Norvig
Also, if you have a fridge, microwave, and toaster at work, keep stuff at work for instant lunch whether or not you have last night's leftovers. I keep a loaf of healthy bread, peanut butter, butter, cheese and jam for various toast snacks. Also yogurts, salad greens, dressing, canned soup. I always have some sort of lunch available.
- Laura Norvig
We have a fridge and microwave, but the fridge is...uh...not recommended for actual use. The office used to be dominated by a bunch of slobby guys. We've reclaimed the microwave somewhat, but none of us are keen on using the fridge until we can get it replaced. We bring insulated bags with ice packs instead.

So here's an idea of how dysfunctional my family is. End of Nov, I learned my aunt had a stroke and went into the hospital (in AZ). Today I found out she died that night and the funeral was in IL (a manageable drive). My dad's response to my being upset? "I told your sister."
Thanks, we were not especially close, but I still would have gone to the funeral. It's just so frustrating. The icing on the cake is that I'm the one who looks like an insensitive ass who doesn't show up to things.
