Whoa. Just briefly talked to my dad, whom I've never been close to for a bunch of reasons, but after apologizing for missing my birthday, and just before wishing me goodbye said this: I love you.
I'm taking next week off, and am thinking I'll drive down and surprise him. I honestly don't know the last time I've seen him. Has he been a perfect dad? No, but he's done the best he could. Have I been a perfect son? Not even close...but that doesn't mean we can't work on it together.

people need to understand that everyone fucks up, parents included. we wish they were perfect but noone is... the fact that he's trying to mend his ways is a big thing. i hope things work out..

D - About the time I reached the age where I could start to understand and appreciate my father, he died. As I've hinted at before, we were never "close" in the way that I attempt to be with my daughter. It's not an easy thing to do D. I mean love is a good start, but there's understanding and patience and probably a host of other virtues that don't come to mind that need to be in the mix. Having said that, it's worth it. Good luck with it. I envy you.
