I have a feeling Obama will go down as one of greats: Wash, Lincoln, Teddy, JFK...Maybe, just someday, he'll get his own bill/coin.

Never thought of the bill/coin scenario, but I have thought the possibilities are there to be included with Lincoln, Teddy, and JFK. If he runs his presidency like his campaign was ran, the chances are good. - David Finch

"> The problem is that our medical system is so astoundingly greed-oriented that it causes people to not trust it. Let me get this right, Russia found some problems in the 70's, so they stopped doing something. Most of the rest of the first world, which doesn't have the same kind of "greed-oriented" medical system have happily been doing vaccines with thimerosal all this time (indeed, the NOT using of thimerosal has been lead by our "greed-oriented" world). From this we conclude that we have a problem with thimerosal?" - Christopher Smith
Darwinian evolution tends to sort these kind of issues out. The anti-vaccine movement is started by the too-smart-for-their-own-good crowd, and sooner or later a good resurgence of the measels tend to trim down this population. - Gene Chuang

Keboard and screen are personal taste (and how small you can go), but you have to make sure that you have a real HD if you have XP, and Atom. Flash SSD is too small, and any processor other than Atom is just too small. I use MSI Wind with 6 cell battery (although 9 cell would be cool) - you do need the battery life - Ian D. Nock

I have an EEE PC 901. It works reasonably well. It is the right combo of weight and power for me. I especially like that I can get 5+ hours on the battery when I need to. - Sean Brady
Hey Dave Winer. I'm a somewhat older feller, not unlike yourself. Do you spend hours and hours on your netbook (strain on eyes, etc)? That's my doubt. I clock some serious time on my current laptop, a PowerBook G4. I do a lot of coding. My wife thinks I'm nuts, to be wanting a netbook. - Ted Gilchrist

Can't go wrong with the Asus Eee PC 1000H or MSI Wind. If I were buying now, I'd look into the Samsung or HP. I like the layout of their keyboards. The Samsung has the best battery life. - Rodfather

Blogs feel so mainstream now (newspapers and companies have them), Twitter is starting to mainstream, more brands are moving in. Friendfeed, for the most part is still pure, virgin, and un-colonized.
Certain the case, Jeremiah. I think a question to be asked is are these technologies and communities designed to go mainstream, or are the early-adopters having to move each time their 'patch' is invaded by The Guardian, NYT or CocaCola? - Matt Harwood
The barriers to entry on Friendfeed are far greater than the other tools. Twitter is easy to use --blogs require time. - Jeremiah Owyang
the beauty of blogs and twitter is they support mainstream usage as well as niche usage, I would be very wary of statements that claim they have 'gone mainstream' because the statement is inaccurate, the small groups of people who have coalesced around particular topics are still there. Don't let mainstream usage of social media obscure where the real value is getting created. - karl

If Twitter is going mainstream, where are all the early adopters going? Where else do you guys go besides Friendfeed?
FriendFeed is still #1. Heavily interested in #PeopleBrowsr myself ...I think that's one app to really watch in 2009. Seeing much more traffic on Facebook in the last quarter as well. Social | Median has also taken off like wild fire! - Susan Beebe
I'm an accidental early adopter. I got into FriendFeed much faster than I did Twitter. Like both, not actively pursuing the next big thing. Facebook is #3, SocialMedian is #4 for my attention. - Hutch Carpenter
That's a *big* IF IMO. - AJ Kohn
Why do they have to go anywhere? Your earlier post premised that people had to stop blogging because MSM was using blog software. I haven't stopped blogging, I don't see the connection. Lots of people use computers now, when I started very few did. I still use a computer. Why should I stop? What we found when selling software was that people didn't switch so much as use both products, whatever it was. Spreadsheets, word processors, etc. - Dave Winer
I think the market will stay locked as-is with Twitter dominating but stagnating, until it's possible to compete without forcing everyone to switch. That is, until there's some measure of compatibility. The connection betw FF and Twitter is insufficient. - Dave Winer
@Gregory: It depends on your definition of mainstream. IMO what we're seeing is the beginning of the early majority entering Twitter. That's why we see the banal stuff. But I'm not sure Twitter has the legs to get through the early majority much less get to the late majority or laggards. - AJ Kohn
What does "Going mainstream" even mean, anyway? Twitter isn't about to usurp Facebook or Myspace or IM or Blogging, for that matter. - Eric P
Dial 100 numbers at random across the country and ask if they've heard of Twitter. I'd be shocked if you got 20 who did. - AJ Kohn
Twitter will not go main stream until you get the 14-18 crowd. I can tell you from the kids I have spoken to they have no clue what is Twitter. They do know My Space and are slowly moving to Facebook. Right now its all about texting and IM. - Michael Wishnick
Michael - I wonder if IM/texting are gateway activities to more public posting like Twitter? - Hutch Carpenter
Friendfeed and Facebook. Friendfeed will continue to emerge once it's easier for newcomers, either by GUI changes or a really good downloadable e-book (Which I've been wanting to write for the last two months :) Facebook faces similar GUI challenges and has taken a relatively simple product and added numerous features that a majority of people aren't using yet. - Charlie Anzman
Some form of life-streaming WILL go mainstream. I can see a de-coupled Facebook Newsfeed getting a lotta traction from those relative ludites. Good Post and Comments @ Louis Gray's: http://www.louisgray.com/live... - Marko Bon
Now that everybody's wearing pants, what are the early adopters wearing? - Ken Sheppardson
Your premise is false - the wonder of Twitter (and other asymmetric following models that create semi-overlapping publics) is that it is resilient against more people being involved. We don't have to follow them. - Kevin Marks
The big challenge for social media: allow multiple crowds to exist in parallel, with small intersections, without them annoying each other. Eg: multiple language circles or topic circles, but also the information-addicted early adopters AND the mainstream. It's too hard on twitter, although FF's filtering plans show they understand that challenge - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Early adopters will start putting more emphasis on face-to-face and telepresence. - Laura Norvig
Good point Laura. Direct interaction tools (GTalk, etc.) absolutely will see traction this coming year, especially those equipped with audio and or video. BUT ...face-to-face stills wins the race :) - Charlie Anzman
To this day no one has been able to explain to me exactly what need Twitter fills, except to give certain people in the tech community to have something to gush over. Proper social networks already cover all the potential use cases for a typical user. - Eric P
I'm done going places. I don't want to have to try/learn/adopt yet another web UI. I'm happy to go off to use a new UI to try out (i.e. configure) different routing and filtering middleware, but I want more than every to reduce the number of sites I visit constantly and simplify my dashboard. Right now that's an IM client, Google Reader/Gmail, and FriendFeed. And as much as I'm reluctant to do UI work myself, Google Reader/FriendFeed integration would have a big enough payoff for me I'm very, very tempted.. - Ken Sheppardson
FF hasn't hit its peak yet. Looking for an app like pinger.com from FF to really integrate those feeds. Having an iPhone app like pinger do the aggregation is a waste when the FF web site already does this. I foresee great things from FF. Twitter is just a component of the social media web. - Ernie Oporto
I drew out my social data graph this past weekend and described this exact usage tiering here: http://genechuang.blogspot.com/2008... - Gene Chuang
@Eric, Twitter's value is unique to each user and cannot be explained, it absolutely has to be experienced, and some people never get to the tipping point where the value is revealed. Our agency uses it to keep track of announcements, blog posts, and developments in the nonprofit field. We just would not take the time to do this with Google Reader. With Twitter, we see it all in one place quickly. It works. And makes it easy to interact. - Laura Norvig
Friendfeed is going mainstream too.:( :) - Igor Poltavskiy
I'll stay at FriendFeed and help it grow as long as it stays independent. FF still has much room for growth - and more features to be added. I use Twitter for direct contacting people to get them to participate in discussions and collaborations here. - Internet Strategist
