Julian Foxx: "Women will be attracted to different physical types depending on their stage in the menstrual cycle." ....hmmm...interesting
Yea man, you didn't know that? A couple days before they ovulate they are much more attracted to bad boy alpha types, where as the rest of the time provider traits are more attractive. - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl

there's a good discussion about Paypal going on at AVC this morning http://www.avc.com/a_vc...
I use paypal pretty much every time I have the option as well. The one thing that annoys me about it is that it defaults to ACH withrdawl rather than credit card payments. - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl
Robert Scoble
Arrington is right about Facebook. It's deplorable that Facebook allows hate speech but not nipples. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
Do you mean they should allow nipples too ? - Jim Braux-Zin
Totally agree down with FB - Kemp Edmonds
Why can't you have a breastfeeding community but you can have a Holocaust denier site? Really lame Facebook. - Robert Scoble
Jim: if you are going to hide behind freedom of speech, then you gotta be consistent about that. - Robert Scoble
Jim: That's my opinion. I think holocaust deniers are horrible idiots, but it's not Facebook's place to put them in their place. Nor should it be up to Facebook to tell breastfeeders to take a hike. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Not to mention Facebook refuses to post ads for films about lesbians (that AREN'T porn). http://www.realprincessdiaries.com/2009... - Is Facebook a little afraid of Internet sexuality? Hmm... Do we need to get the MPAA to design a G, PG, PG-13 rating system for website too? Yikes. - Tyler Hayes
Its tough being the biggest isn't it Zuckerbergnutz? Seriously Facebook needs to pull up its socks and start protecting human rights and freedoms while doing away with hate. Why can't I dislike something on my Facebook feed? - Kemp Edmonds
I am ALL for nipples. But apparently the FCC isn't the only organization to have a problem with them. - Dan Messer
Chris: I'd agree with you if Facebook was consistent and left up all speech. But it bans stuff all the time (and people) and is NOT consistent with its defense of freedom of speech. So, since they already have trashed free speech principles, they should get rid of the Holocaust deniers too. - Robert Scoble
Chris: I agree. If the groups are not forbidden by law, Facebook should allow them. However, the fact that children could access them must be taken into account... - Jim Braux-Zin
Children have nothing to do with this lol. We all agree Facebook isn't held to freedom of speech, they can do what they want. That doesn't mean it's ethical for them to do that though. Then again, this is the only social media network who owns your material, rather than you owning your material. So I'd say they've kind gone against most of the rules so far. - Tyler Hayes
The real point is : forbidding hate groups doesn't help human rights at all. By keeping them in public places, they are bound to be more moderate and can easily be monitored. - Jim Braux-Zin
Robert: I'm saying that Facebook should be consistent and leave up all speech, etc. I find it horrible that it picks and chooses at all; that its choices are bad ones is irrelevant to me. They should leave all enough alone and do so consistently. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Jim: Excellent point. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I agree with Chris. If Facebook chooses to not leave up all speech, then where are the rules that say what they will/won't allow to be posted? - Tyler Hayes
YES TO NIPPLES, NO TO NAZIS! - Michael Forian
They are taking the same approach as the app store for the iPhone. They should be consistent. Let the community decide. - Chris Mullins
Are you saying they would prevent a topless meme like was on Friendfeed last week? ;) ;) Men have nipples too. - David Damore
I think its time for the men to do a Topless Meme on FB then.. - CW™
"I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?" - patrick
Playing devil's advocate here... Should the breastfeeding/Holocaust thing be seen differently since the breastfeeding issue was pictures of nipple whereas the Holocaust thing is hate speech in the form of text? - Rochelle
This is why we must move on Darfur. Hitler has been heavily quoted at the outset of the Holocaust "Kill every Jew. Every man, woman and child. No one will care. After all who today remembers the Armenians?" Facebook should brook no hate speech. Hate speech is not open discussion. It perpetuates deluded megalomaniacs and their warped causes. Period. - Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
Thank god they allow links to nipples! - I'll have to build my stalag collection somewhere else. http://www.sterf.be/tag... http://www.filmforum.org/films... - Matt Robson
Hate speech may be bad, it is speech. We are on a *so* slippery slope... - Jim Braux-Zin
Anybody know what the policy is of censoring tools like netnanny toward breastfeeding pictures? - Bruce Lewis
Bruce: Same as Daleks toward anything at all. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
+1 mike arrington - Karim
@CW™ @patrick: +1 for each of you. - David Damore
We all know where hate speech leads, going how it became hate crimes in Nazi Germany. Appeasing it by allowing it is never right. Hate speech is still the slandering of someone. And in its worst form, it leads to people being hurt, maimed or killed. - George Hall (Australia)
Chris :-). But actually that was a serious question. The TOS for a site I run punts decency standards over toward tools like netnanny. I hope by doing it that way I'm not inadvertently censoring reasonable pictures. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce: And I gave a serious answer. As far as my experiences have gone, breastfeeding pics are as good as hardcore pornography. [NOTE: This is referring to Bruce's question re: censoring tools & breastfeeding pics.] - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Chris, when was the last time you were breastfed? - Akiva Moskovitz
Does this mean that in those fb advertisements- the lonely girls offering their services to me won't have any nipples either?? - Chris Loft
Chris Charabaruk, so you're saying that, in your experience, hardcore porn is the same as a mom feeding her baby? - Rochelle
I'm reminded of a holy place called the Milk Grotto in Bethlehem. JC and parents escaping Herod to Egypt, baby Jesus needing a breast feed. Mlk drops and turns the walls of the grotto white. But Christian artists and sculptors depicted it in all it's glory. Virgin Mary shown with one bare boob. If it's good enough for christian artists and sculptors... - George Hall (Australia)
Rochelle: No, I'm saying net censorship packages like NetNanny say that. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Bruce, from what I've been able to determine via Google, NetNanny classifies breastfeeding pictures as "obscene". - Rochelle
Solution is more nipples, not fewer Nazis. - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
Nipples uber alles? :p - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Luckily that's a 2:1 ratio by default. - Akiva Moskovitz
Rochelle, what search did you do? I'm having difficulty finding anything. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce, a comment from "Jen" here: http://madeadifference.blogspot.com/2008... - Rochelle
Surprised this is rarely mentioned but it is against the law for punishing an individual for being a part of a group (any group protected under the law, including scumbag Nazis) sooo, just throwing this out there that they (Facebook) may be ambivalent for that reason. (Court case: Scales v. Noto ((I think)) - Brandon Mendelson
Brandon, you have a choice between Scales vs. U.S. or Noto vs. U.S. - Rochelle
deplareolable - J.D. Deutschendorf
1. Everyone likes nipples. 2. Everyone has nipples. 3. If you think about it the word "nipples" is funny. :-) - Dave Winer
The Gospel According to Dave. - Akiva Moskovitz
Brandon, Scales & Noto were prosecutions under U.S. law (the Smith Act). An internet company's Terms of Service aren't necessarily telling people not to break the law, but rather stating what constitutes *acceptable behavior* on their service. If Facebook says that you violate *their* rules, they can kick you off *their* service, whether what you did was legal or not. - Karim
The problem with censorship is that it creates a slippery slope and is subject to subjective abuse. As soon as you start censoring you will get hit with the "why this, but not that," argument. It's almost impossible to win. That's why the less censorship the better. It may not be entirely possible to have zero censorship for some sites (think spam, porn, etc.) but the best policy is to... more... - Thomas Hawk
First twitter is a business, so it can ban or allow anybody they want, that being said I think they should allow both groups. The Holocaust Deniers are sick and hateful group but they should be allowed to stay in the bright light of day where everyone can see their stupidity. Not allowing the breast feeding group seems a little childish. - Kim Landwehr
At face value I would agree with Mike Arrington on this. But then he took a different standpoint on the Kathy Sierra uproar 2 years ago - there free speech was king. The breast issue is a different issue. They should not be talked about together. While I have hardly any problems with any form of nudity, lots of cultures do. What they have in common is that both issues cause groups of... more... - DC Crowley
This is an idiotic statement. Freedom of speech doesn't just mean when you agree with it. - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl
Kim, when you say "Twitter", I assume you mean Facebook. Also, to clarify, Facebook allows breastfeeding groups and pictures. What they don't allow is pictures that show exposed nipple or areola. - Rochelle
Did it really take a Mike Arrington to interest the digerati in the breastfeeding censorhip issue? Sheesh. - Daniel J. Pritchett
There is a time and a place for everything - Just like there are specific forums for specific things - Facebook is neither of the above mentioned forums. It is a social networking site & thus should be used for that purpose only! - Medical Alarm Concepts
No, sorry. You're blatently wrong. You can't discriminate against people because of their beliefs on a social networking site, no matter how irrational they may be. And as far as irrationality is concerned, i promise you that belief in a holocaust conspiracy is less irrational than belief in an omnipotent god. Religion is the most dangerous social construct in the history of the world,... more... - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl
Anthony is 100% correct (as is Geoffrey). The solution is more nipples, not fewer nazis. It would be wrong in my opinion to ban simple speech, just because someone thinks of it as hate speech. If the speech is intended to, or does has the effect of inciting violence, or other types of attacks on a certain group or groups of people, then it cannot be allowed. Beliefs do not equate to hate. AND BREASTFEEDING SURE AIN'T PORN. OMG. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Their choices prove something about them but they can do as they please, as a business. They have the right to choose what groups they allow to express themselves, or not. However, I think there should be more nipples, and maybe more cowbell too. - Rick Cogley
I wonder how many of you guys who are saying "more nipples" are in favor of the breastfeeding photos not because you feel women have a right to post them and want to support that right, but simply because you're a guy and you want to see pictures of breasts. - Rochelle
I want women to have the right to post their breast feeding pics AND I want to see more boobs! - Andrew
Less hate, and no Nazis is always a better option.....more nipples is never bad. :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
You guys need to realize that, in nearly all cases, holocaust denial isn't an independent issue; it's part of a larger problem. Sure, maybe not all holocaust deniers are neo-Nazis but you can bet that most neo-Nazis are holocaust deniers. Either way, the groups are inextricably linked and Nazism, neo or otherwise, is hate and does promote violence, etc. Last I checked, breastfeeding just promotes healthy babies. - Akiva Moskovitz
Also, keep in mind that Facebook doesn't ban breastfeeding groups. They've banned nudity. It just so happens that members of breastfeeding groups tend to be all right with trading photos of themselves breastfeeding which just so happen to usually include nudity and so it was the breastfeeding groups that were making the most noise. I think several different issues are being conflated here. - Akiva Moskovitz
Hate speech takes a lot of reading and is difficult to find. Nipples are easy and fun to look for. - M. Rubinstein

Are we really becoming a nation of people who reflexively share information with everyone the minute we have it? We might be. Twitter has no choice but to hope so. They might be right. - http://fredwilson.vc/post...
does that mean the Shrinks will start to be relic of the past, if we can share information & be candid & real then there wont be much to hide & or be ashamed bout or deal with issues. The SOCIAL WEB maybe become the SHRINK as the community in Countries like India/CHina etc is the SHRINK for the individual. - Baba
No, this freeflow of information is leading to a development of poor personal boundaries. A lack of boundaries will cause more problams that shrinks can play with. - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl

Partially true, but I've always found that being surrounded by smarter students was more important to my academic success than any other factor. Smarter students around one leads him to work harder on his own to learn the material regardless of teacher competency. I was always very competitive so being second best was never an option. Oh, oh, @techcrunch thinks I need a friendfeed intervention! Check this out:
Wow....Bottom line; YES that is a TON of time, but you wisely defended it as you're migrating your "content" here on FF, generating more buzz for your blog and engage way more people. I, of course, am biased cuz I need "intervention" too. I was going to launch a "blog" but found that FF became my blog for short term writing / sharing needs. I still plan to launch a blog in 2009, but am planning that out - Susan Beebe

Michael, you're funny. Genaro: I haven't been asked by my current sponsors yet, but they can look at all the people I'm interacting with on FriendFeed to get a good sense of who is here and on Twitter you can see all of my followers. Same on Facebook. So, sponsors generally have a pretty good idea of what kind of people I'll reach. - Robert Scoble

Robert you are doing a fantastic job pioneering new apps and showing us all the way, keep going and ignore the criticism. You are practising being a Thought Leader without the need to blog too. - Thomas Power
What you have done is balanced out your activity between Twitter, FriendFeed, Blogging, Videos, etc. Others who would prefer you stay siloed don't like that you've diversified. Why close the door on a significant audience, like one here, to maintain an old one? - Louis Gray
What?!? You blogged your response? You're falling right into his hands. - Christian Anderson
Robert and Michael, call me paranoid but I bet you guys both organized this rant & rave together to raise some valid questions about the changing nature of the social web. I think there's a place for focused writing of blogs but I can't help thinking Robert's experiment of jumping into the fray is both bold and worthwhile. It could easily be said that M's clinging to the old for reasons like thought leadership could possibly put him in a position of being obsolete very quickly. Love both of you! - Lance Shields

Mike makes good points and he does it out of respect for Robert. These are two of the hardest working guys I've come across. Mike sees the value he is building at TechCrunch and sees the value Robert is building for Twitted/FriendFeed. As far as I know, Robert doesn't get anything for that. I don't agree that Robert's time is not well spent, but can definitely see Mike's point. - Christian Anderson
"S**gate" getting a mention here from Robert every time there´s talk of storage is better promotion than plain ads on his blog. They should be happy about that, and I´m sure pay him equally well for that. - Thomas Bøhm
Yeah, I agree with Christian that M has good points and I think this debate is very good to consider. How do we spend our time? What is truly valuable? Is Robert poorer than he used to be? ;-) - Lance Shields

Hey Robert! I hate to say this but I kinda agree with Michael on this one. I use to read you blog every day. I loved how insightful your post were. I could tell that you put a great deal of thought into your blog, and in turn, your blog provoked me to think. I like following you on friendfeed, but it is just not as thought-provoking. I have also started visiting your blog less because there is just not as much there. - Craig Fogle
I think Robert's brand is portable enough that he can survive outside of his own domain. At the end of the day, it's about engaging people through whatever means possible, whether that's your blog or FriendFeed, Twitter etc. For what it's worth, I had never read Robert's blog before I used FriendFeed. In some respects there's probably an element of Michael using Robert's popularity to drive a bit of traffic his way. Looks like it worked too. - Sam
Mike hasen’t noticed your videos, does that tell us more about Mike or your videos? - paul mooney
How about spending time where it matters to you? Maybe Mike should spend less time worrying where others spend their time. It's your time, spend it where you want. - Brett Nordquist
Your post a while back on *real* productivity, helped me a lot and I feel answers this already. Outside of your family what you want to do more than anything else is have lots of great conversations with people. FF enables you to do this more than your blog can. Honestly, I believe all these services should be merged somehow... Maybe if Friendfeed allowed for longer posts (although then it wouldn't be microblogging, but isn't Twitter for that?) people would start to move here. FF is a very young service yet: let's see how it expands and then we'll be able to choose between FF and traditional blogs. - Jordi Soler
Honestly, I feel that half the time I spend on Friendfeed could be more productively spent elsewhere. It *is* addictive, and you don't want to miss out on anything, but I've spent hours there without much to show for it. On the other hand, there are times where it's sheer genius to have that much input. - Mistletoe Glen

Obama is running a brilliant campaign and McCain is running a terrible one. I think that's telling and speaks to their mgmt skills
McCain's campaign is nothing but whining ('why does the world love Obama?'), attack ('Why didn't Obama make political hay out of wounded vets in Germany?'), and big-oil ideas ('more drilling -- in 30 years we'll start to really think about getting off the crack!'). It is amazing to watch the mainstream media cower before the GOP message machine, regardless. - JB Holston
wait a sec... isn't Obama losing according to latest polls? what in the hell are you talking about? - Noah David Simon
I think your rating of either campaign might be slightly influenced by which candidate you favor. - Michael Tefft
true, somehow McCain isn't getting any press coverage(and if any all bad), and Obama is parading around the world like he's already won. - clarke thomas
I agree (with Michael) - Aaron Myers
a little parading around is kinda welcome after 8 years of absolute crap - Marko Bon
Obama is a "hip" guy, McCain hardly knows how to pick up a phone. That's a tough challenge for a campaign office. - Juan Carlo Rodríguez
@Vincent - great managers hire great people (and the greatest managers hire people smarter than themselves in specific areas) ....I will say that I think the one thing Obama should be careful of is not assuming the role of President before the 'people' have actually elected him. It's good to go overseas and show your stuff but bad if there is the potential for the backlash of people who don't want him to assume his victory before the people have even spoken....(and yes that is a Canadians outsider POV) - leigh himel
Then why are they neck and neck and in some polls McCain leading? Just saying. You're right on the campaigns, just saying, why isn't it making a huge difference for Obama? I can't figure it out either. - Jim Kukral
McCain is too busy firing people from his campaign to actually manage it. - jcunwired
A candidate's campaign and campaign staff is akin to the cabinet and other positions when assuming the presidency. So, by this measure I agree that McCain's campaign has been a scary look at what we could expect from his administration. The relentless gaffe's by McCain show a lack of coordination by his team. If they can't get it together now - what makes us believe they could do it once they were in office? - AJ Kohn
I guess Obama's staff wasn't to blame when someone took recorded his gaffe about Guns and Religion, because, after all, his campaign is 'brilliant'. (sarcasm for those who don't think the original post in this thread was silly). - Andrew Leyden
media mgmt is key but is not the whole story. - jonathan
This is like any brand marketing campaign -- you can't be successful if the product behind the brand is faulty - Brian Sullivan
that wasn't a gaffe, people do cling to guns or religion because their lives suck. - Geoffrey Hamilton from twhirl
Marc Andreessen spent 1.5 hours w/ Obama 1.5 years ago and blogged about it http://tinyurl.com/create.php The best bit is this quote: "[MA] asked him directly, how concerned should we be that you haven't had meaningful experience as an executive -- as a manager and leader of people?" Obama replied, "Watch how I run my campaign -- you'll see my leadership skills in action." - Furqan
@Geoffrey: brilliant deduction. so if I say "people cling to Obama because they're stupid and think socialism is a good idea," that's not just as offensive to your side of the fence? Whether or not every liberal thinks Red Staters are ignorant religious fanatics (and whether or not it's true), if the candidate wants their votes, he'd better not say it. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Not JUST religious fanatics (whether or not it's true), but the space limitation prevents me from completing the list ;-) - jcunwired
It was a gaffe. Losing your job doesn't make you cling to guns or religion. It makes you drink. - Andrew Leyden
@Vincent, is it not important the people you select to run things for you. There's a funny thing called a Presidential Cabinet, and this is exactly what the future President will be doing -- choosing people to run the country. While campaign is certainly not a great comparison, it is a great way to see how a candidate chooses his closest advisors, mentors, and friends -- after all, those same people will run the country for four years. - David Adewumi

@Jim I think Obama hasn't sealed the deal with a clear majority yet primarily because (a) he's a black man and we've never elected an African-American president so that's always going to be a hurdle and is going to cut into his margins, (b) he's young and not nationally known up to recently, so he is still introducing himself to the country, especially those who don't tune in during primaries. - Christian Crumlish
Brilliant campaign? I think not! - Keith Thompson
