I love the Who. It was so cool a few yrs ago Pete was putting up vidcasts everyday from a trailer on tour, interviews, off the cuff playing. He also broadcast all the Europe Shows for free to the US. It re energized their base, got me interested again in the Who, but then Roger made him take it down bc Roger only gets performance royalties and he thought it was stealing from him, but he...

If you click on the cache link in Google, the "paid" answers are cached at the bottom of the page-- no signup required. :)
- Jeremy Felt
Yeah the cache trick is nice but isn't that a violation of Google's TOS? providing different results to the crawler?
- Bill Pennington
from twhirl
No need for the cache...if you scroll all the way to the bottom the answers are there.
- Brian Newman
Interesting... if you open the link (non-cached) in a new tab, the answers don't show, but if you follow the link through google in the same tab, the answers do show at the bottom. Weird.
- Jeremy Felt
The answers are generally way, way on the bottom and only visible if you visit the thread from Google's search results. Frustrating: yes, but there is also a lot of good information in there...
- John μller
I'm not alone. I'd like to bad about.com too.
- Paul Grav
«Interesting... if you open the link (non-cached) in a new tab, the answers don't show, but if you follow the link through google in the same tab, the answers do show at the bottom.» This is even officially allowed by Google these days, it's called "first click free" (others might call it "sort of cloaking").
- Philipp Lenssen
I feel the same way about anything from Associated Content.
- EricaJoy
CustomizeGoogle extension for Firefox (or something similar) allows user to define filters for search to make it more usable.
- Daniel Schildt
Jeremy, set up a Firefox Quicksearch bookmark for Google searches and just exclude the bad domain there, using the following string in the Properties/Location field: http://www.google.com/search... -inurl%3Aexperts-exchange.com
- Erik Dafforn
Sorry, that truncated the URL. After .com, add /search?q=%s -inurl%3Aexperts-exchange.com
- Erik Dafforn
I was able to use info from EE only recently. I would just scroll down to see the answer. Even after they'd done something to prevent that, I would still hit a link that allowed me to scroll down and read what I needed.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Totaly true. Everytime I search for JEE stuff this freaking pages pops up ...
- Marius Quadflieg
add "-expertsexchange.com" to your search query? just a thought.
- Dossy Shiobara
@dossy sometimes you have a dream to have it as permanent filter, preferably with feedback to original website that they are classified as morons by 10.000.000.000 users :)
- A.T.
I would like to do this as well, Experts Exchange is the biggest joke. Stack Overflow has everything any more... w/o hiding their answers.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
How do you configure a Custom Search Engine to exclude specific sites?
- Paul Grav
@Paul - once you've set up a CSE, follow the link that says "[Edit this search engine]" and look at the left-hand column under Control Panel for a link that says "Sites". Find the section called "Excluded sites" and then "Add Site". I think our user experience here could be better. The Custom Search Engines are incredibly powerful, but not nearly as discoverable as they could be.
- DeWitt Clinton
DeWitt, thanks for the reminder about CSE. It's an incredibly cool feature.
- Jason Wehmhoener
@Jason - thanks! Custom Search Engines are perhaps my favorite power feature that Google offers. Come to Google I/O and I'll show off something neat with them.
- DeWitt Clinton
There should really be a search experiment to do this. Exclude the follow sites from your results. SearchWiki doesn't do it AFAIK. I've thought about suggesting the search experiment at work but never got around to it. I think I shall today.
- EricaJoy
Erica: Google *does* offer a way to do this in your query. Try searching for YourKeyWord site:-siteIhate.com site:-OtherSiteIHate.com The "-" verbiage is how you tell the engine to *not* return results from those sites. Conversely, you could search "keyword site:MyFavoriteResource.com" to only return results from your intended target.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Scroll to the bottom works for me. And sometimes there's good answers. I think it's ridiculous that I have to scroll to the bottom but... for me it's not worth adding yet another extension or greasemonkey script.
- Robert DeBord
Haven't seen it in the comments, but you can always use the SaerchWiki Labs feature to remove any unnecessary results from view. I think you can go as far as 'ban' a domain.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
firefox addon which applies custom css styles to some websites will be very useful for EE. to show only questions and answer. hide all other crap from pages..
- Turkey banned Bloggum :(
How to have an answer to a question, in 110 comments. I love it when we help someone figure out something, FF exists with that underlying community feature: help. 9)
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Jason, it has nothing to do with being ugly. It has to do with them cluttering my search results with information that's behind a paywall.
- Matthew Gifford
It's a good thing they put that hyphen in there, "Expert Sexchange" is obviously not their business model!
- Ryan
Google's results have, IMO, been degrading over the years and EE is just one of the problems.
- Michael McKean
They are a PITA, show up everywhere but only display 1/2 of what you are looking for, very bothersome.
- Allen Harkleroad
Great post, Steve. I agree. I much prefer FF. Another great feature of FF over Twitter is the customizable rooms.
- Waynette Tubbs
can't say that i prefer FF over Twitter or vice-versa. i fear that twitter's simplicity is the key to its success, and adding any new features would turn me off. i was away from FF for a while, but back on again. my interest goes in waves.
- Kevin Sablan
I also think your twitter experience varies depending on whether you're a big player or someone following the big players. Robert Scoble asks for something, he gets answers. John Smith might not get the same response. FF has a much better system to allow for others to get exposure.
- Peter Spook
your post reminds me of a old presentation i did at a barcamp in austria - you should even add filtering via knowledge by social network graph to your idea - i've uploaded my presentation here: http://bit.ly/gosM
- Andreas Klinger
FF is on fire and will have success, but I'm glad you're not the PM. Maybe I just have a problem with using the word 'blog' as part of the description, just like 'microblogging' poorly describes Twitter (and the clones). Twitter is elegant and simple, and also quite superficial which I think the mainstream audience will prefer. The engagement of the somewhat_early_adopter crew now on FF seems to have you drooling, but don't mistake that as the norm.
- coldbrew
So you think it would be a good idea to have this like a big blogging platform??? i dont know... overboard a bit really I think... I would hate this place to turn into a bloody scoble blog
- Rob Sellen :o)
I can it being a center for more in depth discussion and posting than twitter. I can also see it as an almost real time blog format, which Scoble is playingn with right now. Longer blogs? Not sure yet
- Michael VanDervort
Friendfeed for me isn't a blog, it's "fflog" I COINED IT!
- orionstarr
I agree about the participation side, but "Blogging Platform" it is not, unless the text posting adds more tools.
- Jorge Escobar
If you add the things you suggest, you don't have a blogging platform, you have Tumblr.
- Rex Hammock
Rex, except Tumblr does not have the community mojo that FF has.
- Steve Rubel
from IM
If the platform were to change as you suggest, Rubel, do you think the dynamics and "mojo" would remain the same?
- coldbrew
Great article. I would say that what you describe is friendfeed is an aggregator of tumblr and twitter just on steroids.
- Russ Jackson
It might become more complicated as more text finds its way into here.
- Steve Rubel
from IM
Once I thought of just directing my current blog URL to a Facebook page and be done with it. Luckily I didn't do that. But reading you now makes me think a time may come where I might considering moving my blog -or actually my blogging activity- entirely into Friendfeed.
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
great post Steve, i think folks are sometimes too critical of the design - where if Twitter is the only comparison, it's night and day. Just for purely tracking my diggs, reddits, etc. it's useful... but that's such a small piece.
- Jason Hoch
I've been saying this since Scoble was accused of neglecting his blog for twitter & friendfeed
- sofarsoShawn
noteworthy conveniences at Friendfeed: 1) one can subclass a specialized interest and publicly share in a separate "room"; 2) one can easily incorporate single items from others by "reshare"; 3) searching under Everyone can bring up obscure but astonishing stuff; 4) resharing can be generalized in the room by subscribing to several external blogs/services; 5) an embedded player plays...

- Adriano
I think if you can manage your FF wisely you not need to check your mails anymore...
- Syed Akram
Steve! sorry to be smart assed. But I have not seen one blog post here right? They just link back to your blog imo. You are fleeing to friendfeed because of the noise ratio. I hate FF :) 3 reasons and boy there are more. The only conversation goes on with the A-listers. No conversation comes my way on FF. It does though on Twitter. Twitter gives the smaller fish a place to converse. It does not work here on FF imo. Scoble has neglected his blog by hanging out here. All just my valid opinion :)
- DC Crowley
... Mike Arrington brought this up first and he's right. FF and jsut video's for Fast company will not get Scoble the exposure he used to have. 3/. FF cost to much time to stay on top of stuff. I have a life and hallelujah a job that needs attending. The attention required is too much.
- DC Crowley
DC: you are totally wrong. Most of the conversations here happen with non-A listers and I can prove it. My "best of" is very diverse.
- Robert Scoble
Frightening, just today I have blown the dust from my FF account. It is far more flexible than twitter.
- Matthias Faller
Steve, I would *love* to see this "FriendFeed as blogging platform" happen. Ever since Facebook updated its platform, it's been hard to convince my "normal" friends to hang out @ Friendfeed because it's just too hard for them to grasp. Heck, Twitter is hard enough for many of them to understand. Here's to *selling* it as a blogging platform. Just might work! ;)
- Barbara K. Baker
"It is no accident that many of the worst periods of hyperinflation are preceded by deflation. In fiat currencies with high levels of government debt, severe cases of deflation cause a loss of confidence in the nation's currency by shrinking the economy and making the government's debt appear increasingly unsustainable. The loss of confidence then causes the flow of money to speed up as individuals become desperate to exchange cash for real goods as fast as possible, producing hyperinflation."
- Morton Fox
from Bookmarklet
'Member when I was writing about hyperinflation three months ago and someone here on FF called me a nutjob or nutball? Luckily, most of us will never see hyperinflation since many will perish during the preceding food riots...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Well, Mark, some people think I'm nuts for recommending and owning precious metals. It's not an investment. It's insurance.
- Morton Fox
You can trade me your pieces 'o eight for my turnips any time, Mr. Fox...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
The comparison is at least *implying* that hyperinflation will start within a year or so.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Frankly, I would consider food riots rather unlikely in the US for a lot of reasons. Plenty of other riots are definitely possible, though.
- Michael R. Bernstein
@Chris the sudden hyperdeflation of the US dollar will start the ball rolling. Take a good look at Zimbabwae
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Chris GAH! I can't find the link. I am still trying to understand it myself but it has a lot to do with no commercial/industrial investment because of the low interest rates, which in turn prevents hiring and GDP growth. In essence the low interest rates cause the economic recession instead of end it.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Yeah, like I said I'm still tring to work through the logic. Still can't find the link, dammit.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Chris: Suppose the American economy fundamentally fails to produce goods or services anyone (including ourselves) wants in quantity sufficient for most Americans to maintain the lifestyle we're used to. (Maybe that failure was masked by a credit bubble for a while.) Suppose also that, attempting to prop up that lifestyle, the government launches massive stimulus projects backed by dollar-denominated government debt. Eventually you get a crisis of confidence in the dollar. I think that's the theory.
- ⓞnor
Until China unlinks their currency from ours, none of this matters.
- Alex Scoble
Another paradigm shift will happen when OPEC stops using the USD as a valuation.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Chris, I think you're saying that the American economy doesn't seem as valueless as all that. I think I agree. In any case, deflation happens often enough without hyperinflation, so the whole premise of this article is like telling someone with flu-like symptoms that they have anthrax because anthrax is often preceded by flu-like symptoms. If you tell someone that, you really need to have more specific reasoning than this article gives.
- ⓞnor
Well, there is Iran threatening to flood the market with cheap oil sold in euros. You have China and Japan dumping their piles of dollars and the US economy stating that they're planning on printing notes in order to get their economy fluid. Plenty of pressures for a collapse. I think the trigger will be when the US cannot afford the monumental debt they're saddled with and default on payment themselves. That's what will be the flashpoint.
- alphaxion
don't forget that there's now a whole regiment of troops on combat ready in the case of "massive civil unrest". The US government knows something big could well go down and are prepared to deploy the military internally.
- alphaxion
Seriously people...as long as China's yuan is linked to the dollar, none of this matters. Also there's no way the US government is going to let deflation get out of control...it would seriously impact its ability to pay off debts...if deflation gets too far out of control the US government will have no choice but to start printing money and selling bonds.
- Alex Scoble
It's an interesting take, but has flaws on two fronts. First: it presumes the US will print more money...not impossible, but unlikely. Second, the Weimar example ignores strong external factors leading to the hyperinflation: particularly the London Ultimatum in 1921 and the occupation of the Ruhr in Jan 23, which caused a debt cycle and deficit in foreign currency as the Republic struggled to pay debts they were forced to pay.
- Duncan Riley
the only way the Weimar scenario could play out is if the US Government couldn't pay debt, and some how they were forced to do so.
- Duncan Riley
You mean, like if China decided to call in all those IOUs?
- Victor Ganata
Again, China can't do anything to the value of the USD until they unlink the yuan from the dollar. Until that happens all this worry about inflation/deflation is just FUD.
- Alex Scoble
Victor, yes. But likewise Weimar had no way of not paying them without say being invaded. If the US decided to default on some of its debt, we don't know what would happen, but I'd bet that there's very little way they could be forced to repay, outside of maybe economic sanctions. The problem of course is that once it defaults, the rest of the money gets cut off...but the scenario is more likely the great depression.
- Duncan Riley
This is one of those times when Duncan blocking me really messes with the conversation.
- Alex Scoble
What will really cause hyperinflation? Saying that hyperinflation is coming. Everything in the global economy is based on confidence. Confidence int he dollar, confidence in having a job next month, confidence that this or that will happen. There has never been anything more to it then that, and there never will. The people that run around saying the sky is falling are the reason the sky falls in economies.
- Geoff Schultz
Duncan: the treasury has already stated that if it has to it will print money to ease the frigidity of the money markets. And influential people in China are recommending they sell http://www.nni.nikkei.co.jp/FR...
- alphaxion
I didn't do anything to him to apologize for. If anything he still owes me an apology for being an ass to me on his blog.
- Alex Scoble
Not to mention the fact that in doing so China would be devaluing their own currency thus destroying their ability to buy anything.
- Alex Scoble
Chris, yes, but the primary issue is (more practically speaking) less the ones they hold now as much as their future purchases. The upcoming auctions will be very interesting (read: scary) to watch.
- Anthony Citrano
And Chris, to your questions about hyperinflation, it is a money supply and confidence problem that would be catalyzed by decreasing demand for sovereign US paper (no longer being seen as a safe haven nor as the world's "reserve currency"). Further, it is an open secret that the Fed has talked internally about a "new dollar" and also about the possibility of issuing lower-grade paper - and that ought to scare the shit out of all of you.
- Anthony Citrano
alphaxion, dare I say it then, but you're all f&*ked ;-) To be fair though, it depends on the amount as well. Weimar still isn't a great example: this was back in the days of the gold standard, and Weimar had to hand it's gold over in reperations. Notably the Rentenmark, the replacement currency that stopped the madness was tied to the value of real estate...might be something there. The unknown today is that the US Dollar isn't tied to anything of real value....so what would cause a big enough crisis
- Duncan Riley
in valuation to lead to hyperinflation?
- Duncan Riley
I don't think printing more money, within reason, might cause it. Debt, causing a drop in domestic production of monumental proportions (therefore increasing the reliance on imported goods) might.
- Duncan Riley
Alex: you'll find that China has been buying Euro's for memory for a best part of a year. It wouldn't be hard for them to switch out the pegging to the USD to the Euro.
- Duncan Riley
That's great, except the yuan is still pegged to the dollar. And there's no indication that the euro will fare any better than the dollar in this crisis. That's another reason why people's fears of inflation/deflation are kind of ridiculous. The American economy isn't sliding in some vacuum by itself. All the big economies are likewise sliding together. Doesn't matter though, the scary thing is that there's nothing anyone can do to protect themselves if it DOES happen...so stop worrying.
- Alex Scoble
Chris, the problem from China isn't as simple as a never ending tap though. We're already seeing a downturn in China, and millions becoming unemployed. Any cash surplus the Chinese have will soon have to be spent internally to keep the populous happy, and that restricts US borrowing. The insanity of it all is that the US is borrowing more money today, instead of pulling back. It can't go on for ever, it's simply impossible
- Duncan Riley
Yep, Duncan, at some point our debt to GDP will be too big to manage.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, true point on the Yuan. The thing that isn't being looked at much if the pricing of the USD in terms of competitiveness, and the role this might take in worsening the cycle. For example, US exports are 30-40% dearer today than July 08. That's got to hurt manufacturing even more...and maybe we get to this deflation followed by hyperinflation idea
- Duncan Riley
One of the interesting rumours (and it's a pretty wild rumour at that) is how many are looking at ditching the current concept of fiat currencies and tieing them to something that can scale. It's very conspicuous as to how so many have openly called for a "new fiscal order". What is it the tin foil hat brigade are trumpeting? carbon credits. The idea that wealth is linked to paying for carbon emissions. I can't see it working myself and I very much doubt it's anything more than fantasy.
- alphaxion
@Chris - none of my sources are conspiracy sites, nor nutjobs [fun to read, but not my thing], and you'll just have to trust me [and my record] on that. Also you are right that the Euro will die before the dollar.
- Anthony Citrano
A lot of writers don't name their sources, Chris. My sources wouldn't be very good (nor happy) sources then, would they? Trusting me is your call. Like I said I'll let my record speak for itself.
- Anthony Citrano
A simple lesson from all this: Government spending doesn't increase wealth.
- Robert Hafer
I disagree that government spending doesn't increase wealth...judicious government investments in R&D and education certainly do increase wealth. Wanton government expenditures that don't help us down the road (bridges to nowhere, for instance) certainly don't do much other than keep people employed. Although sometimes just keeping people gainfully employed is a necessary function of the government too.
- Alex Scoble
@Chris - I haven't penned one about the specific issue I raised (although I've shot my mouth off about it freely). The best I can do for you is this: Congressional staffer, mid-December, who was in the room when Fed staff floated the idea of modifying the Federal Reserve Act to allow the Fed to issue alternative paper. You can take that to the bank (if it's still open.) ;)
- Anthony Citrano
R&D spending, while useful, still doesn't create wealth. Successful transfer of new technology to the private sector does. Any Government spending is funded by taxes or debt, which removes funds from productive systems.
- Robert Hafer
You know what probably contributes the most to the "creation of wealth"? The Tinkerbell Effect. And no, I'm not joking.
- Anthony Citrano
We're talking about currency here, not elevating standards of living, which are two very different things (and I sense in your last comment you're defining wealth as the latter, not the former, in which case I totally agree with you.) What I am talking about is the idea that currency = wealth. *That* relies on the Tinkerbell Effect.
- Anthony Citrano
first, wow, this thread is still going! I started my first entry from bed at 7am. Anthony, if what you mean by the Tinkerbell effect is simply belief, then you are right. Modern currency doesn't have any ties to real value, as was the case under the gold standard,so the idea that you believe in something is just that, a belief without solid backing. Faith in a currency is in some ways what has saved the USD so far, but that faith is going to be continually tested.
- Duncan Riley
Chris, nice hypothesis, but war on who? Can the US really find a scape goat for its own mismanagement?
- Duncan Riley
It's hard to wage war when the arms dealers won't give you credit, though. Don't underestimate how much being mired in TWO futile wars has severely damaged the military might of the U.S.
- Victor Ganata
America will go to war to Iran. That will be the birth of hyperinflation.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I've been arguing vehemently for the last 3 years that Bush was on the wrong road taking us to hyperinflation instead of the promised land. Gutted to see this, wouldlove to be proven wrong :(
- Sally Church
I want to know which version of FF you have. Mine is happy on my MB 13".
- Stephen Pierzchala
it was FF3... using up about 80% of my resources. no good. on Camino now.
- Veronica
If i try to run a youtube vid on my MacBook the fans kick in, and i have to quit FF and leave it for a while to cool off. I prefer FF to any other browser, but it does piss me off sometimes, like, not playing videos from Qik and some other video sites, yet youtube is fine.. So.. It eats my Mac's brains as well, i have have 4GB of mem in it!
- Simon Wicks
True that, even on my Vista box I switched to Chrome.
- Frisley Velasquez
Weird, Fx3 is fast for me, even with all my extensions.
- Tanath
hahahahaa!! watch out for brain eating browsers!
- Susan Beebe
The Mac version at least seems to be pretty buggy for me... been driving me mad recently how often it breaks. The most annoying pair are (a) no longer allowing me to actually go to the URLs I type in the address bar; and (b) messing up style sheet loads and rendering pages without them.
- John
FF is vastly faster than its predecessor. But it's a hungry beast, too. I still jump to FF several times a day to do specific things, but Safari is my default. Definitely more fleet of foot.
- Chris Baskind
FF is very stable on XP. I have my browser up with 20 or more tabs open for days at a time with no crashes or issues. Be aware the more tabs you have open, the more memory FF will eat up. At the moment I have 23 tabs open and FF is using about 309MB of memory.
- Jeff P. Henderson
If I were you i'd stick to Safari because is fast uncluttered and easy to use
- Michael
It's so nice to hear other people experiencing the bugs I hate on here: the "can't click on url dorp down", the "fan kicking in whenever i Youtube" ugh. Will try 3.1
- anna sauce
FF3 on the Mac is a godsend. I always feel like my browsing experience is cripple when using Safari, much like IE on Windows.
- Chris Luckhardt
I have been having a lot of issues with FF3 on mac resently - and have been using Safari = LOL.
- Tony
I really hope you guys get Chrome soon. I've switched to it, and it is by far my favorite browser
- Tyler (Chacha)
It is open source, so I am not sure if Google is waiting on someone to do it - or if they will come out with Chrome for Mac on their own. Hope they do it =)
- Tony
Good to know I'm not the only one suffering from poorly designed Mozilla technology. (And this coming from someone who's always been a staunch supporter of it.)
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Couldn't be happier to hear this.Bourne rocks,he is certainly one the best action movie hero.
- Steve Chou
First 2 movies were superb. Third was the most shallow major action movie I've seen this decade.
- Christopher Galtenberg
Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass work on the 4th Bourne movie. Matt Damon is on his way to becoming the young Sean Connery. (And I guess that's not really a good thing, because he's already the young Matt Damon.)
- j1m
From the standpoint of cinematography, visual rhythm, style, sound, etc., Bourne #3 (The Bourne Identity) was one of my favorite action films of all time. And Matt Damon is perfect for the role.

Anyone who tries to make this negative will be accused of being against "family values" and the spin will be that this allowed her to spend more time with her children and also do her job and should be admired by working women everywhere.
- Trish R
It's just part of the pattern of sleaze but she'll get away with it because it's her kids and lots of people will say oh well she loves her kids
- Trevor Cook
I am with Trish R but also feel that this is not enough to "do her in'.
- Mel Buckpitt
I understand, even sympathize, that she wanted to spend more time with her children but ... you can't do it at the expense of taxpayers. It's called sacrifice, either sacrifice your time with family or your money.
- AJ Kohn
I agree, AJ, I'm not saying it's OK, I'm saying that's how it will be fed to the media to justify the story.
- Trish R
Agreed, they'll play the family and kiddie angle, but how can you spin the taxpayer paying for the kids to go to a snowmobile race or a weeks shopping in New York.... even people sympathetic to the family argument will see that she crossed the line, and abused her position
- Duncan Riley
Duncan, she DID abuse her position, but I can guarantee you a lot of people won't see it that way. Their response will be "But look how bad Barack Obama is . . ." and distract their attention away from her indiscretions. McCain supporters truly won't care.
- Trish R
My mom has 5 kids, and she had her own business (my dad had a regular job), and she was very strict about business expenses and spending it, or not spending it, on us kids. And that was a small magazine privately owned! A state? Taxpayer money? Lame.
- anna sauce
I think many folks might actually be pissed. The intent gets the 'aww, that's sweet' but they might quickly jump to the idea that they don't get to bill the government for family vacations, so why should she!?
- AJ Kohn
IMO, this clearly falls into the "ethical" category. working for gov't, charity groups, volunteering to serve on corp boards - these are all opportunities to express your values. in almost all cases, people can afford forgo expenses whenever it's a questionable item. just cuz you *can* charge it to the org, doesn't mean you should. in fact, you almost *never* should. it sends a message about your commitment and how you value the work the org. is doing.
- MikeAmundsen
Trish, true, McCain supporters wont care...she could hand out copies of Mein Kampf and they wouldn't care. But ultimately they don't matter on election day as much as undecided voters do. In a climate where corporate greed is decried, news that the VP got the taxpayer to cover shopping trips to NY with her kids is going to swing a whole range of people still sitting on the fence.
- Duncan Riley
That's not news -- it's been out there for a few weeks. But maybe AP running the story will make a difference.
- Dave Winer
@Dave - there's new reporting in there; dollar amounts, the number of trips, the nature of her claims that she brought her kids for official state business (wtf?!), and more sources for background. The early reports were speculative. This is full reporting, and it is harder to brush under the rug without a response.
- DeWitt Clinton
http://www.politico.com/news... I think this is more damaging. She's the representative of the common man and spends 150k on clothing? Oh wait... it wasn't her money...

"If your application uses the FriendFeed API, you can now show FriendFeed updates to your users in real-time using the new FriendFeed Real-time API. We're providing access to the same underlying technology that's used by the real-time view on FriendFeed to all FriendFeed developers."

This is the gamechanger for FriendFeed - just wait and see
- Ed Dale
sure it is! but hope friendfeed can scale better than twitter...
- Aziz
Bret, IMHO, instead of providing such "fantasy" features for the API, you should raise the limits you told me that you weren't able to raise some months ago... But, heh, you decide :)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Nice work guys. Keep up the innovation and stay focused.
- Louis Gray
directeur: mind sending an mail to api@friendfeed.com detailing what limits you are referring to? Sorry if we dropped something - it was likely just forgotten due to something else, but we can address your problem now with all the details.
- Bret Taylor
Nice job. I would have preferred that the term "Real-Time" be reserved for an XMPP like implementation. As of now this feature is great but it is not exactly real-time. It is polling after all. This is a massive improvement though. Great work FF crew. Keep pushing the envelope. Don't fear the fire hose!
- Rolf Schewe
Bret: Thanks for the answer, I'll send you an email ASAP with the details! Again thanks for the attention
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Rolf, this API supports "long polling" -- it's every bit as realtime as XMPP.
- Paul Buchheit
@Rolf: with long polling, you get updates as soon as we have them, so it is as real-time as XMPP, just a different delivery mechanism.
- Bret Taylor
Bret, what's real-time in the case of Friendfeed? Really? I still have the picture of an axajy widget that refreshes and sends queries... It's pulling from the server, not the other way, right?
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Gentlemen, Friendfeed 1.0 is a cool service. With RealTime API, I think we're looking at "killer app" with a huge breadth of applications. Well done.
- John Craft
So it is also dependent on the delivery on the other end I suppose. I just don't get why I get some content fast such as Twitter and some after a long delay such as Google Reader shared items.
- Rolf Schewe
Google Reader shared items are definitely not real-time.
- Rolf Schewe
From a community building perspective - this real-time is more than enough. If your a programmer designing an app with the API - here is the NUMBER 1 request - Make sure your app doesn't jump out of the stream when you comment or like something
- Ed Dale
I added Facebook today and tested to see the delay. The status message came through 1 hour later. I actually timed it.
- Rolf Schewe
@rolf: ff servers have to decide how often to crawl the feeds; they don't have the luxury of a realtime api to all of those services. if you post something to ff directly, however, you'll notice it show up immediately
- Karl Rosaen
Rolf- As Karl says, for incoming content we're at the mercy of the external providers. Our proposal for solving that side of the problem is called SUP: http://blog.friendfeed.com/2008...
- Casey Muller
Casey, suppose I write an entry and delete it just after. Will it still be in the ral-time view for other users?
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
it will increasingly be helpful to know which feeds FF does have realtime access to
- Steve Gillmor
So in essence the real-time feature is in some terms conditional on the outside services. Kind-of real-time.
- Rolf Schewe
help us to put pressure on them by listing those who have XMPP pipes in
- Steve Gillmor
directeur- Yes. Anybody (including API clients) monitoring the real-time feed will already have received the entry before you deleted it
- Casey Muller
casey can you guys publish a list of inputs with polling frequency please
- Steve Gillmor
The real innovation (sorry to insist on this) will be to process feeds on the user's level. Attention is the keyword. I DEFINITELY don't care about real-time. I want intersting stuff not fastly delivered ones... just sayin' :)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Steve, Twitter is the only service that sends updates by XMPP. All other services (except things posted directly on FriendFeed or via the API) arrive via RSS/Atom feeds, which are generally checked once every 1/2 hour. However, we also monitor several pinging services and utilize SUP to discover feed updates much faster and can often get new entries within a minute or two.
- Paul Buchheit
out of curiosity, what does the ff realtime view set the timeout to? (i should clarify: I'm talking about calls from the client JS to the realtime APIs; what's the timeout of those requests)
- Karl Rosaen
Karl, it's currently about 60 sec, but that's mainly due to concern about browser and proxy timeouts. The server responds as soon as there is an update, so there's no disadvantage to using a larger timeout.
- Paul Buchheit
@Paul, thanks, i was wondering for a comparison to the timeout you'd need to use if supporting such an api from an app engine app (where you have to respond within 10 seconds or so I think)
- Karl Rosaen
Thanks for the feedback and the links. It helped a lot. Maybe down the line we will be able to get RSS data in a little faster. The Google Reader floods can get a little heavy with the current polling interval.
- Rolf Schewe
Paul would other sources who provide XMPP be accepted? Or is Twitter exclusive?
- Steve Gillmor
Steve: We would be happy to support more XMPP services depending on the ease of implementation. It is certainly not exclusive to Twitter.
- Bret Taylor
Although I don't fully agree with the Pushing Daisies one but that probably has more to do with personal bias than anything truly grounded. To me, it's like accusing Amelie (the show's achingly obvious influence) of the same thing.
- Akiva Moskovitz
"Recession? Global downturn? You’re joking, right? For in the alternate financial universe of film these normally terrifying terms are ambiguous, unthreatening and even, in some cases, downright exciting. In Hollywood, optimists are pointing back to the huge surge in cinema admissions after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (audience figures jumped 58 per cent on the previous year) as a template for things to come. According to John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners in America, in a recent interview in these pages, the numbers don’t lie. “In the past four decades there have been seven recession years in this country, and the box office has climbed strongly in five of those years,” he said. The strongest of those years was the most recent, in 2001, when US box office receipts rose by $650 million."

I think that one difference between 1929 and today is that today we have both cheap/free internet options plus things like Netflix. I'd be surprised if movie theaters aren't hit especially hard in this downturn.
- Thomas Hawk
I agree with Thomas. And taking it one step further, the quality of home theater systems means there are fewer movies I feel the need to see on the "big screen".
- John Wright
The other thing is I think that there is a backlash against the high price of movie theaters. At least for me with a big family it's so cost prohibitive. Movie theaters should consider offering bigger discounts. Kids under 5 free, bigger discounts on kids 5-12, etc. I liked it when the AMC theater in Burbank let me bring my own food in. More theaters should do that.
- Thomas Hawk
theatres aren't owned by Hollywood. -- content is -- whether you download, netflix, or see it in theatres, it still needs to be produced.
- Prolific Programmer
yeah but I bet that they make less money on content viewed at Netflix or downloaded for free on the internet than they do in movie theaters.
- Thomas Hawk
Thanks to everyone who came out for our Friday night photowalk in Sacramento. We had about 40 or so people and near perfect weather -- just enough rain to wet the streets for those awesome neon reflections, but not enough rain to keep us from enjoying ourselves. Especially thanks to Trevor Carpenter and Tom Spaulding for helping organize and the tour of the best spots to shoot neon downtown. Many more photos coming in the weeks and months ahead.

I'm buying this. Glad they got the design right finally.

Its too bad they need that lame keyboard. I would love to see a multi touch keyboard on this. Can you blog on it?
- David Jacobs
It looks cheaper than the original, but BGR says it feels sturdier than the original and has a metal backing. For the little I read magazines, and the convenience of books (also given that I only read or reference one book at a time), I still haven't figured out a personal use case for the Kindle.
- Mark Trapp
Bah - where's the larger form factor version?
- Internet's Tad
I'm not sure this is something that'd make me think about upgrading..
- Internet's Tad
MUCH BETTER! gen 1.0 looked lame to me, so old school looking
- Susan Beebe
I'm bummed... I thought it was going to be bigger (the screen). I don't know if I like the redesign much better than the original... and why the heck did they get rid of the SD slot?? That doesn't make sense.
- Lindsay
I am surprised they left out the SD slot...bummer
- Susan Beebe
I'd have to disagree with what was said about it looking worse then the original. I think it looks better. Although, the screen does seem smaller to me.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
meh. did the screen actually get *smaller*, or is that an optical illusion from the larger bezel? the next sony reader has a touch screen + onscreen keyboard. the Plastic Logic device will blow them both away. assuming anyone can afford it :-)
- Karim
Where's the LCD side strip from the original? It was a brilliant way to compensate for the update latency of the main display. And the rubberized back of the original seems like it would be more comfortable to hold than the metal back. And no SD slot? I was waiting for 2.0 but I think I'll be getting the first one after all.
- invariant - farewell FF
I'm anxious to see if Amazon will do a decent trade-in deal. I bought the Kindle earlier this year and love it. But the 2.0 looks way better - clearly they took in all the feedback and improved the model.
- Mari Smith
I still don't see why - I can read books on my iPhone if I need to. Why do I need a Kindle?
- Jesse Stay
i love my kindle but the one problem I would really have with this model is the loss of the SD card. I have an SD card on mine and the thing is chock full of books right now.
- Justin Long
Invariant, the LCD stripe is the menu selector. When you rotate the dial a little light goes up and down the LCD stripe to pick the option from the menu or select the line of the text you want to highlight.
- Justin Long
I'm not fully convinced about switching to e-book readers in general (a larger selection of books would help with that), but this does look like something I could buy. It is a big improvement.
- Roberto Bonini
The loss of the SD slot is a real deal breaker for me right now with this version. The only thing that would change this is if this new reader was much cheaper. Unless there are also major software overhauls on Kindle 2 I'll watch for deals on Kindle 1 as 2 comes closer to launch
- Bryan
I don't know. Design is ... rounder, a bit sleeker. Still don't see a mainstream business for this though. A solution to a problem that doesn't exist. http://usedbooksblog.com/blog...
- AJ Kohn
Well, it's a solution for MY problem, which was how to get access to books where I live in Southeast Asia without having to buy and paying to have them shipped out here. Also, how to carry around a stack of books on planes. I love my Kindle. I rarely go anywhere without my Kindle. :)
- Justin Long
you guys should look into the sony reader. it's pretty nice
- Cee Bee
Yeah this "upgrade" is all kinds of terrible. That joystick seems flimsy and the design is super ugly but that isn't the really big deal. Loss of the SD card slot is the killer here. I'd like to see how Amazon will explain that one away.
- EricaJoy
IPhone Steals Lead Over Kindle http://tinyurl.com/4rmqdt "It's official: The iPhone is more popular than Amazon.com's Kindle. And not just in the obvious categories like listening to music, browsing the Web or the other applications where Kindle barely competes. Now, the iPhone is also muscling into Amazon's home turf: reading books."
- Sean McBride
Love/Hate situation here hahaha.... I like the redesign but it just looks bigger and has a smaller screen, why Amazon ..why?
- Gadiel Rivera
while the iPhone I'm sure is a great and capible device for e-books, the battery life I would think would make it hard to use it for reading, music, and as a communication device. I see the iPhone handy for notes and quick reference, but a e-book reader as a chance to move from paper to digital
- Bryan
Are we sure this is real? Is it a final version? Cuz I'm just not seeing the value-added here over the original.
- Eric P
Eric: there are a couple usability improvements (like the rounded corners, redesigned pager, keyboard, and charger), but the biggest benefit is probably that it's cheaper to produce, which would lead to cheaper prices. If they came back with a Kindle that cost $50 to $150 less, that may be the biggest value-add feature of all.

From March 9th, 2008 Bristol Palin (far right) appears pregnant in this picture but her mom (GOP VP hopeful) claimed the baby was her own. Why would anyone go this far? Perhaps because Mom is so religious and such an extremist that she is unwilling to accept that her own daughter had sex at such a young age, without protection, out of wedlock and was thus unable to justify having an abortion.

I don't know. I feel like if they went to such great lengths to cover it up, they wouldn't have let their daughter be photographed in ANY way during her pregnancy. But it's a very odd story....

What petty little people you are. Instead of coming up with a real argument you use character assassination and unsubstantiated drivel written on the Daily Kos blog.
- Chris Mayer
Not saying I think this is true or not, but you guys should realize that this is definitely not as "whacko" as one might think for families with certain beliefs. Even moreso for a family in the public eye.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
people should be checking their skeletons in their closets before condeming *anyone* for what they have done in their personal life. Regardless of the fact that she is now in the public eye her beliefs - right or wrong - are her's. If you are going to find fault with the woman then do it based on her political career - as limited as it might be.
- Steven Hodson
I would like to also state again that I understand this is a rumor and its an extremely far fetched one at that. But the story is so amazing due to several supposed facts or big 'ol coincidences.
- Andrew Baron
Steven, this happened during her tenure as Governor of Alaska.
- Ed Kohler
from twhirl
So if true, will the child grow up not knowing his sister is actually his mom?
- Rodfather
The real story is not the whacky rumor, but rather if how this baby is delivered is true, then she is a totally uncaring woman when it comes to having this child. She chose to fly when in a very late stage of pregnancy, which could have caused the premature delivery, she chose to go to the event after she was leaking amniotic fluid, she chose not to go to a Dr. after the event, but rather to get on another 8 hour flight with a stop, and then she drove to an out of the way hospital. Insane!
- Brad Nickel
Oh, and now she's taking a job that will take all of her time away from her family and her new special needs baby. Hello? Family values?
- Brad Nickel
Being as the baby has Down's Syndrome, and it's several orders of magnitude more likely in a 43 year old mother than a 16 year old, I'm thinking this is B.S., but hey, that's what people said about the National Enquirer stories about John Edwards last year.
- Jason Carreira
Brad - "Since she has a chance to change the world it is ok to leave the family" Micheal Medvid.
- Russellreno
Steven - when she is trading on the child to gain votes, it's not a personal issue any longer. Not that I particularly think much of the rumor in the first place.
- Alix Whitmire
Wow, just reading up on the water breaking and then flying thing. I mean, it's medical, it's personal stuff. I wouldn't want *my* medical stuff dragged into the open. Yet ... it does seem rather reckless. I'm hoping we just don't know the whole story - maybe she did it all under doctor's orders. Maybe she *needed* to get to a specific doctor. All that said, I remember my Kaiser classes - water breaks - you get to the hospital ASAP. *sigh*
- AJ Kohn
@Steven - Her career is based on those beliefs.

Oh, no, there's plenty of good policy things to criticize her for, as well as her experience, or lack thereof.

AJ -- making a speech and taking a long flight after one's water breaks, combined with all the other peculiar facts, doesn't prove anything -- but it sure does sound strange as hell. Perhaps there is a reasonable explanation. I've never heard of a similar situation before.
- Sean McBride
BTW - I feel very sorry for Bristol. She certainly never asked to have her name dragged around like this. I don't like Palin's politics but lets keep our humanity.
- AJ Kohn
Noah -- just think how crazy it would be to claim that the 9/11 anthrax attacks were a false flag attack which came from within the American government. Wait a minute: that's what the crazy conspiracy theorists at the FBI are claiming.
- Sean McBride
I hate conspiracy theories. That said, as far as I've seen, the evidence lines up in a way that allows this to be possibly true. And I'm one of those odd libertarian types. I'll let the media dig into this.
- Ben Parr
@Sean, I think it proves she has poor judgment whatever the reason she used for endangering her child's life. This is the woman that could be a heartbeat away.... Poor judgment by McCain and by her. One big bundle of irresponsibility.
- Brad Nickel
Ben, you articulated my thoughts exactly.
- Sarah Austin
That's really grasping at straws. Very silly.
- Dave Roth
Personally, I think this would have to rank of the highest order of conspiracy to be true. Not even taking into account the sheer craziness of someone trying to go through with such a cover-up. Lastly, I don't know about where everyone else lives, but I see plenty of high school girls here that certainly have a similar look...and they ARE NOT pregnant. Just pudgy in the middle high school girls who don't know how to dress well enough to compliment their figures.
- JA Castillo
Brad -- if the current published stories hold up about the speech and long plane flight which followed the breaking of water, not only did she display poor judgment -- she is reckless to the point of insanity. Yet one more of dozens of reasons why I couldn't possibly vote for her and McCain.
- Sean McBride
How the heck does this give any credible information to the issues surrounding the election? Give me a break! I'm sick of this "because she's a Republican we can't like her" stuff - whatever happened to looking at the issues she supports and doesn't support, her reasoning behind them, and then criticizing in true analytical fashion if she's wrong. These guys are politicians - they can't afford to change their opinion. We can.
- Jesse Stay
My wife says that from what it looks like (photos, etc) author is right about who had delivered baby. Also she said *too many* factors which should make her visibly pregnant were not, and hence IF she were pregnant at the time any _average_ woman with 2-3 deliveries experience near her (she is governor) would notice. That said, I think she will get share of female voters who gone trough similar or supportive for "mom covering daughter" scenario.
- A.T.
@Jesse: This is soap opera stuff. And I don't like Palin because of her politics, and her use of power as governor. However, politicians do change their opinion. Both candidates have done that. 'Flip-flopping' isn't necessarily bad. I'm okay if they stand up and say, I got it wrong before, I've learned. Has 8 years of 'admit no fault' inured us to this learning concept? I hope not.
- AJ Kohn
AJ, that's an excellent response - I'm tired of the soap opera stuff. As an independant I'm trying to learn the facts - this stuff just makes the side that's promoting it look bad. (I would say the same thing if it were the Republicans attacking Biden in a similar manner)

In another article on a related topic, her stance on abortion was pressed and apparently she believes that even someone who is raped, must have the child. This is a very extreme view for most people who are pro-life. Usually they feel there are certain situations that would make it morally okay to have an abortion. http://www.dailykos.com/storyon...
- Andrew Baron
@Jesse: Well, each party has these nasty elements unfortunately. I personally feel the right is more vicious, but then again, I lean left so I could be biased. And because I'm pro-choice (particularly for rape and incest) and anti-gun Palin doesn't mesh with me right off the bat. The use of her power for the dairy plant and in the firing of Monegan and severance for Kopp all worry me. These things, coupled with her inexperience and McCain's age make me far too nervous.
- AJ Kohn
The Amazing thing is Rush Limbaugh predicted exactly this kind of attack the day Palin was announced. Is he smarter than he gets credit for, or is the Left that predictable?
- Robert Hafer
AJ, Andrew, those were both great responses - now we're getting down to the raw positions and where we can have an opinion on the subject. AJ, personally, I'm with you - I put it in just the opposite way though. I'm pro-life, except in the case of rape or abuse or extreme circumstance.

Wow, here daughter does look pregnant in those photos.
- Mike Reynolds
Lefties are so damn predictable. Big tent my ass.
- David Risley
@Sean - you keep walking right into the brick wall that is the "experience / qualification" issue, seemingly impervious to the damage it will do the Democrats. If McCain is a fool for selecting a running mate light on qualifications and experience, what does it say about the Presidential candidate with inarguably LESS experience and arguably FEWER qualifications for the highest office in the land.
- Forrest Cox
And if I'm a Democrat, I find myself in a bit of a quandry if I choose to pay close attention to stories such as these about the opposition's VP candidate while ignoring the equally outlandish-but-seem's-to-bear-some-truth-type character assassination stories about my own Presidential pick (Wright, Ayers, etc., etc.). Remember how far the "murder lists" and similar Clinton-related urban legends got the Republicans? There ain't no gold in them thar hills m'friend. Only pain, for everyone involved.
- Forrest Cox
Better to win on the battlefield of ideas - that goes for both sides.
- Forrest Cox
I read this yesterday, as much as it sounds far fetched, look at the pics of her at 7mths and 8 mths. Look at the flight she took from Texas to Alaska while allegedly leaking embryonic fluid. If this story isn't true, then she's borderline negligent in the actions she took while pregnant.
- Duncan Riley
@Jesse: I would likely make a 'pro-life' decision myself but still think folks should have the right to choose. It does make me a little nutty when a pro-life proponent is against contraception eduction and gay adoption. Seems a bit cake-and-eat-it-too to me.
- AJ Kohn
@Forrest: McCain has seniority and length of service. Experience is subjective. As Senator Obama sits on more committees then McCain, they have similar absent voting records if you factor in campaigning, and Obama has been quite active in sponsoring bills.
- AJ Kohn
AJ, I agree - the whole "Pro-Life/Pro-Choice" issue isn't exactly cut and dry. I hate the terms, myself because it's as if there are only 2 positions to choose from.
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
@AJ - Philosophically speaking this may not be the case, but in practice the notion that "experience" is purely subjective is patently absurd. If interpretation isn't ultimately subject to right & wrong, why all the fuss? The only time you try to interpret experience in purely subjective fashion is when you dislike associated objective evidence that would otherwise color your decision. To then try to present such a judgment in an objective manner gives us ridiculous statements like your comparison above.
- Forrest Cox
It also explains a great deal about the left's infatuation with Obama.
- Forrest Cox
@Forrest: Sorry. But it's not philosophical. There are plenty of folks who have more time on the job who clearly don't have more experience. Let's be clear, I'm giving McCain the tenure and seniority. For time served, he wins. But I believe many of us have personally had experiences where we've accumulated a wealth of experience in a short time. Perhaps you have not been so lucky.
- AJ Kohn
@Jesse: Yes, it's a sticky issue. Folks like me who support the right to choose are often painted as anti-life. I struggle with the issue and, as I've said, likely wouldn't choose it myself.
- AJ Kohn
@Forrest: BTW - I'll even give you that McCain has more 'experience'. I simply believe Obama has enough experience to be President and that his platform is the best one for this country.
- AJ Kohn
What a biased load of BULLSHIT! If it was Obama's daughter or Biden's daughter, would you even THINK of posting such a wacko load of CRAP? I'm guessing not! I don't know who I'm voting for yet but it sure as hell ISN'T a child of the VP nominees - leave the girl alone!

Jesse -- if the Palin camp doesn't produce medical records to refute the story within the next few days, it is probably going to go huge -- as big as the John Edwards story at least. Based on what I've read so far at Daily Kos, probably no refutation is available, I would prefer that the mainstream pay little attention to all stories of this nature, but I don't own and control the mainstream media.
- Sean McBride
Jesse -- you are completely missing the point. I have kids. I wish stories like this received much less attention. But there is a good chance that this story is going to go huge in the MSM unless Palin is able to knock it down immediately with the relevant medical records. Take up your complaints with the MSM, not me.

Its ugly, but the record shows the Republicans leading by far the race to the bottom in this dirty campaign. That's pretty common. I dont mean to be playful here, and Im still not advocating the rumor, but I still think this new news does nothing to dispel the rumor.
