"Geez, I took 15 shots of these girls. They sent the watch dog over to ask me not to take anymore pics. So much for goodwill ambassadors." - Russellreno via Bookmarklet
Public space or public figures or not, generally I'd defer to common courtesy and not take photos of people not prepared to be photographed. Or, at least, switch from a stealth stance to introducing myself and asking for a photo op. Then again, I guess this is why I'm not a very successful photographer! - Ryan
Ryan - I also follow that advice. These gals were posing for me during the game and smiled the entire time. At the end of the game they changed the rules and I felt awful. - Russellreno
Thanks for replying, Russell. The context helps. Maybe distance makes the difference? How far away were you for these grumpy shots? A zoom lens definitely ups innate suspicion. - Ryan
I was behind there roped off area. Maybe two hundred feet. I was using my 70-200 IS L lens. I put my camera down to wait 10 seconds while their supervisor walked toward me. I assured her I was leaving. - Russellreno
Russell: I was shooting video for a cable show inside a nightclub, wading through the dance floor for B-roll. In the midst of dudes mugging for the camera, girls putting their freak into overdrive any time I got near, and random buzzed-out drunks, one group of three girls held up their hands and said "We don't want to be on camera!" When you say you felt awful, I know the feeling. That sensation of accidentally making someone uncomfortable. In seconds, you go from Regular Dude to Creep. Unpleasant. - Roger Benningfield
Roger - Yes. During the same game as the photo I had made eye contact with another young women who gave me the high sign with her eyes. She was 20 ft down and on the railing from me. A much younger girl near me called me on what I was doing. She was uncomfortable and not even in my camera's direction. I spoke to her for a few minutes and wandered down to speak with the high sign women. Three minutes later security came, and I know the younger girl called them out. Security was cool. - Russellreno
Bad cop, no donut, apparently a police officer with the Coral Gables Police Department forced yet another photographer to delete her images on her memory card. Unfortunately for him, she knew about file recovery software. - Thomas Hawk via Bookmarklet
I was in coral gables this weekend - I can totally see the cops doing this. There are tons of them around and they have a holier than thou attitude. - Zach Landes
@Brian .. think again - and it's only going to get worse - Steven Hodson
Coral Gables cops are assholes most of the time. They pull people over for going 4 mph over the speed limit - Lindsey Smith
Oi. I used to really not enjoy going out there. South Beach police officers are even worse. I got a $200 ticket one time for having turn indicator lights that were, I swear to God I'm not exaggerating, "the wrong shade of yellow." - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Law is very cold and deadly when the spirit that was behind making it goes missing in it's enforcement - Mark Forman
Why are the cops so hostile towards photographers in general these days? I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing something illegal, but talking on a cellphone? What's next? A beating if you take a photo of him riding the bike? And then people think police officers in third world countries are bad... - Mirko
Just another cop with a hard on for power and authority. Oh wait a minute that's ALL cops! - Toby Graham
Toby: It's not all of them. A *lot* of them, yes. Too many, definitely. But not all. - Roger Benningfield
Igor, I know it is a typo but a "cup having Sex with a Cow!" sounds interesting in and of itself. haha. - Kreg Steppe
I can get it (although I don't condone it) when it happens here in Brazil, due to the cops' stress and low wages (just over 300 dollars a month). But in the USA, there's just no excuse. - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
We all need to demand more public wi-fi for just this kind of crap. With something like the Eye-fi card pictures can be immediately uploaded to the internet as they're taken. I love the way the photog retrieved the deleted file though. :) Too bad no one was live-casting on qik or ustream though. I'd guess most cops have no clue about those sorts of software either. We have lots of tools to use against this crap - let's band together and start using them! - Tad - just Tad
I've had this done to me. In Chennai, India. I didn't photograph in public for about a month after that (Imagine, I was 16 then) - Yuvi
When I am approached my the police or security I agree with them then leave. Live to fight another day. - Russellreno
@Russelreno: Why? If you are not doing anything wrong, why not at least ask them to clarify what they think you are doing that is unacceptable, rather than just agreeing and leaving? - Jeremy Brooks
@Donato: That is a great name! sudo rm -fr "Officer Friendly" - Jeremy Brooks
I'm shrieking and throwing good china at twitter right now. the bastard. - Erin Kotecki Vest
Can't until their mobile client works better on Blackberry. Currently, I'm disconnected from FF when I'm mobile - which is a lot. Twitter has Twitterberry so when Twitter is semi-working, I'm still connected. That's a missing piece for Friendfeed. - Aaron Brazell
The mobile component of Twitter is still the winner for me. This is better for conversation, but still not really intended for true status. - Jared Smith
@technosailor - Now that I've started work on Blackbird, I could clone it for FriendFeed's API - got a suggestion for a good name? :-) - Dossy Shiobara
@Dennis... I have. Gotta remember a remote key? I don't think so... the font-size also looks ridiculous on the blackberry and makes it hard to read, much less follow conversations. - Aaron Brazell
@queenofspain - yeah, "BlackFriend" isn't the first name I'd use, LOL. FriendBerry isn't exactly great, either. BlackFeed? Uhh... - Dossy Shiobara
I'm trying, but I need a Twhirl type program that works for FF. - Summer
FFtoGo works well, better than FF on the iPhone. Still needs "hide" though. - Thomas Hawk
You can change the colors pretty easily with the Stylish Firefox extension. The appropriate style is at http://ungroundedoutlet.com/mi... (I can't add it to userstyles.org right now as that site is not working) - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
"BerryBuddy" ...but it sounds like one of my daughter's Strawberry Shortcake dolls - Erin Kotecki Vest
Now that I have SMS gateway via Post2FF, the only thing I'm missing is WAP browser support (aka mobile) and the rest of my friends from Twitter. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Dennis, I don't have an iPhone/iTouch. Neither do most people. Welcome to real life. - Aaron Brazell
@itsinsider - Cool names, but FriendFeed's "mascot" isn't a bird (like Twitter's), is it? - Dossy Shiobara
Only thing I dislike is the remote key when signing in. That and having to scroll to find new tweets. I think there should be an SMS option. - Les via fftogo
Agreed. Also, if you don't like the Friend Feed web interface, try Twhirl - Matthew Davidson via twhirl
Hey James, thanks. I knew about Stylish but the code for friendfeed works well. - Michael Tefft
@Dossy his other app is Blackbird, hense the bird thing. - Susan Scrupski via twhirl
I do use Twitter via the SMS interface and would want to have that functionality still. - Joe Magennis
@Aaron - also works fine on S60 mobile with standard web client. Just checked with Nokia N95. Quite a few people have those along with 10+ million iPhone peeps + however many iTouch peeps. - Dennis Howlett via fftogo
I've done my part, haven't logged into twitter in a month. - Jason Kaneshiro
I am all for it if I can get people to move over - twitter is driving me absolutely nuts - at the same time it helped me make some awesome new connections just this week. Love/Hate defined. - Tony via Alert Thingy
I'm one of Twitter's biggest fans, and it's driving me up the wall today. I need to make sure FF could replace the "feed hub" functions and more importantly the mobile access I have to Twitter tho - Doug Haslam via twhirl
I've added a link to FF on my blog bio - Andy Roberts
Until FF or Pownce, Jaiku, and Plurk have SMS capability, Twitter is the way to go - Glenn Batuyong via twhirl
How about naming it "Grackle"? A fine shiny resourceful bird found in the south that apparently have no fear of lawnmowers as they used the agitated state of the lawn to find things to eat... - Aron Michalski via fftogo
I find it very interesting that this article appears in the Financial Times. Definitely more interest in this new platform is coming from the Business community; until recently FriendFeed was only visible for the more IT oriented people IMO. - Jeroen De Miranda
Just installed Stylish and suddenly Friendfeed is a much nicer place to be. - Roger Benningfield
Is it genuinely just me who has constant crashes with FF3 then? Even after clean reinstalling twice, it falls over five or six times a day. - Robin Cannon via Alert Thingy
Hasn't crashed for me once. Quite the contrary, FF2 has been the one crashing on me. - Andrew Dobrow
Robin, which sites does it crash on ? I find that this always depends on where you browse - Bwana McCall
Its been a memory hog for me. And it has frozen a few times. I wish it was all roses like it seems to be for some. - David Risley
Robin, FF3 crashed on me repeatedly up until b3. The RC1 (I haven't upgraded to RC2 yet because I dread playing the broken Extensions game) has been release quality from day one for me. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, RC2 was a pretty easy transition, and there is now a bunch of beta extensions all set up including Greasmonkey, Del.icio.us, and Tab Mix Plus, not to mention it has been totally stable for me. - Andrew Dobrow
I'll check it out, Andrew, as soon as Vista finishes sharing three enlistments which is bringing my workstation to its knees. - Akiva Moskovitz
Ooooooh! Tabs Mix Plus? That was one major reason I was holding off. - Sean Hanna via twhirl
Yup they have a Dev version out now which works with the FF3 RC - Andrew Dobrow
I'll probably jump to FF3RC2 this weekend. - Nathaniel Payne
I'm still on K-Meleon 1.15. Old reliable and I know where the problems are at least. - Morton Fox
I am about to install FF3 next to FF2 - dual config - with 2 profiles.... keep your FF2 functionality and test drive FF3 at the same time! BE SURE TO SETUP A NEW PROFILE to do this... otherwise augh! http://support.mozilla.com/en-... - Susan Beebe
I'm running on the same profile, and working beautifully still :-) It's really a dream. - Andrew Dobrow
I have pretty regular crashes. Even in rc2 on both my XP machine and Vista machine. But I like it anyways. - Geoff Schultz
Wow no kidding? Everyone is telling me to create a 2nd profile or else i'll loose all my add-ons, etc. hmmm living dangerously! - Susan Beebe
Well if you still plan on using FF2, you might want to create a dual profile. - Andrew Dobrow
I've always wanted to stick a camera in a glass box tied to helium balloons... - Here's... possible248!
Aerial photography is something that gets a fair amount of coverage in Make magazine. In fact, one of the projects in the first issue was kite photography. http://www.google.com/cse?cx=0... - Brooks Bishop
Rob - Iwonder if that fact that your following 20,000 odd people has just a tiny little bit to do with the Twitter noise ... I wonder if you used it like most do - to follow people you have an interest and relationship with - you'd get a more real twitter experience - Ed Dale via Alert Thingy
You are all about the noise Robert - you follow so many (which is cool) it will of course be noisy. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Twitter is noisier, but teething is more imperative. Poor thing. You should both get some sleep! - Lucretia Pruitt
It is a how long is a piece of string question - but i think the twitter experience of someone following 20000 is going to be very differnt to someone who follows 100. A lot of people follow everyone because you appear to - i understand why you do it - but I wonder if it does not defeat the purpose for most... - Ed Dale via Alert Thingy
Ed, I think Robert's point is that "the purpose" is relative. For a lot of people, Twitter is a way to keep track of people they're already interested in and have relationships with. /I/ find that the signal-to-noise ratio gets higher the more I follow. I haven't jumped into it like Robert has, but my nearly-500 followees give me a pleasant amount of signal, even if the noise alone exceeds the timeline volume of the "average user". - Chris Anthony
I ran into the comment length limit! I wasn't sure there was going to be one. - Chris Anthony
It's true that there are going to be users following thousands of others just because Robert does, but that's a risk anyone takes. Lots of people are going to buy a camera because Ashton Kutcher has one; lots of people are going to see "Indiana Jones IV" because Roger Ebert likes it. One of the risks of being an influencer is having people follow you and then disagree, and there's really nothing you can do about that. - Chris Anthony
Our wee one's just getting to the teething stage too. Yay! - Chris Nixon
If your little one is anything like my last one. I would say the baby is noisier just about all the time. I disliked teething, always had a frozen something at hand. Good luck. - Jeff B
Given how much it hurt when my wisdom teeth came through, I'm not surprised they scream so loud. Maybe a mute button should come as standard? - Rosemary Slosek via Alert Thingy
Who's for making a Dad Room on Friendfeed? - Chris Nixon
Maybe i'll join the dad room..one of these days - Ben Borges via fftogo
my brother-in-law is a dentist, and suggests that it's a good thing this happens when we're infants, because nerve signal analysis suggests that if it happened to adults, we'd kill ourselves rather than endure the pain - TimTheFoolMan via twhirl
I'm about to go through this with my 5-month old. - David Risley
Robert, rooms are in the same namespace as users. You snatched up scobleizer! Pox! - Mark Trapp
Just out of curiosity I punched in your name about 20 minutes ago, Robert, and it was available. Seems not everyone is observing proper netiquette when it comes to their fellow FriendFeeders. - Robert Stevens
I thought you grabbed them all. I only saw one left, but I left it alone for you. Figured people were sort of being courteous that way. - shaun mclane
that sucks, now how could Friendfeed prevent this from happening ? - vruz
maybe they are saving them for you. I tried to get scobleizer to save it for you but it had already been taken. Maybe ff is saving scobleizer for you as well as I was pretty early in the great friendfeed landgrab of 2008. - Thomas Hawk
Ban humans from using its service, or change its TOS to allow for trademark or identity disputes. Like people have been alluding to, this is very much the name grab the domain name system experienced in the 90s. - Mark Trapp
can I reserve a name, and then hand it off to its rightful owner later? how? - Bruce Williams
To be fair to FriendFeed, it's impossible to think of every scenario...but at the same time, it doesn't look like they made *any* rules at all...Putting rules into place after the fact will probably cause a stir. - Chris Rossini
Hmm, I can't get to Scobleizer or RobertScoble. Says those aren't available. Ahh, I see Mark Trapp just answered why that happens. Can't have rooms be the same as names. - Robert Scoble
I hate that someone would grab a room with someone else's name, but as for squatting, parking etc it's nothing new.. I do it on twitter for future projects (I think I have 2 now). - Brad McCrorey
I was gonna say! There is no problem until people start refusing to transfer over rooms with obvious ownership claims by others. Just taking a name, depending on intended use, isn't necessarily a bad thing. BTW, currently, "transfering" rooms does not seem to be possible. Leaving a room doesn't stop you from being an Admin, just delists you as a member. - shanebe
Own Idea: Scoble, Scobleizer are reserved by FF team. They collected names like Turkey, England, Scoble, etc.. - Erhan Erdogan
Whoops, hopefully that can be rectified. Can someone else be made an admin? - Vince DeGeorge
"collected names like Turkey, England, Scoble, etc.." HA! - Andrew Dobrow
The Secondary Thomas Hawk effect. Yesterday about 20 people felt the Thomas Hawk effect first hand. When someone subscribes to me now I try to go to their stream and favorite some of their photos. The Secondary TH effect is noticeable when i review the new subscribers favorites. Some of the new favorites are those that TH introduced on FF. - Russellreno
I know the "Thomas Hawk" effect tooo.. I was mentioned in # 10 yesterday in his blog. This picture of you is awesome.... where is this taken? Beverly Hills view looking down on LA street scene? - Susan Beebe
@Susan - This is TH> "Foggy night tonight in San Francisco." - Russellreno
I've been using twhirl primarily so I haven't been to the site. Lots of people have been complaining about the slowness. Hasn't hit me yet as I'm using the API interfaces and Jabber primarily. - Bwana McCall
"for quickly"? What, am I on crack? Jesus. - Andrew Dobrow
Haven't fooled with the API yet today. - Andrew Dobrow
There's a delay posting tweets through the Twitter API too. twhirl probably uses a separate thread to post to Twitter in the background. That's something I can't do yet in TwitVim. - Morton Fox
But nevermind. My FFeedVim plugin is halfway there so I can post my lunch tweets to Friendfeed. :) - Morton Fox
So how to I unhide Twitter in the friends tab. - Andrew Dobrow
“FriendFeed needs rich edit tools or a greasemonkey script to add rich editing into comment posts. Would be helpful for bolding, italicizing, linking, etc.”
I would be happy with line-breaks, bold, italics and url pretty links, maybe bulleted/numbered lists too. All that could be done REALLY easily with a Textile type format... - Lindsay Donaghe
Don't you think it would be to "spammy" then? Spam links everywhere. What they really need to do first is a mobile version. - Svartling
