This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- Kevin Pedraja
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
My like is the last one so far :) - 509 afaik
- getalifejerk
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)

I was thinking of installing win 7 RC but have decided against
- David
Anyone else watch Carpool? Heard Leo is the next guest, filming Weds, according to Robert Llewellyn - worth looking out for if your are a LL fan. http://www.llewtube.com is where it will be found, among other places.
- Bigrac
Leo seems really HYPED and fast talking today, more than normal. Whoa! at least through KFI it seems faster.
- David
I have a really old hp/compaq nc8000 and windows 7 runs great, the only driver I had issues with is the sd card reader, otherwise everything else works great
- Brian Tiede
@David why did you decide against Win 7 RC1
- Mike
im running win 7 on an old AMD 2700+ with 768MB ram. Surprisingly runs well
- Mike
I have noticed a few little bugs, but I am hoping that they will go away with the final version
- Brian Tiede
Why can't we hear the person on the phone?
- Iestyn Lloyd
Caller audio is muted at request of the radio stations.
- archaictree
Oh! Guess I'll listen to the podcast then. Bye
- Iestyn Lloyd
psst... caller audio available on Ustream (don't tell anyone though, OK? this is just between us...)
- Thomas James
@Thomas James: Leo reads the feed :)
- archaictree
I know. Leo is actually aware that it comes through on Ustream, but I think it's too complicated to rewire the system so it doesn't (for the time being, at least...)
- Thomas James
Of course, if I could listen on the radio I would, but all the US stations block their streams for Canadian IP addresses. Leo needs to get on more stations up here (only one so far, I believe).
- Thomas James
Leo, I have a problem! I have just installed Windows 7 RC (I don`t have the taskbar icons combined, I uncombined them) and I also installed Windows Live Messenger, When I open Live there are two icons, one that says Windows Live Messenger, and one that says my user name (my status) when I close the Live windows (but still have it running) the Windows Live Messenger icon goes away, but the one that shows my name (my status) is still there. How do I get rid of that?
- Dakota O'Neill
Hi Leo. I'm a recent switch over to a Mac. I was wondering if it was beneficial to partition my hard drive like I would in Windows to have all my data in one partition and all my os files and apps in another? Any suggestions?
- Derek
Good description of hard drive size measurements Leo. 1024 is the key to explaining the issue.
- Chris Heath
When I got that error, I tried restoring on a different computer, my laptop, and that worked.
- Matthew
I've been using the KMPlayer on Patrick Norton's recommendation for a few months now Leo. It's basically like VLC but a bit better to me in the UI department. (I don't think I've tried the new VLC yet though)
- Chris Heath
DFU is hold the home and power button for 10 secs, and then let go of power and hold on to home for about 8 secs

I wouldn't say that 'google is the only one that matters' but if you're at your best for google, then you won't need to worry about other search engines
- Chris Heath
The best FM transmitters, IMHO, are the ones that auto search for the clearest reception. -almost a must-have feature-
- Chris Heath
"Some of the new features that have been added to Open Office 3.1 are antialiased drawings to smooth the edges of graphics, replying to notes, improved grammar checking, hyperlink management and sorting, control of slideshow media, macro support for Open Office Base, relative database paths, better internationalization for Hebrew and Arabic plus performance improvements (read our Speed up Open Office article for even more tips on how to improve the speed and performance)."

Nice, I use this at home a lot but do run into some problems porting it over to Word regarding footnotes, hope thats fixed in this version
- Mark Edmondson
I don't know about you guys, but I like Office 2007 UI. I find it to be very easy to navigate and use. OpenOffice feels like MS Office's ugly brother, but I am sure it will get better in time.
- Artem Daniliants
from IM
please tell me when am I getting the ribbon UI?
- Lakshman Prasad
I'm with Artem above. MSO2K7 FTW. MS is miles ahead of OO.o in terms of UI. It's worth paying for IMO.
- LANjackal
O2K7's ribbon UI is really, really confusing for people who've grown up with 2k3 and prior. I can understand that for many tasks it can be faster over time, but I see people all over my school and various offices who bumble through the menus every single time even after 2 years of use. That + .docx etc. in environments where you can't install the compatibility pack = angry users
- mjc
did they add the view/outline with complete features? Is the only reason I still use Word....I am ready to switch if they did
- bonuck (e gli associati?)
thanks for the hint. Time for another huge download, I assume
- Thorsten Matzner
Thorsten, I guess. I remember I had to download the whole thing last time they released any update. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
I've sworn off menus thanks to the ribbon in MS Office 2007. It's so much easier to find and remember where functionality is than in 2K3, it's not even funny.
- Chieze Okoye
Cool! This means that the Mac port NeoOffice is going to get even better! It has worked well for me since last August, and has never crashed or caused anyone using MS Office to see any weird formatting from my end. UI-wise, iWork is just splendid though, and I'm going to ante up for the full paid version rather than the 1 month trial one of these days.
- Siddharth Deb
Love OO. Just want them to have a version of publisher.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
I love Open Office...Well open source-period. But those guys have allowed me to be a professional without having to rely upon MS. Thanks for letting us know about this, I plan to head over and download mine this week!
- Benin Brown
If it was someone actually participating then yeah it'd be a big deal. But Oprah? not really. Its impressive if someone shoots some video on a Flip and posts it on Vimeo and gets a million views. But a million people watching CSI? not so much
- William Kapes
I agree with @kenyaoa, would be news if she followed back and joined in the conversation. For Oprah, twitter is just another bullhorn.
- Jon Winters
Cause she is only following 11 people out a million. Just shows how stuck on her self she is.
- orionstarr
Orion, Twitter makes that very hard for someone like that. We have a few accounts like that on SocialToo, and Twitter only returns follower data for them 1 in every 30 times, and even then gives huge problems. And then there's the "you can only follow 1,000 people per day" issue Twitter causes. Oprah would never ever be able to follow all those following her at the rate they are following her.
- Jesse Stay
Actually she got most of those followers NOT because she's Oprah, but simply because she is on the recommended follower list. That's why this is not a big deal. If you get a million organically on Twitter that STILL is a very big deal. Only a handful of people have gotten to 100,000 organically. Twitter really screwed up the importance of follower numbers.
- Robert Scoble
It stopped becoming a big deal when the web celebs were getting SMOKED by tv/movie celebs
- Jeff Smith
What's different about her Twitter stream than a press release or her website? That's another thing that bugs me about these celebrities on Twitter.
- Trish R
Jeff: that's actually not true. The reason they are smoking us is because of the recommended follower list. Mike Arrington had fewer followers than I did before he got put on that list. Today he has 500,000 just a couple of months later.
- Robert Scoble
it just seems twitter has changed, celebs use it because it is a fad i feel. When twitter to me used to mean direct communication with people of all types. celebs or not. right?
- orionstarr
Yesterday I was watching some news network the anchor was like... I need to get my twitter up and tweet. It was just kind of pathetic IMO.
- orionstarr
yeah, getting organic followes of 1M is a graet achievement. But, the pity is that they are back into the pits..as the person is on a one way tweetstreet.. some foo diffierent media
- Peter Dawson
But, if you don't follow her, you don't see her tweets assuming there are any, and a news piece like this, if indeed it really is news in the real sense of the word, is the only way you get hear about it, what's the big deal? And apologies for the overly long sentence there.
- Gilbert Harding
from BuddyFeed
Hurray. So. Any real important things happening in the world? ;)
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
sort of like twitter being down now, not breaking news on.
- carolynn kutz
Totally agree with Jeff Smith, but to be fair, the web celebs got right back to where they were here on Friendfeed, so there's no use crying about it, is there;-)?
- Brandon Mendelson
Gilbert: in Twitter search you see everyone, including spammers, bad actors, and celebrities and you can't remove any of the above. To me Twitter search is more important now than the people I'm following.
- Robert Scoble
Agree with Robert. As I followed more people and got used to "noise", I find Twitter search very interesting because I can "shape" the streams I'm looking for.
- phil baumann
Thats 24,000 followers for every update she's posted. I think i have the inverse ratio!
- Jamie Vidamour
Robert Scoble: I totally agree with you on that. But the whole follower race got a lot less talk once the tv/film celebs showed up. I remember on TWIT it was always a point of conversation, who was where in the rankings. But once Twitter blew up on the celeb front that talk quickly died. I think it was you who said it best though, it's quality not quantity. I'd never be able to have this debate with Oprah, but you're still part of the community. Even with 80K + followers.
- Jeff Smith
Yes and I agree with Jeff Smith, not to mention Oprah would have to quit her day job if she were to actually weed through those one million in search of the non-spamming, non-auto DMing, actual daily users of twitter. Quality is definitely harder to find than quantity in followers.
- Shelly Gullen
No it's not a big deal for someone with the media power of Oprah, but it would be a huge deal if you were one of the 11 she's following!
- Fred von Graf
For celebs this just another tool to get "their" message out. Could have been an email list as well. Twitter and the social applications are meant for two-way, community conversations (at least some of the time). Twitters that are just pushing out links to press releases or blog postins are using the tool for their own prurpose, not the community. Follow if you wish. Right now there is not much of a conversation.
- Elwin Witzke
Is anyone surprised about Oprah having 1 million Twitter followers? I am not in the least. What would you expect?
- Lester Greenberg
It's in keeping with the short attention span that Twitter fosters; yesterday's news, moving on.
- Paul Chaney
I wish there was a dislike button because I would click it.
- Gabe Diaz
She doesn't really post anything useful in her updates and she doesn't update that often. Maybe that's why?
- Kimberly Cooley
Is a million really that many? show me a trillion followers and I'll be impressed.
- j1m
Robert :" in Twitter search you see everyone, including spammers, bad actors, and celebrities and you can't remove any of the above." True. You can't help but see everything in a Google web search either. But you don't have to go to and read all the results. You the user are selective. Sometimes that's easy, and sometimes it isn't. These discussions about Twitter and it's users, celebrities or otherwise, are bordering on the "we're better than you are" territory. Are we? Really?
- Gilbert Harding
Gilbert: wrong. In Google I have a choice to click the next page. In Twitter? I can't separate out the good stuff from the bad stuff on http://search.twitter.com -- in real time search you've got to have metadata to be able to filter. Twitter doesn't have it. Friendfeed does.
- Robert Scoble
Good for Friendfeed Robert, but the metadata is in your head. Sometimes you just have to use it.
- Gilbert Harding
Gilbert: very funny, but it's very easy to demonstrate how crappy Twitter's search is and how full of spam it is. You'll get there someday when you're trying to find a tweet you know exists and you can't get back to it. Then you'll remember what I told you about metadata and you'll come here and find that tweet.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Just making a point. Sometimes with all this technology at our disposal we forget to use our brains. Twitter search may be rubbish, I haven't had occasion to use it much, and I reckon it's a fair bet a large percentage of user haven't either. It's a transient medium, you're there, then you're somewhere else. I don't think it was ever meant to be anything else. How long do they keep tweets in the database? Do you know that? How long do Friendfeed keep data?
- Gilbert Harding
Gilbert: I know you haven't used it much. If you had you wouldn't be so obstinate. Friendfeed keeps its data forever. Twitter search hasn't, though. I guarantee you can't find this tweet about the Chinese Earthquake from a year ago on Twitter search. It shows right up in friendfeed, though. http://friendfeed.com/scoblei...
- Robert Scoble
Gilbert: even better, try doing this search on Twitter. Not possible. http://friendfeed.com/search... Notice how this item shows up in the search, too. Noise exists even on friendfeed but compare to Twitter and you'll see a lot less noise here.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Thanks for that, I'm getting some good pointers to using FF efficiently. Search is one of those areas I don't go into much and I am gradually building a database of personal FAQ's. Item: Use Friendfeed to search Twitter. Cool.
- Gilbert Harding

Item 1: Windows 7 is still shipping in 2009 Here's what's happening RTM in mid-August (Microsoft has confirmed) General availability "in time for the holiday season" (according to Microsoft) General availability is mid-October according to a source First post-RC build has been given to Microsoft's partners We're still steam-rolling to the finish line Related: Windows 7 Secrets update The deadline is Monday for the first pass
- Leo Laporte
Nice thing is that you don't need a new laptop, Windows 7 can be installed on just about everything with reasonable specs.
- Matthew
Leo! So glad to have found you! When I first met my dear hubby, I was shocked that there was a whole channel dedicated to tech stuff (TechTV). I was more shocked to find that I loved watching with him! You and Patrick Norton made tech stuff so entertaining and educational without talking down, I loved watching and missed you guys when you went off. But here you are! Great to see you.
- Erin Weber
Windows 7 is holding up quite well on the four computers I have. One old Gateway that had Windows 98 installed, then a laptop with that had Vista Basic and 2 MB Pros (one Duo & one Duo 2). So far just great. Only problem trying to connect to wireless printer.
- John Durham
all this talk of getting it right ... it's all under the hood - they need to get the overall win 7 UI nailed and consistent across the board
- Allistair Crossley
Windows 7 works great under virtualbox on the mac and on bare metal it certainly feels much faster than vista even on a pentium dual core
- Patrick Dunn
on another topic. I went to an overview of Hyper-V yesterday. It looks like a solid product, but I'm wondering, does MS support clustering using a NAS or does it require the use of a SAN?

Item 3: Battle of the advertisements 1) Microsoft posts new Apple Tax ad But this time its about Zune vs. iPod Filling a 120 GB iPod at iTunes store would cost $30,000 Zune Pass is $15 a month, and you get 10 free songs per month You'd have to use Zune Pass for over 166 years to spend $30,000 and let's face it, our musical tastes change over time. Do we really need to own Christopher...

Item 4:EU fines Intel $1.45 billion for abusing monopoly power Truth is, they're probably guilty but let's be serious: AMD's processors are a joke now
- Leo Laporte
I don't know if they're "a joke". At their price point and with their overclocking abilities they make a fantastic enthusiast processor. The thing is, the reason AMD's processors aren't so good is probably because they don't have as much money as Intel, specifically because of Intel's monopolistic practices. When Intel's monopolistic practices started, AMD's processors were not a joke...

I read a lot of travel writing and am a big Rick Steves fan: He pushes the notion of traveling like a temporary local, which my wife and I sort of came to on our own coincidentally. In case you weren't aware, Twitter is a social micro-blogging service introduced in 2006 and has over five million active users. The IBM PCjr is a personal computer introduced in 1984 and has a 4.77MHz processor, 128KB of RAM, and uses 360KB floppy disks for storage. It seemed like a good idea at the time."

Right. And how one learns is also a huge factor. I learn best by doing things, while another learns best by reading, and another can only learn by hearing something

That "definitely" has generational factors, Chuck. If I learn how to do something now, I'm going to be doing it 50 years from now. cwob is the coolest name for a web site. I used hamachi in the past and had to make a Logmein ID. I think thats where I got mixed up, Chuck
- Scott Johnson
Hamachi is still kind of flaky to me on OS X
- Chuck Adams
I used it on my windows machine. Not too keen on trying it for Mac
- Scott Johnson
It works most of the time, but the open source gui, HamachiX still has some issues IMHO
- Chuck Adams
Kevin, don't act all naive... you have seen her try. she is part zombie, part vampire, part kitten... oh wait... i think part zombie, part vampire is all kitten. Anyway, she is awesome!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Which side does she take in plants vs. zombies?
- Stephen Mack
Black kitten with green eyes...sigh. If she wouldn't suck the blood out of my bunny I'd adopt her in a second! Vampire kittens rule.
- Jess
well she hasn't been introduced to many plants yet, but she has attacked a couple of the little zombies I got for my bday. I don't know... we have her young so I think we can teach her to be on either side.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Jess, I'm hoping she will keep her green eyes, she is only just 8 weeks, so they could still change, but she is a sweetheart!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Just for fun, let's imagine what it would be like if they did a new Star Trek movie for The Next Generation. Who would they cast in the roles? I know the original actors are still young compared to TOS, but this is just for kicks!
Robert Scoble as Neelix. Oh nevermind, that's Voyager.
- Rodfather
I stayed with the historical racial casting thus my picks are: Ben Kingsley as Pickard, Pierce Bronson as Riker,Lawrence Fishburne as Worf,William Hurt as Data, Cuba Gooding Jr as Geordi (on the edge with this one),Rene Russo as Dr Crusher, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Troi (Look them up, you will agree.)
- Travis
Ben Kingsly as Picard??? He actually might be older than Patrick Stewart, and he's short. I like William Hurt, he's a great actor, but I'd say he's a bit old for Data as well. And I don't know what you mean by historical racial casting.

Chris Rock for Laforge...................

According to a well-connected Silicon Valley source who spoke with Gawker, and who may have been recruited by Apple for a senior position, Apple and Twitter's management are engaged in serious negotiations. In fact they may be close to sealing a deal for as much as $700 million, with the intention of announcing the purchase at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference in June.
- Leo Laporte
Might be a clever move if they then don't shut out non Apple users in the end.
- Donald Townsend
so apple isn't capitalism 2.0-we still hope for constructive capitalism- may the good are evil too?
- Boris (aka electrouncle)
So now, Apple will get to "approve" each and every tweet before it is sent! :-)
- Rob Smith
Maybe I am just imagining this. But I could have sworn I heard or read somewhere that Twitter was valued much higher. If so Apple is getting a steal.
- Nick O
So, if Twitter has gotten as big as it is by having its famously open API, and Apple is notorious for walling their gardens. How exactly will Apple incorporate Twitter effectively?
- Sunny Molini
Never going to happen; it's ridiculous to discuss.
- Peter
It would be an amazing way for apple to build a community. A community already pre-populated with their users.
- Matthew Snape
$700 million seems way too low. And what could Apple bring that Twitter doesn't already have? Seriously.

"Yvoire is a small village on the French coast of Lake Leman. It’s set exactly in front of my town, which is on the Swiss coast of the lake. Practically Yvoire is what I see every morning from my windows, if the weather is clear enough. It takes about 20 minutes by boat to cross the lake from Nyon (Switzerland) to Yvoire (France)."

Lake Leman is what many non-Swiss call "Lake Geneva." The castle pictured is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.... lovely pictures! EDIT: fun fact: this area inspired the writing of the novel, "Frankenstein" :-D

How do you install Windows 7 on a netbook with no dvd drive?
- Willowdale
I am using 64 bit on this machine and 32 bit on my old P4 machine and laptop, the only problem i have had with the 64 bit is that my printer drivers wont work with it, so i switched the printer to an older printer and it works fine
- Brian Kirby
windows 95 was the last version of windows that I has excited about buying. Every other version was just forced on me when i bought or built a new PC.

Paul should use a more appropriate scale, say 1.0 to 7.9?

iTunes does, I'm sure Wow will work as long as you have the right video card drivers installed. sevenforums.com is a great place to check that stuff.

"A Texas startup has finally pulled the wraps off its 40-mpg, 450-horsepower Scorpion roadster, a hand-built hydrogen-burning "eco-exotic" that is sexier than Angelina Jolie and has the performance to provide more grins than nitrous oxide. Ronn Motor Company unveiled the Scorpion today at the big SEMA, or Speciality Equipment Market Association, automotive trade show in Las Vegas, which may be the perfect place to debut so flashy — and innovative — a car. The company hopes the Scorpion does for hydrogen what the Tesla Roadster has done for batteries. "We want to build cool cars, just more responsibly”, company president Ronn Maxwell told Wired.com. "Our hope with the Scorpion is to implement a paradigm shift not only in how the industry looks at supercars but at cars in general.""

why not tiffany? Electric cars solve the contamination problem, but only from cars. The electricity has to come from somewhere else.
