I'm amazed at how fluid and human-like its motion is: even when it fails, it acts like a real juggler scrambling for the ball. I'd play catch or badminton with a robot like that.

I like Anne Hathaway. I find her charming and interesting in darker roles (and she will fill out the catwoman suit in amazing ways) and, I imagine, they will take advantage of Bruce's lack of a love interest this time around. Tom Hardy will be great. I'm so looking forward to the twist of someone hunting the Batman/Bruce Wayne being afraid.
- Jason Toney
Didn't Batman Begins have two villains? Ras al-Ghul and the Scarecrow. The Dark Knight? The Joker and Two-Face. I for one am disappointed in the choice of Bane for second villain, especially now that Two-Face has had his origin. But that's Nolan's choice, not us fans'...

Awesome job! About 5 years ago I lost around 90 lbs in 2 months or so...and not in the best way. Since then I have gained it back and am looking to lose it again for good. Any tips you have are greatly appreciated!
- Chris Topher
Chris: in my experience, the key to weight loss is caloric intake: everything else is tangential or helps with other aspects of health. So, math has been my main tool: I calculate my basal metabolic rate and my calorie allotment daily (keeping in mind 3,500 calories is roughly equal to one pound), and try to maximize the amount of food I can eat for my calorie allotment. A few comments...

Great job Mark! I'm interested in following your journey. I've lost 60 lbs in the last year by concentrating on whole natural foods. Similar to your diet, I've gotten rid of sugar, refined grains and most processed food. I've found (personally and from research) that eating "real" is a key factor to health. Food created by nature and not created/modified by people in a laboratory.
- Vaughn
With your calories so low, you don't experience any hunger during the day?
- Vaughn
Vaughn, I think Mark eats a lot of "mass" but not high energy, so remains sated when he eats despite the low caloric intake.
- Mo Kargas
Right: I'm constantly eating (every 3 hours) and each meal fills me up.

It's smaller than the iPhone 3G I'm used to, but amazingly, it doesn't fit into any existing dock (not even the iPad dock). Amazing what a tapered back does for fits.
- Mark Trapp
Activation was a breeze: no problems, took about 2 minutes. Oddly, it won't sync immediately after activation. You have to disconnect it and reconnect it. That's pretty kludgy.
- Mark Trapp
The feel of the "stainless" steel is awful. It's got this scratchy feeling, the same feel you get from holding a MacBook Pro. Would've wished they used the polished chrome, which has an oily feel, on the previous iPhones
- Mark Trapp
The retina display is like buying an HD TV. Looking at my old iPhone 3G, it looks blurry and hard to read. I'd imagine the same divide will occur: some people swear that HD TV is the only way to watch TV, others (like my parents) don't see the difference.
- Mark Trapp
Waiting for it to restore from my old iPhone's backup. Holding it, it feels solid in the hand. Because of the curves of the iPhone 3G, it moved around if I was doing heavy thumb tapping. The iPhone 4 ain't going anywhere.
- Mark Trapp
Man, the steel siding is really bugging me. In addition to the feel, it's not treated with anything; it's already staining. And the physical controls like the volume and silence switch are way too resistant. You really have to push down to get them to click.
- Mark Trapp
Still restoring, so let me harp on the siding some more. They talked about how the Palm Pre had really sharp edges; between having to press unreasonably hard to trigger it and its sharp edge, I'm pretty sure kids of the future will use iPhone 4s to cut their thumbs open to play blood brothers.
- Mark Trapp
Hm. Maybe the steel captures a hand imprint for biometric auth.
- Micah
Micah: I can clearly see my thumbprints all over the siding. Totally going to be the focal point of a CSI episode next season.
- Mark Trapp
Don't mean to threadjack, but [mini-rant] I just got an iPod Touch and was (negatively) amazed how sharp and uncomfortable the edges feel compared to my 2G iPhone.
- Micah
Micah: Compared to the iPhone, the iPod touches are way too thin for my taste; it feels like holding a microscope slide
- Mark Trapp
Still restoring (estimated time of completion: the Eschaton). The back of the iPhone is getting a little warm: no doubt due to the less space in the device and glass's thermal conductivity.
- Mark Trapp
Finally done restoring. The UX feels much more responsive than my iPhone 3G (as it should be, it's a new phone with an OS tailored specifically for it): feels like the iPhone 3G felt when I first got it and a little bit faster than my iPad. I'm going to go out and take some pictures with it and make a few calls, but besides that, if you know iOS4, it's pretty much the same thing after this point.
- Mark Trapp
Oh man, I pulled up some text to read, and oh man, the retina display makes a world of difference. It's like reading it in print.
- Mark Trapp
Man, Drop7, only the greatest game ever made in the history of mankind, crashes when you start a game. That's it, I'm bringing it back.
- Mark Trapp
Apparently, the game isn't compatible with iOS4 but the creators submitted an update.
- Arlan K.
Arlan: sweet. Speaking of games, I guess iOS 4 "fixed the glitch" where a game was allowed to override your playing music. Bitchin'.
- Mark Trapp
Interesting: FaceTime is off by default (likely so they can hit you with a disclaimer that tells you your phone number will be shared with people you use FaceTime with). You have to go into Settings -> Phone -> FaceTime to enable it.
- Mark Trapp
The TomTom car kit doesn't work with the iPhone 4, despite what random people on forums are assuming. Never registers the dock. Lame.
- Mark Trapp
The incompatible third party hardware trend continues. Prepare to buy all new stuff.
- Eric
Eric: I'm not sure at this point if it's a problem with the iPhone 4 or iOS4; the phone certainly fits within the dock and registers other third party devices. The TomTom car kit requires a separate app; hopefully a simple software update will fix the problem.
- Mark Trapp
Every app I've used so far (Twitter, Flickr, YouTube) takes it upon themselves to resize all media to lame, 2004-era sizes. What's the point of having an HD and 5 MP camera if nothing supports them?
- Mark Trapp
I stand corrected. The iPhone itself downsizes photos to 1024x768, even though it's ostensibly a 5 MP camera. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME. Edit: or not. Why is Flickr resizing the images when I upload through the desktop?
- Mark Trapp
Nice. The rolling shutter effect is not as bad with this.
- Rodfather
Do the photos stay full size if you email it?
- Rodfather
Rodfather: when you click send on an email with a photo, it tells you that you're a jerk who's about to send a large attachment, and gives you 4 sizing options: small, medium, large, and original size. Testing to see if it honors the last option. Edit: yes, it does.
- Mark Trapp
iOS 4 update includes the four photo sizing options prior to sending via email -- cool if your friends are still on AOL or something LOL
- Susan Beebe
There's been complaints about reception problems when holding the phone and yellow banding on the screen. Have you encountered either of those issues?
- Arlan K.
Haven't noticed any yellow banding. Reception is noticeably better: the voice quality is much better than the iPhone 3G, and I have fewer dropped calls (I was up to a dropped call every 30 minutes with my iPhone 3G). The Engadget review noted that while the display might show less bars, bars mean very little (I routinely had dropped calls with 5 bars, for example): I wonder if that's...

- Mark Trapp
The other thing I've noticed is that the phone gets really warm with even moderate use. Not like cook an egg hot, but like fever hot.
- Mark Trapp
Battery Stats: 2 hours, 34 minutes of usage; 4 hours, 28 minutes of standby; 70% battery left.
- Mark Trapp
Arlan: I just read the article on Gizmodo about the reception issues (URL: http://gizmodo.com/5571171...). That's pretty wild, and can confirm the exact same behavior: on the desk, it's got 5 bars, in my hand, it slowly goes down to 2. It doesn't seem to affect the actual signal, and I wonder if it's just some optimization going on.
- Mark Trapp
Weird. But as long as calls don't actually drop I wouldn't see it as a problem. Day is over! Just gotta sleep and get mine tomorrow.
- Arlan K.
from iPhone
According to Walt Mossberg (URL: http://ptech.allthingsd.com/2010062...), "Apple says that this is a bug it plans to fix, and that it has to do with the way the bars are presented, not the actual ability to make a call. And, in fact, in nearly all of these cases, the iPhone 4 was able to place calls despite the lack of bars."
- Mark Trapp
Is it too late to say TWSS regarding the tapered back comment?
- Geoff Schultz {TF}
iMovie for iPhoto came out; it's really, really basic. Only a handful of themes, very little in the way of transitions, and nothing like fades or swipes. It's good enough if you want to polish a turd (i.e. http://friendfeed.com/itafrom...), but that's about it.
- Mark Trapp
Well, it only took the Internets one day to figure out and solve Tom Tom's iPhone car kit problem. It turns out, due to a design flaw in the kit itself, the dock connector will not be at the proper angle to make a connection without putting in a device that's exactly the same thickness as the iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS. The solution is to stick something behind the base of the iPhone 4 when snapping it into the car kit: 9 business cards of standard thickness did it for me.
- Mark Trapp
iPhone 4 fits into a 1st gen iPhone dock! Glad I checked before I chunked it.
- Ginger Makela Riker
Nice, Ginger. I haven't found many accessories that fit: a lot of them seem to rely on the tapered edge of the iPhone 3G series.
- Mark Trapp
So today was pretty bad with dropped calls. 20 minute phone call, 2 dropped calls and somehow I accidentally hit mute (probably an issue with the proximity sensor). Hard to say at this point whether it's AT&T or the hand-on-the-side problem.
- Mark Trapp
Hutch, yeah: Arlan mentioned it yesterday. I can confirm the behavior, but Apple says it's just a display glitch, and I'm not convinced from my own usage it actually affects call signal. It turns out my dropped calls were due to a weak 3G signal and the iPhone 4's ridiculous attempts to hold onto weak signals (somewhere above I mentioned it holding onto my apartment's WiFi signal even when I was a block away).
- Mark Trapp
After a couple of days of use, I'm convinced Apple hates people who use the phone feature on the iPhone. The proximity sensor, which causes the touch display to lock when it's next to your face, is way too sensitive. Several times I've triggered the mute button, the add contact button, and opened apps via the springboard just by holding the phone to my face because the sensor thought I...

I've had plenty of paid gigs that came through free work I'd done, but also found many people who value my work as long as it's free. She was like the new prom queen—the one who millions of brainy, brunette girls who’d long since disavowed their interest in prom queens had secretly been waiting for. (Some guys, too.) It was Heathers (1988), a groundbreaking, unsentimental (and very smart and funny) film about a pair of high school outcasts (Ryder and Christian Slater) who wind up taking out a handful of the most popular kids at school, that first earned Ryder favored-actress status amongst those of the Generation Formerly Known as X."
