"In 2007, frustrated by the slow pace of rebuilding in the Lower Ninth, Brad Pitt set up a foundation called Make It Right; the foundation then commissioned 13 architecture firms to design affordable, green houses. The organization plans to build 150 homes, all for returning Lower Ninth residents. So far, just 15 of them are occupied, but those 15 make a big impression. Indeed, from the main route into the Lower Ninth, the Claiborne Avenue Bridge, it’s impossible to miss the Brad Pitt Houses, as everyone here calls them. They are sprawling, angular buildings in bold hues not usually seen outside a gelateria. Monuments to the city’s resilience, and to Hollywood’s big heart, they are also New Orleans’s newest tourist attraction."

"Coco Chanel invented a fashion vocabulary — camellias, the black dress, the double-C logo, the elongated octagon shape of the Chanel No. 5 perfume stopper — and she surrounded herself with these inspirations in her posh Paris apartment. Located at 31 Rue Cambon, the apartment sits atop the Chanel boutique and couture salon, where models showed collections to prospective buyers. Today, the apartment is used for press interviews and fashion shoots — and, of course, for haute couture clients, says Odile Babin, a Chanel archivist."

To enter Chanel's universe, you climb a curved staircase, up steps carpeted in beige, with white trim. When new collections were presented, Chanel watched them being modeled from these stairs. During the show, she would sit perched on the fifth step down from her apartment, in front of a wall of mirrors. Looking down, she could see the models and the audience reaction to the clothes — without anyone seeing her.
- Derrick
Chanel's apartment is filled with visible perfections — crystal chandeliers, gleaming mirrors, pairs of gilded Chinese horses, an ancient Russian icon from her friend Igor Stravinsky, a golden hand her friend Alberto Giacometti sculpted for her, and a shaft of wheat painted by her friend Salvador Dali. It's all very opulent, sophisticated and elegant, and yet the apartment isn't a large...

Happy Holidays FF crue -- you've made this an excellent and memorable year for many of us. Facebook couldn't have done it without you! :)

w00t you gave me the best online year in 15 years!!! ;p Thanks a lot, everyone, for what you've done here XD

Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.

"Ironically, China, despite its dirty coal plants, is the world's leader in terms of fashioning policy to combat environmental degradation, thanks to its one-child-only edict. The intelligence behind this is the following: -If only one child per female was born as of now, the world's population would drop from its current 6.5 billion to 5.5 billion by 2050, according to a study done for scientific academy Vienna Institute of Demography. -By 2075, there would be 3.43 billion humans on the planet. This would have immediate positive effects on the world's forests, other species, the oceans, atmospheric quality and living standards. -Doing nothing, by contrast, will result in an unsustainable population of nine billion by 2050."

Not just the birth rate, but improved health care is to blame too. If we had found fewer treatments and cures, more people would die, and there'd be less carbon output. And health care would be cheaper too, if expensive treatments didn't exist, and that'd bring down health insurance costs. :-/

I should buy my wife one of these and scrap both of her current ones, one of which weighs 9,000 lb.
- ha3rvey (business time)
ha3rvey, if she's got a '60s or earlier machine, I'd recommend keeping the 9,000 lb machine. They're probably all-metal machines that last longer and are tougher than these plastic things.
- Spidra Webster
I don't have that machine, but I have one with an automatic buttonholer and must say, that's a very handy feature to have. Previously, I used my mother's ridiculously heavy all-metal contraption which I am keeping around because some day I feel that I will know how to fix it.
- Miss Elle
I am not supposed to buy things for myself in the month of December but I fear I will have to make an exception for this. :( I need to a) buy myself a decent sewing machine b) learn how to use it and c) make about 10 multicolored santa hats by Friday. I've already deconstructed a storebought santa hat to make what I think is supposed to be a pattern but since I've never actually seen a pattern in my life, who knows. :D
- EricaJoy
Heh, thanks. The hats themselves aren't that hard to make (http://friendfeed-media.com/945426b...), I just don't have the proper tool. My little handistitch thing isn't cutting it. I am going to go hit up the Sears outlet (yay great mall right down the street) and see if they have anything.

"The Volkswagen Microbus is a classic - even to those of us born after its time. Arguably unlike the newly remade Beetle, this remake of a VW classic is remarkably true to the original on the outside - but on the inside it is a bio-diesel hybrid stuffed full of high tech gadgetry and eco-friendly innovations."

Super cool VW Bus making a comeback...
- Walt Ruppar
First of all, I'll cop to wanting one of these. That being said, Jason is right. This is for rich hippies (who probably aren't hippies at all). The VW microbus became the darling of the Flower Power crowd because it was cheap, easy to repair, and big. You could camp in it. Is there a car today that fits this bill?
- Chris Baskind
wow, you can buy an awful lot of pot with $129,000.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't know a self-respecting hippie that would prefer this over a really nice indoor greenhouse. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
@Chris, Most cars today aren't as simple, but with the wealth of knowledge online, it just takes more time. The minivan/SUV can become a camper van with a few mods. They'll never take the place of the VW, but they're an updated version of the 70s panelvan conversions (hopefully without shag carpeting & a disco-ball).
- Steven Cains
Nope: there will never be anything that simple again. That's not all bad: I can't imagine a 1960s VW Minibus would satisfy *any* federal safety standard these days. You're right. A used minivan might be the closest thing.
- Chris Baskind
Very Cool. You can't drive your house but, you can sleep in your Van !!!
- Eric Logan
Very intriguing. How much steel is in that thing? Chris, that would be my next question after fuel consumption: how safe is this thing? And I agree, when we can go back to making transportation that costs less than a small home, we may have achieved something amazing. ;)
- Melanie Reed
However, I have heard (and I'm not remembering where at the moment) that there has been a movement growing of people seeking alternative housing and substituting things like this as the new "mobile" home.

So after reading this article yesterday, I found myself this evening in front of a local place that specializes in reconditioning old VWs. It was closed, but there's an awesome red and white microbus out front with a For Sale sign on it. Ugly, underpowered -- and probably dangerous, by modern standards. Want. ;-)

"For the most part, what we "know" about introversion is still more theory than fact. We talk about introverts losing energy in social interactions but what, exactly, is that energy? What is energy directed outward? Or inward? We know what we think we mean when we talk about such things, but how do you measure them in a way that scientists can get a grip on? Nobody has figured that out yet. With that in mind, I learned of another interesting theory developed by Jennifer Grimes, a graduate student of cognitive sciences at University of Central Florida who started looking at introversion while she was an undergraduate at Wellesley College, studying under Jonathan Cheek. Grimes wants to help pin down the energy model of introversion/extroversion proposed by Carl Jung (who also gave us the words introversion and extroversion)."

That is awesome! I love Indiana - and not just b/c she resembles another little gray cat we know.

Spidra, me too! She is yawning but she almost looks like she is yelling or something odd. Suezanne, she is real, she is a very odd little cat, but very real. Katy, totally! I would say that Plum and Indiana should meet someday but Indy has a bit of a stick up her but about other cats (it even takes her some time to adjust to the kittens). They are both such cool cats though!!

Thanks Heather. Wait, all of Virginia thinks I'm adorable? I mean I know they did when I was 2 yo and lived there, but now? Goodness, that is a lot of people for Kevin to fight off. Well, all of Indiana will have to stare them down! ;)
- Rachel Lea Fox
Well, I am sure Indiana finds that it isn't as exciting as pillaging tombs, raiding lost artifacts or fighting Nazi's
- RAPatton
RAPatton, actually I think this is her "I haven't had an adventure in a long time, can't someone lose an important artifact to the Nazi's please" look. I'm sure I'll find her hunting Nazi's in the rafters in just a few days. ;)

"For three seasons, Sterling Cooper has sold Lucky Strikes, Hilton hotels, and Belle Jolie lipstick. And for three seasons, AMC has sold us Mad Men, in an effort to re-brand itself as something greater than the home of not-so-old movies. Sometimes the sell has been too ham-fisted, and sometimes we've resisted. But after the fireworks of that spectacularly satisfying finale, we can no longer deny that we're watching one of the most bold and unpredictable shows to ever air on television — and that AMC has given Matt Weiner full creative license to go for it. AMC's new marketing is all about "original" content — and you will not find more original TV than a show that can accommodate Betty's Demerol-addled delivery (the most brilliant childbirth we've ever seen on TV), the lawnmower bloodbath (the boldest mid-season correction we've ever seen), Betty and Don's confrontation (simply the tautest piece of television we've seen in years), and a season finale as original, striking, and madcap-crazy as this one. We're sold. Signed, sealed, delivered, Matt Weiner, we're yours. (At least until next season.)"

"One thing to remember about the fall of Rome metaphor that has dogged this season: When the Roman empire collapsed, its people didn’t just cease to exist. A new order rose up. The Mad Men season 3 finale was satisfying on so many levels. I thought the Season 2 finale arc was mesmerizing, but this was better; simply amazing to watch. The writers have really figured out what makes these characters pop and they delivered that secret sauce by the bucketful. Season 4 is going to be a delicious cocktail of Mad Men concentrate. I can't wait.
