Pownce isn’t the only site offering to share snippets of text with friends. Miniblogging sites let you write extremely short entries via the web and cellphones, and some let you share media too. We tested 9 of them: Jaiku, Twitter, Tumblr, Moodmill, Pownce, Hictu, Facebook’s status updates and the spin-offs from Bebo and Xanga. - giovanni gallucci

Why try to out-Google Google? The technology press has widely covered the launch of yet another search engine, Cuil, this one claiming to be more comprehensive than Google. Forget the allure of this David vs. Goliath story, but is what these companies do relevant to marketers? One search engine that might be is Viewzi. Viewzi creates a highly visual experience that tailors the way you look at information based on what you are looking for. - giovanni gallucci

Viewzi.com This search site lightens the data overload by filtering and grouping results into several distinct interfaces. Looking up Zooey Deschanel's band? You'll get 16 possible paths for "She & Him," including MP3 view (with a list of streaming audio you can play), album view (cover art and related musicians), plus specialized lenses for images, news, and more. - giovanni gallucci

It feels almost redundant to say that I’ve written some best advice about social media. I write pretty much all the time about social media. So maybe this is just a collection of ten posts about it. I believe that social media (things like blogging, podcasting, video, collaboration, and social networks) delivers actual, tangible results to businesses and individuals, if done with a purpose. The trick of it all is working within a strategy. It’s easy to run off the rails and just use the tools without any kind of goal in mind. Hopefully, some of this will help. Besides, the best advice is the advice that works for you. Nothing to do with what I think at all. In any case, I’ve compiled ten posts about social media that I think might be useful to you. - giovanni gallucci

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira has a good post out today, When FriendFeed Creates a Mob. The post describes the activity on FriendFeed related to a Thomas Hawk post regarding the director of visitor relations at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In case you’ve missed it, here’s a quick summary: 1. Thomas Hawk was shooting pictures at the SFMOMA 2. The director of visitor relationships told him to leave 3. After pleading his case, Thomas was kicked out of the SFMOMA 4. Thomas blogged about it, asking people to Digg the story to get it maximum attention 5. Many people on FriendFeed dugg it, and currently the post has 3,780 diggs - giovanni gallucci

If you ever wanted to know how people are storing or sharing content on the web, this graph says this all. It shows a list of most popular social services that are used by netizens to share or save web pages. social-bookmarks Email continues to be the most favorite mode for sharing links on the Internet followed by Facebook and Digg though its a formidable lead. These statistics are provided by ShareThis and if you compare these numbers with what AddThis provided an year ago, you’ll see an interesting trend: 1. More people prefer sharing links on social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace rather than the regular social bookmarking services like delicious. 2. Windows Live is gaining ground and appears almost as popular as Google Bookmarks. The gap was very wide last year. 3. Don’t discount Technorati yet. It looks like lot of people do add blogs / websites to their "Technorati Favorites" and it’s more popular than say Diigo, ma.gnolia.com or Mixx.com. - giovanni gallucci

YouTube is a phenomenon, but it's not exactly guaranteed to be kid-friendly. Totlol takes care of that. Actual human beings vet videos from all over the Web as suitable for kids age 6 months to 6 years and embed them at this site. I found classics like Kermit singing "It's Not Easy Being Green" on Sesame Street on up to modern VeggieTales and Wiggles and lots of obscure stuff in between. And of course, cute personal videos abound, all kid safe, all in bite-size chunks great for those kid-size (and modern adult) attention spans. - giovanni gallucci

There's plenty of aggregated video sites, but Chime.TV pulls from the best (Break.com, Dailymotion, Veoh, and others) to make editor-created channels filled with stuff you'll love. The channels feature the latest episodes of shows like Will It Blend? and Chad Vader, as well as channels for news, cute stuff, extreme sports, technology, and about 20 more—including stuff from the network TV sites. It might seem a little odd when you could just visit the sites, but think of Chime.TV as the site that provides the constant background video comfort we use TVs for. - giovanni gallucci

Mux is an excellent video conversion/sharing site that lets you enter in the URL of a video clip (or its location on your hard drive) and specify what format you'd like to receive the video in (iPod, PSP, DivX, MPEG-4, and lots more). Give it a few minutes to work its magic, and Mux will send you an e-mail with the location from which you can download your newly formatted video. - giovanni gallucci

Drop.io is, put simply, the best file-sharing service we've seen. Just type in the URL you'd like to use, upload your files (up to 100MB), set a password and/or privacy setting, and choose how long the link should be live (up to a year from the last page view). Sharing the files is then as easy as sending the URL around. There's no registration, no cost, and no limit to how many URLs you can use. - giovanni gallucci

Chris, I'll be on a Social Media Metrics Panel @ http://www.interactiveaustin20... on Firday. I'll bring back the goods for you from that panel and from my experience. Does it matter? - Only if you want to get paid. - giovanni gallucci
Yeah, I would be interested to see how others measure their social media strategies, if at all. - Liz Burr
Better late than never, I guess. :) - Amanda Chapel
I think it's only really a "versus" issue when it's competitors. How would I compare the success of company X versus company Y when they have radically different goals? - Jeremy Toeman
Jeremy - exactly, I am having a hard time trying to figure out if it is even worthwhile - so what if Co. X is on twitter and flickr and not on facebook. I think it boils down to are they engaged and are they improving their reputation and improving their business as a result. These things are practically impossible to measure without inside access, and because it could be happening as a result of so many other things, how can you attribute it to a social media program. - Chris Heuer

I'm starting to have second thoughts about upgrading from my first-gen iPhone. - l0ckergn0me
no way. no video support. no cut/paste. don't fall for Uncle Steve's tricks! - Andy Sternberg via twhirl
I am hearing mixed things but I in. - Steve Rubel
I am not planning to rush out and get the 3G iPhone. I am happy with my first gen and looking forward to the 2.0 software. I will wait for the next update, maybe it will have 32GB. - Rajiv Doshi
i actually don't care about any of they OS and hardware updates. All I *really* care about is well the MobileMe integration is. If I can get wireless calendar sync, then I'm a happy camper. - George Lee
He comments home users will have to pay $10 more, but it's actually $15. Text messaging is no longer bundled, last I read, so you'll have to pay $5 more (on TOP of the $10 for 3G service) just to get the same 200 text messages you're getting now. So instead of an extra $240 over two years for the service, you're looking at an extra $360. Just so you can save $200 on the initial buy. I'm pretty sure I'm NOT "upgrading." - Kevin Hessel
Well, the device is surely worth it, if there weren't the rather expensive data plans. But i'll wait until later this year what apps will show up in the App Store. - derlinzer
Except for IM and cut&paste, the iPhone 3g is better in almost every way than my SK3, which is why I am going to switch to it. I just can't wait for android to finally materialize a phone. - J. Phil
I currently have an old Sprint "mini-brick" with no Internet access. I need a new phone, so the iPhone looks pretty good to me. - Hutch Carpenter
I'm in for the integrated GPS... the first app I'll be buying is TomTom's navigator. - Roger Benningfield
At first I was with Andy, no video no way. After watching the full keynote, I will upgrade for the MobileMe and the App store. I really think the apps are going to be marvelous and only get better with time. - Jennifer Van Grove via twhirl
KH - See how they get you! - Russellreno
I'm very disappointed with the new iPhone from what I've read about it so far. IMHO if you already have an iPhone then there are not enough improvements to warrant ditching it and purchasing an iPhone 1.5. If you don't have an iPhone already then it is worth looking into. For those who need a good camera on their phone - avoid the iPhone as it has a terrible camera - and there seems to be no improvement for iPhone 1.5. - Joe Breen
Joe - where the iphone camera is concerned.. you obviously haven't seen many pictures taken with a sidekick 3. they are seriously crappy. - J. Phil
Jennifer - I'm convinced that hold on video support is purely so MobileMe can establish it's own video-uploading community and then, i wouldn't be surprised if Apple goes as far as to ONLY allow video from iPhone to upload to the proprietary MobileMe depository. - Andy Sternberg
Or try the photo output from a Treo. You fancy-pants iPhone early adopters don't know how good you've got it! :D - Roger Benningfield
Sadly, I've decided that I can't justify it over my current setup. As much as I want to, the lack of 5MP or better camera is disappointing. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
J. Phil ... no haven't seen shots from a sidekick 3. They must be pretty bad if worse than iPhone 1.0. :/ I think the best news coming from WWDC last Monday was the MobileMe idea and applications. That is going to be pretty sweet. And I guess is Apple's way of bringing Enterprise onto using the iPhone so they (Enterprises) won't have to use iTunes on Windows to sync. - Joe Breen
Joe: http://www.poweredbydanger.com... and that's a *good* picture, in the daylight. Indoor shots invariably are so noisy you can't make anything out. - J. Phil
J. Phil: Yup, fairly poor quality. It's a shame with the iPhone ... Apple are so close to having an unbeatable device ... they just need to add about 10 things and nothing will come close to it. 1 other thing I would add to the list of 7 above is being able to lock whether the screen flips or not ... sometimes you don't want it to flip. :) - Joe Breen
Heck why not...better iPhone, half the price...what's not to like? Well I guess the lack of a real keyboard, AT&T, and... - John
I think 3G and the GPS make it a worthy upgrade. Plus I can give this old one to my wife. - Joe Mac Stevens
Absolutely! With the 1st iPhone, it was only for people with "money is no object" mentality. The new iPhone is now priced right and very affordable. The more reason we should all buy one. - 4dluvofmen
the iPhone's camera sucks less than about 95% of cell phones - Mike Cohen
There aren't very many compelling reasons to get me to upgrade right now. I think I'll hold out for 3.0. - Brandon Wood
Definitely not standing in line as I did for the first one. I could care less about GPS. 3 G, though is good. - Francine Hardaway
Definitely. The original allowed me to get rid of my iPod. Now I can get rid of my tomtom. :-) I am waiting for the iPhone-Toothbrush next year. - giovanni gallucci
