FriendFeed Jabber/Gtalk IM bot - http://blog.imified.com/index...
I think this is the origin of story!! March 26 was when I added the bot to my gTalk..!! - Jigar Mehta
I like having each service as an individual contact. Much easier. Can we see the same for Pownce? - Chris Nixon
Well, IMified has taken bot to a next level.. I even created a customized option to check my google calendar appointments for today (a quick schedule for today) by interacting with bot! Not sure, if they have one for Pownce.. - Jigar Mehta from bTT
One year later. Just bumping this because it's the one year anniversary of the only item on FriendFeed to get more than 400 likes. (452 at the moment) - Ken Sheppardson

I'm thinking about getting this lens to replace my Nikkors 18-55 and 55-200VR. Any thoughts on it? - Roshan Vyas from Bookmarklet
Why not Nikon's own 18-200 VR? - Benjamin Golub
I'm not sure if i want to spend so much on a lens. I just got my D40 this year and am pretty new to the dSLR world... If I buy the Sigma on eBay using the MS Live cashback program, I could get it for as low as $300. That is much more palatable than the $450 or so after cashback for the Nikon - Roshan Vyas
I have used both on a D40; the Nikon is superior & in my view worth the cash difference. - Mel Buckpitt
I suggest looking for a used Nikon 28-200mm G. You can probably get it for under $200 and it is a GREAT, often overlooked lens. A couple of reviews: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon... ; http://www.nikonians.org/nikon... - Ben Greenberg
Take up Mel.Buckpitt's advice, you'll end up kicking yourself for not saving up that little bit extra. - Andrew Trinh
Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll hold off on this lens - Roshan Vyas
Neither of those lenses will give you any (significant) improvement in speed, image quality etc over the lenses you have already... Just convenience... Perhaps it would be worth considering a nice prime lens first? - Janek Mann
@Janek I bought a prime a few months ago, a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, and I love it - Roshan Vyas
I got the Nikon 18-200 VR for my birthday, and I'm actually thinking of selling it. It just isn't as sharp as I'd like and it's dog slow in low light. - cecily

the MacBook pro is the worst laptop for battery life ever. I just left my office with a full charge less than half an hour ago. When I opened up the laptop 10 minutes later I'd alredy last 75% of my battery life. 10 minutes of use later and now it's dead. Why does Apple make such crappy products?
Unacceptable. - stretta from twhirl
That's not typical though. I get 4 hours out of my MBP battery. Maybe your battery is defective? - Andru Edwards
You have probably checked this, but I had terrible problems with runaway processes. Next time you are losing battery power fast, open Activity Monitor and sort by % CPU. - s t e v e
frequently my MacBook pro just burns through battery life when it's supposed to be sleeping. I HATE that. - Thomas Hawk
brightness problem? bad battery? there were some recalls on older MBPs - mjc
turning down the brightness helps save a TON of juice. - mjc
are you serious? My battery for my MBP is the best I've ever had. - Zee.
I just re-read.... losing 75% during sleep? yes, bad battery. - mjc
i agree. macs have bad battery duration - Cee Bee
best I can tell the display is totally off while the lid is closed. I just have no idea how it can burn 75% of my power with the lid closed. Sometimes it does better than this but frequently I close the lid only to find it drained shortly thereafter. Lately I've been really regreting moving from a PC to a Mac. - Thomas Hawk
Definitely something odd going on there if it's killing your battery life while sleeping. You should be able to close the lid, leave for a day or two and then come back to a non-dead machine. - ronin
wow, somethings wrong there... - Zee.
some older MBPs also have problems going to sleep, just like the average PC laptop used to. try to make sure you see the heartbeat on the light - mjc
still, thomas, sounds like a bad battery. - mjc
The more pertinent question, Thomas, is why do people keep buying them? - eggsy
My original MacBook Pro battery used to last upwards of 3 hours but started to go bad little over a year after I bought it. I took it to the Apple store and they replaced it on the spot. I have AppeCare. New one again gives upwards of 3 hours. - Sam Grover
the thing is that it only does the massive fast battery drain while closed some of the time. This leads me to believe that it's not a direct battery issue. There are many things I've discovered about the mac though in the past two years that I hate though. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas - do you check to make sure the light is beating like a heart before you put it in your bag? - mjc
When new, my MBP would get 4 hours; after a year of regular use, it's down to about 2 hours. - Mistletoe Glen
MBP batteries die quickly if you cycle them a lot. Download Coconut and see if your battery is still at it's original capacity. Apple replaces up to 300 cycles, I think, if it's not - Cyndy
for instance why can't I hold shift down in thumbnail view and have it select every file between when I click on a later thumbail. Instead you have to cmd click every single file, time consuming and lame. - Thomas Hawk
It's pretty clear that there's something wrong with your MacBook Pro or with the battery. It's probably a sleep issue. Clearly not all MacBook Pros drain their battery like this, so it's a little sensationalist to conclude that they're the worst laptop for battery life ever. - Kevin Fox
or why even after I tell my mac to use photoshop as the default to open jpg filed does it still always insist on opening them in apple's own crappy preview program? - Thomas Hawk
I have the same issue with mine except it lasts only 5 minutes not plugged in. I have thought about taking it to the Apple store but figured they would make me buy a new battery so had resolved to just live with the cord. Mainly because I am not traveling much anymore. - Fa La La La Lindsay
given my experience over the past two years with my MacBook pro, my next computer purchase definitely will not be a mac. - Thomas Hawk
stunned . but fair enough. - Zee.
I have Apple Care and I'm already on my fourth MBP battery (in two years). - Carlos Granier-Phelps
My dell can run on for 6 hours tops on its most draconian power saver plan. Vista Power Management + 9 cell battery = FTW - Roberto Bonini
i guess i've got lucky with my MBP - i was just saying recently how happy i am about the battery...but frankly even if it only lasten 10 minutes, i'd take it any day over a day of battery on windows. - Zee.
I don't know Kevin, even when my MacBook pro was brand new the battery life still seriously underperformed vs any laptop I've ever had experience with. - Thomas Hawk
then seriously get it checked out Thomas because i had loads of laptops before my MBP and every single one was worse that the mbp i have now - Zee.
Thomas: Fair enough. I personally think it's strange that they included two different graphics chips into the latest MBP. Requiring users to sign nout and back in to switch chips guarantees that most users will only ever use one chip and the other is just dead weight in the machine (until someone comes out with a hack that will let you use it to crack WAP passwords). - Kevin Fox
is the battery 2 years old? swap it out - Bastard Operator From FF
Believe it or not, I've had worse battery life than that on some older desktop-replacement style laptops (though not much worse). It's the age-old trade off of performance vs battery life. For what it's worth, the Macbook (the now older white one) has pretty decent battery life. Not exceptional, but decent. It also has a LOT to do with what you're running. Games (and virtual machines) use a lot of battery life. - Cyrus Lendvay
This is nothing like my experience with MacBook Pro battery life, and apparently many that read the story agree. Maybe you have a crappy battery and ought to replace it, or your powersaving settings are incorrect. But it seems you just wanted to air some gripes anyway. If you dislike it so much, why not get rid of it intead of whining and making up sensationalist posts? - Dread Pirate PJ
I'm wondering if it also may have something to do with Lightroom. It seems to happen the most when I'm running lightroom right before I shut down. - Thomas Hawk
You may want to take a quick glance at this: http://www.anandtech.com/mac.... I'd say there's definitely something wrong with your battery or something is causing it to not go to sleep properly. - ronin

FriendFeed, A Better Way to View Your Flickr Contact's Photos and Faves - http://thomashawk.com/2008...
You know the only thing I find annoying? Flickr has that damn censorship feature and consequently Friendfeed won't display any photos that are marked "unsafe". You still have to go to the contacts page for those. - Eric P
personally I'd like to see more and more Flickr users on FF -- seeing photos here is one of my favorite things to do. This is one of the reason's why I heavily evangelize FF on my blog and at Flickr. The vast majority of my Flickr contacts though still are not on FF and I'd be interested in ways to see more of them come over. I also think FF needs a feature to let you move *all* of your Flickr contacts over, matching up their FF accounts where possible and creating imaginary friends where not. - Thomas Hawk
also friendfeed enables piclens which is currently my favorite way to view pictures. - Alan Le
FF is making me more active, and I really like that. If it weren't for FF, I'd be missing a lot of great photos and conversations. - donato from twhirl
Eric, that is true. Same with RSS. Flickr's censorship policy sucks. If I want to see naked people I should be allowed to see naked people. The fact that Flickr is a silo for any photos deemed by them as "unsafe" is wrong. Flickr should recognize that as adults we are capable of choosing what to see and what not to see. It bums me out that they filter out Merkley's photos here from my FF experience. I wish more people would complain about that fact. - Thomas Hawk
I love seeing which photos my Flickr friends have favorited. - lisa-k
Totally agree on your first comment, Thomas. We need some sort of "bulk Flickr feed import" to get everyone into FriendFeed, even if they don't actually have a FF account. I'm sure some computer guy out there could write a script for this. - Matt
One other thing I thought of: much like PicLens, it'd be really nice to be able to interact with photos (favorite/comment) directly from FF. For example, have a setting in FF to be able to "blow up" the shot and then fav/comment on it. - Matt
exactly. I use FF for the same. Its more fun here. - Thejesh GN
FF could show an RSS with images as photos, which is not happening, that way I could add an imaginary friend called "Flickr Contacts" and add my flickr contacts as a regular RSS - João Almeida
Thomas: If it is any consolation, you convinced me to join FF, and I must say, it's awesome. Shortly after I joined twitter too and haven't touched it much. - Justin Korn
I'm also enjoying viewing other people's favorite photos and sharing my own but I'm with Matt in thinking Flickr support in FF can be improved by letting us selectively view (at least) mid sized thumbnails. I never really liked square cropped thumbnails. They look great but misrepresent the original photograph. Maybe a greasemonkey script is the solution for this. Also piclens has never worked correctly for me in FF. - Rafael Robayna
Matt, one thing that I do is as I seen thumbnails come by in FF that I think I want to interact with I simply cmd-click on those thumnails. This keeps me on the same FF page but then opens the flickr photos in new tabs and I can tab through all of those pages one by one and see larger sizes, fave, comment, etc. - Thomas Hawk
Also if you want to let people know that you found their photo via FF. You can install the GM add referrer info script. This way they see a link to FF whenever you comment on a Flickr photo: http://6v8.gamboni.org/... See this comment to see what I'm talking about. http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Thomas Hawk
Just joined FF after reading your blog, Thomas. Thanks for the info. Although I find adding friends on FF to be tedious and frustrating. It should be a lot easier! - Mike
I'm enjoying your wonderful articles attached to Flickr pictures. It's a surprise when viewing Flickr pictures everytime there are lovely stories attached. Wish FF would flag/mark stories/videos in Flickr with some special icon. :-) - Mitchell Tsai
Good point about ctrl-click, Thomas (I'm on a PC). Also, I didn't think of it before, but you can just use Cooliris to bring up the Flickr page as well. That's easy! Don't know why I didn't think of that before! - Matt
I really like the idea of Friendfeed "discovering" my Flickr contacts who're also on Friendfeed and giving me the chance to subscribe to them. - Fraser Smith
Agreed. FriendFeed's presentation of your friends' photos and faves is far superior to that of Flickr. Come to think of it, FF seems to work better than most of the services it is aggregating :) - Brandon Wood
Love being able to see 25 pictures in FF when pressing the arrow key. I wish that FriendFeed would make 2+ posts when I publish/favorite more than 25 photos...the rest are lost. Also, if people comment or like my photos as FF is publishing them (e.g. only 10 photos have arrived), those comments get lost as the entry is replaced by a newer entry (with 25 photos)...I think the comments/like should be merged into the newer Flickr/Picasa entries. - Mitchell Tsai
See "How to see Top 100 Flickr Likes of personX" and "Viewing FriendFeed-Everyone Flickr feeds" at http://friendfeed.com/e... - Mitchell Tsai

I don't use Google Groups or email for discussions. If they want my input they have to use FriendFeed. Imagine that. I'm more committed to their tool than they are? Unreal. - Dave Winer
I knew there as something wrong with FF and this is it -- they don't jump in with both feet -- they dip a toe in here and there. It's nice to post links to articles and baby pics (congrats!) and trip pics (ditto) but put your person into this space. Then it'll really go somewhere. - Dave Winer
BTW the Twitter guys do the same thing. They are not among the power users of Twitter. - Dave Winer
Dave, I agree with you 100%. The commitment they show in using their own product is vital. And, a proper user profile page will be very nice. - Dewald Pretorius
I've had the same thought about a user profile page. I'm reading something and I wonder who the person is. Click on their name and -- nothing. Funny thing is that some reporters are starting to read FriendFeed, so if they want to have influence over their press they're going to have to show up here. Otherwise we're going to control their message. Heh. :-) - Dave Winer
I was also quite amazed to find a Google FF group.. I thought http://friendfeed.com/rooms... was where it was at. - Samuel Bostock
@Dave Winer: I disagree - with pretty much every aspect you state here :) Google Groups and the availability of standard ff functionality precede friendfeed rooms by years for the former service and something around half a year for the latter. Deriving any conclusions concerning committment to friendfeed from the usage of groups or email - or any other service that might be better suitable for the specific task - is rather subjective and not comprehensible. - Mustafa K. Isik
Actually Dave has a point - if content producers are meant to go to where the conversation is, without an easy way to find it all, then the same should be true for Friendfeed bug reports and feature requests. You can do searches based upon topics, but try searching based upon a permalink of a blog post - Andy Beard
I don't think rooms are the answer either. How I would do it -- add a command to the popup menu under More (above) that says -> Feedback to FF. Click on a comment and choose the command. Then it goes where ever they want it to go to be in their queue. If they want to respond, they do so in place, where the discussion is taking place. I've been doing this for a LONG time Mustafa, you have to come to the users, making them come to you -- you'll miss the good stuff (as they are). - Dave Winer
@Dewald Pretorius, @Dave Winer: What better, more precise and comprehensive profile information, beyond the full activity stream plus links to all kinds of services an individual uses and produces content on, could you possibly expect? I like that friendfeed makes for a platform that is not about people fleshing out a dedicated profile page and telling you how great they are - instead you get the chance to make up your own mind via a very authentic activity stream. - Mustafa K. Isik
[continued] Concerning a quick way to get an impression of who an ff user is and where his/her interests lie, a computed tag cloud (based on shared items, comments, liked items) could prove useful. - Mustafa K. Isik
The only issue FF would run into using their own system for feedback is the restriction on entry and comment length. However, they could easily lift those restrictions in a special room or on entries designated as feedback, feature requests, etc. There really is no excuse for them to not use their own system. - Dewald Pretorius
@Dave: "You have to come to the users, making them come to you -- you'll miss the good stuff (as they are)." Great observation. - Hutch Carpenter
Agree with Dave, would like to see profile pages on FF. A quick snapshot sort of page that gives you an idea of who the person is. Flickr does a pretty good job at this actually and could be a good model for what a profile page should look like. Profile pages should not limit bio length and should allow html. - Thomas Hawk
Each users page, especially their recent activity, is a great snapshot of who they are, I think. When I subscribe to someone, I look at those pages to make sure what I see is interesting. I think that's the best kind of a "profile" on a person you can get. - Jordan Hofker
You don't need a profile page on Friend Feed, you have access to the users profiles in the services on the right hand side. And therefore multiple profiles. - Toby Graham
Jordan, what you say is true, but what you see is a snapshot of a time-based "profile", which could give you different impressions of the same person on different days. Depends on what the person's FF feed pulled in on that day. A static profile area would alleviate that problem. - Dewald Pretorius
I kinda get the feeling that early on they've been sitting back and letting the community develop by itself, rather than leading the way. Which I totally agree with. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Full disclosure time: I gently rolled my eyes when I heard about FriendFeed, but I have to say I'm a huge fan now, if that kind of thing can be measured by how much time I spend on it! - Jeff Eddings
You test out a lot of these social/feed applications and just the odd one or two have that easy fit like a glove feel to them which means you use them day in day out - google reader was one and friendfeed is another... - David W

According to the general theory of relativity, the faster you approach the speed of light, the more time around you increases relative to your own(get your head around it). "However, in recent weeks I have started using Gmail as much more than an email host. With its gobs of storage, speed and tremendous search/tagging capabilities, you can transform it into a personal nerve center that's available from any computer or mobile device. When you tap into this power and combine Gmail with some other tools, it is perhaps the most essential site ever developed. Most of the following life hacks have not been documented. This series has several parts... * How to turn Gmail into a massive personal database (Gmail + the Google Toolbar) * How to get real-time news updates in Gmail (Gmail+ Google Talk + Twitter) * How to automatically store your bookmarks in Gmail (Gmail + del.icio.us + Yahoo Alerts) * How to manage Calendar and To-Dos in Gmail (Gmail + Backpack + GCal + GTalk + iMified) * How to blog from Gmail (Gmail + Wordpress/TypePad/Blogger + IMified)" - Leon Ho from Bookmarklet

Kinda strange, click any thumbnail and they all link to the first image. A buglet perhaps? - Fraser Smith
Oops, not on the Friendfeed site, only in the iGoogle module. Must investigate further. - Fraser Smith
D'oh! Not even iGoogle, it was in my gmail sent via sendmerss.com. I'll go hide in a corner now :o( - Fraser Smith

I have just found out about Trackmania (gotta download that one) - http://www.trackmania.com/fr/
I bought my son an older version of this a couple of years ago. It was a bit sniffy about the hardware that it would run on but when it ran, it was great. Now there's a free version, I'll have to download it too. Thanks for the heads-up. - Fraser Smith

Are you using some client to post to FriendFeed or just go to main website? Or do you use something elso to track conversations? Is there mobile client for FF? Any more tips for beginners and more experienced users?
Desktop Clients that support friendfeed and twitter: Alert thingy and twhirl - Cat Laine from Alert Thingy
when at home i use twhirl. when at a job site, i use the ff site. i do like the twhirl. - sean808080
I was using twhirl and I think it is the best client I've ever tried for following ff in realtime (and now it supports ff groups, too), but at the moment I use MySocial 24x7 as Firefox-Sidebar. Pros are that it is right in firefox and provides the possibility to post answers to twitter. I don't have it open all the time and so space is no issue and when I want to read more than just the... more... - Michael Hamann
i have twhirl, but i prefer the web interface. - Jansen Lu
I use its web interface because it is still cleaner than any other implementation. - Leon Ho
Posting from the website seems to be the most detailed way, allowing you to easily pick what feed/room to put it in... - Anthony Farrior
@Leon it's quite difficult to create a clean and well organized interface. i think twhirl is doing a quite good job. - Jansen Lu
I can't stand twirl. friendfeed is about the details. I don't need to sit and watch the stock tickertape. I feel bad for Alisters that are forced to see this silly blur of social interaction. (sorry about the curse before... I edited my comment) - Noah David Simon
To post blog posts to ff I use the Shareaholic extension b/c I can also post to every social site I want using it. If I want to follow posts and post normally, I just use the web app. - Joseph Z.
I'm using the web apps. Twhirl has never worked properly on either of my iMac Desktop's. The client option is a great concept and in my experience, poorly implemented. - Paul W. Swansen
I've tried Twhirl and Alert Thingy. I've got mixed feels about both. I find myself using the Web site more regularly for posting to FF. To just manage Twitter, I will probably use Twhirl or Twitterrific, but adding FF to the mix (with Twhirl only) makes for quite a lot of screen real estate devoted to these widgets. - John F Morton
i´m currently using twhirl, its a nice interface for getting the friendfeed-updates, but it seems a little bit buggy - Christoph Bauer from twhirl
There really isn't a client that does FF justice yet. Bonus points to twhirl guys for trying though. Anyway, on OSX just use Fluid ( www.fluidapp.com ) to create a SSB (single site browser) that behaves as a regular app, a menu bar extra or even embedded into your desktop. Quite simply it rocks hard, and is free. Fluid has a room here ( http://friendfeed.com/rooms... ). - John Samuelson
I'm still mostly using Friendfeed's web interface. - Morton Fox

What do you guys think of MobileMe? Do you think it will be a popular productivity suite when released? - Leon Ho
I'm not sure what it would give me that I don't already get, for free, from Google Apps for my domain. It might be a bit slicker in the interface but that's not worth the extra cost....via feedalizr - Fraser Smith
I agree with Fraser on this one, Not really seeing the benefits. Although toss in Itunes storage and download with this and I would try it!. - Tony C
I think its selling point is the push service to iPhone though. So it really depends if you think push service worth the price than syncing it thru USB? - Leon Ho
I don't have an iPhone and, as all my e-mail is web based (GAfyD), I don't think I'd benefit anyway. - Fraser Smith
i hope the push really works and is not as lame as the yahoo quasi-push. it's about time apple did something for .mac folks as this service has been the neglected step child for way too long. - sean808080 from twhirl
The demo of push service looks pretty promising, but never know until we test the actual product. - Leon Ho
If it's true push amongst every device in my home and abroad, then that alone is worth the price for me. - Joel Falconer
I'd like to know if more than one iPhone can "sync" to the same account. - Ben Vaughan from twhirl
With no iPhone, what's in it for us desktop users? - Paul W. Swansen
With regards to fixing .Mac it is a step in the right direct, but not far enough to get lots of people to buy in. I look at it as a very expensive way to wirelessy sync my contacts. - Chris McLean
well, mobileme got me thinking about taking the one-year-subscription - it closes the gap between my mac and "regular pcs" - Christoph Bauer from twhirl
I think this is a ground breaking service... 3 years ago. LIttle benefit unless you have an iPhone and even then i don't know. - Chris McLean
If you are happy using google apps there is no point. However if you are a small business and offline access is critical e.g. planes and trains then this is a simple alterative to exchange for an individual user. If apple add sharing of calendars/contacts plus private/public event invites then it could beat exchange for small businesses that use macs and iphones. - Adrian from twhirl
I am very much hoping this is going to be Exchange Lite for our small project team...fingers crossed. - John Samuelson

Tried the changelog page, still getting 1.1.2. It could be the corporate proxy but that usually refreshes after 24 hours....via feedalizr - Fraser Smith

"FriendFeed is becoming more and more popular, and if you’re not on it yet, you’re in the minority. While some people stop what they’re doing to complain about the ever-changing landscape of social networking - don’t get me wrong, a totally valid peeve - get a headstart on them by becoming an effective FriendFeed user." - Joel Falconer

What's the one thing you really want to have in Gmail?
For me, it's skins and may be even an exclusive Gmail branded desktop client ;) I know there are many email clients out there, but I want something that's Gmail branded. I <3 it and I'm addicted :) - Shankar Ganesh
