"Welcome to the Homebrew App Gallery at PreCentral.net! Like the gallery itself, the apps you'll find here are all beta and are for testing purposes only. They are all under development - use with care. To install them, you should use webOS Quick Install to start, then install fileCoaster. Each app has a selectable text field where you can copy the URL for the app to paste into fileCoaster to install."

Loving the homebrew apps. PrePod is awesome.

I love Youtube comments. they set the bar, the low bar, that is, to community forum threads.

I've also found them really useful if you're learning a language, because it's hyper-idiomatic and slang, and it's written, which is usually hard to find if you're not ina country. My friend from Micronesia goes there to chat with other people who speak his obscure language, and the Russian Matb language is there in droves. Anyways, a weird kind of ancillary usage.

Whenever I worry about the dialog on Friendfeed becoming degenerate, I look at a few comments on Youtube to remind myself what degeneracy really is.

Somehow, Obi-wan Kenobi seems appropriate here: "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

as an academic librarian i am enveloped in the world of written communication. to see it executed so poorly in those youtube comments is more than a little shocking.

Marie, don't ever read comments on newspaper stories, either. I don't know if it's like that everywhere, but the comments on our local paper are a racist, sexist, ignorant cesspool.
- Rachel Walden
That is often the case here in Seattle too, Rachel. You're not alone.

Does anyone know how to delete a group in friendfeed once you've created it? I made one trying to get back some of the virtual friend functionality (result: sucks) and now I can't figure out how to delete it and I keep getting requests to join.
I also have some private groups I created and somehow people are finding them and requesting to join. Frustrating. Anyway, I don't think you can delete a group, but you can unsubscribe from it and not see it anymore. Not sure if that will stop the join requests.

I guess that's the equivalent of setting it adrift in the wasteland.

"Betelgeuse is already nearing the end of its life and is soon doomed to explode as a supernova. When it does, the supernova should be seen easily from Earth, even in broad daylight." SPACE IS COOL!

Can't help feeling sorry for Yahoo. They've been almost reduced to just a brand. Most of their services were acquired and now they're using Microsoft's search.

+1 Dorothea. Fortunately--as pointed out in the Bloomberg piece--Netflix' distributed physical presence makes it sort of a poison pill for Amazon, since Amazon would then need to charge sales tax for a whole bunch of customers. (The piece was also a useful reminder: Netflix subscribers total about 9% of U.S. households...)

saw on techcrunch that everyone that is at zapos will still be there, including the ceo...wonder if things will still stay the same
- Sir Shuping
Andrew, based on my experience of working for a company that was acquired by another, larger, more powerful company, things will NOT stay the same, despite anything Amazon might say to the contrary.

I got a filling back in January and it still bothers me when I eat something crunchy. No discomfort before the filling, but now it does. Dentist can't find anything wrong. :(
- Glen Horton
Boo. My jaw just starts to hurt in the evening. I think I'm going to go back to my old dentist. The new one is more convenient to get to, but doesn't seem as gentle. :(

I returned my TS. Didn't like how the screen stayed on when charging and it didn't work with the plastic shell I put on the Pre. Love the concept though.

Is it sad that I find stuff like this fun or therapeutic?
- Glen Horton
Yeah, I feel the same way. Gives one a chance to update plugins, clean up theme files, etc. I must say, I think my WP installation feels zippier.
- Peter Murray
The topic came up during dinner conversations at the OLE Project meeting in Duke. I think my last one was circa 1997 or 1998. I was always one to take risks, I guess.

These days I use PowerPoint as a backup for my Google Docs presentations.
- Glen Horton
Glen -- Wow! Now that is a switch; PowerPoint as backup. Steve -- Never?

I remember making slides at the university, so some time after 2000, but not for a long time. Oh! The slides might have been photocopies of print reference tools to show in class. Can't remember otherwise.
- DJF
Peter, I'm probably just late to the game. Made my first professional presentation in 2004? I can't remember ever having to make transparencies for any purpose in my education or career.
- s t e v e
I guess I did some presentations before 2004, but the idea that the place I was presenting would have an overhead projector never crossed my mind.
- s t e v e
It's becoming less a question about projectors and more about Internet access. I export my Google presentations to PPT just in case I can't get online.
- Glen Horton
Never--but I still have a partial box of laser-printer transparency sheets (but no laser printer). When I was using transparencies, PPT wasn't really an option.
- Walt Crawford
Three years ago, but just b/c there was a question as to whether or not we would have the tech for the powerpoint in the room, while all rooms were slated to have overhead projectors. I would do it for the large conference in my field, too, because getting access to the tech for powerpoint (let alone internet access) is not easy because of the expense for the association (at least, that's what they tell us). Normally, I plan to not use either unless it is absolutely essential for me to have visuals.
- Katy S
I do the same as Glen these days, download a ppt version from Google Docs as a backup. Last time I made OHP sheets was about 2001 -- I didn't need 'em but I took 'em along as backup to Cold Spring Harbor.
