The stories she tells of dealing with government officials reminds me every day that I'm glad to be an American.

Likewise, I would never have been born. My father moved here from Iran back in the 70s and met my mom.

Especially one living in Silicon Valley where more than 10,000 have decided to settle. There are SOME upsides to having crappy governments around the world. :-)

I wanted to ask you if she still have family over there..

the shah was worse, which is why my grandfather left for England in 1925, unfortunately he passed on in 1978, but had returned to Iran towards the end of life.

One of the thugs stopped her in the street when she was 13 and said "why are you smiling" and threatened her with caning if she kept it up. Her friend was caned for simply sitting in a car with a boy she wasn't married to (the boy was caned too).

I had an Iranian girl friend named Layla, but she was from Paris. There's a very large Iranian community in Paris and most of them dream of returning to Iran

Lots of fun things in Silicon Valley were built by Iranians, including eBay. Imagine if @pierre had stayed in Iran and had built eBay there?
- Robert Scoble
Paul: Maryam wants to visit Iran with me. I don't think that would be a good idea. I would be too tempted to tweet a photo of their nuclear plant or something like that.
- Robert Scoble
yep eBay in Iran - :)) - but I love Persian food - does your wife make kebabs and pilaves?
- glfceo
Do not go to that horrible place. You will regret it. There are reasons that everybody tries to get the hell out of there.
- Eric Sabban
Robert - where do you get your 10,000 Persians in Silicon Valley number? Just curious.
- Soso Sazesh
Every Iranian I've met who was born and raised there dreams of returning some day, but so long as the country is dominated by these horrible regimes (first the Shah, and now the "Islamic Republic") I doubt any of them will return any time soon, if ever. Which is sad, because they do miss their homeland. I'd feel the same way if I had to flee Canada.
- Chris Charabaruk
Just go, I saw a Rick Steves travel show the other night and he went to Iran and it was wonderful

I had an engineering associate / friend in the late '70s whose family moved from Iran under the shah. He even changed his name to disasscoiate his past and heritage.

Soso: every year for New Years they get together at local parks and there's thousands of them. I assume that not every one shows up at the park so I'm doing a little counting and a little inferring. I might be off a little.

Let's agree that most TV news networks decided long ago that they would control the news. Remember swine flu? People blame the fuss about that on Twitter, yet it died everywhere as soon as the MSM stopped making it a big deal.

It's the weekend. There is no one in the newsroom on the weekend. When I worked there, we had to absolutely drag someone in for the Princess Diana accident...the community was going nuts and there we were, with no broadcast news, no confirmation, no nothing.

Livestation.com. You can watch France 24, Al Jazeera English, Euronews and Press TV, the Iranian propaganda channel. Coverage on all of those

I have to say the Nambu search ( searches twitter, friendfeed, one riot, yahoo news) has been great for keeping on top of this, and it's essentially real-time: http://img.skitch.com/2009061...

CNN is a mock news feed. It's a misinformation provider.

CNN has access to Twitter and more. So why can't they give the proper attention to this story?
- Donald Wilson
It's actually all so called TV news outlets. Internet is a better source of news. To be fair though, sometimes, on duty journalists/editors do not have the last say in what's covered as 'news'. Simple politics and ratings. I usually tune in to UK TV channels than I do US for news, that too very rarely. Sad but true.
- Moushumi Kabir
My last thought on this, no matter what happens, US definitely needs to stay out. It's Iran's internal matter just as 2004 re-election of Bush was our internal matter. As shocking as it was to the rest of the world (I still struggle with the fact ppl I know actually voted for him - twice!!), US did vote for Bush the second time.
- Moushumi Kabir
For people interested in tracking what is happening regarding the irannian election on Twitter, here is a dashboard: http://www.twazzup.com/search... An amazing showcase of how new forms of communication make it much harder for dictatorships to control people!
- Edwin Khodabakchian
It's difficult to get a right news even for me who know Persian, Iranian Tv doesn't support anything about street riots at all, Face book and You tube are filtered over there! No SMS! No mobile, even FF is filtered for them ! :|

CNN finally pipes up and mentions Facebook pictures inciting violence in Iran - but no update. Oh, yeah, and the fact that access to internet has been cut off. Is that the only news? Now on to the Letterman/Palin fight! I am heading back to online updates.

I often find US cable TV insular when it comes to foreign affairs - coverage of Barack Obama's recent speech in Egypt was a case in point. But CNN ignoring the Iranian protests is shameful.
- Peter Dowley
I was always kinda of excited about the prospect of a 24 hour news network. Imagine how many more stories or how much more in-depth you could got on a single item. That really didn't happen. Covering stories, particularly any story happening outside NY or LA, is expensive. So we saw CNN put on a bunch of shows with pundits. They leaned to the left, so FOX could come along and lean to...

- Matthew McCowan
Twitter is susceptible to manipulation by propagandists--for example the protests in Moldavia. In that case it was a legit election that the protesters just didn't like the result of. A flash mob does not a majority make.
- Joe Knapp
Joe: good point, but many of us didn't fall for that crap and even then it cleaned itself out pretty quickly.
- Robert Scoble
CNN died in 2001, when Tom Johnson retired. Quite a few of the top talent left around the same time, not wanting to be part of Jamie Kellner's efforts to be more like FOX. Cable "news" is a ghetto, and I never, ever, ever turn it on. Robert, you'll enjoy this: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_dai...

Looks like CNN is finally picking up the coverage today. Christiane Amanpour is live in Teheran.
- Nils Sandin
Just starring to catch up to last nights events. Amazing the lack of big media coverage on Iran.
- Robert Wilkins
Been watching CNN International in China for two days and I can't agree with you. The reporting seems to be matching what I'm seeing on BBC and reading in NYTimes and Twitter. Saying they should be "ashamed" is a bit invective.
- David Geller
"CNN International . . . seems to be matching what I'm seeing on BBC and reading in NYTimes and Twitter." - CNN-I is a totally separate production team, and has a totally different business model from CNN-"Domestic."
- John Craft
Robert Scoble: three bloggers have been on top of Iran developments: Andrew Sullivan, Juan Cole and Robert Dreyfuss. It seems safe to say now that we have just witnessed a coup in Iran.
- Sean McBride
who makes the decisions over there at Cnn?
- Denise
All these comments are so stupid and ill-informed. Not a single one of you has ever tried to take a camera crew into a totalitarian country. I have. You don't just walk around. Easy to twitter for one person. Very hard to get pictures! Go and try it, and until then. Shut up!
- Prokofy Neva
@Sean, i agree we have witnessed a coup--the sustained fight lasting a week with people in the street every day, making police run away, NYT editorial by Reuel Marc Gerecth has a good analysis of what it means, and AlJazeera http://www.youtube.com/watch... has a good analysis. the action on the streets is having a huge effect, not just on Iran but on the Middle East.
- Eleanor Wynn
Prokofy Neva, agreed that no new organizations can get in there, but any of the news channels could rebroadcast key videos, photographs and analysis of this very major geopolitical event--it is really disgusting to go through the TV channels and see the dreck that is on when something major is happening--our local news channels will cover a weather event non-stop, why doesn't a major channel cover this/
- Eleanor Wynn
the citizen journalism tells the story in a way noone else could. you are right there in the middle of the crowd with all the changes of pace and direction, the shaky camera itself tells a story and the sounds. it is like actually being there--that is why the twitter and youtube coverage is the real coverage--they don't have to process, package and add a local angle to it that waters down the effect
- Eleanor Wynn
That is Rob LaGesse showing off our new shirts -- in Silicon Valley you don't actually need to ship anything as long as you have a cool T- shirt. ;-)

Nice Gil. Sameer - you can send this link to that email address.
- Hutch Carpenter
Is there such a thing as a too-full Alltop list? I have several more possibles in my feed reader but I was trying to drop my favorites first.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I love FriendFeed :). Awesome stuff. Just remember, it needs to be a blog about E2.0, as opposed to a E2.0 practitioners personal blog. Also, I believe they require the RSS feed and not the blog URL so please add the feed. Ill send this over at the end of the day. Once the page is up, you can still submit your feed via a form.
- Sameer
Crikey, does this mean I have to rebrand my blog to fit in with my target audience? I'm about E2.0 this year but I wasn't planning on marrying it.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, I'm not sure how they curate this. Looking at other categories, everything seems quite topical. We'll find out....
- Sameer
I imagine it's as simple as "do your last ten headlines fit this niche or not". Hmm, time to scan my feed.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
thanks everyone. I've emailed this link + a link to the blogroll that Gil has on his site.
- Sameer
This is an unbelievably rich list! And, it's symbolic of the incredible generosity of the FF community. (If only every office and industry operated this way.) Thanks for sharing these resources.
- V Mary Abraham
there should be the odd web designer in the valley somewhere.
- Zee.
I would recommend that they first think what kind of content they want to have online. Product information is good bet, but what other things they should share to people? What about history of company? Telling stories make people feel more sympathy to company. (And yes, I could have some recommendation for those designers but I have to look from my bookmarks first...)
- Daniel Schildt
Given the economy they need to consider only 2 things right now: 1) how do I acquire customers; 2) how do I keep the customers I get (return business/upsell) - That should be the only purpose of the site. HOW they get there is what a good creative can help them with.
- Brian Roy
SWOT analysis, strategies evaluation, objectives setting, execution planning. In that same order
- delbo
engagement, loyalty, turn customers into sales-people. 'social-ize' your products
- MikeAmundsen
Make sure your website is tested on all platforms, loads quickly, gets to the point and is attractive without being gaudy. Showcase your work in the most attractive manner possible, but keep in mind who your key customers are; What kind of glass they make (art?, Practical?, sheets for artists?) will determine how they market. One thing they teach you in an MBA is that you can't just sell a product, you have to market to a customer- the first q they should ask themselves is who do they want as their customer
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
My tips? First, think about how people are using Google to find you. Put those search terms in your title tag. Second, put a simple sentence about what you do for customers and how you are different from your competitors. Include those same search terms. Put that at the top of your page. After that, start a blog, make it personal. Add some stories of what you do. Tips for customers who are looking to hire you. That, too, will help you with Google.
- Robert Scoble
It doesn't tell me their story. Doesn't give me any reason why I should pick them over any other glass company.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
outsource it to asia for low cost upgrade, get a top notch result, can hook u up
- imran
Agree with Alex. I want to know what makes them great, even without saying "we are better than everyone else." Maybe teach us something about glass. People may think a certain way about glass, but if we have a better understanding of what goes into giving us the product, we may gravitate towards them.
- Evan
forget the Web site... how's the glass? perhaps that is the problem...
- Jon Price
Make sure the fundamentals are covered. Easy to find address, phone number, other corporate info (you'd be amazed how many sites blow this). Make it easy for a customer to get in touch from every page--the moment they find what they want they can get in touch with the company and order it or get more answers. Another bit of advice is one page = one product. Get them into google on each individual item. Sitemaps are also important and good header tags.
- Andrew Leyden
Marketing is more imp than product, right hand rule, unless u sell oil/gas
- imran
I didn't find them on yelp. Might want to encourage customers to start some entries. I didn't see any customer reviews. There's no tag line. I like to see something about good prices, good work, leave the place clean, on time, that sort of thing. The examples of their work are too big and there are no descriptions of what makes their work good.
- Todd Hoff
Better yet, move to Dubai, your friend will be sold out in a month or so
- imran
Start a blog and a short video show on YouTube. Write the most basic posts about glass company themes. go to Yahoo Answers and answer every questions related to glass/windows.

I'd volunteer to help your friend - most businesses have fundamental biz development issues - they need to develop referral systems, focus on client education, reactivate dead leads, develop backend email system w/frontend free ebook optin above the fold answering most common client questions, and personalize the website with owner profile. It's cold and not that informative. Position...

Robert- I would be happy to send an complete analysis / recommendation. It sucks watching a good business fail with a bad site. I have some business basics articles I can narrow them in with, I know translating all this "net jargon" is hard for most brick and mortar businesses.
- 123socialmedia
Thanks for all the tips, I just forwarded this.
- Robert Scoble
they are struggling not because of their web site - this is for sure. They need to focus on their overall integrated sales/marketing strategies: like partnerships with contractors, etc; cross-marketing, referral-based incentives. People in general do not purchase these types of services because of the nice looking web site - period. There are few simple things that could be done to beautify their web site, even they will somehow drive folks to this web site-will not lead to more closed business- more needed
- glfceo
more content, should have a unique page for every major glass company out there. a page for every major style of glass/glass doors.Should have a nice section that can be used as a resource by potential customers to draw them in and generate a lead. Also all the META info for the homepage(and i imagine every other page) needs a revamp.
- sean percival
Answer three questions before you start: 1. Who am I talking to? 2. What do I want from them? 3. What do they want from me?
- Michael Markman
also the mom and pop stuff is always very hard, ive done about 200 ecommerce sites, mostly for small companies like this. their focus is always on the biz first and website last, today it and in some cases it should be the other way around.
- sean percival
Scobleizer, I guess it depends on their budget. If they have some budget allocated to improving their website, they should hire a consulting firm specializing in web and graphics design, like Emily Chang. However, if their budget is limited, they can search for students at nearby universities and see if any student designers will take it as a student project, or even have it as a class project competition.
- imabonehead
Nothing says personal like some raw videos going up now and then showing some aspect of the business. Be it some cutting taking place and the owner talking about the business somewhat. Once it's genuine and not a "well I saw someone say to do this so let me do this" kind of thing. You would know what I mean, Robert. I think.
- Evan
I'd like to see an http://www.englishcut.com style site go up for them and think that could work well. Of course using the web effectively might not translate well into business for a glass company...The other question is how effectively are they exploiting other avenues of advertising. Are they going the extra mile to get and maintain good word of mouth solicitations from current/past customers? Etc.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
selling glass during real estate troubles is interesting way to to target potential customers with sense of humor
- A. T.
also, making search on google maps with string "glass near 63 Washington Street Santa Clara, CA 95050" (remove parethesis before search) and zooming out shows how many glass ships around -- I don't know what they are counting for...
- A. T.
they don't appear on page 1 of google results for "santa clara glass." lot of drilling down to find them using maps, and they have NO reviews. on web site, gotta scroll down to find out "What we do." also, glass product named "Windows 95" does not inspire confidence
- Karim
I would say that the bottom line comes down to storytelling. If I can go to their site and learn about them - what is their story? how did they get into the glass business? what makes them great? - I will gain an emotional connection and they've got my (and many others') business. Tell me the story of the process, let me gain the knowledge and make me feel like an insider because I know the terms and processes and don't feel like a fool when I call. That will make me a customer too.
- Shawn Kelley
I sent a lengthy e-mail to your fastcompany addy. Please forward to your friend. :)

Before the glass company invests a lot of time, effort, and money into upgrading their Web site, they should run a small PPC (Google Adwords is your best bet) campaign to test the waters locally (under product/service related keywords like auto glass, glass windows, etc.). They can direct the Google ads to specialized landing pages that provide a call-to-action for the visitor - a small...
- Drive Thru
Let's put internet aside for a sec (did I say that?). Seems to me they're lacking focus. Wikipedia tells me that Santa Clara has 100k pop. with median household income 76k$; yet, the showers seem quite expensive. Are they targeting the local market or also neighboring counties? Who are their customers cies or households? Before revamping their website, I think they should review their positioning. The most surprising is that they present themselves as subcontractors, maybe that's where they should start?
- Zack Brandit
my company 9 consults projects like this. have him email me and we'll do it pro bono. patricia@whatis9.com.

Great thread. Good advice here for any company.

Four months ago Alex Scoble and Shawn Kelley talked about this business needing to do more storytelling. That was before FriendFeed added geoRSS support and added some real-time enhancements. The Quickcam pro 9000 is definitely the one to get. It has become the industry standard for webcams.
- Steven (optionshiftk)
Many will suggest the higher-end Logitechs with Zeiss lenses but I find they produce images that are too soft. A $30 MSFT Lifecam 1000 is a great little camera and should work well. Lots of Eyejot users have them.
- David Geller
I have a Logitech QuickCam, which is pretty nice. I think the Pro is even better, but was more than I wanted to spend at the time.
- Jaemi Kehoe
If you're using it on a laptop I'd go with any of the new ones by MS with the magnetic clip. The NX6k looks spectacular. It really works well and you get to foget it's there.Otherwise for a desktop I'd go with a Quickcam orbit. It's really amusing and has more resolution.
- Georgios Kasselakis
why dont you use this affiliate link to buy one -
- Allen Stern
Allen: you are funny! I actually would have bought it off of your affiliate link if you did put one to the Microsoft cam that Georgios recommended.

FWIW, my QuickCam Orbit works fine with Windows 7
- Phil Glockner
My birthday is Monday. What are you getting me?
- Jim #TeamMonique
Absolutely. We stream live from our offices during business hours with the Logitech QuickCam Pro. Clear as a bell and worth every penny.
- Troy Malone
the really expensive ones that follow you!
- sofarsoShawn
Robert, the QuickCam Pro 9000 by Logitech is amazing. The Orbit AF is overpriced and does basically the same features.
- Michael Forian
Another Quickcam pro 9000 fan here. Clearest picture, best usability for a reasonable price.
- Lucretia Pruitt
yes, I believe that's the one I have

Robert - I'm a huge fan of the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. It's the one I used for almost all of the later episodes of Mashable Conversations. Works perfectly on PC or Mac.

The higher-end Logitec Quickcams are excellent. Zeiss lens. 9000 pro is great,

I have this one and I love how portable it is and how good the quality is. It comes with a portable stand and a carry bag. http://www.logitech.com/index...

I've ordered the Quickcam Orbit AF for numerous people and they really liked it. The price difference between it ($100.99) and the Quickcam Pro 900 ($89.99) is $11 on Newegg right now when you use promo code EMCABBGCD. Here's the camera link http://www.newegg.com/Product... . There...

Go all out with multiple video cameras and a NewTek TriCaster.

Wow, I'm suprised to see that Microsoft has 22 webcams for sale on Newegg while Logitech only has 14... I think the other reason I'd pick Logitech over Microsoft is software. Microsoft has a terrible habit of abandoning hardware products with regards to software/drivers. MS Fingerprint reader or MS Broadband Networking products are a perfect example of that...

Definitely a Mac with the built in iSight.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 for the price is very nice. Store on Amazon has them four 25 bucks. Excellent picture and sound.

you mean you aren't going to film off your i-phone anymore?
- Prokofy Neva
Projofy: I am doing less and less of that because of the quality, yes.

Robert - Microsoft released a special version of their Lifecam software for Windows 7 which works really nicely with mine (NX notebook series). You can find it here : http://www.microsoft.com/hardwar...

Quickcam Pro 9000 has nice filters to add a beard, crown, Robot head to your face. Really impresses the 7-year-olds in your life, and chicks too.

You should get a blue microphone "eyeball", it's a good quality microphone with an HD webcam attached, would be cool for interviews.
- Daniel Matthews
I was going to get a flip soon, but now I'm fully going this route - Blue have a great brand as high end microphones (but most don't know that they are now no longer hand made as in times past - and are now made in China... So I'd have to check this out in the flesh before I bought it).
