I'm in. But, er, um, I'm all for embracing your feminine side and all that, but what are you doing in there, Chris?
- Laura Norvig
I'm in there because I'm site owner and if something goes awry and the Group admin isn't around... well... contingencies. It's Chantal's group, and she let me in... so I guess that means she sees me as a girl? :)
- l0ckergn0me
I'm not sure if I should tell Sara about this
- Noah David Simon
you know, i was wrong (such a common occurrence). There were lots of guys commenting on that gals heartbreak on her blog, but Chris is the only guy in Girl Geeks.

finally one of the sharing and/or micromedia sites got the simple group thing right - this is working well for us with the Social Media Club room which replaced our mailing list - it is also working pretty well for a research project at my agency we just started yesterday

I have added the Friendfeed app to my Facebook profile. I love how I can share something from my Google Reader, then it shows up on Friendfeed, Facebook, Blog Catalog, MyBlogLog, etc. I can have activity in many places with one click!

Remove both ends from a tomato past can and thoroughly wash it. Carefully bend one open end of the can into the tulip shape. The metal is soft enough that it bends it easily, but you might want to use some household items to help you bend in the details (like the petal points on the tulip)

I've been trying to solve the dilemma of having them all in one place (which means I can't get to them if I'm not in that place) and storing them with a web service (which meant I am trusting them with my passwords! security could be fixed by encryption but what happens if the company goes away?). I haven't come up with a good solution yet.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
I can't because they are really long - up to 20 characters, symbols , and numbers. Naw, I just made that up. LOL

I am forever cycling to a new password, it does get tough to remember at times!

1Password on the Mac with their great my.1password.com syncing service for all other platforms or when I am no way near my machine.

I am using MiniSafe for storing all my passwords and synching them with my BlackBerry. To generate passwords I recommend the Automated Password Generator online - http://twurl.cc/39b - creates pronounceable passwords which are easy to remember.

I always get that 10 second dumb stare at the screen when I'm trying to remember what my password is. Then it's like someone smacked me in the head... "oh yeah, that's it."

I have a couple different usernames and passwords for different kinds of sites/services, and write them all down on a piece of paper that I keep in a fireproof safe. I change them all every 6 months.

I use one really really long passphrase so that I can use it across multiple, yet secure, services but which would intimidate anybody trying to look over my shoulder. One thing I find important for sites is to use free text security questions so that I can be free to lose/forget my password but to have a unified security question across all services. This would be ideal but hasn't been implemented very well.

This is a critical topic! Networks are valuable and increasingly observable to business partners, competitors, (potential) employers, and even customers. Managing your network will be a part of your You, Inc. valuation--invest in it. Another great topic/post Chris!

Great article! I use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and now FriendFeed. These networks have allowed me to meet new folks, stay in touch with old friends and get great info on the social media/marketing area I enjoy. Twitter is also where I learned about the 'twebinar' you did yesterday. Great info and great networking using the hashtags in Twitter! After recently leaving my job, I have...

Jill mentions a subtle point that I see all the time--"After recently leaving my job, I have been actively working my network..." I see this all of the time, especially on LinkedIN, people come alive and begin working their network when they are starting to look for a new job or get separated from a job. It is so important to invest in you network (with value to it) so much earlier. The dividends will be much higher!
- Bill Rice
from twhirl
I agree with Bill. The best time to engage your network is when you have something to give to it, not when you need to get something from it. Paying it forward is the best way to ensure success from your network in the future.
- Morgan
Bill, maybe a better way to put it I have been able to spend more quality time with my network. How about that?! I've been active in Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn for some time, but I've had some additional time to learn more about networks like FriendFeed and spend a little more time commenting. :)
- Jill Howard Allen
Right on Jill/Bill. LinkedIn and Twitter have really been a BIG help. Now with Twinkle to augment my more LOCAL want/need to meet new early adopters here in my own back yard... I finally feel in a position to leverage that network one of these days when I need to most. Instead of having to try and build a network under duress and sub-optimal conditions. And, of course, I'm available as a resource to many more people (which has been a lot of fun).
- Gerald Buckley
Jill, Sorry I wasn't implying you were one of those people investing in their network too late. I just thought you made an excellent subtle reference to a mistake (if you haven't been following Chris' suggestions before) I have seen. I can't tell me how many times when someone starts looking or they are let go that I will get barraged with old, suddenly good enough to be accepted...

It's funny that I should see this post today--I spent a lot of time this morning/afternoon connecting with people in my networks through blogs, Twitter, email, chat, face-to-face--it's been one of those days that took the reins in its own hands & led me away from my schedule. :-) Just a couple months ago I would have felt really nervous at this point, because I "spent the whole day chatting & didn't get anything done." But...wow. I have done *tons*. (Now the dog wants to network, so I'm off to play fetch!)
- Christine Taylor
I totally agree with your approach to friending people on FF. I am slow to friend new people unless they are personal friends, web acquaintances, or someone that consistently has something interesting to say. I see no problem with following people and not having them follow me or visa versa. For me FF is not only about communicating with friends, but is also about getting & sharing quality information with like minded people. My goal is to have a quality experience while keeping the noise to a minimum.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Great post Louis! I do not auto follow people that follow me either. When someone follows me, I do take the time to look at their feed, likes and comments and judge if their interest are similar to mine. I try to review my subscribers (that I'm not subscribed to) weekly with the same criteria to see if I should be scribed to them.
- Justin Korn
"The way I choose to follow people on FriendFeed was first, people I knew, or engaged with elsewhere, second, following people who engaged in my activity through comments and on the feeds of the others I followed, and third, friends that those I follow engaged with, and whom I shared interests." - Same here. I also look at activity on FriendFeed, if someone just signed up and added their twitter feed I don't really see a point in following (unless their twitters are extremely interesting).
- John Duff
I agree with Justin, I don't reciprocate a follow until I see the user's contributions to the friendfeedosphere. Same thing with Twitter (which is getting spammier lately)
- Jorge Escobar
Louis, I still think you're the exception to the rule, maybe Scoble to, because you interact with people even if you don't follow them. I still think though that many in the so-called A-List don't care about their followers aside from bragging rights, which is why reciprocity isn't unreasonable as a mark of respect
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan, appreciate it. I expect there's no "one right way" to engage. I just wanted to be sure people understood why I do what I do, and that if I don't have the automatic follow, it's no personal sleight. I expect to engage with everyone I can, when I can. It's for others to shoot me down if they think I'm tripping over my ego. So far, I hope, I'm safe.
- Louis Gray
This is why I say you define yourself by who you follow. If you only follow people who use these tools as broadcast media, then you define yourself as a consumer and/or a fanboy/follower. If you follow only people who participate with you, then you are a participant. If you follow jerks, then you are most likely a jerk yourself (or will soon become one, because that's what you value). If you follow smart people, etc. etc.
- Robert Scoble
my 2cents:1) immeadiate 'refriending' - whether its twitter, ff, fb, myspace or any of teh zillions of SNs out there - rewards the spammers and time wasters. 2) If I follow you because I think YOU"RE interesting, even if I comment on your feeds or blogs, I don' EXPECT that what i blog about will be interesting to you. 3) (value for money !!) I don't have the RESOURCES to follow back and read everybody - I have to discriminate somehow, regardless of how arbitrary it seems to you (or me)
- martin english
from twhirl
Question: what's the etiquette when you're ending a relationship (irl)? I defriended on some, but linkedin, facebook ,flickr seemed diffuse enough that you could easily ignore someone's status. Chat- definitely removed, and twitter definitely removed also. Is this super geeky of me? Ha
- anna sauce
Sometimes, it's good to stop talking and just listen. In fact, if you're so busy forever talking you never listen, and listening is learning. It's all a balance. With FriendFeed you CAN do something quite successfully you can't do in "real life", and that's have a one-sided conversation. You talk, I listen or vice versa. It works well at times. I shall go shut up now, and read some more.
- Ian May
my 0.02 - Don't never ever tell me how to use Twitter or Friendfeed. If you don't like how I use these sites, then unfollow / unfriend me. I got more important things to worry about. Someone at SocialMediaCamp SF was talking about "rules for good twittering" and I just about lost it.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Brian, I don't care how you use Twitter or Friendfeed, and nor should I. It's your business. There should be no rules, except those we impose on ourselves so we can manage the flow. I might have nothing better to do all day, except browse friendfeed; you might get two hours a week. How on earth then, can there be a "right" way or a "wrong" way.

- Lisa Creech Bledsoe
from twhirl
I'm with Dennis on this one. I think it's scary. I don't want marketers telling me the best search result. And yet, I *do* want humans looking at them. Think about Mahalo. Is that also monumentally wrong? Hmm... What if this ISN'T GoogleDigg (which it looks like) but GoogleMahalo? Where's Jason?
- Chris Brogan
My understanding is that you'll be able to use 'straight' Google search, and/or the Digg-like search. If not, then it should be. I don't see why this is so scary - it offers the best of both worlds, both the machine-based election for what you're searching on, and the human-based. And would it be so easy to game? Can you really game Google? As in, something that large? And if so, how does that make it lesser than Digg - assuming that is also gamable - or indeed current Google?

No Natali Del Conte either. Seems more like a "Female Bloggers Influential To Other Females" list. Not so much a list of bloggers that have appeal to men and women, except for some like Gina, Veronica, Cali, etc.

Well Female bloggers usually gets 'popularity' faster...but nice list.

This reminds me that had I not given up on the first blog I started back in 98, maybe I'd be on this list. But I don't have the drive and passion these very worthy women have! Congrats to you, Veronica and all on the list! More importantly, keep doing what you do, because it is important and valuable.
- Shawna Benson
What an impressive list! Quite a few I follow already, but nice to have some more to check out.

ok which one s/we get Playboy to cover ? Remember TC's post of late ?
- Peter Dawson
Why does there have to be a separate list for most influential male/female bloggers? Why not just a list for the 50 or 100 most influential bloggers? Why the gender distinction?
- Michael Tefft
After posting about the bikinibloggers of Urlesque & the wish for naked bloggers of Playboy at http://www.aboutblank.nl it was worthwile to pay some attention to influential female bloggers. Really influential, I'm talking about. But why do all these American sites pay so much atttention female bloggers, I wonder. So sudden, I mean.
- Ton Zijp
whole story is suspect due to claim that blogging pair coined term "fugly" - WTF! :-)
- Deva Hazarika
What does it have to do with America, Ton Zijp?
- Andy DeSoto
Andy, just that the attention is there so suddenly, in such a way that they all make a list (20 bloggers Urlesque wants to see in bikini, 9 Playboy wants to see naked, 50 really influential according to N x E). I follow news about weblogs worldwide, I publish about it daily, so for me it's really surprising that in just a few days all these sites are concentrating at female bloggers. I don't take conclusions on that, but it really surprises me. July = bikinimonth? Like Urlesque said?
