“Superman does what is right and doesn't do what he thinks is wrong. Batman just does what needs doing. Superman looks cleaner but deep down he is more fucked up than Batman ever will be.”
14 hours ago - Link
Superman feels that he must embody the spirit of justice in order to have the privilege of being a crime fighter, so any conflict he has he deals with in private in his fortress of solitude. Batman feels it is his calling and his curse to fight crime; its something thrust upon him so he views it differently. He is willing to do what he feels needs to be done and make that sacrifice of innocence so that others might not have to make the same choice. - Aaron Krug
It seems strange that Batman feels that it was thrust upon him. He has no super power that compels him to fight. He's just rich, bored, and has revenge in his blood whereas Superman actually has a power that he has to live with. Technically Batman isn't any different than you or I, except for the fact that he's fictional - Lindsey Smith
It was thrust upon both Superman and Batman. They were both, in a manner of speaking, *put* in their respective situations. And I have a feeling no amount of solitude will help get over the side effects of near omnipotence. The temptation to set things straight must play havoc within him. - Vijayendra Mohanty
This is, in fact, one of the more interesting FF discussions I've seen this seek. Strangely apropos as well. - Steve Spalding
An important facet of Clark Kent is that he was raised by the Kents and that is where his values come from; writers like to explore how he would have been different if he landed in the Soviet Union or even by an Amish family. Likewise, Bruce Wayne is a product of nurture also, except with him it is the drive to never see what happend to him happen again - RAPatton
Was hoping you'd chime in, RAP. :) - Yolanda
One thing that I think is interesting is that Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker, arguably the three most popular characters of their genre, are all orphans and that influences them all. Clark ended up with the Kents who turned him into a boy scout, Bruce was isolated by choice and had no strong substitute parental figures (Alfred and Leslie both served him) and Peter was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, that were like the Kents, but then lost his Uncle in a way that makes him feel forever guilty - RAPatton
I like to see it this way. Batman represents the human condition. He has known pain and suffering. He has met adversity. He learnt, in his own way, to deal with it all. Superman represents the God condition. He knows responsibility and power and the pressure of being a hero. He deals with it his way. Only, its not something many can relate to. In the stories, I once read of him needing his contacts with humanity to keep his focus on life and the world. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Vijayendra, that is very astute, because Superman, in some ways, is a religious figure; In some futures people even create a church of superman. Like Moses, he traveled alone in a small basket to adoptive parents and it is argued that his greatest ability is to lead by example and show us the way. - RAPatton
I doubt the leading by example is working well for Superman. I don't see a radical change in the way people behave in the Superman universe, in fact I see more people playing victim waiting for him to save them - Lindsey Smith
I had a conversation with this comic book artist friend of mine a few days ago and we were wondering about how important it is to have a messed up parental history to get to be a superhero. :) I think foster parents represent responsibility. They take responsibility (they don't have to) and in the process, teach responsibility. Applies to Spidey and all other orphaned heroes. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Lindsey I feel the reason that Batman feels his job was thrust upon him was because of his original impetus for becoming what he is was not something he ever wanted or would have asked for. His parents being killed in front of him ripped his innocence away at a young age, something which he feels puts him in a unique position to do the things that we cannot in order to ensure that we never have to. Batman makes no bones about it, he's one of the fallen, he's working so that we don't have to be too. - Aaron Krug
What can you expect from a guy from Krypton? IMHO this facet of Kent Clark isin't explored enough. Superman returns made a weak pass at it, but didn't follow it up. - Roberto Bonini
Couldn't have said it better Aaron. That is what I like about Batman. He doesn't even talk about his job. No telling the bad guy how bad he is. It's almost as if he is detached from his work. - Vijayendra Mohanty
Vijayendra I agree with you that no amount of solitude will cure what Superman has to wrestle with near daily. He has to wrestle with conflict internally and externally, representing our daily struggle on a macro scale. Superman has to ensure every second of the day that he is not using his powers for ill and becoming what he hates, but also that he is not being taken advantage of and used by those who would have him use his power in a seemingly good fashion with ulterior motives. - Aaron Krug
The difference between Superman and us is because he is the only one of his kind he has to bear this weight completely alone. This too, reflects on our own condition. We all have to make sure we are adhering to our own moral code and not being taken advantage of, and some of that will always be an internal struggle that no other one can understand. - Aaron Krug
Roberto: Hollywood does have its limitations. They can't call up on a history like comics can (not yet anyway). Especially since the history consists of the old Christopher Reeves movies. - Vijayendra Mohanty
There is a difference between doing good because you can, and because you want to. Superman does what he does because he has the power to do it, and there is no one else like him. He could have very easily gone the other way around, and that would have created effin' bad guy. Bruce on the other hand has human limitations, but he chose to go beyond that and do what he could to help the people. He slowly sabotaged his own life so that he could come out as someone who would be an icon of hope for the people. - adityavm
Ran out of words back there - So, to sum it up, Bruce is way more of a hero than Superman because he's doing something he doesn't need to, and has to really go "out of his way" to accomplish. For Superman, defeating a villain is as easy as waking up in the morning (which I've wondered if he ever does, or if he sleeps in the blue/red suit). No biggie. I admire people who move away from their natural tendency to do something big. - adityavm
Aditya: After the crisis storyline, they have made a lot of efforts to bring Superman closer to human levels of existence. He is still stronger than any human, but he has limits as well. If you have watched the recent Justice League episodes, you will remember him getting thoroughly beaten up time and again. - Vijayendra Mohanty

English coastlines in danger of crumbling away, says National Trust
15 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"They are the breathtaking landscapes and historic buildings which help define the south-west coast of England.   The report says 170 miles of coastline could be affected by erosion The familiar, rugged coastlines, cliffs and beaches of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset are quintessentially English. Ancient monuments, pathways and sheltered harbours all provide clues to a rich maritime history. But the National Trust, responsible for the care of special places across the country, warns many of its sites in the south-west are now at risk from sea level rise, flooding and erosion brought by climate change." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet

'Nanotech search' for antibiotics
16 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
From BBC News: "UK researchers are using microscopic "nanoprobes" to find new drugs to tackle antibiotic resistance. The tiny ultra-sensitive probes can measure how well a drug binds to bacteria and its ability to weaken and destroy the bug. The researchers tested the silicon-based technology on vancomycin, one of the few remaining antibiotics against infections such as MRSA The initial results are published in Nature Nanotechnology. It is the first time this type of nanotechnology has been used in screening for new drugs." - Mark Trapp via Bookmarklet

on a related but more serious note, at one large organization I worked for many years ago, their ignorance regarding linguistic issues (including different forms of English) led to unfortunate consequences. e.g., blacklisting profiles that listed a (real) U.K. city, censoring expression from users whose (real) last names contained words which were considered vulgarities in American English, and so on. - Adam Lasnik

When we moved back to the USA from England, we warned my son's school's principal about "language issues." She said, "What language issues? Don't they speak English in England?" We said, "Ok, he needs to pick up some rubbers for class." She suddenly understood. Spotted Dick is great, BTW. - Glen C
Glen: I certainly hope he was able to keep his pecker up when teased about using rubbers. - David HC Soul
Indeed, I've visited England enough times to quite personally understand the language gap (and I don't just mean the Tube's "Mind the Gap" which inexplicably causes us yanks to chuckle every time). And Mona, so what did the *chocolate* version taste like? :) - Adam Lasnik
