"SAN FRANCISCO — In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs based on its Chrome Web browser. The operating system, called Chrome OS, is initially intended for use in the tiny, low-cost portable computers known as netbooks, which have been selling quickly even as demand for other PCs has plummeted. The move is likely to sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers. “Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS,” said Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director, in a post on a company blog. “We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the Web in a few seconds.” Mr. Pichai and Mr. Upson said that the software would be released online later this year under an open source license,...

but if you want to be nice there's a hidden feature: Add &n=1 to the end of the URL to get a less snarky message. Like This: http://lmgtfy.com/...

Well, it means that instead of having to go to the Update page on LiveJournal/WordPress/Blogger/whatever, or loading up a separate client program, all you have to do is hit Ctrl+\, or click the button in your toolbar, and you can start posting.

Today I discovered a new and very different search engine. Spezify is a new search tool which presents its results using beautiful visual boxes from content it discovers based on search engine results and rich media sites like Flickr, YouTube where it scours to get imagery and even finds ways to present textual content in a pretty fashion. If I had to provide a quick description that many of you would understand it would be if Google married SweetCron and this was their spawn.

@andy brudtkuhl -- I don't use ubuntu but I do use Linux and have never found a need for a portable aps suite. Why? Because I use DSL (d*mned small linux) on a very old flash drive. I don't need portable aps if I can boot the computer up into a full blown linux os on a flash drive. I'd imagine that a live CD you've configured just the way you like it would work as well.
