Just finished my revision timetable for the january exams. Now reading over the last practical procedure of the semester (: I must admit that last plant #BS1012 practical was quite interesting, the next one looks like it involves it involves less drawing which im happy about (:
The feeling is very much mutual!! :(( My brain seems to be empty as I no longer am able to recall anything ive learnt. So so nervous!!
- Minelli Torosyan
Its only simple but it helped me again visualise the movement whilst answering question 3a, seeing as at 0:18 seconds into the video it shows the elaters curling up like we saw when we added water to the horsetail elater. It also just aids what Dr Gornall explained about in our lectures (:
- Gracie Okafo
Great! I missed the practical yesterday so I'm glad I can see it now.
- Aneeka Ul-Haq
Glad to help (: Thats a shame though because it was suprisingly interesting when we had a look at horsetail spores under the microscopes.
- Gracie Okafo
Just finished the #BS1012 practical writeup. Will be anxious to see what i get for this, seeing as plants are my weakest area. But on the plus side i did manage to get 90% on the last write up which I'm happy about (:
well done. There were a lot of diagrams to draw for this practical. Don't forget scales, labels and a caption. :)
- Neil Nathwani
Thats a good point! i lost two marks in previous writeup for forgetting a few labels! i will check it over again to make sure. Thanks!! (:
- Gracie Okafo
its always nice to have done the write-up early so that you can concentrate on other subjects. well done. :)
- Nathan Gill
Finished #BS1012 practical after 4 hours gap. It was quite long but demonstrators made it less tiring. In the end I realised that it was really interesting and it reinforces what we have done in lectures perfectly. This fills in the gaps. A big shout out to Mike Borg- he’s really good.
(: Today was funny in the practical, veryyyy interesting though. I like the elaters. Btw im going to you buy you your own special rubber for practicals ok ;)
- Gracie Okafo
but Grace it won't be the same if its not yours lol
- Nathan Gill
Hehe true, the prob is my prob rubber is very quickly wearing out! soon it will be gone! (what a sad day that will be!)
- Gracie Okafo
Is having a complete memory blank.. I blame the lingering cold/flu. Trying to do my #BS1012 write up tonight and can't remember equivilent eye piece units? For the X40 eye piece is each graticule line 2.5 micrometers?
Just finished the #BS1015 dry practical, and found it really useful for next weeks wet session. From what dr willmott explained, it looks like it's going to be a long one! Im definitely going to properly prepare before it!
Me too hopefully, I've learnt from the practicals throughout this semester that preperation is a must as it's easy to be in a position where the tasks are not being done properly and under the time constraints. Good luck!
- Ahmed Syed
Going to stop revising chemistry for a while. And start doing biochemistry , seeing as that pop quiz that was sprung on us in the the #BS1015 dry practical this morning definitely made me realise that i need to do some work for amino acids!
Like? Not really because the standard reading the lecture material and book normally works for meee and maybe some online tests lol.

Spice it up a little! How about writing the names of all the amino acids on post-it notes and writing their properties on the back. If you scatter them around your room and then test yourself by having to move to the answer after you ask yourself a question about the structure, you should be initiating all sorts of pathways in your brain haha.
- Xanthe Simpson-Gray
This video is a tad silly but it briefly covers some of the information about male and female plant terms we heard about today in the #BS1012 lecture. I found it pretty helpful to understand it a bit better. Plus its makes me giggle because he is wearing a cape (:
- Gracie Okafo
Hehe. The best part about it is that the kid looks like fogal from superbad with a cape (:
- Gracie Okafo
from iPhone
Haha, if only they did all our topics!
- Alice Round
I know right! Im going to try and find some more that are similar because i find things like this help me remeber better as phylicia said earlier (:
- Gracie Okafo
Had the 2nd plant lecture for #BS1012. Found the movement of the elaters for the dispersal of the spores really fascinating. Looking forward to phyiscally see that action in our coming practicals. (:
It's good that you understand a bit about this *before* the practical. I didn't really get the hang of elaters until I was writing the report :(
- Michael Steele
Same (: because I struggled with the plant practical write-ups for BS1003. I found some videos on YouTube that reallyyyyyyy helped! (:

mines the 17th, and thats what it says on blackboard and in module booklet.... but its your tutor that marks it so if they say earlier i guess you have to go with that!!
- Alice Round
yeah i think.. ill havve to make it for today! :D thanks
- Jalpan Patel
yeah its the classification thing. just listing the features why your organism is in each of the different taxonomic groups with a picture. should only be about a page of A4 inc the pic maybe a little more. (group 11 ) He said it was to be handed in today (6th dec) to the biology office.
- Christopher morton
I think it depends on your tutorial group so ull have to ask one of them =)
- Khetase Chiwowa
thanks a lot guys for your comments and support... i have handed mine in! so hopefully it will all be good! thanks a lot again...
- Jalpan Patel
I think you mean #BS1012 ? And you might as well get used to dissecting, there'll be more to come!
- Michael Steele
Yes i am sorry mistake :) ... #BS1012 :)) ... Dissecting is interesting but at the begining always it makes you not to want to do it
- Persefoni Ioannou
Hmm peeling the gut was not that interesting or enjoyable :((
- Persefoni Ioannou
Hahaha I guess we're going to have to get used to it! :P

A review posted on a Sepscience E-Journal that descirbes about the importance of synthetic oligonucleotides as potential therapeutic medicines for difficult-to-treat diseases such as cystic fibrosis http://e-learn.sepscience.com/launch...
The article titled 'Synthetic Oligonucleotides - The next big challenge for separation science' was written by my father, George Okafo and two other colleagues of his from GlaxoSmithKlyne. It relates about to what we previously looked at in #BS1015 about RNA, but in this case its explained when looking at for potential therapeutic medicines for a large list of challenging diseases. This article also links well to the RNAinterfernce Nobel Prize 2006 we had to cover previously in tutorial D.
- Gracie Okafo
It seems so long ago since we last had them but it was only last month. We have a lot of different lectures so, you never really get to adjust to any single one.
- Arnold Gangaidzo
Unfortunately trying to remember all the characteristics and species names etc is all getting pretty confusing for #BS1012. This website is pretty simple but it gives a good overlook of what we have covered so far in Dr Mallons lectures and has really helped me get a clearer view over everything we've covered so far.
- Gracie Okafo
Had my #BS1012 presentation today not so confident about it but at least I have done now to wait for the feedback. Hopefully it did not go as bad as I thought and if it did i can learn for next time.
It was very simple and understandable...not too complicated thats why i thought it was a good presentation and the fact that i understood what you were actually talking about
- Mohamed mohamed
Nathan have you recieved your previous practical report yet for the worms and hydra? (:
- Gracie Okafo
I have to say at first I was gutted about not learning about 'real' animals but learning about annelids, Parazoa and so on is actually very interesting as is defining those grey area organisms.
- Benjamin Tanner
Does anyone know when the #BS1012 work on your selected organism needs to be handed in? Is it next week (along with the presentation), or is the week after? Thanks
GOOD! My presentation is next week (Monday). I somehow managed to get "The system of taxonomic nomenclature", now i'm wondering why im putting this work off.
- Matthew Taylor
Ha. My talk is on the 5th (: But mine is on Moleculer markers and biodiversity. I just checked that my essay is definately due in for the 17th, sooooooooooo im guessing yours will be due some time around that.
- Gracie Okafo
Yes, it just has to be in by the end of term for our group Matt. How are you getting on with your presentation? I've been researching and making notes this morning but still need to put in another few hours over the weekend I think... Good luck with yours - taxonomic nomenclature doesn't sound like the most exciting of topics!
- Jay G
It was the Nobel Prize 2006 about the discovery of RNA interference. I found it be a really interesting topic becasue especially its very current too in modern drug development etc (:
- Gracie Okafo
I found that one interesting too when it was presented in our tutorial. Not quite as much as the GFP one though ;)
- Tariq Ismail
Ha. To be honest i think the sound of your Glow in the dark pigs on your presentation, is definately something that would have made my day.
- Gracie Okafo
I replied to the email. I havent been able to meet up any of the times that have been suggested. Is worth that we all meet in the mondays help session?
- Gracie Okafo
You should all be scheduled to have a session at Thu 13:00 till 14:00 that you can make. That would give you the weekend as extra time to work on the report.
