Chicago Apple Store: New store from designers of glass cube, CTA paying big money - iPhone, Therefore, iBlog
"This is the North and Clybourn Apple Stop. This is a Red Line train to Howard. Does that sound weird. Well, it is, but it could happen. According to AppleInsider and chicagobusiness.com, Apple has some pretty big -- and potentially expensive plans -- for the Red Line North and Clybourn stop. The report says that Apple will spend up to $4 million to renovate the station in the popular shopping district in Lincoln Park surrounding North, Clybourn and Halsted streets. And, Apple can, according to the report, name the stop." - Outsanity from Bookmarklet
This is good news. My office is next door and the CTA needs help! - Grant Gochnauer from iPhone

After working almost exclusively with Microsoft products the last 11 months, I take back every mean thing I've ever said about Google.
Ha; sounds like someone has been made to use sharepoint - RAPatton from iPhone
sharepoint is pretty dreadful; it is one of those products like Lotus Notes that is foisted from on high and causes nothing but a loss of productivity - RAPatton
It sounds like 11 months of pure torture. /me ducks ;) - Tyson Key
I'd say schadenfreude if I didn't have to contend with Exchange myself. - Kevin Fox
wait a minute, does exclusively mean IE too? :-O - embee
I can't believe that people consider wikis and sharepoint to be competing products. I've suggested a wiki install at some places, and they install sharepoint instead. The "document sharing" is entirely backward, it's just a glorified shared network drive with a UI that avoids you from having to name things "Document 20090901 Final Backup 2 Andy FINAL Approved". Google docs is much more appropriate for sharing. - Andy Bakun
Sharepoint? God no! - Buyruk Alparslan
I have to use IE about 10% of the time. It's probably the least terrible of the products. - Ginger Makela Riker
Makes me glad that I've been actively, vehemently, resisting Microsoft-ization from day 1 in my current office. With a vengeance :-) - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo
What was wrong with Alfresco and MediaWiki? ;) - Tyson Key
+1 for Alfresco - Mayuresh Walke
Alfresco is great if you have something like: http://pepper.vodori.com on top of it. - Grant Gochnauer
Wow Alfresco looks really cool. I'll have to look into it more closely. - Ginger Makela Riker
Pepper looks super interesting too. - Ginger Makela Riker

iTunes sucks in general - Grant Gochnauer
I have not seen crashes yet, but it is ugly slow. iTunes 8 was way faster. - andrei_c
I've had trouble browseing the store. Always locks up and crashes. Was the same with 8.1 in the beginning tho. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone

Sorry... Just saying - Zach Cheatham
Windows 7 is a much bigger upgrade than Snow Leopard I think. SL's real value won't be realized until developers take advantage of new APIs - Grant Gochnauer

I get more IM spam on Yahoo Messenger than I get legitimate conversations. Tempted to drop the account entirely.
Why do you use it at all? I'm surprised you're not 100% MSN. - Rochelle
I have 2 (two) contacts on it with nothing else. In the era of multi-protocol clients I'm always idling on MSN, AIM, gTalk, Yahoo, ICQ, and Facebook chat. It's gotten to the point where I get a spam from Yahoo almost daily and I'm tempted to just tell those last 2 (two) people they need to get another network or email me if they want to continue to converse with me on the Internet. - Sparky
Do it. Akiva was down to 2 (two) people on AIM and successfully got both of them on GTalk. No more AIM. - Rochelle
THAT DOES IT. I'm going to send my last 2 (two) IMs to my last 2 (two) contacts, and forever log off from Yahoo! Messenger (Yahoo! Messenger). - Sparky
Except that 1 (one) of them is offline. I guess he gets an email then. *signs off* - Sparky
AIM and Google Talk are all that is necessary, and both allow iChat video chats, FTW. - Andru Edwards
Andru: most of my contacts are on MSN. BeejiveIM btw, is what makes this whole beautiful life possible. - Sparky
And ewww - iChat? Seriously? Use Adium. iChat is all dumbed down and bloated with extraneous pixels. - Sparky
does anyone else use inline images with AIM/mobileMe - after using that I can't go back to ordinary chat protocols - Franz Sittampalam
When someone sends me an inline image or pokes me or whatever IM I want to punch them in the face. It's distracting - IM is just that: messages. I don't want to use an IM program to manage media or anything other that plain text and occasional file exchange. - Sparky
oh I haven't had that problem since only one of my contacts (my gf) has inline imaging and we love being able to send eachother screencaps of what we're looking at. I wouldn't like people randomly sending me pictures either now you mention it...... - Franz Sittampalam from IM
Can't MSN and Yahoo accounts cross-chat? - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕ from iPhone
Why not just share your screen directly? It seems like a lot of extra steps to take a screenshot, copy it, paste it into an IM window, and then explain it - Sparky
much easier than that for me, I configured a cross-hair snap shortcut in osx (control+option+x for example), click-drag copies the selected area to clipboard, paste to im and press enter. In order to screenshare I'd need to use ichat or skype or something but Iprefer adium and I often only want to show a fraction of the page - Franz Sittampalam
I get the most SPAM on my Skype account for reason which is my least advertised account. Very weird. - Grant Gochnauer
I get the occasional IM spam on MSN, but that's usually one of my less technical friends getting pwnd and sending invisible messages on login. The Yahoo stuff is all from random generated accounts like SomeName27SomeOtherName - Sparky
Same with MSN. I stopped signing into both - Rodfather

Gripe of the moment: Google Reader does not scroll smoothly in Firefox on the Mac. You would think Google cares about that market.
More annoying: Firefox on Windows does a great job of scrolling smoothly on Google Reader. - Sparky
I've found FF on my mac MUCH less stable than on Windows. Furthermore, I feel like Snow Leopard has slowed down my FF browsing -- especially with scrolling. - Grant Gochnauer
I have no stability programs - I can't think of the last time any browser crashed on me (other than IE). Scrolling speed is crap for FF/Mac though. - Sparky

in the latest EAP build of IntelliJ, I removed a very old and rarely used feature. I wonder if anyone noticed :)
Commander? (didn't looked yet) - Dmitry Kashin
hmmm... - Grant Gochnauer
nope. since we've demoted commander to a plugin, we don't have any intentions of dropping it - anyone can just turn it off - yole
Give us a hint :) - Grant Gochnauer
take a good look at the main menu :) - yole
Migration Tools? - aefimov
I think Migrate is worth dropping indeed, but for now it's still alive :) - yole

Apple says the Google voice app appears to alter the iPhone's user experience by replacing its core mobile phone functionality.
"In addition, the iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways." lol - Jérôme Flipo
That's their best excuse? - Shevonne
LOL - MikeAmundsen
cop out!.... give me a f-cking break Apple. - Grant Gochnauer
Alters the users experience in a way that both benefits our competitor and gives current users unlimited text messaging for free. - Geoff Schultz
"Google is of course free to provide Google Voice on the iPhone as a web application through Apple’s Safari browser, just as they do for desktop PCs, or to provide its “Google-branded” user experience on other phones, including Android-based phones, and let consumers make their choices." Ahah! - Jérôme Flipo
I smell monopoly - Craig Eddy
so Google Voice alters the iPhone user experience by replacing its core functionality? Then in that case, Firefox should be removed from Macs, since it alters the Mac user experience by replacing its core functionality. See how stupid that sounds, Apple? - Kevin Nunez

Pie Hole: Boystown's Siren Call to Pizza Eaters Across Chicago - http://slice.seriouseats.com/archive...
Pie Hole: Boystown's Siren Call to Pizza Eaters Across Chicago
Show all
"Every night, when gay men and the women who love them pour out of the bars that blanket the four block stretch of Halsted between Belmont and Addison, one of their go-to places for late-night eats is Pie Hole Pizza Joint. So many, in fact, that the place does a majority of its business after midnight even though it offers a limited menu at that time. Pie Hole is probably better known for some of its marketing than its pizza. And with slogans like "I want a large sausage" and "the best 10 inches at 2 a.m."—as well as a drag queen who delivers pizzas on Tuesdays (a promotion currently on hiatus)—the marketing is certainly entertaining. But to dismiss Pie Hole as a gimmick place that is really only there for the post-bar crowd would be a mistake: Owner Doug Brandt and his team put out some seriously good pizza." - Derrick from Bookmarklet
Pie Hole offers 11 signature pizzas along with a long list of toppings, sauces and cheeses for those looking to build their own. I opted for a specialty pie, the Easy Caprese, which features Grande mozzarella ciliegine, fresh Roma tomatoes, minced garlic, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh basil. The fresh mozzarella was piled on and the sweet ripe tomatoes balanced perfectly with... more... - Derrick
The equivalent in Columbus would be Slammers, but it caters to mostly Lesbians. Good pizza, I used to have lunch their when I worked downtown in the late 90s. There may be a better analog, I am just not aware of though. Columbus is very gay city and is often cited as one of the best places for GLBT people to live: http://gaytravel.about.com/b... - RAPatton
"they do something to the pizza before putting it in the oven" o_O That said, I'll have to try it next time I'm in that neighborhood. - LogEx
Lindsey, can I pick you up? Do you think we could get Logical and David Cook to meet us there? - Derrick
nom nom pizza! - Anna Lynn M.
I live 2 blocks away. 3 min walk. All the bars I go to are right there. Good pizza but overpriced - Grant Gochnauer from iPhone

Wow, just wow. I just found the real reason Tyler has been cagey about introducing me to his parents while they are in town this weekend: he's not out to them. I'm actually kind of stunned - there are actually people in their 30's and still not out to their parents :(
Honey, I know some people in their thirties who aren't out to *themselves*. :( - Derrick
Now that I've had a day to process I don't think it's quite as weird. I know I'm in the minority, but I've been out to my parents since I figured out I was gay at age 13, and although they had some processing of their own to do they were always my parents, always loved me, and have always been supportive in their own way. I had a lot of friends deal with coming out drama, but that was all back when we were still living with our parents. Strange to be interacting with someone going through it now. - Sparky
I didn't know I was gay myself until I was 21 or so, but I came out to my parents within a few months of figuring it out myself. I have nothing but sympathy for those who don't have the type of relationship with their parents where they can just come out with it. Tyler seems like an OK guy, what was he waiting for? - veo
I came out to my parents when I was 26... and my BF, Gabe, came out when he was 21 to his mom and 23 to his dad. I definitely see a trend though where people are coming out younger and younger which I think is good. I think it also depends where you live -- in HS I lived in a very conservative area (Orange County, CA) and at the time I was perfectly happy being in the closet. Partly... more... - Grant Gochnauer

Why can't Twitter automatically convert the shortened URLs to the actual URLs? - Dale Feinstein

Windows 7 RTM installed. Holy crap is it slick, lush, and beautiful.
Isn't it? I haven't been this excited and fanboy crazy for an OS since Windows 95! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Yep. Best consumer OS that Microsoft has ever released. - Akiva Moskovitz
Did you try the Beta or RC before the RTM? - CAJ, somewhere else
Curtis, yep. Ran the beta and the RC both on a variety of different machines. It was a winner from the beginning. - Akiva Moskovitz
Any software compatibility issues so far? - The Letter M
Nothing significant, no. Couldn't install Dialbo II but that was a problem even on Vista. - Akiva Moskovitz
I really like it...I've been using it since Jan - jamar78
I'll put the RTM on my desktop, finally. I've been going back and forth between my laptop with the RC and XP. XP seems so...old. - CAJ, somewhere else
Yeah, I could never go back to XP. Basically, anyone who had a problem with Vista will find those problems gone in Windows 7. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Curtis I know! I can't even look at that sad blue taskbar anymore. Nor could I ever go back after having the preview windows/transparency. It saves me so much time and alt-tabbing. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Win7 is very cool. Fast! Can we install the RTM now then? - Kol Tregaskes
@kol: It is available through some channels (partners, msdn etc). It will be generally available Oct. 22 - Jemm
I have been trying to work out if I upgrade my existing Vista Pro install or start from scratch. So far I have a very long pros vs cons list including the applications I would need to reinstall... at the moment the upgrade is winning, purely because of Adobe CS. But then I am using it less and less now, so that adds to the pros side ;) - Travis Koger
LOVE LOVE LOVE Windows 7. I'm running RTM on all my machines now and even using this instead of OSX on my macbook :) - Grant Gochnauer
I like Windows 7, too, but there's no way I'd use it more than OS X! - Akiva Moskovitz
I still hate the UI, but other than that, it is on par with when we got XP... stable, lean and feature rich. - Tim Hoeck
Tim, yeah, the Vista/Windows 7 UI seems to be about as love-it-or-hate-it as the Office Ribbon. I happen to really like them both and feel that MS's modern UIs are the best they've ever done. But I know it's definitely not for everyone. - Akiva Moskovitz
Networking still confuses me a bit though... guess I'll have to get used to the HomeGroup stuff. (I am on the hate side of the Office ribbon) :) - Tim Hoeck
I ignore the whole Homegroup thing and just do sharing the traditional way. - Akiva Moskovitz
I love the homegroup feature and use it a lot. I also love how I can select any folder and use the share with drop down to share with homegroup users. - Grant Gochnauer from iPhone
Dont get me wrong: Homegroup's a great feature and will be wonderful for many people. I have a mixed OS network, though, so it's not as useful for me. - Akiva Moskovitz from BuddyFeed
