Wow, so many "thoughtful" comments. Um, NOT. Anyway, here's my question to this class: What's the next step in terms of creating a community around the local sports team? Take the Washington Nationals for example. How do you tackle that marketing problem?
- Emilie Cole
Hello Hello! Hey no talking, thats right you in the back.
- Manuel Arroyo
I am sure many of the you would be amazed to see these many updates in real time. This is Scobleizer effect :)
- Saurabh Sahni
Getting your MBA is like getting handed the keys to the car and not knowing how to drive. In a field like sports marketing where there is little precedent to be studied, you will do most of your learning out in the work place. Good luck, and if all else fails, just talk about Brett Favre some more.
- Will Thompson
All the very best for your future endeavours! Get into some serious entrepreneurship & kick some a$$ :)

How many of you are on Friendfeed, Twitter, and that facebook thingy?
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
I'm a UCLA alum, back from the days when we rode a horse/buggy to get to games at Pauley Pavilion. My claim to fame: Jogged around the track with John Wooden.
- Irene Koehler
Hi class! Take good notes and listen to Alex.

Please remember me when you get bored doing all that hard work out on the golf courses and feel free to fill the void by sending me event tickets in the Midwest, kthxbye.

Hi Students. Does it bother you that Robert Scoble has once again completely neglected his wife and kids to be with you today?
- jasonte3a
Thank you, this was really great. I think we got a few people to join us on FriendFeed, cool students, too.
- Robert Scoble
jasonte3a: I am blocking you, but before I do, you should know that my son is with me here in Los Angeles and listened to the presentation today.
- Robert Scoble
This was pretty cool! What was the general reaction of the class to FriendFeed?
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
OK, I now know not to follow Vinny or Peter;) Greetings Irene & Grant, go Bruins! Friendfeed rocks!
- Rick Bucich
Mine still has not shipped yet.. Ordered on the day it was announced from apple.com :(
- Dominick D'Aniello
I got the same f-ing thing! It went from China to Hong Kong to Anchorage (which is only 200 miles from me), then went all the way to Louisville, KY where it's being HELD! Now it has to come ALL THE WAY BACK to Anchorage!!!
- Michael Halstead
It's happening to eveyone Leo. I was suppose to get mine today. I called UPS and they are indicating that it is a hold for US customs and that it is scheduled for delivery by noon on the 18th. (tomorrow)
- Robb McMahan
Crazy and most still waiting just for the 3.0 Update lol
- Aaron Jones
Wonder if they would give it to you, if you showed up at the depot and asked for it?
- Darren Mak
This has been happening all day, seems they don't want the street date being broken.
- Oli from the-iBlog
I don't get it. It says the receiver requested the hold and not the shipping agent
- Darrell Bell
@Matt Griffin --Stupid it as stupid does. I think Apple does stupid a lot these days!
- Michael Halstead
The same thing happened when I was waiting for my Leopard disk. Fedex held all the packages until the Apple shipdate. I remember the frustration.
- Dave Winer
At least the update is coming today for my iPod Touch! Hang in there Leo! It's funny how they blame LEO for the hold...
- Tony
What's the carbon footprint of these iPhones getting rerouted to Kentucky?
- Tom McCoy
This is just comical to me. Shame on you UPS for doing your job so well.
- Jeff Vreeland
I'm a developer and got the 3.0 GM last week. There's not a whole lot of new stuff you can use right now. Actually the only useful things available right now is copy and paste and find my iphone (and thats only if you have mobile me). Other than that it's not even a really big deal.
- Robb McMahan
Looks like the UK gets 3Gs before the US... YAY
- Tim Evans
Serves you right for broadcasting that you were due to get it early
- Alec Brown
@Tom, Louisville is where customs is for UPS. You would think Alaska, but it's Louisville.
- Robb McMahan
Didn't UPS use to have a estimated delivery date listed? Where did that go?
- Ryan Cates
Seriously, how can it hurt if a few people get it early? Is there really a good reason? Maybe Apple needs to have the iTunes server set up for it or something?
- Jeff Anderson
Everyone is experiencing the hold. This is the kind of details Apple goes to to ensure they control the experience for all. It reminds me of one evening during 2001 WWDC when Apple ordered Domino's pizza for everyone for dinner.
- Vinko
I bet the delivery driver has a pre lol
- davehollis
so if you puts your money down Apple can just stop it?sorry I'm naive.
- gerald miller
Apple website states Apple iPhone 3Gs Available June 19.
- Michael Munnis
Robb, I too had been using 3.0 since last week and I wrote a post to help people decide whether to upgrade to iPhone 3G S or not. http://tr.im/oDB5
- Vinko
that's pretty frustrating, At least you already have an iPhone, it's not like you are going to a whole new device, where you would be super excited.
- Calum
Isn't that amazing! You, the receiver, asked to hold the shipment! Sounds like there is a UPS issue.
- Sean Higgins
It looks like Apple doesn't want Leo to get his iphone until the official release Friday.
- Garmon Estes
I was sad to see this when i woke up this morning :( I'm still on the 1st gen iPhone.
- Erik
Denied! This happened with Leopard when they shipped it - some people were getting it early and Apple tried to stop UPS by putting a 'do not deliver before' date on them. Nice try though. At least we get 3.0 before Friday.
- Mike
I ordered mine from AT&T last Tuesday. They claim that it will ship overnight on the 18th, so I'll have it on the 19th. My order status still shows "not shipped" which is consistent.
- Joey Gibson
@MuscleNerd of iPhone_dev said this: "Those of you tracking your new iPhone 3GS and see "receiver requested a hold" -- don't worry, UPS says it's just a U.S. Customs thing"
- Brian
I'm pretty sure Apple's shipping rate is based on delivery on a certain day, regardless of when the items get to the hub. It allows the UPSs of the world to plan their resources. And all overnight shippers are based on the hub and spoke system, so it can sometimes feel like they are going out of their way. "Why didn't they stop at my house? They had to fly right over it!" Besides, doesn't Apple deserve to have an actual product launch day? When the phones actually ... launch - not dribble in for a few days?
- Ed Hunter
Wonder if someone intercepted the package first? (as in stolen)
- James Hague
Leo it´s Apple, they heard you had bought one of their products and as usual decided to lower the price. But they couldn't do it fast enough so they needed the hold. LOL sorry couldn't resist.
- Ignacio Rodriguez de R,
Appleinsider says that Apple is holding up the phones until it is officially released in stores on Friday.
- gerald miller
Please do not adjust your sets... we are in control of the horizontal and vertical.. your friends at Apple Computers....
- Greg
Yes I think everyone is having the iPhone 3Gs put on hold and will be delivered Friday.
- Michael King
Yup, I have the same thing. THIS close! Ugh. One can hope that the clerical errors that always seem to happen will happen in someone's favor and they will get it early.
- Aaron T. Harvey
wow! leo is tracking his new iphone. NOT SUPRISING AT ALL
- Jonah W. Kemp
Apple is acting very weird based on years of past behavior. In past this type of shipment would arrive early and the Iphone update would have been released late yesterday (stayed up an extra hour to caught the update on the east coast). - new guys running the ship.
- Ed Boutros
I have had this same problem and I am disappointed too, but the real mistake was not that the phone will show up on the 19th, it's that UPS was showing it would arrive earlier. Apple's website claimed it would deliver on the 19th but UPS had scheduled deliveries for the 17th and 18. This one is on UPS in my opinion. As long as the phones arrive on the 19th, Apple has kept their promise and done their job
- Grant
What's frustrating is that the date of delivery is unknown. The phones could still be delivered on June 18 and people could receive the phones on Friday. However, it would be frustrating to receive the phones after Friday.
- Henry
It's get there. Patience shall be rewarded, oh and Wow. Have I truly become a Cross Platform Social Network User? Damn You, Laporte!
- Bill Heald
I would buy the $99.00 with the 3.0 installed!
- earl wallace
Those cell phone companies will have a lot of explaining to do Tuesday when they testify at a U.S. Senate committee hearing on rising text messaging costs. Representatives from Verizon, AT&T, and Cricket will be faced with questions on why those short 160 character SMS messages are costing the consumer too much.
- Leo Laporte
Leo, I believe it was you who reported that based on AT&T's text messaging fee SMS messages cost consumers somewhere around $1500 per MB of data?
- jcunwired
The painful pricing structure of these companies is why I don't really use my cell phone for anything more than the occasional call. I'm not prepared to risk the assorted extra charges that come with SMS, or web use.
- Eoghann Irving
any guesses on what they say will be the reason for these prices ?
- Kashif Khan
http://mobilejones.com/2007... My article on SMS charging hit the front page of digg in 2007. The high cost of SMS has been a known in the mobile industry for a long time. I remember being shocked that many of my web friends hadn't thought of the costs per MB,
- Debi Jones
Not only do they charge absurd prices, but most don't even include texting in the unlimited data plans. I pay 30 dollars a month for iPhone data and pay 15 more on top of that for 1500 texts. THat is outrageous.
- Grant
Interesting that they are questioning Cricket at the same time as the larger carriers. We have Cricket here and they offer unlimited calling including unlimited text messaging for only $40/month. Maybe they want to know why Cricket can offer reasonable pricing while the larger, national carriers continue to gouge their customers.
- Joshua Blevins
They should also be grilled about the cost of data plans.
- Kashif Khan
I don't use text messaging, so I don't have it on my iPhone. That saves me $20 every month. A small victory!
- Paul Ring
I don't have texting either, but got stuck paying 60 cents for two porn spam messages!
- Sandy Curry
I could be wrong, but I thought the reason SMS was so expensive was because they want to discourage people from using it, since texts can saturate the network. You can't really compare it to email, because SMS works like a phone call and doesn't use the data connection.
- Daniel Sims
SMS does use the control channel, but that's it. It doesn't really saturate the network since it doesn't create a connection like an actual phone call. It's a 1-way message and it's not a guaranteed receipt either. Oh, and those that actually look at the cost per MB are incorrect since it's that channel itself isn't used in the same fashion as data connections. SMS uses control channel...
- Ben Hwang
You have to pay to receive SMS? Which Dodo brain though of that one? There would be a revolt in Europe if they tried that!
- David Wright
from twhirl
New Zealand has two networks, one gives 500/1000 texts 'free' for $10. the other gives free weekends if you spend a certain amount during the week.
- Robbie Steele
actually there are that kind of things in Europe. Some service providers (ringtones for example) may charge your phone bill by sending SMS. You can for exmple have a monthly subscription for ringtones and they are charging you by sending two SMSes. This is ofcourse problematic, as the consumer can not easily deny from paying and in a case of dispute the operator stands in between.
- Jani Kenttälä
from IM
True, but those are subscription services, not "normal" SMS messages.
- David Wright
from twhirl
@Ben: If the SMS uses the control channel, which is in use and always active anyway, why should there even be a charge for SMS? The network infrastructure is already there, so really the extra data does not make an impact.
- Nils Sandin
On an additional point, as mentioned above, regular incoming SMS are not charged in Europe (unless roaming abroad), and outbound SMS can cost as little as 0.09€ (13 cents) on a pre-paid plan (w/o commitment for 500 or 1000 messages you might never use).
- Nils Sandin
It's called Capitalism. No government intervention necessary. If the consumer doesn't like it, they should stop paying for it. In other words, move to a company that doesn't charge so much or stop using the service. The market will then be forced to change.
- Chad McCoskey
Chad, because of that system we also have the most primitive cell phone networks and system in the 1st world. Unfettered capitalism isn't always what's best.
- Tad
from fftogo
I think that's part of the problem -- they've all raised their prices at once, so there's no alternative provider. I used to have a sensible option in the US which didn't charge me for incoming messages, but that's been long gone.
- John Flinchbaugh
from IM
I mentioned the Pre but I think I got away with it!
- Kevin J Hatton
Tad, so what? We forget that cell service and a whole host of other things we take for granted now are luxuries not necessities. I love my iPhone but if I felt the prices weren't acceptable or if another option was better either a phone or pricing plan, I'd go there. My point is that it's all well and good to complain, but protest with what companies value most: your money.
- Chad McCoskey
Jerome, you're right about the necessities which is exactly my point. We don't all "deserve" high quality cell service for free and in the case of a non necessity, if all companies offering that product charge the same amount then maybe the populace should decide if they should really spend their money on it. If you don't like the cost of text messages then don't use the service and if the majority of people does that companies will either stop the service or lower prices.
- Chad McCoskey
I have an iPhone with no text plan because they are obscenely priced. I'm not happy about $25/mo for unlimited data but I'm doing my best to get my money's worth. I'll just call or send an email rather than pay $.50 for a text
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
Daniel, thank you for proving my point. More people should follow suit if they don't like the cost. By the way, I have text on my phone and make sure I don't go over my limit.
- Chad McCoskey
Oh, weren't you bitching about FF stupid posts not making you smarter last week? Well, here ya go. No more bitching. We get to talk about bacon again.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
well we know what tomorrow's caption contest will be on Valleywag :-)
- Duncan Riley
There have been too many pics of his naked chest this week.

Yeah, I don't care how many people take pictures of themselves in the shower, I'm not gonna join in that memefest. No thank you. Besides you've already seen my brother in the shower...Remove some weight, adjust the nose a bit and you've got me too...ugh...that's just so wrong.
- Alex Scoble
Tina: I hope they don't do a shower meme. I'm not going to take a picture of myself in the shower, no matter how drunk you get me. *lol*
- Molly, New Ears :P
Is this your entry for the bitch face meme? It's a very disappointingly happy bitch face.
- Pete Delucchi
With all that flyin' around, Twittering, and Friendfeeding, he's gotta need 3 or 4 showers a day. The question is ..... Which soap is he plugging ? :)
- Charlie Anzman
I hope it's lever 2000 messing with Valleywag :)
- Anthony Farrior
I stayed in the Extended Stay America in Beaverton for a couple of weeks in 2001...then I got an apartment in Portland.
- Bren -- Designated Driver
I live here too! Tons of geeks, and the tech scene in the Portland area is amazing. I love it! :-) I run into Ward occasionally, but I've still never met Alex. Make sure he comes to Ignite Portland 4 in November! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
Hmmm, seems like I need to move to Beaverton, Oregon myself ;-)
- Bora Zivkovic
I live in Hillsboro, which butts up against Beaverton. Hillsboro is better. Ha! ;) Brad Fitzpatrick who created LiveJournal did so from Hillsboro. I believe his parents still live here.
- Dawn
Yeah, I work in Hillsboro and so does my fiance (she teaches 3rd grade for the Hillsboro public school system). Hillsboro and Beaverton both seem about the same to me. Still haven't found a good Italian place in either town though. However, not very interested in driving into Portland to find one. :)
- Alex Scoble
Have you tried that Italian restaurant at Orenco? I don't remember the name of it and haven't been there in a couple of years, but it used to be pretty good. I prefer Hillsboro because it's more compact and the city cares more about parks and roads, including the landscaping of roads. Hillsboro is prettier, IMO. Of course, more than half of it is less than ten years old, so most of it is very new and still looks fresh.
- Dawn
Depends on which part of Hillsboro, downtown isn't very pretty. I live near Aloha so there's lots of trees in my neighborhood. In fact that's pretty much all I see out my backyard. I'll have to give that place a try. I think I know which one it is. It's across the way from Swagath, right?
- Alex Scoble
Yep, across from Swagath, which used to be another Indian place that was actually a lot better, IMO. Have you seen downtown lately? They redid the theater there and added a coffee bar/bistro. It's very nice. The city is stepping up efforts to revitalize downtown. I'm hoping to put my business there, where the WellsFargo used to be. It's a block from the MAX train, so employess could come in from all over.
- Dawn
I haven't seen that part of downtown, apparently. But I have seen some efforts to revitalize it. We are getting married at the Hillsboro Cultural Arts Center on 12/09. They did a nice job of renovating that building. And they are tearing down some of the schools and have build 3 new ones in the area. My fiance worked at Peter Boscow Elementary last year but is moving to McKinney this year as PB was closed at end of last term.
- Alex Scoble
Yep, the Cultural Arts Center is very nice. Congrats to you and your fiance on your coming marriage and her new job. I hope she enjoys the new school!
- Dawn
Apologies to the Hillsboro/Beaverton fans, but if you're going to live in the area, do yourself a favor and live in Portland! :)
- Patrick Lightbody
That's great, but then you have to deal with higher crime, more traffic, higher taxes. You can have it.
- Alex Scoble
If it weren't for Voodoo Donuts and Kell's I'd have scant reason to go there. :)
- Alex Scoble
Beaverton, OR is nice. My wife and I are glad we settled here. It's a nice change from the cookie-cutter neighborhood we left in Chandler AZ.
- Kevin Johnson
from twhirl
@dwan - do you mean the Merchant of Venice at Orenco? I had the worst possible meal there - it used to be pretty good in its early days from what I hear, but right now, I tell people to stay very far away from it
- Frederic
Small world but I wouldn't want to paint it - Steven Wright
- Dave Martin
Nonna Emilia's near 170th an TV Hwy isn't bad for italian. nothing special, but pretty inexpensive, and MASSIVE portions. But you're right. I can't think of a really good Italian place in the area.
- Josh Bancroft
Yeah, I have two criteria for what makes a good Italian place. Good gnocchi in gorgonzola creme sauce is 1. Good bruschetta (pronounced bruh-skeh-tuh for the unitiated...NOT bruh-sheh-tuh..."ch" is similar to "k" sound in Italian...you wouldn't pronounce chianti as shee-ahn-tee) is the other.
- Alex Scoble
Some chichi places do bruschetta as half pieces of cherry tomatoes on crusty bread. Nothing as annoying as paying $8 for bruschetta like that...It has no flavor. Best way to do bruschetta is to chop up tomato and lots of basil together. Put oil and garlic rubbed onto toasted pieces of baguette (sourdough for extra flavor) and add a nice mound of the tomato and basil mixture.
- Alex Scoble
if you want good Italian, you pretty much have to go downtown - Nonna Emilia is ok, but indeed nothing special (even though it tends to be packed). In Portland itself, we really like Iorio (http://www.ioriorestaurant.com/) and Fratelli (http://www.fratellicucina.com/) has some good stuff on the menu as well.
- Frederic
Thanks for the suggestions, Frederic.
- Alex Scoble
only late at night if I'm bored and it's quiet, which it usually is after the West Coast goes to bed
- Duncan Riley
only occasionally do I click the 'everyone' tab on FF. I find I tend to do this more in the early days after I've joined a new-ish service. I recall doing this with Plurk and identi.ca in particular, to see what the general topics of conversation are etc
- Matt Hooper
Yes, as Matt said I tend to do this when I'm new and don't know too many people. It's like "mingling" at a party.
- Cindy Bartorillo
always. i discovered the web usage habits of people from another side of the world.
- Jansen Lu
Sometimes. It's like being in the passenger seat while the car is doing 100 mph and you've got your head stuck out of the window . Exhilarating for a few moments before you get dizzy and want it to stop.

So many nuggets of knowledge built into Tha Carter III, Leo. This is one of many, my friend.

I was using a business calling card to call Roz's Iridium satellite phone. I had no idea it would cost $13.80 per minute until I got the first bill. Of course by then I had racked up over $10,000 in calls. It costs Roz only $1/minute to call me from the sat phone, so that's how we're doing it now. I should have, of course, checked the tariff. I even remember reading some time ago that calling card calls are the most expensive out there. Fortunately, AT&T knocked it down to the lowest rate available.
- Leo Laporte
wonder if iridium phones are used by anyone except "extreme" sports people who climb everest or row across the ocean?
- Wilma Stoneflint
shocked to hear AT&T actually do good... they never part with $$$ ...interesting. Very happy for you Leo, cuz that was one nasty phone bill!! Did you drop out of your chair when you read it?!
- Susan Beebe
Happy for you Leo. The first time I have heard something positive about AT&T. I experience with AT&T was very different though.
- Vic Podcaster
Grant: i put it on approval only and i'm getting 300-400 folks asking to be on after each email. so, i guess the 1,000 limit is over. hard to say no to folks
- Jason Calacanis
I haven't had to restore but I've definitely had problems with installs not completing when downloading on the phone. I've also had updates to installed apps fail.
- invariant - farewell FF
Installing from iTunes seems like the obvious choice I guess.
- Bob Blunk
It is definitely smoother to install from iTunes here.
- Warner Crocker
had the same problem with some of my iPhone apps - I'm with you. Sticking to downloading on iTunes for now.
- Aaron Strout
I've never had a single problem installing or updating an application directly onto my iPhone (knocking on wood!)
- Michael Connick
You're right, Shel: would be nice to see her back.
- Chris Baskind
I am not really a teche, but if Scoble would get rid of his shinny thing and show his human side more, he would really be good for the tech industry!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Alexander van Elsas - but this is really such a hard pick to make
- Steven Hodson
Robert Scoble. He's the one who brought me to FriendFeed.
- Mitchell Tsai
With no disrespect to any of the above. None of the above listed so far are pure tech bloggers other then Jon udell and Nikki . All those mention talk about technology but are not into hard core programming and therefore are not techies per sec !!
- Peter Dawson
The term is pretty broad these days.
- Chris Baskind
"Liveblogging scope definitions: OH NO HE DI'NT" "Top 10 reasons you need to use FORTRAN" "Is LVM killing GCC?"
- Mark Trapp
Dave Winer. He is always challenging and not afraid to speak his mind. He is thought provoking, and has contributed to all our tech experiences. I just wish he would dial back a little on the politics. At least we know where he stands.
- Henry Burger
@Bjorn, I understand what you are saying. But the question on hand is one tech blogger. So who are these tech bloggers listed above -I mean as an engineer how many of these bloggers really talk hardcore technology ? Secondly, what do they really know about how it works and the bit/byte , constructor level of ..lets say a c++ complier. What they talk about is the UI, the ways it could be used etc. They are product reviwers not tech bloggers. I'll add Dave W to tech Blogger status !! :)-
- Peter Dawson
@Chris, thats the problem with terms being loosely or broadly used !! If I were to ask any1 of them to explain precisely what this snip means <ssh $USR@$host w > $OUT> and what is supposed to happen, they will certainly flunk the test. there is big difference between tech bloggers and product reviewers !!
- Peter Dawson
Andy Ihnatko - http://www.cwob.com: Absolutely the funniest tech columnist who doesn't write a "comedy column". His appearances on Mac Break Weekly are always the best and his aforementioned blog is wonderful.
- Canyon R
Louis Gray and any "guest star" he has...
- Vince DeGeorge
ugh, just one? Alexander Van Elsas or Corvida. Not sure which though.
- Rob Diana
haha, I just realized that I was logged into mrsth's account when I said scobleizer before. I guess that makes two of us!
- Thomas Hawk
Jacqui Cheng, Julian Sanchez, Jon Stokes, and generally anyone else we employ at Ars Technica ;)
- Clint Ecker
Tim O'Reilly - lots of others are right up there with him though
- Jesse Stay
Wow, I am honored. I don't have one favorite. I used to like Winer the most but he has been writing about politics lately so don't see him as a tech blogger. Love Hawk too. Or is that "two?" heh. I have a bunch of favorites, though, I am with Tamar: it is too difficult to pick one name. Or even five. According to FriendFeed my favorite is TechCrunch and Louis Gray.
- Robert Scoble
that's hard. If you make me me pick I'll go with Umair Haque.
- Kevin Gamble
Scoble gets a lot of points for participation and conversation and sheer superhuman energy, but I can't say he's actually my favorite *blogger*. I need to think about this a little bit.
- Michael Hocter
Andrew Chen / Futuristic Play is simply awesome. Paul Graham / Marc Andreesen / Josh Kopelman / Fred Wilson, when they write are also favorites.
- dave mcclure
A tip for FriendFeed: Only put up one microblogging site on your feed. Everything you post is showing up twice, one from Pownce, one from Twitter.

Because we're named after a pigment that would be a pretty hard mascot to create, so the tree comes from the great redwood that's on the official school seal... and the tree's not ghetto...not at what tuition on The Farm runs these days. decidedly upscale. lol
- .LAG liked that
Dude, I'm sorry. But your mascot is all sortsa ugly. Seriously. And for a school filled with smart people, why in the Sam's hill would they choose a pigment for a mascot? Baffling!
- Mona Nomura
Ya, it looks like Cpt. Crunch.... =|
- Mona Nomura
but see, that's what people don't understand about the Stanford mascot, the Stanford Cheerleaders, and the Stanford Band: take whatever idea you have of a mascot, a cheerleader, or a marching band... and we're the exact opposite. our mascot is the anti-mascot... and judging from your reaction, it's working. the joke's on you for taking it seriously, because we sure don't.
- .LAG liked that
.LAG, I didn't mean to offend you... I was just teasing :\
- Mona Nomura
Mona ... no offense taken... should have added LOL at the end... seriously, we made as much fun of the mascot and the band when we were students as anyone outside the school ever did, probably more, because we know who's behind the suit. that's why its so funny to me to hear folks rip our mascot... that's why it exists: to get ripped! Is it ugly? Absolutely. Is it silly? Definitely? Is it lame? Without a doubt, by design! Seriously LOL
- .LAG liked that
phew.. sometimes you can't tell on the internet haha I have friends who went to Stanford and I make fun of them all the time, hey. At least you don't have an unofficial one like Dartmouth. When I saw Keggy the Keg I LOL'd.
- Mona Nomura
I like the Slug. The tree has gotta go, though.
- Bill Sodeman
Each Stanford mascot designs his/her own tree costume and also has to perform a stunt. A previous winner ate the heads off of 2 live snakes. There was an interesting article on SI about the selection process
- Grant
If those outfits are avail, I'd like to wear them at Burning Man.

the banana slug will fucking maul everyone

Have you tried holding down both the home button and the power (top) button? That'll soft-reset it. Sometimes that'll clear it up. If it doesn't, check the Apple discussion boards or visit your local Apple store. :\ Good luck!!
- thepete
That's how it got stuck. The iPod was stuttering nothing would respond so I tried the soft reset and now it won't go past the Apple logo

Google Knol doesn't come close to being a killer app. I predict it will be a total bust. Has no useful wiki features.
- Roger Jennings
Jason it's not a killer - it's too strick!
- Anne Haynes
Ironically, Knol's search feature doesn't work. Try searching for Obama. This Knol has substantial Obama content: http://tinyurl.com/59oj4d

Somebody actually said Mahalo would kill google?
- loren feldman
I think a lot of good comments have been made here and that (much to the surprise of some) Mahalo has proved that there is a space for human powered search and has continued to corner that market. I think that it will be interesting to see how all the pieces come to together but I don't see Knol invading Mahalo's space or stealing it's eyeballs. Just my 2-cents.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
is it even possible to kill something that large? That would be like trying to put out the sun with a water pistol...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
Wait wait, who said Mahalo would kill Google?
- Andru Edwards
Why would anyone make either wild prediction. Let's see what the market says. I say: the target audiences are different.
- Joe
from twhirl
I don't think Knol will kill Mahalo... I think it will likely kill Squidoo.
- Clay Newton
I don't know who will kill who but I expect many publishers will be cut/pasting Wikipedia, Wikia and Mahalo into Knol so I would watch it.
- Sam Pullara
But you've got the ace in the hole Mahalo Daily with Leah and Lons
- Andrew Fielding
from twhirl
I think it was just you saying Mahalo would kill Google :)
- James Joyner
Mahalo didn't need anyone to kill it, it was doing just fine at slow suicide.
- Jason Carreira
I made a promise not to go to Knol - ain't gonna do it.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I think Google has spent most of its good karma, Jason. You've got that going for you.
- Chris Baskind
I still say Pizza and Ice Cream is the Mahalo killer
- Noah David Simon
Google provides ads for both Knol and Mahalo. So, they might prefer to kill Wikipedia
- Kerem Ozkan
I don’t see knol been comparable to Mahalo, not even Knol been comparable to WikiPedia. There is only one and unique service in each side of the fence, but Google Knol does not seem to be any killer as its too much "formal" for earlier adopters and that can be a “turnoff” for most users
- Joao
Agree with others here...who said Mahalo would kill Google?
- Hutch Carpenter
You're in big trouble my friend...sorry. They have the R&D and the capital to do whatever they want.
- Ryan
Guys Jason is doing what Jason does and he is doing his best to create controversy which promotes Mahalo by keeping it in the headlines etc. Why do you think he is the one always bringing it up. I love this about Jason, clever guy. I still remember the famous 'how to get a link from Jason' linkbait rules.
- Roger Kondrat
Smoke and mirrors doesn't make Mahalo suck less, though
- Jason Carreira
Knol would have to kill about.com first before it gets to Mahalo.
- Morton Fox
it will go knolwhere - ahaaahaaahaaa
- Anne Haynes
I don't. see my blog, I even photoshpped ya ;)
- sean percival
once they integrate knol in their search results there's not much of a competitive advantage left for your product
- franzstehrn
As of today, I think it'd be a stretch to say that Mahalo and Knol are even positioned to move on the same target markets. Leaving aside my personal suspicions that Google will bore with Knol and scuttle it before it matures into a threat, at the moment about.com and squidoo are its direct competitors, as others have pointed out.
- Derrick Burns
the team (which rolled out Knoll) has US-centric obsession (see their FAIL with identification), hence it won't get any better soon on global level, so.... looks like another Yahoo service or what?
- A.T.
Given that you are first and foremost a businessman Jason -- what is your exit strategy with Mahalo?
- Nicholas Kreidberg
Not worried at all, frankly. I took a look at it and am simply not impressed.
- Andrew Dobrow
I've yet to hear Mahalo was a Google killer.
- Chris Nixon
oh.. scoble and some others said human search/mahalo/social search would kill google. I never said i agreed with that... i don't buy into the whole one company kills another since that really doesn't happen often. Apple is doing amazing without kill microsoft, and microsoft has amazing market share and they are not killing Apple. normally 2-3 companies share a market... and in human powered search we will be one of them. :-)
- Jason Calacanis
