Most of these pictures were tiny, so the resolution is pretty poor. All the black and white ones my mom developed herself in our closet, er, darkroom. - Ana from Bookmarklet
Amazing! See a lot of sceneries of China in 1980s that I've never seen before. - K.D.
I need to do this with mine as well. Good reminder. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod

Robert: your tweet is now the popular here http://iran.twazzup.com/ - Johni Fisher
None of this reporting -- None of it -- would be possible without online tools. Robert -- there's the 2010 Web! I seem to remember your earlier question (a few months ago) about the definition of journalism. This is it. It's not up to the "paid journalists" at the NY Times or Chicago Tribune anymore. It's up to you, me, people like @jamesbuck, and the person who took this photo and put it online. - Curt Mercadante
Curt: amen! - Robert Scoble
I'm not really surprised, Iranians are a lot more empowered than people in the West think. It is *not* Saudi Arabia! - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Robert: I didn't even think about the photographer! Thanks for pointing that out. I do believe I'll be looking at all these pics in a different light now. - Alex Hellstrom
Thanks for getting this out. It's so easy to get lost in tweeting about our silly mundane lives that we forget how important images like this can result in making people aware and helping to make a difference in the world. - mrsha
More live updates about #Iran can be found in here: http://www.monitter.com/ - Nir Ben Yona

Robert Scoble, Thank you for informing about current news in Iran. We will never forget this. (from Iran) - Zahra (raoros)
I thought the same thing last night. Maybe the Iranians finally are willing to make some change. - Tom Searing
@Tom Searing: I hope so, the only way is change... - Zahra (raoros)
Photo of the year. - Mike Doeff
moment! - reality

Curt, right, after listening to Scoble on a panel about the future of Journalism, and he was the only one "journalizing" it via Kyte, I wrote a post that the future of Journalism is a video camera or in this case a camera. I remember that it was the camera and video camera that stopped Vietnam for instance - Stephen Pickering
And, putting aside for a bit whether or not CNN ignored the story -- we're now getting news that NBC's Tehran office may have been raided and the BBC has been told to "get lost." Under oppressive, censoring regimes like we have in Iran, North Korea and China -- citizen journalists empowered by new communications tools will be the ONLY way we get accurate news from these regions. - Curt Mercadante
Curt Mercadante 100+ - Bora Zivkovic

Inspiring. Let's hope the government falls. Because if it doesn't, there will probably be vicious repression. - Bob Morris (polizeros)

I love the fact that people start setting up proxy servers for the people in Iran: http://bit.ly/Fiqmb - Holger Eilhard
Shocking stuff - Tyson Key
If anyone ever doubted the revolutionary, real-time impact of Social Media, this photo easily dispels those misconceptions.... - John Fenzel
Amir: you have a fan for life. I hope you do win the Pulitzer Prize. I think you got the iconic photo of the election protests. This one should hang in Newseum's Pulitzer Gallery. Can you tell us how you shot it, and give us more details about what was going on in your head as you pressed the shutter button? To everyone else, don't you love friendfeed? - Robert Scoble
Amir: when I took photojournalism at San Jose State University one quote stuck in my mind from all those classes over the years "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." That quote was from Robert Capa, here's an article in Time Magazine about it: http://www.time.com/time... You have gotten close enough. Congrats, I can't even imagine trying to get this close. I hope all comes out well for your country and you. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I've only been using friendfeed for about 5 days and I'm already in love with it. I guess I picked a good time to try it out! - Alex Hellstrom
Amir, what do you shoot with? - EricaJoy

Scoble’s Building 43 Launching Tonight With Practical Tips For Businesses Stuck In The 90’s - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
I think there's a problem with Building 43's mission, purpose, goal or whatever you want to call it. It claims to be for "Internet fanatics" yet it puts out info for businesses stuck in the 90's??? If you're a fanatic, you're pushing towards the 10s, not stuck in the 90s. I honestly don't get who this B43 blog is targeted to. Maybe it's just me. - Dawn
Dawn: the truth of the matter is a site like this has to be aimed at both. If you don't get internet fanatics to come and visit, or better yet, like and link, then you won't get into search engines, which is where other people will come by. Also, most old school folks will get these videos emailed to them by someone who is, um, a little more current. So you've gotta get the fanatics excited but aim at a level where they get emailed around to their bosses or to their friends. - Robert Scoble
For instance, one of the guys who came to our launch party last night is a VC who is highly involved in all this new stuff. His wife, though, owns a yogurt shop and her web site isn't using much of the new stuff, if any at all. So he'll email her videos to give her ideas for how to update her site. But I gotta go through him and get him interested enough in the site and what we're talking about. It's a tough balance. - Robert Scoble
If that's the case, then I would drop the "fanatic" stuff. As a nongeek myself, I can tell you that it's too intimidating. Also, concentrating on the fanatics and the people a decade behind misses all the folks in between, who I think are the majority. You don't have to be a full-fledged geek to be tech savvy and tech appreciative. You could position the site to attract ANYbody by just being a place where people can catch up to the Web's bleeding edge, no matter how close they are to it now. - Dawn
I totally agree with Dawn's last comment. People stuck in the 90's Web must surely be a minority group. It's almost impossible to navigate the Web without picking up on new trends, and if you were Web active in the 90's, little has really changed on the technical side of the Web that would make it difficult for you to catch up, on the contrary Web 2.0 has been about streamlining user... more... - Andrew Eglinton
Word of Mouth FTW - Susan Beebe
Just calling it building 43 feels elitist and exclusionary to me - it doesn't mean anything to me nor, I'm sure, anyone I work with, and I'm an industry guy and have been building web sites since 1995... just not in the US. (I feel a bit like Tom Hanks in Big putting my hand up..) If you're trying to bridge a gap between people, then you have to make it clearer that that's what you're doing I think. - Chris Dymond
"Exclusionary" is a good word. The tech world is often too exclusionary, IMO. If B43 doesn't make nongeeks feel welcome and respected, they aren't going to be a part of it. Instead of launching B43 at TechCrunch with the usual insiders, it would have been much better to launch it at that wife's yogurt shop. - Dawn
Chris Dymond - When I heard the name, I felt the same way as you did. Only a very few people know what Building 43 is and most of them are in Silicon Valley. It is sort of the geek equivalent to Disney's WED Club 33. The Club 33 has been around for decades, but even the most crazed Disney fan (and alot of newer Imagineers) don't know about Club 33. - Kay Designer

Why there will be many Twitters (Scripting News). http://www.scripting.com/stories...
Now if only Twitter can integrate video (or vice versa) within the stream ... (That's my personal wish for the service.) - Brandon Mendelson
Brandon, if you tweet from the web you can install this script, Troy's One Twitter Script 2 Rule Them All http://tinyurl.com/dbc753 and it will, among other things, show videos and pictures in your Twitter stream. - Sharon McPherson
Sharon, I just came across Troy's script today and am loving the connected updates and replies. Haven't investigated it further yet. - Molly
Hi Molly, I like being able to follow the tweet threads right from my Twitter page, but I think my favorite feature of Tony's script is the ability to write notes to myself about my followers and those that I follow from their profile pages. - Sharon McPherson
OMG I can do that? I gotta investigate this further. I lose track of people I"m interested in if they don't post for awhile (forget what they do, etc..). Cool that I can make my own notes. - Molly

A dollar bill taped to the floor of friendfeed's offices: - http://www.flickr.com/photos...
07/07/2008
This is a dollar bill taped to the floor of FriendFeed's headquarters. It's a bit of social engineering. They figured out it kept people from tripping on the cord cover because people noticed the money on the floor. - Robert Scoble
Hahaha, now that is brilliant stuff. Awesome. - James Mowery from twhirl
This is a fantastic idea. - Jeremy Botter
Wouldn't last long in my office. - Ralph Whitbeck
Amazing.. think I could use this idea in a few places. - Roberto Bonini
Clever! i love it. - Federico [Kurai] from twhirl
Simple, clever, great idea. That FriendFeed crew is a bunch of smart fellers! - Brandon Wood
My employer is too frugal to do that. - Jonathon
Inexpensive risk management. - Dave Pelland
Ha! Very clever. - Brent Newhall
brilliant - mjc
Wow! I'm speechless. - directeur from NoiseRiver
nice - Mike Collett
The dollar bill trick doesn’t work with strippers though ;) - Tony C
@Earl: Consider it a stripper-filter, then. You know someone's a stripper if they trip over it. - April Buchheit
for some reason i expect a "stripper filter" to be something coded using regular expressions. sad, i know. - Karim
The message here is that Web 2.0 companies are so ignorant of money and revenue that they even step over a dollar on the floor - Jason Carreira from twhirl
Genius!!! - Joe Dawson
Interesting. The photo has been viewed more than 500 times, but has only earned 62 likes and 19 comments. So, for every 1 thing we can see here there's another 9 people hanging out lurking in the shadows. - Robert Scoble
@Scoble the old 90-9-1 rule :) (well almost) - Naor Mark
You could always just superglue some road kill to those things. Nothing gets people's attention more than a dead opossum. - Andrew Leyden
wow, that's funny smart! - Susan Beebe
I stubbed my toe on that dollar. - Michael Muller
Heath And Safety in the UK would not approve....but I do! - Toby Graham
"but has only earned 62 likes". This currently stands as the most-liked Flickr photo of all time. - Raphael, Raphael
I forgot about that photo. It does work, though. Everytime I visit friendfeed's offices I see the dollar and I'm careful not to trip over it. :-) - Robert Scoble
That's dumb. Why couldn't they afford to run the cord somewhere where it wouldn't be in the way in the first place? - Robert Peña
As an IE I can state that's definitely not something to publicize. Definitely not OSHA Kosher. - Adi
Great idea will have to remember this. - Laura Gonzalez
Reminds me of the deli counter in grocery store in Scotts Valley across the street from NorCal offices of MetaCreations (the Fractal Design arm of it). Local companies'd go there for lunch daily. PROBLEM: Deli counter pencils (for marking your sandwich menu) disappeared at frightful rate. SOLUTION: Deli affixed pencils with price label. Price: $100.00. Pencils stayed at store. :) - Susan A. Kitchens
Haha I like that trick for keeping Pens from going missing Susan! - Garin Kilpatrick

Hello friendfeeders from my cell phone. - http://cinch.blogtalkradio.com/roberts...
Cool, now I can call into friendfeed with my cell phone. - Robert Scoble
I used to use the service that let you record audio tweets. I miss that one... - Ontario Emperor
Just signed up for Cinch. - Ontario Emperor
Ok Robert, to play devil's advocate, how is this any different than the original Utterz which I distinctly remember you dissing at SXSW last year? Personally been a fan of audio posts for some time... - Jennifer Van Grove
Jennifer: I don't remember dissing Utterz, but it probably had something to do with the brand name. Or the fact that it was yet another service I had to use. Sometimes I am wrong, though, about new services. Might have been in this case. - Robert Scoble
Two comments (1) I don't think I'm ever going to warm up to this in-line mixed media thing. I'm always irked when reading through blog comments and mixed in among the text is a little thumbnail of a Seesmic video. I can either track down headphones, turn the speakers on, or (more likely) just skip it. Have the same reaction to this in-line cell phone stuff. (2) Bah humbug, and get off my lawn. - Ken Sheppardson
Replying to @kshep again: I totally aggree. (again) maybe it's cuz I just turned 29 tonight & I'm feeling old(er) - Chris Heath
Robert, it was probably in jest but there was definitely a moment when you put down audio posts...something like, "why would I do that, when I can do video?"...I think you were even recording video at the time. :) - Utterz name was very bad, I'll give ya that. - Jennifer Van Grove
@Chris 29??? You're a whippersnapper! - Jeremy Brooks
Awesome Scobez! I'm signing up now. DRUNK FF'ING HERE I COME!! - Tad
Robert how do you edit the title of the audio file from date and time to a text title. - Shaun Haney
Wow. Thanks Robert. I've been looking for a practical way to use BTR with what I have to work with and this looks like it's perfect. - Brandon Mendelson
I Tweeted my baby's first cries with this - I believe you did, too Robert - Jesse Stay
Except it looks like they've modified and improved it considerably - Jesse Stay
I've used Utterli before and it works fine. The audio quality from this sounds good. - Rodfather
Very cool !!! - Nir Ben Yona
Great for blind people. - Rutger Blom
Now that's cool. It's like a Twitter-sized podcasting tool. - Jeff Harbert
Wow, that opens up the possibilities. Good catch! - Damond Nollan
that is pretty cool. Am just wondering in which situations I would use it.... anyway, its fun, so I'll probably give it a go - Peter Efland
With the Tumblr iPhone app, I can do the same thing (of course it posts to my tumble log as well..) - Phil G
I just realized how old this post is.. haha oh well. - Phil G
This is really good, I'll have to check out Utterz too. By the way (totally off topic, sorry) Robert thanks for pointing out to me that the "Semantalyzr" name needed to change. I didn't realize the importance of a good site name until I talked with you on the phone one day and you mentioned the name needed to change. I'm planning to have the name changed by May 1st to something easier to say, spell and digest overall - John Wright
There's also a service called TwitHear, with which you can do a similar thing in Twitter. The advantage with this is that the flash player appears in FriendFeed automatically. - Abounding Media
I think you should check out : http://audioboo.fm - Orli Yakuel

Oh, Robert. You must be devastated! - Bruce Lewis
Mwahahahahahahahaha! That's what you get for never making him cut his hair! ROFLMAO! - Alex Scoble
If that's the worse he listens to, I wouldn't worry to much :) - Adam Phillips
Bruce: I am. Kids shouldn't like the music their parents liked in high school. That is just wrong. - Robert Scoble
To rub salt in the wound he likes Journey too. - Robert Scoble
It knows what it is good. - Ingrid Ferrari
I agree with Adam. Better that than Rap (marginally). - David
Adam: I like Eminem. It is weird when kids like nicer music than their parents. - Robert Scoble
Robert... at least you have similar tastes in music... good way to bond with your son... - Harold - Happy 2010
My two adore *gulp* classic rock. My (14yo) daughter's favorite songs are Vienna (Billy Joel), Old Time Rock n Roll (Bob Seger), Mary Jane (Alanis Morrissette), Take On Me (A-Ha)... and one other I can't remember. - Ladybug Heather
Yegad. Not Journey. I feel for you. But he's young. He may recover eventually. I once had a cat who liked Journey. Broke my heart. - Rebecca
Journey and Bon Jovi aren't nicer music than Eminem. Eminem is talented. Bon Jovi is a hack. - Alex Scoble
Nothing wrong with Bon Jovi, my son likes Def Leopard, and Van Halen - Russ Jackson
But I am actually just having some fun with Patrick. We both like a wide range of music. Anyway, we are driving across the Golden Gate bridge listening to Bon Jovi -- the sunset here was spectacular. - Robert Scoble
Tell him to stop being such a dork. Feed him a constant diet of electronic. - Alex Scoble
Hey, so did I as a kid. You do though have the option of beating it out of him....I hear that approach works occasionally! - Gil Rodriguez
Don't feel bad Robert, my 14 yr old loves hip hop whereas I grew up with classic rock. - Brad Stolba
At least now we are listening to Journey "when the lights go down in the city." nothing like SF music to listen to on a stunningly beautiful night. - Robert Scoble
Robert you could always consider adoption. ;) - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I want to Like Rebecca's comment. - Bruce Lewis
Alex, you don't know what you're talking about. Bon Jovi has worked his ass off to keep his band relevant for 20+ years. We're all hacks by your definition. Sorry, you give love a bad name. - Eric Thompson
Bon Jovi has some good hits. All of you old farts who are listening to Eminen need to get over the fact your getting older. Alex, I'm sorry Eminen isn't for you. - Patrick Scoble
Bon Jovi has tried to keep his band relevant? Epic RELEVANCE FAIL! :) - Alex Scoble
Patrick, admitting you have a problem is the first step toward recovery. - Bruce Lewis
Oh yeah and lost highway isn't that great of an album. It was just there for picture purposes. There are a lot of Bon Jovi albums that are really good though. - Patrick Scoble
I went to a Bon Jovi concert some years back (not my idea). They sure made people think mullets are still relevant. - Rodfather
Oh yeah and Alex don't worry I get my electronica in. I have a very diverse taste of music. - Patrick Scoble
In this case diverse isn't such a good thing. :p - Alex Scoble
You mean where did you go RIGHT - Mike Nayyar
Don't listen, Patrick. Electronica rulez. Seriously. - Kamilah Gill
And I didn't say electronica. :) Electronic or EDM. Only haters call it electronica or techno. - Alex Scoble
I said what Patrick said, Alex. I don't normally refer to it as electronica either. House, IDM, jungle, whatever it actually is. - Kamilah Gill
Yeah, Kamilah, don't be a hater. :) - Alex Scoble
:P :P :P *rolls eyes* Patrick! do they always do this to you too?? - Kamilah Gill
Naw., Patrick and I are good...as long as he stays off the PS3. - Alex Scoble
This thread makes me so glad I grew up pre-internet. - Alix Whitmire
Alix, it isn't too late. We can make fun of your musical tastes now. - Bruce Lewis
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON JOVI!!! - Micah Wittman
I'll pass, thanks. :D *hides last.fm feed* - Alix Whitmire
And? Poodle rock not good enough for you, Robert? - WorldofHiglet
Patrick looks great, although a bit like you:-) - Francine Hardaway from twhirl
Oh, and thanks, Robert, I now have "when the lights go down in the city" stuck in my head. Wunnerful - Rebecca
Rebecca: it is THE song to listen to while driving across the Golden Gate bridge at dusk. Does stick in your head, huh? - Robert Scoble
I would give the song special dispensation for that circumstance, but I'm 3000 miles away. - Rebecca
Taaake mee doooowwwn in a blaaaze of glooooory..... - The Way Things Are
I am so, so sorry. But like I tell my kids, I'll always love them no matter what. - Herb Hernandez

CNBC is reporting on Twitter right now. CNBC mentions a $250 million value. @ev is talking on a report on the broadcast now.
"Twitter plans to launch their own ads by the end of the second quarter." - Thomas Hawk
And now CNBC is pimping their Twitter account again big time. - Thomas Hawk
Meanwhile, Biz is on KQED's Forum call-in show. Can't say they're not getting their fair share of press, eh? - Ken Sheppardson
Every time I see this type of tweet/post I always have to say "but where's the conversation gone", no one @ anyone more than once anymore conversationally. Where has that engagement gone? - Richard A.
The CNBC account has a little over 800 followers now. They are only following a single Twitter account. Peter A. McKay, a reporter for the WSJ. http://twitter.com/peteramckay - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, in other words it's an rss feed on twitter, which isn't necessarily a bad thing... - Richard A.
They still haven't signed up for FF yet, despite your best efforts to attract their attention. Twitter is a good place to talk about what you had for lunch, but only FF can turn your choice of food into a raging debate on the price of tea in China. - Davis Freeberg
I noticed that too Thomas. CNBC doesn't seem to get twitter, to them it's just another broadcast stream. Still amused by the relatively few followers after all this pimping. Surely we'd prefer individual CNBC personalities & interactions over an RSS feed? - Steven Cains
they're about to broadcast the Twitter segment again. - Thomas Hawk
Hopefully, the @ replies have come to FriendFeed. - elroy

$700 Billion Bailout Celebrated With Lavish $800 Billion Executive Party - The Onion
""I'm glad we were all humble enough to recognize that we couldn't do this on our own," said AIG CEO Edward Liddy, sitting in a hot tub filled with Cristal and seven dozen endangered-quail eggs. "Having come so close to disaster, it is crucial that I eat these 24-karat-gold-leaf-wrapped chocolate truffles to boost stockholder morale and show all the critics and naysayers that we are carrying on just as we always have." "Do not worry, America," Liddy added. "It's business as usual at AIG."" - Ana from Bookmarklet
When did The Onion begin reporting serious news? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark I don't know but they have been right on lately. - CW™
After the press congress and the general public finish, AIG will spend millions on getting thier asses RE Sleeved. - Tony C from fftogo

Nailing the AIG meme - Hutch Carpenter
Hey, they should be allowed to celebrate the receipt of the 700 billion in bailout funds...They should have kept the party budget below the bailout amount, but come on people! Which one of us HASN'T gone over budget by $100 billion when organizing a special event?? Let's make sure our houses are clean before we go judging the houses of others... - Morgan Haley
The craziest thing is that this article was written in December 2008. Good to see that AIG is still keepin' it real. - Ana
Whats especially (not) funny about this is that The Onion's bailout tab is likely to end up closer to the truth than the one being tossed around presently ($180b). - Anthony Citrano
Leave it to comedians to cut through the BS and tell us how it really is. There's a reason why a king had a court jester. Look it up... (Jester on wikipedia). I nominate Jon Stewart as Secretary of Jester. - Eric Thompson
I think Liddy is getting a bum rap. He didn't lead AIG into this mess, he was brought on six months ago to fix it. It's just easy to be mad at him even when the overwhelming majority of angry people don't understand what is going on; they just think they do. http://finalcut.newsvine.com/_news... - Bill Rawlinson

I'm back. Four teens killed in Roseville, MI yesterday by drunk driver (yep, the day before annual green beer/get drunk [for many] day today ... sad!) Families struggle to pay funeral arrangements. If I win, I'll give the $$ to their funeral fund and tell 'em that a Net wunderkind gave it to me, to give to them. They could really use it. - Carlo At Your Service
Robert, I’m a little taken aback, this is absolutely fantastic; I can’t thank you enough. I’m currently in a computer cluster at university as all Virgin Media broadband connections where I live have gone down. I would’ve loved to have participated in more of a discussion, but this cluster closes in 15 minutes. My ISP predicts that I’ll be re-connected by 19:00 (GMT) on the 19th. I may... more... - Daniel Rowley

I wish I could have won, but the top three are much more deserving of the money. Besides, Robert, having you promote my service when I finally get it launched would be worth much more than $1000 in my mind! - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Robert, thanks again for all your help. I shared your gift with the team and they were speechless. I was listening to the broadcast from work and kept dropping the connection. I only caught about 15 min. I really can't tell you how appreciative I am for your help. Wow!, Robert. Thank You. Mind and heart reeling and speechless... Still up at 02:55 grindstoning away, paying so much attention to the $&!% storm at hand that I haven't had time to come in and see how things were progressing with your very, very difficult choices to make. I agree with the commenters' thoughts above; especially Martha who wrote that it is truly "One of the Internet's finer moments" and I am humbled by it. May we continue on to do the same for others one day not too far off and do you proud. - B.E. (BJ) Johnson
Derrick
I leave for LA Tues. as my first SXSW comes to an end. This whole thing has been *such* an experience. I've come in contact with some awesome people, armed myself with some knowledge, and my digital life from here on out will be definitely enhanced for the better.
I still don't understand a lot of tech stuff. I'll probably still have to have a buddy of mine update my Wordpress blog, and maybe I'll get to using RSS feeds (yep, I still bookmark), but I *do* feel comfortable about using the available technology to the best of my advantage for self-expression. And in a small way, I felt that pieces of you, my FF peeps, were all there with me. - Derrick
good on ya D! glad it worked out so well for you! :-) - Live4Emma (L4S)
I don't quite know how all of this exposure to people and things and programs will manifest, but I'm excited about it, and all those drunken, very gay and mayhem-filled texts and Twitter messages? Sorry about that. :) - Derrick
And FYI, despite the shout outs, FF didn't seem to have a very big presence here. Lots of 'Oh, I know FriendFeed...' but not a lot of users. Maybe we can express that to the FF powers that be? - Derrick
what's sxsw? - Egyirba
Nothing to apologize for D. :-* - MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
Sounds like you had a great time! - Rutger Blom
Best vacation in a long time. San Francisco might be jealous since I cheated on it with Austin. Have to amend for it with my trip up next month... - Derrick
egyirba: SXSW = South by Southwest, an annual interactive, film and music festival that takes place in Austin, TX every year ....EDIT um yeah, "every year" is kind of the definition of "annual" isn't it? - tiffany
Thomas Hawk
Damn. CNBC is totally going on the offensive today. Stewart hasn't been mentioned once but Cramer's show today is basically a compilation of every other talk show he's ever been on and every call he's ever gotten right. It's pretty obvious that this is in direct response to Stewart's broadcast.
They are really trying hard to rebuild their credibility. It almost feels like they are trying wayyyy too hard. Cramer's gotten a ton wrong over the past few years. To try and only highlight stuff he's gotten right is misleading. It's the wrong way to counter the Jon Stewart problem. - Thomas Hawk
today's show is like one huge endorsement of Cramer including even gimmicky stuff like Chris Matthews wishing him a happy birthday. Basically they are surrounding him in promos with the most credible people saying good things about him. They've pulled out everyone from Dr. Phil to Stephen Colbert in clips to paint him in a positive light. - Thomas Hawk
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day. - Jasmin Patry
CNBC is in a bit of a spot. They suck and have been outed for it but they can't really admit that it's true. - ·[▪_▪]·
Jasmin, that's it. Highlighting calls that he's gotten right could just be luck. He's gotten so much wrong over the past few years that to try and somehow paint him as a financial genius in response to the Stewart interview just comes across as pathetic. - Thomas Hawk
I was just wondering what Kramer's hit rate is - i.e. how many wrong vs. how many right - Bindu Reddy
Is there any way to counter it right? - Jens Christian Freund
They're doing this because their ratings have gone down 24%. Yet, Stewart's have gone up 20%. - Michael Forian
that's it Bindu. there is no public hit rate that I'm aware of, but he has gotten a lot wrong. To try and counter that by selectively highlighting clips over the past four years where he's made a right call is totally and completely misleading and I bet it ends up backfiring. If I were Stewart I'd show the same promos they are showing today with him getting everything right and then after it show an identical promo with him getting everything wrong. Selectively pulling his right calls is disingenuous. - Thomas Hawk
Jens - by doing what he said he do on Stewart's show. Go forward being a good reporter, doggedly follow stories and work to expose those he knows to be lying to him. This attempt to go forward as if everything is Smurfy is just insulting - Matthew DeVries
The way to counter the criticism is to issue a mea culpa and both promise to do and do better. Anything else is just horseshit. - Brian Sullivan
Brian - curse you for saying the exact same I did, in 20 fewer words. Curse you and your lingual efficiency! - Matthew DeVries
Not only are they going forward as everything is smurfy, they are painting him as a financial genius who gets everything right. Colbert: "hip, hip, hooray Jim Cramer!" The show is full of every other commentator who has every said anything positive about him combined with selective clips of him making right calls. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas and Bindu, this might give you an idea of the accuracy on his 2008 predictions: http://www.businessandmedia.org/article... - Michael Forian
Brian's right, mea culpa and promise and do better. This circus show of a show today is just over the top. CNBC didn't need to take this tact and it's going to end up backfiring on them I bet. They are trying too hard to push their credibility. It rings false. - Thomas Hawk
I guess they ( the suits) won't get it until the populous is outside with pitchforks and torches( this is not a threat ). - Erik Weese
What really struck me about Cramer when he was on Stewart was how sheepish he was. Probably knew he was in hostile territory. So I guess that makes him a coward for appearing to accept his failures in the interview and then going and pulling something like this. - Jasmin Patry
NBC Brian Williams endorsing him. Showing the Iron Man clip. Showing clips of college students calling him a hero. it's just one big marketing show marketing Jim Cramer today. - Thomas Hawk
The thing is Stewart called him out as a snakeoil salesmen and rather than try to become more professional today he just comes out with more snakeoil than he ever had on any show ever. The truth of the matter is sometimes Cramer gets it right, more often lately though he's been getting it wrong and the show is entertainment not financial advice. - Thomas Hawk
CNBC's gotta know they're just setting up Stewart's next move, compiling and calling them out on it. I wonder what their follow-up move is? - Kevin Fox
As Karl Rove famously said, "If you're explaining, you're losing." - John Craft
If I were Stewart I'd replay his promos today with him getting everything right and then immediately after it make their own promo of one of him getting everything wrong. The fact that they cherry picked good calls for today's promos was stupid. It's easy to counter and he'll look foolish for even trying to counter this way. - Thomas Hawk
Daily Show ftw. - Will Higgins™
you know the daily show is going to have a field day with this. - Carlos Ayala
Really? Someone made bad financial predictions in the last 12 months? Burn them at the stake! - Ryan Kaisoglus
I (I think) agree with Ryan: Fighting back with a clip reel of Cramer's bad calls misses the point. You have to call out CNBC for distorting reality rather than just replying with another distortion in hopes that it'll prove a more subtle point. - Kevin Fox
Ryan, when he's running ads for his show like "In Cramer We Trust", I think it would be appropriate to burn him at the stake. - Michael Forian
Chris, not when he's acting like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Michael Forian
Destined for the trash heap. Unquestioned loyalty to the subject bring investigated <> 5th estate; CNBC proves they have no interest in that roll. Now we can question whether they can even claim entertainment value as a mitigating feature of their diatribe. - David HC Soul
They should have never given TDS credence in the first place sending Cramer to all their sister channels to defend himself from a comedy show. Now they're digging a bigger hole completely missing the point of Stewart's ire. NBC has a lot of financial assets to protect, but this is so not the way to do it. - Admiral Anika
bidniss as usual! - Richard pancakhaus Walker
The problem isn't in Cramer - it's in ANY show that claims that they have expertise in Wall Street and has stunning accuracy. It's the same kind of tactic that is used by the infomercial services that share gambling predictions for sporting events. Rather than Cramer promising that he'll do better, the world would be better served if Cramer AND ALL THE OTHER FINANCIAL SHOWS simply issued their predictions, and when they get them wrong - and they WILL get them wrong - analyze and figure out WHY. - John E. Bredehoft
Michael, I guess my point was...if you are going to crucify Cramer, you've got lots of other people to crucify at the same time. And if individual investors are taking his word as the one and only truth, it's their fault - not Cramer's, or CNBC's. Just as you should diversify your investments, you should diversify the sources of your investment advice. - Ryan Kaisoglus
I agree with the pundit who says Cramer will be gone in six months. This is good news. He himself admits to gaming the market and misleading others--both crimes. Perhaps a little jail time will set him straight. It's what I'm hoping for--as well as Stewart staying on the attack. - Shawn Michel de Montaigne
Kevin - not really where I was going with my comment, but we agree on your point. The best move that CNBC could have made, IMO? A clip reel of Jon Stewart's bad jokes. ;-) - Ryan Kaisoglus
Ryan, you should always keep an open mind to different investments. But seriously, do people actually trust the TV? I'd say the internet is an investor paradise. - Michael Forian
In my opinion, if I were CNBC I'd just drop it entirely, and over the next few months add a few personalities or shows that are chock-full of journalistic integrity. Of course, the root problem is that they're trying to fill 17 hours of programming a day, and they can't do that without adding 'entertainment' to 'information'. - Kevin Fox
CBNC painted themselves into a corner. If they ignore their issue with Stewart, then maybe it goes away - until the next time one of their own slips up. So instead, they turn this into a personal vendetta between two personalities, which helps to diffuse Stewart's message - unless Stewart come after them again. - Steven Perez
Plus, there's an x-factor here no one has thought of - Stephen Colbert. If Colbert's mug was used in their spots, CNBC then runs the risk of having ***two*** professional comedians gunning for their network. Stewart hits them with truth, and then Colbert makes them looks like buffoons. They're stuck, so they have to pimp their message hard. - Steven Perez
Chris White, when I saw Jon Stewart I began thinking of JIMMY Stewart. "Mr. Smith goes to Wall Street" or something like that. - John E. Bredehoft
inevitable and good news - Thomas Power
Someone in a position to know told me that CNBC top brass was absolutely mortified by the interview; they did not expect it to go as poorly (for CNBC) as it did. This would appear to be a clumsy attempt at damage repair and control. - Anthony Citrano
I guess CNBC brass didn't hear about the "Jon Stewart Killed Crossfire" incident. - Daniel J. Pritchett
fixcnbc.com - will it matter? - Aaman (Clone of FF)
definitely damage control but wayyy too obvious. By highlighting everyone famous who loves Cramer and all his right picks they are giving Stewart and opportunity to contrast that with the opposite in order to point out that it's must more of the same business as usual BS at your spin doctored CNBC. - Thomas Hawk
I haven't watched Mad Money in a while (got rid of cable). But when I was watching it his show didn't seem to be as much about him picking stocks as it was about getting people to do their homework and invest smart, according to what he thinks is smart investing. I heard him say many times to not just go and buy and sell stocks just based on his opinions. - ChiliMac
Cramer is a joke inside the business. A clown. - John Flynn
@Chris, he said she lost a lot, right? But it wasn't from 'playing the stock market' it was from 'investing long term.' The kind of investment that is good and stable and will always go up as we're always told was nullified by the dudes 'playing the market' and that's part of his anger. - Chieze Okoye
@ChiliMac This isn't about Crammer's financial advice. He jumped of the Obama bandwagon and Stewart is being a loyal cultist and attacking him for it. - Robert Hafer
must of hit a nerve. :) - CW™
@Robert: not even close. this is not about politics, it's about the media. Stewart pissed off the media elites and now he's on the block. people didn't trash talk him while be beat up Bush or Kerry. they got on his case when he beat up Carlson and Cramer. - MikeAmundsen
Robert, that's hilarious - anna sauce
@MikeAdmundsen which is why Stewart is more of a true journalist that most of these media dweebs. - Helen Sventitsky
@Helen: i enjoy Stewart's show, but i like my journalism straight-no chaser. i miss in-depth researched reporting that spans several days/weeks/months. i like pointed questions and dogged reporters. details that take minutes to read and understand, not seconds. i like the background as well as the foreground characters. finally, i'm not interested in the *big* story, but the *long* story. really miss that kind of reporting. - MikeAmundsen
Count on Robert to go all Politico on the media. Stewart and his writers have the common sense, down to earth touch of someone like Will Rogers. Much of the show consists of playing clips of words media mavens actually blurted out on the record. We have gone from Wall Street Week with Lewis Rukeyser, a once-a-week panel and interview PBS show, to several full time networks desperate for content, starving for any sort of bell-ringing, horn-honking ego-bozo in just a few years. I blame the boomers. - Phil Boiarski
CNBC sucks. They aren't a news org, they are entertainment and spin. frak 'em.! - Greg
Robert Scoble
Mint.com just wigged me out. I got a press release that said they just hit a million users. As I was reading that Mint's CEO said hi to me. Now THAT is good PR!
iPhone app isn't bad either - Josh Haley
not to mention the thousands who'll see the release now since you pushed it out to FF. - George Dearing
I've been plugging it as well - I get harped on about using my debit card all the time. When I tell folks about Mint.com, they rethink cash! - Jason P. Brown
Intuit rejects Mint.com's reality and substitutes their own! - Paul Reynolds
I love mint.com, just sucks that I can't get my bank and mint.com to work together - so I can't use it. FAIL. - Les Zaldor
still needs some tweaking - fijidaddy
Mint is still frustrating me because I cannot manually enter transactions. I hate not knowing what money is REALLY available to me. - ChiliMac
Just wait until he shows up at your office asking why you have not logged in lately! :-) - Bill Pennington from twhirl
Mint STILL claims to be a budgeting tool, which it absolutely isn't. Their budget "feature" stinks. I still use it for the information flow and good GUI. But they need to focus on the real meat of the tool. - Chris Stevenson
Agree--#Mint.com's "budget tool" is really not one, but it is useful as a general guide to where you've been, and the site looks neat and is fast. Am waiting and hoping for more usability and "meat" as well. And the ability to enter manual transactions--that's a deal-maker right there. - Adrian
Ugh .. I can't get past the account details requirements. It counters all reason. When in doubt, leave it out. - Mattb4rd
@Les Zaldor - have you tried Wesabe.com? They do a good job accessing most banks - David Knight

Can't wait to see where you take this Robert. When's the next Seattle Friendfeed meetup? Congrats to you and Rocky!. Exciting times these are. Best of luck on this new chapter! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Leo's feed for Gillmor Gang: http://live.twit.tv/ - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Great to hear. This may be the perfect resource for a job I'm interviewing for later this week as well. - Dean Clark
good luck guys. I look forward to seeing what building 43 is all about. - gfurry
This is very interesting news. We just switched our file hosting for Pelotonics over to Mosso cloud hosting. I do believe it is a Rackspace company. Hmmm. I do wonder if this will narrow Robert's traditional focus however. - Troy Malone
Robert's new venture at RackSpace is exciting. Very curious about this Bldg 43 idea http://building43.com/# - Susan Beebe
Curious about this project. I hope it is inspirational and innovative. Good luck. - Carlos Lorenzo
Derrick
Sorry, Apple. I like your products for the most part, but my own personal headphones are awesome. How am I supposed to work around your talking ones with the new Shuffle with that, eh?
Aren't they coming out with an adapter? - ronin
Just a guess... but I think their target market for this isn't people who own a mp3 player... Let alone a kickass set of cans :) - Johnny Worthington
Yes - but who knows how much or if it's included in the box. - Mona Nomura
Apple had similar problem with the first generation iPhone too. People needed an adapter for some headphones. Recessed-headphone jack was utter fail. - John Wang
I seriously doubt they'll include one in the box. And it'll probably cost less than the headphones, but not by much. ;-p - ronin
Robert Scoble
Since USA is socialist now, according to conservative talk radio, I'm wondering when we'll get a good transit system like all other socialist countries in Europe? Not to mention health care for everyone?
good transit system.. still waiting for ours in quasi-socialist britain! It's quite sad, most forms of modern transit originated/pioneered in Britain yet we have the worst in the developed world :( - alphaxion
Don't forget Japan! - Mona Nomura
Japan has the best in the world from what I've seen.. Only system I've ever seen that apologises heavily for even a minutes delay! Tho, always remember that the Japanese system is a private company, not state run! - alphaxion
What countries in Europe would be on this list of "all other socialist countries"? - Brian Sullivan
alphaxion: I guarantee you that Britain's is worse than USAs. - Robert Scoble
Guess the lack of a good transit system and universal health care proves that the USA is not socialist ... yet. - Rene Wirtz
@Scobleizer Thanks to a socialist government once upon a time in Saskatchewan, Canada has a health-care system today. - Jaffer
@robert I know Britains is worse than the USA.. expensive and piss poor. We created the railway system, yet we've fucked it up through a constant swapping of private, state, private, state then private once again. Along with the total lack of investment that goes with it while state and the money grubbing greed of private use. It's obscene, £70 to £120 just to travel from Leeds to London. Disgusting! - alphaxion
"old socialist countries", i'm not so sure or very old!!! I can take the example of France !! we are not socialists since more of 10 years ! - Alice Cordonnier
They just did a study of extending DC's metro system down into Fredericksburg which is 50miles south of it. While it came out to be several billion dollars, the idea of it was cool to see just because it had been considered. Would be wonderful but will never happen. - Dean Clark
Mass transit here is pretty bad, 75' to the bus and when I get downtown I have to walk a whole block. And I only have 4 times to choose from. - Clarence Westberg
@alphaxion: You are correct, the privatization made British Railways from one of the best to one of the worst. Strange thing is, even after seeing things go downhill in the UK, the Dutch government decided to semi-privatize its railways, making it a lot worse. Luckily, Holland is a small country so effects are going to be minimal. - Rene Wirtz
Isn't "according to conservative talk radio" fairly unreliable? :) - Louis Gray
+100 Louis. - Alex Scoble
@Brian: from the top of my head: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Greece. And now of course, the former Eastern Bloc countries, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. - Rene Wirtz
There's enough dumbing down of America without repeating the stuipid socialist accusations. - Rod Bauer from twhirl
Phoenix just opened up a light rail system and ridership is 30% higher than they predicted. - Francine Hardaway from twhirl
Rene -- all those countries are socialist in your mind? What countries in Europe or elsewhere would be classed as non-socialist? - Brian Sullivan
@Brian: not only in my mind, though, these countries are all based in socialist principles, even though some countries don't have a socialist government per se anymore. Countries that are not socialist are: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria. - Rene Wirtz
Francine: light rail in Seattle has been a compleate boondoggle. It's not about predicted ridership, it needs to be about how many are served for how much per person. - Christian Burns
I would love to have a decent light rail system here. Our only option to get anywhere is to drive. We live in a gorgeous patch of farmland, and the traffic is starting to smog everything up. - Karoli
The lack of good rail system of any kind in the US is a travesty. I've never understood why that was the case. One would think you could be proud of a good rail system. It has nothing to do with being socialist of otherwise. Every time I go to Boston (to pick a US city), I enjoy hopping onto a train and just getting to places - Deepak Singh
regardless of the underlying intentions (socialism, liberalism, etc.) hasn't the time for universal healthcare and mainstream mass transportation finally come. I mean dammit people, stop the excuses and get some work done. What we need is the ability as a populous to prevent our government officials from getting paid if they fail to do their jobs...sessions over, and there are still bills on the table; sorry but I guess you don't get paid. - Bob Blunk
Christian: Over what period of time do you amortize the cost? A light rail system is a long, long term investment. Taking into account projected growth in the area alongside the longevity of the system, I'd imagine it's quite the bargain. - Karoli
Robert: I am starting to agree. We have a broken system that relies on insurance tied to employers. That must change. - Christian Burns
I think the biggest problem in the US is the sheer size of cities. New York and Chicago are the first and only ones to have adopted a subway system early enough on to actually offer viable public transport. In a city like Atlanta, there's 2 subway/lightrail lines, and there's over 5mio people and there's a lot of commuting. - Rene Wirtz
Great article about self-employment, freelancing, and health insurance http://www.city-journal.org/2009... - Karoli
Karoli: I live in rural area, transit just doesn't fit into our lives. Central planning to fix a decentralized problem. - Christian Burns
Rene, American cities aren't really that large, and definitely carry small populations. Tokyo does just fine with a wonderful rail system. The challenge is that to add transit now would take a lot of effort to fit into existing infrastructure, but IMO it has to be done - Deepak Singh
Loving trains in Japan and loved the trains when I lived in Portland. I would kill for high-speed between Los Angeles and San Francisco, so let's hope it comes soon. Decent but long article with some good points about US and high-speed trains here: http://is.gd/mrYY - Ken Brady
@Deepak: I disagree that American cities are not that large; traveling from one end of Atlanta Metro to the other is almost a 2 hour drive. There are countries in Europe where a 2 hour drive means crossing borders into another country. I do agree that a mass transit system must be added to a lot of cities. And now is the time. But, I do know that there is going to be a lot of... more... - Rene Wirtz
Rene -- do you have some sort cite that backs your assertion about which countries in Europe are socialist/non socialist (or based on socialist principles -- whatever that means). What about Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Russia? - Brian Sullivan
actually, the malaise in the british rail system dates to when the state took over them during the 40's. A lot of stations and routes were loss making but paid for by the more profitable. When the government took control they began a systematic shutdown and withdrawl of funding from the system until its eventual re-privatisation. The only problem is that the system is in such bad need of funds that private companies now running it don't want to invest and are simply milking it for all the money they can get - alphaxion
@Brian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - socialism and the industrial revolution almost went hand in hand in Europe. - Rene Wirtz
I'm holding out for those awesome European family friendly parks and museums - Erin @queenofspain
I'm just pissed I have to listen to this brainless sheep-driven socialism drivel for the next eight years. Baaahhh. Baaahhh. - AJ Kohn
@alphaxion: So, at least the government kept whatever lines were more or less profitable up and running, doing maintenance and planning. After privatization, the maintenance and planning part got dropped, since it is by far the most expensive, without having a clear ROI. Private companies are always gonna be looking at the bottom line and with a vast operation like a country-wide infrastructure to maintain it's not gonna look good. - Rene Wirtz
Rene -- I don't see any mention of most the countries in your list in that article. Is that the best information you have? - Brian Sullivan
Operating a profitable mass transit system within the US is difficult because of your wildly variable population density. Improving your archaic zoning system would be a good first step. - Steven Cains
Um..how come there's no mention of Amtrak? The challenge isn't just getting govt. to set up a mass transit system but also getting folks to use it. There's a lot of competition from alternative forms of transportation like planes and automobiles. Let's not forget that every time the gas prices go down, public interest in using public transportation goes down as well. - MiaD
@Brian: I'm sure I can find all of them, but I'm too tired and lazy to google at the moment. You can believe me or not, either way, the US is not even near to what they think is socialism. - Rene Wirtz
Child care for new moms. Doctors who pay house calls. Three months vacations. Sign me up. - Martha
We're building light rail in the Dallas area. The problem is getting to the rail stations and finding a place to park. They closed the route that went right past our house - on a main road! The parking lot is clogged with cars from cities to the north that don't pay transit taxes. We can't use our own trains! - Julie Barrett from twhirl
Do socialist countries also get high-speed rail? The US could really use a good high-speed rail network. - KyleHase from twhirl
we have been trying to get light rail in Kansas City forever. - Rodney Taylor
that's just it tho, "British Rail" as it was when it was nationalised barely put any money into the system at all and only grudgingly did any maintentance. No upgrades were made, no investment in new rolling stock. It was a total shambles. Stations fell into disrepair and entire routes were left to rot or were ripped up. - alphaxion
(There is a story making the rounds of a pool reporter on Air Force One who asked President Obama, "Are you a socialist?" ... we offer some context for that reporter, and any others that might be lurking here on a beautiful Sunday evening.) http://www.dailykos.com/storyon... - i thought this was really cool, and thought that it might settle this subject once and for all - - Chris Heath
chris - way to avoid any position at all. +1 for a completely empty statement. You implied that a 0% cap gains rate created a China that is a net creditor nation. Or would you like to tap dance out of that position ad well? - Brian Roy
Hey, you decided to go ad hominem... I just pointed out the error I your thinking... Not sure I was in attack mode. Care to answer the question? Is China being a creditior nation a direct result of a 0% cap gains rate? - Brian Roy
Were some comments deleted? Can't figure out what Brian Roy was responding to. - Morton Fox
nah I posted on the wrong thread. My bad. - Brian Roy
Hong Kong's transit system is something too! :D - Michael Forian
I'm from Europe and now am living in NYC. I find that NYC public transit (subways, buses, taxis) is actually fairly decent by my European standards. Sure, it's sometimes dirty and crowded, but it gets you to places and runs with good frequency. If you live in the city close to the transit, you don't need to have a car at all. - Jaanus Kase
Ha ha.. wonderful perspective - even the Democrats are so far right of centre in European terms to be ever be called Socialists. - Ian D. Nock
@Ian: *highfive* I keep saying that, too, but no-one believes me! A lot of Americans equate the Democratic Party with socialism, while I was taught in school that in the US you can choose between right and extreme right. - Rene Wirtz
Believe me, Robert, you don't want these. I'm from Hungary and I know what I'm talking about. Social healthcare sucks... Even if you live a totally healthy life, you pay the same insurance as those who smoke and drink all day long. (And get the same service) - Berci Mesko, MD
people who have not experienced socialized services do not get it. They Idealize them! - Leonard Boord
@Berci Mesko and those who drive and those who eat too much or badly, exercise too little, have sport injuries, unprotected sex, have dangerous and stressful jobs etc if we start thinking in those terms not many people would be entitled to healthcare at all. Personally I prefer not to judge and have universal healthcare combined with decent education and prevention plans - M F
I am from the government I am here to cure you.... - Leonard Boord
Just a question: Is it really true that the current system in the US means that people who take care of themselves and use little healthcare don't subsidize those who are less healthy? Given the high costs of basic insurance I find that almost impossible to believe but it would be interesting to know some facts especially when these 'socialized' vs 'whatever we call it' comparisons are being made. - Robin Barooah
@Robin: as far as I know everyone has Medicare tax withheld form their paycheck even if they are not insured throug Medicare. (I may be wrong though.) - Rene Wirtz
@M F: I understand, but having universal healthcare means you get an average service no matter how hard you work in life. Nurses, doctors have an incredibly low income compared to those working in the US. The whole system is far overloaded and nobody has time for you. I know there are serious problems in the US healthcare system as well, but I don't think you really want socialized medicine. Though, you should give it a try yourself. :) - Berci Mesko, MD
From what I have experienced (I grew up in the UK, and now live in the US) neither 'ideological extreme' is particularly great. There are some aspects of healthcare that make it difficult to run from a purely capitalistic perspective - i.e. accidents happen to even the most careful people, demand can potentially be infinite, etc, and at the point of use there is no market and consumers are vulnerable... - Robin Barooah
...and there are aspects that make it difficult to run from a purely 'socialized' perspective - i.e. a lowest common denominator service may limit quality of life unfairly, those who take care of themselves end up responsible for those who don't, demand is potentially infinite, metrics are hard and medical decisions become politicized etc. - Robin Barooah
To me this means that our tools are too blunt to solve the problem as one thing. Either we need more sophisticated tools (which I don't see), or the complex problem needs to be broken down into simpler ones that we can solve with out blunt tools (which I think is eminently possible). I believe that Obama is sophisticated enough to recognize this. Whether or not he can implement it given the vested interests he has to work with is the real test. - Robin Barooah
In the 19th century, the US built an incredible rail system that tied the nation together, all with private money. The entrepreneurs are now called "Robber Barons". It's little wonder that private enterprises doesn't want to step up again. - Robert Hafer
@Berci Mesko I live in Britain, I'm familiar with a national health service free to the point of service, with all its faults.Having said that I don't want to put my health and trust in the hands of a company that thinks about its profit first, I don't want them to do unnecessary procedures when I have plenty of money (as has had happened in some private clinics in Europe) and deny me care when I need it the most. And I don't want anyone else to be in that position. - M F
what is interesting -- how many people have opinions on socialism/socialists, while context they mention reveals they have either little or no clue about true socialism and how those historical examples of *socialism* were far from schoolbook definitions... and then-love-now-hate from ex-little-cousins in Central Europe looks like they hasn't learned lessons of history, rather go the opposite way (hint - negation is not productive and helps only in very short term). - A.T.
@M-F and Berci: some countries in Western Europe have adopted a two tiered system: 1) base care, including prevention, pharmaceuticals and dental, for everyone (everyone pays for it, everyone can benefit from it) and 2) for an extra premium you can add more specialized items to the base insurance, like private hospital rooms or extended dental plan or prolonged manual therapy. This way, everyone has the same base insurance coverage and for those who can afford it, they can get a better or broader coverage. - Rene Wirtz
@alphaxion Europe is a lot more compact than the US. so don't hold your breath about getting a transit system for everyone. Health care is so expensive because of insurance. Our economic system is a house of cards - one that is on the verge of tumbling down. More government is never a solution; it always adds to the problems. Real solution is growing food & shopping locally, supporting communities, decentralizing. That is in OUR best interest but not the best interests of the global economy's plutocracy. - Internet Strategist
Transit is partially affected by population density, exclusive of politics. The western U.S. differs greatly from Europe, though I will grant that European nations discourage auto use more, thus incentivizing mass transit. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
I should clarify that I was talking about intercity travel, not intracity travel (though the same issues apply to southern California - who's gonna build a rail line connecting Ontario to Orange County?). - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
Time for high speed rail from San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, too San Diego. - ka3drr
Robert Scoble
How to find the best #SXSW parties. Details/discussion here:
http://upcoming.yahoo.com/tag... is the list of every event tagged with SXSW. My own calendar is here: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... The Official SXSW party planner is here: http://sxsw2009.sched.org/ - Robert Scoble
The reason you should use Upcoming is because you can tell popularity of each party. Make sure you notice that people can mark that they are attending each party or that they simply are "interested." Lots of people, like me, list that they are interested on tons of parties. It's the "attend" votes you want to go for. - Robert Scoble
The other reason you should use Upcoming is because you can tell who is going to each party. Your friends are probably already onto what parties are best. So use them. Here's an example: - Robert Scoble
For instance, I know from past experience that Tantek (the guy who did the IE browser for the Macintosh and helped come up with microformats) is the kind of guy I like hanging out with. So, I go to his Upcoming page http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... and see what he's attending. Anything he's going to I'll probably like too. - Robert Scoble
If you don't have any friends in the industry, here's a few of the best if you're a geeky type (I'll come back with a bunch of names, just stick around): - Robert Scoble
Scott Beale (Laughing Squid). Last year he made his own parties happen via Twitter. And he bought everyone beer. Basically everyone goes where Scott goes because he's a cool guy who throws great parties (if you ever get to attend his parties in SF, go, they are always very cool): http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... - Robert Scoble
Nicole Simon. She comes from Germany every year and she's always at the coolest parties. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... - Robert Scoble
Steve Garfield. He's the videobloggers video blogger. If you want to hang out with cool types like Gary Vaynerchuk and Veronica, Steve probably will be the one to follow. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... - Robert Scoble
Rachel Clarke: she's a web marketing expert coming from UK. Every year I see her at the best parties. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... Of course she's attending the great British Boozeup: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Hi Robert, this is great. I will be in Austin for the first time. This will help a lot. It would be fun to have something like a feed tied into each location, that one could track in FF. - Bastian
Ewan Spence: every year he's seen wearing a kilt (he comes from Scotland). One year he bought me a bottle of Scotch Whiskey. We drank it on the spot, of course, which made him one of my favorite people to party with. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... - Robert Scoble
I'm stuck here in Toronto instead of being able to go to SXSW, and this is making me wish more and more that I could attend. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
++++++If picking out cool people doesn't help you, then pick out the cool events. Here's my favorites. Note, you might need to bribe your way into some of these.+++++++ - Robert Scoble
BarCamp. The standard. The one where I met Ze Frank and Matt Mullenweg at the same table. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
The Big Digg Shindig. You know you want to go: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Make Magazine Party. Make is for people who like making things. Fit you? You'll be put to work here. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Facebook. I judge a party by how hard it is to get into. Last year I had to try twice to get my friends into this party. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... Zuckerberg told me he probably won't be there this year, though. - Robert Scoble
Wordpress. Come on, nothing cooler than Matt Mullenweg's crew. Represent! http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Google Reader/Blogger. OK, last year the Google party's line was so long we Twittered and started our own party with Scott Beale. Next year we're going to be smarter and get to this one early. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Brightkite. I'll bet you'll know where this party will be. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
Mashable. Chris Brogan is going to the Mashable party, so you know it'll be social. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
SXNW (South By NorthWest) geek party. One of the most popular. For good reason. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... Betsy Weber and Robert Scales, along with 318 other geeks will be there. - Robert Scoble
Someday I am going to SXSW, too busy this year with the Peterson's data center move project. But as I learn and engage more on the Social Media front, I need step up my understanding and my contact list :) - Susan Beebe
Rackspace. One way to pick out the parties is to know who has the most to spend and to gain. Rackspace had an IPO last year and is looking to build a brand around its cloud computing services, so this one is one I'm looking forward to. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... - Robert Scoble
If you can't attend SXSW you gotta watch http://www.ustream.tv/sxsw -- lots of music and smart people on from a decked out hotel. I'll be on most evenings at about 5 p.m. Central Time/6 p.m. Pacific Time. - Robert Scoble
But not a single high quality live video stream, which is a shame. - Richard A.
Richard: we'll be pushing out live video. I will also try to Qik or Kyte some stuff too. Stay tuned to Twitter. Usually someone sticks up a live stream of some stuff. - Robert Scoble
I'm tired of low quality video. I want well produced content with good sound, good lighting, something that's not a pain to watch. By now the infrastructure should be in place. - Richard A.
Patricia: if you think parties don't have business value then I gotta tell you you are doing them wrong. A friend went to a party at TED, met a VC, and walked away with six million dollars. If that's not business value, then I don't know what is. To say you get "nothing" out of a week hanging out with the best web experts and entrepreneurs in the world tells me your friend really has no clue, sorry. People like that SHOULD stay home. - Robert Scoble
But there's lots at SXSW that have nothing to do with parties. Visit http://sxsw2009.sched.org and see the kinds of sessions that are there. - Robert Scoble
Patricia, many of the top geeks from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Rackspace and many others will be there. That's who I'll be hanging out with. The kinds of people I've been pointing out here are the kinds: Tantek is one of the top programmers in the world. The CTO of Amazon is going to be there. Etc Etc. - Robert Scoble
But I really don't care. The hotels are all sold out, this is going to be even bigger than last year, so I'm sure we won't miss you if you decide there's no value there. Obviously someone thinks there's some value. - Robert Scoble
@Robert, what an odd thing to say. I don't know if there's value or not. I'm trying to figure it out. I hear mixed things. It's certainly not intended in some negative way - I am asking because I need to sift out if it's a smart move or not. - Patricia
Patricia: it's an odd thing because it's an odd question and an odd stance by your friend. If someone came back from ANY event and said he got nothing out of it I'd fire him or try to get him out of my life. That's the lamest thing I've ever heard. - Robert Scoble
And I don't care because you SHOULD stay home and watch me on http://www.upcoming.org/sxsw -- if you come you'll probably end up talking to someone interesting at a party instead of watching our cool show. :-) - Robert Scoble
Patricia: even that is extremely lame. I don't go to an event if I don't know who will be there and if I need to meet certain people I make an appointment ahead of time or I don't go. This person should be fired if that's how she approaches events (or, at minimum, never allowed to go on the road again because she obviously has no clue about how to spend the company's money). - Robert Scoble
Patricia: scary. I probably wouldn't stay employed by such a person if she came back from an event and told me something so lame. - Robert Scoble
Robert, understood. but it is true that some events just aren't a fit. in her category, SXSW wouldn't more than likely have the type of people she needs to meet. if anything it may have been better for her to sample 2 days or so to start and see versus going all week. - Patricia
Patricia: I bet she didn't look at Upcoming.org before spending all that money and time to go to an event. If she had, she probably would have been able to see that the people who attend the event aren't her kind of people. - Robert Scoble
Heck, about 1065 people are listed here on the SXSW Upcoming event page: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... -- you can very quickly troll around and figure out what kind of people are attending the event. There's no excuse anymore for attending an event that you don't have some affinity for. Plus, add into this the http://sxsw2009.sched.org and you can see all the sessions. I still say that's the lamest thing I've ever heard, though. I could attend a plumbing convention and get SOME value out of it. - Robert Scoble
Robert, thank you. You helped me a ton here. I have a good idea of how to approach the conference and definitely appreciate all your insight!! - Patricia

No. Way. - LogEx
-nuff said....or not said. I don't want any more snowballs thrown at me...PLEASE! - Jennifer Windrum
Yeah, all that crap is pretty annoying. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
and you people complain about a little chapstick and lips every now and again. sheesh. I'd much rather see chapstick and lips any day of the week over getting a "crush jason alexmi" request or getting *two* sammy is sexy requests in the same day! - Thomas Hawk
=O - Shevonne
You know you can turn that off right? - Eric P
hahahahhaa - Shevonne
horrible - andy brudtkuhl
OUCCCCH (E.T. Voice) - sean percival
no doubt. i'm always blocking apps. i don't want play around with hatchlings or pieces of flair or get involved in any dang food fights. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
That right there is the biggest reason I can't stand Facebook and I would dump it in a heartbeat if it didn't mean that all of my family and distant friends would instantly have a shitfit. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Also - Facebook = "Real life Friends". If you only friend people you're actually friends with it's actually a terrific application for keeping in touch. If you try to treat it like a Friendfeed/Twitter/MySpace then you wind up with a load of crap and its utility takes a nose dive. - Eric P
PREACH!! - Derrick
thankfully i've avoided this kind of garbage - chrisofspades
I block just about every app invite I get. I'm glad some people like it, but I despise ANY application, social network, or whatever that the second step in adding the app is to SPAM all of my friends with it. This is a terrible process and needs to be done away with. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I didn't add them. They are invitations. - Thomas Hawk
Totally agree with you. couldn't have said it better. - Karoli
Sean hit it perfectly. It's why I use Facebook as nothing more than an address book for people from my past. That has always made me sick, screen 2 is "Tell me who to spam!" - Matthew DeVries
@Haggis: Agreed. And I too block pretty much every app invite I get. The irritating part is when someone gets all uppity with me because I didn't return their snowball or superpoke them back. I'm like...srsly? You send me that ridiculous crap and then have the nerve to get mad at ME for not participating? - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I am blocking most apps, because things can get outta hand ... - Rene Wirtz
@Amanda: I tell/have told all my friends that they can send those requests, but that I categorically deny all of them. It's surprising how that already decreases the number of requests. - Rene Wirtz
I do get tired of all that crap. My bro sent me a video to watch on Farcebook a few days ago, but to see it I would have to download yet another silly wall. I don't need more than one, nor do I need to install multiple calendars so you can see when my birthday is. Go to my profile. - Ian May
For every app invite i block, i seem to get twice as many the following day. Its better now their not all over people profiles pages when they do get added though. - Simon Wicks
Thomas - I think you're really gettign confused between Facebook and these leeches trying to suck off the Facebook platform. Just ignore them and these requests would never appear. Or better yet - DEfriend anyone who would be so stupid as to include you on a list of requests. JUST DUMP THEM - and everything will be fine. - Marc Canter
But seriously...you really should accept my Pirates vs. Ninjas request. - Adam
You're just waaaay too popular, Tom ;-) - Dave Fortheloss
Yep. I put a moratorium on adding apps and made that abundantly clear, but I still get all the cr@p. - Julie Barrett from twhirl
this is just one example of the silliness and boring nature of facebook. Frankly it's just not engaging. There's so much wrong with it and this is just the start. FriendFeed is a far superior platform for probably 100 different reasons. - Thomas Hawk
I have found that blocking invites from certain users and applications is very helpful. - Adam
@Thomas I agree with you 100%. I think FB is near unusable.. You're right it's not engaging - it's more of a distraction and there's very little value proposition for me to connect with people. I get the same with email/IM/flickr.. FF is far superior in my estimation - andy brudtkuhl
that's just crazy! insane! crazy?...insane? - .LAG liked that
Holy crap and I cry when I see 3 of them on my bar. - Admiral Anika
Just looked at this and confirmed that I have no interest in joining Facebook. - TranceMist
I'm not a fan of the tons of virtual goods and apps either, but I've got tons of friends who would qualify as "normal people" and cannot imagine living without FB. It's a rich way for them to keep in touch with people. I like FF a bunch but I also recognize the bandwagon effect that exists with FB. - Cecyl Hobbs
A picture is worth a 1000 words. - Eric Logan
*Brain cramp* - Shey, Jamaican of FF
HOLY FRAKKIN' FRAK - Josh Haley
Sweet baby Jesus - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I've just been blocking all Facebook apps. - Morton Fox
Are you shitting me? wow I don't even get that much action on Facebook. - Patrick from twhirl
INSANE Bro! - Francis Aldana
@Morton Fox: I do the same. Problem is that you have to opt out of each crappy app that anyone you know has managed to dig up. If you don't log in often and deal with these head-on, the simple act of opting out can be daunting. - Keith McCammon
It's striking how many people hate Facebook who nevertheless for various reasons feel unable to abandon it -- not so much a virus as a fungus. It's depressing to think that due to network lock-in my daughter may be stuck on it for years to come. - Tim Ostler
something will come along to replace it. it's the inevitability of things. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
I don't get why people who don't like apps don't block them all, or why people who do like them feel the need to send invites to everyone, let alone whine that you haven't accepted. Most apps I use have a button that shows your friends with the app, and I only send to those. - Alix Whitmire
@Keith IIRC there's a greasemonkey script that lets you block them all at once. - Alix Whitmire
Yep. Stuff like that's why I get the heebie jeebies about 5-10 mins after logging into Facebook. - Susan A. Kitchens
Ahhhhhh, the voice of reason! I'm so glad I'm not alone. - Rob Fahrni
RT yourself from June 2008? - ThePicMan

aw man, what happened to the flickr image? - Kamilah Gill
yep, I just IGNORE these types of apps/notifications- I have SO many sent to me and I would literally need to quite my job to attend to them full-time. It's insane. I think 95% of them are a waste of time imho... there are always going to be those people who love to do the spamming but it doesn't mean you need to pay attention to them :) One part of FB that I also do not love. - Deanna Belle Govoni
This is one of the big reasons why I try and limit friends to people I know in person, and a few others who I can trust to not act like invite-wielding idiots. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
that's crazy! - K.D.
Why would you blame facebook for you having idiot friends? - Richard Lawler
Who ever said Facebook is cool? It's a rambling mess suitable only for people with lots of spare time and nothing else to do with it. - Todd Brunner from twhirl
shit like that is what makes me hate FB. they need an option saying "please auto ignore all invites from everyone". i used to have a greasemonkey script which did it, but the bloody things are getting smarter - Terry O'Fee
Richard: Who said I have idiot friends? Intelligence has nothing to do with people trying to share their fave FB apps with everyone else, especially before Facebook put in limitations to keep apps from spamming their users' friends. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Thing is, once burned, twice shy. So only people I can trust to not send me lots of invites get to be friended to me on Facebook. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
it's just some people. i know great people who forward every single email online. there's one person, ive given her an old yahoo email adress so i dont hurt her feelings :P - Terry O'Fee
Smart people catch on to spamming apps quickly, they recognize when they've been spammed, instead of signing up and passing them along, or continuing to request you join (insert game of the week.) If your friends can't figure out what's annoying to you, how can you expect Facebook to? - Richard Lawler
immediately block app requests as they come in! according to the picture there were not so many apps involved here, but blocking them from the beginning on spares you more invitations.. - Johannan Edelman
I thought my FaceBook was bad when requests piled up, but you definitely win! I don't feel quite so irritated about it, now ;o) - Seth Greenblatt
Yeah, that's one thing I hate about FB, those cutesy apps. I almost never participate in that... - Rick Cogley
Try Facebuprofen. - david beckwith

WOAH! You know, I think it is funny, I removed ALL my apps the other day, AND told all my friends that I removed my apps, and they are STILL sending me app invites. If you keep up on it, it's fine. If you don't, it looks like this... /sigh - Danielle Closs

Use http://www.ignoreall.com/ Cleans up everything in a jiffy. - Jauder Ho
I like FF for commenting on stories and seeing a discussion. I like FB for smaller discussions. FF bigest minus for me is the lack of a notification if someone specifically responds to me. - ChiliMac
Agree with ChiliMac. - Aman
That's a big list... I'm getting tired of hitting the ignore as well. - Gary Gifford Jr
Believe me, even a good confrontation with those slimy friends does do any good. They keep sending invites even after that. - Aman
I'd be a rich man if if I got a penny for everytime I click ignore. I'm just not making that much use out Facebook nowadays! That's why I decided to give FriendFeed a test trial. - Vincent Nguyen
This is why they made the block function, I've blocked over 500 applications and I don't get many requests anymore. I promise, it works. - Aaron Myers
It looks like facebook just threw up on your screen, IGNORE ALL!! And back away slooowly... - Peter To
I don't get it. I have 600+ friends on FB (not crazy huge, but not an insubstantial number). About once a week, I do a combo of ignore-app's and ignore-all-apps from a few friends, and voila! In about 1-2 minutes, I'm all set. 1-2 minutes a week. How many friends do you have on FB, Thomas? And how many years has it been since you've cleared things out? While I think FB shares some of the blame, is this situation any different than not cleaning *anything else* out once in a while? - Adam Lasnik

Southern California mayor to resign after e-mailing picture of watermelons on White House lawn - Inside Bay Area - http://www.insidebayarea.com/oakland...
"LOS ALAMITOS, — The mayor of a small Orange County city says he will resign after being criticized for sharing an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year." Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose issued a statement Thursday saying he is sorry and will step down as mayor at the City Council meeting on March 2. Grose came under fire for sending the picture to what he called "a small group of friends." One of the recipients, a local businesswoman and city volunteer, publicly scolded the mayor for his actions. Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

Stupidity needs to be physically painful. - tehNewYear
Man, people really can't help themselves, can they? Looking forward to 30 years from now when incidents like this are a memory. - Hutch Carpenter
Attention to my small group of friends: Yeah, I've told a racist joke now and again, being a polack, I've also been the butt of them, but please, for bob's sake don't send me shit like this! Especially if you have a high profile job of leadership. You can't trust me to keep it secret. - Matthew DeVries
no shortage a short minded racists in OC. good riddance. - sean percival
i actually got into an argument with a few at work this morning over this. They saw absolutely nothing wrong with this and felt that this mayor should not lose his job over this. Needless to say that the discussion did not last long. Its easy for me to win an argument when there is blatant ignorance involved. - Carlos Ayala
For god sakes people, don't email anything you won't what on the national news...God! - John Flynn
way to try and downplay one's ignorance and stupidity. that kind of stuff isn't in "poor taste," it's flat out racist! racism is much more complex and extreme than a matter of one's taste. there's been a lot of things going down in cali lately with regard to the way many in the GOP are handling their business. their politics seemed to have become more extreme and/or shameless, if not reckless - Cee Bee
+1 Cee Bee - Hutch Carpenter
I don't think racism is the right word for this, but the words stupidity and ignorance sure don't go far enough. - Anthony Citrano
There are degrees of racism, but I'd still call this racism. - Kevin Fox
My favorite part, from an AP story: "Grose . . . said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons." Wow, what an unfortunate coincidence that he just HAPPENED to photoshop in Watermelons. - John Craft
Yeah, racism is the right word for this. - vicster is...
i don't know man, i disagree that it's not racism. an image of watermelons on the white house lawn conjures up images from an era when that kind of stuff was commonplace and hardly meant as a way to honour the people who were subjects of that very imagery. some people still want to believe it's ok or even funny in a benign way to pull that shit nowadays, but would those people be so quick to send that email to the NAACP instead of what they think is their protected group of peers? - Cee Bee
Typical. :| - Brandon
@John It was just an unfortunate coincidence! ;) - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Conjuring up images of racism in others is not the same as racism. I don't think it's benign and I don't think it's funny (except to laugh at this idiot.) What I'm saying is that joking about - or even perpetuating - a particular ethnic or racial stereotype is not res ipsa loquitur racism. - Anthony Citrano
I'm pretty sure that perpetuating a racial stereotype is in fact by definition racism. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I agree with Tina. You don't have to provide original, unique content for it to constitute racism. A racially motivated derogatory act is racism whether the act is one of content creation or of dissemination. - Kevin Fox
Define it however you wish, I was just saying it does not meet mine. - Anthony Citrano
It appears that the actual definition and the usage of the word racism is very much a hot topic. I was raised to believe that committing an act of racism is to actively discriminate against an individual or group based on their race and/or racial stereotypes attributed to that race. It appears that the more modern definition is broader, however, and includes the perpetuation of racial stereotypes. - Jeanette Bosman
"What I'm saying is that joking about a particular ethnic or racial stereotype is not res ipsa loquitur racism." - If you're poking fun at the stereotype, perhaps. But I grew up in the rural South, and creating and forwarding an image like that "innocently" is par for the course in Mississippi, Alabama, etc. - John Craft
I look at it this way, Anthony. If I'm having dinner with someone and they spend the entire night saying black people like fried chicken and water melon, Irish people are drunks, Gypsies are all out to cheat you, Italians are all mobsters, etc., I am without doubt going to think that person is a racist, based purely on the fact that they are perpetuating racial stereotypes. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
If we're seriously not willing to acknowledge this is racism, then 30 years is no where near long enough for this kind of crap to go away. - Victor Ganata
Anthony, what's your definition of racism? In your view can racism be "passive" like this, or must it be "active" - i.e. discrimination? - John Craft
so I wonder who all of the other people on the distribution list of this email were that didn't do anything about it. - Thomas Hawk
But Tina - those are *stereotypes* - those do not imply the *inferiority* of one ethnicity. Liking fried chicken does not, prima facie, make you inferior to those who do not like fried chicken. Likewise, watermelon-dislikers are not, prima facie, superior to watermelon-likers. Perpetuating mythology, however stupid, doesn't automatically mean you think the group is inferior. Believing a group is inferior *because* of their lineage is racism. Believing (or joking) that they prefer a certain food is not. - Anthony Citrano
Which is to say, Tina, I agree that your hypothetical dinner guests are idiots. But I don't think - based on the evening banter you've described - I'd define them as racists. (Although they may be..) - Anthony Citrano
@John - in my mind, racism is believing that a certain ethnic or racial group are inferior in some way, based purely on their lineage. - Anthony Citrano
Anthony, I think it's still racist to believe that all black people play basketball really well, or that all Asians are really good at math. It's the act of generalizing to a population based on nothing but appearance that's offensive, and when it's entrenched as a society-wide belief, it's oppressive even though at first glance it may look complimentary. - Victor Ganata
Perhaps think of it this way: If you see a human and believe a certain thing about this human soley because of the ethnic heritage of this human, you are a racist. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I don't think ANYONE is implying that what this man did wasn't racially motivated. The debate is about the definition of the word racism, and what kind of act the word implies. I believe (and others have as well) that this particular act is and example of "racial stereotyping" not "racism" which I define as incorporating a belief that a specific race is inferior to another. As Anthony has stated, a perceived affinity for watermelon does not label one as inferior. - Jeanette Bosman
Just to be clear, I also believe that racial stereotyping is just as harmful as racism, but I do believe the two acts to be differently defined. - Jeanette Bosman
Dude, if "the pedantic parsing of words is not at all impressive to" you, then feel free not to comment on it. That is what the bulk of this conversation has been about. If you want to rant about how terrible racism is, feel free, but don't suffer under the impression that you'll be saying anything that hasn't already been said thousands of times. YES, racism sucks, its terrible, I hope to see a day when it no longer plagues our society... blah blah blah. Tell me something new. - Jeanette Bosman
I'm trying to think how best to put this, Anthony, so I'm likely to not get it right and someone else please feel free to step in. The watermelon/fried chicken thing doesn't actually *mean* anything derogatory. However, there was a time (quite recent) where it was used to imply things, a code of sorts. Those stereotypes were used *in conjunction with others* such as laziness,... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I happen to enjoy debating the definition of the word because it gets people to really think about what they are saying and what they are meaning and how the two might contrast. We're having fun being all intellectual and stuff, don't rain on our parade just because you don't find it interesting. - Jeanette Bosman
Watermelon/fried chicken = a socioeconomic knock on African Americans... How is that not derogatory? - Brandon
chris: scott does seem pretty ornery. - Oldengrey (Jay)
Scott, if you find it interesting, then join the debate. So far you have contributed nothing. - Jeanette Bosman
Chris - I've never been blocked as far as I know - excited at the prospect! - Jeanette Bosman
I got blocked once. It was cool. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Scott, that isn't bullying, its called critical thinking. Try it. - Jeanette Bosman
Whoa, I posted before I saw your reply Chris. I'm glad to see I've hit the nail on its head. - Jeanette Bosman
YES! That was fun, who's next? - Jeanette Bosman
"I think you're wrong. If you try to tell me why you might not be wrong I won't tolerate hearing it and will berate you for trying to say it. If you criticize me for that I will tell you that I can say whatever I please and I pass judgment on you for trying to imply that I can't." Wow... - Kevin Fox
<3 Jeanette and Kevin :) (EDIT: different kinds of <3 for the two of you. sheesh.) - Tudor Bosman
/me gets out the popcorn - Alex Scoble
Wait, did he just discriminate against me because of my beliefs? :P - Jeanette Bosman
OOOOH MY GOOOOD! What a jerk!!! unbelievable!! - Susan Beebe
Fine, let's say for the purpose of discussion there really is a difference between racism and racial stereotyping. What do you believe is the practical consequence of this difference? - Victor Ganata
Ah, racism is alive and well in America. - Blake Caldwell
I dunno, Blake. Perhaps discussing it, even at this vitriolic level, is a step down the path of healing? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I stand with Jeanette (and not only because I'm going to marry her in 5 months...) Racism is actively discriminating against a person or group based on race, and should be against the law. Perpetuating racial stereotypes is idiotic and I won't associate with people who do, but it's an exercise of free speech. You're free to believe anything you want and talk about it until it comes to actions -- preferring to hire white people instead of black people just because of their race, for example. - Tudor Bosman
But this is all nitpicking. The mayor of Los Alamitos is a bigoted f*cktard, regardless of the result of a debate over a dictionary definition :) - Tudor Bosman
What you say, Tudor, rings true, however, it also stands to resign that this mayor violated the public trust by emailing the offensive picture and rightly was forced to resign. - Alex Scoble
Damn, you were too quick on the draw with your second statement. - Alex Scoble
No one is saying it isn't free speech, Tudor. Of course it is: Americans have the right to say whatever stupid thing that crosses their mind (yes, aware of fire in a theater exceptions all, thank you). But that doesn't mean those things they say aren't racist or sexist just because they don't act on them. That' be like saying a man who says "All women should stay at home barefoot and pregnant" isn't actually a sexist unless he *makes* women stay at home barefoot and pregnant. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Tina: What if he just forwards a photo of Sara Palin, barefoot and pregnant? - Kevin Fox
Screw the dictionary definition. I want to know what you think the practical upshot of acknowledging the difference is. Fine, racial stereotyping is free speech. But so is racism to a degree. The Klan, for example, has the lawful right to march in the streets provided they obtain the proper permits. But this does not get us any closer to solving the problem of race in America. - Victor Ganata
@ Victor, practical consequence... hmm, I think in general there is a practical consequence for calling anything by its specific name. That is sort of what words and language are for - to convey an image or a feeling or an idea - and I like to do so as carefully, specifically, and descriptively as possible. It is especially wise to do so when discussing hot-button topics such as this one. - Jeanette Bosman
I'll say it: Racism isn't the problem. The *consequences* of racism are why racism is bad. Racial stereotypes foster racism and racism fosters discriminatory behavior, and the boundaries between each of these steps is contestable and blurry, so what's the point of making a distinction? - Kevin Fox
This has become the Happy Hour topic on FF. In summary... Mayor resigns. Racism bad. Scott Bourne needs a vacation. Chris and Jeanette need a drink. Happy weekend everyone! - Eric Thompson
Of course, word definitions evolve and change as surely as modern society changes their beliefs. This is how new languages are born, and also the reason why British English sounds different than American English. - Jeanette Bosman
I mean, am I taking something for granted when I find it obvious that thoughts facilitate actions? To flip it around a little, if it's OK to think these things, why is it not OK to act on them? What is it, then, that prevents you from taking your thoughts to their final conclusions, or at least stops you from acting on those conclusions? - Victor Ganata
The other thing is that if you invoke a symbol, you pull down the baggage associated with that symbol. While I could, with clear conscience, draw a swastika and claim that I'm expressing a Buddhist belief and nothing else, I think it would be ridiculous for me to expect that no one would find it offensive in the context of Western civilization. That symbol is weighed down with history now. So it's the same thing, really, when you're talking about watermelons and monkeys in the context of race. - Victor Ganata
Jeanette, I'm not arguing the nature of language, nor the importance of precision. I'm saying, in the context of the history of racism, what difference does it make if, in the end, whatever you call it, a person ends up applying an unwanted generalization onto another individual? To me, it is that act itself that is oppressive, and to me, it is from that act that the history of racism arises as a natural consequence. - Victor Ganata
Chris, I agree that the monkey brouhaha is a lot more equivocal, but I still stand by the idea that you end up owning the baggage attached to a symbol whether you want to or not. Communication is never unilateral. - Victor Ganata
Chris, that's fair. Context is important. Yes, not everyone agrees that it's harmless even in the comedy, but certainly it's seen as more acceptable than just randomly accosting someone with a stereotype on the street or in their inbox. But to me, the difference seems to be in the effect, rather than in the nature of the behavior itself. It's really the same behavior, it's just that the context is different, and that mitigates its effects. - Victor Ganata
To me, ethnic comedy is still racist, it's just not as bad. Mostly because it's coming from someone whom you shouldn't be expected to take seriously. - Victor Ganata
“I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write" Voltaire - Joe K
Victor: If I'm understanding your question correctly, I believe I already addressed this waaaaay further up in this thread. To quote myself: "Just to be clear, I also believe that racial stereotyping is just as harmful as racism, but I do believe the two acts to be differently defined." I agree that both acts are oppressive, and both acts perpetuate the view that we are all SO different from each other > which creates the us/them mentality > which is where all bigotry comes from. - Jeanette Bosman
Not hiding, Scott. Stick to the bird slideshows. They seem more in keeping with your intellect. - Oldengrey (Jay)
@Tina - you put it well, and I absolutely hear you. @Jeanette - exactly! if we are just going to wave our hands and say ‘let's nevermind what words mean’ then why bother communicating. And finally, where's Robin when we need him, so he can call us all racists (or tell us we're not qualified to discuss it)? - Anthony Citrano
My sexist parallel for this thread: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Anthony Citrano
Wow, Scott. Looking through your comments and posts you and I have very similar ideologies, yet the way you express them and treat others alienates you from even those people 'on your side'. I don't know if you're interested in advancing the causes you believe in but I hope not because the way you espouse opinions seems to drive everyone away. This isn't meant as an attack, but rather... more... - Kevin Fox
Scott - then why are you contributing your opinion, since clearly you are not looking to communicate or open to discussions. What is calling people out going to achieve? Baffling. - Mona Nomura
Scott: What we have here is a contested concept of the term 'racism'. People in this thread are using more specific terms like 'racial intolerance' to deepen the discussion of the subject to more than just blanket "he's a racist, good riddance" kneejerkery, instead delving into issues like motivation and intent, ideally to bring the discussion on how to help fix the problem of racial... more... - Kevin Fox
I understand where you are coming from but defensive exchanges mostly end by resorting to personal attacks and derails the topic at hand. I admire your passion and think you CAN do good even if you don't think you are good at this. :) BTW this has nothing to do with being cool or not, it's about basic human interactions, ScottBourne. ;) - Mona Nomura
Scott - have you ever wondered why some people become the way they are, or think the way the do? Just because people have differing opinions or definition of racism, it doesn't mean they are racist... No one is faulting you for how you feel, I think it has more to do with your communication methods. Don't you want to understand WHY the feel that way in order to reach deep down and solve the problem from the root? - Mona Nomura
Names shouldn't matter when you're engaged in discussions... especially on the Internet. Perhaps going into every thread and interacting with people imagining yourself at a Halloween cocktail party, may help? Pre-judging could be the reason you come off more hostile towards some, which more often times than not results to messy conversations. - Mona Nomura
@Scott: You're making snap judgments about the quality and worth of people based on highly superficial data about them (namely that they use the words 'racial intolerance' when you use the word 'racism'). Because you're doing it at an individual level you think it's justifiable but it's just as unacceptable as refusing to listen to someone based on the color of their skin. - Kevin Fox
To be fair, Kevin, the FF community is a little different from other sites and services. A lot of other places I've noticed you must start off defensive otherwise you are not taken seriously. I think this thread is a great chance for Scott to see why FF is a great place, among other things (ie: judging based on color of skin) - Mona Nomura
Scott -- I am confused -- who is that you think is hiding here? - Brian Sullivan
Scott: "basic human interactions seem impossible to me when you can use a fake name" This is ironic, since when you don't know who the person is you have to judge them by their words rather than your own prejudices. Do you see me differently than Jay because I use my real name and my real feeds? How is that not prejudiced? I don't know who Mona is in the 'real world' or even if that's... more... - Kevin Fox
Scott - there are many circumstances and reasons behind people using aliases. Especially for those that do not want to be Googled. FF indexes your activities... And please don't think we are ganging up on you. At least I'm not, I'm just trying to understand. - Mona Nomura
Scott - Kevin does have a valid point. How is you judging people by their handles (or aliases) any different from racists judging people by their skin colors? - Mona Nomura
Scott -- a quick check shows Oldengrey (Jay)= Jay Tannenbaum Pacific Ave & Presidio Ave -- unless that is not real as well. There are others in this thread whose pseudonyms are much more obscuring. - Brian Sullivan
Scott: I'm sorry that you see my words, as one of the more pragmatic participants in this discussion, as attacking you. Since any further conversation on the subject will, by your admission, only be seen as an attack and because it's clear that it won't better the situation, I'll leave you and your rejection to yourself. Good day, sir. - Kevin Fox
Brian - Jay has a private feed. - Mona Nomura
I have to conclude that ScottBourne is fake. No one can be that close minded, right? I have seriously never encountered anyone who is so blatantly close minded (and proud of it!) Isn't it exactly this kind of attitude that is behind all forms of bigotry? If you're not with me, you're against me! Kevin, your analogy to the communist era witch hunts is spot-on. - Jeanette Bosman
The information is public on Twitter http://twitter.com/oldengrey - Brian Sullivan
What is your definition of racism, Scott? Maybe we should start there... I am not giving up btw. Your passion is extremely admirable but racism is not black and white - literally. - Mona Nomura
@Chris somehow I did... Curious... And no, Mona and Scott are responding to each other. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
It's nice to see that Chris is back on the Pequod again. It's so reassuring seeing that people can't let shit go. - Matthew DeVries
Wow, don't my morning posts about McCarthyism look prescient. Shall we channel in the late, great gentlewoman from Maine? - Anthony Citrano
I truly hope people (specifically the ones I can not see) are not resorting to personal attacks. Scott? We are conversing fine. I'm here and I am interested in what you have to say. - Mona Nomura
@Kevin Haha. - Anne Bouey
We seem to be on the same page :) Now my question to you is: do you think you may be doing something similar judging someone based on their Internet nicknames? Specifically, treating them as if they are less than human, when in fact there is a person sitting behind the computer screen, typing out words. Cartoon? I thought this was over the picture of watermelons across the White House lawn -- unless you are referring to the NY Post cartoon from a week ago... - Mona Nomura
@Mona, to be fair, I think that "oldengray (jay)" is the only one he doesn't like because of his user name - and they seem to have some sort of history? In my case, I'm not exactly sure why he blocked me. I can't tell if it's because he doesn't understand the point I was trying to make or because word definitions really get him all hot and bothered. Maybe he just doesn't like being argued with as passionately as he argues. - Jeanette Bosman
@Jeanette why do you think he blocked me, then? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Oh, ok - I was under the impression perhaps it was with everyone that used handles. My mistake. Like I said, I admire Scott's passion greatly and it's refreshing since we live in a world that needs more empathy. @Scott - I hope I didn't offend you or think I am judging you. I am just trying to understand you and along the way, perhaps open your mind a little towards people on the Internet. :) Anyway, I have to go. My beau awaits. (Edward from Twilight - don't judge me, please!) - Mona Nomura
I'll gladly take a block since Scott seems to be handing them out like water. I find it sad that a perfectly good thread/discussion was hijacked by his antics. - Give 'Em DBizness
Well where do you think racism comes from? What do you think makes people judge others based upon the color of their skins? And there is no need to apologize, Scott! I just wanted to clarify to make sure we were on the same page. :) - Mona Nomura
Where are all your middle names!!?? And I thought I knew who you people were!?!! *runs with arms flailing behind him into the forest* - AJ Kohn
AJ, it's Helene - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Tina: I like that! Mine is a heavily guarded secret! :) In other news, while the semantics behind the definition and application of racism are deserving of attention I'd like to ensure we steer this group to the light. (Look for it!) This guy is a shit-for-brains moron for forwarding something that was clearly racially charged. Agreed? - AJ Kohn
@Chris: You've been on fire this last week my friend! - AJ Kohn
How does Scott even know who's using real names? Mona could be a "Lisa" in real life; Chris a "Benjamin", etc etc etc. - Andrew C
@Mark, I can't be certain, but I think it may have been your comment that discussing our differing opinions on racism, "even at this vitriolic level, is a step down the path of healing" (to clumsily paraphrase you). Clearly, that put you in the racist camp. - Jeanette Bosman
@Andrew: Exactly, hence my middle name missive. - AJ Kohn
Ahhh... Hadn't thought of that. Well, I'm in good company, nonetheless. Hiding behind my real name, and all... - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Oh yes, the cartoon thread! That was a barrel of laughs. What is with the whole blocking thing anyway? Why in the world would you want to limit your view and scope of the world that way? Maybe if, over a period of months, you thought to yourself "hey, this person just never says anything valuable and they just get me riled up for no reason" maybe then I could see the advantage to blocking someone. But really? After a couple of heated exchanges? Wow, how boring do you want your life to be? - Jeanette Bosman
I agree, Jeanette. I subscribe to a number of people because they have opposing views. The discussions help me focus and learn. I think some people subscribe to me for the same reason. If you only listen to people who agree with you then you will die of atrophy in your own echo chamber. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Jeanette, very well said. But that's how most people are, sadly. - Anthony Citrano
Opposing views are good as long as they are value added. If someone has an opposing view because they have been indoctrinated by whatever cult and are just spouting off stuff that has no basis in reality, then they just aren't worth listening to. And yes, I'm sure that i vaguely resemble this at times, but trust me that there's always thought behind my madness. - Alex Scoble
I think my brother blocked you because he thought you were being a troll. Also if you removed all your comments in a thread and walked away, that would have gotten you blocked by him too. - Alex Scoble
He's done that last one at least 5 times. (not to say he isn't also a creepy trolly stalker, not that reading his feed will tell you, he deletes his messes after creating them) - Matthew DeVries
I didn't say that you'd agree that he was right for blocking you, but that's why he blocked you. Just sayin'. - Alex Scoble
I only block people who are unreasonable, consistently rude and nasty to me (and others) w/out being provoked. - Mona Nomura
Chris, I will paypal you $100 if you can go a year without saying Mona, Scoble, Blocked. Why do you keep revisiting, and rebringing up the issue, like every 2 weeks, it's your version of a menstrual cycle - Matthew DeVries
I think you'd need to give Chris something that he needs to get him to do that, Matthew. - Alex Scoble
Haha, Chris. - Alex Scoble
Chris White? Eeek. - Mona Nomura
I think I'd need to give him the cure to poison he just drank, talking about your brother and Mona blocking him is like his lifeblood, he's like Gollem with it. - Matthew DeVries
LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!! Ignorance is bliss, Matt -- especially when it comes to him... :| - Mona Nomura
Maybe we can have a form of indulgences, like carbon credits in the church of the algore, to get someone out of FF purgatory. We could call it a Scobuck. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
And it comes back to the Pequod, wasn't Scobuck one of the spearmen? - Matthew DeVries
Pay 10 Scobucks to hit the Scobleizer reset button? - Alex Scoble
Back up Alex, he's getting angry, you won't like him when he's angry - Matthew DeVries
Man, you really are a bad boy. How could you not be subscribed to my brother? - Alex Scoble
LOL, Matthew, Chris and I get along just fine, except when he doesn't read everything in a thread. - Alex Scoble
Yep, Chris. You definitely need some punishment. - Alex Scoble
On those rare occasions? - Matthew DeVries
I don't like being in the middle of arguments between two people when the argument is with the two. It's like a sitcom at its worst, heh. I think you guys need each other like the Joker needs the Batman. - Alex Scoble
And now my comments lack context. :( I'Z IZ A SAD PANDA - Alex Scoble
....."Also if you removed all your comments in a thread and walked away, that would have gotten you blocked by him too. - Alex Scoble" - Matthew DeVries
I rarely delete my comments, Chris. - Alex Scoble
I find it amazing that with all the terrible things Obama is doing in this country you people find it necessary to distract with some small time mayor. Will you find a racist under a rock everytime Obama lies to us about everything he is about? 191 comments? Come on! let's talk about the real facts of things right now. After only five weeks it is clear that as President, Barack Obama... more... - Noah David Simon
Yup, and that mayor is still racist. - Hutch Carpenter
I don't like racism. It's even worse than having a private feed. - Oldengrey (Jay)
FWIW, Steve Marin once said, "Comedy is not pretty." Likewise, racism is not pretty. But that doesn't make racism comedy. - Jimmy Walker
I am pretty sure that every one recognized the picture for what it was as soon as they set eyes on it. I think that the real point of contention stems from the fact that up until recently, this type of behavior came with little in the way of consequences. - J. Abdul-Qahhar
the racism is that people use an important issue to hide our government lying to us more often in the last month then anytime in history. the racism is people think they can get away with that. the racism is that you abuse a real problem to charade the abuses this administration is taking part in. the racism is you elected this guy because of his skin color... not because he is stand up... more... - Noah David Simon
With regards to the the NY Post dead chimp pic, there is a piece in the opinion section of the L.A. Times that discusses a study in which their conclusion is that people are more likely to commit violence against black people when, even subconsciously, they are associated with apes. http://www.latimes.com/news... I wonder if this findable on Pubmed? - Victor Ganata
OMG how did i miss this thread. lol hey FriendFeed guys can you add some kind of SMS alarm system, so that I get notified of any 150+ comment threads containing the word "racist?" lol but seriously, folks... black people in this country gots to put up with racism every damn day. bill clinton sent a black-people-and-watermelon postcard to his granny... more... - Karim
Karim dude, you RULE LOL - Mona Nomura
@Noah, "how is it we are giving tax dollars to Hamas and the big comment stream is some racist nobody?" Because this thread is about a racist nobody. Feel free to start a new thread about how our tax dollars are being spent, I'm sure it will be a hot topic also. - Jeff P. Henderson
lol *blush* thanks, Mona. - Karim
it has to do with the fact that I don't scream about the Holocaust at a BBQ because I don't like the fact they aren't using Kosher meat. it has to do with relevance. some ass and his watermelon card is meant to distract from the real oppression going on in politics. nothing new... Hamas and Gaza sympathy are the real bigotry. we are funding terrorists people. you put this jerk in office on the race card. you support violence the same way. the real bigotry is less obvious. 203 comments now. - Noah David Simon
If this idiot used taxpayer funded pc/server/email software, he's in even more deep shit if his city took federal dollars of any sort. So much for leadership. Isn't this the same county where the local GOP sent out photoshopped racist pics of Obama as a muslim? Go figure. - ursi
for crying out loud. tax payer money? now you justify this issue. move on dot org should be renamed I can't stop talking about the Watermelon and the Monkey cartoon. serious issues going on right now. - Noah David Simon
Noah, why did you waste time commenting here if you don't like it? Federal law requires when cities & counties accept federal tax dollars from you and me, they can't discriminate, etc. Now, go relax, sweetie! - ursi
I'm relaxed. I'm laughing my ass off at how ignorant you are. you don't reflect most of the regular voters... and you will see that. this guy is like any other blue state fashion. out faster then Carter because it is all smoke and mirrors. in the mean time you gotta deal with me. - Noah David Simon
@NDS: Quick tip, generalizing all of CA as blue is a mistake. Orange County - not blue. Just a helpful FYI. - AJ Kohn
I'm from LA. Uni High B! home of Tone Loc. http://www.youtube.com/watch... not helpful. thanks for trying more smoke and mirrors. please stop that. I presently live in Poughkeepsie NY. it should be blown out of proportion. racism sucks. this thread is not a service to hate because it only acknowledges the hate that goes on in one direction. how long was it before Obama finally realized that Durban would be devastating to his popularity because it *WAS* hate? - Noah David Simon

Haha +1 Spidra. - Reuben Thum
Mistake to think that you'd get a huge response due to follower number. :) Not everyone is looking at Twitter all the time and not everyone goes back through the tweets they missed. Those 12 were very likely the ones checking Twitter/FF at the time you posted. :) - Shawn Farner

Official: Pentagon allows coverage of war coffins - CNN.com
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon will lift its longtime ban on media coverage of the flag-draped coffins of war victims arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, according to a senior U.S. defense official with direct knowledge of the decision. The coverage must be approved by the victims' families, however. Advocates of opening the base to coverage say the unmarked coffins make it impossible to identify specific remains. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is to announce the change at a news conference at 2 p.m. ET, the senior official said. He ordered a review after President Obama asked for more information on the long-standing policy." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

War ain't pretty. People die. Why do we pretend otherwise? - Derrick
Perhaps getting editors to actually run photos like this as well? Or better yet, photos of civilian casualties and the true imagery of war on US front pages? Thus, no longer allowing the people who write the checks and cede the power to see war as an abstraction, a video game? Let's try that. k thx - Anthony Citrano
This is something that's been bothering the Partner-in-crime since he moved here from Canada. He always felt like by not showing the actual cost of war "they" (govt and/or media) were trying to downplay it (or as Anthony said, keep it as an abstraction). - Nine
-1 to everyone who wants to make the death of a soldier a political thing. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark I agree, but see nothing political in this thread. - Anthony Citrano
I was more thinking of some of the more partisan of the MSM, like FOX or NPR. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
One of the things our guys are fighting for is free speech for everyone. That includes people we hate like the Westboro scumbags. I detest them, but they have rights and they're pretty harmless - I don't think they're winning many hearts and souls, from what I understand it's almost completely one family. - Tad
Did you just call NPR partisan, Mark? They are the least partisan of any of the news outlets. - Alex Scoble
I think I'm going to have to agree with TOB here. Those Westboro people disrupt burials. If I'm at my loved ones grave and some SOB's start chanting their bullshit as I'm trying to say the hardest goodbye of all. A slap isn't enough. I'd deliver a severe beat down. - Berial
Well said, Jilly. The true cost of war isn't in the number of dead. It's in the number of people affected by the war in total. And quite frankly the 20k+ seriously injured is a higher cost than the death toll, but we hardly ever talk about the seriously wounded. - Alex Scoble
This shouldn't be seen as a political gesture. It is just a rectification of one of the many ways in which the previous administration sought artificially to distort the availability of information. If every such move were condemned as a "politicization", every bad thing an administration does that can pretend to be patriotic would become set in stone. Unfortunately there's no way to carry out this correction without it becoming news itself for a while. - Tim Ostler
YEAH no more censorship on the realities of the costs of war - Susan Beebe
Scott is was stopped during Bush Sr. Term. There was a split screen of caskets while Bush Sr was doing a press conference. The problem was while one screen showed the caskets, Bush Sr was smiling at a joke from one of the press corp. The two images didn't go over well - Joe K
@ Scott. I totally understand the desire to make people think about it. Most never even let the coffins enter their conscious. However, I believe the families should have the choice, public or private. Plenty of families will still want the homecoming to be as public as a parade. We certainly honor the living, why not a little public honoring of the dead? - Phil Boiarski

King Taco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
King Taco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"King Taco was founded in 1974 by Raul Martínez, who operated a mobile lunch wagon out of a converted ice cream truck. Within six months, he opened the first of the chain's restaurants. He opened the second King Taco on 3rd Street in Boyle Heights, which at 4,000 square feet is the flagship restaurant. Other locations soon followed, opening every other year in Commerce, Baldwin Park, El Monte and other East Los Angeles sites.[1] By 1995, he had established fourteen restaurants grossing over $21 million.[2] In 2008, the company operated 20 restaurants throughout Los Angeles County, including a restaurant in Old Town Pasadena, the first outside a predominantly Mexican-American neighborhood. The company has contributed to urban revitalization through the retrofitting of vacant commercial buildings for its restaurants." - Derrick from Bookmarklet

Funny point, Robert. My analysis of your topic: Google wants the experience of Microsoft - particularly in the political lobbying area, Facebook wants an ad revenue model that makes them money, Twitter wants to be able to sell marketing information on its users interaction, and FriendFeed wants the lime light that has been glistening over Twitter. - Tyler Brownfield
Bruce, this may turn out to be the year of the cockroaches http://friendfeed.com/rooms... - paul mooney

Sponsor Subway sticking by Phelps
"Restaurant chain Subway is still counting on Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps's power as a pitchman, despite the uproar over a photograph of him with a marijuana pipe, Advertising Age reported. "Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior," Subway, which specializes in sandwiches, said in a statement. "Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans."" - Derrick from Bookmarklet
i'm buying a couple of $5 foot longs today just because of this - Cee Bee
Because there's nothing like a couple of cold cut combos to stave off the munchies after a reefer binge. - Mattb4rd
Subway knows how to handle a situation. They know this will all blow over and Phelps will eventually be everyone's hero again. Kelloggs is going to feel pretty stupid in a few months. - Shawn Farner
THANK YOU. This is the right response. The guy is a human being, not some kind of god. He made a mistake. No-one got hurt. Let's all move on. - Kamilah Gill
but of course, after smoking a pot, subway tastes goooooooood - Dobromir Hadzhiev
+1 Matt. Hostess should sign him today while his value is low. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
++ceebee - we may do the same - im getting tired of watching us elevate people into the stratosphere only to turn on them and rip them to shreds as soon as they fail to act like superhumans 100% of the time - i get kellogs' perspective and it was their right to act that way but i am happy subway handled it this way - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
HAHA! ++ lindsey - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
heh - Kamilah Gill
uh have Cheech and Chong have him as sponsor yet? - Fred Grott
good to see this. - Thomas Hawk
so are they marijuana heroes because they're still giving him money, or are they contributing to the demonization of weed because they said they were disappointed in his behavior? I can't keep track anymore. - Richard Lawler
I think it's fine to be disappointed, because it is still illegal, but this is a much better way to handle the situation than what Kellogg's did. Far less judgmental. - Kamilah Gill
Subways just became my favorite chain. :p - Helen Sventitsky
I'm off to Subway this weekend, too. Bully for them. - Chris Baskind
Subway's great, and as liberal as they get - evidently they don't believe in redneck meat (or red meat?) - Aaman (Clone of FF)
So I will be the oddball and say that Subway could afford 2 be more generous than Kellogs b/c they have different primary customers: kids. If I was a mother I would not want to buy a box with his picture, because while I'd want my kids to know mistakes and forgiveness are important parts of life, I would not want to exalt him as a role model. You can talk to kids and try to use the... more... - R. Ferguson
@Aaman Lamba Not necessarily (re: red meat) They serve both a meatball (ground beef) and a roast beef sandwich. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I disagree with Kellogg and agree with Subway.I don't want to send a message to my kid that "smoking pot is cool," but I do want to send the message that you can succeed in spite of your mistakes. I think it should open a door of communication between parents and children, because we already put so much pressure on kids to be perfect. Why not show them that success is NOT perfection? Kids are much smarter than we give them credit for, and they understand the difference. The younger ones won't know anyway. - Trish R
I don't have much to say about this Phelps issue but mmmm, Subway! - Rahul Das
success isn't necessarily perfection, but it should include not being dumb enough to have pictures of you doing something illegal posted on the internet, and if that happens, there can be consequences. The takeaway here is that if you're a great athlete you can do what you want, apologize later and it's all good. I think kids are smart enough to pick up on that aspect as well. - Richard Lawler
I'm gonna go out and spend money at Subway cause I wanna send a message that this prohibition needs to end, once and for all. Would you rather have your kids drinking alcohol or smoking a joint? - Marc Canter
Marc Why are those the only two choices? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Lindsey, the person that grew it. Who knows what's in a Bud Light anymore? - Jason Wehmhoener
+++ Marc. - jcunwired
I agree with Jason, it's not even safe to give your kid a peanut butter sandwich anymore. - Trish R
i'll start by reiterating that kellogs or whomever has the right to do what they want but as little dude grows up i will be far more concerned about the influences his friends will have than an Olympic swimmer. we'll be teaching him the values we think are right regardless of what everyone else says.- THREAD KILLA'! - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
As I said elsewhere (sorry to those who've heard me ranting) I still think we are stuck in the days of Reefer Madness that language like "mistake" is even considered rational. If he'd been photographed with a glass of wine in his hand, would we be having this discussion? Of course not. The law is wrong; the act was not. - Anthony Citrano
I dunno Anthony, that 21st amendment seems pretty radical and dangerous to me. Perhaps we should reconsider it. ;-) - Jason Wehmhoener
Subways major customers are kids with the muchies that only have $5. - CW™
I'm in a different camp altogether here: I think celebrity endorsements are really silly*. I suppose I can understand how such an appeal, well, appeals on an emotional level, but logically I'm neither more nor less apt to buy something because some famous person pitches it. [*by my logical universe. clearly in the current universe, celebrity endorsements make a lot of cents.] - Adam Lasnik
Adam, I agree there, though I'm not sure it's a typical point of view. I keep having to remind myself who this Michael Phelps guy is. - Jason Wehmhoener
