Stephen Abram comments on the open source white paper: http://stephenslighthouse.sirsidynix.com/ (via @mbreeding)
my comment on the blog post is being held for moderation. it reads as follows: "One suggestion: it might help advance the cause of respectful discussion if you would release a version of the position paper which includes citations for the evidence supporting the claims made therein. I look forward to it. Thanks!" - Luke Rosenberger
Abram's post certainly has a very different tone than the original position paper. - marthalib
this is not the first time in the recent past that Abram has tried to have it both ways. - DJF
Yes. I think it's fine to take offense at ad-hominem attacks and name-calling (his *family* though? Did people really say something about his family?). But this paper is FUD pure and simple *even if* some of it is grounded in reality. - Your Neighbor Steve
Agreed with Steve, Josh, and Luke. Without citations and evidence, it's not "critical thinking." That's what we teach our first-years, and it's what I'd expect of any professional in the library field. - Catherine Pellegrino
*nods in agreement with all* - Laura H.
Also, you know, I wouldn't be happy if people were calling me names. But I suppose I'd recognize that it goes with being somewhat well-known in our community. Abram is far more well-known than I am, and at *least* as happy to go out on a limb and say obnoxious provocative stuff. The dude needs to quit crying about that stuff, as it goes with being the public face of his crummy company. - Your Neighbor Steve
I have not called Abram names in any discussion about this paper. Not even off-line. - DJF
David, most people haven't. I think his reaction is partly genuine and partly more FUD trying to distract from the real criticism. Hmmm, maybe I should make another bar graph. - Your Neighbor Steve
as david suggests, abram's definitions of "respectful discussion" can be a little hard to discern: see http://bit.ly/C2Cbm and then http://twitter.com/sabram... - Luke Rosenberger
Luke, that being the other recent instance of Mr Abram, MLIS FSLA trying to have it both ways, between "private" and "public" discourse. - DJF
not to threadjack, but are the FSLAs going to become faskpros? inquiring minds... - Luke Rosenberger
I, too, have a comment on Stephen's blog awaiting moderation. It'll be interesting to see which posts, if any, get approved. - Michael B. Klein
I'm looking forward to seeing which comments he ultimately approves... - marthalib
six comments now appear, including michael's and mine, each with an individual response from mr abram. - Luke Rosenberger from iPhone
Dang. That one from "richard" is lame. And uses the "flush" metaphor I'd used in a Tweet earlier. The comment isn't from me. - Your Neighbor Steve
