"For Java, have a look at Java Precisely: http://www.amazon.com/Java-Pre... It's not an O'Reilly book, but it has a very similar structure to the the K&R C book - it tells you exactly what you need to know without a lot of fluff. And while I'm recommending books, you might want to check out books that don't just focus on a particular language, but rather cover computer science concepts and peopleware type books.
