New Yelp iPhone app is also out. There's a cool easter egg (Augmented Reality feature). Here's how to do it:
Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying "the Monocle has been activated." It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS. - Robert Scoble
waiting Robert.... :) - Sampad Swain
You point it at businesses, or down the city block. I'll try it right now. - Robert Scoble
Yep! Works. Took a few tries to get it to activate. Some of the places it shows me have been closed for ages though, guess I need to update Yelp for the area. - Otto
That sounds so cool. Would love to see a video demo of it Robert! - Alex Calic
I wonder why it's an easter egg. That sounds great. - Daniel Ha
I just did it. Very cool. I hear this feature was added for me. I really love it! - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Daniel: probably to get it through the iPhone store approval process faster. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Raises the question of whether they would have rejected it if they'd known about it. Or did Yelp tell the reviewers about it? - Jan Dawson
Very, very cool! Just tried it out. There's not a lot on Yelp near by work (kind of an industrial area), but I did get it to find the nearest restaurant. So cool! :-) - Josh Bancroft
as long as Yelp allows iPhone users to rate on the fly.. previously had to sync first (not smart) - Sam Levin
can anyone grab me a screenshot of this? i want to write about it - Marshall Kirkpatrick
I do love beating TechCrunch with news! :-) - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Yes, Mr. Scoble, you beat RWW, TechCrunch, AND Mashable! Damn. - Ben Parr
I can't get it to work... :( - Larry Roth

Stupid 3GS. You guys think you're so cool. Easter eggs, harumph! *mumble grumble* - Sarah Lane
Yay it works in Canada too! - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
Nice idea but in my case the locations seem to be about 180 degrees off - i.e. showing behind me instead of in front - but may be down to a fuzzy GPS location or something - will have to keep trying - Jan Dawson
I wonder why it was "secret", ... undocumented API usage or just to create marketing buzz ? - Kooleido
Kooleido: I hear it was added at last minute. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Damn, nothings happening. I've shaked it :( - Stephen Pickering
No iPhone 3G love because no compass? Phooey. :P - Cheryl Jones
Installed It! Works Awesome! Would definitely use it on my next lunch hunt in Downtown - Kooleido
Got it to work--just took a little more shaking...was worried I was going to put my phone through the ceiling! - Larry Roth
Kooleido, how'd you get it to work. I've installed and shaken, but nothings happening - Stephen Pickering
Oh--and very cool - Larry Roth
Stephen shake in long and hard strokes. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I hate that the iPhone 3G can handle all this new stuff, but Apple insists that you need the 3Gs. Qik on the jailbroken 3G has been awesome! - Elijah Nicolas
@Elijah Nicolas The 3Gs is for the built in compass that is required for augmented reality to work. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
lol if it was added for you Robert it would show the cutest girls in the area instead - Sherry Reynolds
Didn't I hear that Apple had an embargo on AR apps til next month? - Brian O'Connell
Very cool, thanks for the info. It appears you have to be logged into Yelp though the app before the monocle option will appear. - Patrick Looney
just posted about it http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive... good job finding it first Robert! - Marshall Kirkpatrick
1st sentence typo in your post Marshall ;o) - Alex Calic
Couldn't get it to work by "shaking it" but I got it to work by moving my iPhone up and down 3 times in a vertical motion. Pretty damn cool. - Doug Rice
Marshall, how do you get that camera view? I can't seem to get mine to work. I've shaken and shaken - Stephen Pickering
Well, thats slightly cool. - Sean Oliver
Stephen, you should probably just keep shaking. In publish, with lots of people around. :) No, I don't know. I don't have a 3Gs so I don't have a compass so I don't have the Yelp AR. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Holy crap. It really works. - David Sharpe
Unreal... landscape and portrait works. - Drew Lucas
Yeah this is very cool. Don't know if I want to be the guy standing in the middle of the street downtown using it, but I can see some very practical applications. - Trevor Childs

I already had 2.0.2, but I'm downloading 3.0 now. I'm not thinking it's going to work in my office, but we'll see. - RobinDotNet
Ok, that's really cool. It even works sitting here in my office at home. - RobinDotNet
Downloading now. I am absolutely fascinated by the idea of augmented reality! - Victoria Harres Akers
This is pretty cool but the shake 3 times thing doesn't work too well - Jason Wehmhoener from iPhone
This is fantastic, just activated Monocle. For those having trouble, its best to move/raise and lower the iPhone 3 times vertically instead of just shaking it. I was shaking mine like a madman until I tried the vertical move. - Bryan

Amazing, how on earth did you find it! It's still 6:00 am, perhaps I'll Yelp for breakfast - Nalin Perera
Wow, I'll have to say this is phenomenal. Wish I'd had this on my trip to D.C. a couple weeks ago. Yelp just made an incredibly useful app even more useful. I've seen a lot of developers working on this technology lately but it looks like they beat everyone to the punch. - Mike Elliott

I just got the yelp AR to work, and I am staying tonight in a hotel, so I went to my window, and held the camera to the window and it was able to show me reviews of the businesses right across the street from me! I am in love with yelp all over again! - Colide81 (James)
Can't get it to work! Shook long and hard! - Islandwoo from iPhone

I COLLECT LOST LUGGAGE, PHOTOGRAPH IT, AND THEN TRY TO FIND THE OWNERS. IT’S A LITTLE ODD BUT NOT AS ODD AS STAMP COLLECTING, JUST A LITTLE HARDER TO FIND STORAGE SPACE. when A BAG GETS LOST THE AIRPORT OR AIRLINE WILL STORE IT FOR A WHILE AND TRY TO FIND THE OWNER. if they can’t identify the OWNER OF THE case THEY SEND IT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF WITH THE PROFIT GOING TO CHARITY. I GO TO THESE AUCTIONS AND BUY THE CASES SO I CAN PHOTOGRAPH THEM FOR MY WEIRD VOYEURISTIC PASSION. The reason for the web site? i would really like to try to find the people who own my suitcases, so if you HAVE ANY FRIENDS WHO HAVE LOST A CASE PLEASE GET THEM TO HAVE A LOOK. - Cee Bee
Wow. That's great layout of the items in the bags. Though it is a little strange this person admited their voyeristic tendencies. - Admiral Anika
Sort of a creepy fetish but seriously, first image upper right - is that a nurses uniform with hat? - Janet
looks like a "costume" of a nurses uniform. the kind one takes on a weekend vegas vacation possibly - Cee Bee
It was as if "tmi" on that suitcase. Searching for the french maid outfit now.......... - Janet
As long as he hasn't done anything else with the items besides taking photos of them. =p - ronin
I used to work for a courier company that had contracts with almost all of the airlines to deliver lost luggage back to the passengers, after it was found. I will tell you this, without exception, the airlines lose so much luggage that in just my region it's enough to keep 12 courier companies in business. And most of it is the fault of the airlines and not the passenger. - April Russo (app103)
Sorry, do you mind not SHOUTING! :) - Rui Pereira
I can remember having to arrange an exclusive special delivery driver for someone's cocker spaniel, once the airlines found it. The poor dog was missing for a few days and nobody had bothered to feed it or give it any water (don't worry, I did after contacting the owner). The airline never contacted the owner to tell them it was found, which is not the standard procedure, not even for a suitcase. They just sent it to my office in its carrier. - April Russo (app103)
What CAN'T you find on the net? - Derrick
April here in LA, there's an annual sale of items left behind at the airport. A few years ago, my friend got a laptop, high end DSLR camera with lenses, some clothes and a hat for about $400. - Admiral Anika
You know, this is a good reason not to pack your stained underwear. Your luggage might get lost and end up on that site for the world to see. - April Russo (app103)
yes, just say no to stained underwear. agghkk - Cee Bee
Curious this only shows current and cute clothing items. Where would the retirement age cruise ship luggage be located? - Janet

Let the Right One In (film)
4.5 out of 5 STARS. This movie was so very close to being a perfect 5. I am still a bit speechless as I watched this movie about three hours ago. The lead actor and actress are both 13 years old (although I believe they were 12 years old when this film was made). They do a phenomenal job in this movie. I completely forgot to account for their age until I was reflecting after the movie. The way their relationship develops was funny, sad, hopeful and painful all at once. I caught myself smiling at many things throughout the movie. Keep in mind, the dialogue was at a minimum during most of the movie. It felt like a quiet storm as the story grew to a few peaks and crescendos. I loved the part of the movie when Eli (the female lead) gives Oskar (male lead) advice and is emphatic with it. So genuine and pure. To watch their relationship grow was just like watching two middle school kids love affair grow. I wish the two could have had more dialogue but perhaps that would have taken away from the effect of the movie - Amani from Bookmarklet
The title of the movie isn't revealed directly throughout the movie although I think I know what it means and if I am correct it is genius. Such a clever twist to the story. Amazing. I highly recommend this movie as it is plenty worth the time and money. The ending is definitely not predictable , right down to the final message sent. I won't spoil it all but read through the entire Wiki entry for a clue. (**Don't read the entire Wiki b/c it spoils the movie. Read it AFTER you see the movie. **) - Amani
I'll check this out. Looks like it could be quite good. - Brandon Titus
Added it to my Netflix. Thanks Amani! - Shevonne
No problem. See if you can sneak out and see it in the theater. I think it is the best love story I have seen in recent memory. - Amani
It's playing now at Farifax Regency Los Angeles http://www.regencymovies.com/main... - Pokai
yep ... that is where I saw it yesterday. Cheap too ... $5 for a matinee. :O I was really speaking to Shevonne who is in DC and I checked and it isn't playing there yet from what I saw. - Amani from IM
Unfortunately your comment about the spoiler did not show up because of the collapsed comments. Still, I saw this movie last night and loved it! - Jonathan Lee
sweet!! How did you feel about the ending? Did you understand the title and how it fit into the movie? If my deductions were correct, I think it is brilliant. Share more of your thoughts. I think you are the only person I know who has seen it and I would love to discuss it with you (without spoiling it for everyone else). LOL. - Amani from IM
I think I would have liked the ending better without the last scene on the train. That felt kind of tacked on as an afterthought. The obvious meaning of the title refers to a vampire needing permission to enter someone's home. Is there a second deeper meaning? Maybe let the right one into your life? I plan to read the book now. From the reviews I've read the movie left out quite a bit, as movies tend to have to do. - Jonathan Lee
I hear the book gets really into it and the main character isn't what she is in the movie. I think you got the basic meaning of the title, as well as the double meaning. I like the scene in the train b/c of the message (KISS) she sends him. Just kind of tugs at you a bit more at the end. But the final scene at the pool will be considered a classic scene as times goes on IMO. I look forward to buying it on DVD when it comes out. - Amani
I just saw the movie!! Incredible and astonishing, A second part it'll be awesome,too.. maybe with Oskar, the little boy a few years old, but the little girl Eli, remaining the same because she's a vampire, and Spain or Italy as the hiding places after all these years running and keeping a low profile and... Oh damn! I'm spoiling the movie! - George The Writer
@George ... lovely ... what parts made you feel astonished (without spoiling the movie for others)?? - Amani
I love the last sequence of the film, when the two brothers and the two other kids are bullying Oskar in the pool, Also when the old guy is in the hospital and little Eli goes there too. That sequence in the hospital is incredible! I hope I didn't spoil something hehehe.. - George The Writer
Totally agree about the last sequence. I think my mouth was wide open. And the hospital scene was tremendous and painful at the same time. We haven't spoiled anything yet. What did you think about the dialogue (or lack thereof)? I thought it was a touch of brilliance. - Amani
I didn't catch that she sent "KISS" to him on the train. I do like that. I too think I'll buy it on DVD. I'm not interested in a sequel. I don't think all good movies warrant one. But all horror movies have sequels, right? Do Swedish art-house vampire movies play by those rules? - Jonathan Lee
Loved this film - I think it had a more satisfying end to a horror/thriller movie than I've seen in a very long time. I didn't feel like the end was a surprise, but they keep you in enough suspense to make it entirely worthwhile. - Jennifer Dittrich
sweet. I am so glad more people have watched this movie. I am going to pre-order the Blue-ray today maybe. Did you feel it was a love story as well? And the ending was tight as well. - Amani from IM
I think it was a love story in a lot of ways; without being too spoilery, I think we really see the future of Oskar and Eli in her relationship with the older man at the beginning. It is beautiful, but a bit sad. - Jennifer Dittrich
FYI, this comes out on DVD on Tuesday, March 10th!! I have mine ordered from Amazon. Blue-ray too. :) - Amani
Hurray! I'll have to order this next week! - Jennifer Dittrich
