So it's since Tuesday huh? The ultimate thread. How will the thread die then? We must have a limit for that, let's say 24h without one comment.
- Zu from AOD
As a side note, I do have to applaud the endurance and pettiness of those of us on FriendFeed. No one on Facebook gave this status update a second look!
- Mike Nayyar
We pride ourselves in our pettiness and obsessiveness. Um, wait.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Remember. It's not whole Scoble likes. It's who likes Scoble.
- Akiva
According to FriendFeed, that's everyone. And some Twitter marketers and SEO experts.
- Mike Nayyar
Mike will get in the last word. Eventually. Everyone else is an idiot for playing his little game. Me included. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm not actually playing. Or, if I am, I'm playing to lose.
- Akiva
HAHA! You see that? Robert Scoble acknowledges I will eventually win! HAHA! FINALLY! For once in my life, I win! :) :) :) :) Unless Logical shows up...
- Mike Nayyar
Only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
- Tinfoil 2.0
We're testing the limit on the number of comments.
- DGentry
Nah, the FFundercats live chat pushed that one way over the top. We are, however, testing the limits oh how sick people are getting of setting my face.
- Mike Nayyar
This thread has a lot of comments, that must mean Mike is an expert of some kind...or maybe an A-Lister. Must stalk^H^H^H^H^Hinvestigate him...
- Rah-PM 2012
Olympus too? Good thing Logical doesn't know any Japanese mythological figures.
- Mike Nayyar
All right, if you're going to play that way, Raijin AND Ajisukitakahikone are BOTH mad at you. And Raijin was especially unhappy because you interrupted his NOMmage of children's bellybuttons.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Dude, my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Raijin put down the platter.
- Tinfoil 2.0
We'd be content, of course, if you (Mike) issued a public retraction of the assertion in your post, followed by allowing someone else to post the last comment in the thread ;-)
- Tinfoil 2.0
805 comments!! I'm afraid to click on the more link....
- Jeff P. Henderson
Nicholas, as long as it's not Mike, it's irrelevant.
- Tinfoil 2.0
I'm sad that Logical saw this Facebook status.
- Mike Nayyar
You know at some point, expanding this comment will really put a strain on mortal browsers. It already has a 3 second pause to expand it.
- Mark Philpot
I wonder if at some point we will hit a soft limit and FF won't let it keep going. That or they look at this as a great high-bounds test case for the system.
- Sparky, lurking
Great experiment there, I'm somewhat scared opening the thread here. Funny thing, Even the explosion of words spawned through this, making it a wordle madness. http://www.wordle.net/gallery...
- Zu from AOD
I'm scared to expand the comment thread :)

- Daniel Morgan
No you just don't know I posted this.
- John D Reasor
cant the person that started this block the comments now? and thereby win.
- Morgan
If you can get buddy buddy with mike and figure out his schedule, you can prevent him from stopping the comments because you'll always be able to get the last word in. We must prevail for great justice!
- Jonathan Hardesty
That would be cheating, and he knows it :)
- Tinfoil 2.0
That's how the FriendFeed Mob rolls. :-D
- Steven Perez
from IM
you didn't disable the comments yet? you could comment and then do it and then you really would get the last word. but then again, that's cheating. and cheaters never prosper.
- Trish Haley
You're not supposed to make sense of it. It exits only as an opaque, monolithic data structure that is constantly being updated and evolving. ;)
- Tyson Key
Attempting to parse it in a manner that is not approved by FriendFeed, Inc may result in disruption of the space-time continuum, and a series of Bad Things(R) occurring.

It's not because I'm a person who wants to have the last word, but just because you people keep me reminding that there are others that do want that very badly, that causes me to comment here once again. HI! I'M BETTER THAN MIKE NAYYAR!!!!!!! LOSER! :-)

Eventually, you will win. Because you're not married to this thread. But if you ever marry...your trend of always getting the last word will end. Painfully.

This thread must go away!!! What if it kills FF!?
- SAM
this thread could go away right now. but you people keep posting comments...wait....didn't I just do the same thing? OK, nevermind. Long live this Thread!!!!

I heard Nayyar had to get in the The Last Word, always. I talked to the casting director, and Mike Nayyar got the lead in The Last Word.

You guys!!! This post will forever break FF if we're not careful.

Yeah, we should all totally stop bumping this post.
- Slippy
I'm surprised Friendfeed can still expand this thread.
- Morton Fox
OMG, doesn't even want to image what would happen if Nayyar tried to use #fftop20. Actually I kind of do, but I bet it would be slow. Scores would be off the charts though.

Steven Perez isn't a Bunneh!!! As long as he doesn't respond.

- Mark J
It's okay, he's got a Catch-22 now. Steven Perez isn't a Bunneh, so long as he doesn't respond. And we all know he refutes his Bunneh status.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
It was real hawt in the town that night! IF I EDIT 18 hours later like now - is your last still last if comments are disabled? A hawt question.

I will allow you to have the last word. But to take that last word you are surrendering your honor to a den of sightless whores.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
It was a test. Honor is pride. A den of sightless whores is merely an event that you will carry forever. You have attained the 7th level of enlightenment.

I think this has lasted long enough. We already know what has to be the last word, it's already in the original quote. I will put it as the closing comment. I think we will all feel relieved we can now carry on to do greater things. For ourselves, our loved ones and the world.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
I dunno, the Akiva nipple-licking beach picture is pretty long, too. :-) Ah, and it looks like Mike Nayyar's last-word thread has more than 2200 comments in it. I guess we'll have to step it up over here, huh?

http://www.google.com/reader... I'm glad you asked this right now. I just realized that several people are following me and I didn't even know it. I hope it hasn't been this way for long!
- Michael Fidler
Just noticed that Reader now allows grouping of people you follow! Wondering: is Reader going to become a competitor (instead of complement) to FriendFeed?
- Chris Rogers
@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. Right now it's a manual process involving either a new Group/Room or Imaginary Friend. Should be 2 clicks tops.. Also see: http://friendfeed.com/alexsch...
- Alex Schleber
Here is mine : http://www.google.fr/reader.... I share (mainly on French sites and blogs) about libraries, literature and arts, human and social sciences, photography :-)

LOL here we go again :o) http://www.google.com/reader... I share a lot of blogs and funny stuff that I read, it's neat how I can share and it gets posted all over by friendfeed.
- David Gross
http://www.google.com/reader... - I share items about productivity, gaming, movies, and misc. stuff from the Google "cool" via Recommendations feed. Thanks Kol for starting this thread because I've been trying to cut down on the number of feeds I subscribe to and instead just follow interesting people.
- Dusty Edenfield
Svartling: good point about adding people to groups. I noticed I couldn't comment on items that were shared by some users.
- Dusty Edenfield
I've (we) written a lot of more good tips on how to use Google Reader in Google Reader comments. It's too bad we don't have permalinks in Greader so we can share our notes and comments. Otherwise I could have posted a link here. Here are some on friendfeed: http://friendfeed.com/svartli...
- Svartling
Thanks for posting this Kol. Never paid any attention to my shared items folder before but just did!
- Martha
The conversation is really blowing up (in a good way) on Reader. The most important reminder currently is to set up groups and allow commenting. That is NOT on by default!
- Vince DeGeorge
Thank you all. I think I have subscribed you all now (except those feed in languages I don't understand) Here is mine again: http://www.google.com/reader...

I've started to follow a few of the people here but there's quite a few, so will take me a while :) - My currently fairly bare feed is: http://www.google.com/reader...

There are a few entries here you might like to read to help you. This one: http://ff.im/6CkQj explains about adding people to groups to allow them to comment and why some don't stay in groups. In this one: http://ff.im/6F9pQ I suggest a way to track a large number of shared items using PostRank. This: http://ff.im/6Ci0P and this: http://ff.im/6AM35 has a few tips on using GReader as a lifestreaming service. And this: http://ff.im/6EMT1 gives a few examples of GReader bundles.

Those of you above whom I already follow on FF/Twitter/etc., I've subscribed to your feeds. As for the rest of you: if you follow me on GReader, I'll follow you back.

I'm sharing some pages now, including a few of my past blog entries.

Because I have issues with data duplication, I have merged this list with the google reader shares room feeds. You can view the Google spreadsheet at http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc...

There are a bunch of shared feeds that I could not resolve the Google username for because they did not have a named profile set up.
- Rob Diana
tristanhambling, your link didn't work. :-(

It would be really handy to have all these shared feeds as an opml file. Has anyone added everyone? Care to export an opml of the shared feeds?
- Paul Jacobson
I'm http://www.google.com/reader... Not really comfortable with the custom URL though since it can only be your gmail username. Makes it really easy for spamspiders I think.

Tobias, possibly but not had any problems myself though Gmail has the best spam filters around so I probably not noticed. ;-)

Teddington (across the river from Kingston Upon Thames, is where I think I'd like to live. Just 'cos it's cheaper than everywhere else around it. :-)

Microsoft OneNote is one heck of an application!!! The more i am using it, the more i am liking it. It helps organise things just the way you want it to. With text search, including the text in graphics & audio, this one is loaded with features. Just some links i stumbled upon while looking out for Onenote in the web : http://iheartonen ote.com/... - http://www.google.com/buzz...
Yeah, I liked OneNote too, back when I was toying with Tablet PCs. I wonder how it's changed since I last used it.
- Chieze Okoye
well, am new to it. Though heard of it before, never gave it a try since recently, and am glad i did :)
- Gtp19
I do my PC install/reimage checklists in OneNote. I have to sign them and get the users to sign them, so I use my TabletPC to document apps, data locations, etc., and email them to the people who require me to fill them out.

I've posted a thread on Google Buzz: http://bit.ly/bGaHvj and trying out a post on Google Wave: http://bit.ly/ac2u1m Where are you from? Who are your supporting? What are your thoughts and predications of the match?

USA! USA! I hope they talk slow so I can understand what is happening.

England to win 3-0 with the two latter goals coming after I'm so steaming drunk I can't see the TV from playing the "down a shot every time Heskey falls over" game.
- Mark H
US link working fine from here in the US. I am expecting a thorough ass-kicking by u guyz on our guyz, but hoping for more of a Spain v US replay ; >
- Thom Kennon
Kol, looks like, so far, you're gonna be outnumbered here... better spend the next 2 hours rustling up some English cowboys ; >
- Thom Kennon
Halil, the link was via ABC, does it not work?
- Kol Tregaskes
Thom, hehe, well that would be down to maths. More Americans on the planet, more Americans on the net, more Americans on FriendFeed. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Where are all the England supporters? Or just anyone from the UK? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
It will be fun to see England beat the Americans in something. =P England to win 3-1. Rooney twice and Gerrard once to score.
- Faraz Mullick
Things England has contributed to the world: BP, kidney pie and East India Company. THings America has contributed to the world: Apple, rock and roll, Megan Fox. 'Nuff said.
- Mike Nayyar
Im going to watch it on ITV, found it listed there, not a channel i watch much these days.
- Halil
(Let it be known: I am a huge anglophile, but I'm a bigger patriot. Also, I'm a liberal. WHOA CONTRADICTIONS!)
- Mike Nayyar
So by how many goals will USA lose do you think??? :-P
- Halil
Halil, yeah it's a shame ITV have the England match today. I really don't like their sport coverage.
- Kol Tregaskes
CBC are covering it here, so I'm not sure who will be commentating. Oh, and - IN-GER-LAND!
- WoH: Minding her Steves
Kol, i don't like anything they cover, sports, politics, news, it all sux. The ONLY thing they are good at is the occasional drama, that's it.
- Halil
Rene says you can watch the match on ESPN3.com
- Kol Tregaskes
I just checked, but ESPN3.com does not do a live feed of England-USA :-(
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
I'm thinking that none of the USA games will be streamed live, all others possibly might.
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
Kol, the link that you posted up above seems to be different than the site that espn3.com forwards to... and it seems like it might stream for me here -- maybe it has to do with it being a USA game -- actually it looks like it has to do with it being on ABC instead of ESPN --- since ABC is a national broadcast network they're probably not restricting it - and it is a different site than espn3 (espn3 doesn't have the game today)
- Chris Heath
I don't like Lampard and Gerrard together in central midfield. Milner should play central with Lamps and Gerrard should play on the left/in the free role.
- Toby Graham
Wondering what I will do when in Germany, the bbc links only work within the uk dont they?
- Iphigenie
R was too chicken to go watch it in the pub, being american and all. I thought this would be fun, considering we'd be happy whoever wins :)
- Iphigenie
USA Subs: Guzan, Beasley, Bornstein, Buddle, Edu, Feilhaber, Gomez, Goodson, Holden, Spector, Torres, Hahnemann.

- Kol Tregaskes
Posting that on B uzz was so much easier. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
yeah but my buzz doesnt refresh, unlike here. FF is so much more "live"
- Iphigenie
Joelle, you have to view it from your Buzz stream or inside Gmail for it to update in real-time. I think the only place it doesn't update in real-time is the thread pages, which is very annoying.
- Kol Tregaskes
Did anyone see the Nike long version commercial? That commercial is one of the best I've seen!
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
you're right, i just followed the thread link and had i opened it in gmail it would refresh :)
- Iphigenie
Don't underestimate the US, the more interested they have gotten in football, the better they have got. Tons of money poured in the sport, and the university system creates a lot of focused and fit athletes. Could be the year they pass the line into top countries.
- Iphigenie
not a real delayed feed, i had paused it while the phone rang, and it started where i had paused. a reload cleared it but i missed the goal :(
- Iphigenie
Positive start for England. Now I'm going to be nervous for the rest of the game.
- Kol Tregaskes
Gerrard and Lampard could be the decisive force that breaks down US backline consistently
- Thom Kennon
Glad for england, they need the morale boost :)
- Iphigenie
I'm happy for Gerrard as he's always criticised for not playing as well for England as he does for Liverpool. Glad he's got a goal and is the captain today.
- Kol Tregaskes
Howard is right to be losing his shit right now.

Defense isn't doing so well for the USA team right now. Allowing England to cross midfield too much. Wow, listen to me, I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about.

My parents are leaving, I think it is time to take this to the HDTV.

Disagree, Kol; world cup games aren't very atmospheric usually anyway since it's such a mix of fans. Horns help. Reminds me of the African Cup of Nations.
- Mark H
Eivind, not really sure. Subbed for Milner who just got a yellow card. But I can't believe that's the reason.
- Kol Tregaskes
First time we've heard Lampard's name. I suppose Gerrard is taking the aggressive role in midfield and Lampard will hold back

I was really drunk during that one, Mark :)

I think he was screened by his back from the initial strike and so he never got square to the ball. that's his excuse and he should stick with it. every "soccer" coach in America will likely us the tape as a teaching moment when training new strikers ; >

Univision just said a funny story about the guy who was told to get out of the game to change his shirt. He was arrested because he stole the toilet seat of a store. Hahaha
- Shevonne
Where was the England bite? We were the better team but where was that killer instinct?
- Mark H
think they will just play safe and waste 10 of all watchers' minutes? fear so too
- Iphigenie
Both teams need some 5-Hour Energy for their next matches. This is going to turn into another Group of death.
- Carlos Ayala
Well I predicted a 1-1 draw. I was happy before the match if we got a draw. But I'm disappointed we let in the very poor own goal and that we didn't any of the many chances we had. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
When have we last seen the "England bite"?
- Iphigenie
@Carlos I have some. Ill give it to them. haha
- Shevonne
LOL@Shevonne. They need cases of it girl!
- Carlos Ayala
i dont think it went down on the books as an own goal. and IMO it wasnt one either.
- Carlos Ayala
Joelle: we used to have people to fear up front; Shearer, Lineker, etc. Now, it's... midfielders who sometimes score and Heskey who never does. Plus Crouch. Oooh. Frightening.
- Mark H
All in all, that was a fantastic game. Fast pace, some unlucky breaks, but overall, great effort on both sides at varying times.
- Mike Nayyar
See you guys back here- Kol, thx for hooking us up!
- Thom Kennon
Mark: Totally agree - too many media stars nowadays. Odd that the amount of money in the game in the UK seems to not have helped the quality of play :(
- Iphigenie
nice game though, all in all --shuts up now--
- Iphigenie
hey, just noticed twitter is putting icons on hashtags, cute+
- Iphigenie
Matthew, you've been watching another match then. It was definitely an own goal.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thom, no worries. Are we playing the US again then? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Thanks for everyone joining in. I was worried we'd have no one here.
- Kol Tregaskes
I look forward to the next big match everyone is on for. What's coming down the pipe of note this weekend?

Interesting game there ... the Altitude is affecting many players.

Although the score is confirmed as 1-1. I have an overwhelming feeling as though England lost the match and USA won it. Strange. Next match we have to beat em though

they can only meet again in the finals, right?
- Chris Heath
Chris, I believe that's who it works. You can only possibly meet teams in your group again in the final.
- Kol Tregaskes
yeah, after the group stage it moves to a single elimination bracket tournament and the two teams from each group that pass get placed on opposite sides of the bracket so they can only meet again in the final (or i guess the 3rd/4th place game)

Proofs are World Cup problems first encountered in geometry. The object of a proof is to show the domination of Germany which proves my theorem (That Germany rules this World Cup), written as a list of math statements. Sometimes Youtube clips are added to explain if the statement is a given, or can be concluded from a given based on a proven theorem. I didnt really want to add everyone i know on friendfeed to my facebook, i like to keep them seperate as much as i can. but you know what, fuck it http://www.facebook.com/simon... add a note saying you;re from friendfeed if you add me, then i can group everyone up :)

Thanks, Simon. I've not started going through these yet. :-)

I'm only going to add the people i actually talk to on here. I have a lot less people on my follow list than you, so its a bit easier for me :)

I don't freaking have one because I never wanted to sign up for Facebook. :P Now I find out that through no fault of my own I'm technically a Facebook user? GAH.

I do not use it much LOL I just post to it from other sites so to fill up my friends stream, I do get messages and some status in text. Anyone who really wants to add me, use the facebook link on my profile. :o)

thanks andrew... much appreciated :).. hey by the way, can i invite others once i get my wave online?? or is it jus the special people who have the privilege to invite others ??
- Gtp19
I'm not sure; last I heard, people who got their invites directly from Google in the first round *were* able to invite others, but those who had been nominated by other Wave users couldn't. That may have changed now that the rollout seems to be gathering pace...
- Andrew Terry
Howdy there, could I grab one too ? digix[dot]antz[@]gmail[dot]com cheers!

sooo, i guess that means u got ur invite from google directly.. hope the invite policy has changed so that i can add more mates to my wave... thanks once again for the invite :)

Anthony - done. 8 left. Gtp - you're welcome!
- Andrew Terry
Cheers mate :) does invite come through immediately or after a while ?

I'm not sure how long it takes for the invites to work through the Google-machine - from the horse's mouth: "Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick."

In a recent interview Microsoft called Zoho the 'Fake Office' "Fake? Well, if by "fake" Microsoft meant that there is no CD or DVD to buy, no bloatware to download, nothing to install, no hundreds of dollars to pay... then yeah, we agree. openff.org webdesign concept... (1280 px wide so click through to view fullsize ) / post additional features you think are needed for the home page here!
2. Participation panel with 3 actions: join the team / donate / spread the word
- vijay
3. Latest News panel: I would suggest this to be the friendfeed embed widget for the "openff" group.
- vijay
4. Top Dev panel: Shows most active contributors according to pointers along with their latest twitter updates. The one thing our project can offer is lots of attention for our devs so promoting active devs on a leaderboard is a good way to keep the activity up and running. ( Right now, I'm calling it "dev" board for lack of a nicer shortner name but the final leaderboard will include ALL contributors including non-devs. )
- vijay
5. Scroll Alert: At the right bottom is a small msg that shows up when the viewer still has some scrolling to do on the page warning them that there is MORE content on the page that is available for them to view.
- vijay
I haven't added scrollbars to the mockup. But there will be content below the fold as always.
- vijay
i think the video should be embedded within the page.. but i guess thats the case when the page goes live.
- Gtp19
yep, video will be a pop up overlay as usual. The page behaves the usual way sites these days display content, nothing extraordinary.
- vijay
Very classy. I wonder how it'd map to a "physical" website, though.
- Tyson Key
This is fixed width layout; viewable from 1024 upwards Jason.
- vijay
I think one reason for the relatively low numbers of friendfeed users was that people were uncertain as to how to use it and what value it provided over other web sites. In addition to the intro video, something like the "What can you use it for?" text on the current FF home page is needed but better written and making a more compelling case for signing up.

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ema Nymton
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. ""Let's open our Bibles," the veteran Plano ISD teacher tells students daily at two public high schools in the district. And it's legal for her to do it. A new state law requires that Texas public schools incorporate Bible literacy into the curriculum. But the law provides no specific guidelines, funding for materials or teacher training. So high schools are left scrambling to figure out what to teach and how to teach it. A handful of North Texas districts are offering an elective class, but most are choosing instead to embed Old and New Testament teachings into current classes."

And people are freaking out over Obama encouraging children to stay in school and help make the world a better place next week!? I don't get it. I'm embarrassed to be a Texan.
- Brad Williamson
If that happened here, I would either pull my kids from school or push to get ALL religious text taught as "literacy". If I was a student and this had happened to me, I would have made it a point to know other religious text and quote those in class.
- Anika
Is TX still a part of the union or have they already seceded?

Well, I help teach a Shakespeare class and a world lit class. Too many of the students do not understand the literature because they don't know the books from which the references are based. One of the major books upon which the references are drawn is the Bible. You won't understand the thoughts, the metaphors or the references of even a great classic like Hamlet or the incredibly...

As Melanie said, there are many good reasons for teaching the Bible as literature. I have no problem with that. I have no problem with teaching it in conjunction with history classes that discuss the influence of religion(s) on historical events. It's also ok for a comparative religions class. For me, the problem comes when courses are used not in the ways I described, but as a method of proselytizing to students.
- Katy S
As a Texan I can assure you there are a good many reasonable folks in the State. There are also a good many who are not. :-| Nothing wrong with comparative religion classes, but I think this Bible literacy stuff is a back door into good old fashioned preaching and should not be tolerated.
- Kurt Starnes
Melanie, the Bible as "literature" is one thing and somewhat acceptable as an elective. We had that an elective in college. I have friends who teach in Texas (oddly, all of them are Jewish) and they are at a loss. They have mentioned that their more...um, forceful Christian teachers are reworking plans like it's Sunday school, only because they have free reign.
- Anika
Anika, I am not able to assess the situation since I am not there. But it occurs to me that it might appear that some are "reworking plans like its Sunday School"at this point because they know their subject. In other words. It's not proselytizing to be well-informed about your subject and to speak about it with passion. Those are hallmarks of some of the better professors I've known and I've learned much and enjoyed their classes because of it.
- Melanie Reed
FWIW, the Texas legislature has been trying to moot-ify the Texas State Board of Education for some time, but I'm not sure where this is now. These folks promoting one specific religion in public schools continue to be a source of embarrassment for me and many others.
- Kurt Starnes
Kurt - I've been reading about the craziness with the board of ed in Texas. It's really a bit frightening. From what I've read about the situation there, I feel a bit uneasy about how this might be implemented. While I can see many good reasons for teaching the Bible for the reasons I mentioned above (and the literatures of other religious and philosophical traditions, for that matter)...

- Katy S
Katy - I agree with you. The problem, IMHO, is that the movement to teach the Bible as literature in Texas schools is analogous to the methods in which the veil of intelligent design was created to teach creationism as science. There is not a genuine, honest interest to teach the Bible as literature and teach it alongside other religious texts. Just my 2¢
- Kurt Starnes
Kurt, my father and mother were both teachers. He taught science. I teethed on it. I went to every science fair and was a medal winner so that meant I went on to the next round. I learned to think critically, and to observe. The one thing that I have found remarkable is how often science of the previous decade (which was stubbornly maintained as flawless) was proved untrue in the next. It led me to the conclusion that somewhere along the line we have some faulty studies going on.
- Melanie Reed
Melanie - That's the beauty of science and skepticism. And, I'm not aware of any mainstream scientists who would argue of science's flawlessness. The best concepts are fortified while the weak ones fall. I would argue that scientific principles are not wholly overturned from one decade to the next, but as we learn more, science remains open to the new knowledge. There is quite a bit of...

damn! I see lotsa atheists who had lost faith 4 the WRONG reasons. There's also lot of MISDIRECTION among atheists; the main focus I see among atheists is to DISPROVE religion; when actually the focus should be to accept the truth that it is a system that works, study it & find out ways to benefit from it. I would talk more about this but can't...
... for the very same reason non-believers are considered a threat by theists --->- " once you believe you cannot know; and once you know... you cannot believe. " Thus, exposing the truth to believers will destroy their faith and the world will fall into chaos as then no one will have a belief system left for them to hang on to, in order to get through the turbulence that is life. But this much I can say: Wake up atheists! What we need is a belief system that works for us; not destroying the existing belief system that obviously is designed and built to work for a large majority of humans and has successfully done that job for trillions of people over the ages.
- vijay
As an atheist I don't really care what others believe in as long as they keep it to themselves. I don't have any mission to make people drop their beliefs or anything like that. Belief may work for some, but I'm more interested in scientific explanations and common sense than fairy tales.
- Jemm
from fftogo
the key is "belief" Jemm; whatever works that will help you get through the troubles in life. That includes "fairy tales" for most humans. For those who have "realized" that they are indeed "fairy tales", we got nothing. When things go out of our control, common sense says "stop fighting and give up; you no longer have control"; however religion enables the "believers of fairy tales" to...

OTOH. and thanks to those scientific facts, I know that the more I know, the more humblier I should be.
- directeur
I don't see why not believing in G-d suddenly means you have NO belief system. Maybe I'd need to be an atheist to understand...
- Rah-PM 2012
whoa! this thread is getting out of track. Religion is man-made and the gods are too. But they exist because they work. We need something similar for atheists. Also read 3rd comment in this thread where I talk about "miracles".
- vijay
@directeur Not necessarily idiocy, but maybe unwillingness to admit that there isn't answer for everything - at least not yet. Then a "higher power" is an simple answer for anything and everything. Anyway, I said only my point of view and I agree that the more I know, the more I realize how much there is to learn in growing amounts. ;) If belief is a real feeling/phenomen, it can't be gained by logic and reason, but it is some kind of happening (like falling in love is, I guess).

What have you got against God that makes you despise or criticize someone who is not on the side of your faith ? That is all God is expecting from you, not dissing your human brothers because they do not believe the same as you. Full point.
- Thierry Lhôte
ah! thanks Thierry :D That's the point of my rant here. Instead of atheists focusing on explaining the truth about religion (which should NEVER be done... once you 'know', you cannot 'believe'; CHAOS will be the result of doing so) to justify atheism, what we need to do is find a way for us to get the benefits of religion. That's what's important.
- vijay
I'm just going to through this out there as its something I've thought about. I believe in science. I believe there is some power outside of us that controls the fabric of events, we just don't fully understand it yet. Maybe it's Quantum physics? Maybe it's something that "believers" have already been able to tap into to create "miracles", using their religion as some kind of catalyst.
- Rah-PM 2012
also Thierry, why atheists are dangerous is addressed in my first comment --->- " I would talk more about this but can't for the very same reason non-believers are considered a threat by theists --->- " once you believe you cannot know; and once you know... you cannot believe. " "
- vijay
Rah that's correct. That's why we need to study it. Find out how religion works and what happens inside us that makes these miracles happen.
- vijay
The problem is, Vijay, I've seen good and charitable atheists and bad religious motherfuckers. So the whole point of your rant is falling here. What IS important are your actions man, it does not matter to what religion or non-religion you belong. As an internet citizen, I find you particularly closed an not open minded. ^^
- Thierry Lhôte
Thierry when I was a kid, whenever I was in trouble I turned to god. When I grew up and saw thru the whole thing I have no where to turn to. I need a way to get the benefits I had, when I used to be a "believer". We all need it
- vijay
and dissing your human brothers is not turning to god, it is hiding from him by pure vanity
- Thierry Lhôte
There´s a logical fallacy; atheism does not lead to nihilism. It´s a widely held misunderstanding that atheists can´t have deep values, a moral system, and just as rich and good life, without religion. Also, atheism implies that you think there is no God, while agnostics just don´t (fully) believe (but you may be open to be the possibility).
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
Thomas, miracles. Religion lets you do that. Deeper values and richer life can be got from the teachings of parents, religion is not a necessity there. People turn to religion for miracles; to make something happen in your favor when all hope is lost. And atheists and agnostics need to find a way to make that happen.
- vijay
Vijay, you do not need to believe in miracles to be a christian, catholic or protestant. So do not think that your conception of religion is the universal one.
- Thierry Lhôte
insurance Thierry...i.e., if something happens I got God.
- vijay
Ha and you have read Job in the Bible ? it just tells the opposite, God sends misfortune to a man, to test the guy. So what you are telling us is your own, personal, way of uderstanding god. Ok I can dig that, and with that small particular an incomplete knowledge you pretend that atheists as a whole are misdirected. Man, this is true modesty, remarkable humility ^^
- Thierry Lhôte
that's accounting for those times when things don't go your way. No matter how strong the belief of a believer is he cannot bend metal with bare hands. When that happens, the believer cannot be allowed to lose faith forever. That clause takes care of that.
- vijay
If you believe that G-d+religion is necessary for miracles, doesn't that make you a believer? This whole argument is about what you believe in your own mind. I don't need G-d or religion to realize the truth.....there is no spoon. (dead serious)
- Rah-PM 2012
lol! Rah. Believing something random i.e., anything unrelated, can't make miracles happen. Just because I believe the sun will rise tomorrow doesn't mean I can rely on the sun to help me when I'm in trouble right? That's why :D
- vijay
Vijay, people use up their social security checks on the lottery every week. So, miracles... chance... luck... poor statisticians can still hope whether they´re religious or non-religious;) As for the "father figure need", what can I tell you, it has to be overcome apparently (ref. Nietzsche´s terms "will to power" and "the eternal return" if you´re interested, but there are more accessible texts and thinkers).
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
@vijay: can you give an example of a miracle? I can't think of a situation (disaster, accident, loss of job etc) where I couldn't reason: "Other people have been in much worse situations and survived. I can find a way out of this, too!". It is a matter of keeping calm and considering options and acting. Praying etc is as effective as relying in "luck" for getting things fixed. Or maybe...

Well, like I said before, if you believe there is some external force that controls everything, you've solved your problem. Whether you think that force is G-d or science, the belief still serves the same purpose.
- Rah-PM 2012
Rah, that is true. But I'm not able to control that at will, enough to make me believe it. Know what I mean?
- vijay
( hmmm.. luck huh? I'm thinking about that Jemm and Thomas... I can't find the right words yet to put my thoughts across... )
- vijay
I think, vijay, that is something you have to learn. You have to free your mind. Change how you think. This is not that easy, but also not very difficult. I used to think about things in an entirely different light just a short time ago.
- Rah-PM 2012
Thomas and Jemm, for lack of better words, here's an analogy: " you know how little children are afraid of the dark right? So they refuse to sleep alone at first. In such cases, parents usually give the kid a teddy bear. And that works. The kid no longer fears the dark. That's not because the teddy bear has some magical powers; just that the kid's mind has been changed to believe he/she...

I'm reading a book, The Spirituality of Imperfection which is a rather interesting and challenging read... Although it is comprised of various parables, the overall book is about how Alcoholics Anonymous uses a system of spirituality to help addicts overcome their struggles, and makes a very valid point that most people seek something greater than themselves to help them in their understandings...
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
@vijay: Are you saying my teddy doesn't have any powers to protect me? :o Now I'm afraid to go to sleep... ;) Good analogy, and my last example was along the same lines. So the question really is, how can people find strength/motivation/self-confidence when there is no-one (or nothing) to turn for help?
- Jemm
from fftogo
Personally, I'm an agnostic. Which, contrary to popular belief does not mean I don't know what I believe. I have beliefs that evolve over time and don't conform to dogma. I don't believe in supernatural explanations ("miracles") but I do acknowledge that our scientific understanding of many phenomena is limited, and in a few cases more or less non-existent. Sometimes "fairy tales" (call...

How about I just just face the night by saying "wow- it got dark." How about I find strength, motivation and the will to go on within myself? (And I don't know any atheists who wish to destroy anyone else's belief sysytem.)
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
m9m, sure anything that works for you. Most people can't do that though which is why people have the need for religion in the first place. ( reg: atheists who want to disprove religion: search for the "There's probably no God" ads. Many more examples exist, when we should actually be focusing on finding an answer, that works for everyone, to the question that Jemm posted in his last comment above. )
- vijay
I agree there should be no "There's no God" ads. There also should be no ads proclaiming that this denomination or that is the only way to save your soul, but you see them everywhere.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Vijay - are you saying that since you think religion is man made it's OK to lie to people if it helps organize and control them?
- Sparky, lurking
you have a better way to avoid chaos Sparky?
- vijay
Vijay - I have a MUCH better way to avoid chaos: truth and science. Science doesn't preclude religion, but unlike religion its provable.
- Sparky, lurking
Also: I fail to see how a lack of religion results in chaos. There are lots of atheists out there, and I don't see them all degenerating into lawlessness.

when my friend discovered her husband cheating on her with another women she fled back to her parent's home. The husband's parents came looking for her as she left the house without permission. What she did was not socially acceptable. She was scared of being outed by the local community and began praying to god for a way out of this; husband dies within a month of a heart attack. She's...

Religion STARTED her problem Vijay - religion is what is saying she as a women couldn't leave the house without permission. In a religion-free society (meaning one where laws are not based in religion) she could just leave her husband and go about her life leaving the cheating scumbag behind.
- Sparky, lurking
the average human and atheists are different Sparky.
- vijay
Vijay, how does she make it through when her prayers aren't answered?
- Todd Hoff
Todd, she was saved when her husband died, from being outed by the community. And now, her faith in god keeps her positive instead of falling in desperation/depression even when her life is hard.
- vijay
do average humans think enough to question the existence of God Sparky?
- vijay
Vijay - she's clinging to god rather than doing something about her situation. She doesn't need to be in desperation - go do something about it. Get a job, find a new husband, move to another country where she won't be limited by being female. People who pray to god to help them rather than trying to help themselves won't get anywhere. Sure lucky miracles happen from time to time, but for my money I'll always take matters into my own hands.
- Sparky, lurking
lol! easier said than done. can you guarantee that the new husband she finds will take good care of her child once he has a child of his own? Moving to another country? She lives in a village! move where? with whom? this is like saying, hey what's so hard about putting a satellite into orbit? fire a rocket and it's there!
- vijay
point is, religion works for a broad spectrum of people; from the suicidal 16 year old emo kid to the aging grandma. science doesn't. But my problem is not that; it's what Jemm put as a question in his last comment. That's the point of this whole thread.
- vijay
I agree with Lindsey. You do your thing and I'll do mine.
- comix aka martha
I'm not forcing religion on anyone. where do you see me do that?
- vijay
yeah I tried the "believe in me" thing and it didn't work. We need a better system.
- vijay
one thing that has held me together during tough times is my belief that "everything that has a beginning has an end; so the tough times will end someday too. " Wondering if there's a better, more consistent way.
- vijay
Vijay - no I cannot guarantee her new husband will take good care of her. Who really needs a new one though - she can leave the village and start a new life. Get herself a job and take care of herself. Religion teaches reliance on others (god in particular), I advocate taking matters into your own hands.
- Sparky, lurking
sometimes matters are out of our control sparky. And she has a job as a nurse. It's easy to say move to a new city, find a new job etc etc But you're missing the point that this is what an average human is and that is why religion came into being in the first place... to deal with trouble and instill hope.
- vijay
again from my comment above --->- " Thomas and Jemm, for lack of better words, here's an analogy: " you know how little children are afraid of the dark right? So they refuse to sleep alone at first. that's the point: illusions work. at the very basic level, you find the strength to cut across troubled times as long as you don't realize it is an illusion.
- vijay
So your whole argument for religion boils down to "people feel better when they don't question anything" Goodbye scientific discovery, goodbye art, goodbye evolution of man - tis better to plod along not questioning anything that to risk upsetting the now.
- Sparky, lurking
nope. I believe that religion is designed to tap into the as yet unknown human potential. And when a believer prays from their heart, irrespective of religion, stuff begins to happen. It seems irrational but if you think about it my body knows to heal itself when my conscious mind doesn't know exactly how. Religion taps into that unknown to make things happen; to change things. It was...

For instance, one thing I have observed so far.. religion encourages syncing between people. What is that you ask? Have you noticed that though God is said to be everywhere followers are thoroughly encouraged to pray in groups (like at temples, mosques or churches)? This happens in all religions. why? I think that is one of the secrets behind why religion works... think of me as a ray...

- vijay
I wasn't kidding at all. "Belief in me" doesn't work. I have tried it. It only works for people with extreme self confidence.
- vijay
there are other mechanisms religion employs to tap into the unknown power of humans I think. Hopefully, someone smarter than me can crack that code.
- vijay
People who don't have 'extreme self confidence' lack such by choice. If you can believe in a god, you can believe in yourself, or anything else for that matter.
- Sparky, lurking
You're generalizing. We're not all militant.
- Kevin Winn
from Nambu
Miracles can happen for atheists when we understand that scientific facts are not the absolute conclusion in itself.. i mean, evolution of science is still in its nascent stage. miracles can happen for atheists by thinking they are capable of much more than what they can, by thinking they are god (in other words, to be rationally irrational in your expectations of yourself).
- Gtp19
I never had faith in the first place, so how could I lose it? I also have never thought it necessary to "disprove" anything. I think people have the right to believe what they like, as long as they don't try to force their beliefs on me.
- Shannon Jiménez
uh Kevin, I'm not generalizing; you're misunderstanding. I have no idea how militancy is relevant to this thread. I'm talking about the dangers of atheists (I'm one too), disproving religion. That's taking away the life support system from billions of people without giving them an equivalent to hang on to. The first comment on this thread clearly talks about this; why do I have to keep repeating this over and over again?
- vijay
Shannon and Slippy, reg: disproving religion, already raised by m9m and was addressed. Please do read the therad before commenting, thanks. I don't want to be repeating the same thing again and again --->- http://bit.ly/IMhjp
- vijay
Gtp19 , there is no way I can think of myself as God because it is irrational and was I one this thread wouldn't be here in the first place. Besides, cut me and I bleed; that hardly gives me the confidence that I can rely upon myself if I end up in an accident on the highway. When I'm in mortal danger, I turn to someone immortal for help.
- vijay
Vijay, there's still a third proposition that reason is integral to faith. I seem to remember that one religion looks at it that while belief in God is difficult, belief in anything else is impossible. But that religion combines reason and faith quite easily. It's only when you seperate reason from faith that there's problems, when one is partisan to reason exclusively, or faith exclusively.
- George Hall (Australia)
Gtp19, and ThatDBD, you guys are misunderstanding the point again. Religion gives ANYONE*** a chance to be a miracle maker and all they need to do is follow a set of standard guidelines very thoroughly. That's why I'm saying we can study it, find out why it works and then give ANY atheist, a better ability to work himself out of tight spots. *** ( not just...

Slippy, I don't have a problem with you posting your personal opinion; you're welcome by all means. But I don't want to see the same point be rehashed again and again, that's all. Also, I'm not confusing anything; if you think I am that just means you have missed the point of this thread.
- vijay
I feel that multiple beliefs can co-exist. Beliefs are not taught, they are *beliefs*. Any explanation to the essence of life that looks apt/suitable/reaonable/logical to an individual, is his/her BELIEF. But once we start comparing and figthing over our beliefs, everything starts to spiral down.....
- Abhishek
This thread reminded me of this quote: "I'm not normally a religious man, but... if you're up there, save me, Superman!" -Homer Simpson
- Jemm
I haven't read any of the comments, but ALL of the atheists that I know aren't interested in "disproving" anything. They simply don't find the concept of God to be useful or relevant in the 21st century.
- iTad
from fftogo
I am not surprised some people can't reconcile faith to reason. Our societies seem to seperate the two concepts, with pundits for reason only and pundits for faith only. Yet, it's still possible to have reason as part of faith and faith as part of reason. It's still the safer middle ground between the other two extremes. And sometimes, God expects one to use one's brains, more so than some religious ministers do.
