Over the years, websites have gotten a much more refined appearance. This is mainly due to the death of Microsoft Frontpage and the end of the <table> tag which used to be holding the whole website content. Nowadays people are using <div> sections customized with a CSS stylesheet. This is much more flexible and allows, in webkit and gecko-based browsers, to get rounded corners. But how to apply rounded corners to images ? For now, this has to be done the old-fashion way, that is with a graphic editor.

I originally bought my samsung NC10 to install Ubuntu Linux. It works well, but the darkness of the screen was really bugging me. So, being a Mac user I decided to install Mac OS X on it. Honestly I have reverted back to Windows XP. There is no battery manager and you will get probably a couple of hours vs 7 or 8 hours with Windows. Other than that Mac OS X was working very well. Here is what I did and what you should know. This tutorial will guide you through the installation of Mac OS X 10.5.6 and 10.5.7

When I started to get interested in the world of web design, I had no idea what it would really mean. I discovered that a website is not just a mere bunch of HTML files but really an artistic accomplishment. Every artist has their own personal touch and which might please or displease the public opinion. Though I clearly would not call myself an artist, I’m starting to develop my personal touch. I believe one of my main sources of influence lies in the work of Phu Ly.

Last month, a new version of Atmail launched. Atmail is a Linux based Webmail Client + Email solution that you can use as an alternative to Gmail or Exchange to bring your organization’s email under control. Therefore Atmail purely is a professional service and there is no personal account option. What’s interesting about Atmail is that the webmail interface has been designed by the gifted folks from Orderedlist.com, that is by professional web designers. One may think this is the case for all webmails, but when you compare Atmail to Hotmail… you may wonder…

Sure, doing webdesign requires to know at least two languages : XHTML and CSS. Yet, if you want to have a very personal template, you should pay attention to small details and most specifically, to your icons (the favicon or the list-style icon of your <LI> elements for example). But then again not all of us have a Photoshop licence. And sometimes you want to edit your website from another computer than your regular one. That’s when web services can become pretty useful. Check out those websites after the break.

A co-worker came to me yesterday and pointed me to a study published by Apollo Surveys. Every month, they analyze web traffic, publishers and companies and rank each of them by category and by country. It turns out two of the websites I work for, Mobinaute.com and Neteco.com, are regularly checked by Apollo. In August, it seems, I was in the top 10 of the most active French Journalists. What’s even weirder is that in August I was absent for a couple weeks of summer vacation.

The last season of Top Gear ended with Jeremy Clarkson complaining that the Aston Martin V12 Vantage could be the last of its breed, thanks to environmental constraints, speed restrictions and global oil-related issues. Now 23-year-old British automotive design graduate James Trim has sketched out plans for a hydrogen-powered Aston Martin dubbed the Volare. Though his two-seater concept currently only exists as a scale model, the car is a compelling vision of what the eco-friendly Aston Martin of tomorrow might look like.

We all come across some seriously bad websites in our day-to-day lives on the Internet. It’s just an unavoidable fact of life, like coming across monsters on the way to the market in video games. When you come across these things, you should approach them with a modicum of fear, for it is something you don’t know, after all. But, more than that, you need to be brave, and you need to relish the experience with full sense of humor employed. Frontpage-made, animated gifs, ugly gradients...These are the 20 worst websites we could find from across the world.

Yahoo! has unveiled a bunch of updates to some of its core services. Mail has gotten a better UI, which I have to say is much more usable now that the personal folders are placed "above" the applications. The client feels lighter. The attachment limit has been upgraded from 10 to 25 Mb with a new upload tool. Yahoo! is also testing out a new version of its search engine with smart dynamic filters from different medias and you can find a video over at YahooVibes.com. Also Messenger has beome social and offer better video quality though I don't know whether Yahoo! has been using new video/audio codecs or not, the press department was not able to answer this question...

Mac OS X 10.6 has been available for pre-order in the USA for several weeks now but Apple now has updated their various websites around the world to enable Mac users to pre-order the new operating system. One would probably prefer to use the term "upgrade" than "brand new system" but hey, Snow Leopard is sold at 29 euros over here in France, compared to the 129 euros i paid for Leopard, that's a pretty good deal. Mac OS X 10.6 includes full Microsoft Exchange support for Mail, Calendar, and Address Book, is ready for 64-bit machines and adds various improvements. Apple promises a much lighter system (minus 7 GB after installation) as well as a new multimedia platform powered by QuickTime X. Snow leopard will ship on August 28 th.

DivX and Yahoo have ended their nearly year long legal dispute. DivX said today that the argy-bargy, which had revolved around a toolbar of all things, is now over and was settled in its favour. DivX didn't provide the amount of the settlement, but we expect it might have caused some pained expressions at Yahoo headquarters. DivX had argued that Yahoo was refusing to honour a two year co-distribution and branding relationship inked in 2007. Under the terms of the deal, Yahoo was supposed to offer its toolbar to DivX downloaders, but apparently Yahoo changed its mind at some point and backed out. In November 2008 DivX decided that enough was enough and took the whole affair to the courts. To its joy the courts decided in its favour.

3 or 4 years ago read the Da Vinci Code. Like many people I did not quite like the screening of the story. Tom Hanks just does not fit. Yet the novel was pretty good. History and fiction together fits very well. Here is the synopsis : Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning Catholicism--is alive and active. Physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope.

Here is some great news for iPhone users who are running the latest iPhone software. Apple and Yahoo! have collaborated to bring you the ability to sync your Yahoo! Calendar with your iPhone Calendar. We’re using an open standard (CalDAV) that has been developed by the CalConnect group, which Yahoo! and Apple are members. Setting up your calendar to sync with your iPhone couldn’t be easier. There is nothing to download, and in just a few simple steps on your iPhone, all of your events will be synced – over the air – without having to plug into your computer. Now, you really can have a mobile calendar.

Mozilla executives today began a concerted campaign to prod European Union (EU) antitrust regulators to demand more from Microsoft than the browser "ballot screen" Windows will offer users later this year. Both Mitchell Baker, the former CEO of Mozilla and the chairwoman of Mozilla Foundation, and Harvey Anderson, Mozilla's chief counsel, posted lengthy blogs, citing concerns with Microsoft's proposal and spelling out changes they want to see. John Lilly, Mozilla's current CEO, confirmed that the messages from Mitchell and Anderson were part of a company-wide plan. "It's part of our effort to get across our point of view," he said in an interview.

Google has added a bookmark sync feature to its Chrome browser. Essentially, this lets users sync their bookmarks between their Chrome browser on different machines. "This new feature makes it easy to keep the same set of bookmarks on all your machines, and stores them alongside your Google Docs for easy web access," says Google's Tim Steele. Google Chrome To use the bookmark sync feature in Chrome, launch Chrome with the --enable-sync command-line flag. After you set up sync from the Tools menu, Chrome will upload and store your bookmarks to your Google account. When a user wants to change or add a bookmark, the changes will be stored in the cloud and synced on all of the machines being used where the bookmark sync feature is activated.

US prosecutors have charged a man with stealing data relating to 130 million credit and debit cards. Officials say it is the biggest case of identity theft in American history. They say Albert Gonzalez, 28, and two un-named Russian co-conspirators hacked into the payment systems of retailers, including the 7-Eleven chain. Prosecutors say they aimed to sell the data on. If convicted, Mr Gonzalez faces up to 20 years in jail for wire fraud and five years for conspiracy. He would also have to pay a fine of $250,000 (£150,000) for each of the two charges.

Microsoft Corp.'s souped-up Internet search engine gained a little more ground on industry leaders Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. in July, according to data released late Monday. Despite the progress, Microsoft's search engine still remains a distant third in the United States - the main reason that the world's largest software maker plans to team up with Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo next year. By working together in online search, Microsoft and Yahoo are betting that they can pose a more serious threat to Google in the most lucrative part of the Internet advertising market.

The European Commission has reportedly launched an investigation into the outbreak of flaming iPhones and iPods which has apparently raged across Europe this summer. According to the EU Observer the Commission's Industry and Enterprise tentacle has requested information from both the company and member countries. The commission is reacting to such reports as that of Britain's Ken Stanborough, whose daughter's iPod allegedly made a hissing noise, before heating up and spewing out vapour. When Stanborough threw the menace out of his back door, he claimed, “there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air”.

Microblogging is one popular type of cake, and Six Apart damn well wants a piece of it too. The company has just added a new element to its TypePad offering: a so-called ‘microblog-style blog’, which I imagine could just as well simply be dubbed a microblog. If you know what Posterous is and does, it’s easy to explain what the new TypePad feature does: exactly the same. If you’re a TypePad user, you can now post by e-mailing in an article or using your iPhone to publish whatever short posts, links, videos and pictures you want to put up on the web easily and rapidly. And you can just as easily push the content back out to other services such as Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed while you’re at it, which is entirely in line with what Posterous has been all about since its inception.

The techies have already dumped Yahoo Mail. It can't afford to lose everyone else. Time to make a product that even Googlers would be envious of. As TechCrunch points out, Google's GMail has now passed AOL for third place among Web mail properties, with Microsoft's Hotmail and Yahoo Mail next. The biggest problem for Yahoo, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber notes, is that while Yahoo Mail still has impressive market share, it has lost all mindshare. There was a point when getting a Yahoo.com email address was cool. Now it bears the prestige and excitement of lunch at McDonald's.

Yahoo is proposing a new paid mail service as a way to sidestep spam. The company is trying out a new service known as CentMail. The site allows users to purchase packs of 500 virtual stamps at a cost of $5, or one cent per stamp. Proceeds from the sales are then given to a participating charity selected by the user, and each of the email stamps carries the logo of the charity. In addition to benefitting charitable groups, Yahoo is also hoping that the program cuts down on spam. By adding the unique stamp to each message, the program is designed to breeze through spam filters. "Anyone you email can automatically verify your donation and confirm you're not a spammer," the company wrote on the CentMail site. "Since spammers send millions of emails every day, it is prohibitively expensive for them to donate even just 1 cent per email."

This means that if you are currently using a version of Yahoo! Messenger that is below 8.0, you will no longer be able to sign in and use it after the retirement date in early September. If you are using a version that is set to retire, you have several options for continuing to use Yahoo! Messenger

Facebook today announced that it has agreed to acquire FriendFeed, the innovative service for sharing online. As part of the agreement, all FriendFeed employees will join Facebook and FriendFeed’s four founders will hold senior roles on Facebook’s engineering and product teams. “Facebook and FriendFeed share a common vision of giving people tools to share and connect with their friends,” said Bret Taylor, a FriendFeed co-founder and, previously, the group product manager who launched Google Maps. “We can’t wait to join the team and bring many of the innovations we’ve developed at FriendFeed to Facebook’s 250 million users around the world.”

Domain Name Wire reported the sale last week on its weekly Sedo sales wrap, but we didn’t know the buyer at the time. OMG.com, which commonly stands for “Oh My God” in shorthand and texting, does not currently resolve to a web site. As readers point out in the comments below, Yahoo has a popular celebrity gossip web site at omg.yahoo.com. Yahoo is not only a domain buyer, but it also sells some of the domain names it doesn’t need. In June it sold the domain name Contests.com for $380,000 at a domain name auction in Washington, D.C. It appears the domain was acquired when Yahoo bought Broadcast.com, which owned the domain name. National A-1 Advertising bought the domain name at the auction.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) said the site also includes social and community features as well as video content. Yahoo!Xtra and Hubsta, an operating subsidiary of The Deal, are planning a shopping channel integrated into Yahoo!Xtra's portal. Citing local and overseas research, Yahoo!Xtra CEO Kevin Bowler says now is a perfect time to introduce a "quality online shopping experience" in New Zealand., Site construction is under way, aiming to have the channel operational in time for Christmas. Yahoo!Xtra is a joint venture between Telecom New Zealand and Yahoo!7. Bowler says the build is being completely executed by Hubsta which is also making the investment to access Yahoo!Xtra's audience.
