Had an accident today, I'm fine, but here are the details that I have in hi-definition slowmotion except for the last second. I got called by grandfather to help set up a printer for his brother-in-law.On my way I lost control of my vehicle on some loose gravel on a curvy one-lane road, rock embankment on oneside, 500-600 foot drop on the other.
I managed to avoid hitting the bank in the first turn, then ended up preparing to go over the edge on the next turn. However, I saved myself yet again, but rear wheels were still sliding out over the edge, so I nailed the gas to keep from slipping backwards. As the rear wheels hit the lip the immediately accelerated me and further exaggerated my over-steer, propelling me into the bank going sideways. Car ended up facing about 150 degrees from the direction I was initially heading, on impact at which point airbags deployed, passenger bag cracked windshield, and rearview detached and gashed my ear.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Thank God, noone was coming around that second turn, most likely we would both be dead, or at least me, the angle of the vehicle means the driver side section would have been crushed.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Yeah, I don't know if I want to deal with any tech call's anymore, lol. Totalled my car and my left arm is a bit sore, in the wrist area, WoW'ing will be decreased as will time on the net in general, I need to live in the real world for a while.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Thanks guys. ( Gus ), the amazing part is I was only going about 25mph when it occured, GRAVEL IS EVIL. ( Anika ), yeah all bruising except for my left arm I'm missing about 6-7 layers of skin over about a 2in x 2in spot right below my wrist, the gash on my ear, and a very peculiar friction burn on my right pec, caused presumably from the seat belt, but left no damage to my shirt.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
James I'm not tired this happened an hour and a half after I got up, and I feel energetic I'm kind of afraid to go to sleep because of the stiffness I'll feel tomorrow.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Here are some images that show the majority of the damage outside of my arm. http://ff.im/7diAZ It's all pretty minor to some of the stuff I've seen in the past.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Wow, that's intense. I would've been petrified. Glad you came out of it with as little injury as you did!
- Jandy
Jandy, I got out and continued up the hill for about 5 minutes before I realized I could call someone. I was dazed. Finally called my mom and she made me go back and make sure noone else hit it.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Sounds like your good driving saved you man. I don't know whether to say you were lucky (to not be badly injured) or unlucky (that it happened) either way I am glad to hear that you are ok.
- Matt G
A buddy of mine got pulled over in his Porsche 911 many years ago doing somewhere around 130mph and was amazingly let off with a warning. A week later he totaled it doing 27mph when he chose the wrong time to try to shift, spun on gravel and off the road he went. gravel=evil.
- Robert DeBord
Holden, WV isn't that scary to drive through, I'm really thankful for my job now though, have plenty of experience driving. What part do you go through?
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
That's terrifying. I'm so glad you're okay.
- joey
Yikes, Jimminy! Very glad to hear you're OK. It's amazing the clarity w/ which you can remember those details in slo-mo, isn't it? Try to take it easy for a couple of days. Give yourself a chance to really recover.
- Ayşe E.
Ayse, I have a very strong visualization and memory ability, seeing someone in real-life I can occasionaly get a very accurate image of what they look like when they were younger, when compared to images, also have been able to enter and memorize lucid states for several years. The slo-mo was very different though.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Thanks everybody. Micah, I am too, changes your perspective a bit. I was really close to losing it.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
I'm so glad you came out of that alive. Sounds incredibly scary and harrowing.
- Spidra Webster
Yikes. Could have been a lot worse, glad it wasn't
- LANjackal
Thinking about it it's kind of like the story of Friendfeed, going along smoothly then it lost control when it was acquired by FB, and it regained a little bit of control but we still don't know if it's going to be able to make it around the next turn. No one has a clue yet.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
I’m inclined to think that using web services as omens for your life is a poor idea, lol
- LANjackal
from IM
It's not an omen, just noticed a similarity, though exaggerated. Also, the last line is great. "We still don't know if it's going to make it around the next turn.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
LOL, Ahsan, I guess I got a raw deal then. No I lost about $7000. Dammit, I screwed up somewhere I guess.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Sheesh, that is pretty steep...
- Ahsan Ali
from IM
Yeah, It goes up to about 1200-1400 at the top of the hill, I was just about half way up. Oh, the price, I totalled my car and have to pay medical bills, out of pocket.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Hope you're not too sore in the morning!
- Anne Bouey
Going 25mph and your car is totaled? Wow! That is some wicked gravel! Good that you're okay!
- Fajar Nurdiansyah
Fajar, I don't know how fast I was going when I hit, I was going 25 when I hit the gravel and had to accelerate to get my rear wheels back on the ground in the second turn, unfortunately I wasn't think as I did this that the car was All wheel drive, as soon as the rear wheels hit the ground, It fired me right into the embankment, so I hit at about 35-40mph, I guess.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
So your doing it rally style? Good thing that can instinctively drive yourself out of the 500 foot drop.
- Fajar Nurdiansyah
Fajar, yeah rally style, with out the jumps, and flipping when I hit the bank, though it was a near perfectly vertical rock where the road was carved in the side of the mountain. I was actually in an Impreza.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Good grief! Sounds like you were very lucky to walk away from that one. Glad you're ok!
- Andrew Terry
This is the closest thing I've found to my accident, everything over the dotted line was the drop off though, and the road wasn't quite that straight, so that turn back he does I was entering the second turn. http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Wow! You've got my respect brother! Make sure you keep the scar, chicks digg scar -- or so they say lol
- Fajar Nurdiansyah
I have plenty of scars, there just in places you can't normally see. Armpit(fish-hook), head(triple-cracked skull), abdomen(hernia), the only one I think may stick with me is the damage to my ear and that won't impress anyone, or maybe the deep friction burns on my chest.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Holly shit! I'm glad you're ok man! That's one hell of an accident!!!

If anything says Julian Assange is dangerous, and an enemy to the US, it's this. Imagine the embarrassment if he revealed as much about other governments - it would be even more embarrassing for them than it would be for the US. Yet, he targets mostly the US government, no one else. That's not journalism, or "free speech" at all. Assange is a coward, plain and simple.
- Jesse Stay
So he's guilty without trial of committing a crime of *prejudice* now because information coming out is seen to be too much about one country and not another? I'm trying to follow the logic... I lost the scent on the trail somewhere.
- Micah
from FFHound(roid)!
Micah, no, he's guilty of threatening to release information that would be extremely harmful to the US military and intelligence effort. The prejudice is just observation on my part.
- Jesse Stay
Why doesn't he just release the info if it's about free speech?
- <3Heather<3
Because he is maximizing the hurt it brings. That's what people's issues are. It's not that he is leaking, it's he is using the info to run an agenda.
- Johnny
And because of that I'm less sympathetic to his 'cause'. I'm all for his rights and fair justice but you can't fiddle with powerful people and expect no blow-back.
- Johnny
So newspapers like the NYT releases secret government documents not hinting to it beforehand and they aren't an enemy of the state, but Wikileaks is?
- Micah
from Android
Bob Woodward publishes a book quoting people with access to secret information and not authorized to release it, and that's not a problem, but when an Australian publishes, that's wrong. Really?
- Micah
from Android
Enemy Of The State is purely a media beat up. I'm fairly certain many people don't think of him as a war criminal but are interested in how he got a hold of a quarter of a million classified documents. Also, some people question the wisdom of releasing certain documents where diplomatic situations are fragile like in the case of the Zimbabwe opposition leader. A paper like the NYT would...

Woodward can get away with it because of who he is. If anyone laid so much as a hand on Woodward, there would be a far greater public outcry, not to mention woodwards well placed friends there to offer help. Assange is a relative nobody in comparison
- Roberto Bonini
Johnny, WL worked with major newspapers in Germany, France and elsewhere to redact the less than 2000 cables actually released. I'm not sure how that amounts to indiscriminately dumping.
- Micah
from YouFeed
Roberto, that's about right. His privileged position insulates him from being harassed.
- Micah
from YouFeed
Woodward also wasn't making threats that were he to die even more classified and damaging (literally) documents would be released. Woodward was also sharing information being leaked about illegal activities in the government. Assange is threatening to leak information about non-illegal activites, which will seriously mess up many major intelligence efforts by the US Government. So, Assange is trying to hurt the US Government, while Woodward was just trying to fix it.
- Jesse Stay
That's the difference behind Free-speech and Terrorism, IMO
- Jesse Stay
Woodward was also a US Citizen, with US interests in mind. Assange is not, and has no desire to see the US succeed.
- Jesse Stay
This whole Assange thing is underdogism at its worst. As I've written before, too many people don't care what's being leaked as long as SOMETHING is being leaked (and that it's hurting the U.S.). Everyone cheers for David; no one cheers for Goliath. Heck, most people haven't even read Wikileaks. They just like the fact that it's happening.
- Akiva
Woodward is an American citizen and a journalist who developed a story, followed leads and put together a comprehensive picture of a conspiracy (Watergate). His subsequent work has followed a similar pattern. Assange has done none of those things. He has selectively leaked embarrassing information in a bid to undermine US standing in the world. The two could not be more different.
- The original Kevin
Most people haven't directly read Woodward either.
- Micah
Micah, that doesn't make what Assange's doing acceptable, though. And although I can't prove it, I can Scobleize that there are more people who have read Woodward's books than people who have read Wikileaks.
- Akiva
Akiva, my point about the (non) reading is that a relatively few read original source material then churn out an interpretation that fits a narrative to which they predisposed. Whether it's leaked documents or wide-open gov't documentation not shrouded by secrecy, most people form an understanding based on the echo chamber their channel is already tuned to.
- Micah
The States, before it was United, was an underdog once.
- Micah
Of course and underdogists love that America because they were the David against Britain's Goliath. Now the tables have turned and America's the Goliath and Assange (or Islam or whatever else) is the David. Their refusal to get actually educated on a subject, to actually read and think for themselves, is inexcusable. To automatically cheer on the underdog regardless of qualification is as moronic as not reading up on a topic before preening yourself as someone who can make an informed opinion.
- Akiva
Agreed. I don't like a lot of aspects of the libertarian movement, for instance, but I also can't through it out whole sale just because there are stupid/spiteful counting themselves in the fold. In either case, the underdog cheerleading for its own sake is unfortunate phenomenon when mentally processing the real principles/ideas is work enough.
- Micah
I just get frustrated by this kind of crap regardless of whether it's libertarians, Republicans, Democrats, whatever. It's the worst promotion of ignorance. It's interesting to watch them turn, though. Apple, at one time, was the underdog but now because of the iPhone and iPad, they've risen to the top and now everyone's crapping on them and cheering on the underdog Android. Google's...

Trying to hurt the US Government isn't such a bad thing, it might give the powers that be some more reason to think before they act in future.
- Matt G
Micah, the States were also a part of (citizens) of Great Britain before they were underdogs. Assange isn't even a citizen - he's an outside source trying to battle the American government. It's terrorism, not free speech or revolution, and the entire purpose is to hurt the US, no one else. As a US citizen, I take offense to that.
- Jesse Stay
"Arab leaders with CIA ties" -- which "Arab leaders" would not be on that list?
- Brian Sullivan
Excellent point there Brian. I might seem to be shocking for some, but most people wouldn't bat an eyelid.
- Roberto Bonini
The funniest part here is that the pro-Assange people talk about this as if it were nothing. Like deciding whether to supersize your order or not. You might as well be discussing the best way to go about performing a home brain surgery on your friend. We simply don't know enough about the ramifications here.
- Akiva
Whatever the ramifications, I predict that the governments involved will all make public statements that they knew all along, just like they did with the diplomatic cable releases.
- Victor Ganata
>>So newspapers like the NYT releases secret government documents not hinting to it beforehand and they aren't an enemy of the state, but Wikileaks is? - Micah<< Bingo! The thing is that behind the veneer of the Middle East, some of these governments are more friendly with the US and Israel than they would like their citizens and friends to know. This is what the currently system is built on. Israel's Mossad trained Saudi intelligence. Israeli Pilots flew for Iran during the Iran/Iraq war. So with secrets like these, it could destabilise the entire middle east because that whole region has built it identity on hating the US and Israel.
- Roberto Bonini
Sovereign states are just an extension of a unit long valued for the one thing besides love (which some think can be compartmentalized apart from it) and that is loyalty. Family and sovereign state alike cannot exist without it. But something is at work here and you see it with the very entity that government (or sovereign states) have served as the watchdog of and that is commerce....

" it could destabilise the entire middle east " -- isn't it already destabilized? Maybe it would have exactly the opposite effect -- help stabilize the region?
- Brian Sullivan
If you wanted people to long for peace at whatever price, then it is in your interest to destabilize as many areas as you can....and then you can set your price for that peace.
- Melanie Reed
There's no reason that the stability that the U.S. wants to impose is the only form of stability that is worth achieving. Should the people in these regions not be allowed to make informed decisions? I'm not a big fan of paternalism completely overriding autonomy.
- Victor Ganata
Good conversation. I think that I side with Jesse and Kevin here.
- Chieze Okoye
Victor, I'm not advocating this action by any one or number of countries. I am simply stating an observation that is in plain sight. And it is bigger than any one country. It only looks like it is about them. It is bigger than that.
- Melanie Reed
The problem I have is with the implicit assumption that the U.S. is always a benign force, and we should just trust our leaders, because clearly they know what they're doing. This is exactly the sort of blindness that led us to invading Iraq for completely fabricated reasons, which is arguably one of the most destabilizing things that could've happened to that region. Assange may have his own agenda, but the fact of the matter is that that information got leaked. If not him, then someone else would have it
- Victor Ganata
Victor, then why are we relying on someone who doesn't have the US's own interests in mind to reveal that info? Assange is an enemy to the US, plain and simple. He could care less if the US is harmed or not - he has his own interests at hand. He doesn't care about any of us. If there are illegal things happening in our government then it is up to the American media to reveal that, which...

- Victor Ganata
I don't think that the US is implicitly benign. And I don't think that anyone else is asserting (or even implying) that. I think that checking it when it does wrong is very important. But I don't think that Assange is doing that. I think Assange is hurting the US for the sake of hurting the US. Or he's hurting secrecy for the sake of hurting secrecy. Both of which, I personally think,...

I agree, the diplomatic cable leak seemed rather pointless. But only because it seems that everyone already knew this stuff. There wasn't anything there that was absolutely shocking. Sure, there's all sorts of spin going on, but it's not like countries are breaking off diplomatic ties. No new wars have started. This contrasts starkly to the activity of our own press in the early 2000s.
- Victor Ganata
"Assange is an enemy to the US, plain and simple." -- that strikes me as a totally naive statement. Unfortunately it is neither plain nor simple.
- Brian Sullivan
Victor, then go to your congressman. The US has ways of changing that other countries Assange is not targeting don't. If you're not getting through, then I'm afraid you're in the minority, my friend, welcome to America. Move to another country if you don't like us.
- Jesse Stay
Heh, the irony is that the information Assange holds will probably prove that many so-called plain and simple enemies of the U.S. aren't so plain and simple.
- Victor Ganata
Brian it is very plain and very simple - he wants nothing but harm to the US. If he were a US citizen I'd probably think a little differently, but he has no US interests at heart. He's not a Patriot, by any means, unless it's for another country.
- Jesse Stay
The fact that Assange is *not* targeting other countries shows this is plain and simple.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, nice. Love it or leave it, huh? This is my damn country, too. I'm not going anywhere. And I have exercised my rights as a citizen at the voting booth, and have in fact written my representatives. But change is slow, and it doesn't excuse the atrocities of the past.
- Victor Ganata
Victor, so you're going to rely on a non-US citizen to relay your interests to the US government? That makes no sense.
- Jesse Stay
Anyway, I didn't start this thread to have anyone change my mind. Closing comments now. I find this thread very unpatriotic, and quite depressing, to be frank.

Unlike many Americans unfortunately, I believe in this country, this government, and what it was organized to be. Yes, it has faults, but those faults are the reflection of the populace that votes it in. Checks and balances are there, including Freedom of Press (which is for US Citizens, btw), to keep government in check. The system's not broken. It works, so use it. I won't let any...

So, I then rationalized that saving the "Leo Laporte" Facebook page name from being used by the forces of evil and stupidity was a good thing. If I offered you $1 million on the condition that you could never watch a sunset for the rest of your life, would you take it? If not, how much money would it take? [Disclaimer: this is a hypothetical question, not a contract. I do not have a million dollars.]
I'd like to think that i'd reached a point where life wasn't always and only about "Dead Presidents" so no but I'd guess there's a number that would make me salivate but not so far. Now if you had a magic wand that could offer me health....
- WarLord
Very wise, WarLord, health is surely more valuable than cash.
- Lo the Baker
I got to thinking about this recently while watching a sunset. I suspect my answer will be the minority viewpoint :P I have to say, though, Matt your answer surprised me.
- Lo the Baker
I'm inclined to say no. It's tempting, but I'm not sure money could make me as happy as the beauty of nature can. Plus, sunsets are my favourite thing to photograph.
- Penguin
I thought about this for a long time. If sunrises were allowed, I'd take money -- but the amount would have to be in the billions. If I weren't allowed to see either, there is literally no amount of money/property I would accept. I'm really glad this question came up, because now sunsets seem a lot more valuable... they were always enjoyable, but I didn't assign them any inherent worth. Fortunately I still get to see them, as I'm pretty sure no one's about to give me $10 billion :P
- Lo the Baker
Tough call. Sunsets are nice, but a million dollars could do a lot. I think it would depend on what kind of mood I'm in at the time of the offer. $5 million would probably win out no matter what.
- Brad Greer
That's funny, Red, because I always think that $1M wouldn't go very far, especially if you kept it in the US. This despite never having more than a few thousand myself :P

- Lo the Baker
Have you ever just sat and felt in awe & grateful, like you were privileged to have the experience to be alive & witness the world around you? I just really can't imagine a million dollars giving me that feeling, but I get it for free every day.
- Lo the Baker
Isn't it interesting, Jill, that it's a tough call? I expected a lot of people would take the money, but I'm kinda surprised that it would be such an easy decision for anyone.
- Lo the Baker
An easy decision? I'm about to send a collections agency after you, Lo. :)

I'd need to read the fine print. What would, as Warlord put it, deny me access to sunset. What would happen if I were driving west and got stuck in traffic at the wrong time? Or would I simply be incarcerated to prevent such chances? Would be lose all memory of time while the sun sets each day?

I'm undecided, there are some great features from Gmail that work for Buzz so making it separate would require duplicating these features. So it's easier to keep it inside Gmail. I guess it's just a feeling. I feel it should be separate as it's a separate product but technically it works OK, though has some privacy issues, which we might of got anyway.
- Kol Tregaskes
funny...that is why I'm only using it on the mobile, but I think, yes, it should. I also think that the labels system should be applied to wave, and Buzz be made available in wave (along with email chat sms and voicemail)

"Iconic Australian rockers Men at Work could be facing a hefty legal bill after a court ruled that they plagiarised part of their worldwide 1980s hit Down Under. Larrikin Music accused the band of stealing the song's flute riff from the children's song Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree. Record companies EMI and Sony BMG disputed the claim but today the Federal Court ruled in Larrikin's favour."

A little more accurate to say a meter is: the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1⁄299 792 458 of a second. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Micah
Nope but I'm on Google Apps so I don't expect to have it for awhile.
- Akiva
Still waiting... Tried to jumpstart it with a thread with AJ. No luck yet. I suppose I ( and anyone else) can interact with anyone's public Buzz threads though.
- Nathan Chase
Well.. I guess we can play with pip.io while waiting.
- Jemm
Got it. I only got a Gmail account to test things such as Wave and I don't use Gmail as an actual email client at all so I've got pretty much no contacts through the account making my experience of Buzz so far really quite limited. Still, added a load of people who it suggested I should and whose avatars looked familiar in FF so I'll let it build up and see if it's any good.

my Gmail account suddenly vanished without warning about a year ago
- Joe The Sausage
I don't see it yet either. I am not a regular Gmail user, so I'm guessing they may have enabled it for the most frequent users first.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff: it's not for the most frequent users since I've got it and I've never sent an email from Gmail in my life (and have only ever received 5 messages apparently); I only registered an account so someone could send me a Wave invite a few months back.
- Mark H
ARGH! It's killing my buzz around... but I'm patient, and I'm at the office so it's not too bad atm. Don't feel my early adopter DNA yet.
- Zu from AOD
NOPE. Don't they know I'm FriendFeed-famous? I can make or break this thing! What do you mean, I can't? Fine, whatever. *slinks away*
- Jandy
Well, if Jandy doesn't have it yet, then I certainly can't hope to have it. I'll try it, but I played with Wave here and there and haven't been back in months. I suspect that if Zuckerberg pulled the plug on FriendFeed, I'd look at these other services a little more seriously.
- John E. Bredehoft
No. I only was able to look at and comment on someone else's. I have a BlackBerry, so I can't use mobile to get in.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Tried the mobile version, which starts to load, but then it just spins and it doesn't actually load any content.
- Jandy
Not on desktop, but I loaded an Android 2.1 Rom on the ol' G1 and now I've got it both in mobile webap and in Google maps as a layer. I have to say the map functionality is simply awesome... especially if this takes off.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
funny enough.. I now have it on my google profile page...but not in gmail, so I got it, just can't use it lol.. check your google profile Morton.
- Rob Sellen :o)
I still have no internet because of snowstorms, but I will be Buzzin' with the same ID - jcunwired - once life returns to normal. Will accept both Valentines and invites from all FFers.
- JCunwired
from iPhone
From the sounds of it, I'll still with what I have. No buzz for me.

"Australian internet rights groups fear a piracy court case could force internet service providers (ISPs) to become "copyright cops" and cut web access to customers who illegally download. The Federal Court is on Thursday expected to hand down its judgement in the case, which has pitted Hollywood and Australian film and TV producers against Australia's third-largest internet provider, iiNet."

Yes yes yes, Mass Effect 2! *drool* Though right now I'm having a blast from the past and playing Dragonquest: Hand of the Heavenly Bride on DS. I'm sorta giving up on Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. :/ And as much as I loved Bioshock, I really want them to revisit System Shock.

ive been playing MAG on and off for a couple of weeks now. Kol i included you in a wave about it, in case you didnt see it. For those interested in playing it, it is available now in beta thru the PS3 store. it its fully functional too. Its fun, but I prefer MW2 while I hold out for BFBC2 which will be the game to play in this genre.

I've ordered Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and 2100 Xbox Points to be Alien Breed Episode 1. I'll grab MAG on rental from Lovefilm and Colin McRae: Dirt 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 are still too dear. :-(
