Re: Social Index: The Hottest Beers in Louisville - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"You and I don't have to like the numbers that I'm displaying and we are free to interpret their meaning as we please. I personally think that your interpretation of how social media works is wrong, but that's what makes America great, Dusty. At this point in time, Red Yeti and Great Flood are the hottest beers/brewpubs in Louisville via Facebook data. The fact that they're the hottest, from data gathered yesterday, could be for a lot of reasons that I will never pretend to know or fully understand based on a basic gathering and plotting of numbers. The purpose of these posts is show you what is happening so you can decide for yourself. You are free to like it or dislike it, love it or hate it, agree with it or disagree with it as you please. Thanks for playing. :) -chris" - Chris Hall

Re: Social Index: 11,000 people know where to find the Best Sushi in Louisville - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"Thanks Stephen. I obviously disagree but really enjoy the discussion. It seems that the word "best" drives a negative reaction when talking about data from social networks. That's part of why I like to use it. We don't recommend the most popular restaurants to our friends and families, we recommend the "best" restaurants and all feel that we're qualified to make that determination. Myself included. The fact that we can track these aggregate recommendations today, within social networks, and tabulate them to help us discover new places is fascinating to me. I personally put a higher value on the wisdom of crowds in this regard than I do the lone critic's list. We're talking about thousands of palettes and experiences vs. one palette and experience to determine what's good. That's really valuable in my book. Miley Cyrus is an interesting analogy because she is nominated for and wins awards with words like "best" in them based primarily on her popularity. Whether that's good or bad is..." - Chris Hall

Re: Social Index: The Ultimate Louisville’s Best Burger Breakdown - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"Thanks for the comment, Paul. The difference between best and popular is clear to me, as it is to you. However, I've always thought the word "best" to be strongly subjective based on individual taste. A lot of people consider their moms to be the "best mom," for example, but there can be only one true "best mom," to your point. These social index posts are exploring a utilitarian definition of the word best within a localized geography, because I'm fascinated by the wisdom of crowds captured in the form of social network exhaust data. I think it can be useful. These posts are an exploration. Also, declaring something to be the best seems to evoke a strong reaction from an audience, which leads to increased engagement around the topic. That is something I'm also interested in instigating to help speed up the process of determining the value of these posts." - Chris Hall

"I like your style, Rich. :) If it has to do with Facebook, then it's safe to say that it is more about brand recognition as a general rule." - Chris Hall

Re: Social Index: Louisville’s Favorite Kentucky Bourbon - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"Hi Amy. Thanks for your question. The first graph is total fan page Likes for each brand, and 7 out of the top 10 brands have the city of Louisville listed on Facebook as the city where their highest concentration of fans live. So because Maker's Mark has the most fans and the highest percentage of Maker's Mark's Facebook fans live in Louisville, I'm calling it Louisville's favorite bourbon." - Chris Hall

Re: IL Social Index: Can Facebook predict the Metro Council District 9 winner? - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"Hi Grassroots Girl and thanks for your passionate response. You make a great point that I am not able to tell if any candidates' Facebook Fans actually reside in their district. I personally live on the sunny side of Louisville and have no way of voting for any of the candidates in this race, so if I liked a particular candidate's page it would be meaningless to Facebook's predictive power of who will win. That is a definite limitation of the data, which I alluded to, albeit poorly, in a note in the post. I do want to make it clear that this post is in no way an endorsement of any candidate, but rather an exploration of social network data predicting the results of a local election. Politico has done a lot of work on this topic on a national level and I am personally interested in the idea of being able to use Facebook as a public scoreboard leading up to local elections. If Facebook can be as good as expensive polls, then I would argue that this becomes a very interesting topic of..." - Chris Hall

Re: IL Social Index: Trinity rocks Louisville private schools on Facebook - http://insiderlouisville.com/busines...
"That's what I'm exploring, Billy. :) So far, I think that Likes and People Talking About This are interesting to look at together, if for no other reason than to identify which organizations believe that Facebook is important to spend time and money on, relative to their peers. We can see how people engage with organizations on Facebook and that engagement is important to organizations, despite Facebook's desire to monetize reaching a collected audience." - Chris Hall

"Thanks Angela. You make an interesting point, for sure. I'm hesitant to arbitrarily segment the number of fans by location right now, but like the idea of being able to better understand fan/follower density by business location a lot. :)" - Chris Hall

Re: IL Social Index: A look at how Louisville digital media stacks up on social networks - http://insiderlouisville.com/news...
"You bet, Martin and thank you for the feedback. I appreciate your point of view. I've come to grips with the fact that I'm going to miss organizations, because I can add and subtract them over time. I can do a better job explaining that week over week growth is an indicator of either time or money being spent on social and will work to improve that explanation. Unfortunately, I don't have an interest in tracking down the individual in charge of social within every organization of every index, due to the time it will take each week, and the likelihood of not being told an answer. More to come. :)" - Chris Hall

"As an outsider, there is no way for me to know if any of these companies are conducting paid media campaigns, Martin. But that's what makes my dispassionate analysis pretty valuable. We can very easily see which social networks are important to a local organization, and a local industry, based on the social network chart toward the bottom of the post. Week over week gains then help us all begin to understand which organizations are focusing time and/or money on growth in social, relative to each other." - Chris Hall
