I need a heavy duty backpack for my vacation in August. I'm thinking something along the lines of a North Face Recon...Any other suggestions?

I have a North Face Recon. It's good, but depending on what you mean by "heavy duty", it's still not the best if you're planning on carrying really heavy stuff in it. It's good for a day or overnight bag, but I would recommend something w/ more structural strength/back support if you're intending to use it for camping or serious hiking. Also, if you're in the Bay Area, the North Face outlet in Berkeley is great for bags that may be discontinued and much much cheaper than at REI.

North Face Surge is great if you're looking for something tech friendly - nicely padded pocket for laptop, lots of places to put cords and stuff. It's really heavy duty.
