Les - yes a side bar would be great. Shouldn't be too hard, but I haven't done an add-in before. Would solve some of the frame issues - via StumbleRead

Thanks Adam! How about collapsing the comments down to show the first and last couple, with a more link, like friendfeed does?

Another thought, is there any way to filter out posts that you have already looked at, unless there was a comment added?
- John Duff
John - yes collapsible comments sound great. Any preference on whether the comments are in chronological or reverse chronological order? So far I've got one strong vote for reverse :).

With regard to dropping read posts... I think I could make this work. I don't think it would be too disruptive because the posts get scrambled every 180s (to preserve the "most recently touched" order that FF puts them in). I feel an options page coming on...!
- Adam Loving
adam: nice job. small UI thing: is there a way to insert a line break after "{ } posted an item on { }"? as is, this line runs right into the title of the linked item, and causes a momentary bump as you're reading along. thanks!
- Bill Barol
Hi Bill - excellent point. I didn't want to add a full line break there in order to condense everything as much as possible. However, today I added a colon to give it a little more separation. hope that works for you.
- Adam Loving
I'm pretty new to all this FF stuff but, to my newbie eyes, this is a great bit of kit Adam! Also love the way you're responding so swiftly to users' comments :)
- Bob Kingsley
FYI, links to NY Times articles seem to close the left-hand StumbleRead panel.
- Robert Gable
I wasn't able to find away around pages with "frame buster" javascript (like the NYT). However, I've introduced a new "pop-out" mode which doesn't suffer from this problem.

Looking forward to diving into the Duncan tabs and now these new ones by Rahsheen, the FF experience just keeps getting better!
- michael sean wright
Louis - I check them once in a while to see how many downloads. Bugs me a lot that more people don't use them. Really makes things easy for me and now have them on all the boxes.
- Charlie Anzman
Shouldn't all these tabs go into a FriendFeed tabs extension ?
- Michael C. Harris
Oh, and I get Google search instead of Google Calendar.
- Michael C. Harris
I have been researching the best way to put them all together, but I'm picky. I want an options interface to check/uncheck what you want. Not sure what's up with the search coming up, it happened for me once, but I can't reproduce. Are you logged in?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I agree option are important. As for the calendar, yes, I'm logged in, and the calendar displays properly in a normal tab.
- Michael C. Harris
Thanks for pointing this out, Michael. I made an error in the url (google.com/Calendar instead of /calendar). I just fixed the script so you can download it again. That's what I get for making extensive use of find/replace :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I must agree with Jasmin. Is this really the right ad for this demographic?
- AJ Kohn
It's not like you can set out on a 2 year journey to 'discover' that Vista doesn't actually suck. And Columbus died still thinking the earth was flat, so how does that figure in to the metaphor?
- Kevin Fox
AJ, great idea on the Fail Whale theme. I added a second targeted ad around the concept of Microsoft looking for Twitter's lost fail whale. http://thomashawk.com/2008...
- Thomas Hawk
I think this is smart. They can't directly go up against Apple on "coolness", and they're not. This is more of an end run. In a way, it's similar to the Think Different (sic) campaign: popular wisdom says that Vista is bad, but those who are dispensing the popular widsom, though well dressed, are uninformed.
- Jon Galloway
i guess i'm super old school... in my early days of modem surfing (circa late 80s), this ad would essentially have windows saying: it is cool to illegally copy us!
- Rob Reed
I've already been through this with some other people the FriendFeed thread mentioned by Alan Le above. I'm not going through it again but I will say that I think it's a great ad campaign and I wish Microsoft the best of luck with it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
the campaign appears real; the crap on the bottom seems to have been added by somebody in photoshop. I like this quote from the zdnet article: "Vista is now actually better than its reputation. That’s a marketing issue"
- Paul Whitaker
Alright so this is the real ad: http://www.tothepc.com/pic... -- They're trying to say "Everyone thought the world was flat" saying "Everything thinks Windows is the same, but get the real facts about Vista, etc, etc," or something like that. Who knows, it's not very straight forward.
- Aaron Myers
are you sure that they are not just trying to say everyone should just be pirates because pirates are cool? ;)
- Thomas Hawk
Who messes with Pirates? Nobody, that's who.
- Kristopher Tate
I'm laughing because reading it out loud or in your head sounds stupid.
- Outsanity
Searching my registry for Spanish dubloons.
- Akiva Moskovitz
But if everyone is a pirate, then it wouldn't be cool anymore, because everyone is doing it. Thankfully, not everybody is a pirate, though, so it's still cool to be one. Argh!
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
I think the ad says everyone should drink Cutty Sark. Odd tack: if you don't love our product you're a blighted medieval-minded slug.
- Michael Markman
Did FF just delete likes and comments from this thread??? I swore I saw 2 likes and a comment a second ago...If you left a like or comment, can you confirm?
- Justin Korn
I don't know Justin, but I added a like.
- Mike Fruchter
justin, it may have been a flickr refresh thing... it seems to happen a lot.
- edythe
I think sometimes when you are uploading shots to Flickr FF jumps the gun a bit and posts your thumbnail here. Then you upload a few more and it rejiggers the upload to add more of your photos. It think when that is done though likes and comments are removed from the original FF post that is replaced by the more updated Flickr post... I think. I could be wrong.
- Thomas Hawk
My comment is gone, although it shows up under my ME tab?
- Victor Ryden
Just rechecked and it's gone from there now also. weird.
- Victor Ryden
I've seen similar behavior to what Thomas mentioned above. The other day I uploaded a few photos, took a short break (10 minutes maybe), then uploaded a few more. There was a like that disappeared when the rest of the photos showed up, all in the same post.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Thanks for the suggested probabilities. That all makes sense, but shouldn't FF treat it as one post?
- Justin Korn
Thomas & Justin: FriendFeed leaves the comments/likes on the variant posts. For 2 missing likes & 1 comment, see (1) http://friendfeed.com/e... for "Anna Haro and anna liked this" and "Don't feed the Communist Disney character? - Victor Ryden"
- Mitchell Tsai
FriendFeed will continue adding new pictures to Flickr inputs (a) 6 of the top row of 7 will stay the same. (b) The left picture of the top row will continue to change (c) After 25 photos have been reached, no more will be added, but the left picture will be a new onw (d) ~1 hour after the last update, FriendFeed will put pictures into a new Flickr post (E) Weird: On some occasions FriendFeed won't pick up Flickr stuff for 1-7 days....
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: How in the world did you find that link? I don't even see it in the "me" tab! Thanks for sharing, but still weird IMO.
- Justin Korn
Advanced searching: Do a search for the word "Flickr" (e.g. "search?q=Flickr&who=justinkorn") in your own FriendFeed page and you will see the tons of variant permalinks FF makes as each Flickr picture comes into FriendFeed. FF suppresses these duplicates in your "me" page, otherwise you might see 1-25 entries for your Flickr sets. I've complained about the disappearing comments/likes before. Maybe it's time to put this in feedback again.
- Mitchell Tsai
I think one reason FF keeps the old links is not to break the items that Anna Haro and anna saved http://friendfeed.com/e..., but I think a better approach would be to merge all the comments/likes, and adjust everyone's saved set to the one with the most comments/likes. (Bonus: How about letting us choose the order of the 25 pics?)
- Mitchell Tsai

This seems to be fairly big for people that live by Hotmail and Messenger, though.

I live by Hotmail and Messenger. Windows Live for Windows Mobile is special as it completely syncs my Hotmail mailbox to my Windows Mobile phone. Same unread/read email messages on the web or my desktop PC appear on my phone and vice versa. Compared to POP3 and IMAP - this syncs my email with Hotmail and my other PCs a heck of a lot better.

it's not about 'parents', it's about awareness of technology. fundamentally twitter, friendfeed, etc are still extremely edge tech
- Jeremy Toeman
I've had a lot of non-techie people come up to me lately and ask me about Twitter, including my parents. Not sure it's getting to the tipping point yet, but there sure is a lot more mainstream awareness of Twitter out there thanks to articles like this one.

You'd think USAToday.com would give twitter a direct link with http://twitter.com also how about linking to http://Zappos.com. They do have links to their own 'blogs' on twitter, but please... Yeah, but I wanted to talk about it with *my* friends. Is it a social faux-pas to try and enforce comment consolidation of someone else's entry?
- Kevin Fox
I just noticed how useful it was for Scoble to post that crosslink here -- I wish Friendfeed would find and display these crosslinks automatically. One often misses interesting discussions for lack of crosslinks.
- Sean McBride
Kevin: I don't know. I figured your friends might like to know about an interesting conversation going on with my friends. :-) I wish FriendFeed would show where other places a conversation is being discussed.
- Robert Scoble
Whoops - hope I didn't step on Kevin's toes by endorsing the interesting crosslink.
- Sean McBride
Sean: yeah, I guess Kevin wanted to open a private room here for him to discuss this ONLY with his friends. I think FriendFeed needs to have a construct to make that possible. Maybe my taking items like this into a room where only the friends of that person can get into it?
- Robert Scoble
Robert - Kevin raises a valid point when you think about it -- no doubt a software solution is available upon reflection. In any case, I am enjoying the crosslink.
- Sean McBride
So my comment about consolidation was intended mostly to initiate a conversation on the subject. Success! To my mind a lot of the value of FriendFeed is the ability to have conversations scoped by friend connections. I actually saw Michael Markman's twitter first, and decided I liked the story, and would like to share and talk about it with my friends, rather than the strangers who were...

Kevin: get over it. I'm going to keep joining these things because I want MY friends to see all conversations on a topic. :-) Of course, if you take it into a room, then I'll probably leave them there. I don't get why you didn't just "Like" the original item, which would have shown your friends the item and gotten them involved in the conversation. What, you don't want your friends to hang out with my friends? I don't get the value of having just your friends see something...
- Robert Scoble
Kevin: my thought: Friendfeed should be infinitely flexible. Users should be able to organize conversations every which way, with any level of inclusivity or exclusivity. You've got a valid point and raised an important issue about social protocols here.
- Sean McBride
By the way, I'd love to debate this face-to-face on video. I bet it would get something very interesting going. It also explains some of the design behind FriendFeed and why many people I show it to say "it's too noisy."
- Robert Scoble

Scoble is operating in the Walt Whitmanesque universal embrace of the cosmos. :)
- Sean McBride
Marco: no. But it would be interesting to know your thoughts.
- Robert Scoble
"I wouldn't want someone siphoning off my conversation " , Kevin I agree. There are topic and threads which are 'yours' , regardless of whereelse the conversation maybe happening. I would not want (a) somebody to inject themselves into my thread and hijak the conversation (b) to redirect my friend to another thread. We kinda forget our common good sense manners when we get into convos on FF. Both items(a and b) , would be considered rude inturruptions in RL life . Just my way of thinking and I maybe wrong !
- Peter Dawson
I admit, I liked this thread for the FF comments, not the article.
- Hao Chen
Robert: It didn't sound like your purpose in commenting was to make sure your followers saw this conversation, but to consolidate the conversation into a single thread. Please don't twist this into a 'what, my friends aren't good enough for you?' I believe that conversational diaspora is a good thing, and that artificial comment consolidation is not. If I had something to say in the...

Actually, the only thing that frustrates me in this thread is that by the time I finish writing a comment, 5 other people have written new comments, making it look like my comment was written with the awareness of those comments. Ugh! Definitely a user experience issue. :-P
- Kevin Fox
You know, I'm sure Michael Markman didn't appreciate the siphoning off of comments from his thread when Kevin Fox, authoritative Friendfeed person tons of people are following, reposted the same link. Or maybe it's good to just not worry about where conversations are going? Isn't that the value of Friendfeed? Who cares who's siphoning from whom? Who cares where links are re-shared? Oh,...
- Mark Trapp
Kevin: I wanted to do both. Your friends should know about an interesting conversation happening about that topic somewhere else, and should be able to discuss it amongst themselves too, here. Personally, you should have loaded a comment that made it clear what your intent was. If I want to talk about something with just my friends, I would have loaded a comment with a link to the original, but with a comment saying "I want to talk about it just with my friends, to see what you think."
- Robert Scoble
Re a F2F conversation on video: that would be cool. I've been meaning to write a blog post on 'who owns the conversation'. I've got some concrete ideas on the subject, especially how it pertains to conversations about blog posts that happen off-blog, but I also don't feel any one person has the right to speak for others in a 'this is how things should be' kind of way. Definitely one of those social issues that is still contested because it's so new.
- Kevin Fox
There should be an easier way to view all the conversations on a particular piece of content. FF should connect all the threads in the background through some unique identifier for the content (like the URL that this link points to), then let people decide whether they want to view just their friends' comments or those from extended community (including imported Disqus / Intense Debate comments for the same URL).

I'm not quite sure what is "historic" about a septuagenarian visiting the internet. Are we meant to be impressed? My mother is 72 and does quite a number of tasks online, as do many people of her age and considerably older.

Apparently Kevin because Robert stumbled on your thread, he was already your friend or perhaps in some other way in your Friendfeed vicinity -- and you say you wanted to discuss this with friends -- so from his point of view your entry may have looked like a dupe. And dupes among segments of friends are indeed a problem on Friendfeed. Nobody minds the dupes we don't notice, but we may mind having the conversation on the same thing split up among segments of our friends.
- Philipp Lenssen
@Kevin - allow sub-comments which are comments to comments to make it easier to allow people to talk the person who's talking. Why is this thread being highjacked to discuss FF features?! I thought it was about McCain visitng the "Internet" :)
- Shivanand Velmurugan
This thread keeps growing and still going nowhere. It is really simple: if you want to discuss things only with your friends, make a private room just for you and your friends, and post "friends only" stuff there. No one else needs to find you've created a separate thread of "their" topic somewhere else.
- Dread Pirate PJ
I have a very simple model of ff, which is perhaps a lot like Kevin's. I come here to discuss things with my ff friends. Many of them are people I don't know at all in rl, but it's important to me that these conversations are mostly with the same 100-200 people, over and over again. As a result, rooms are not very useful to me, since when I comment on something in a room, it is not automatically placed in the feed of all my friends. Rooms are at least useful for finding content and resharing it.....
- j1m
The feeds of people with very many friends, like Robert, are not very useful either. With so many people commonly commenting on his thread, I mostly don't remember who any one person is from one encounter to another, and for me that makes conversation a lot less fun. So Robert's feed, also, is mostly useful for resharing.
- j1m
I do really wish that ff would organize feed items that share a url, by presenting them all (that is, all the ones I can see) right next to one another, or joining them into a single nested feed item, that has the different conversations hanging off of it.
- j1m
so far its only Vista and XP, but mobile devices will be added in the future. Starting with the Windows Mobile platform first. I bet if you hack away at it now you can get it to work. If i can hit my corporate servers from my current phone (8525), there is no reason why a simple implementation of this would not work now.

I was mildly disappointed it doesn't yet have a MAC version as I am having some problems with Foldershare there and was hoping this would be a good replacement.

Robert - it blows Foldershare out of the water, I wouldn't be surprised to see Foldershare discontinued, actually. Mac should be coming really soon now - I've already seen video of it running on a Mac

While I really like Mesh, I hope Foldershare does not go away. The other day foldershare came in handy when I was at a client site and needed a doc from desktop that was in a folder that was not a part of the mesh. In addition I didn't want to remote in to get it either. Mesh is great and I am imprewssed by it but at least I can run Foldershare on my Macbook Pro and it allows me to take it on calls occaisionally instead of my Windows laptop.
